Ever since the industrial Revolution both major and small companies have put much emphasis on the use of incentives to compensate top management for extra effort and extra skill. For many years industries have also provided hourly rate employees with incentive plans. More recently incentive plans have been extended to include the "front line" supervisors. Many companies have what are called Christmas bonus or profit-sharing plans. The incentives for foremen in mining, which we shall discuss, differ from such bonus plans in that the incentives are paid on a definite measured performance for each individual, and thus directly reflect his effort and skill. What is the objective for paying incentives? The objective for any part of an industrial Engineering Program is to increase productivity and reduce unit cost. The unit cost must include the entire cost of the program. From what base do we start an incentive plan? One should think of art incentive program as the top rung of the Industrial Engineering ladder. Therefore, a company must take several steps before reaching this top rung. The IVAR Project is Norway's largest sewer project presently under construction. One part of it is an 8.1 km (26 575 ft) long, 3.5 m (11 ft 6 in.) diam tunnel, bored in one year. The tunneling project has been running smoothly; however, not everything has been easy. A few of its features are highlighted in this paper: The use of 9 0 (12 cu yd) muck cars on a double track back-up in such a comparatively narrow tunnel. Employing only four men in the tunnel, including the loco driver. A quartzite dyke - 96% quartz with 350 MPa (50 000 psi) and more compressive strength - turned out to be 640 m (2 100 ft) thick instead of the predicted 90 m (300 ft). Passing under a gaseous swamp with only same 5 m (16 ft 5 in.) of rock cover on top.

Reagent control for optimum concentrate yield was studied by laboratory batch flotation tests simulating the Groveland plant flotation circuit in which a rougher concentrate is cleaned twice. The reagents were a fatty acid collector, a sulphonate collector and sulphuric acid. The study included two types of flotation feed representative of the reground and deslimed tailing from the spiral concentration circuit, one when the ore mineral is predominantly specularite and the other when it is magnetite. The factorial design included three levels of fatty acid, five levels of sulphonate and five levels of H2S04, with the two types of ore in nested blocks, making up a total of 75 tests. Similarity of results and reproducibility were established in preliminary tests. The final tests were performed in random order under closely controlled conditions following the established procedure.

This paper discusses the mineralogy and metallurgy of the Kuroko-style volcanogenic massive sulfide ores mined at Formosa Exploration Inc. I s Silver Butte Mine located in southwest Oregon. The principle ore type is pyrite + chalcopyrite + sphalerite, while subsidiary pyrite + bornite + sphalerite ore is also mined. The two styles of mineralization have distinctly different metallurgical behaviors and must be treated separately. Selective flotation methods are used to produce copper and zinc concentrates from the first ore type, while bulk concentrates are produced from the bornite ore. Careful mine planning and coordination between the mine and mill are utilized to achieve optimal recoveries.

Caterpillar said it will produce a Cat line of ac electric drive mining trucks. The world’s largest manufacturer of mining and construction equipment said the addition of an AC electric drive truck line will provide its customers with products to fit key applications. “We are very proud of the strong leadership position that Caterpillar has attained with its mechanical drive trucks, and we will continue to invest in strengthening that position,” said Chris Curfman, president of Caterpillar’s Global Mining Division and Caterpillar Inc. vice president. “We also recognize that there are unique applications that would make the addition of ac electric drive an important and attractive complement to our current truck line.” This is the largest investment Caterpillar has made in mining trucks in its history.

INTRODUCTION Sublevel long-hole stoping is a large tonnage stoping method that may be used when there is a fairly com¬petent straight vein and the walls will stand with little support. It is a method that lends itself to a high degree of mechanization. Two variations of the method are illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 1 illustrates development typical for a 3-m (10-ft) wide vein. Initial development is by a lower haulageway, which may be either track or trackless. A two-compartment raise is driven in the footwall of the vein. At about 12 m (40 ft) above the main head¬ing, a footwall scram is driven and pockets through the vein are cut on 7.6-m (25-ft) centers. Each of the sub¬level blocks selected in this example is 45.7 m (150 ft) long by 12 m (40 ft) high. Stoping starts at the slot raises at stope endlines and retreats to the timbered raise. This retreat sequence starts on the lowest sublevel and the opening cut is blasted into the slot raise. This retreating system is used in order to provide a good safe back over the miners working in any given sublevel. A crawler-mounted down-the-hole or conventional pneumatic drill puts the holes down from one sublevel to the next on any desired drill pattern. Gravity flow brings the broken ore down to the scram level. The illustration shows a large slusher mounted at the timbered raise and slushing from the pockets back to the raise chute. Development of the ore block in Fig. 2 is typical for a 5.5-m (18-ft) wide vein. Initial development is by a trackless heading driven in the footwall of the vein. Pockets are then put into and through the vein on 7.6-m (25-ft) centers. For ease in using trackless rubber tired mucking equipment, these pockets are crosscut to the vein at approximately 1.04 rad (60°) rather than per¬pendicular. A two-compartment timbered raise is driven down from one level to the next. Endline slot raises are again put through from level to level. Each of the sub¬level blocks selected in this example is 40-m (130 ft) long by 33.5 m (110 ft) high. Stoping starts at the slot raises and retreats back to the timbered raise. Long holes are drilled from one sub¬level down to the next by starting between the lowest pair of sublevels and then working up the ore block. Mucking out of the pocket drawpoints is accomplished by rubber-tired load-haul-dump (LHD) units which then dump into a centrally located orepass.

The Wyoming craton in the western United States is a favorable terrane for diamond deposits. The craton hosts a variety of ultramafic, ultrabasic, and ultrapotassic rocks. Additionally, a few hundred 'kimberlitic' heavy mineral anomalies and some geophysical and remote sensing anomalies indicate the presence of undiscovered, mantle-derived, pipes in the craton. The Wyoming craton is separated into a Wyoming 'archon' known as the Wyoming Province, and the Colorado 'proton' known as the Colorado Province. The 'archon' underlies much of Montana and Wyoming and continues north into Alberta and Saskatchewan; the Colorado 'proton' underlies much of Colorado and a small portion of Wyoming. Although most exploration geologists would consider the 'archon' the most favorable terrane for commercial diamond deposits, the 'proton' has produced more than 120,000 diamonds, while the 'archon' has not been very productive.

Asgco’s design of the Arrowhead Ceramic Lagging provides solutions to problems experienced with conveyor belt slippage around the drive pulley and severe wear problems on snub and bend pulleys. Asgco has developed a range of pulley lagging from ceramic, drive rubber and non-drive rubber lagging that is available in abrasion-resistant SBR and MSHA grade rubber for conveyor pulleys from slow belts all the way through to high-speed, high load belts. There is a growing need for a maintenance-free and reliable pulley lagging to ensure conveyor belts run to their highest efficiency.

Significant effort was made in 2003 and 2004 to upgrade the existing instrumentation and process control infrastructure at the Phelps Dodge Bagdad copper concentrator. Specifically, • cameras were installed on the feed belt for online image analysis data, • ultrasonic level sensors were installed for froth height and sump level control, • a trial froth image system was installed on one of the rougher rows, and • a new expert system to tie everything together was integrated and tuned in-house. Control philosophy, observations, opinions, and general tips and tricks are discussed with the hope of assisting other plant personnel and expert system integrators.

During the past century, the Florida Phosphate Industry has established an enviable record of innovative technology in nearly all aspects of mining and beneficiation. A notable exception is the lack of technology to improve the present practice of storing waste clay in earthen dams. The rule which has been adopted by the Department of Natural Resources states, "Since storage of clay wastes for long periods of time interferes with expeditious reclamation and since above grade storage of clays takes otherwise useful land out of production and raises potential health and safety problems, below grade storage and rapid reclamation techniques are encouraged." The two waste products from the beneficiation plant are clay slimes (-0.1 mm in size) and sand tailings. The sand tailings do not present a problem since the tailings rapidly dewater to a dry weight of about 100 pounds/ft3 and make good land fill. By contrast, disposal of waste clay slimes is a formidable task. The basic problem is simply that the waste clay not only dewaters very slowly, but also that the ultimate solids content is very low and in most cases the volume of the clay greatly exceeds the available volume of below ground storage of the mined land.

INTRODUCTION Early rock-bolting practice usually consisted of ran¬domly installing bolts, using hand-held drilling equip¬ment such as air-leg mounted sinkers or stopers. As bolting technology evolved, the practice of installing uniform bolt patterns was developed, utilizing random bolt installation as required within the uniform pattern. The uniform rock-bolting technique, when used as the principal method of rock support, requires drills and jumbos designed specifically for rock bolting. This equipment is similar to conventional face drilling machines, except that the jumbos can orient the drills to obtain any necessary bolting angle; often, this means bolts may be installed at or near perpendicular to the centerline of the drift or stope opening. Fig. I shows a typical rubber-tired rock-bolting jumbo of the type commonly used in drifts and room-and-pillar mining. Modern rock-bolting jumbos are capable of drilling the required holes, inserting rockbolts, and torquing them to proper levels. Jumbos also are available for use with resin-anchored bolts. Probably the most unusual of this type utilizes a rotating bolt turret that carries the rock drill, resin charging unit, and the bolt in a single mechanism. Once the turret is loaded with the resin and bolt, further manual effort is not re¬quired. Drilling and bolt placement are accomplished by the operator from a station remote from the bolt site. Fig. 2 shows this turret device. Roof-bolting jumbos are available mounted on rail, crawler, or rubber-tired chassis. Various types of rock drills are used. Depending upon the type of rock, these may include rotary, percussion, or rotary-percussion drills. Fig. 3 shows a typical rail-mounted jumbo. During that time, federal programs, sponsored by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), the Office of High Speed Ground Transportation (OHSGT) and the Advanced Research Projects Administration (ARPA), stimulated tunnel research and development. Also, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and SME collaborated to create the Underground Construction Research Council (UCRC) and the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) series.

Gypsum wallboard manufacturers in the United States shipped 3.18 billion m2 (34.2 billion sq ft) of wall-board products during 2004 versus 2.93 billion m2 (31.5billion sq ft) in 2003. Following a historic high production of gypsum wallboard products in 1999, production decreased in 2000. But it has steadily increased during2001 through 2004. Wallboard production in the United States increased about 8.6 percent in 2004 from 2003. Following several years of a “building boom” of new wallboard plants and the expansion of the manufacturing capacity of several existing plants, 2004 was a relatively quiet year. However, several new plants and capacity expansions were announced or are in progress during 2004.

A new explanation of the scale dependency of the strength properties of rock is presented based on the theory of extremes. A review of past work on specimen size strength relationship is followed by an introduction to the fundamentals of the underlying theory of extremes and its relationship to the scale effect on the statistical properties of the strength distribution. It is shown that the weakest link theory is directly related to extremal statistics and properties of strength distributions of rock can be derived as a function of the specimen size. Three sets of Brazilian test data are used to demonstrate the use of this approach.

Tailings, from an active copper-zinc operation, containing about 10% sulphur were investigated to assess the onset of acid production and potential lime requirements for treatment of drainage. Oxygen consumption rates were measured over two years to verify spatial and seasonal variations in sulphide oxidation rates. Shallow cores were collected to assess the quality of tailings porewater and to characterize solids that had been subjected to oxidation and depletion of neutralization potential (NP) for several years. Oxygen consumption data were used to quantify rates of NP depletion and onset of acid drainage from the near- surface tailings. Based on measured oxygen consumption rates and identification of NP remaining in the tailings, future lime use in the treatment plant was expected to rise significantly without mitigation. Geochemical modeling calculations were calibrated with observed oxygen consumption rates and the model results agreed well with actual lime use in the waste water treatment plant during operations. The modeling also demonstrated the benefits of lower lime demands and treatment costs after closure as a result of construction a soil cover on the acid generating tailings.

The attapulgite industry saw a year of solid growth after a weaker 2003. Demand was up between 5 percent and 6 percent driven by almost all of the key markets. Construction continued to show record new housing demand, assisted by continued low interest rates. That drove strong growth in construction related markets like coatings, tape joint compounds and other construction materials applications. The agricultural markets rebounded modestly to increase sales for suspension fertilizers, animal feeds and pesticide carriers. Oil drilling also showed strong growth due to high oil and gas prices. Sales to molecular sieve applications grew due to petrochemical and construction demand. The export markets were assisted by further depreciation of the dollar. The only weak area was in nonagricultural granular sorbents, where other sorbent materials continued to dominate.

This paper describes work done by Placer Dome Technical Services Limited, a subsidiary of Barrick Gold, and Nautilus Minerals Inc. in support of the conceptual design of a subsea mining system. It describes an overall concept design plus specific studies into mechanical excavation at depth. The concept design includes one or more subsea excavators connected to a suction riser, which transports the cut material to a shipboard dewatering and offloading system. A multi-phase investigation was performed into the mechanical excavation of seafloor massive sulphides at depths of around 1600m. Rock samples were recovered and tested for rock properties and cutting behaviour. A small pick drum cutter was procured and tested on a representative concrete slab in a lab and tested again while submerged in a test tank. Finally the cutter was tested on a massive sulphide ore body at 1600m depth. The cutting performance results, e.g. pick forces and specific energies, should provide valuable input to the design of future full scale subsea mining systems.

Twenty-three companies mined kaolin in nine States in 2004. Production was estimated to be 7.6 Mt (8.3 million st) valued at $912 million, based on preliminary data. This was a slight decrease from 7.68 Mt (8.46 million st) valued at $939 million in 2003.Georgia was the leading producer state with an estimated 6.5 Mt (7.1 million st) in production. It was followed, in decreasing order of tonnage, by South Carolina, Alabama, California, Texas, Arkansas, Nevada, Florida and North Carolina. Georgia accounted for nearly the entire domestic water-washed, delaminated, and pigment-grade calcined kaolin production. Consumption Sales to the paper industry accounted for 49 percent of domestic sales and 64 percent of total sales. Other major markets for domestic sales were refractory products (10 percent), paint (5 percent), fiberglass (4 percent), catalysts (3 percent) and rubber (2 percent).Paper coating and filler markets accounted for about 87percent of export sales of kaolin.
