"The Commonwealth of Virginia is restoring and expanding its Capitol of great historic significance. Designed by Thomas Jefferson in 1785, it is the second oldest Capitol building in the United States. The building expansion required excavations immediately adjacent to its South Portico. The building, which rests on shallow brick footings, is very sensitive to any disturbance caused by construction and excavation. A comprehensive and secure plan of operations was devised by the design team to ensure that this national monument remains unharmed by the new construction. Various construction techniques were implemented to satisfy the strict movement goal of 0.25 inch and distortion of U2000. They consisted of jet grout columns to stabilize the upper soils, compensation grouting for future foundation leveling, a tied-back reinforced concrete diaphragm wall for excavation retention and foundations, and realtime instrumentation for monitoring. This paper describes the design approach for the retention system, providing information on the various construction phases and techn iques, and reports on the movements recorded by the real-time monitoring system during the course of the project. At the time of this manuscript preparation, and the deep excavation complete to final grade, the results indicate that the extremely restrictive building movement criteria have been met. The success can be credited to detailed design, close cooperation among the project team, prudent construction methods, and real-time monitoring. INTRODUCTIONThe Commonwealth of Virginia is undertaking a comprehensive renovation and expansion of the Virginia Capitol building located in Richmond, Virginia. The Capitol building was designed by Thomas Jefferson in 1785, with construction of the original building starting the same year. The Capitol building was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966.A part of the comprehensive renovation and expansion of the Capitol is a 25,000-square foot, two-level subterranean extension on the south side of the Capitol building, which will serve as a new Visitor Center and public entrance for the Capitol. Deep excavations were required for the construction of the new Visitor Center. The excavation required a permanent retention system to accommodate an approximately 40- foot deep excavation."

With the rapid expansion of urban transportation systems, tunnels and cut & cover structures are considered as the only solution in improving the urban space congestion problem in mass rapid transit system. Therefore, it is necessary to accurately design underground structures with realistic assumptions and considerations of design parameters like site geotechnical data, water table, surcharge load etc. Over conservative approach provides not only uneconomical design but sometimes it also causes overdesign of the concerned structures. Water table depth has a significant role in some design aspects of underground structures like floatation check, lateral and uplift pressure on the buried structure, etc. In current practice of tunnel and cut & cover structure design, water table is assumed to coincide with the ground level. Most of the Design Basis Reports & Outline Design Specifications directly mention consideration of water table at ground level for floatation check and load calculations, etc. However, the actual scenario is different in most of the cities specially in northern, central, western and eastern regions of India except the coastal cities. In the present study an attempt has been made to carry out a parametric study on the effect of water table depth in the design of a typical 6.3m outer diameter circular tunnel with 6m backfill. In this study, it is also attempted to establish an analytical method of calculating the most realistic consideration of water table depth instead of the present hypothetical assumption of considering water table to coincide with the ground level. The findings of the current study may be helpful to the researchers and practising engineers in design of tunnel and cut & cover structure for subways and metros.

Shaft Construction Using Diaphragm and Cement Bentonite Walls at Shoreline Storage Tunnel Eric Brichler, Senior Estimator, Major Projects eric.brichler@nicholsonconstruction.com Nicholson Construction Company, Denver, Colorado The Shoreline Storage Tunnel (SST) Project in Cleveland, Ohio is part of EPA-mandated Project Clean Lake, Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District’s program designed to reduce pollution in Lake Erie by 4 billion gallons per year over the next 25 years.  The $3-billion program includes construction of large ‑diameter storage/conveyance tunnels, shafts at key combined sewer overflow (CSO) pick-up points, underground pump stations, improvements to wastewater treatment plant capacity and treatment, and expansion of green infrastructure.  When completed, SST will comprise over 2.5 miles of 23-ft-diameter tunnel installed 87 to 135 ft below ground.  The storage tunnel will manage higher flow volumes and keep stormwater out of the combined sewer system to reduce overflow occurrences.  As part of the project, three deep shafts (SST-1, SST-2, and SST-3) were constructed to provide access to the tunnel, launch and retrieve the tunnel boring machine, and provide ventilation.  Several additional structures will serve as diversion structures, drop manholes, gate structures or gate control structures.  A short connection tunnel will connect the SST to the Dugway Storage Tunnel, which was completed earlier in the Project Clean Lake program. The shaft support of excavation system was designed using diaphragm wall methods.  This innovative solution provided watertight, continuous shafts keyed into rock that significantly reduces risks as compared to traditional secant piles combined with a rib and liner plate system.  Unreinforced concrete diaphragm walls were constructed using mechanical clamshells for shafts SST-2 and SST-3, and clamshell equipment and a hydromill were used for SST-1.  All the SST shafts were lined with reinforced cast-in-place concrete and include baffle drop structures. Outside of the SST-1 and SST-3 shafts, several ground improvement blocks were installed using overlapping cement bentonite panels. These ground improvement zones were created to provide increased strength and water cutoff in the soil at locations where the TBM broke into and out of the shafts. A gate structure attached to both the SST-2 and SST-3 diaphragm wall shafts was supported by a soldier pile reinforced cement bentonite wall.  The design of the gate structure SOE was handled collaboratively with the owner and their engineer, McMillen Jacobs Associates.  The team worked together to resolve challenges surrounding tying in the originally designed bracing scheme to the new SOE method and methods for exposing and supporting a 100-year-old existing brick sewer, as well as excavating through an abandoned brick sewer. This case study will present the design for the shafts and gate structures, the diaphragm wall construction methods, the unique challenges overcome for each shaft, and the benefits of the final solution to the overall project.

An access pathway and working platform were designed and constructed for equipment access for a Deep Soil Mixing (DSM) pilot study over a coal combustion residual (CCR) surface impoundment (SI). The DSM pilot study was conducted to evaluate slurry mix designs and construction techniques for installing DSM columns up to 95 feet deep. Two-dimensional (2-D) limit equilibrium and 2-D finite element analyses were used to evaluate multiple failure mechanisms including: (i) bearing capacity, (ii) punching shear of mixed ground and underlying CCR, (iii) effect of fluidized DSM columns on working platform stability, and (iv) liquefaction. The analysis results were used to design ground improvement required to increase bearing capacity and stability of the CCR under the proposed equipment access route. A long-reach excavator was used to perform shallow bucket mixing and walk onto the CCR SI atop previously mixed cells following a minimum cure time and acceptance of quality control test results. Prior to mobilizing the DSM rig, a static load test was conducted to evaluate performance of the working platform. Both the access pathway and working platform demonstrated acceptable performance under the design loads during the DSM pilot study. This case study emphasizes the economic and safety benefits that can be realized by appropriately designing critical temporary work items such as access pathways and working platforms in difficult ground conditions. INTRODUCTION A Deep Soil Mixing (DSM) pilot study was conducted at a coal combustion residual (CCR) surface impoundment (SI) to evaluate slurry mix designs and construction techniques for closure design of the SI (Site). Sluicing of CCR at the facility ceased and closure will be initiated based on requirements in the final United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Rule for Disposal of Coal Combustion Residuals from Electric Utilities, 40 CFR 257, effective October 19, 2015. The proposed closure approach involves constructing a DSM containment structure (DSM Wall) to separate the SI into two areas: (i) a closure by removal area; and (ii) a consolidate and cap-in-place area. The proposed DSM Wall would retain the CCR within the consolidated closure footprint and provide a barrier between the two areas of the SI. The predominant CCR in the SI where the pilot study was conducted were fly ash and bottom ash. CCR materials in surface impoundments are generally soft and saturated as a result of being sluiced into place and can present stability and safety challenges when performing earthwork activities.

The Crown Building, built circa 1921, is a 26-story iconic building located at West 57th Street and Fifth Avenue in the heart of Manhattan. The paper highlights collaboration between the geotechnical engineer and foundation contractor to develop economical and practical solutions to foundation design and construction challenges associated with this complex redevelopment project. The project includes both below-grade and above-grade expansion of the occupied building, and required undermining the existing foundations, and essentially doubling the foundation loads. The below-grade expansion required surgical foundation work including drilling minicaissons, shoring columns, underpinning, and excavating 20 feet of rock.

"This paper presents the drilling and grouting program performed at two abandoned landfills located into former calcarenite rock quarries in Manfredonia, Italy. Tests performed after the abandonment of the landfills detected leachate infiltration into the groundwater, which required the implementation of a remedial program. In order to seal the rock fissures and create an impervious basin at the base of the two landfills, sub-horizontal boreholes were drilled and grouted into the rock under the waste deposits. At the same time, sub-vertical boreholes were drilled and grouted along the perimeter, to laterally confine the landfills. Finally, the landfills were properly capped with an HDPE membrane, geogrid, geotextile and topsoil. The methodology implemented to create a watertight barrier under the two landfills was innovative and cost-effective. Moreover, the drilling and grouting minimized the environmental impact of the remedial work, since the waste remained in their original location and were not affected by the remedial process.IntroductionThe two landfills, “Pariti-1 RSU” and “Conte di Troia”, are located approximately 6 km (4 miles) southwest of Manfredonia, a small town close to Foggia, Italy (Fig. 1). These landfills are located into two rock quarries, formerly used for the extraction of calcarenite (i.e., a weak calcareous sandstone, in tuff facies), and were abandoned in the early 90s. The two landfills cover a total area of about 45,000 m2 (11.2 acres), and mainly include urban solid waste with a depth of up to 25 m (82 ft). The main characteristics of the two waste landfills are listed in Table 1."

"Ductile Iron Piles (DIPs) are a proven, viable alternative to conventional piles, and for the past five years have been successfully used throughout New England. The installation process of DIPs lends itself to both large and small projects. Because of their installation efficiency they provide a substantial cost savings over drilled micro piles. Several New England projects (both end bearing and friction) will be evaluated, focusing on the installation and design procedures.BackgroundThe driven ductile cast iron pile (DIP) is a simple, fast and highly effective pile system. Over the last 30 years over 10 million feet of this pile system has been installed worldwide predominantly in Europe. DIPs are a prefabricated driven pile system utilizing high strength ductile iron pipes which are manufactured using a spun-cast process having outside diameters of 4 5/8” and 6 5/8 inches. The standard pile lengths are 16.4 feet long. The pipes are manufactured with a tapered socket with an internal shoulder for full engagement at the top and a tapered spigot at the bottom. The individual pile sections can be connected with this Plug and Drive® connection to drive a pile of any length.(see figure 1)The DIP system’s inherent advantage is the simplicity of the installation process. The piles are driven to refusal or to a required penetration depth with the use of a high-impact highfrequency hydraulic hammer (ie. Breaker hammer). In most applications the hydraulic hammer is mounted on an appropriately sized excavator (see Photo 2). At the completion of driving the pile, the pile is cut off (see photo 5) and the remaining section of pile is fitted with the appropriate driving shoe and serves as the lead section for the next pile. Being able to reuse the cut off section, yields minimal if any pile shaft waste. The pile is then fitted with an appropriate pile cap plate to receive the load from the superstructure."

Foundation designs in a bid-build business environment can be challenging as so much depends on the capabilities of the selected contractor.  Owners and governing agencies must be open to value engineering (VE) alternatives.  This paper presents a case history where a foundation VE design was prepared for a county bridge replacement. The existing structure was a two-lane, simply-supported, truss bridge approximately 270 ft long and 30 ft wide.  The new bridge is a three-lane, two-span, continuous steel plate girder bridge approximately 250 ft long and 49 ft wide.  The new bridge was to be founded on two end abutments and one center pier by a total of 173 micropiles. Due to the number of micropiles and the time requirement to install a single micropile, an alternative design was proposed utilizing driven steel piles for support of the abutments and rock-socketed drilled shafts for the center pier. Replacing the micropiles with the proposed alternative was intended to reduce overall construction time and cost. Shallow bedrock and soil scour presented unique challenges for the bridge foundation and required an in-depth investigation to determine the required depth of foundation elements to achieve pile toe fixity. It was determined the sand layer thickness was not sufficient in some places to provide fixity to the VE driven piles and therefore the east abutment had to remain the original micropile design.  Substitution of driven pile and rock-socketed drilled shafts in the other areas still resulted in both time and cost savings.  This case history shows how engineers, contractors, owners, and governing officials can collaborate collectively to develop effective foundation solutions. "The Deep Mixing Method (DMM) represents a viable solution to improve adverse geotechnical properties of foundation soils for many practical applications. A pre-construction soil investigation campaign is necessary to assess soil properties and to retrieve samples of different soil layers for a laboratory Bench Scale Testing program (BST). The BST has to be designed using various binder types, binder contents, and water/cement ratios in each of the soil types. Following the laboratory program, a full scale Field Test (FT) is typically necessary to verify the results of the BST. This paper will highlight the differences and the importance of performing both pre-construction laboratory tests and field tests to ascertain the proper mixing parameters in the different soil layers. Comparative analyses and interpretations between the lab and field stages, along with accumulated information about soil properties and quality control (QC) results, allow fine-tuning the production parameters throughout a project. Three Deep Mixing Method projects, where both laboratory and field tests were executed, are illustrated: (1) The LPV 111 Project (New Orleans, LA, USA): DMM was used for ground improvement/foundation strengthening to stabilize and support the burden of a new levee raise; (2) The Rio Puerto Nuevo Project (San Juan, PR, USA): DMM was applied to improve the soils adjacent to a 90"" forced sewer main relocation and to improve the soils for the base of a new drainage channel; and (3) State Road 83 (US 331) over Choctawhatchee Bay project (Walton County, FL, USA): DMM was applied to stabilize the causeway sections of the bridge enhancement project. Data recorded during laboratory and field tests for these projects were analyzed and interpreted to select the most appropriate construction parameters to provide a final high-quality product.INTRODUCTIONThe Deep Mixing Method (DMM) represents a viable solution to improve adverse geotechnical properties of foundation soils in many situations. The effectiveness of working parameters depends largely on the physical and mechanical properties of the soil to be treated. Therefore, well designed laboratory and field test programs, aimed to disclose the interaction between the site-specific soils and the mixing parameters, are essential to achieve the desired end product.Generally a pre-construction soil investigation campaign has to be performed to assess soil properties and to retrieve samples of different soil layers for the laboratory Bench Scale Testing programme (BST). The BST has to be designed using various binder types, binder contents (or cement factors - CF), and grout water/cement ratios (W/C) in each of the soil types; the selection of the different combinations and dosages for the BST is based on past extensive experiences on similar materials. Following the laboratory programme results, a full scale Field Test (FT) has to be designed and executed, installing several DMM elements to verify the results of the BST and fine tune the construction parameters, with the appropriate binder type and dosage and the most effective equipment and tool configuration."

The evaluation of earthquake-induced liquefaction has become a routine part of geotechnical engineering design. For a given project, if an analysis identifies a potential for liquefaction and the consequences of liquefaction are deemed unacceptable, then some form of hazard mitigation is required. Mitigation efforts may consist of removing the liquefiable soils, bypassing the liquefiable soils with deep foundations, structurally accommodating the deformations or strength loss caused by liquefaction, or preventing the onset of liquefaction through ground improvement. The fundamental ground improvement mechanisms for liquefaction mitigation include densification, drainage, and reinforcement. When evaluating, recommending and specifying various ground improvement methods for liquefaction mitigation, practitioners should understand the fundamental mechanics involved and applicability and limitations of the various methods. The DFI Ground Improvement Committee offers a review of the fundamental mechanics and commentary on the applicability and limitations of each method to provide clarity and guidance on the issues related to ground improvement for liquefaction mitigation.

For a project located in Docklands Victoria, a high-rise development was proposed where the geology comprised soils of various compositions and consistencies to approximately 50m deep before being underlain by a siltstone bedrock. Due to the structural loads and spatial constraints, the majority of the foundation piles were designed to be socketed into the siltstone. Key factors in selecting the Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) technique as an effective piling solution are explained. These factors included structural and geological considerations, piling rig capabilities, pile testing regime to verify load performance and integrity, the extensive suite of construction quality controls and instrumentation records required while also achieving an appropriate piling budget and program. This paper also described how these factors underpinned the design approach of the final piling scheme. Critical aspects considered during construction and post-construction quality and pile testing records required to meet and satisfy the strict project piling specifications are also presented. The project adopted what may be considered the “best practice” in deep CFA piling. To the author’s knowledge, this project achieved the record for the deepest CFA piles in Australia where multiple piles to 53.8m deep were constructed.

"Ground freezing was successfully used to create an impermeable barrier wall along 3,000 feet of the downtown Seattle waterfront as part of the Seattle Seawall Replacement Project. This $360 million re-development involved removing the original 1930-era seawall and replacing it with a new, seismically resistant concrete wall supported on fill soil improved by jet-grout. The replacement wall was one of the largest construction projects in the state of Washington at the time. Ground freezing is typically used as both a structural shoring wall and groundwater cutoff. However, at this project it was used primarily as a cutoff wall to stop groundwater seepage into the 16-foot deep excavation from the landside areas.The project was divided into ten boxes (sections), each typically 200 to 600 feet in length. Only a few boxes were under construction at one time to reduce the impact on tourist-dependent local businesses. Soil conditions in the freeze zone consisted of sand, gravel and silt fill with abundant wood and debris. Tidally influenced groundwater, much of it contaminated, was difficult and expensive to control using wells during initial stages of construction. For all subsequent stages, a frozen soil wall extending to about 35 feet in depth was used to stop groundwater seepage into the excavation. An additional benefit of ground freezing included elimination of potential settlement beneath nearby buildings, utilities, and the Alaskan Way Viaduct that would likely have occurred with the use of conventional dewatering wells. The frozen soil wall crossed more than 130 buried utility locations (including water, sewer, storm, electrical, fiber optic, phone, gas, steam) with no damage. The frozen soil wall was very successful and limited groundwater influx from the landside to the seawall excavation to a negligible amount so that pumping, storage and treatment of contaminated groundwater was essentially eliminated."

Tanks play a vital role in Petroleum refineries and Petrochemical complexes by storing Petroleum substances at various stages. The performance of the foundation system of tanks significantly influences their overall performance, which is evaluated during hydro-testing and operational phases. This study focuses on assessing the performance of a large-diameter floating roof tank measuring 92 m in diameter and 20 m in height, which exhibited excessive settlements during hydro-testing due to the presence of organic soil patches. The maximum total settlement observed was 238 mm, surpassing the permissible limit of 150 mm. Additionally, differential settlements at specific locations exceeded the acceptable limit of 1 in 500. A comprehensive performance analysis of the tank's foundation system was conducted, leading to the tank's approval for utilization at 100% capacity. Furthermore, remedial measures were proposed to address the uneven levels at the tank periphery and prevent settlements in the future. This paper highlights the significance of location-specific soil investigation data, critical parameters for tank foundation system selection, detailed performance analysis of tank foundations, and suggested remedial measures for distressed foundations. By addressing these crucial factors, the study enhances the understanding of tank foundation systems, ultimately improving the overall performance and reliability of tanks in Petroleum refineries and Petrochemical complexes. "The 17.4 meter (57 ft) diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM), the world’s largest at the time of her launch in 2012, locally referred to as “Bertha,” is stuck. Incapacitated due to mechanical failure approximately 36 meters (120 ft) beneath downtown Seattle, situated precariously between the deteriorating Alaskan Way Viaduct and the failing Seattle Seawall. Accessing Bertha with a vertical shaft provides the best approach to address all facets needed for repairs and will allow the full removal of Bertha’s cutter head and related inner workings. Limited area above the tunnel alignment and the physical restrictions of existing infrastructure, create significant challenges for the design of an otherwise symmetrical shaft, requiring special attention to design and layout. Consequently, the access/recovery shaft design required a combination of 3m, 2.5m, 2.2m, 1.5m and 1m diameter unreinforced drilled secant piles coupled with various ground improvement techniques and dewatering, to fully satisfy the shoring design requirements. This paper will describe the shaft installation procedures, equipment used and pitfalls encountered while undertaking access shaft construction of this magnitude.INTRODUCTIONTunneling on Seattle’s SR99 tunnel project began in July of 2013. After slowly mining through a 4.5 m (14.76 ft) thick fiber-reinforced concrete headwall and the first of three stabilized “safe havens,” Bertha would proceed along the proposed alignment through 122 meters (400 ft) of jet grout improved soil at a rate of slightly over 1.6 m (5.25 ft) per day. Once past the improved area, it was planned that “Bertha” – would be moving at a rate of about 11 m (36 ft) per day. By the end of October 2013, Bertha had mined roughly 131 m, (430 ft) averaging 1.4 m (4.6 ft) per day and had begun mining within native soils. By December 2013, tunneling had reached the 244 m mark and Bertha was averaging 3.6 m (11.8 ft) per day, achieving as much as 12.8 m (42 ft) of progress on given days. Unfortunately, on December 6th, 2013, Bertha began to stumble and all progress quickly came to a halt.It was initially reported that an obstruction had stopped Bertha in her tracks. The preliminary investigation involved installation of 10 deep dewatering wells to reduce the hydrostatic pressure around the TBM, and allow visual inspection of the cutter head from within the TBM, and also to investigate for the presence of obstructions at the face of the cutter head. During this inspection, fragments of steel pipe were discovered entangled in the cutter head. The fragments were apparently from an abandoned 254 mm (10 in.) diameter monitoring well casing, previously installed by WSDOT to monitor ground water conditions for the design and planning of this tunnel project. After the steel was removed from the cutter head and cleared from Bertha’s path, tunneling resumed. It was then discovered that Bertha was only able to generate a slow crawl."

The technical challenges for accurate drilling positions increase with deep underground structures in inner city areas. Designed for jet grouting, specific sensors have been developed to record the alignment of rods during drilling by integrating microchips into the drilling rods. By feeding the rod with constant electric current, microchips, integrated in special couplings, can be read during the drilling process and tracked on monitors installed in the operator’s cockpit. The orientation for the drilling rod is provided by magnetic points and a compass, positioned above ground on the drilling rig. In combination with asymmetric drilling bits, it is now possible to steer the drilling hole to predetermined positions to compensate for deviations in deep bores. This type of drilling rod for jet grouting has been used in Berlin since summer 2019.

A geotechnical forensic evaluation of piles for an industrial facility in Haryana was performed to assess the quality of the piles and to evaluate piles installed using two different types of rigs. Low strain pile integrity tests were performed on all piles to assess the pile length and possible presence of structural defects. Coring was done through questionable piles for the clinching evidence of concrete quality and pile length. Probe holes adjoining piles helped confirm the bulging of piles at shallow depth. The paper highlights the importance of implementing a well-planned quality assurance program to confirm that all piles installed are of the desired quality.

Helical piles have often been characterized as handy little tools in the toolbox of solutions for structural support of foundations. They have provided options to construct foundations and anchorage in very challenging locations where more common methods were impractical. The stigma of being efficient for lightly loaded foundations has limited their use as highly loaded deep foundations. This paper will dispel the notion that helical piles are not a deep foundation option for large structures by presenting the case study of a 32-storey building in London, Ontario supported on helical piles. The building was constructed in a downtown location where all the problems associated with deep foundations were present – high water table, vibrations, compressible soil layers, limited access, logistics of soil removal, seismic considerations. These issues all had costs associated with them that helical piles and their installation process would limit or eliminate. This paper will present the detailed solution that helical piles offered the constructor of the new building. The solution included pre-design load testing and analysis of the results. The advantages of using helical piles in this case will also be presented from technical and constructability viewpoints to demonstrate why they should be considered for large structures.

To be involved in the construction of a deep dredged caisson for a major bridge pier is one of the most rewarding and professionally challenging experiences one can have in the bridge construction business. That experience was doubled in the construction of the two deep dredged caissons for the Highway 82 Bridge over the Mississippi River near Greenville, Mississippi. The challenges and the construction risks associated with constructing these two dredged caisson pier foundations highlight the construction engineering innovation associated with major bridge pier construction. The 1,378-foot Main Span of the Highway 82 Bridge makes it the longest cable stayed bridge span over the inland rivers of the United States. The main piers for this bridge are supported on two dredged caissons measuring 80-feet by 122-feet in plan, founding 200-feet and 170-feet below the river surface. The challenges of constructing these caisson structures, sinking them through 70-feet of water to the river bottom and then excavating and further sinking them to the founding grade without exceeding the design tolerances, were enormous. The construction engineering opportunities for innovation included major breakwater structures to create a friendly environment in 11 fUsec currents, the first time use of Articulated Concrete Mattresses for river bottom scour control, unique air dome design to maximize the buoyancy of the caisson structure while floating, a caisson guide system to assure positive control and positioning of the caisson during the initial sinking phases. and a comprehensive sinking plan to assure maximum control and minimum risk. Many of the innovative solutions to the construction challenges on this bridge will be incorporated into future caisson construction projects on the lower Mississippi River.

This article pertains to a 52-story residential high-rise building in the Rittenhouse Square section of Philadelphia, a densely developed area with mixed residential and commercial buildings. The tower is surrounded by Moravian Street along the north, Walnut Street to the south, a residential building to the east and a three-story historic building to the west. It measures 40 m (130 ft) long by 22.8 m (75 ft) wide with a finished floor elevation of 12 m (40 ft) and a full basement at elevation 7.5 m (24.5 ft). The historic building has a finished floor elevation of 13.7 m (45 ft) and its basement at elevation 10. 7 m (35.3 ft). It is supported on a 0.5 m (1.5 ft) thick rubble wall with a bottom at elevation 10.6 m (35.0 ft). The tower mat extends 36 ft (11 m) below grade or about 28 ft (8.S) below the existing historic build­ing, thereby requiring underpinning. When fully loaded, the settlement of the mat will cause the abut ting underpinning to also setUe, which would be detrimental to the historic building. Therefore, an innovative solution was necessary to isolate the underpinning from the stresses induced by the adjacent mat to safeguard the historic structure.
