An extended Kalman Filter is used to build an on-line estimator of total ore, fine ore and water hold-ups in a SAG mill. In addition, an equivalent grinding rate from coarse to fine ore, as well as the discharge rates of solids (fines) and water are also estimated as part of the adaptation procedure of the model used for the Kalman Filter. The measurements used in the Kalman Filter estimator are the total mill weight provided by load cells, and inferred discharge flows of fines and water from flow and density measurements performed downstream. The net ore and water feed to the SAG mill are used as inputs to the estimator, and also the proportion of fine ore in the feed. As an example of how to introduce robustness in the estimation in the face of sensor bias errors, an estimation of the load cell bias error is introduced in the estimator, thus providing self calibration. The estimator presented in this paper has been tested by simulation using a detailed SAG mill mechanistic dynamic model comprising 27 size fractions well fitted to a pilot mill. The maximum error in the estimation of the operational variables - total and fine ore as well as the mill contents under different operating conditions - is about ten per cent.

This paper provides a brief fundamental insight regarding the fabric media concept for liquor filtration. The subject matter will be of interest to metallurgists and engineers with professional responsibility for world class design of solid liquid separation processes and efficient lowest cost operation of existing mineral process plant. Avocet Mining commissioned the worldÆs first mineral liquor clarification process incorporating a fabric media liquor filter at their Lanut gold mine in Sulawesi, in 2004 with design consulting provided by the Australian company SLS Technology Pty Ltd. Development of the technology continues with applied research focused on selecting textile parameters to apply filtration to a wider range of particle and contaminant types, higher solids concentrations, and different process liquors. Liquor filtration with the Fabric Media technology offers an array of attractive benefits. For Avocet Mining, filtration of pregnant liquor directly from the heap leach pad has enabled removal of the sediment pond and sand filters from the traditional process flow sheet, thus providing significant cost and installation time savings. Avocet Mining has recently expressed confidence in the technology indicating selection preference of the technology for the expansion at Lanut and for a new project. The application design window for the Fabric Media concept is extremely flexible with the technology now successfully applied to many different liquor chemistries and application objectives around the world. Potential cost savings for solid liquid separation process plant, such as counter current decantation circuits, clarifier vessels and thickener tanks can be calculated from laboratory measurements or pilot plant demonstrations.

Drilling and blasting practices at Groote Eylandt are undergoing a period of rapid change. Practices over the last ten years are reviewed and some specific blasting problems currently being faced are described. A move from percussion to rotary drilling is outlined, together with the reasoning behind a proposed return to ANFO from watergel explosives. A brief outline of the various firing patterns used is given, together with a description of the drilling and blasting recording procedures currently in use. Current and planned developments in drilling and blasting at Groote Eylandt are also outlined, emphasizing the success of wide patterns, fired in line with long inter-row delays.

IT is generally accepted that for transport of coal underground from different collecting stations, the system of endless rope haulage with remote control is not only one of the safest and most economIcal, but is also one of the most'efficlent in dealing with output.When the coal measures lie in regular planes, the work of laying down such a haulage presents no difficulties. When, however, the dip of the measures is Irregular, or dislocated by faulting, the management is faced with the problem of constructing vertical curves of such a radius that the sag of the rope will correspond with the road bed, and thus obviate the danger of the rope rising and throwing the skips off the track.The direction of the main roads for haulage purposes being ascertained from the plan of the royalty to be worked, the faults or dislocations in the seam are determined for these roads with the greatest possible accuracy by means of bore holes from the surface.From the data thus obtained the haulage road can generally be so graded that the rope will keep on the floor during haulage operations, although the grades may in places be synclinal.The writer confesses that he knows of no accurate formula for calculating the sag of the rope under varying tensions and so determining the safe radius of the curve, and he had to depend upon past experiences under somewhat sImilar conditions.The accompanying sections illustrate a case where the writer has recently installed an endless rope underground approximately 5000 ft. in length, from the foot of a tunnel in which an endless rope delivers the output to the screening plant, and having to negotiate, first a 400-ft. downthrow fault, and later a 32 ft. upthrow.

Welcome to the morning of the second day of Minval '89. There are some three hundred and fifty of us here today. That represents certainly the most influential gathering of the mining and investment community in Sydney for a very long time, and on behalf of the Institute I bid you all a very great welcome. Due to the pilots' strike some of you have arrived by very unusual methods and others have travelled long distances. So for those of you that have made a special effort, thank you very much. Inevitably some people have not been able to get to Sydney and this has led to some minor programme changes. I'd like to thank our sponsors. One of the major impacts of using modern mechanised systems of mining is the production of large amounts of extraneous dirt intermixed with the Run of Mine output. The paper out- lines a proposed system of utilizing liquid tailings from coal mines to replace imported cementitious materials used in ground control and various other safety measures. A geotech- nical and cost assessment of the proposed system are also included. The paper concludes that it is possible to utilize processed tailings to cost effectively replace imported packing material for ground control.

A commercial scale strong acid leaching plant was commissioned at the Risdon plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited, a member of the Pasminco group of companies, in February 1988. It was designed to upgrade the lead/silver residue product from 26% to 37% lead, thus improving the realised value and increasing overall zinc recovery. This in turn enables the lead smelter treating the lead residue to improve its productivity. The equipment consists of two 250m3 bricklined leach tanks and two 6.5m diameter stainless steel high rate thickeners operating with counter current washing at 95¦C and 120 g/L H2SO4. The present filtration and drying equipment is also being replaced. Two 35m2 squeeze action filter presses equipped with horizontal plates are being installed, together with ancillary drying equipment to ensure that the final product complies with the transportable moisture limit. The new filtration plant is due to be commissioned in mid-1989.

The magnesite deposits near Young, N.S.W., occur in decomposed serpentine rock below a soil. and alluvial cover. They show considerable variation in both quality and depth which greatly hampers mining operations. Seismic refraction techniques afford methods of conducting detailed and reconnaissance surveys which yield a depth and velocity analysis of the serpentine/magnesite refractor. The measured seismic velocities may be used as an index of the presence and quality of the deposits. The Seismic Timer which was used in the test surveys is a simplified seismograph which makes use of seismic reciprocity by replacing the conventional seismic shotpoints with geophone stations and the conventional geophone stations with impact points of a sledge hammer. Thi,s enables the use of detailed seismic refraction techniques which yield the depth and velocity analysis of the refractor.INTRODUCTIONThe magnesite deposits near Young, N.S.W., were produced by a process of leaching and enrichment of magnesium in serpentine rock. The magnesite occurs in nodular form emplaced in decomposed rock at shallow depths below soil and alluvium. The depth ranges from close to the surface down to some tens of feet. The deposits are patchy and show considerable variation in both quality and depth, giving riseto considerable difficulties in mining operations.Due to the thorough leaching of the surface material, geochemical tests carried out so far have not proved satisfactory for locating the pockets of magnesite enrichment.It was decided to test the application of detailed shallow seismic refraction methods to the investigation of both the depth and quality of the deposits. The spatial distribution of ore with similar processing properties or domains within an orebody may be identified early in the assessment of an orebody to provide a sound basis for later development of the orebody. The assignment of domains in the primary sulfide portion of an orebody is often more difficult than recognition of the oxidised, supergene and related domains usually located towards the top of the mineralised volume. This paper will discuss some approaches to assigning domains within the primary sulfide portion of an orebody. The processing properties of each mining block will be known if the contained domain(s) and their proportions are known. The use of both physical and chemical ore properties to assign the domains is discussed. The domains based on similar processing properties do not necessarily coincide with geological zones assigned by geoscientists. As part of assessing the physical properties of ore, the modal analysis of the ore with respect to the valuable sulfide minerals and the sulfide and non sulfide gangue minerals has to be known, along with the traditionally used elemental assays for valuable and penalty elements. Two scales for determining other physical ore properties will be considered: the mesoscopic scale (examined by human eye) and the microscopic scale (examined via a microscope under high magnification). The strengths and weaknesses of the data obtained at the two scales are discussed in the paper. Broadly, data collected at the mesoscopic scale are much less expensive but the types of data available are more limited. Methods for evaluation of chemical ore properties are also discussed. After establishing a basis for establishing the spatial distribution of domains, variability testing is required to verify the integrity of the designated domains. In contrast, each block of ore in some orebodies has been assessed principally via the results of a laboratory separation on a number of drill core samples or composites from throughout the block, with minimal or no attention to the concept of domains.

Production of refined zinc (99.95 per cent) at the minesite without increasing greenhouse gas emissions is considered. As an example, exploitation of the full reserve of the McArthur River orebody is proposed, using the existing concentrator, whilst introducing radically innovative smelting technology. Bulk flotation of all the sulphide minerals is followed by smelting in a melt circulation reactor with tonnage oxygen. By smelting the high-energy pyritic concentrate and reacting the evolved sulphur dioxide with near-mine dolomite, a large amount of electricity can be generated. This is enough to supply all the requirements for the smelter itself, an air separation plant and a facility for compressing and liquefying carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is disposed of off-shore for enhanced oil recovery or by other means. The reacted dolomite fixes sulphur as an inert and environmentally acceptable solid residue. Treatment by these means leads to virtually zero gas emission smelting. The paper concludes with a vision for the future in which expansion of zinc smelting capacity is seen to be definitely needed.

Since 1989 Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines has managed the Kalgoorlie gold operations of joint venture partners Normandy Mining Ltd and Homestake Gold of Australia Ltd. Current production from the Fimiston Open Pit is approximately 650 000 ounces per annum. The mine incorporates a multitude of narrow shear hosted, subvertical lodes, predominantly within Golden Mile Dolerite. Traditionally KCGM has used blasthole based grade control in the Fimiston pits. A single sample is taken from vertical production blastholes, drilled on ten metre benches. This process was improved with the addition of infill drilling along blasthole rows to provide additional samples across strike. However the limitations of adequately defining subvertical mineralised structures with vertical blastholes remain. In 1997 the first of two trial areas were drilled with close spaced, inclined Reverse Circulation (RC) drilling. These tests indicated that RC based grade control had the potential to provide significant advantages. These include:improved delineation of mineralised structures, particularly across strike; reliable short-term mine schedules based on the advance data available from drilling over three benches; and the angled RC drilling is capable of providing samples of near stope and stope fill material which often remains unsampled by blasthole drills due to the safety constraints around unstable underground openings. Based on the success of this initial work RC based grade control was gradually implemented across production areas commencing September 1998. Some of the many challenges faced include:development of effective procedures and systems for the planning, logging, interpretation and modelling of the RC data; obtaining adequate drill coverage due to mine scheduling constraints and restricted access around underground openings; requirement for integrated systems to handle either blast hole or RC data; and development of effective methods to evaluate the performance of RC grade control. RC based grade control is delivering significantly improved lode definition, grade estimation and subsequent ore classification.

A numerical model of the spontaneous combustion of coal has been developed and is being used to investigate the nature of self-heating in underground coal mines. Results to date confirm the complexity of the self-heating reaction in coal and illustrate the impact of the factors such as the coal reactivity, mass and airflow through the coal pile. Subtle differences in the chemical, physical and environmental conditions and make a significant difference in the development of a high temperature self-heating or a low temperature benign condition, the subtlety escaping normal underground observations. Additional work is planned to investigate the thresholds for such factors in the development of spontaneous combustion and it the implications for detection by gaseous Products.

As copper reserves deepen, they are becoming increasingly less pure. Penalty elements such as arsenic, antimony and bismuth are occurring in increasing concentrations. Environmental issues with smelters are leading to increases in penalty rates for these elements such that some concentrates may become difficult to sell. Arsenic concentration in Rosebery copper concentrates during 2010 varied between 3000 and 8500 ppm. Arsenic levels above 5000 ppm can preclude import to some customer countries. Optical mineralogy has indicated that arsenic in Rosebery copper concentrates is most commonly associated with tennantite (Cu12As4S13) in solid solution with tetrahedrite (Cu12As4S13). In addition, silver reports to concentrate as freibergite (Cu12As4S13 ). A reduction in arsenic content will therefore lead to a concurrent reduction in the silver content.A literature review by Long, Peng and Bradshaw (2012) indicated that arsenic bearing minerals could be removed using potential controlled flotation. Some success in reducing the amount of arsenic had also been reported using either roasting or chemical depression using reagents such as lime and cyanide. Due to the location of the Rosebery concentrator adjacent to world heritage listed temperate rainforest, the use of a roaster or cyanide was immediately discounted. Lime is already used as a reagent in the Rosebery flow sheet, so could be considered as a potential arsenic depressant.In order to determine a method of separating out the high arsenic bearing minerals, two series of flotation tests were conducted. The first series investigated the effect of pulp potential on the recovery of copper, silver and arsenic minerals; a second series investigated the effect of pH, froth depth and regrind.CITATION:Long, G, Peng, Y and Bradshaw, D J, 2012. Australian wheat belt agriculture is causing a decline of its natural resource base. The major problem, salinity, arises from a small reduction in water consumption by agricultural crops compared to what prevailed under the prior native vegetation. This causes groundwater accumulation which, in the low relief landscapes of the wheat belt, is leading to extensive surface saturation in low landscape positions and dramatic, destructive change in the hydrological behaviour and habitat of streams and rivers. The ability of agriculture to invest in salinity control is severely limited by its long-term decline in its terms of trade. Extensive planting of perennial vegetation has the potential to increase water use and arrest the salinisation process. If these perennials were also commercially attractive, the cost of salinity treatment could be minimised. Given the difficult commercial position of food commodities, it is logical to develop ænon-foodÆ perennial crops, in particular woody crops suitable for industrial products. This paper looks at the example of Sweden, where there has been a generation of investment in developing forest harvest residue recovery, and short cycle woody crops for bioenergy, but with only limited success. In contrast, secondary residues (processing wastes) from forestry industry are readily saleable for low value uses like bioenergy. This suggests that the model woody crop must have a higher value fraction to facilitate delivery and commercial use of its lower value fractions. This model is being emulated in the development of native mallee eucalypts as short cycle woody crops in Western Australia. Some $50 million has been expended on mallee development in the past decade and this has culminated in an engineering demonstration of integrated processing. The putative high value products are activated carbon and eucalyptus oil and the residue (plus waste heat) will be converted to electricity. The potential scale on which crops of this type would be required to achieve salinity control means that many more high value and residue products will have to be developed. Metallurgical charcoal appears to be a promising product option.

The epizonal Ag-Pb-Zn vein deposit at San Bartolome is characterised by a base-metal sulphide assemblage containing the spectacular development of interpenetrating, bladed networks of pyrrhotite which have been replaced by marcasite and pyrite. A similar assemblage displaying the same crystal habits and textures are also a diagnostic feature of the Sn and Sn- Ag deposits of Bolivia. On this basis, it is reasonable to conclude that both deposits were formed from fluids of similar nature and origin. Although no economic accumulation of Sn is known in San Bartolomr, further comparison of the geologic setting, age, mineralogy, fluid inclusion data and magmatic association of this deposit with the Bolivian systems has highlighted additional similarities consistent with a hypothesis that more extensive Sn mineralisation might exist in the San Bartolomd area.

Lafayette Mining Limited, a listed Australian company, is developing a polymetallic Project on the island of Rapu Rapu, located to the east of southern Luzon in the Philippines. The Rapu Rapu Project is based on the Ungay deposit, which has proven and probable reserves of 6.0 million tonnes of 2.5 g/t Au, 28 g/t Ag, 1.2 per cent Cu and 2.1 per cent Zn. The Project will produce copper and zinc concentrates from a sulphide flotation plant as well as dore from a CIL gold plant. Average annual metal production over the projected six-year mine life is 9800 tonnes of copper, 14 000 tonnes of zinc, 50 000 ounces of gold and 590 000 ounces of silver. Despite a rich mineral endowment and long mining history, there have not been any significant new mine developments in the Philippines since the early-1990s. The investment climate has been affected by legal challenges to the 1995 mining code, civil unrest in parts of the country, the impeachment of the previous President and community concerns about the industryÆs environmental performance. As a consequence, the Rapu Rapu Project is viewed as a test case û within both the country and the international mining industry û on whether minerals investment in the Philippines is an acceptable business proposition from a risk perspective. Lafayette has faced formidable challenges in managing the development risks of the Project. The major risk areas of the Project for which the company developed strategies include: regulatory, environmental and approvals issues, technical evaluation, project development, social and community issues, land acquisition, and financial and marketing issues. This paper describes the risk management strategies successfully pursued by the company, and which have the Project on track to commence construction in 2003. Dealing with each of the areas in turn, Lafayette sought to develop strategies which either effectively neutralised, minimised or otherwise addressed the key risks most likely to be experienced.

A novel approach is suggested for the solution of planning and development problems in the coal, mining industry. The formation of coal measures depends to a significant extent on sequential geological processes and events which are probably best defined in a "system of processes and responses." The great number of variables in such a system is a characteristic feature of geological environments. Research work over the past two decades, in particular, has successfully established analytical procedures for the identification and definition of relevant and irrelevant variables for mining developments in specific geological situations. Such situations are typifiable within the regional geological setting of coal deposits. Scale gaps can be bridged by reliance on common symmetrical attributes and pervasive geometric features. Depositional processes and their resulting attributes are responsible for the development of mechanically significant rockmass "defects" and anisotropies; such features have to be identified and assessed for the selection of colliery design criteria. It is suggested that the procedural frame- work of systems engineering analysis is a most appropriate tool for the assessment of those geological features that can influence the mechanical behaviour of the "floor-seam-roof" system in "high technology" mining operations of the future. Several nuclear techniques have been assessed for application to online conveyor belt analysis of oil yield from Rundle oil shale. The most favourable technique is neutron inelastic scattering which determines the total carbon content of bulk shale samples. Correlations of chemical laboratory assays for 540 Rundle oil shale samples show that oil yield can be predicted from total carbon to within 11 litre/tonne.Laboratory experimental work on 17 bulk samples of Rundle oil shale indicated that carbon and oil yield can be determined to within 0.6 wt per cent and 9 litre/tonne, respectively, using the neutron inelastic scatter technique. A practical neutron inelastic scatter gauge for application on a 23 mm thick reinforced conveyor belt could consist of a 5 curie 241 Am-Be neutron source and a 150 mm diameter x 100 mm thick Nal(TI) detector. With this gauge, the analysis time to achieve a counting statistical error of 6 litre/tonne should be about five minutes.

The effect of multiple tunnels /cavities on the stress and deformation field of the soil media was investigated by using a two dimen- sional plane strain boundary element model. The soil was considered as an elastic, isot- ropic and homogenous media. The interaction of two circular and parallel tunnels/cavities was investigated. Depth of burial, tunnel spacing and surface load width were the system variables considered. The results of this study indicated that the vertical displacements of the soil media increases by decreasing the distance between the adjacent openings, the interaction between the two tunnels/cavities can be neglected for K/D > 5, while the load width has a minor effect except in the dis- tance of D from the center line of the load and for a depth of 2D.

The longwall panels at Clarence Colliery have experienced intermittent sudden weightings on the face that have caused some production delays. These weightings have typically been more severe on the wider faces. A program of surface subsidence and extensometer monitoring was undertaken above Longwalls 4 and 5 to investigate the behaviour of the overburden strata during longwall extraction on two faces of different widths.The monitoring indicated that a dome shaped zone of large downward movement extends up into the overburden strata to a height equal to about the panel width.
