"Performance management is a systematic, practical approach to managing people. It is founded on some basic assumptions about people and is designed to focus on people in the work place. Organizing meaningful information and using it to involve people is a cornerstone of this system.Some common sense practices are developed to involve people in an organization's effort to improve performance. The successful implementation of this program requires solid commitment and total involvement from all levels of supervision and employees for maximum results and lasting impact. All levels of supervision participate in training sessions to tailor the systems for implementation in their areas. This style of management is data-oriented and the bottom line of success is to measurably improve performance. Basic Assumptions about PeopleMost people in an organization, regardless of level, take pride in their work and generally want to do a good job. When performance falls off, there is usually some explanation other than the employee not really caring. People like to know their exact responsibilities and clearly what is expected of them. People like to know where they stand with the boss and would like to be evaluated on what they do and accomplish, rather than on what others think or feel about them. Further, people like to be rewarded for their good results, indeed, to understand what motivates people, we must look at what happens as a result of their actions. Another belief is that supervisors often have a greater influence on the performance of their people than they fully realize. Simply letting people know how important their performance is can have an impact. Whatever your opinion of the validity of the scientific case for global warming, or of the wisdom of the Kyoto Protocol, it would seem judicious to err on the side of caution and try to sensibly minimize global climate change. To this end, we should take prudent steps to minimize our emission of greenhouse gases. Cameco is the world's leading supplier of uranium for use as fuel in nuclear power plants. As Mr. Lundberg has already ably covered the theory of various methods of electrical prospecting, I shall confine my remarks to a consideration of the features which must obtain in an electrical prospecting method in order that it may be useful from a practical standpoint. These remarks I shall make with particular reference to the Elbof method. The successful application of all these methods rests, in the first place, upon the possibility of correlating theory, or empirically established facts, with the field data. Their practical usefulness, however, requires that the technique of making the field observations, and the procedure itself, be such that the method may be applied to large areas, under normal average conditions. The method, therefore, should not involve excessive preliminary labour costs to prepare the ground for actual prospecting work, nor should the prospecting work itself be so slow that its cost, when applied to extensive areas, becomes prohibitive. Moreover, it should be possible to apply the method even under difficult terrain conditions, such as rough topography and dense vegetation. It may be said of most of the methods referred to in the preceding paper, that, while they are interesting and theoretically sound, they fail to meet such practical requirements as I have outlined.

Strips of AA6111 automotive alloy were cast on a horizontal single belt strip casting simulator, Pure copper and carbon steels substrates plasma sprayed with different coatings for improving the strip surface quality, were used as chill moulds, Experimental studies revealed that a graphite coating provided the greatest benefit in achieving good surface quality. The interfacial heat fluxes during solidification of AA6111 strip were calculated by the IHCP method (Inverse Heat Conduction Problem). Temperature variations and cooling rates within the strips were then calculated through numerical simulations based on the time-dependent heat fluxes obtained by IHCP, The effects of casting parameters, including casting temperature and strip thickness, on interfacial heat fluxes, cooling rates and microstructures, were investigated, Although the maximum interfacial heat fluxes on the chill copper substrate were much higher than the results obtained from the steel substrates, the solidification times of the melts were mainly determined by strip thickness. Very fine equi-axed grains were obtained for both 1.2mm and 2.5mm thick strips thanks to the rapid extraction of heat, and effective grain refinement.

"Geological data, production trends and current projects underway suggest that enough molybdenum will be available from more diversified sources to meet the world's growing demands. The growth in molybdenum consumption has been primarily related to its beneficial effects as an alloying agent in steel. This rapid growth has been deliberately fostered by stable prices, adequate supply and application research. The molybdenum industry is now in a process of change which has been seen in several other metals, such as aluminum and nickel. As supply sources have become more diversified, the market has become more competitive. The recent drop in consumption has led to excess production capacity, accumulation of substantial producer inventories and increased market uncertainties. While consumption is expected to increase in the next two to three years, it will take some time to absorb the excess capacity and inventory. The increased proportion of by-product capacity indicates that prices may become more variable. Producer discipline will be required to prevent serious price erosion in times of surplus. Future prices may not continue to increase with inflation. For the longer term, several factors favour the increased consumption of molybdenum. Engineering requirements are becoming more severe and molybdenum alloys can help to meet these changing needs. In addition, consumers can rely on a large and increasing supply of molybdenum. A 7 per cent growth rate in consumption can probably be sustained through the next decade, but new applications and reasonably stable prices will be needed to make this possible."

"This preliminary paper provides a summary of lab and mill flotation investigations into the copper collector at two Canadian operations. The orebodies illustrated in these studies both contain mainly copper and zinc with uneconomic quantities of lead. Silver is also present as a secondary precious metal.Each mill has advanced to the extended mill trial stage with Uniflot SP129 as the sole copper collector. The preliminary metallurgical results have indicated higher copper circuit zinc and lead rejection is possible as shown in Case Study #2. In Case Study #1, improved zinc circuit metallurgy has been realized during all the Uniflot copper circuit collector trials. A slight increase in silver recovery has also been observed in the extended trials at both operations. INTRODUCTIONThe Canadian base metal industry is presently going through a rationalization period in response to low metal prices and low grade ore bodies. The response from flotation mills has been to reduce costs by incorporating new technologies such as energy efficient large cells, low moisture pressure filters and low steel consumption SAG mills. Other optimization strategies have been incorporated to get better metallurgical performance such as improved process control and monitoring techniques.The newer flotation plants have embraced many of the latest equipment innovations but they continue to incorporate off-the shelf reagents like xanthate and methylisobutylcarbinol (MIBC) . New collector chemistries have been mostly unsuccessful. Our approach incorporates the best of the old and new chemistry into proprietary formulations that match the application. We have found most single chemical formulations cannot meet the demands of the optimized modern flotation plant."

"The fine fraction of tailings is usually excluded from the backfill process and generally disposed on the surface in tailings ponds. Because of the ever increasing demand for fine grinding in the extraction process for improved liberation of valuables in the ore, increased production of fines in the tailings has resulted. The negative impact of surface impoundment of tailings on the environment is well known. Amaratunga and Annor (1989) first presented a concept of fine tailings agglomeration for backfill.This paper presents the development of the novel cold-bond tailings agglomeration (CBTA) technology for non-reactive fine gold mill tailings. For cold-bond agglomeration regular portland cement was used as a binder. In order to cut costs, alternate binders such as lime, and blast furnace slag cement were examined. The effects of binder dosage, curing time, and agglomerate size on the fracture load strength of the agglomerate were studied.Fine tailings agglomerates are mixed with coarse tailings or non-agglomerated fine tailings to make high density fill compositions to be used as underground backfill. Alternatively, the agglomerates can be used as aggregates for surface applications. The paper discusses the environmental and operational benefits of this total tailings utilization and disposal technology.IntroductionIn Canadian mines, mill tailings are probably the most commonly used material for backfill. However, only the coarse fraction of tailings is desirable for use as hydraulic fill or high density fills. The fines are disposed on the surface in tailings ponds since they are unsuitable for underground backfilling owing to the following factors:i) slow settling ratesii) longer percolation timeiii) excessive consumption of binder due to drainageiv) poor compactionFor improved value liberation more milling operations have resolved to fine grinding in their comminution circuits. Gold milling operations driven by down stream leaching processes grind their ores excessively fine. In general, gold mines use hardly any tailings for backfilling. This can result in periodic short falls and the need to search for alternate backfill material from other sources. Apparently, the gold producers are the most identifiable sector which suffer from a shortage of backfill materials ( Amaratunga and Annor, 1989)."

"Permanent magnets have been applied extensively to several electronic products such as printers, TV sets, microphones, microcomputers and headphones, presently manufactured in large scale by industrial economies. Sm-Co alloys represent about 20% of the world market for permanent magnets and their industrial processors generate 20-30% of magnetic scraps which can be recycled. This paper discusses a process route to recycle SmCo5 using acid treatment, solvent extraction of Sm and electrowinning of Co. The results confirm the feasibility of the alternative proposed. Basic operational variables are suggested as guidelines to design a plant for recycling magnetic scraps.The use of hydrometallurgical processes to recycle scraps from the industry of permanent magnets has been suggested in some recent papers related to recycling of metallic alloys [ 1 ]. These research efforts might be understood as a worldwide tendency towards the development of self sustainable metallurgical processes which mean the reduction of environmental impacts.CETEM -Center for Mineral Technology leads in Brazil several research programs concerning recycling and treatment of industrial residues. The work on samarium purification and concentration by solvent extraction, producing also a solution of cobalt sulfate as partially reported here is one of these programs. Previous results related to the sulfuric acid digestion of SmCo5 are presented somewhere else [2]"

"Recent trends in Canadian mineral processing were reported in seven areas of interest covered by seventeen technical papers at the 1976 Annual Meeting of the Canadian Mineral Processors, held at Energy, Mines and Resources' Camsell Hall, Ottawa. New milling equipment included the Enviro-Clear thickener, large-volume Outokumpu flotation machines and abrasion-resistant polyurethane screens. Grinding experiences from a variety of milling operations were reported. Opportunities for increased sizing and grinding efficiency were presented. Flotation control by digital computer and by chemical additions were described in two mill operations. Slurry pumping and sampling techniques were described for various operations. Environmental control in milling was reported concerning dust suppression, arsenic removal and tailings disposal. Several aspects of gold milling were described by the most recently commissioned gold mine and by CANMET. Potash operations were reported showing the similarity of processing and process control to that of metallic minerals."

"Pamour Porcupine Mines, Limited is involved in the mining, milling and primary refining of various gold, gold - copper and refractory gold ores. Pamour operates five mines in the Porcupine Mining District of Ontario, and two 2,550 t/d milling facilities.Both metallurgical facilities use conventional cyanidation technology including zinc cementation for precipitation of gold and silver from solution. The precipitation process, as applied to clarified leach solutions (less than 1 ppm suspended solids) at Pamour is called the Merrill - Crowe process. Precipitates from both milling operations are treated at Pamour's Area Refinery. Schumacher precipitates, unlike Pamour No. 1, require an ''Acid Treatment Stage"" prior to refining to remove the high contained copper. This is accomplished by leaching the precipitates initiallv with sulphuric acid to remove zinc and then with sulphuric acid and manganese dioxide to dissolve copper. Refining procedures after ''Acid Treatment"" are essentially the same for both precipitates.The following considerations highlight the basic principals applied to refining cyanidation precipitates at Pamour, including:"

The recent trend in underground mine developments is “bigger is better.” This is most certainly evident in the mine shaft and conveyances that operate within its compartments. Today, there are several new installations requiring mine cages that can transport up to 170 passengers. The technology in mine hoisting is advancing to address a combination of higher capacity requirements, deeper hoisting depths and faster winding rates, however, some areas of the hoist plant have not changed in the past 50 years. The most notable of these areas is the shaft compartment guide string and the conveyance mounted safety arrest mechanism. The technology in use today for the protection of passengers in a shaft conveyance from a hoist rope severance incident remains conceptually unchanged from Elisha Otis’ design of 1850. The actual retardation components, the safety dogs, have taken on several forms since Elisha’s invention with the last major design change occurring in the late 1940s. The arrest of a free falling shaft conveyance requires that the shaft guides withstand the energy imparted on them by the safety dogs. There are some very real limitations presented by the use of wood for this application. The new hoisting era will most certainly continue to demand larger capacity equipment, but also an increased awareness toward safety

Exploitée à partir de 1974, elle a déjà produit près de 30 tonnes d’or à partir de 2 puits, le puits Eagle et le puits Telbel, distants de 1,3 km.Le gisement est situé entre le sommet du complexe volcanique de Joutel, à dominante felsique, et la base de l'ensemble sédimentaire de la rivière Harricana. Ces deux unités ont une extension régionale; elles sont orientées NW-SE avec une polarité NE et des pendages subverticaux. Une faille majeure, la faille Harricana, passe de façon subconcordante au contact de ces deux ensembles.La minéralisation aurifère, de 2 à 5 m d’épaisseur moyenne, est liée a une zone carbonatée, comprise entre des tufs felsiques, argilites et sédiments chimiques (éponte inferieure) et des argilites carbonatées (éponte supérieure). Le minerai est constitué habituellement de 20% de fine pyrite disséminée. L’or est en fines particules associées directement à ces grains de pyrite de texture cataclastique.Deux modelés ont été for mules jusqu' a présent pour expliquer la genèse du gisement: une thèse syngenetique (Barnett et a/.1982) et une thèse épigénétique (Wyman et al. 1986). Cette dernière apparalt comme la plus probable du fait de la présence de la minéralisation dans les zones cisaillées a carbonates secondaires et pyrite cataclastique."

While the markets served by Canadian coal producers have changed and buying practices continue to evolve, the coal mining, or supply side, has also changed remarkably in response and now provides the basis for an interesting industry story.The dynamic situation in coal mining has led to some surprising outcomes and seemingly contradictory developments. This paper outlines the changes that have occurred, and which are still unfolding in Canadian coal mining, firstly, in terms of mining technology and productivity, secondly, in terms of corporate divestments, acquisitions and bankruptcies, and finally, in terms of resource development. The paper also outlines some plausible futures for the industry looking ahead."

Introduction During the economic investigation of Pacific Great Eastern Railway subsidy lands, the P.G.E. Survey of Resources made a geological and mineral survey of a large part of the valley of the Peace river as included in the Province of British Columbia. The immediate valley of the Peace river was surveyed from the mountains to the Alberta boundary; the valley of the Pine river was surveyed throughout; and the Dominion block, 70 miles square and lying astride the Peace river, westward from the Alberta boundary, was very carefully surveyed. The writer was in general charge of the field work, and spent half the field season of 1929 and the field season of 1930 in the region . J. B. Bocock, however, did the major part of the work, spending two seasons, 1929 and 1930, in the area. General Conclusions The rock formations within the area discussed are all sedimentary and range in age from pre-Cambrian to recent. As might be expected, the minerals are in the main non-metallic, coal being by far the most important. Favourable conditions exist for natural gas occurrence, and suitable structures for petroleum concentration occur, although the high carbon ratio of the coals sheds considerable doubt upon the actual occurrence of oil in the area. Materials of minor interest are ochre, calcareous tufa, marl, limonite, gravel, and building stone.

GOLD mining in Nova Scotia, as in any other gold district, has its own peculiar problems. Being in close proximity to excellent roads and to railways, and being blessed with good labour, the majority of gold mines in the Province find their paramount trouble is geological, namely, ore finding. After six years of continuous mining at Goldenville, the staff of Guysborough Mines, Limited, has collected many facts, has come to some definite conclusions, and has made a lot of guesses, some good and some bad. It is the purpose of this paper to set down such information as we have been able to gain in the hope that it may prove useful to other operators, present and future, faced with similar problems. What may be true of one Nova Scotian mine will not necessarily be true of another, so that the observations that follow should be considered as primarily applicable to Goldenville. Stated facts, conclusions, and theories are the result of the combined thought and effort of Head Office officials, of members of the Provincial and Federal Departments of Mines, and of members of the mine staff, past and present. Refractory ores with gold entrapped in a sulfide matrix, must be processed in a first stage with chemical or physical treatment in order to liberate the gold for a subsequent step with cyanide. The goal of this research was to compare the refractory behavior of a gold concentrate treated using two pretreatment methods: pressure oxidation and fine grinding. Gold concentrate from Viacha Mining in Bolivia, assaying 50.11 gpt, with a P80 of 131 ?m was used. The concentrate contains arsenopyrite and pyrite as main sulphides in the matrix. A preliminary test with cyanide resulted only 13.5% of gold extraction with 4 hours of stirred leaching. Using an autoclave oxidation with sulphuric acid and 12 bar oxygen pressure at 220°C pretreatment, the cyanide gold extraction increased to 69.0% in 4 hours. When material was ground in a pulverizer, producing a P80 of 20 ?m and the product directly cyanided, stirred leaching gave a gold extraction of 65% in 4 hours. For both techniques, the effect of temperature, sulfur produced in autoclave oxidation, optimization of the cyanide and the nature of residues were also studied.

A survey of the literature reveals wide differences in the procedures used in making iron ore pellets and in the properties of the pellets obtained. In this paper, the methods of production and the properties of pellets, as reported in the literature, are examined in an effort to determine what correlations exist between them. An attempt is also made to determine the levels of the properties of pellets which are considered acceptable and desirable in modern practice. M UCH has been written regarding the important changes which have been taking place recently in the iron ore industry. As the demand for ore has increased and the supply of direct-shipping ore has dwindled, tl1e problems associated with the utilization of lower grade ores ha\•e been intensely investigated and important advances in both beneficiation and agglomeration techniques have taken place. In particular, there has been a great deal of activity in connection with the pelletizing method of agglomeration. Cominco began investigations about ten years ago relative to noise abatement in underground operations. As a result of intensive research, this study has advanced so that the practice now has wide application. Automotive mufflers are used on vane-type blasthole diamond drills. Exhaust hoses are attached to longhole percussion drills. Hand-held drills, such as airlegs and stopers, are equipped with mufflers which are either part of the drill, as received from the manufacturer, or are light rubber de-vices developed, fabricated and installed by Cominco. Ear defenders are in general use. The paper reviews details of practices employed, and assesses the success achieved. Noise is generally associated with some of the basic equipment used in mining. About ten years ago, in order to improve on this situation. The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited began investigations relative to noise abatement in its underground operations. As a result of intensive research, this study has advanced to the point
