Nickel laterites contain about 70% of all continental or terrestrial nickel resources; therefore the recovery of nickel from lateritic ores has large economic significance. The processing of lateritic ores involves the preparation and movement of concentrated aqueous suspensions. However due to complex characteristics and non-Newtonian properties, ranging from shear-thinning to shear-thickening and from thixotropic to rheopectic, a basic understanding of the flow behaviour must be developed. This understanding will assist in the development of new plants and the operation of existing plants. The work in this paper involves the characterization of three ore types from the Vermelho ore deposit to categorize them as rheologically simple to complex. Rheological testing was also conducted on pure mineral samples that represent the main minerals in these samples. The results show that the rheological properties of the ore types can be related to the surface properties and physical characteristics of the main mineral constituents.

"The Cape Ray Fault Zone of southwestern Newfoundland contains two notable electrum/ base metal sulphide quartz vein lode occurrences hosted by two contrasting lithological units, viz. a graphite schist horizon and a granite. The two occurrences, although in proximity, are not in direct contact, but, based on geochronological, geochemical and isotopic evidence, they were apparently deposited from hydrothermal fluids generated as a vapour phase from the magmatic progenitor of the Windowglass Hill granite.This paper provides further evidence, from REE and background A u and Ag data, for the magmatic origin of the hydrothermal fluids. Wall rocks to the electrum-bearing quartz veins in both the schists and granite have experienced a LREE depletion probably due to leaching by Cl-bearing solutions. Gold and silver contents are typically low in all rock types but there is a slight elevation in gold concentrations in those units in contact with the Window glass Hill granite. The granite also has the relatively highest gold and silver contents of any unit in the region.IntroductionThis paper presents the evidence from rare earth element (REE) and gold/silver concentration data for the magmatic origin of hydrothermal fluids responsible for deposition of the Cape Ray electrum deposits of southwestern Newfoundland. The two deposits occur in the Cape Ray Fault Zone (Fig. I) within the Windsor Point Group and Window glass Hill granite. The larger occurrence is called the Main Shear Showing and consists of a deformed quartz vein horizon, which extends for - 6 km, within the late Devonian Windsor Point Group. This unit is an intermixed ignimbrite and mafic tuff sequence with associated schists (metasediments) and gabbros. The host rocks to the mineralized quartz veins are interleaved graphite, chlorite and sericite schists. Basal ignimbrites within the Windsor Point Group have been dated, by Rb/Sr isotopic methods, at 377 ±21 Ma (Wilton, 1983a). The basal ignimbrites also have enriched REE patterns, an elevated initial Sr ratio (0.709) and a peraluminous-siliceous nature which suggest they resulted from the partial melting of continental crust (Wilton, 1984)."

"A number of studies have identified the presence of heavy minerals in the Athabasca oil sands. A 1996 Mineral Development Agreement study into the recovery of Co-Products identified low operating costs, a simple flowsheet and access to market as key drivers in advancing interest in a viable project.Commercial bitumen extraction processes recover 50% of the titanium heavy minerals and 85% of the zircon into froth containing 1 % of the feed solids. Froth treatment tailings grade is 11.5% Ti02 and 3.6% Zr02.Processing this high grade feed in a combination of flotation, roasting, screening, gravity concentration and magnetic separation, results in concentrates of rutile, leucoxene, ilmenite, zircon and rare earths of marketable quality.A combination of high grade feed and a simple process lead to operating costs among the lowest in the industry. Low cost heavy minerals and low energy costs indicate an intriguing potential for low cost pigment production in Alberta. The production of heavy minerals from oil sands remains one of the largest untapped resources in the Province of Alberta1.0 IntroductionThis paper describes the results of an investigation into the recovery of heavy minerals from tailings produced by the major oil sands plants. "The Sherman Mine, Temagami, Ontario, is an iron ore pellet operation rated at one million tons per year capacity. Mining is done from three open pits in two bands of Keewatin iron-formation intercalated in a 'greenstone belt' thought to be part of the Archean 'Abitibi Belt'. The bands of iron-formation are tabular and steeply dipping, averaging 75 degrees. The principal ore mineral is magnetite.Blast holes, 1214 inches in diameter, are drilled on 28-foot centers, each hole being sampled and assayed for both total iron and magnetic iron. Concentration tests are made in the laboratory to determine the anticipated concentrate grade. Two classes of ore are recognized -'liberating' or 'refractory'. Blending is done on iron con-.tent, degree of ease of liberation (i.e. grain size) and chunkiness. The latter is important, as primary milling is done in autogenous mills. Actual daily mill results are compared with predicted grade from blast holes, exploration diamond drill holes and pit inspection. Hourly mill samples are analyzed by the X-Ray Fluorescent Analyzer, with emphasis on silica grade. In 1969, the pellet grade was improved from 7 .01 per cent silica natural to 5.50 per cent silica natural."

A property based dynamic model of flotation was built and validated for training purposes. The model is based on the work of the AMIRA P9 project. The recovery of each particle with composition and size is calculated in a given simulation step. The model takes into account machine and operational parameters such as air flowrate and froth height. The model was created using fullscale test data on Pyhlisalmi Cu-Zn-pyrite ore with flotation kinetics of multiphase particles determined. Simulation and validation shows that model can predict the dynamic behavior of the process accurately enough for training purposes.

Squirrel cage induction motors are the mostly used motors at present. Currently, the rotors of the squirrel cage induction motors are produced by aluminum die casting technique with the advantages of low cost of rotors. It is well known that the copper’s electrical conductivity is around 40% higher than that of aluminum. If copper is used to replace the current widely used aluminum in rotors, the total loss of motors will be reduced, hence increasing the overall motor efficiency. Copper rotors can be used to produce high efficiency and even super premium efficiency motors without enlarge the motor frame size. Considering the huge quantity of motors, the die casting process is the best solution to produce copper rotor with economic cost. Because of the characteristics of copper, it is difficult to produce copper rotors by casting similar to that done in aluminum rotors. In order to improve the die casting quality of copper rotor, a new tooling structure was developed and the casting process of copper rotor was simulated and analyzed by Any-casting software. The filling process, solidification process, inner gas distribution and residual melt modulus were analyzed. It was found that the design of symmetrical runner and inner runner on both sides was helpful to reduce the impact of molten copper to the cavity surface during the filling process. The use of Slag traps array can reduce die casting defects inside the end rings. That will be helpful to improve the rotor quality. INTRODUCTION Squirrel-cage AC induction motors are most widely used in the world. In 2017, the total installed capacity of AC motors in China has reached more than 1.2 billion kW, and the annual power consumption accounts for about 60% of the total national electricity consumption. To improve the efficiency of squirrel-cage motor will be helpful to energy conservation and environment protection. There are several ways to improve efficiency of induction motors, using copper rotor is one of the most effective solutions. Although Canadian bentonite is competitive in quality for most uses, it has not been accepted for the pelletizing of iron ore concentrates. In 1962, Canada consumed about 10,000 tons of imported bentonite for this use. By the end of 1965, the planned domestic consumption for this purpose alone will probably be more than 100,000 tons a year, valued at about $3 million. Consequently, a challenge exists for the establishment of a Canadian source of high-quality bentonite for pelletizing. Such a bentonite would also be suitable for the two other major applications -well drilling and foundry use. Brief mention is made of such topics as the identification, 1noperties, occurrences, exploration, applications, technology and laboratory testing of this clay. In particular, the type of bentonite in demand, the geological horizons warranting exploration, and simple preliminary test methods are discussed.

"A combined shaft-electric furnace for the smelting of ores and the melting of metallized iron pellets is being developed. The materials are preheated, and in some cases pre-reduced, in the shaft before being transferred to the electric furnace, where melting or smelting is completed. It has been demonstrated that this combination of equipment will enable much of the relatively expensive electrical energy to be replaced by cheaper energy in the form of oil or natural gas, and preliminary experiments indicate that the total energy requirements for a melting or smelting operation are significantly reduced. Projections based on results obtained from the preliminary experiments indicate that further improvements will be possible when certain modifications to the equipment are completed."

In this paper, we review cases in which dramatic and visual swelling problems are experienced in underground structures. Swelling rocks have caused many problems in underground engineering projects. They pose severe problems to the design, construction and maintenance of underground openings. If an appropriate integrated design procedure, which proceeds from exploration, tests, analyses and realistic assumptions of swelling behavior, is used during the design stage, the execution of the project can be completed without any serious delays or dramatic design changes. The case histories were subdivided into three classes that include tunnels, underground coal mines and others. For the evaluation of cases, the surrounding rocks, swelling minerals, water inflow, swelling test results and swelling problems were considered. The main purpose of this review is to inform the reader about potential problems with swelling phenomenon and to emphasize the rehabilitation and extensive cost which are encountered due to the lack of necessary integrated design approaches.

The phase equilibria in the Mg-Al-Ca system was investigated experimentally by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques similarly the Mg-Al-Sr system has been studied using DSC and XRD as well as scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM/EDS) and quantitative electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA). A new ternary solid solution MgxAl4,xSr was confirmed in Mg-Al-Sr system, which is a substitutional solid solution of Mg atoms in Al4Sr. Maximum solubilities of 21.3 at.% Al in Mg17Sr2 and 11.4 at.% Al in Mg were observed. It was also noticed that Mg38Sr9 dissolved 12.5 at.% Al. In the Mg-Al-Ca ternary system, one of the invariant transformations predicted by thermodynamic modeling was verified experimentally and found to occur at 512°C with composition close to 10.8 at.% Ca, 79.5 at.% Mg and 9.7 at.% Al. A ternary solid solution (Mg,Al)2Ca was confirmed where large solid solubility of Al in Mg2Ca was observed.

"The property of Gaspe Copper Mines, Limited, is in the Gaspe Peninsula some 60 miles west of the town of Gaspe and 20 miles in from the north coast. The Copper Mountain deposit was first discovered in 1921 and first optioned and drilled by Noranda in 1938. The Upper Needle Mountain showings a mile south were found in 1938, but it was not until after a delay of 10 years that the more important deep ore at Needle Mountain was located by drilling. Production started in 1955, and the smelter commenced operation in December. Mining is by open stope methods with first production coming from the Lower Needle Mountain orebody, of which only a small portion has been exposed in underground openings.Stratigraphy and AlterationThe country rock is composed of limy siltstones of Devonian age. Away from alteration these are dark and generally carbonaceous. Throughout the drilled area numerous narrow layers of tuffaceous fragmental material occur, and such beds are found to provide excellent horizon markers by virtue of their uniform thickness and wide lateral distribution. These markers are valuable for stope control in mining the bedded replacement deposits.Intruding the sediments at Copper Mountain are porphyry dykes, and one drill hole encountered granite 1,400 feet below the valley. Solutions responsible for the rock alteration and ore deposits seem to have emanated from this intrusive centre.On the mine claims strong hydrothermal alteration has completely obscured the original character of the sediments. The unaltered formations are all very similar in appearance, but following alteration rocks that are very dissimilar in physical characteristics are produced, and such differences have an important influence on ore deposition. The alteration effects are known to extend over a vertical range in excess of 3,000 feet and have a surface area of two square miles. All known ore bodies are within the zone of alteration. In this, rocks are strikingly bleached to a white colour in contrast to the normal dark-coloured sediments, and are much harder and more abrasive, with bedding often obscured. The first effect of alteration is driving off of carbonaceous matter, followed progressively by silicification in the acid rocks and by the formation of lime silicates in the lime rocks, with an accompanying gain in silica and a corresponding loss in lime. Extensive analysis has shown that there is an actual addition of silica involved in the alteration."

The first paper presented on this work [1], showed how bath ratio was increased from 78% to over 95% using a structured approach to reduce bath chemistry variability. This update will illustrate the steps taken and update the results presented earlier, showing the effects of long power interruptions and several load reductions as well as load increase during the period from 1999 to 2005. Current efficiency was affected by such processes upset; however, bath ratio in range (±0.05) is still higher than 90%, even after an increment of more than 6 kA. This review will explain each of the steps taken to reach stability in this critical smelting parameter.

"IntroductionIn the mineral processing industry, certain minerals such as uranium, thorium and vanadium, etc., are selectively extracted with high degree of purity from solutions containing variety of other impurities by solvent extraction process. This separation process consists of bringing two immiscible or partially soluble liquid phases in contact, where mass transfer of one or more components takes place by ion exchange under certain controlling parameters such as pH, salt concentration and temperature. The processes taking place are primarily physical because the solutes being transferred are ordinarily recovered without chemical change. For efficient extraction more than one stage is required and the solutions are recycled counter currently through other stages. A multi-stage counter current solvent extraction plants essentially consist of four circuits namely: extraction, water wash, stripping, and solvent scrubbing. In extraction circuit the desired mineral is extracted at a certain pH from an aqueous solution onto an organic solvent by bringing them in contact with mixing in large mixer-settler units. The mixed solutions are allowed to settle and separate into component organic and aqueous phases in horizontal settlers by providing sufficient residence time. The solutions are then moved counter currently to other units- the aqueous from the underflow and the solvent organics from the overflow of the settler. The solution streams coming out of extraction circuit are loaded organics and barren aqueous or raffinate solution. The loaded organics are washed with water in a water wash circuit to remove transported impurities from extraction circuit. In the stripping circuit, the desired mineral is stripped selectively from the solvent phase back into an aqueous phase with a stripping agent at a selected pH. The solution stream leaving, stripping circuit are stripped organics and pregnant strip (aqueous) solution. The stripped organics are scrubbed off other loaded impurities with a conditioning solution in, scrubbing circuit and the cleaned solvent is re-used in the extraction circuit.A typical solvent extraction plant for uranium extraction and purification at Agnew Lake Mine is described in this chapter."

The Star Lake property, located 115 km northeast of La Ronge, Saskatchewan is underlain by metamorphosed andesitic tuffs and flows which have been intruded by the dioritic to granitic Star Lake Pluton. Gold mineralization on the Star Lake property was first discovered at Ru h Lake by E. Beveridge in 1959 and by M. and E. Hird in 1961. In 1960 E. Partridge discovered Kahn 18 and Kahn 28. In 1982 the SMDC-Starrex joint venture completed geophysical and geochemical urveys including magnetics, VLF, IP/Resistivity, vegetation, bulk till and oil sampling, followed by drill testing of pecific targets. To date the most ignificant depo it is the 21 Zone which contain drill indicated reserves of 230,000 tons grading 0.5 oz/ton Au . The 21 Zone con ists of quartz with 5-10% (locally > 30%) drusy pyrite, minor chalcopyrite and trace amounts of scheelite, chalcocite and arsenopyrite. The 21 Zone is enclosed by a 25-50 m wide band of mylonitized monzonite. The mylonite occurs in the central portion of a 300 m wide northeasterly trending zone of brittle deformation .

"Starting from fundamental principles of colloid-hydrodynamic theory of disperse systems we have shown that application of strongly non-uniform hydrodynamic fields allows to achieve not only faster rates of flocculation of suspension, but also supports significant improvements in the quality of clarified water and separation characteristics of solid phase. Specifically, it has been experimentally proven that the new treatment method based on these principles (then termed as ""ultra-flocculation"") allows:•,Increase the output of thickeners and pressure filters by 1,5-1,7 times;•,Decrease solids fall through into the filtrate in the process of vacuum filtration by 2¬3,5 times;•,Improve the rate of purification of water phase in the upright thickener by 1,5-1,9 times;•,Decrease flocculant consumption by 1,5-3 times;•,Increase the effective operational life time of cloth filters by 3-4 times;•,Ensure sustainable operation of separation equipment, i.e. decrease the sensitivity of process to variation in suspension concentration, as well as to variations of suspension composition and dispersion characteristics;•,Apply flocculant solutions of concentration 2-3 times higher, thus increasing the capacity of equipment used for solutions preparation."

"Most of the recent large discoveries of zinc, lead and silver in Western Canada are Paleozoic-aged stratiform deposits that occur within the limits of the tectonic sub-province of the Canadian Cordillera known as Selwyn Basin. Bounded on either side by coeval carbonate platforms. Selwyn Basin trends northwest for 1300 km from northeast British Columbia to Alaska. Paleozoic rocks of Selwyn Basin consist primarily of chert, shale and coarser-grained clastic sedimentary rocks with minor volcanic rocks.The Selwyn Basin deposits have few counterparts elsewhere in Canada, but have a close similarity in geological setting, mineralogy and morphology to well-known deposits such as McArthur (HYC) in Australia, Meggen and Rammelsberg in West Germany, and Sullivan in British Columbia. Recent studies of these deposits have led to an emerging, but now generally accepted, model of ore deposition in which stratabound zinc-lead-silver shale-hosted or ""sedimentary-exhalative"" (sedex) deposits are precipitated in active tectonic environments from metalliferous geothermal brines that rise to the sea floor along deep-seated fault zones. Although their mineralogy and ore metal zoning can be similar to that of volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, most sedex deposits have only a weak genetic link with volcanism.Sedex mineralization in Selwyn Basin has been identified within three separate ages of shale or its metamorphosed equivalent. The lower Cambrian-age Anvil Camp in central Yukon Territory contains the only producing mine (Faro). Important lower Silurian-age zinc-lead mineralization is at Howards Pass along the Yukon - Northwest Territories border. Barite and zinc-lead-barite mineralization of upper Devonian age occurs across Selwyn Basin. Potentially economic deposits have been found at Macmillan Pass, along the Yukon - Northwest Territories border and in the Gataga District of northeastern British Columbia."

"Zinc has been used for many years as a galvanic coating for the protection of steel. Electrochemical measurements show that zinc actually overprotects steel. The corrosion rate of DQSK (drawing quality semi-killed) steel in air saturated salt water was determined as a Junction of applied cathodic potential. The resulting data indicate that at a critical cathodic over potential of - O. 725 Vsce an acceptably low corrosion rate of less than 1 mpy occurs. Using the developed criterion, alloys of Zn/X and AL/X were produced and evaluated in galvanic contact with steel in a standard laboratory test. The results indicate that Zn /Mn, Zn /Co, AI/Mg/Si and AI/Mg/Ge alloys offer excellent galvanic protection along with (a) no hydrogen evolution, and (b) improved dissolution life over Zn coatings.IntroductionZinc coated (galvanized) steel has been successfully used in applications where bare (or painted non-galvanized) steel would suffer corrosive attack. In general, galvanic coupling to zinc, as either an anode or a coating, is an effective means for combatting steel corrosion. Because of this, the use of galvanized steel has increased markedly, stimulated primarily by automobile manufacurers seeking to extend the corrosion warranties on automobiles(1).Although effective, zinc coatings are not without a number of drawbacks which warrant efforts to improve them. For example, because of the widely differing electrode potentials between zinc and steel ( - 1.05 Vsce and - 0.60 Vscc, respectively, in air saturated NaCl solutions), the zinc corrodes at a rapid rate to protect the steel. This is reflected in the limited lifetimes of galvanized unpainted siding. The basic electrochemistry controlling the situation is shown in Figure 1, for a system controlled by oxygen reduction. The zinc corrodes sacrificially to protect the steel, while cathodically polarizing the steel to a potential near that of zinc's open circuit anode potential."

This paper discusses an ongoing field study in southern Illinois (USA) that focuses on: 1) Identifying mechanisms of instability in the set-up rooms (SR) and their T-junctions with headgate and tailgate entries, 2) Developing alternate 3-entry and 4-entry set-up rooms geometry using 3-D numerical analyses, 3) Implementing developed geometries in cooperation with mining professionals and regulatory agencies, and 4) Demonstrating performance of implemented geometries through field monitoring. Illinois longwall mining operations typically experience ground control problems (roof falls, rib sloughing, floor heave, etc.) within SR layouts and around the T-junctions of SR. These occur around the areas where the SR for adjacent longwall face (to be mined) connect with the SR of the previously mined face, and around the tail-gate entries of the mined-out longwall face and around the T-junctions of SR. The problems manifest as highly fractured immediate roof strata, major shear zones in the roof, horizontal displacements within the excavations that result in shearing off the heads of the bolts, floor heave and severe rib sloughing. Similar observations have also been made in longwall mining in Utah.

Synopsis The colour changes effected in a solution of dithizone by trace amounts of copper, lead, and zinc mineralization provide a sensitive field test for these metals. The method has been used with success by the United States Geological Survey to trace zinc orebodies under residual soils. The dithizone test is used here on samples of non-residual soil overlying a gold-bearing zone in which the gold is associated with disseminated sphalerite, galena, and chalco-pyrite. A gold-bearing zone was successfully traced under overburden ranging from a few inches to five feet in depth by means of this method. The method may prove useful in guiding preliminary trenching through light overburden, by outlining the extent of copper, lead, and zinc mineralization. Introduction The dithizone test affords a rapid, simple, and delicate test for the presence of zinc in soil and water and is suitable for use under field conditions. It has recently been used with success by the United States Geological Survey to outline a zinc-rich area in the residual soil over a primary zinc deposit in Tennessee. The purpose of the present study was to ascertain whether the method could be used to trace a gold-bearing zone, containing associated zinc mineralization, under shallow, non-residual, glacial overburden. The results obtained indicate that the method can be used to guide preliminary trenching in overburden up to six feet in depth. Tests made of the water near lake-shore outcrops also indicate that favourable prospecting zones may be located from the water, within five feet of the shore. It is felt that this simple field test should find a wider use in prospecting, because, under certain conditions, it can outline favourable zones and thereby reduce the amount of blind trenching necessary. The following pages describe the type of deposit tested, the method used, the .results obtained, and the difficulties encountered by a novice in the use of this chemical procedure. Traditional planning methods such as CPM and PERT have been useful tools to manage construction projects. However, the underlying model of these traditional methods often seems to fail to represent real projects as they tend to assume no interrelationship between project components. In reality, project components have complex dynamic feedback process that requires modeling of inherent uncertainty in the execution of these projects. Nevertheless, this dynamic nature and uncertainty have not been explicitly addressed by traditional planning methods. Project failure can be attributed to poor representation of the inner and outer aspects of operations that are responsible for project dynamics. Uncontrollable external forces are often cited but the real cause may be internal such as the feedback process among components of the project. An alternative perspective is offered in this paper through system dynamics (SD) that accounts for the feedback process and discrete event simulation (DES) for modeling the uncertainty. The proposed method utilizes SD method for modeling project dynamics and DES method coupled with CPM network for operational details and uncertainty, respectively. A case study that involves preparing engineering drawings in a design office is used to demonstrate the use of the developed method and to highlight its capabilities. Modeling the dynamic dimension is expected to enhance planning and scheduling of construction operations and to provide a better understanding of the impact of various internal and external factors on project schedule and productivity performance.
