There has been much debate in the past as to whether the Australasian Institute of Mining and Meteorology ("AusIMM") should issue valuation guidelines in addition to the ASX and NCSC requirements. My experience in preparing independent expert reports has been that "best practice" sets higher standards than any laws or requirements set out by the ASX and NCSC. This is where I see the AusIMM coming in.

Minerals are of course important to our way of living and hence the search and exploitation of minerals has always had a high priority in Australia. Metal mining commenced in South Australian in the 1840s when silver-lead and copper were first mined. This was Australia's earliest mining era and led to the rush that never ended. Neither dispersion forces nor double-layer forces can account for hydro- phobicity, though the latter are known to influence the kinetics of capture. Since fundamental research in applied coal petrography is carried out mostly on polished surfaces, backscattered electron microscopy is most applicable for studying coal in the SEM. By employing this technique coal macerals can be easily identified , and information on the relations between maceral groups, mineral matter and trace elements are highlighted by grey level contrasts. This type of information is valuable in coal technology and cannot by normally revealed by the light microscopy (e.g. the distribution of inherent mineral matter).

Remote sensing has been used for many years but until recently its application has been limited by the resolution of the data available. High resolution airborne multi-spectral scanner data (MSS) has proven suitable for a number of applications including environmental management and monitoring. Compositional and isotopic analyses of coal seam gases in the Southern Coalfields have shown that these gases frequently contain abnormally high concentrations of magmatically derived carbon dioxide. The size of this carbon dioxide reservoir and the extent of permeation of the sediments by carbon dioxide are not known.Therefore caution in evaluating the natural gas potential of the region is advised.
