The Australian Centre for Minesite Rehabilitation Research (ACMRR) was established through a mining industry initiative to meet the need of industry, governments and the community for sustainable systems for land affected by exploration, mining and mineral processing activities. The Centre, which is a consortium of the major groups associated with mining rehabilitation research in Australia, has a focus on both strategic research and technology transfer and combines a wide range of multidisciplinary skills covering engineering and the physical and biological sciences. The paper briefly describes the goals, structure, expertise and research and technology transfer activities of the Centre. The major research program areas of waste rock dump and final void stability, acid mine drainage, tailings disposal, and remediation of ecosystem reconstruction are described in the context of national Priorities.

Steel fibre reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) is increasingly being used as ground support in both civil and mining applications. In recent years, methods of assessing the performance of SFRS have been developed. These include the beam test such as that prescribed by ASTM C-1018 and the panel test prescribed in the EFNARC European Shotcreting Standard. The panel test has gained popularity in recent times due to the two-way action modelled in the test. However, some difficulties have been noticed. Shear failures sometimes occur and there appears to be a rather high degree of variability in the panel test results. A new method of testing panels has been proposed. A circular panel supported on three symmetrically arranged points has been assessed at the University of Western Sydney. This paper describes the new test which may be the basis of a new specification for the testing of toughness of SFRS and summarises research work which has been carried out to-date.

The ore body being worked is about one hundred feet in length by seventy feet in width. A face of about fifteen feet is stoped over the whole level at one operation, this height standing without any timber.Double lines of logs, twenty feet in length and from ten inches to one foot in thickness at the small end, are then laid longitudinally, butt to butt, and breaking joint from end to end of the ore body they are at ten feet centres from wall to wall. The starting logs are single for the first ten feet and their ends are hitched into the solid rock. These are called "miners" and are the logs which are picked up as the level underneath is worked up. The double layer gives a better chance of picking up. Logs are now laid from the centre of the ore body at right angles to the miners, the ends being hitched into the walls. A space, seven feet wide, is left open right through the centre of the ore body...

Applications of chlorine metallurgy to the extraction of metals often result in the production of volatile metallic chlorides, most of which condense directly to a solid phase at 1 atm pressure. A stirred-bed condenser suitable for the recovery of these materials is described.The unit, developed from the concept of a fluid bed condenser, has the advantages of versatility of operation and ability to control fog and dust formation. Test work using aluminium chloride vapour (as an example of a volatile chloride) gave recoveries approaching 100 per cent. The yield was dependent upon halide content of the vapour, flowrate, and, to a lesser extent, upon coolant temperature. Analysis of the heat transfer dataindicated condensation side coefficients in the range 10 to 30 B.T.U./hr sq. ft. 0p.

In 1939 Dr Neil George gave us the statement: Safety is a state of mind by which men are constantly made aware of the possibility of injury at all times. Is this statement still relevant? Have we been able to capture the essence of Dr GeorgeÆs statement in our current safety management systems and have we been able to capture the lessons from the past? Drawing upon 25 years of experience in the mining industry we explore what was done in the past, how this related to Dr GeorgeÆs statement and how the industry has progressed to the current safety management systems. We review the safety management system used by Roche Mining and demonstrate how it has improved safety outcomes for Roche. We then look to the future û are there new challenges? Are the current management systems equipped to cater for these new challenges and deliver continued improvement in safety outcomes? There will always be a desire to improve the industryÆs safety outcomes and so how are future generations going to achieve the improvement in safety outcomes?

The requirement of mineral resources is increasing as the economy is continually increasing in China. The mining practices of various complex sulphide deposits and precious metal deposits, and the treatment of mine tailings and other industrial solid wastes, have greatly improved fill quality in the metal mines. From early-1980s, high density slurry fill, paste fill of total tailings, low density slurry fill with addition of silicate gelling agent, etc has been studied and applied, and some progress has been achieved. Today, mine tailings, slag and power plant ash are widely used as fill materials in mining. A number of cemented fill mines equipped with large capacity trackless mining machines are in production. Recently, The 3rd Chinese National Symposium on Mining with Backfill, 1995 has been held, the progress of fill technology in mines has been exchanged and summarised. In the paper, some aspects of fill technology used in the metal mines of China are briefly introduced and some applications of fill research work are presented.

Comalco's Bell Bay smelter produces some 94 000 t.p.a. of primary aluminium in the form of foundry alloys, extrusion billet and rolling blocks. The extrusion billet and rolling block are produced by a process, in which molten aluminium is poured into an open ended water cooled mould of the required shape. The bottom of the mould is initially closed off by a dummy or starting block. Primary cooling takes place at the mould wall and secondary cooling is achieved by direct water sprays onto the out side shell of the product. Careful preparation of the molten alumin- ium is essential if stringent alloy specific- ation limits are to be met. Optimum casting temperature must be maintained within a narrow range and metal cleanliness is important to ensure a consistent product. Australia has been a major exporter of LPG since production from the Bass Strait fields commenced in 1970. Export levels have been maintained through the seventies, the bulk of material being delivered to Japan. During this period the use of LPG in domestic markets grew only'slowly and demand was largely met by production from refineries with only shortfall supplies being drawn from naturally occurring sources. The domestic demand is forecast to grow significantly during the eighties as the traditional, automotive and petrochemical uses of LPG are expanded. An increasing amount of naturally occurring production will be directed into these markets. Despite this redirection the current level of exports (about 1.5 million tonnes per year) is likely to be maintained through much of the decade ahead as production from the Cooper Basin and the North West Shelf becomes available.

The Australian glass sand industry produces some 2.8 million tonnes per annum of silica sand, of which about 2.0 million tonnes are exported and the rest is for the domestic market. Approximate production rates for each Australian state are listed.The variety of processing methods used in the currently exploited deposits reflects the size, location, and characteristics of the various deposits and the requirement of the end market/s. The industry uses to a large extent equipment developed for the separation of mineral sands, particularly as it applies to low grade heavy mineral deposits, where low cost, high capacity and metallurgically efficient equipment has proved eminently suitable for the production of the low value glass sands.The requirements of the domestic market, as well as those of the present and potential export markets are discussed covering quality requirements, distribution channels and other factors critical to success.

Up to 80 per cent of the copper in a bornite ore can be quickly leached with percolating acidified ferric sulphate solutions. The upper limit for rapid copper extraction is set by the conversion of bornite to slowly dissolving chalcopyrite. The dissolution occurs in two stages: a rapid linear initial stage, followed by a slow, non-linear stage. The initial step is largely controlled by the rate of oxidant supply (Fe2(S04)3); temperature is not an important variable during the initial reaction. The second leaching stage is controlled by chemical and physical factors and is temperature dependent. The initial copper leaching rates are insensitive to both the concentration of the ferrous sulphate reaction product, and the sulphuric acid concentration.

The financing of smaller resource projects has proven to be a difficult problem for promoters and financiers alike as very often such projects have not met the requirements of available financing methods and promoters have equally found it difficult to establish credibility, management and technical ability with potential financing sources. Solutions to the dilemma in which many of these projects find themselves are not readily apparent but will need to be found if the full potential of Australia's resources is to be realised. INTRODUCTION The growth of so called project financing in its present form is normally considered to be a phenomenon of very recent times, however, paradoxically there are references to what could be called financing in the old testament. A great part of the research on froth flotation of gold ores deals with ores containing gold associated mainly with sulphides, resulting in a largely accepted view that what takes place with sulphides (eg pyrite) in a flotation cell also happens to gold particles. This paper is concerned with the influence of some inorganics (CuSO4, CaO and NaCN) on gold particles flotation, using ethyl or amyl xanthates as collectors. The bench-scale tests were carried out with ground quartz and gold particles mixtures. Some findings stemmed from this study: flotation of the gold particles of size 0.16 mm was efficient adding only frother; larger gold grains were better recovered by the use of stronger collector CuSO4 did not seem to be an activator for gold; the addition of NaCN up to 200 g/t or CaO up to 2000 g/t did not depress the gold grains when amyl xanthate was used as collector although with ethyl xanthate the gold depression was verified.

The Filbara region of northwestern Western Australia contains several known occurrences of mafic/ultramafic rock assemblages which may host platinum group element (POE) mineralisation. This paper deals with occurrences at Munni Munni and Andover. The Munni Munni complex is of particular interest because it is known to contain PGE mineralisation and is currently undergoing active exploration. The US/Australia Joint Scanner Project of October 1985 collected airborne scanner data for the BMR over Munni Munni. Such an ultramafic-mafic complex had not been previously researched with advanced remote sensing instrumentation. Extensive investigation of data from the NSOO1 (Thematic Mapper Simulator) scanner resulted in successful differentiation of gabbroic and ultramafic rocks, and also subdivision within the ultramafies. Similar differentiation could not be achieved using conventional Landsat MSS imagery and aerial photography. Encouraged by those results and in support of BMR field research into the mafic-ultramafic suites of the region, data from the Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) instrument were investigated to attempt differentiation of the ultramafic and mafic rocks in the Andover complex some 50 km to the northeast of Munni Munni.

The dissolution of gold from various ore-bodies is discussed in terms of extraction rates and reagent consumptions during leaching. Gold dissolves slowly in cyanide but reagent consumptions are usually satisfactory. In almost all cases where excessive cyanide consumptions occur, similar high consumptions result with other lixiviants. Recovery of gold from cyanide solution is well established and comparatively simple technology.Gold dissolution in thiourea is faster than cyanide but significant consumptions of thiourea, due to both adsorption and oxidation, occur. Gold recovery from thiourea solutions is likely to be more difficult than from cyanide.Chlorination of gold is very fast in acidic conditions but excessive consumption of chlorine occurs for ores containing greater than 0.5% S. Reprecipitation of gold and handling of acidic chlorine solutions are both significant problems. The mechanism of gold reduction onto activated carbon creates difficulties in the carbon in pulp process for recovery of gold but means a simplification in the production of bullion from loaded carbon.

Industrias Pe±oles, S A de C V (Pe±oles) in Mexico, is a major silver producer. The Pe±oles mining division has eight operations and the flotation process in seven of them to concentrate the metal and mineral values. Common metal and mineral values are: metallic gold and silver; gold-silver alloy (electrum); silver sulfide minerals (acanthite, pyrargyrite, freibergite, proustite); lead sulfide (galena); zinc sulfide (sphalerite); and copper sulfides (chalcopyrite and bornite). This paper aims to share Pe±olesÆs mineralogical and metallurgical information on the seven operations where the flotation process is used. Some basic conclusions are drawn from this analysis. Some of the information presented includes: types of orebodies, concentration processes, concentrator throughputs, head grades, concentrate grades and recoveries. Importantly, grind size and liberation values for the main mineral species are presented along with the relationships between sphalerite liberation and its recovery, and galena liberation and its recovery. Also included are three mineralogical case studies: maximisation of silver recovery at the Fresnillo mine producing a silver-zinc concentrate; options to improve gold recovery at the Tizapa mine; and sphalerite iron content for the different orebodies.

Having successfully applied computer techniques to open pit mining applications, many software developers are now using their skills to tackle the much harder areas of underground mine design, planning and production.Dramatic improvements in the performance to price ratio of hardware (including high resolution graphics screens), a better understanding of the techniques of surface and solids modelling (and their subsequent display), moves towards standard user interfaces and advanced concepts of representing grade distribution in the ore body have all contributed to the recent increase in underground mining software activity.This paper details the general requirements of a workable underground mining software system, providing a minimum checklist of desirable features and emphasises the importance of ease of use, flexibility and intuitive feel. Some relevant trends in hardware, software and application techniques are highlighted and comments made on areas which require further development or are only available in a small number of packages.Finally, a comment is made on the role of computer models to provide a unifying medium for tying together all aspects of underground design, planning and production.

Study of coal oxidation at low temperatures forms the basis of investigating the inherent properties of spontaneous combustion of coal. In general, the process of coal oxidation at low temperatures is very complex, involving many factors. Experiments examining the properties of oxidation and ignition of coal have been carried out. Based upon the results of these experiments, the catastrophe properties in the process of coal oxidation are analysed and the mechanism of catastrophe is proved for the ignition of coal. A folding catastrophe model is also established for the process of coal oxidation. Results obtained show that the process of coal oxidation to ignition is discontinuous, where the coal-environment system yields structure destabilisation. The system can jump from one stable attractor to another. The research results presented in this paper help to show the irregularities of coal oxidation at low temperatures and how to pursue effective control measures.

The design of water and ore addition points has an important bearing on the ease of operation of a grinding circuit. The nature of some of the design decisions and the possible options of the designer are discussed. For example, design decisions determine the ease of alteration and measurement of flowrate, the ease of maintenance, and the effectiveness of feed- back control loops which maintain material inputs (water and ore) at required values. To illustrate discussion in the paper, a grinding circuit which contains one rod mill and one ball mill in series is used. Practical ramifications of desigl decisions :;ne stressed.

By the 1990's Australia could be the largest coal exporter in the world and one of the few industrialised countries potentially able to supply the shortfall in its domestic oil requirements by utilizing its oil shale and coal resources to manufacture synthetic oil. Why go to the CIS? The vast mineral potential of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) has long been recognised, but it has taken the lowering of the iron curtain to open up the region to serious mineral development consideration by the Western World. The advent of a free market economy and the emergence of the Independent States with pressing needs for foreign investment has led to a greatly improved investment climate. Coupled with the desire for some of the more entrepreneurial resources companies to head the wave of investment to the region, this sequence of events has promised a great deal, but delivered only modest progress to-date. Potential gold project development has provided the major focus, for three reasons: the region is highly prospective for gold, gold projects tend to have a relatively lower start-up capital cost compared to base metal and fossil fuel projects and finally bullion or refined gold is more readily transportable and easier to sell.
