This case history discusses a pre-split test conducted at BHP Mineralss Navajo Mine in Fruitland, New Mexico. The test was an extension of earlier pre-split testing conducted by Virgil Stachura of the U.S. Bureau of Mines in conjunction with Navajo Mine and WESCO Inc. which tested low-density product in 10.625 diameter holes.

This paper is a brief summary of work done on mining applications of high energy projectiles. Full scale field testing already completed has used cannons to drive a tunnel, drill large diameter holes, do secondary breakage in an open pit mine, and scale loose rock from inaccessible pit walls. Other applications are suggested in driving development openings, particularly raises. The method will be economically feasible only if cheap liquid propellants are developed.

At a North Carolina feldspar surface mine, the orebody contains intrusions of waste material occurring at various angles from horizontal to dipping, and varying considerably in thickness. A cooperative effort between a blasting vibration consultant, a blasting contractor, and personnel from the City of Las Vegas has dramatically reduced complaints from residential areas near developmental blasting projects. The principal methods used involved the preparation of an informative video recording which presents various aspects of the blasting operations, the design of a distinctive flyer which is attached to residential doors, and pre-blast meetings for information dissemination.

Apogee Coal Company, DBA Arch of West Virginia, faced the challenge of drilling and blasting over one million cubic yards of high temperature overburden at its Ruffner surface operation near Logan, West Virginia. The overburden was removed above the Upper Five Block seam that was previously deep mined, abandoned, and later engulfed by fire. Borehole temperatures were measured above 700° F.

As the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and state regulators increase the stringency and enforcement of regulations concerning emissions produced by open-air detonation of energetic materials, research must provide the means of obtaining emissions data. The BangBox emissions testing program established the technical foundations for emissions characterization which have been accepted by the USEPA and other regulatory agencies; the technical issues remaining are nettlesome and require new approaches in test procedures.

For proper blast design, one must make the assumption that all blastholes release nearly ideal energy. In many types of blasting operations, blastholes release very little useful energy. These blastholes are called malfunctioning blastholes. Recent studies indicate that as many as 30 percent of all blastholes are malfunctioning. These malfunctioning blastholes are not an unusual occurrence.

Open pit blasting in India uses two types of explosives. First there are bulk explosives for wet and dry holes, and there are packaged explosives. The Indian open pit coal mining is projected to use 190 thousand metric tons of explosives in 1995. This volume is projected to grow for the next ten years, whereas the underground coal mining will hold fairly constant.
