The Bureau of Mines studied two Pennsylvania anthracites using low-temperature carbon dioxide adsorption. A modified form of the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller equation was used to calculate specific surface areas. Two mesh sizes of each anthracite were used to determine how gamma irradiation at 106 and 108 rads, both in vacuum and in the presence of air, affected the carbon dioxide surface areas. Results show that anthracites have a system of pores that are essentially all interconnected rather than isolated; that anthracites differ from one another in specific surface, which may correlate with density; and that irradiation in vacuum has no discernible effect on specific surface of anthracite, but irradiation in air does produce changes in specific surface.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of field tests to improve the understanding of the support interaction mechanics between fully grouted bolts and coal mine roofs and to help lay the foundation for improved design and evaluation techniques. Strain gauges were installed on 14 fully grouted bolts placed in shale roof rock at four mines in Colorado, Illinois, and Pennsylvania to determine how load was transferred between the bolts and the rock. The results of field tests on elastic bolt behavior compared well with previous laboratory work and numerical models. The field tests showed that the anchorage length of grouted bolts installed in shale was slightly longer than the anchorage length determined in laboratory tests conducted in concrete blocks. The field results produced more variability because of geological variations. Tests run past the yield point of the steel bolt indicate that the yield zone varies significantly and translates down the length of the bolt anywhere from 4 to 22 in.

A compressor and utility station, which is believed to be one of the largest mobile units of this type ever constructed, was placed in operation at the Bureau of Mines experimental oil-shale mine near Rifle, Colo., during. 1949. This mobile unit mounts two 770-cubic-feet-per-minute air compressors, a 2,500-gallon water tank, and a 200-cubic-foot air receiver. The mobile base of the unit is a 30-ton trailer 30-feet long and 12-feet wide. Prior to the construction of this unit, compressed air was supplied to underground workings through pipe lines connecting with a stationary compressor plant on the surface. The power consumed in supplying compressed air to underground drilling crews was 0.531 kw.-hr. per ton of shale broken. Use of the mobile unit has cut this figure to 0.421 kw.-hr. per ton of shale broken and, more important, has eliminated the cost of installing and maintaining underground air and water lines.

"A gratifying decrease is noticeable in the number of men killed in the coal minas of the United States during the past six months as compared to the quantity of coal produced.During July last year, when 221 men lost their lives, the production of coal was over 50 million tons. In January, 1920, the production had increased to 56 million tons, or 11 per cent, while the fatalities, instead of increasing proportionately, actually decreased to 166, or nearly 15 per cent. Nor is this decrease a mere accident or coincidence peculiar to the month of January, as may be seen from the following table.From the figures shown above it may be observed that the average monthly production for January and the five months immediately preceding, was 49,500,000, or only 2 per cent below that for July, while the average number of men killed was 183, or a decrease of over 17 per cent."

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute, and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. This paper is a continuation of a series made in cooperation with the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC), Inc. The first of this series of reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36, and succeeding reports described motor gasolines sold during the summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941. The method described may be used to delineate irregularities, inclusions, porosity, or shrink holes in ingots up to 43 inches in length. Rou¬tine testing does not require technical personnel, and the equipment is easily maintained. INTRODUCTION For a number of years, the Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines, Albany, Oreg., under contract with the Atomic Energy Commission and the Naval Reactors Division of the Bureau of Ships, has studied the production of zirconium and has adopted the Kroll magnesium-reduction process3/ as the, most economical means of producing high-purity zirconium sponge in quantities commensurate with demand. Consumable-electrode arc melting4/ provides a practical means of melting the sponge without increasing the impurity content. The ultimate application for which the metal is intended requires that strict specifications be met to insure workability and maintain the nuclear properties and corrosion resistance. The control measures employed to satisfy these specifications include chemical, spectrographic, and metallographic analyses, mechanical and corrosion tests, and ultrasonic inspection of the finished ingot. The primary purpose of ultrasonic inspection is to augment the other control measures by checking the soundness of each ingot leaving the laboratory. An incidental but important function has been the revelation of information leading to better understanding of the arc-melting process. For example, information obtained through ultrasonic inspection relative to the occurrence and distribution of porosity in ingots has resulted in a. modification of melting practices that minimizes the occurrence.

The mine of the Eureka Standard Consolidated dining Co. is at Dividend, Utah, in the Tintic mining district. It is operated under the same management and controlled by the Antic Standard Mining Co.; the two properties adjoin each other. The Eureka Standard is worked through a vertical shaft; the ore is mined by a stringer-set-and-fill method. One hundred and thirty men were employed in April 1933. The normal daily tonnage is 100 tons; the ore is shipped to the smelter at Garfield, Utah.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a rapid, accurate method of analysis for small amounts of calcium in wolframite concentrates. This analysis is necessary to determine if the wolframite concentrates meet United States National Stockpile Specification P-57R2, which limits the calcium content to 0.2 percent. Because of the small depth of the sample analyzed in fluorescent X-ray spectrography, the calcium Kaline intensity was a function of the chemical composition of the calcium-bearing particle as well as the total matrix composition. This particle-composition effect was particularly important in this analysis, as the calcium may be present as a carbonate, tungstate, phosphate, etc. Three methods of preparing the sample eliminated the variation of calcium Ka intensity with mineralogical occurrence: (1) Reduction in particle size by extensive grinding, (2) chemical fusion with sodium carbonate, and (3) solution of the calcium by an acid attack.

[The purpose of this report is to present results of tests on the effectiveness of a spray of water mist, commonly called compressed-air water blast or water blast, in reducing the concentration of dust present in the air shortly after blasting and during mucking of the blasted material. Many observations have been male on the effectiveness of such ,sprays, but published quantitative information on comparative dust concentrations with and without their use, obtained by dust-sampling methods in use in this country, is rare if not absent. Tests conducted. in South Africa about 19164/ and more recently in England5/,6/ have shown that such sprays reduce the dust concentration to very low values within a fen minutes after blasting.]

The Bureau of Mines devised a new machine-test method for measuring carbon dioxide inspired by a wearer of self-contained breathing apparatus. The new method compares favorably in speed and precision with standard man-tests in which the apparatus is tested while actually worn, and is scheduled for use in future approval tests for facepiece carbon dioxide 'measurements. However, man-tests will still be used to measure the efficiency of the carbon dioxide sorbent materials in closed-circuit breathing apparatus.

"The major thrust of this research is directed towards a better undstanding of the behavior of airborne dust particles in underground mine airways. Figure 61 shows a schematic of dust flow in mine airway. The work included development of a mathematical model of dust behavior in mine airways, experimental study of the behavior of dust clouds and comparison of computer model output and experimental results. Re-entraiment is a secondary source of dust in mine airways and factors affecting re-entrainment are being identified.Investigations have encompassed both experimental and theoretical research into the behavior of dust in mine airways. Experiments were performed in mine airways under both controlled and normal operating conditions (Figure 62). The controlled experiments included the documentation of the concentration and desposition patterns for two types of dust under three different velocities. Real-time dust concentration data were obtained using real-time aerosol monitors (RAM-1) (Figure 63).On the theoretical front, a convection-diffusion model of the dust flow phenomenon in mine airways was developed considering dominant mechanisms affecting dust transport and deposition in mine airways. Mechanisms modeled include turbulent and gravitational deposition, coagulation, and dispersion. Comparative analyses of results of the controlled experiments with the predictions of the mathematical model were carried out. In addition to the overall validity, the adequacy of the individual components of the model, such as deposition in the total and respirable range, and dispersion were examined in light of the experimental observations."

The Bureau of Mines investigated two methods for recovering potash from carnallite ore in continuous 100-lb/h flotation units. In the insoluble-slimes flotation procedure, insoluble slimes were removed by flotation prior to potash flotation. In the direct flotation method, insoluble slimes were depressed and the potash floated directly without prior removal of the insoluble slimes. Seventy-three percent of the potash in the ore was recovered in a leached final KCl product contain-ing 59.1 pet K20 using the insoluble-slimes flotation method. The direct flotation method recovered 74.5 pct of the potash in a final product containing 60.2 pet K20. The rate of return on the investment was calculated at 13 pct for the insoluble-slimes flotation method and 15 pct for the direct flotation method, based on a Bureau economic evaluation.

Results of studies by the Federal Bureau of Mines on a pilot-plant scale for removing hydrogen sulfide and carbonyl sulfide from gas mixtures by the hot carbonate system are given in this publication. Gases containing up to 10 pet. hydrogen sulfide and 48 grains carbonyl sulfide per 100 cu.ft. were treated. In most tests carbon dioxide also was present and was removed simultaneously with the sulfur compounds. Because the rate of absorption of hydrogen sulfide is much more rapid than that of carbon dioxide over a wide temperature range, selective removal of hydrogen sulfide occurred in the bottom section of the absorber near the point of gas entry. Hydrogen sulfide was removed to pipeline specifications with carbonate solutions by using split-stream flows in the absorber and regenerator.

This report (Safety File Guidance 6.0) is the eighth in a nine-part series of recommendations and guidance addressing the functional safety of processor-controlled mining equipment. It is part of a risk-based system safety process encompassing hardware, software, humans, and the operating environment for the equipment’s life cycle. Figure 1 shows a safety framework containing these recommendations. The reports in this series address the various life cycle stages of inception, design, approval and certification, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning. These recommendations were developed as a joint project between the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Mine Safety and Health Administration. They are intended for use by mining companies, original equipment manufacturers, and aftermarket suppliers to these mining companies. Users of these reports are expected to consider the set in total during the design cycle. • 1.0 Safety Introduction (Part 1).—This is an introductory report for the general mining industry. It provides basic system/software safety concepts, discusses the need for mining to address the functional safety of programmable electronics (PE), and includes the benefits of implementing a system/software safety program. • 2.1 System Safety (Part 2) and 2.2 Software Safety (Part 3).—These reports draw heavily from International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard IEC 61508 [IEC 1998a,b,c,d,e,f,g]and other standards. The scope is “surface and underground safety-related mining systems employing embedded, networked, and nonnetworked programmable electronics.” System safety seeks to design safety into all phases of the entire system. Software is a subsystem; thus, software safety is a part of the system’s safety. • 3.0 Safety File (Part 4).—This report contains the documentation that demonstrates the level of safety built into the system and identifies limitations for the system’s use and operation. In essence, it is a “proof of safety” that the system and its operation meet the appropriate level of safety for the intended application. It starts from the beginning of the design, is maintained during the full life cycle of the system, and provides administrative support for the safety program of the full system. • 4.0 Safety Assessment (Part 5).—The independent assessment of the safety file is addressed. It establishes consistent methods to determine the completeness and suitability of safety evidence and justifications. This assessment could be conducted by an independent third party. • Safety Framework Guidance.—It is intended to supplement the safety framework reports with guidance providing users with additional information. The purpose is to assist users in applying the concepts presented. In other words, the safety framework is what needs to be done and the guidance is how it can be done. The guidance information reinforces the concepts, describes various methodologies that can be used, and gives examples and references. It also gives information on the benefits and drawbacks of various methodologies. The guidance reports are not intended to promote a single methodology or to be an exhaustive treatment of the subject material. They provide information and references so that the user can more intelligently choose and implement the appropriate methodologies given the user’s application and capabilities. Despite the use of warning alarms to alert miners to the backward movement of large mining equipment, miners still are injured too frequently in backup accidents. Currently approved backup alarm technology consists of continuous sounding alarm systems. New technology has developed a warning system that initiates an alarm only if there is an object close behind the vehicle. This advancement eliminates constant exposure to the alarm because a warning is given only in case of a potential collision. Adoption of this development can improve safety and reduce damage, especially for front-end loaders (FEL&apos;s). It will also eliminate a source of nuisance noise in urban and residential areas. This Bureau of Mines report describes the general characteristics of infrared (IR) light, ultrasonic wave, and Doppler radar technology as used for backup alarms, and reviews the testing of the most promising detection devices.

Pillar design is the first line of defense against rock falls—the greatest single safety hazard faced by underground coal miners in the United States and abroad. To help advance the state of the art in this fundamental mining science, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health organized the Second International Workshop on Coal Pillar Mechanics and Design. The workshop was held in Vail, CO, on June 6,1999, in association with the 37th U.S. Rock Mechanics Symposium. The proceedings include 15 papers from leading ground control specialists in the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the Republic of South Africa. The papers address the entire range of issues associated with coal pillars and have a decidedly practical flavor. Topics include numerical modeling, empirical design formulas based on case histories, field measurements, and post failure mechanics.

This Bureau of Mines report examines the percentage depletion allowance rate structure in relation to several criteria that are indicative of U.S. mineral import dependence. These criteria are the minerals considered as strategic and critical for stockpiling purposes, the ratio of reserves to forecast cumulative demand (1976-2000) for selected minerals, and the U.S. net import reliance as a percentage of apparent consumption (1978), also for selected minerals in general, it was Found that there does exist a direct, although not perfect, relationship between the percentage depletion allowance rates and the degree of import dependence as indicated by these three criteria. The higher percentage rates tend to he associated with those minerals for which the United States is, or will likely he, heavily dependent on foreign sources. In addition, a basic discussion of the mineral depletion allowance is provided, including numerical examples illustrating the computation of the allowance under several assumptions. Also, the percentage depletion allowance rates for individual minerals are tabulated.

The Bureau of Mines conducted tests designed to compare its breathing metabolic simulator (BMS) with other methods that are currently used to evaluate the performance of respiratory protective equipment. The BMS is a commercially developed device that uses a piston cylinder to simulate breath movement. Using a propane furnace that consumes oxygen and forms CO2, the BMS also simulates the respiratory metabolism of humans. The breathing and metabolic subsystems of the BMS are described in detail in this report. Results are compared from tests that used the BMS to evaluate respiratory equipment and from tests that used human subjects for the same purpose. The BMS was also tested against a pulsatile breathing machine (PBM) previously designed by the Bureau. Both machines were used to test respiratory equipment, and the test results are compared in this report. To illustrate typical applications of the BMS, the report briefly describes how the BMS was used to test two different types of closed-circuit respiratory apparatus, and the test results are presented. This research showed that BMS test results compared more closely to the results of tests that used human subjects than did results obtained using the PBM.

This bulletin deals with the characteristic features of the principal explosives used in mining and engineering operations, and espe- cially with the tests that show the suitability of different classes of explosives for different kinds of work. The Bureau of Mines pub- lishes the report as one of a series dealing with tests of explosives and methods of reducing the risks involved in the use of explosives in mining operations. The application of explosives to engineering and mining opera- tions has increased rapidly in recent years. According to a pre- liminary report issued by the Bureau of the Census, 469,000,000 pounds of explosives was manufactured in this country during the year 1909, and the greater part of this production was used for industrial purposes. In large engineering projects and in mining operations requiring the use of explosives the selection of a suitable explosive from the many varieties offered for sale is of fundamental importance. Vari- ous considerations are involved in the selection of an explosive of proper class for the blasting to be done. Many explosives suitable for quarry work are unsuitable for use in deep mines or in close workings. In metal mining and in driving tunnels the character of the gases evolved by the explosive on detonation is an important consideration. An explosive for use in gaseous or dusty coal mines must be formulated and compounded so that its flame temperature and the height and duration of its flame are reduced enough to per- mit its being used with comparative safety. In wet workings or in submarine blasting explosives impervious to moisture are requisite. In extremely cold climates explosives that do not require thawing are desirable, provided they are equally good in other respects. An essential requirement of all explosives, especially of those for use in tropical countries, is that they shall remain stable without change in chemical or physical characteristics.
