In order to deliver a quality shotcrete and concrete product underground for the extensions to the Cullinan Diamond Mine operations it was decided to develop a new, simpler concrete product to meet underground support requirements. The aim was to develop a concrete product that not only reduced costs but also met the performance criteria of the current range of concrete products used on Cullinan Diamond Mine, a 25, 45 and 60 MPa concrete and a fibre reinforced wet shotcrete. The concrete product batching and delivery system was to be from surface as opposed to the current underground batching systems. The operational principle was to include an automated surface batching plant with delivery of the concrete product to a borehole containing suspended pipelines delivering to an underground storage facility from where the product is delivered to the working area by further pumping or agicars. Early research showed that the separation of particles based upon their density was not possible in steadily rising air streams. The terminal velocities of moving spheres are determined by their aerodynamic characteristics. This prevents particle separation by density in standard air classifiers. Passive pulsing air classifiers have accelerated airflow in certain regions, which achieves density-dominant separation. Numerical simulation of airflow within passive pulsing air classifiers was done to estimate airflow patterns near a damper. Analysis of those results shows the significant acceleration of the airflow above the damper. Laboratory trial separations have shown that passive pulsing classifiers are superior to standard air classifiers. A low noise blast hole drilling system was developed to limit the risk of noise-induced hearing impairment in mining operations. Noise- induced hearing loss has been identified as a major occupational health risk in SA mines. The noise generated by pneumatic percussion drills is a major contributor to such noise-induced hearing loss. This motivated the South African Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) to commission the development of a low noise rock drill system. The system had to be designed, manufactured, tested and demonstrated in a simulated underground mining environment. The specification required noise levels below 90 dBA. Other important design considerations were ease of manual transport, setting up and operation. The primary design concept was to encapsulate a standard SecoS215 pneumatic rock drill in a composite material tube. The tube is pushed onto the rock face by a pneumatic cylinder and is sealed at the rock face by an elastic seal. The drill is pulled towards the rock face by a rope and pulley mechanism fitted inside the tube. This mechanism is powered by a second pneumatic cylinder. The actions of moving and setting the drill require two persons. However, the team can carry out the drilling function itself on several drills simultaneously because of the self-thrusting design. The drill is supported by two camlocks. The exhaust (air containing dust, water, rock debris, oil and grease) is removed from the encapsulating tubes via an exhaust tube to the end of the stope. In this way exhaust noise and air pollutants are disposed of away from personnel. Tests were conducted in a test stope. Noise levels of under 90 dBA were achieved, thereby attaining the primary design specification. This was achieved without materially compromising ease of handling. The use of valuable minerals is a necessity to maintain a modern society. Not only the iron, aluminium, coal and oil that are used in large quantities, but also the uranium, copper, vanadium, tungsten, antimony and many others play an essential role in the bigger picture of our modern civilisation. Minerals occur in a form and in places determined by a long history starting at the dawn of creation. Over billions of years the elements have combined in wondrous combinations and structures. They have been broken up by massive explosions, movements in the earth's crust and erosion by wind and water. They have been restructured and recreated in even more configurations by the application of heat and pressure, leached by and exposed to new chemical compounds. The result is that most valuable minerals are found in impure form and mixed up with other, less useful waste material. 2. Mineral Beneficiation The processes used for the purification and enhancement of an ore, to satisfy the needs of downstream applications, are collectively referred to as mineral beneficiation. Mineral Beneficiation starts in the mine where only that portion of the ore, that can be economically processed, is selectively extracted. It may also include ore blending, to ensure a more consistent feed to the following stage of valuable mineral recovery. The next stage in mineral beneficiation is the liberation of the valuable minerals from the gangue. This is achieved by blasting, crushing, milling and grinding down to an adequately fine grain size to facilitate good separation. Separation can be achieved by a variety of different techniques. ?Screening coarse from fine particles is an easy method if the valuable mineral is dominant in a certain screen fraction. ?Magnetic separators can differentiate minerals on the basis of their difference in magnetic susceptibility. ? Electrostatic separators differentiate on the basis of electrical conductivity. ? The differences in density are exploited in spirals and jigs. ? Particular surface properties provide a separation technique in flotation. ?The selective sorption properties of a collector medium are another option.

The question of what stress condition exists in the hangingwall of tabular stopes remains topical and largely unanswered. Limited field data exist to quantify the situation and provide calibration for investigative computer modelling exercises. Work conducted in1989 and 1990 under a Chamber of Mines Research Organization (now the CSIR: Division of Mining Technology) programme of research into the behaviour and benefits of backfill may assist with this situation. The original work was motivated by the premise that the improved hangingwall stability in backfilled panels (identified by rockfall accident analyses) is due to a change in the hangingwall stress regime. Current, largely theoretical, studies into mechanisms of stope hangingwall behaviour and support interaction could benefit from considering these data. The genesis of Simrac?s technology transfer practices and future initiatives are discussed in this report. Simrac produces a relatively large volume of research-based health and safety outputs that must be communicated to its tripartite stakeholders and to other interested and affected parties. The wide spectrum and complexity of the transferables, together with the diversity of end-user needs and skills of the recipient population, necessitate customizing of technology transfer practices. In an attempt to optimize this process, a variety of practices are employed. Information is transferred by means of publication and dissemination of a variety of reports (paper, website and CD).Knowledge transfer is directed to health and safety practitioners by means of workshops, seminars, best practice booklets, handbooks and textbooks. Promotion of recently completed projects is directed at targeted recipients by means of project launches. Only isolated cases of piloting and implementation of technologies have been undertaken due to lack of resources and past organizational focus. It is anticipated that Simrac?s new organizational structure and management system, together with end-user involvement by industry champions, from project inception to implementation, will enhance the effectiveness of the technology transfer process.

The work described forms part of a Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) funded project, currently an ongoing programme of research aimed at providing ?improved criteria, guidelines and the use of numerical models to design mine layouts at depth, so as to reduce seismicity and enhance worker safety?. The entire project deals with a number of distinct, albeit interrelated, research areas such as: subsidence and caving in hardrock, general numerical criteria for layout design, regional benefits of backfill, concrete pillars, strike stabilizing pillars and bracket pillars. This paper will focus on the last two items only. New considerations for the design of both stabilizing pillars and bracket pillar layouts are briefly discussed.

It is actually a highly emotive place where interaction with people is a fundamental part of its ability to perform satisfactorily.The company, through its employers, expects employees, including new graduates, to have the ability to cope adequately with this emotive environment. The graduate is frequently unable to meet this expectation because he/she has not been developed to do so. Technical knowledge is his only asset. This deficiency manifests itself in leadership shortcomings, both intrapersonal and interpersonal. Further analysis reveals a deficiency in three elements of leadership - self-awareness, oral communication, and an ability to work cooperatively in teams.To address these three elements of leadership, Sasol Coal, a subsidiary of the big petrochemical company in South Africa, sponsored a leadership programme at the University of Pretoria for their final-year bursary students in the faculty of Engineering. This programme, the Sasol Engineering and Leadership Academy (SELA), consisted of a number of interventions designed to address the three areas of self-awareness, oral communication, and cooperative behaviour in teams. These interventions varied from an intrapersonal nature to interpersonal aspects. Psychometric assessments were followed by experiential modules dealing with the three constructs.SELA was evaluated at the end of the year. The results showed a positive shift in the main constructs of self-awareness, communications, and cooperation. This was measured quantitatively and qualitatively. Conclusions were drawn and recommendations for improving the programme were proposed."

Since AlphaGo defeated the best human player in the game of Go in 2016 - something thought to be an impossible achievement - machine learning, deep learning and reinforcement learning have caught the attention of scientists, the media and the general public alike. This recent development in machine learning (let us remember that neural networks have been available for decades now) opens new possibilities in the areas of modelling and process control. However, little has been reported in the minerals processing industry about these new possibilities and opportunities. This paper presents and introduces the topic of reinforcement learning and the different platforms that allow its implementation. The paper shows the consequences of using reinforcement learning for the specific area of process control and optimisation. As an example, the authors present the use of reinforcement learning for the control of a SAG mill closed with a pebble crusher using industrial data from an operation. A comparison with advanced model-based process control is provided, showing the benefits and shortcomings of reinforcement learning as a new control and optimisation technique. "In 2017, Petra Diamonds completed the construction and commissioning of a modern, fit-for-purpose diamond processing plant at Cullinan Diamond Mine (CDM). The design of CDM’s milling circuit is unconventional in that it comprises an autogenous (AG) mill with a grate discharge with large ports, low-revolution jaw crushers, and high-pressure grinding roll crushers with large operating gaps. In this paper we review the design to provide guidance on what is expected from the milling circuit and to demonstrate how the design aims to address challenges experienced in the old plant, which was based on staged crushing technology. We assessed the performance of the CDM AG milling circuit from commissioning and early production stages to examine its impact along multiple dimensions. In the assessment we sought to understand the lessons from our milling circuit regarding diamond liberation, energy consumption, and the future of diamond processing as a whole. IntroductionCullinan Diamond Mine (CDM), previously known as Premier Mine, is an underground diamond mine owned by Petra Diamonds. Petra Diamonds is a leading independent diamond mining group and a growing supplier of rough diamonds to the international market. Petra Diamonds is listed on the Main Market of the London Stock Exchange under the ticker ‘PDL’. Petra’s total resource of 305 million carats ranks third by size after De Beers and ALROSA (Petra Diamonds, 2018).CDM was established in 1902. The mine rose to prominence in 1905, when the 3106 carat Cullinan Diamond — the largest rough diamond of gem quality ever found — was discovered there. The mine has produced over 750 stones that are larger than 100 carats and more than a quarter of all the world's diamonds that are larger than 400 carats. Cullinan is renowned as a source of large, high-quality gem diamonds, including Type II stones, as well as being the world’s most important source of very rare blue diamonds (Petra Diamonds, 2018)."

Ferroalloy producers are large-scale users of electrical energy, which in many countries is in short supply and increasingly expensive. Preheating and/or pre-reduction using natural gas, recycled furnace gas or coal fines have lowered the specific use of electricity, but the high energy concentration necessary for most reduction processes can be achieved only by the use of high electric currents. Most countries have insufficient electricity to supply the demands of industry and the domestic consumer, particularly during certain periods of the day and certain times of the year. The generation and distribution of electricity is a large-scale expensive business, which is financed and managed directly or indirectly by government bodies in most countries. Both economic and political imperatives determine how much electrical energy is made available to whom and at what price. In South Africa demand is set to outstrip supply within the next few years, and the local supplier Eskom has moved from a traditional demand tariff pricing structure to a time-of-use tariff pricing so as to limit peak demand usage. This will mean a substantial increase in electricity cost to those users unable or unwilling to reduce consumption during peak periods. The optimal use of the available electrical energy depends both on the process, the furnace size, the configuration and infrastructure of each plant and its cost structure. As the cost and availability of electricity is set to change dynamically, the management of the situation becomes a real time control and optimisation problem. This paper discusses some the process and operational constraints associated with low- or no-load conditions and how to manage the situation. Electrode management will be one of the key issues.

Slags have been produced as by-products from pyrometallurgical processes for thousands of years, and have generally been regarded as waste. Many of these slags are no longer seen as residues merely to be discarded, but as potential economic sources of metals, or as useful by-products in their own right. Slag cleaning can enhance the recovery of valuable metals in existing pyrometallurgical processes, or can produce economic value from recycling old slag dumps. For example, a process has been developed and implemented industrially for recovering cobalt from copper smelting slag in a DC arc furnace. The relatively non-leachable behaviour of glassy slags allows them to be used as a very safe means of disposal of metallurgical waste streams, including many that are classified as hazardous. The high temperatures, reducing conditions, and good mixing that can be achieved in a DC arc furnace enable the effective functioning of this environmentally beneficial means of disposal. Lead blast furnace slag can be rendered safe for disposal by treating it using the Enviroplas process, which strips most of the hazardous lead from the slag (and traps the rest in an insoluble glassy slag) and recovers economic quantities of zinc by absorbing (in a lead splash condenser)the zinc vapour that is fumed off in the furnace. Another example can be seen in the recovery of a chromium- and nickel-containing alloy from stainless steel plant dust, while producing a disposable residual slag. The examples presented here illustrate that it is possible to develop processes that are both economic and environmentally beneficial. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B Eng (Metallurgical Engineering) degree Steel was sampled after calcium treatment, to follow changes in inclusion composition during the processing of alumium-killed steel into continuously-cast billets, at Mittal Vereeniging. There is some shift in the distribution of inclusion compositions towards alumina, as the liquid steel moves from the ladle to the tundish. This shift may reflect some reoxidation. However, the effect on inclusion modification is small, since only a small fraction of the tundish oxide inclusions is fully solid?which agrees with the plant observation that these heats cast without clogging. Magnesium oxide in the inclusions contributes to liquid formation, substantially increasing the range of lime: alumina ratios over which the inclusions are partially or fully liquid.

Quantitative seismology is an important tool for investigating mineinduced seismicity and the quantification of the seismic rock mass response. The spatio-temporal interpretation of seismic data within an ever-changing three-dimensional mining environment provides some challenges to the interpretation of the rock mass response. A grid-based approach for the interpretation of spatial variation of the rock mass response provides some benefits compared with approaches based on spatial filters. This paper discusses a grid-based interpretation of seismic data. The basic methods employed in the evaluation of the parameter values through space are discussed and examples of applications to different mine sites given.

The effect of grinding media performance on milling and operational behaviour was demonstrated under different selected conditions of calcium carbonate slurry milling. A variety of grinding media materials and bead sizes, along with two different stirrer tip speeds, were used in the grinding process to generate a particle size reduction of the calcium carbonate (CaCO3). To determine the optimum milling parameters the collected test data were used to calculate and evaluate specific energy as well as stress intensity under different milling conditions. Resue mining was practiced extensively in the East Rand in the first half of this century. The obvious benefits were that a higher grade of ore was trammed to the surface. The disadvantages were slow rates of face advance and an extremely labour-intensive method of mining. A collaborative effort by personnel from Avgold?s Target Gold Mine and Sandvik Tamrock has resulted in the design of a method of resue mining which can be totally mechanized. The purpose of this paper is to describe the methodology used and the proposed new mechanized resue mining method.

The feasibility study of Escondida Norte (ENorte), recommended a slope angle design for the Final Pit. But, according to the experience obtained with the slope adjacent to the West wall of ENorte, in which Compañia Minera Zaldívar (CMZ) gained in its phase 4, a slope of similar geotechnical characteristics will be exposed in the West Wall of Phase 1 (Premine) and of the Final Pit, with an interramp angle 53º and with very good stability results. In this regard, Minera Escondida Ltd. (MEL) performed a study of the slope angles for the phases mentioned and according to this delivered the results of this evaluation, the recommendations and/or the necessary conclusions in the design to ensure that the slopes are stable enough and may enable safe operational management of them.

The South African based platinum mines produce the world?s majority of platinum metal that is used in autocatalysts and jewellery. As the platinum market is forecast to grow at healthy rates into the future, the South African producers, Anglo Platinum, Impala, Lonmin and Northam are planning to expand in the next decade. Furthermore a number of smaller producers who are accessing other mineral rights are entering the buoyant market. The South African platinum mines have traditionally exploited the Merensky reef of the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC); however, the mining of this reef is reaching depths that require significant vertical shaft systems and costly refrigeration for access to the ore bodies at deeper levels. In the past decade all of the producers have begun to mine the less attractive UG2 reef because of its cheaper mining costs. This UG2 reef contains significant quantities of chromite with typically a chrome-to-iron (Cr/Fe) ratio of 1.35. UG2 ores can contain between 10 and 25% Cr2O3 depending upon the reef width and the selected mining method. It is relatively cheap and easy to extract a portion of the chromite from a platinum concentrator tailings stream at a grade of between 40-42% Cr2O3. However it is only in recent years that some ferrochrome producers have begun to source some of their chromite from the tailings of platinum producers. South Africa is also the world?s largest single producer of ferrochrome and supplies much of the world?s stainless steel producers and thus the growing market for their product. As the traditional sources of high Cr/Fe ratio ores have been depleted at the shallow economic depths and thus have become more expensive sources of chromite, technical developments have improved the ability to use fine chromite economically to make acceptable grades of ferrochrome. Thus UG2 fines are now becoming possible cheap sources of acceptable feed to the ferrochrome industry. The abundance of feedstock for ferrochrome production and the lessening dependence on mined material will impact upon the structure of the ferrochrome business in South Africa. With continued platinum mining from UG2 reefs, South Africa is set to remain highly competitive in the world?s ferrochrome/stainless steel industry.
