Microcomputers are becoming more convenient to use at all levels of the business world, including the mining industry and mine offices. The state of the mining industry requires that we become more productive and innovative in our analysis of deposits and operations. With the help of computers, examination of options to increase productivity can be performed quickly and inexpensively. Effective use of the computer for designing underground workings combines the calculation power and speed of a computer with the technical expertise and judgment of the engineer. Computer programs can perform calculations in minutes that could take an engineer several months. The engineer must be on guard when using the computer for any calculation because it is very easy to assume the results produced by a computer program are always correct. The computer is a sophisticated calculator but cannot recognize logical errors nor transposition of numbers. Also some intuitive or obvious decisions made by an engineer are difficult or impossible to program effectively.

In 1990, a residential area above the North Outfall Sewer (NOS) tunnel constructed in 1924, experienced subsidence. After sewage was diverted into the North Outfall Replacement Sewer (NORS), soil probing from within the tunnel was conducted, soil-improvement options were developed, and a preferred grouting scheme was analyzed by numerical modeling to evaluate the stability of the 80-year+ old tunnel liner under grouting-induced loading conditions. This paper discusses the initial field investigation and the development and analysis of a grouting scheme originally intended to be implemented before relining of the tunnel. The scheme was later modified, and the new liner was installed before the final probing and grouting work was done.

Four companies mined ball clay in four states during 2005. They included H.C. Spinks Clay (owned by Franklin Minerals), Kentucky-Tennessee Clay (owned by Imerys), Old Hickory Clay and Unimin. Production was estimated to be 1.32 Mt (1.45 million st) valued at $53.3 million, based on the results of a preliminary survey of the ball clay industry. Production in 2004 was 1.22 Mt (1.34 million st) valued at $54.1 million. Tennessee was the leading ball clay producer state with 61 percent of domestic production, followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky.

The Murray Mine was one of the first mechanized cut-and-fill underground gold operations in northern Nevada. At the end of 2002, mine production began to decline. So the mine entered a phase of remnant mining and began preparations to close down. The remaining mining took place along the ore waste boundary in previously condemned areas and in challenging ground conditions. To remain economically viable, new techniques were implemented in operations, geology, engineering and rock mechanics. These improvements pushed the edge of known and accepted mining practices and have allowed the Murray Mine to remain in operation.

A dump edge and vehicle proximity warning system is being developed at the Colorado School of Mines using GPS and wireless local area networks to improve the safety of off-highway trucks in open pit mines. After two years of research, software development, and testing in the laboratory, field tests are currently being carried out at operating limestone quarries and open pit mining operations to evaluate the effectiveness of the system under rugged operating conditions. This paper describes the progress made on this NIOSH-funded project and discuss, tests carried out recently, at the Morenci open pit copper mine in Arizona.

An 8.5-km (5-mile) conveyor has gone into operation in western Turkey to eco¬nomically transport crushed lignite from the mine area to a power plant. This conveyor has replaced trucks as the principal mode of transporting the lignite. One principal element of Turkish govern¬ment policy is the country's commitment to increase electricity supplies for mining and other industries. Lignite is an important source of electric power supply in Turkey. Production was about 48 Mt (53 million st) in 1987, amounting to more than 20% of the total power supply in Turkey. In the western Anatolia supply network, it plays a major role for power generation. Deposits are located in the Soma region of western Turkey. The lignite is of low quality, deposits are scattered, and the terrain is dif¬ficult and hilly. These conditions demand an economical and technically feasible method of transporting the raw material from mining areas to the central thermal power plant. The Soma power plant is located about 120 km (75 miles) northeast of Izmir, near the coast of Aegean Sea. An overland conveyor of a unique design has gone into commercial operation at the Soma power plant facilities of the Turkish state electricity organization, Türkiye El¬ektrik Kurumu (TEK). The conveyor re¬places truck transport to ensure economical use of the lignite deposits. Computer-aided design (CAD) added more precision, qual¬ity, and flexibility of engineering in design activities. It also helped quick realization of the project that was executed in cooperation with the German company Krupp Industri¬etechnik and the Turkish firm Gama Endüstri AS. Unique features The conveyor includes several major features rarely combined in a single flight: Overland long distance conveyor. • Horizontal curves. -Steep vertical concave and convex curves to match the difficult terrain. Down-hill conveying. Frequency converter drives with vari¬ able belt speed. Generating operation mode to backfeed the energy to the network. Layout The 8.5 km (5 mile) long conveyor takes the -200 mm (-8 in.) lignite from the primary crushing plant located near the mine to the central, final crushing plant located in the stockyard area near the power station. The drive and belt tensioning assemblies are situated near the tail end of the flight. The high voltage switchgear is housed in a room in the primary crushing plant build¬ing upstream from the conveyor flight. The Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits allows us to isolate the circuit classification system efficiency (CSE) from the mill?s grinding performance. The factors which affect circuit CSE are reviewed, with emphasis on water usage at the classifiers. It is shown that manipulation of such water usage can be carried out to improve plant grinding circuit efficiency, at times by more than 30 percent.

"Ore morphology plays a vital role during the milling and liberation of minerals. This study was carried out to understand the role of mineral crystallography and mineral interfaces on the milling and liberation processes. Data related to mineral crystallography, Vickers Hardness Number and beneficiation processes were collected from literature, and detailed statistical analysis was conducted to relate these parameters. Review of the crystallographic information of minerals present in ores indicates that molecular weight and cell parameters significantly affect milling and liberation characteristics. Mineral interfaces were classified into the three categories of coherent crystals, semi-coherent and incoherent crystals, and breakage behaviors were studied. The studied cases revealed that these material interfaces control the micropore properties that play a vital role in the initiation of intergranular and intercrystalline fractures which occur in siliceous manganese ores and dolomite as a result of thermal treatment. In contrast, banded hematite jasper and coal exhibited a much more complex fracture pattern due to their coherent interfaces and finer physical associations. This study explains the effect of the various types of interfaces on milling, and the approach can be helpful in developing a methodology to enhance mineral liberation with minimum energy consumption.IntroductionComminution is a vital unit operation in the mineralprocessing, cement-making, power-generation and pharmaceutical industries. Its importance in mineral beneficiation operations is increasing every year as a result of the growing need to exploit lower-grade ore bodies and process reject materials (Blazy et al., 1994; DOE, 2005). Low-grade ores require significant energy during grinding to liberate the valuable minerals, which are further separated from the gangues by various beneficiation methods. Various attempts have been made to enhance mineral liberation during grinding to minimize energy consumption. Most of these studies focused on the analyses of the compression mechanism, chemical additives, thermal treatment, microwave treatment and electric disintegration (Klimpel and Austin, 1982; Norgate and Weller, 1994; Bearman et al., 1997; Kumar et al., 2010; Wang et al., 2011; Singh et al., 2012). However, many of these efforts had limited success, and there is a need to see the problem from a fresh perspective."

One of the greatest environmental issues related to the development of the mining activity is the generation of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD). Many methods have been developed for AMD treatment, being wetlands a good option for heavy metal removal. In this sense, the implementation of artificial wetlands for the treatment of mining effluents would seem to be an environmentally friendly alternative. In this paper, we present the results on the elimination of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb and Fe) using two Peruvian native species such as Schoenoplectus californicus (C.A. Mey.) and Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. Ex Steud. The results show that Schoenoplectus californicus preferentially removes copper (82 and 90%), lead (88 and 92%) and iron (28 and 69%), whereas Phragmites australis removes copper (68 and 87%) and zinc (53 and 95%). Likewise, it is observed that the Schoenoplectus californicus mainly retains the ions in its root, copper (89%), zinc (84%) and iron (76%). While the Phragmites australis accumulates iron (62%) and copper (74%) in the steam and root part respectively

The design of slurry launders has usually been based on strictly empirical concepts. An examination of the most common procedures reveals that they do not account for many of the variables that are recognized as Significant for slurry transport. These may include flow rate, volume concentration of solids, solids specific gravity, solids size distribution particle shape, launder geometry, and roughness of the wetted surface. It was decided to develop a design procedure, which would accomplish two things: First: Take into consideration most of the known significant variables and systematize the procedure to assure consistent results. Second: Provide a rational basis for examining and utilizing operating data to refine and improve the system. To accomplish this, it was necessary to develop a basic design concept. This concept has been developed through a complex development history, and yet still appears workable and technically sound. That concept may be outlined as follows: First: The solids transport velocity is the fundamental basis for slurry launder design. Second: The stream configuration, hence the launder size, is integrated with the solids transport velocity so that the actual stream velocity exceeds the solids transport velocity. Third: The launder slope is that which will achieve the required actual stream velocity. It was originally planned to utilize a series of charts and nomographs for the design procedure. A nomograph, based on data given in Taggart's Handbook of Mineral Dressing (1), was developed to determine the solids transport velocity. The velocity thus determined was used with Manning charts to determine the launder slope .and configuration as though the fluid were water. It was planned to utilize a "slope adjustment factor" to increase the slope to compensate for the apparent viscosity of the slurry. All attempts to develop a suitable correction factor failed. This failure was principally due to the complex relationship of viscosity to the required slope. It was then decided to revise the entire approach. Specifically, the present procedure is based on the Darcy-Weisbach flow equation, which is rationally preferable to the Manning equation. The Camp (2) equation is used for the solids transport velocity. The necessity of reference to the Moody curves for the Darcy friction factor is avoided by using the Colebrook and White (3) equation. The resulting mathematics require iterative solutions for several of the unknowns.

The present study introduces a new approach to understand the copper dissolution rate and to find an adapted mathematical statement for particle shrinkage rate in a batch bioleaching system. Four size classes of a chalcopyrite concentrate, namely [D1 : (−54 + 44)μm, D2 : (−44 + 38)μm, D3 : (−38 + 25)μm and D4 : (−25)μm], were used in the batch bioleaching tests by applying a mixed culture of moderately thermophilic microorganisms. The pulp density and temperature were 8 (%w/v) and 50 °C, respectively. Findings delineated that the bioleaching time can be divided into two specific time intervals: first, the surface reactions were the prevailing controlling step; second, the prevailing mechanism was diffusion through the product layer, whereas the overall rate of the process may be related to both through a Q factor using a mixed model. A mathematical model was developed based on particle size distribution (PSD) and a kinetic model. Experimental validation of the mixed model was accomplished by the representative sample with d80 = 54 microns. Results showed that the PSD of the specific sample was in good agreement with Rosin–Rammler function. Besides, the simulation result of the conversion fraction had the best conformity with the experimental data (with a maximum error of approximately 7%). This paper should be considered as an initial part of a larger, global model for chalcopyrite concentrate bioleaching.

It is well recognized that machine type and machine characteristics play vital roles in the successful application of froth flotation in mineral processing. Since the early 1900s, a multitude of machine designs have been and are still being introduced in an attempt to improve flotation efficiency. Machines based on mechanical agitation have been the most dominant in industrial practice. However, in recent years there has been a growing interest in pneumatic flotation units because of their claimed simplicity, low cost, high throughput and good metallurgical performance. This work was carried out to assess the effectiveness of pneumatic flotation on a magnetite ore. The method was applied using a prototype pneumatic flotation device that utilized a suitable nozzle for bubble generation. Important variables of the process were examined and optimized, including the nozzle size, air flow rate and froth thickness. Further tests were conducted to determine the influence of frother dosage and to explore the improvements that could be made on concentrate grade and recovery by cleaning and scavenging. Under the best test conditions, an iron concentrate was obtained with a grade of 66.4% Fe and a recovery of 97.7%. Particularly, the recovery was superior in comparison to that of mechanical flotation. This was attributed to the ability of pneumatic flotation to create and maintain a relatively thick froth layer.

The principals of McCabe Industrial Minerals, Inc., have been involved in the mining, processing, and marketing of nonmetallic minerals for more than 40 years. In addition to marketing nonmetallic minerals produced by other companies, McCabe Minerals owns and operates three plants that produce headlap-roofing granules, with 25 employees and annual sales approaching $6 million. During its 22 years of operation, the company has developed many different markets, and a list of factors that is used in making our marketing and feasibility studies. These criteria (Table 1) are used extensively by the company in all of its projects, and we present this and other data about the company in this brief report. The first 0.7 m3 (1 cu yd) diesel load- haul-dump vehicle (LHD) arrived at the Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, SD in I969 to muck a ventilation drift. Others soon followed. Mechanization has subsequently changed stoping methods, manpower requirements, ventilation practice, the definition of minable reserves, and it has impacted safety and health. These have all had a direct bearing on the economics of producing gold ore from deep underground. Mechanized mining Before mechanization, production quotas at Homestake were met by several open cut-and-fill (OCF) mining methods. OCF mining relied on jackleg and wagon drilling, electric and compressed air slushing and cribbed raises brought up through the fill. Even square- set stoping was used until about eight years ago. The mine became 100% mechanized in 1988. The two current stoping methods are mechanized cut-and-fill (MCF) and vertical crater retreat (VCR). In 1992, MCF accounted for 54’S, VCR for 44% and development/uphole for 2% of the 1.4 Mt (1.55 million st) of underground ore produced. These methods are typically ramp- based and use diesel-powered LHDs, trucks, pneumatic drill jumbos and utility vehicles. Electric LHDs and rubber-tired compressed air muckers have also been used in VCR scrams. Pfarr (1991) and Mitchell (1980) provide good overviews of current production methods.

Although the number of operating longwall mining systems has remained relatively consistent over the past five years, longwall production levels have increased significantly during this period. Longwall production currently accounts for approximately 50% of U.S. underground coal production. While longwalls are highly productive and offer other advantages, operations employing this method of mining continue to experience dust compliance problems. This increased longwall productivity has meant that far more dust is being produced. An improved understanding of the longwall face ventilation system and advancement of face ventilation technologies are necessary to ensure all face personnel are allowed to work in an environment that is free of excessive levels of airborne respirable coal mine dust. The Dust and Toxic Substances Control Branch of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's Pittsburgh Research Laboratory has examined several basic principles of the longwall face ventilation system, and has evaluated the effectiveness of numerous improved face ventilation techniques for longwall mining systems. These include identifying improved techniques for measuring face ventilation parameters on longwall mining sections and investigating the fundamental relationship between face air flow and the entrainment and dilution of respirable coal mine dust. Studies have been completed to determine the impact on face dust levels from using belt entry air to ventilate the longwall. Novel methods have been identified to increase the amount of face air flow and to manage face air flow to most effectively minimize face workers' dust exposure. Unique systems of auxiliary face ventilation have been developed and evaluated at full-scale, simulated longwall test facilities. The theoretical and applied aspects of each of these principles and technologies are discussed. Application of these results, throughout the longwall mining industry, as documented from surveys conducted in the early 1980's and 1990's, have reduced the health hazard associated with excessive exposure to respirable coal mine dust.

The use of low-angle forward light scattering for measurement of particle size distribution has been described previously.1 Laboratory instrumentation using this technology is used routinely in operating plants for quality control and production control.2,3 Extension of the technique to on-line process monitoring and control has also been undertaken in several important areas. This paper will discuss the application of MICROTRAC R systems to the monitoring of particle size in wet slurry processes and dry powder grinding circuits. Examples of existing installations will be given with emphasis on performance and on-line reliability.

The Liaoning Dahuofang Reservoir Water Transfer Project is an important development for the Department of Water Resources of Liaoning Province in northeastern China. The 85.3 km water conduit will transport water from the Hun River downstream of the Huanren Reservoir to the outlet on the Suzi River leading to the Dahuofang Reservoir. The additional water is required to sustain the growing cities of Fushun, Shen-yang, Liaoyang, Anshan, Panjin and Yingkou. The project is divided into seven contracts. Three TBM contracts comprise almost 75% of the work and the others are drill and shoot. The focus of this paper is about the creditable TBM performances achieved and some of the problems encountered by Chinese contractors; notably two having had no previous TBM experience.

Historically, Vanadium and Uranium have been precipitated together in carbonate sill circuits. A separation of the salts of the two metals was then made on the basis of the fact that the reduced, salts of vanadium are more solo to and those of uranium lose soluble than the respective salts of higher valence. In practice this was carried out by fusing the precipitated combined concentrate with salt, sodium carbonate and sodium hydroxide with oil soaked sawdust mixed into the charge as the reducing agent. Generally the fusion was carried out batch wise and the resulting slag or glass leached in water. A good, fusion and three or four decantation washes resulted in almost complete recovery of the vanadium in the liquid phase and a very high recovery of the uranium as a dense black U02 solid.

Since the beginning of operations at the pellet plant at Ponta Ubu ES, Samarco Mineração SA has produced pellets for direct reduction and blast furnace processes. Of the total amount of pellets produced from 1977 through 1993, 55% are used in the blast furnace, about 45 Mt (49.6 million st). The principal components of pellet gangue are calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, silica and alumina. They should be added in adequate quantities to guarantee the mechanical resistance of the fired pellets under blast furnace conditions. Over the years, the pellets produced by Samarco had a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8% and varying binary basicity preferably between 0.8 and 0.85. On the other hand, the increasing amount of industrial waste in siderurgical plants caused by the increase of steel production has caused some countries to put into practice methods to reduce the volume of slag produced in the blast furnace. This paper’s goal is to find an alternative for decreasing the amount of slag produced in the blast furnace. It is possible to decrease pellet gangue by decreasing the silica content to about 2%, leaving the metallurgical properties and quality of pellets unaltered. For this work, Samarco pellets were used with SiO2between 2.5% and 2.8%, pellets with high silica and pellets with SiO2 between 2.0% and 2.3% low silica. Both were partially fluxed by the range of varying basicity CaO/SiO2from 0.8 to 0.95 during production.
