A proven high grade reserve of gold mineralization located in Mexico is evaluated to determine which gold recovery process is best suited for this deposit. The processes evaluated are; Heap leaching, Vat leaching and a CIP circuit. All qualify as viable options, however each one presents a different economic picture which is impacted substantially by the financial constraints of the project. Taking this into consideration the most economic process was selected.

Kaolin clays from five different commercial deposits in Georgia were studied to understand the variations of zeta potential and related fundamental properties. The results suggest that higher negative zeta potential is related to exchangeable or soluble calcium ions in the clays.

In Arctic surface mines, frozen ground adds to the complexity of slope stability analysis. The seasonal temperature change may thaw permafrost, and this thawed ground is often unstable. A computer program, GEODYNE, was used to simulate the movement of the thaw front in bare and insulated permafrost slopes. The simulation shows that the insulation can be used on mine slopes to prevent thawing.

A fuzzy sets based method is used to derive response surfaces/curves representing the dependence between basic parameters of the shield, as the initial setting pressure and the stiffness on the response metric, i.e. the convergence and load increase during a working cycle.

Commercial operations at the open pit, heap leach Crofoot Mine commenced in April, 1988. Approximately 13,600 tonnes (15,000 st) of low grade pregnant solution are treated daily using a Merrill-Crowe circuit. Acceptable gold recoveries from these low grade solutions can be obtained by optimizing solution pre-treatment prior to zinc addition.

Chloride leaching has many advantages compared with other alternative processes to cyanidation because it has increased metal solubility, improved redox behavior and high leaching rate properties. Also, chlorination is a nontoxic and environmentally friendly process, which is sought by the mining and metallurgy industry. In addition to these advantages, chloride is an effective reagent for the dissolving of metals from refractory ores and process residues that have trace amounts of valuable metals waiting to be valorized.

Although the required quantity of explosives for secondary blasts is less, noise and fly rock can have an enormous environmental impact. In a major hydropower project in the Himalayas, during excavation of tunnel, hydrothermal gradient line appeared and caused extremely unfavorable conditions with rock and water temperature varying between 55°–66°C and nearly 100% humidity. Major changes in method of excavation, schedule of works, deployment of additional equipments and acclimatization of personnel were made to complete this unfavorable stretch of world’s longest Head Race Tunnel. The case study covers the various aspects of tunneling in geothermal rocks, inhuman working conditions, loss of production, cost overrun, contractual claims and strategy to manage such unfavorable working conditions.

This paper introduces the methods of adjustment over air pressure, air quantity and the method of comprehensive adjustment over air resistance during a mine ventilation survey.
