"Geerite (Cu1.6S) is a rhombohedral copper sulphide which occurs naturally in epitactic replacement of sphalerite; cell dimensions closely approximate those of the host sphalerite.Geerite-type structures can be produced by leaching digenite (Cu1.8S) in ferric sulphate solutions. X -ray diffract ion and electron microprobe studies indicate that eight metastable geeritetype structures can be produced, depending upon the concentration of f erric sulphate solution used and the duration of the each. Although compositions cluster on or near values observed for natural phases, optical properties indicate that we are dealing with polymorphs of these phases. Leaching of chalcocite (CU2Sj in dilute f erric sulphate solutions produces similar results. In contrast, leaching of chalcocite in more concentrated solutions seems to produce true analogues of natural minerals.During froth flotation, sphalerite is activated with a monolayer of floatable copper sulphide with the composition, CuS, of the mineral covellite. However, covellite is not significantly more floatable than sphalerite, and has an incompatible structure because of the presence of covalently-bonded atoms of sulphur. Leaching ofdigenite was used to produce a polymorph of covellite with a geerite-type structure, compatible with that of sphalerite. This polymorph has a flotational behaviour similar to copper-activated sphalerite, suggesting that the monolayer has a geerite-type CuS structure. IntroductionIn an ideal close-packed sulphide structure the distance between sulphur layers, D, is equal to 2R 2/3, where R is the radius of the sulphur atoms. In sulphides with covalently-bonded sulphur layers, such as covellite (Fig. I), D will be an average of the number of covalentl y-bonded and close-packed sulphur layers, weighted as to the relative number of each type of layer. Both D and R are spacings which are readily identifiable structurally and on X-ray diffraction patterns. Goblel has shown that for copper-iron sulphides with metal-to-sulphur ratios between 0 and 2 and copper-to-total metal ratio s between 113 and I there are strong correlations between composition and measured D and R distances (Fig. 2). D can be represented by a single empirical equation relating interlayer spacing to composition; R must be represented by three equations relating the radius of sulphur atoms to composition. One of these equations (R, in Fig. 2) represents ideal close-packed behaviour, the other two represent sulphur radii greater than (R1) or less than (Rh) the ideal."

"Planned increases in electric furnace productivity and higher matte temperatures needed for the Sudbury Smelter's S02 Abatement Plan, require an improved matte tap hole. Since startup in 1978, the matte tap holes have been incrementally improved by the addition of copper cooling blocks around the refractory tap blocks. These improvements provided a tap block life of about 100 taps per campaign.In July 1993, a prototype matte taphole was installed in Number 2 Electric Furnace to develop the technology to increase tap hole service life. The design was based on a heat transfer model of the tapping process to determine candidate refractory materials and cooler arrangements. The prototype tap hole features increased copper cooling, high conductivity refractories and extensive instrumentation. Eight trial campaigns are reviewed outlining the performance of silicon carbide and graphite refractories and typical heat loads during tapping.IntroductionFalconbridge Limited operates two 36 MYA, 6 electrode submerged arc electric furnaces in Falconbridge, Ontario. The furnaces, commissioned in 1978, smelt a partially roasted nickel-copper calcine, to produce matte for converting and slag for discard. Additional details of the smelter are available in the literature(1-4).Each furnace was equipped with two matte tap holes located in the furnace end wall. Early in the campaign, matte tap holes were identified as a weak area in the furnace which could be improved. From 1981 to 1987, incremental improvements were made to the design by the addition of water cooled copper blocks. In 1993, a prototype matte tap hole was designed and installed in Number 2 electric furnace to develop the technology to increase tap hole service life. Improved service life is required to meet planned increases in electric fWl1ace productivity and the higher matte temperature needed for the smelter's S02 Abatement Plan.This paper reviews matte tap hole development since 1978; outlines the prototype matte tap hole design, refractory selection and installation; and details the performance of the prototype tap hole during the first eight campaigns."

"The area of uranium deposition is situated within the Churchill Province on the western edge of the Wollaston Iithostructural domain where it underlies the eastern edge of the Helikian Athabasca Formation. The Collins Bay deposit is 6 miles north-northeast of the Rabbit Lake mine. Two principal zones of uranium mineralization are described.The ""A"" zone is a partly eroded, high-grade pod of metal oxide and arsenides sheathed by clay-like minerals. It trends north-northeast and lies under 25 to 40feet of water. Uranium mineralization is localized at or adjacent to the unconformity between the Athabasca Formation and the basement rocks. The basement comprises a granitoid Archean terrain overlain by paragneisses of the Aphebian Wollaston Group. ""A "" zone ore contains phyllosilicates, quartz, pitchblende, rammelsbergite, pararammelsbergite, carbonaceous material, galena, gersdorffite, niccolite, carbonate and a trace of sphalerite.The ""B "" zone lies 6,000 ft south of the ""A "", and subcrops under till cover. It is a partly eroded zone composed of metal oxide and arsenides which occur within variably altered Athabasca Formation. Minerals recognized are phyllosilicates, pitchblende, niccotite, gersdorffite, millerite, carbonaceous material, pyrrhotite, skutterudite and a trace of galena. The Athabasca Formation varies from 90 to 160ft thick. Granitoid gneisses of probable Archean age and paragneisses of the Wollaston Group underlie the deposit. An easterly dipping thrust fault transects its length.The deposit is typical of the ""unconformity-type"" uraniumnickel deposits of the Athabasca Basin. Observed features fit well with the ""diagenetic-hydrothermal"" model for such deposits, as envisioned by Hoeve and Sibbald (/978)."

A field laboratory for use in monitoring underground mine air quality has been developed and proven in underground service. The laboratory includes two separate monitoring systems and data analysis computer programs. One is the Mine Air Monitoring Laboratory (MAML). This is an enclosed trailer-mounted laboratory capable of monitoring CO2, CO, NO, NO2 particulate matter, S02, NH3, temperature and air velocity in the mine drift. The MAML can be up to 1000 feet away from the area being monitored. The second system is the vehicle data system, mounted on the load-haul-dump (LHD) vehicle, which monitors engine speed, engine fuel rack position, exhaust gas temperature, ambient temperature, vehicle speed, CO2 concentration near the operators' breathing zone and the mode of operation of the vehicle. The two computer data analysis programs and the two field instrument systems comprise a complete Mine Air Quality Laboratory (MAQL) for underground pollutant studies. Data from the systems have been used for studying vehicle duty cycles, ventilation systems, exhaust after-treatment devices, vehicle exhaust system design and portable instrumentation. Descriptions of the laboratory are presented along with a summary of some of the experiments performed. The capabilities of the lab are discussed, along with future potential uses.

"In today's operating and investment climate, project evaluation is both more important and more difficult. It is more important because economic and financial analyses of a proposed project provide a basis for judgment of a project's commercial viability by equity participants, lenders and, in some cases, other participants such as off takers and governments. It is more difficult because these analyses must, of necessity, be based on estimates, projections and evaluations which must be made in a period remarkable for its economic and political uncertainty.Project evaluation starts with the analysis of the engineering, commercial and financial information available. Beginning with the preliminary design and capital cost estimates, alternative financing plans can be developed outlining possible sources of funds, terms and security arrangements. Pro-forma financial statements can also be developed, including sources and uses of funds, cash flow schedules, income statements and balance sheets. With these results, various profitability measures can be determined.Subsequently, in an effort to deal with uncertainty, these results can be tested by measuring the impact on project viability and profitability of changes in project and external variables such as product process, mining and processing rates, operating and financing costs, currency exchange rates and other factors.The results are a number of financial projections reflecting different assumptions for key project parameters. The projections can be used to structure the project to achieve the maximum financial performance. Projects, the financial viability and profitability of which can be demonstrated under varying market conditions, will be the most competitive in capital markets."

"Safety and health issues are and have been in the last decade a very high priority item with all parties involved in the Canadian mining industry. As a result of this high level of concern for workers' safety and health, Canadian mines are at the leading edge of environmental control technology. For the most part, the occurrence of pollutants in mines is unavoidable. Dust from mining operations, airborne radiation, gases and heat from the strata as well as gases and particulate from diesel engine emissions will undoubtedly be found to some level in most Canadian mines. A lot of work remains to be done, however, in order to bring all Canadian mines at the same level of proficiency when it comes to safety and health. Also, more work is needed in order to maintain our status as world leaders in this field.CANMET's Mining Research Laboratories (MRL) in Elliot Lake and Bells Corners, Ontario, with the cooperation of the mining industry, have contributed to improving environmental conditions in underground and surface mining and milling operations. The extent of collaboration and efforts vary widely from long-term, multi-million dollar projects between several interested parties to smaller projects involving one laboratory and a single mining operation. This paper gives examples of such collaborative efforts and potential future directions as they apply to: mine ventilation analysis using tracer gas techniques, optimization of mine ventilation network efficiency using real-time monitoring and controlled recirculation (heat saving), respirable dust and radiation sampling and control techniques, diesel emission control using regenerative ceramic filters and, finally, the control of sulphide dust explosions and resulting sulphur dioxide production."

"Exposure to airborne respirable silica in surface and underground mine operations is known to be the cause of industrial lung diseases. For this reason, silica is a regulated substance and worker exposure must be monitored regularly. Diesel exhaust also contains substances which are potential caricinogens. In an underground setting, diesel particulate may be the main component of what is referred to as respirable combustible dust (ReD). Although diesel particulate or soot is not at present a rigorously regulated substance, new epidemiological data is prompting North American institutes and agencies to regulate diesel soot or RCD exposure. This paper describes a method where by silicaand RCD exposure may be determined using a single personal sample. In this method, an airborne respirable dust sample is obtained and analyzed nondestructively for silica components using an on-filter X-ray diffraction method. Filters are then ashed at 500°C in a muffle furnace over a four-hour period to determine mass loss due to RCD burning. "Tumbler Ridge, Canada's newest resource community, has been developed differently than have been other resource communities.Since its conceptualization, emphasis has been placed on the establishment of a traditional municipal government at early a stage as possible.Planning f or the community goes back to 1977. By then, extensive study by provincial agencies had shown a new resource town would be required to exploit north east coal. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs, in conjunction with a consultant named R.A. Rabnett began the extensive Tumbler Ridge conceptual plan.The results of the conceptual plan are evident in the organizational and planning goals of Tumbler Ridge. In every aspect from the election of officials to some financial matters, the town functions as a normal municipality. With the resource companies of the North East Coal Development within its municipal boundaries. Tumbler Ridge has been able to debenture its capital projects against its municipal tax base.The town's ability to function as a normal municipality is enhanced by its control over Crown land it has purchased from the province. This gives it further control over the development of the community and helps in establishing agreements with the resource companies and the provincial government to ensure that housing and service needs are met. While resource company representatives sit on certain municipal committees, their roles are advisory in nature.The community continues to move toward full municipal status and will have a fully elected Council by 1986.BackgroundPlanning for the development of northeast British Columbia coal resources began in 1976 under the aegis of the provincial Cabinet Committee on Coal Development. A series of subcommittees were established including a Townsite/Community Development subcommittee. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs chaired this subcommittee and continued as the lead agency for the provincial settlement planning effort over the period 1976 to 1981."

"A summary is presented of the report completed by the Coal Mining Research Centre in 1980. This report was of a cross-pit conveyor system applied as an auxiliary mining complement to the major stripping unit, a dragline. The purpose of the CMRC report was to evaluate selective mining and replacement of the upper horizons of the strata as an aid in reclamation. These strata were the topsoil, subsoil and glacial till.Past utilization of cross-pit conveyor systems and related engineering studies were assessed. The parameters of the study were based on the mining and geological conditions of the Alberta prairie coal mines. The principal excavator for stripping was a dragline. Excavation of the upper horizons was done by a bucket-wheel excavator discharging onto the crosspit conveyor. Alternative equipment applications were economically compared. Four cases or geological sections were evaluated in detail. The economics of the alternative mining systems for each of the cases were determined. In all instances, the most economical solution was a tandem system utilizing a dragline with a bucket-wheel excavator/ cross-pit conveyor system."

"The circulation wear rates of pure nickel, cupronickel and nickel-plated-steel coins were measured and found to be in the ratio 1:3:1 . The relative wear rates of nickel and cupronickel coins were similar to those reported in earlier studies, and the circulation wear data for nickel were used as a reference in laboratory wear tests. A correlation between circulation wear rates and laboratory wear rates formed the basis for a prediction of service life using relief legibility as an 'end of life' criterion. This criterion was determined to be an average surface thickness loss of 12 um. The surf aces of nickel and Nickel-Banded-Steel (N-B-STM) coins were observed to harden both in circulation and in the laboratory tests at a rate of approximately I VHN/year of actual or simulated service life. It was also observed that the laboratory wear rate of N-B -S coins increased as nickel cladding thickness increased and this effect was attributed to differences in surface hardness.Wear test results are also reported for the new Canadian dollar coin material which shows a better wear resistance than pure nickel. IntroductionThe subject of coinage wear has a long history, and a number of studies have been published, concerned both with the measurement of circulation wear rates and with accelerated laboratory tests to simulate the behaviour of coinage materials in service. As early as 1803, wear tests were conducted by Hatchett on gold coinage using various types of vibratory and tumbling machines». These tests were commissioned by King George III of England who was concerned about the wear of gold coins in circulation.Early in this century, Adrian performed laboratory tests that showed that the wear rates of cupronickel 75/25 and nickel coins were in the ratio 3:1 and this ratio was later confirmed in laboratory tests reported by Daeppen and Zurrerw, The latter authors also weighed cupronickel and nickel coins that had been in circulation for various times and observed the same 3: I ratio. There was further support from Tylczak and Blickensderfer who reported significantly higher abrasive wear rates for cupronickel compared to nickel, when rubbed against sand paper."

"Using the concept of economic life and marginal analysis, it can be shown that proper equipment replacement timing can save a mining company many thousands of dollars. To assist management with determining the economic life of mining equipment, a new computer package has been developed. The package, called ERG (equipment replacement guide), incorporates all important economic factors related to equipment usage, such as operating costs, maintenance costs, salvage values, depreciation, volume of work, tax credits, inflation rates, ROJ, etc. The information is used in a series of equations which balance the costs of new equipment against the total cost of old equipment. The solution of the equations determines economic life and the point in time when the old equipment should be replaced. IntroductionIn an operating mine, equipment must eventually be replaced or downgraded for a variety of reasons. Fleets of haul trucks, dozers and other major pieces of equipment deteriorate over time until the mounting costs of maintenance and repair force either a major overhaul or the ir replacement by new and more efficient pieces of equipment.The question of determining the best time to replace old equipment has been approached in many different ways. Various methods, ranging from operating experience, intuition and physical necessity to sophisticated computer models have been devised to help cope with equipment replacement decisions . The best of the se will incorporate the most important economic factors related to equipment usage, such as operating and maintenance costs, salvage values, depreciation, work delivered, the cost of capital, tax credits and, of course, the effects of inflation.Economic TheoryThe fundamentals of equipment replacement theory grew out of the interaction between economics, engineering and finance. The use of annual cost comparisons and rate-of return calculations were helpful in handling situations in which assets with different finite lives were being compared. Later developments bringing together the concept of economic life and marginal analysis helped provide additional refinements to the theory. Taylorui showed that the displacement of an aging asset with a similar, but newer, asset can be justified economically when the marginal cost of keeping the asset one more year exceeds the minimum uniform annual cost equivalent of the proposed replacement."

"Uncertainty is an important feature of many investments, but it is especially important for mineral properties. Mine properties often entail large investments and fixed commitments. Managers in the mining industry often view price uncertainty as undesirable, due to the possibility that the price of the mined commodity will fall to a level that prevents the firm from recovering its investment and fixed costs. This paper identifies pitfalls in conventional valuation methods and outlines a new approach to valuation based on option pricing theory and dynamic programming. In the process, it identifies generic strategies for organizing mine production in ways that allow the owner to benefit from the uncertainty in mineral prices. IntroductionRisk is pervasive in the mining industry. The operation and maintenance of a mine may involve high, and unavoidable, fixed costs. A mine owner can only begin to recover these fixed costs if the price of the mined commodity is greater than the incremental cost of production. But the prices of many minerals are extremely volatile. The price volatility of copper has been significantly higher than the price volatility of a typical stock, for example. A mine owner cannot be sure that the price of the mineral product will remain high long enough for the firm to recover its capital and fixed costs.Mine owners are able to minimize their losses during periods when the output price is below the incremental cost of production by temporarily closing operations. During these periods they incur only fixed costs. While shut-downs help minimize losses, the y do not help the firm recover its initial investment. If output prices remain low long enough, the fixed costs and original investment may never be recovered. High fixed costs, therefore, lead to substantial downside risk."

"This paper provides a foundation for studying the growth of fractures in presence of other discontinuities and different anisotropies of low permeable hydrocarbon formations and helps to improve the design strategies for multistage fracturing.The multistage fracturing technology has recently been used to exploit low permeable hydrocarbon reservoirs. However, the mechanism of hydraulic fractures interaction and the impact of local heterogeneities on ultimate trajectory of the growing hydraulic fractures are not yet understood in depth. A fully coupled poroelastic Finite Element based model is developed to investigate the mixed mode propagation behaviour of growing hydraulic fractures. This model takes advantage of an explicit representation of the fracture which enables us to take the effects of rock and fluid related parameters into account. Moreover, impact of fracture geometry and leak-off phenomenon is investigated. The refined mesh around the crack provides the added advantage of more detailed stress distribution, pore pressure change and back stress in the vicinity of the fracture and in particular at the fracture tip. The potential deviation propensity of the fractures is evaluated based on the fundamental rule that fractures propagate perpendicular to the direction of the minimum horizontal stress.This study shows that pressurization of transverse hydraulic fractures results in the reorientation of local principal stresses, particularly in vicinity of fracture tips. Variation of flow patterns clearly influences the evolution of shear stress around the fracture tips which will potentially lead to mixed-mode I and II fracturing and consequently, fracture deviation. The presence of local heterogeneities such as preexisting fissures and/or fractures is a main source of such pore pressure induced stress redistribution and reorientation and potential deviation of hydraulic fractures.Most existing models ignore or simplify the effect of pore pressure/stress coupling as well as the fracture geometry and fluid flow within the fracture. Also, the fluid leak-off from the hydraulic fracture into the formation, which is a controlling factor in fracture growth, is often considered using analytical models. Taking advantage of a fully coupled porelastic model along with an explicitly discretized fracture, this study provides a more realistic insight into the complex fracture propagation processes of multistage fracturing operations particularly in presence of reservoir geo-mechanical complexities."

"Cigar Lake Mining Corporation is presently operating an underground test mine in northern Saskatchewan, with a view to developing a high grade uranium deposit. The mining test is intended to demonstrate that the innovative mining methods designed are safe and economical. Two vertical mining methods are considered for the test:• box hole boring from the lower level;• blind boring from the upper level.In both cases, it is anticipated to freeze the ground before excavation to ensure hole stability and limit the inflow of water. Special care will be taken to minimize radiation exposure of personnel.Remote controlled equipment will be used where applicable.The access to the orebody was an important component of the test. After shaft sinking to a depth of 500 m, development work commenced at the 420 level in fractured sandstone which was grouted to restrict the inflow of formation water. The drifting continued in a section of poorly consolidated sand, clay and sandstone; this area was frozen to allow stabilization prior to excavation. At the 480 level relatively little water was encountered in the altered basement gneiss and grouting was not necessary; however, extensive ground support was required in the soft ground areas."

"The counter-current fluidized cascade is a novel and potentially efficient pneumatic gravity separation device. Data are presented on over 150 runs of cleaning Alberta thermal coals, covering several size ranges. The coarser sizes of coal were processed in admixture with a fluidizing medium consisting of 0.5-by 0.1-mm hematite (or magnetite) and limestone particles. The partition curves for coal particles larger than about 3 mm, mixed with fluidizing medium, showed that the sharpness of separation achievable with the cascade approaches that of wet heavy medium processes, whereas with particles in the size range of 3 by 0.6 mm the sharpness of separation was comparable to that of a Baum jig. Useful cleaning was also achieved with particles smaller than 0.6 mm , Throughput rates of up to 11 tonnes per metre width of cascade per hour were achieved, with no indication of a deterioration in performance.IntroductionPneumatic coal beneficiation has steadily lost ground vis-a-vis hydraulic beneficiation during the past quarter century, primarily because of the sharper separations achievable with the latter methods. Nevertheless, there are certain inherent advantages of pneumatic separation methods which would give them an advantage in the market place were it possible to increase their efficiency to be technically competitive with those of hydraulic processes. These advantages are a dry product, resulting in a higher calorific value per ton, and avoidance of the problems associated with treatment and storage of process waste waters. Also, although it may be necessary to dry the raw coal prior to pneumatic processing, the dry rejects produced constitute an ideal fuel for a fluidized-bed combustor, which could provide heat both for drying the coal and for other purposes."

"This paper outlines the upgrading of a double-drum 2000 hp cage hoist to provide fully-automatic operation from shaft station control panels. The application utilizes programmable controller technology to provide all necessary functions for movement of personnel and material to 22 locations in a 4000 ft shaft.Various functions involving special design considerations such as ""chairing"", ""jogging"", and three modes of ""multi-level calling service"", are outlined. The use of higher level PLC functions to optimize memory utilization and simulate ""elevator service"" required the addition of a comprehensive fault finding software section to aid in troubleshooting.This paper will deal primarily with the automation portion of the project with references made to other pertinent aspects which were prerequisite to automatic operation. It is not intended to deal with every design detail, but rather to provide an overview of what can be done in the area of automation for those considering such an application. INTRODUCTIONEarly hoisting control systems provided only the essential elements of control, leaving many responsibilities with the operator. With advancements in various areas of technology, electromechanical devices were incorporated to enforce slow-down in end zones, control acceleration rates, monitor safety devices, etc. Brake control systems were supplied to allow for ""single-stick"" operator control, regulated deceleration during emergency brake applications, etc.These additions enhanced the over-all performance but were generally confined to speed and current regulation. Some mechanical devices, such as travelling nut limits, etc.; were used to provide ""position"" control to multiple locations within the shaft. These devices, in conjunction with rather extensive relay control panels, did allow for the establislunent of some automatic cage hoists . The hoists were often limited to service from point ""A"" to point ""B""', involving a limited number of levels due to the complexities of the mechanical interfaces employed. Only limited systematic work sequences were possible . .Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) were introduced into industry in the mid-70s and have since gained acceptance in mining applications such as pumping, ventilation, ore handling, etc. This technology, being ""software"" based, allows complexities to reside in the program rather than increasing the number of physical control elements. This has opened the door into hoisting systems for automatic loading and hoisting of ore as well as a means to achieve a comprehensive package of automated cage hoisting functions."

"Some progress has already been made in defining the parameters which will determine the performance of a guidance system in a mine shaft. Very little information is available, however, to help designers or operators predict the effects of varying these parameters in new or existing installations.The experience we have gained from monitoring a variety of installations has led to the development of a model which simulates the motion of a conveyance as it moves through a mineshaft, restrained by fixed guides.This paper presents a general analysis of the performance of the guidance system used in several installations, as well as a detailed description of the problem encountered at one mine and the steps taken to solve it.IntroductionOur company has investigated in some depth the problems that arise in the guidance of mine hoist conveyances.We have a telemetering accelerometer which we obtained to test mine hoist brakes. Frequently, during brake tests, the mine owners request us to use this instrument to measure the lateral motion of the conveyance ""to check guide alignment"". However, on rare occasions, shocks up to .5 g will occur. That is, the conveyance exerts a force of up to half its loaded weight on the guide. If the guide slips or is damaged by this force, it will be misaligned for future trips and become the cause of future shocks. In time, the whole guidance system can become misaligned."

"Some progress has already been made in defining the parameters which will determine the performance of a guidance system in a mine shaft. Very little information is available, however, to help designers or operators predict the effects of varying these parameters in new or existing installations.The experience we have gained from monitoring a variety of installations has led to the development of a model which simulates the motion of a conveyance as it moves through a mineshaft, restrained by fixed guides.This paper presents a general analysis of the performance of the guidance system used in several installations, as well as a detailed description of the problem encountered at one mine and the steps taken to solve it.IntroductionOur company has investigated in some depth the problems that arise in the guidance of mine hoist conveyances.We have a telemetering accelerometer which we obtained to test mine hoist brakes. Frequently, during brake tests, the mine owners request us to use this instrument to measure the lateral motion of the conveyance ""to check guide alignment"". "The Snow Lake massive sulphide deposits are hosted by Aphebian volcanic rocks of the Flin Flon - Snow Lake greenstone belt, which in this area were deformed and metamorphosed to the amphibolite facies during the Hudsonian orogeny. All the known deposits occur in felsic rocks a short distance below the contact with an overlying mafic rock unit.The Stall Lake copper deposit occurs close to the top of an explosive felsic volcanic sequence. Rocks stratigraphically underlying the deposit have been hydrothermally altered by the mineralizing fluids. The sulphides were probably deposited from submarine volcanic vent(s) on the flanks of a felsic dome. The ore has been tightly folded, flattened and elongated parallel to the northerly trending lineation of the surrounding rocks during the several periods of deformation. Strike lengths of the lenses range from 60 to 300 feet and plunge-to-strike ratios are as much as 15:1.Ore lenses 1 to 4 typically consist of massive coarse-grained pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and pyrite. A stratigraphically higher lens differs in that it contains fine-grained pyrite and chalcopyrite, with an increase in sphalerite toward its hanging wall. The No.4 orebody has a distinct footwall alteration zone characterized by brecciation and abundant chlorite-staurolite-garnet schist, with minor kyanite, anthophyllite, cordieriteand anhydrite, as well as sulphide minerals. Chemically, the alteration zone is distinguished from the unaltered felsic rocks by Na20 depletion and Mg-Fe enrichment.IntroductionThe Stall Lake copper deposit is located aproximately 4 miles southeast of Snow Lake in northern Manitoba (Fig. 1). The Snow Lake district has been a producer of gold (Rex, Bingo, Laguana and Nor-Acme Mines) and, since the fifties, of copper and zinc from deposits of Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting Co., Ltd . The district is located near the eastern limit of the Flin Flon - Snow Lake greenstone belt, which contains Amisk metavolcanic rocks of Aphebian age."

Both the 8 and A-C ore zones of the Heath Steele Mine contain extensive areas of brecciated ore. This texturally distinct ore type has been tentatively defined as a fragmental or conglomerate massive sulphide. It consists of subangular and round fragments of pyrite up to 30 em in diameter, smaller quartz clasts and chloritized, mineralized, lithic fragments in a faintly banded matrix of pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite. The chalcopyrite is concentrated in the pressure shadows of the fragments and appears to reflect remobilization and recrystallization during a deformation which postdates the formation of the clasts. A generally conformable relationship with the underlying banded pyrite-sphalerite ore, discordancy with the host banded argillites, spatial distribution and similarity to Kuroko ores suggest that the fragmental ore is of primary origin and that breccia formation is probably due to soft-sediment slumping or sliding initiated by volcanic explosions, as hypothesized for similar massive sulphides in various Japanese mines. It is nevertheless recognized that certain structural features in some clasts may result from deformation preceding the formation of the breccia, and at this stage a tectonic origin cannot be completely eliminated.
