LKAB’s Kiruna Mine, located in northern Sweden, produces about 24 Mton of iron ore yearly using sublevel caving. For efficiency, the mine must deliver planned quantities of three ore products. We use mixed integer programming to schedule Kiruna’s operations, specifically, which production blocks should be mined, and when they should be mined to minimize deviations from planned production quantities while adhering to mining restrictions (e.g., sequencing). A new production block database and a well-formulated mixed integer programming model dramatically reduce the size of the original problem; in less than ten minutes we generate five-year schedules with time fidelity of months.

The year 1988 unexpectedly turned out to be a good year for the US coal industry. In fact, it was a third consecutive year of record coal production. Accord¬ing to preliminary Energy Information Administration data for 1988, domestic coal consumption went up 5%, or 41 Mt (45 million st), from 1987. Coal exports were up by a surprising 13.6 Mt (15 million st). In 1988, 22.7 Mt (25 million st) of coal were drawn from stockpiles for consumption. Even so, US coal production increased to 862 Mt (950 million st). That was up 28 Mt (31 million st) from 1987. While coal consumption, exports, and production were up, delivered prices for steam coal continued to slide during the year. Metallurgical coal prices, however, firmed up and showed a moderate increase. This reflected tight metallurgical coal markets at home and abroad. Coal consumption US coal consumption reached 800 Mt (882 million st), compared with 759 Mt (837 million st) in 1987. Increased metallurgical coal consumption was one factor. Most of the rise in coal consumption, however, was due to unexpectedly high electricity demand. Unseasonably hot summer weather al lowed added coal-fired electric generation to supplement the drought-related reduction in hydro-electric power supply. Electric utilities consumed 687 Mt (757 million st) of coal in 1988, 35.4 Mt (39 million st) more than in 1987. Coal-fired power plants remained the primary source of US electricity generation, providing 57% of the total in 1988. Coal consumption at coke plants increased 13%, to 38 Mt (42 million st), from the level consumed in 1987. This increase reflects the recent recovery in the iron and steel industry. Metallurgical coal consumption in 1988 could have been greater. But US coke plants reportedly reached their maximum practical production capacity. As a result, net US coke imports amounted to 1.45 Mt (1.6 million st). Despite increased industrial activities, steam coal consumption by industrial plants was up only slightly from the 1987 level, amounting to 69 Mt (76 million st) in 1988. Residential and commercial coal consumption remained virtually unchanged at 6.4 Mt (7 million st). Coal exports and imports US coal exports rebounded in 1988, reaching 86 Mt (95 million st). It was the highest level of annual US coal exports since 1982, when they reached 96 Mt (106 million st). An unusual set of factors led to an opening for US coal exporters in 1988: • a high level of industrial production in Japan and the European Economic Community, • supply disruptions due to labor problems at coal mines in Poland and Australia, • a drought-related reduction in hydro-electric power generation in Canada, requiring increased coal-fired generation, • China's problems in meeting its export commitments, and • a fall in the value of the US dollar. US metallurgical coal exports in 1988 amounted to 56 Mt (62 million st), 9.1 Mt (10 million st) more than the 1987 level. Europe, Japan, and Canada were the principal importers of US metallurgical coal in 1988. European countries, in particu¬lar, increased their take by one-third of US metallurgical coal. The labor problems in Poland and Australia contributed to these higher levels of imports. So did increases in pig iron production of 8% in Japan and 9% in the European Economic Community. US steam coal exports - including bituminous, anthracite, and lignite-increase to 30 Mt (33 million st). This was up from 25.4 Mt (28 million st) in 1987 Contributing to this overall rise were 1.8-Mt (2-million st) increase in shipments to Canada and a 2.7-Mt (3-million st) increase to Europe. Unaffected by the somewhat tighter world coal market, US coal imports showed a slight increase to 1.8 Mt (million st) in 1988. Colombia continue to be the leading exporter to the United States, followed by Canada and Venezuela. Venezuela's entry into the US market is a relatively recent one, having made its first significant shipment in the fourth quarter of 1987.

In 2002, many in the mining industry — companies, academia and government — realized that the industry would soon be facing a serious shortfall in salaried and hourly employees. Depending on whose numbers are to be believed, 20 percent to 50 percent of current mining professionals are expected to retire within five to 10 years. And there are not enough students currently enrolled in mineral-related programs to the fill the need. Part of the impending shortage in professionals was brought on by the industry’s negative image, which discouraged students from enrolling in mining engineering programs. Another part was that the industry was in the doldrums and was seen by the public as a dying industry.

Stope instability at Ashanti Goldfields Company Ltd. (AGC) is a major concern. Using information from field mapping, major discontinuity sets were defined, Rock Quality Designation (RQD) was determined. The stability of wedges in the stope walls was assessed using the commercially available computer program UNWEDGE(Rock Science, 1992). Analytical results indicate that the presence of graphite infilling in joints contributes to instability, while steeply dipping joints control wedge slabbing and wedge toppling in the hanging wall. Stable stope widths and dimensions were determined to range from8.1 to 30 meters (m).

This paper examines the desired blast fragmentation results associated with mining fleet performance at Sidney Quarry of Pike Industries, A CRH Company by reducing cycle times and hauling less oversize material generated from the blast to the crusher to increase the overall plant throughput. We are constrained with blast patterns due to the poorly sorted and fractured seams in the quarry, which is angled at 35° NE and dipping at 80° and runs parallel to the Interstate-95 highway on the east of the quarry boundary about 600 ft, making it challenging to alter the blast patterns for optimal yield. We evaluated multiple relationships between blast patterns in conjunction with loader diggability. Results analyzed include the digging hours, fleet cycle times, and the fragment size with the optimized blast design through 3GSM software to arrive at the optimal yield to maximize the crusher throughput. Our primary objective is to focus on safety with efficient cycle times and clean floors & clean face generation for better operational efficiencies. Secondly, to optimize the crusher yield which is an integral part of quarry operation. Further, this paper provides the utilization of 3GSM blasting techniques in quarry applications with computer vision fragmentation analysis and VizaLogix, a fleet management software to analyze the cycle times sampling.

An experimental study on the oxidation of chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), pyrite (FeS2), covellite (CuS) and chalcocite (Cu2S) particles was conducted by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. The oxygen concentration in the process gas was set to 40% and 70% (by volume) and a heating rate of 40°C/min was used. Response variables included the temperature of incipient reaction, the total exothermic heat of reaction, particle mass, morphology and mineralogy of the reacted particles. Based on the experimental data and phase stability calculations, reaction mechanisms were proposed to represent the behavior of the particles during oxidation. The reaction mechanisms were verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses of the oxidized particles and by thermochemical and mass balance calculations to reproduce the DSC and TGA data. Overall kinetic models were developed to represent the evolution of the exothermic heat of reaction as a function of time.

In 2006, McNally International Inc., in a joint venture partner-ship with Aecon Constructors, was the successful bidder on two York Region Tunnel Projects: the Bathurst Collector/Langstaff Trunk Sewers and the York Durham Sewer System (YDSS) Interceptor Sewer 19th Avenue, both in the Toronto area. These projects comprised a total of 13 km (8 miles) of 2.74 m (9 ft) finished diameter tunnels and are both part of the YDSS. Both contracts required the use of earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBM) with a precast concrete segmental liner.

This paper presents the details of the Kramer tunnel project in the Federal State of Bavaria, Germany. This road tunnel, which has been under construction since December 2019, is the key component of the western bypass of the town of GarmischPartenkirchen. Once completed, it will relieve the town’s central district from enormous volumes of traffic. The contractor is the joint venture named ARGE Kramertunnel consisting of BeMo Tunnelling and Subterra. The whole project will be completed and handed over to the project owner, Staatliches Bauamt Weilheim, in 2023. The opening of the entire bypass section including the tunnel to traffic is planned for 2024. The tunnel, with a total length of 3,609 m (2.24 miles) and an estimated cost of EUR 178 million (incl. VAT), is designed as a single-tube, double-lane structure with one traffic lane for each direction of travel. The safety issue that exists for single-tube tunnels is solved by a parallel escape tunnel passable for vehicles. All tunnels and ducts are excavated according to the principles of the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). In order to reduce the geological risk for the owner, the escape tunnel was supposed to be completed before the design process for the main tunnel ever began. The exploratory tunnel was awarded to a competitor with an separate contract.

In mid-April 1992, MINING ENGINEERING mailed a survey questionnaire relating to mining shovels and hydraulic excavators to 125 SME members working at surface mines or at the headquarters of companies that operate surface mines. The mailing was directed to individuals whose titles indicate that they have management or mine planning responsibilities for surface mining operations. A total of 56 usable surveys returned by June 17 are the basis of this report. Precious metals mines Eighteen precious metals mines or mining companies returned completed surveys in time to be included in this report. Of these, 14 use hydraulic shovels only for both ore and waste, I uses both hydraulic and rope shovels, and 2 use Caterpillar 988 front-end loaders for both ore and waste. (Of the latter 2, neither expects to be in the market for a shovel in the next three years. I of these 2 placed Harnischfeger P&H number one and O&K number two in response to the question, "Based on your current knowledge of their machines, which manufacturer would you likely chose to supply new shovels or excavators to a mine or mines operating under your responsibility, if you were in the market?") Another uses front-end loaders, make not designated. The latter does not expect to be in the market for mining shovels or excavators within the next three years. Of the final total of 14 precious metals mines using only hydraulic excavators to load ore and waste, 8 use Hitachi excavators only, 1 uses Demag excavators only, 1 uses Liebherr excavators only, 1 uses O&K excavators only, 1 uses Harnischfeger P&H and O&K excavators, 1 uses Harnischfeger P&H and Hitachi excavators, and 1 uses Hitachi and Demag excavators. Of the 14 precious metals mines using only hydraulic excavators, 7 use excavators in the 7.6 to 11.5 m; (10 to 15 cu yd) size range. Of these 7, 5 use only excavators in this size range, and they are used to load both ore and waste. 1 of the 7 also uses 11.5 to 17 m' (15 to 22 cu yd) excavators, and I also uses a 17 to 23 m3 (22 to 30 cu yd) excavator. Of the 7 remaining of these 14 precious metals mines that use only hydraulic excavators, 3 use 11.5 to 17 m' (15 to 22 cu yd), 2 use 17 to 23 m3 (22 to 30 cu yd), and 2 use less than 7.6 m' (10 cu yd) units.

SUMMARY A review is presented of the state of development of high pressure water jet equipment and of large impact hammers for rock tunneling. Information from the U.S.S.R. is based on published literature and three personal visits. Applicable papers which were presented at the International Symposium on Jet Cutting Technology in Coventry, England in April 1972 are reviewed. Data are presented on continuous jet systems, pulsed water cannons, and hydraulic-powered impact hammers with respect to the specific energy of rock breakage and potential application in tunneling machines. INTRODUCTION It has been estimated that the cost of underground excavation during the period 1970-1979 in 15 countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development will be over $54 billion, an increase of 104% over the period 1960-1969. It is expected that 55% of the tunneling construction will occur in hard rock (Ref. 1). Present tunneling machines are generally limited to soft and medium-hard rock. When used in hard rock, the cost of replacing mechanical cutter bits is high. There is considerable interest in the iron and steel industry in the development of technologies that can reduce carbon dioxide emissions, as the iron and steel industry is the third largest producer of carbon emissions in the world, after automobiles and the power generation industry. The E-Iron Iron Nugget Making Process, invented by Dr. Komar Kawatra and Dr. Tim Eisele, provided a major breakthrough in the iron making process as the process uses biomass in the form of hard wood or soft wood as the reductant in the place of coal. Dr. Kawatra recognized that biomass is rich in both carbon monoxide and hydrogen, two important reducing agents. This resulted in initial experiments conducted by Dr. Kawatra and Dr. Eisele in the laboratories of the Chemical Engineering Department of Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech) that prepared self-reducing pellets with wheat flour as the reductant and limestone/dolomite as the flux. Initial results were encouraging so they extended their work to include hardwood, which is in huge supply in the forests of Michigan and Minnesota, as the reductant. Dr. Kawatra has also applied the E-Iron Technology to other iron bearing minerals to produce pig iron grade iron nuggets. He used the E-Iron Process to convert red mud, a high iron waste product of the aluminum industry, into pig iron nuggets with the rare earth elements reporting to the slag. This work resulted in a patent with Dr. Kawatra and Dr. Michael Archambeau named as the inventors. Dr. Kawatra then extracted the rare earth elements as a separate high value bi-product using oxalic acid, which he produced from carbon dioxide. Dr. Kawatra also conducted a test program that produced pig iron nuggets from New Zealand beach sands. The vanadium in the beach sands was retained in the iron nuggets, recoverable as a valuable bi- product in a separate process. The titanium dioxide in the beach sands reported to the slag. This demonstrates the potential use of the E-Iron Process to convert the large ilmenite reserves in Northern Minnesota into pig iron and titanium dioxide. Another use of the E-Iron Process discovered by Dr. Kawatra was its ability to produce iron nuggets from manganiferous ores. Dr. Kawatra was able to direct the manganese into either the metal or slag by adjusting process temperature. The above discoveries are included in several patents that were assigned to Carbontec Energy. This presentation will only address the use of the E-Iron Process to produce pig iron nuggets from steel mill waste and un-pelletized, mid-grade iron ore. Carbontec Energy Corporation agreed to sponsor additional research directed at improving this new technology that would later be trade named, The E-Iron Process. Carbontec Energy conducted further work that proved that the E-Iron technology could also convert steel mill waste into metallurgically acceptable iron nuggets. Carbontec also collaborated with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Purdue University Northwest to conduct a Department of Energy (DOE) sponsored program that would use their high performance computer capability to both verify and model the E-Iron Process. Purdue University Northwest reported that the E-Iron Process can produce pig iron nuggets with 85% less carbon emissions than a blast furnace. The E-Iron Process is similar to the ITmK3 process, developed by Kobe Steel, that also produces iron nuggets but uses coal as the reductant.

Two great revolutions in mining occurred during the 20th century. The first took place almost 100 years ago (1903-1905) with Daniel Jackling’s experiment in the economies of scale for large-scale mining at Bingham Canyon. Jackling’s ideas changed the focus of base metal exploration toward lower-grade, high-tonnage deposits. The second revolution was the impact of environmental and social concerns on mining. It started near the end of the 20th century and is still under way. This article speculates on the effects of this second revolution on the future of mineral exploration.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is an attractive area of research in such fields as CO2 mineral carbonation, global warming and sustainable energy systems. In this study, carbonation efficiency for aqueous mineral carbonation (MC) was achieved through two steps,which include leaching of calciumfrom cement kiln dust (CKD) followed by the reaction of pure CO2 with the calcium hydroxide precipitates formed by the hydroxylation using NaOH. Response surface methodology (RSM) with a Box-Behnken design (BBD) was applied to optimize the calciumleaching yield,while the carbonation efficiency from CKD was assessed using RSMwith central composite design (CCD). Optimization of calcium leaching is highly important, as it is a rate-limiting reaction step in MC and also influences and enhances carbonation efficiency. Different parameters including acid concentration (HNO3), leaching temperature, leaching time, and dose of CKD sample were considered in order to optimize the maximum yield of Ca leaching from the CKD sample. In addition, different CO2 flow rates and temperatures were used as parameters for optimizing carbonation efficiency. Two quadratic regression models were developed for each process, i.e. calciumleaching and carbonation. For calcium leaching, a maximum of 98.55% calcium was extracted under the optimal set of acid concentration 4.13 M, 90 °C, 28 min leaching time, and 13.8 g of CKD sample. For carbonation, the maximum carbonation efficiency of 89.2% was achieved for a CO2 flow rate of 1163 cm3/min at 90 °C. Calcium leaching results indicate that the leaching yield was significantly affected by all the input parameters except leaching time. For carbonation, both factors affected the carbonation efficiency, with the effect temperature shown to be greater than that of the CO2 flow rate. Additionally, the predicted results agreed well with the experimental values for both calcium leaching and carbonation processes, with errors of less than 1% and 5%, respectively.

Silver, copper, and zinc are commonly known elements with antibacterial and antifungal capabilities. Attempts have been made to dope silver on minerals, glass, and ceramics and the resulting materials have been investigated for their antibacterial and antifungal properties. Since silver is expensive and very reactive, silver doped materials have been found inappropriate in some applications. Copper-vermiculite is investigated as an alternative. Vermiculite has high cation exchange capacity on the magnesium ion in the crystal structure. Copper ion may have a high tendency to replace magnesium because of similar charge interference and ionic radius. Copper-vermiculite is prepared by reacting vermiculite and copper chloride solution. By impregnating copper ions into the nanometer openings between the layers of vermiculite, it is possible to render the composite with antibacterial functions if the copper ions could be released gradually from the composite. The antibacterial efficiency of Cu-vermiculite against Escherichia coli was studied using the Halo method. The results show that Cu-vermiculite is effective for preventing the reproduction of the bacteria. Heat treatment of Cu-vermiculite at up to 400°C does not show significant changes in antibacterial activities.

The US Bureau of Mines is cooperating with Cyprus Mineral Park Mining Co., Columbia University, and the US Geological Survey in investigating the feasibility of applying in situ leach mining methods to fracture-hosted, supergene copper sulfide (chalcocite) ores. This paper presents the initial findings of mineralogical, hydrogeological, and geochemical characterization studies conducted at the Mineral Park mine, located in the Wallapai mining district of northern Arizona. A design for in situ leaching is proposed that would minimize the need for blasting prior to leaching, and would enable economical development of deep reserves at the Mineral Park mine. The in situ leaching design would also reduce the potential for long term acid rock drainage.

The project now under construction will comprise a 1.2 km long raw water aqueduct, a major new 0.25million cubic metres per day water treatment works (with space for upgrading to 1.2Mm³/d), a 12.1 km long treated water aqueduct and a primary service reservoir. This paper describes an installation of a medium-voltage adjustable frequency motor drive (AFD) on a high starting torque regrinding mill. This type of application is typically found in the mineral industry dealing with hard ore. The AFD electrical architecture is introduced from line to load. The type of closed loop encoder feedback motor control algorithm is briefly described. The results of the AFD motor identification auto-tuning are compared against the manufacturer’s supplied data. The motor drive performance results are shown for pre-ramp DC fluxing, high starting torque with overload current, excessive load torque stall condition, and blocked rotor. The instrumentation and arrangement for the two watt-meter method to capture low frequency data are presented. The data shown is from the input power quality meter, the AFD computer tool, the output motor protection relay, an oscilloscope, and load shaft connected strain gauge (rotating telemetry for torque assessment). These types of high starting torque constant torque loads are found in mining and process industry applications employing AC adjustable frequency drives. Using field results should help demystify the use of voltage matching output transformers in AFD applications including constant torque loads

Since the report of the 1972 Rapid Excavation Conference in the city of Chicago, speculation has continued concerning the estimates of tunneling demand. Little has been published that would persuade me to modify substantially the rather tentative estimates that originated with the National Academy of Sciences-National Academy of Engineering (NAS-NAE) study of 1968 which were recomputed by the United States in the survey of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in 1970. The OECD estimates, of course, hedged the really difficult question of forecasting civil construction tunneling demands. In the United States contribution, this was done by predicting both an upper and lower bound for important categories of demand. A discounting procedure was then applied to each of the major sectors of expenditures, permitting a forecast that reflected the current subjective assessment of how extensively and how likely cities were to adopt plans that required tunneling. This was done for water, utilities, transportation and other novel underground facilities. The purpose of this paper is a modest one. In it I wish to describe the efforts made since 1972 to generate more thoughtful and more robust estimates of urban sector demands, and to apply what has been learned to the most difficult category of predictions: those for urban mass transit systems. You and I can visit cement plants, inspect the various rotary kiln systems and find some equipment or some burning techniques that waste energy--fuel and power. After we have made such a visit and studied a few ideas, we could recommend ways to eliminate much of this waste. Probably every idea would cost money to bring into action. For our discussion, let us arbitrarily set an upper limit of $1,000,000 on the recommendations that we are allowed to make. Call these "low-cost" or "short-term" measures. They are improvements that do not require more than say, three months to complete; they do not require a major revision to the process. Other recommendations are "high-cost" or "long-term"; they are outside the scope of this discussion. Some of our "low-cost" recommendations would offer a satisfactory return on the money that they cost; the remainder would not. Now, is there some way that we can rather quickly pick out the "low-cost" measures that will show a satisfactory return and spend our time making these improvements first? Can we separate these items from those where the return is less likely to be good? I feel that we can pick some of these items quickly if we have a kiln system that has consistently non-uniform day-to-day operation. If the operation is uniform we probably cannot pick them quickly.

Sodium sulfate is one of the larger tonnage industrial minerals. A little more than half of this tonnage — 3 Mt/a (3.3 million stpy) of natural product— is recovered from ore deposits. Most of the rest is produced as a byproduct from other manufacturing operations. Sodium sulfate is mined in a variety of ways. These include conventional room-and-pillar mining, strip mining, in situ leaching of thick ore beds, solar evaporation and cooling-crystallization of lake brine, and the pumping of brine from complex salt deposits. There is also a variety of commercial sodium sulfate ore sources. They include thenardite (the mineral form of sodium sulfate, or Na2SO4), mirabilite (glauber salt,Na2SO4•10H2O), glauberite (Na2SO4•CaSO4), astra-kanite (bloedite; Na2SO4•MgSO4•4H2O), burkeite(2Na2SO4•Na2CO3), sodium sulfate-containing caliche and various brines.
