Current metallurgical processes lack selective and efficient REE recovery from aqueous leach liquors. Antisolvent crystallisation is used to selectively recover pure inorganic salts from aqueous solutions without excessive chemical use in ambient conditions. Yttrium sulfate octahydrate (Y2(SO4)3.8H2O) was used as a representative rare earth salt to investigate the effect of antisolvent selection on the crystal morphology and size distribution of the final crystalline product produced through antisolvent crystallisation. The antisolvents of choice were short length alcohols that are water miscible i.e. methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol and t-butanol. All experimental parameters except the type of antisolvent were kept constant under isothermal conditions. The large reduction in solubility of the salt by the antisolvent creates high supersaturations. This leads to high product yields as observed in this study at > 91%. In general, a variety of morphologies were successfully formed in each individual alcohol including; rods, plates, prismatic cubes and starburst clusters. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated that Y2(SO4)3.8H2O was the only species present for all final products. There was a change observed from the starburst and rod structures for the shorter alcohols towards prismatic cubes for the longer alcohols due to different strengths in the solute-antisolvent interaction at the crystal growth faces. The crystal sizes increased with an increase in the alcohol chain length because of the lower supersaturation conditions due to a limit in the mass transfer induced by the bulkier alcohol structure. In conclusion, it has been shown that the particle morphology and size can be greatly affected by the selection of antisolvent even under high supersaturation conditions, contributing to understanding the effect of different antisolvents on the final particle characteristics. The engineering of favoured product characteristics can therefore be achieved by antisolvent crystallisation, presenting a viable alternative process for the recovery of REE. The research described in this paper was done to confirm the Upper Group 2 (UG2) PlatMine peak pillar strength formula (Watson et al., 2007), which was determined from a back-analysis of failed and unfailed pillars. Underground measurements were made on a stable pillar that was loaded by firstly reducing it’s length and then by mining the surrounding pillars until pillar failure took place. The pillar was instrumented with suitably positioned strain cells and closure meters, which allowed both the average pillar stress and strain to be determined. The paper describes the methodology applied to identify a suitable position for the instrumentation, as well as the results. A stress/strain curve is presented for a UG2 pillar with a w/h ratio of 2.0, at Booysendal Platinum Mine. The measured pillar strength was similar to the predicted strength using the PlatMine pillar strength formula for UG2 pillars. The PlatMine formula has been successfully implemented on Booysendal Platinum Mine, and about 3 670 pillars have been cut without a single failure. An additional revenue of US$1.3 billion was calculated for the 25-year life of the mine as a direct result of the improved pillar design, given the January 2020 platinum group metals basket price. An extended life of mine and better mining efficiencies will also be realized.

High-profile failures of tailings dams illustrate the significant safety challenge they pose. The decant pond of such facilities plays an important role in their mechanical stability. This study investigates the feasibility of using public multispectral data collected by the Sentinel-2 satellite mission to monitor the area of the decant pond. The Sentinel-2 mission has a revisit time of 5 days and the data used herein has a spatial resolution of 10 m/pixel. We considered two water-detection metrics: the normalized difference water index (NDWI) and the near-infrared (NIR) reflectance. Implementation of the method at a South African platinum tailings dam illustrates the capabilities and limitations. Public, sub-metre resolution true-colour imagery served as validation data. There is good agreement between pond area measurements based on Sentinel-2 and the validation imagery. These results suggest the feasibility of using Sentinel-2 data to supplement the monitoring of the decant pond.

"The Zambian copper mining industry as we know it today had its genesis in the 1920s. Consistent private sector-driven investment in the industry over a period of over 50 years in exploration, mine development and operation, development of minerals processing facilities, building of infrastructure for pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processing, with attendant support facilities, including building of whole new towns, resulted in copper production rising to a peak of 769 000 t in 1969, providingover 62 000 direct jobs. The industry was nationalized in 1973 and remained in government hands for just over 24 years. During this period, the industry experienced a serious decline in production levels, reaching the lowest level in the year 2000 when production was 250 000 t. An average of just under 2000 jobs were lost every year in the 24-year period, reaching just over 22 000 direct jobs in 2000.Following the return of Zambian politics to pluralism and liberalized economic policies, the government decided to privatize the mining industry. The process started in 1996 and by the year 2000 all the mining assets had been privatized. The new investors embarked on serious investment to upgrade the assets and to develop greenfield mining projects. Fourteen years later and after more than US$12 billion investment, production levels increased year-on-year to a peak of 763 000 t in 2013 with direct jobs reaching 90 000.This paper discusses the impact of the mining industry in Zambia on the economy in areas such as employment, support for other industries, direct contribution to the national gross domestic product (GDP), foreign exchange earnings, and social amenities. The paper also focuses on the performance of the mines during these periods vis-à-vis mineral availability, mineral grades and complexity, new technologies, and human capital. This is looked at particularly in the light of current challenges the industry is facing. Suggestions are proposed on how the industry can be nurtured to continue being a major driver for the Zambian economy and a major player in the international copper mining business."

This paper investigates the recovery of platinum group metals (PGMs) from a dilute cyanide leach solution containing base metals, in a manner similar to that used for gold extraction in a typical CIP process, and focuses on both the adsorption and elution stages. The carrier-phase extraction of precious metals using activated carbon offers significant advantages over other processes in terms of simplicity, the high pre-concentration factor, rapid phase separation, and relatively low capital and operating costs. As a sorbent, activated carbon is still by far the most important material because of its large surface area, high adsorption capacity, porous structure, negligible environmental toxicity, low cost, and high purity standards. Adsorption tests were performed on a pregnant alkaline leach solution (0.15 ppm Pt, 0.38 ppm Pd, 0.1 ppm Au) resulting from cyanide extraction performed in column leach tests. The initial adsorption rates of platinum, palladium, and gold were very fast and recoveries of these three metals were approximately 90 per cent after 2 hours and 100 per cent, 97.4 per cent, and 99.9 per cent respectively after 72 hours. The parameters that influence the extraction of PGMs and Au were examined to assess their relative importance during the adsorption process in order to provide the basis for process optimization. The concentration of thiocyanate was not identified as significant factor for PGMs adsorption, while nickel concentration was the most significant extraction process parameter. Base metal cyanide complexes adsorb and compete with the PGM complexes for sites on activated carbon, and while copper adsorption can be minimized by adjusting the residence time, nickel adsorbs at approximately the same rate as that of the PGMs, influencing the loading capacity and adsorption kinetics of the PGMs. The feasibility of eluting platinum and palladium cyanide complexes from activated carbon using an analogue of the AARL process was investigated. Platinum and palladium elute from activated carbon almost to completion in 4 to 5 bed volumes at 80°C, while the elution of gold at this temperature is slow, with a significant amount of gold still to be eluted after 16 bed volumes. Cyanide pre-treatment was found to have a significant influence on PGM elution. Higher cyanide concentration in the pre-treatment step results in more efficient elution up to a point, and experiments suggest the possibility of an optimum cyanide concentration, beyond which elution efficiency starts decreasing.

Unstable rock failure or rock bursting is one of the most dangerous problems in deep hard rock mines. This type of failure, that occurs uncontrollably, is associated with a significant release of strain energy from the surrounding rock. In this study, the numerical simulation of unstable rock failure was carried out using the three-dimensional explicit Lagranian finite-volume finite difference method to identify the onset and location of unstable failure events in the model. On this basis, a numerical simulation of mine pillars with width-to-height ratios of 0.5, 2 and 3 was performed. A criterion was developed, based on the calculation of the elastic strain energy, to determine the prone areas for the initiation of rockburst in the models. The results of this study showed that, in softer loading systems, due to large amounts of stored elastic strain energy, an unstable equilibrium is established, which leads to the rapid transfer of strain energy to the rock in the form of violent failure. It was also found that the unstable failure starts at the corners and free surface of the model. The new criterion developed in this study may help predict the occurrence of rockbursts in slender pillars and the design of pillars to control human and financial losses caused by this phenomenon.

Keywords: Kyoto Protocol, carbon credits, global warming, energy, auditing Climate change is nowadays being taken increasingly seriously, and the link between global warming and the carbon dioxide released in the generation of energy is coming under increasing scrutiny. The Kyoto Protocol was signed in 1997, after five years of negotiation. So far, about 84 countries have ratified this agreement, under which terms developed countries have strict targets linked to their 1990 level of emissions. However, ?greenhouse gas? (such as carbon dioxide) emissions continue to rise alarmingly. According to the World Resources Institute, greenhouse gas emissions in the USA increased 13% from 1990-2002, while Australia recorded a 22% increase. In contrast, the European Union, a Kyoto signatory, has seen a small decline in its emissions during the same period. This is led by the UK and Germany, who reduced their emissions by 15% and 19% respectively. The concept of ?carbon credits? provides a funding mechanism for companies in the developed world to compensate for some of their CO2 emissions by paying companies (trading credits) elsewhere in the world to undertake projects to bring about reductions in emissions. In the southern African mining industry, it will be possible to get refunded for undertaking voluntary emission-reduction projects. Concern about the environment is creating business opportunities. A preliminary calculation has shown that various projects in South Africa (those in the pipeline, with quite a high likelihood of coming off) could earn a combined total of about R2.5-billion, under the initial phase of the Kyoto Protocol's carbon-credit scheme, which allows developed-country companies to trade credits with developing countries. A number of local companies are planning projects that could comply with the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), in which they will implement techniques to achieve certified emission reductions (CERs) of greenhouse gases. In order to prevent abuse of such a system involving vast sums of money, vigorous audits need to be carried out. A company has to prove it has made real changes and is not simply conducting business as usual under a cloak of claimed environmental improvements. PricewaterhouseCoopers has applied to become one of only a few international agencies that will be accredited to conduct validation and verification of the credits, by auditing what is called the ?designated operational entity?. An independent validator needs to confirm that the project meets the strict requirements of the Kyoto Protocol. The company has to demonstrate that it?s not business as usual. So, if you refurbished every five years, the next refurbishment is not a good CDM project, unless you can demonstrate that you will do something beyond the maintenance - that is what can be registered. So, Kyoto intends to get additional projects going, and the money for that is actually quite good - prices of 14 euros per ton of carbon dioxide not emitted have been seen. The price depends on who takes the risk for non-delivery if a project doesn?t deliver the emission reductions on time. The highly energy-intensive South African mining industry is heavily dependent on coal. There should be many opportunities for the pyrometallurgical industry to come up with creative ideas to reduce emissions, and there is now an additional financial incentive to encourage this. Companies can actually get money in return for doing these types of projects, in addition to the contribution to corporate social responsibility.

The mining industry remains heavily reliant on mineworkers, whose working conditions are typically more arduous than in most industries. With recent technological developments in mining and other industries focusing on the digitalisation of workspaces, mineworker safety should be at the forefront of the digital transformation. Underground mines should be viewed – and developed – as human cyber-physical systems, where digital technologies are integrated with human roles to enhance safety and coordination. Contributing to this vision, this paper presents a set of functional requirements to guide the development of human cyber-physical systems that improve the safety of mineworkers in underground mines. The formulation of the functional requirements is informed by an analysis of the current context of underground mines and an exploration of opportunities for improved human-system integration within such environments. The functional requirements are related to the real underground mining context through an illustrative example, which demonstrates how a human cyber-physical system could monitor mineworker and environment states, perform predictive safety analyses, and coordinate operations. The proposed functional requirements serve as a starting point for the development of human cyber-physical systems within complex underground mining environments; however, further research (supported by real case studies) is required to refine and obtain specific target values for the functional requirements, and to formulate accompanying performance requirements.

Effective communication is a sought-after non-technical skill in the health, safety, and environmental (HSE) function and is fundamental in achieving an organization’s safety objectives. While different channels are used to communicate HSE matters, many organizations employ posters, videos, and/ or signs containing images to convey information. Communication through signage and graphical hazard symbols has been regulated in standards, but vast sections of HSE communication are bespoke communications and exist outside the sphere of standards. Effective HSE communication through images requires an understanding of the organizational culture in which the images will be used, as well as an understanding of the semiotics of the images themselves. Creative interpretation within HSE communication can create situations where the message that was received is not the message that was intended, leading to confusion and misinterpretation. This paper is aimed at elucidating the semiotics of South African HSE visual content. It was found that the indexical mode of images was most preferred in visual communication, and text-only designs the least preferred. Senders and receivers of messages differ in their opinions on the complexity of HSE communication.

In 2015, after amendments to the explosives regulations, stemming became a mandatory activity for all South African mining operations. There are, however, circumstances in which it is thought stemming has an adverse impact on the blasting outcome. Some of these circumstances include blasting in hot holes, in reactive ground, or when blasting a pre-split. In order to determine when stemming is necessary, its role in the control of adverse blasting phenomena and impact on explosive performance were reviewed. Stemming was found to play a significant role in the fragmentation process and burden movement. Additionally, stemming significantly influences the control of flyrock, air-blast, and toxic fume generation. The review of the literature indicates some motivation for not using stemming for presplit, trim, hot hole, and reactive ground blasting, provided the benefits associated with not stemming the holes outweigh the risks of stemming them. Best practice for stemming from the literature indicates a stemming length of 0.7 × burden is best for larger hole diameters, and 20 to 30 × Ø for smaller hole diameters. Crushed aggregate appears to be the most effective stemming material. The South African explosives regulations pertaining to stemming were found to be consistent with those of Australia and the USA.

Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) plays a fundamental role in the national and local economies of resource-rich countries in Africa. As such, more effort must be geared towards fostering this type of economic activity to sustain livelihoods in rural communities. Across Africa, efforts to operationalize ASM based on a sustainable development framework have been quite tedious and often ineffective. This is because most of these frameworks lacked context and an understanding of the continuum from the artisanal through small-scale and up to the junior miner, grouped under the general term ?ASM?. Driven by the need to contextualize some of the definitional issues in this niche sector, and gain a clearer understanding of their peculiar challenges, this paper aims to contribute to the debate on ASM by considering two of Africa?s resource-rich countries ? Ghana and South Africa. Since South Africa has made greater inroads in protecting the interests of small-scale miners, we thus draw comparisons from both countries? approach to ASM, outline the lessons learnt, and provide recommendations regarding the ways forward.

Richter magnitudes for seismic events were calibrated for use as a Local magnitude scale in the West Rand (WR), Far West Rand (FWR), and Klerksdorp–Orkney–Stilfontein–Hartebeesfontein (KOSH) gold mining areas. Richter magnitudes are currently calculated from seismograms recorded by local surface cluster networks using tabulated calibration values for Southern California, published in 1958. The Richter (1958) model is incorrect for distances of less than 30 km and should be applied only to crustal earthquakes in regions with similar attenuation properties to those of Southern California. When compared to the South African National Seismograph Network (SANSN), the cluster networks, on average, overestimate seismic event magnitudes by approximately 0.1 of a magnitude unit. A calibrated Local magnitude scale was derived by means of a multiple regression analysis between the Local magnitudes reported by the SANSN and the largest zero-to-peak trace amplitudes measured on the cluster network horizontal seismograms, after modelling the attenuation of the seismic waves as these progress from the epicentre to the station position. Magnitudes reported by individual stations for the same event show a significant scatter around the average magnitude owing to the near-surface amplifications of the seismic waves at the recordings sites. Average magnitude should be estimated using as many magnitudes of individual stations as possible to ensure an accurate estimate. Larger event magnitudes should be compared with those recorded by the SANSN.

Internal stability is a key consideration in the design and long-term performance of granular filters, as it precludes particle migration and internal erosion. This study evaluates the internal stability of coal discard material in coal co-disposal facilities. Reusing coal discards could reduce mine waste volumes and mitigate associated environmental impacts. However, coal discard material differs from most soils in terms of particle strength and density, with possible implications for hydraulic stability. Laboratory seepage tests were conducted on coal discard material under varying void ratios, subjected to a range of hydraulic gradients, and the results were used to confirm the applicability of the widely used empirical Kenney and Lau filter criterion to coal discard. Findings revealed that particle loss increased with higher void ratios. Nonetheless, particle migration remained minimal, with a maximum particle loss of only 0.2%, suggesting that coal discard exhibits sound internal stability under the tested conditions.

"In the ten years from 2003 to 2013 global mine production of copper has increased by over 23% to meet demand while the weighted average head grade has dropped from 0.9 to 0.7% Cu. These divergent trends of increasing demand and declining economic grades will extend the life of many existing mines and improve the viability of marginal and/or complex copper deposits. Against that context this paper outlines hydrometallurgical copper sulphide leaching options as alternatives to the more conventional pyrometallurgical processing route of copper sulphides. Three copper sulphide leaching and refining processes are discussed: total pressure oxidation, ferric sulphate leaching and copper chloride leaching. The effect of mineralogy on the choice of processing technology is discussed as well as some of the unit processes used. Additionally, possible benefits that a hydrometallurgical process may offer over an existing pyrometallurgical route are discussed. Subsequently, two very important aspects to the development of projects involving the leaching of copper sulphides are discussed. Finally, a number of conclusions are presented that will be useful to keep in mind when considering projects involving the leaching of copper sulphides. The density, porosity, and strength of rocks are fundamental in the design of geo-engineering projects. Determining these properties requires the preparation of smooth core samples, which is usually impossible for soft rocks. Besides, only fragmented samples may be available in some projects. A method for predicting rock properties from rock particles such as drilling debris would therefore be useful. This study was undertaken to develop prediction equations for compressive strength (UCS), tensile strength (BTS), density, and porosity values from the crushability index (CI) obtained from rock fragments. The results showed that UCS, BTS, density, and porosity were strongly correlated with the CI. The physical characteristics and strength of rocks may be predicted with the help of the derived equations. The CI test is a valuable tool for estimating rock properties in drilling projects and in situations where core specimens are not available.

The use of stemming plugs in surface blasting is gaining popularity because of the environmental, technical, and economic advantages. Although previous studies have established the operational effectiveness of different types of stemming plugs, evaluations of the economic and ergonomic impacts are lacking, thereby hindering their application in many mining operations. Consequently, a significant proportion of mining operations end up performing less efficient blasts. We evaluated the effectiveness of three types of stemming plugs by conducting multiple full-scale production blasts. The results show that stemming plugs reduce the need for secondary blasting and increase blast performance. An economicanalysis showed that the incorporation of stemming plugs can reduce blasting costs significantly.

Visit to the Datsun Nissan Company's body pressing and assembly plant at Rosslyn, Pretoria, and the Claremont-Danville Tunnel on 27th February, 1970. The excursion arranged for the 27th February to the Datsun Nissan motor car assembly plant at Rosslyn, near Pretoria, in the morning and the Claremont-Danville tunnel in the afternoon was well supported by some 43 members. The visitors were met at the factory by Mr Rademeyer, the Industrial Relations Manager, and members of his staff and were taken to the artisan training centre for light refreshments. There is a well-equipped training section with an air-conditioned lecture hall; we were told that such training facilities were important because of the cosmopolitan nature of the artisan staff. The visitors were divided into small parties and taken to the tool die and jig-making section, which is perhaps the key department for a factory of this nature. There the many dies for the presses in the body pressing section, as well as the complicated jigs for body welding are made. The technique for making the castings for the dies is interesting. A polystyrene model of the casting is embedded in moulding sand. In a neighbouring foundry molten metal is pressed into the headers and burns away the polystyrene, which leaves no residue, and this exactly fills the space occupied by the model. This rough casting is then machined in large copying machines (costing as much as Rl80 000). An exact plastic model of the surface of the pressing required, set up in juxtaposition to this casting is traversed by a master stylus which operates the slave milling cutter, thereby machining the surface to close tolerances. The machined casting is cleaned up by hand and finally finished in large spotting machines, using a blue dye to show up high spots, to the fine degree of accuracy required. The body pressing section was next visited. There the large number of pressed parts which make up a vehicle body are pressed out of special deep drawing steel plate. Some of the largest presses were capable of applying a pressure of 1 200 tons and cost as much as Rl85 000 each. The visitors then followed through to the assembly section where jigs are used to hold together the many pressings, which are then spot welded into body frames. The frames go to an assembly line where they are finished to the stage for painting. The continuous crawl painting assembly line carries the frames through all the stages of prime coating with zinc phosphate sprayed on in a tunnel, followed by immersion of the lower parts in a priming bath, then drying and spray painting and baking in tunnels. The body frames, after painting, join another assembly line, where the doors, upholstery and many fittings are attached. After this stage the completed bodies are lowered onto and attached to the chassis units which are largely assembled from imported parts (engines, transmission units, etc.). From the end of the line the completed cars are driven off to the trial track and then pass through a tunnel with powerful water sprays to detect leaks in the body work. The proportion of locally made parts is just on 45 per cent. An interesting aspect of the assembly organization is that, of the 140 or 160 cars completed each day there may be included some of each of the Datsun model as well as some Renault and Alfa Romeo models models which are assembled by this company. The change from one model to another several times a day does not present any difficulty to the organization. Each section of the assembly plant 'buys' the units from the preceeding section and 'sells' to the succeeding section. This means that the responsibility of each section ends when the unit is sold to the next section. The cost of repairing any faults found subsequently is charged to the section where it is found, which puts a powerful emphasis on meticulous inspections between sections to safeguard their costs. After the tour the parties assembled at the lecture hall where a lavish cold buffet luncheon was provided by the company. After luncheon Mr A. R. C. Fowler, on behalf of the Institute, thanked the Managing Director, Mr W. J. Wilson and his staff for this most interesting and well organized visit. The party then left for the Claremont-Danville tunnel. The tunnel is being driven by General Mining Federale Kontrakteurs through the Daspoort Range, Pretoria, to link the suburbs of Danville, near Iscor, and Claremont, which at present can only be reached by a nine mile detour. The FUTURE project aims to enhance seismic surveying in South African mining by integrating advanced acquisition technologies. In this paper, we detail surface and underground seismic surveys at the South Deep gold mine as part of the project. Surface seismic acquisition used co-located broadband micro-electromechanical sensors, one and three component recorders connected to geophones, distributed acoustic sensing using a straight fibre optic cable, along with a 6 ton broadband seismic vibrator operating with 4–180 Hz linear sweeps. In addition, underground surveys employed a combination of straight, and helically wound fibre optic cables, cabled-based and nodal sensors, along with a 500 kg drophammer mounted on a skid steer bobcat. The surface and underground seismic arrays were time synchronised using a GPS-time transmitter to allow for accurate seismic data recording in a GPS-denied environment. Results show the efficacy of these techniques in acquiring high-resolution seismic data, revealing detailed subsurface geological structures and mineralisation down to 3500 m below ground surface. Surface data revealed clear seismic reflections corresponding to the Black Reef and Ventersdorp Contact Reef. An underground P-wave velocity model exhibits low velocity anomalies that are associated with fracturing, while a P-wave reflection stack section shows significant reflections and a degree of faulting below the tunnel floor that was not observed on the surface reflection seismic data. We highlight the potential of these technologies to enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainability in mining. This study sets a benchmark for future reflection seismic surveys, paving the way for safer, more efficient, deep mineral exploration and extraction practices.
