Six simulations by the Mpnte Carlo method employing both classical and geostatistical techniques are presented for the determination of the probability distribution of the in situ value of a coal seam. To avoid the problem of qualitative estimation of parameter variability in the calculation of an arbitrary seam value, only data values from borehole information were used to quantify the variation in four coai seam parameters.The method which is suggested as being the most appropriate is a particular geostatistical approach that employs the best linear unbiased estimate and the error of estimation for a number of two dimensional blocks. The results indicate that the variance of the coal seam unit value may be much higher than that indicated by the classical approach because of the spatial variability that is properly incorporated in the geostatistical approach.The model used in the Monte Carlo simulation to determine the economic value of a coal seam can be extended to incorporate all those parameters which are necessary for a true estimation of the probability distribution of the coal seam value. A time value concept for discounting can also be incorporated to optimize the economic return of a coal mining project.

 The Southern Alps is an active oblique collisional zone which has a characteristic wedge-shaped geometry above a low-angle ductile shear zone. The Main Divide region is a relatively low strain zone above this ductile shear zone, and is _deforming principally along steeply dipping strike-slip faults. Extensional fractures are common at a high angle to the regional structural trend. These steeply dipping structures act as conduits for gold-bearing fluids from depth, and small mesothermal gold deposits have formed at several structural levels including the near-surface region. Gold has also been deposited in a meteoricmetamorphic fluid mixing zone near a conductive thermal anomaly on the western slopes of the mountains. These various gold deposits and their well-constrained structural and tectonic settings can be used as analogues for larger, deeper-eroded mesothermal gold deposits in the Mesozoic Otago Schist belt. High level Miocene veins in NW Otago have formed beneath the main divide of the initiating Southern Alps. Late metamorphic gold-bearing veins formed as fluid escaped from the ductile-deforming crustal root beneath Mesozoic mountains.

Underground excavations are subjected to complex stress changes caused by nearby mining, but may also be affected by repeated dynamic loading from blasting and seismic events. In some cases, the combined, cumulative effects can lead to unforeseen damage, displacement and instability. Simulating dynamic loading of an underground excavation is a very complex task. The state of rock mass stress, damage and deformation must first be simulated sufficiently requiring small-scale structures to be explicitly modelled. Supporting elements must be represented with high similitude and then the dynamic event must be applied to the system in the case of blasts, or evolve as a consequence of rock mass instability for seismic events. A special case is for the effect of pit blasting on underground excavations - discontinuous rock phenomena at scales from mine, to bench, to pillar, to tunnel need to be captured and this represents one of the most computationally intensive tasks in mine simulation. Recent advances in computer power allow these tasks to be completed at a mine scale, incorporating discontinuities and geological detail matching the best practice for static Finite Element analyses. The results are a worthwhile contribution to mine decision-making, but require careful interpretation and thoughtful inputs - even more so than quasi-static analysis - as the cumulative effects of unfavourable modeling practices are greater. Some learnings from experiences with mine scale, discontinuum dynamic simulation are summarised, including a discussion of considerations of scale and similitude for this type of analysis.

Since early-2001, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) has successfully operated an ultra fine grinding (UFG) circuit to supplement its roaster capacity for the treatment of the refractory gold flotation concentrate. A second UFG mill was installed in 2002 taking the total UFG capacity to over 20 tph while grinding to 11 to 12 microns and achieving over 90 per cent gold recovery. A development program in 2002/3 involving plant trials, pilot plants and laboratory testwork resulted in process improvements and a better understanding of the milling and gold leach processes that assisted in narrowing the gap between UFG and roasting. This paper details the operation of the ultra fine grinding process at KCGM as a non oxidative treatment for the extraction of gold from a refractory ores.

The area, A, under a gamma-ray log that passes through a horizontal bed given by: A = gl/k. Here is the equivalent concentration of U3O8 in the body, l the thickness of the body, and k the calibration factor or sensitivityof the logger. The area is independent of the logging speed or logger time constant.This relationship, together with the first moment about the maximum of the log and its value there suflicient to determine the thickness, position of the centre of the bed from the log maximum and the concentration of U3O8.Numerical results obtained from artificial and field data show that the computed results arc as good as those obtained by methods such as the inverse filter technique and the iterative method. The present method yields results that arc easier to feed into an ore reserve data base.

This paper proceeds from the premise that process improvement is a key part of the mineral engineer’s role, and one in which he/she can make a significant contribution to shareholder value. It presents four tools to help with process improvement projects. Two are designed for process monitoring, to determine as soon as possible whether there has been a true change in performance: the cumulative sum (cusum) control chart plot with V-mask, and the control chart using a process model. The other two are used for process optimisation: simplex self-directing evolutionary operation (SSDEVOP), and a response surface model developed using a central composite rotatable experimental design (CCRD). These methods are robust, have a rigorous theoretical basis and are easy to implement. They also promote project continuity which increases the chances of success, particularly in fly-in/fly-out (FIFO) operations. Variants are used in other industries, but they are rarely if ever applied in mineral processing to-day for reasons which are unclear. The paper gives examples of the application of each method in concentrators which demonstrate that they have the potential to be useful additions to the mineral engineer’s professional toolbox.CITATION:Napier-Munn, T J, 2014. The introduction of digital communications technologies into the underground mining industry, in both coal and hard rock mining, has enabled high bandwidth applications to be applied in the mining industry. Digital networks based on 802.11 b/g/n open Wi-Fi standards have allowed numerous applications to be run over a single communication backbone. One of the many important applications is the tracking of personnel and equipment via RFID Tags. This tracking application has formed the basis of a Proximity Detection System or Collision Avoidance System (Schiffbauer and Mowrey, 2001; Kent, Fischer and Schiffbauer, 2011) thereby improving safety and increasing control in the mining environment. This paper discusses the growth of digital technology as the backbone for communications in underground mining applications. This growth has allowed the ‘convergence of technologies’ (occurring in the general business world) to be available to mine operators in general and underground mine operators in particular. Mine Site Technologies’ involvement with major mining companies and mining equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in developing and supplying their communication systems is also discussed.The latest technical requirements and specifications for communication systems for underground and open cut mines will be reviewed.

Bow-tie analysis is a commonly used tool in the Major Hazard Facility sector to identify, display and control risks that have the potential to pose serious harm to personnel. It is a simple but powerful risk management tool that displays traditional risk assessment outputs as easily interpreted ‘bow-tie diagrams’. These are an effective and versatile communication format that can be applied to any type of risk (eg safety, environmental, assets etc) and as such show great benefit in managing operational hazards in mining.

Two new splitter designs for intercepting moving streams of matter are presented, the variable cross-stream splitter (vCSS) and the rotary stream splitter (RSS), which are intended for implementation in a fully automated modus. The vCSS facilitates obtaining up to three subsamples with different splitting ratios from automated laboratory flow paths, while the RSS divides the intercepted sample into 16 equal analytical aliquots. The splitters can process a wide range of dry, granular and free-flowing materials (<5 mm). The required weight for each subsample can be set without mechanical adjustments in the case of the vCSS. Typical applications are subsampling/splitting for X-ray fluorescence pelletisation (or fused beads) or splitting for average shift composite sampling or grain size analysis. The vCSS combines the advantages of riffle splitting (three user-defined subsample masses) with miniature bed blending and can accept up to 15 kg in total incoming sample mass. In practice, the automated vCSS can deal with unlimited ingoing mass fluxes, while the RSS is designed to operate at a user-defined fixed subsampling rate (1/16th in the tested version). Both splitters have the potential to be optimised and evaluated according to an application/user-defined total sampling error (TSE) + total analytical error (TAE) threshold. Both splitters were tested under adverse conditions and with compositions involving three components with properties representing typical mass fluxes and components concentrations in industrial and technological systems: phosphate concentrate 89.00 per cent (<500 µm), slag ten per cent (>2 mm) and glass spheres one per cent (750–1000 µm). The slag particles vary widely in particle shape, aspect ratio and surface roughness, while the glass spheres are extremely prone to bouncing and segregation (spillage). This test system is extremely difficult to split and thus constitutes a realistic worst-case scenario. While the vCSS does not comply strictly with Theory of Sampling demands for correctness, both splitters may well be able to deliver fit-for-purpose representative results if/when tested properly. Average relative mass deviations ranged from 1.89 per cent for phosphate concentrate (relative standard deviations of 20-fold repeated splitting) to 4.72 per cent for glass spheres and 13.04 per cent for slag. For the RSS, the average replication experiment splitting variation was 2.89 per cent for phosphate concentrate, 4.82 per cent for glass spheres and 11.1 per cent for slag. Both new automated online splitters would therefore appear to be able to be tuned to fit-for-purpose representivity (defined here as maximum relative reproducibility <5 per cent) for many non-extreme materials; however, it is always imperative to test every new type/class of material empirically. In 2021 the ports of Port Hedland and Dampier in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia handled 900 Mt of iron ore. This ore was produced in the Hamersley’s mines and transported by trains to the ports for subsequent export. Dust, which is generally considered to be particles less than 100 μm in diameter, is generated at all steps in the supply chain. Whilst all dust may have potential impacts on human health and mangroves and buildings a proportion of the dust is classed as respirable (PM10) dust, which consists of particles <10 μm in diameter. In 2021, in response to the community concern with iron ore dust, CSIRO commissioned an internal study to characterise and benchmark the dustiness of the different ores and to develop targeted strategies to minimise dust impacts, without affecting other iron properties, such as stickiness during transportation. A specific concern is that that the dust in the PM10 fraction may contain significant amounts of particulates, such as free silicates which may have health implications for the workers and residents. This study provided detailed mineral and chemical characterisation of the dust generated from the railed fine ore products for five generic Australian ore types: Australian Channel iron Deposit (ACID), Australian Brockman (AB), Australian Marra Mamba (AMM), Australian Pilbara (AP) and Australian magnetite (AM). The dust from these fine ore products were compared to that generated from a sample of Brazilian Hematite (BH) type ore fines. The ores were evaluated for their physical, chemical and mineralogy properties, dust generating potential and understandings of the relationship between the dustiness of iron ores and their physiochemical properties. The size distributions of the railed fine ore products were determined and a suite of analyses were conducted on subsamples of total (-106 μm) and fine (-38 μm) dust. For all the ores, the total dust fraction contains less Fe and more contaminants (SiO2 and Al2O3) than did the bulk ore. The fine dust fraction contained even less Fe and more contaminants (SiO2 and Al2O3) than the total dust fraction. This suggests that the iron ore dust contains more clay and potentially free silica than does the bulk ore. These findings were supported by optical and Scanning electron microscopy analyses of the samples. Dustiness measurements were made for each of the different ores (-106 μm) to investigate the relationship of dustiness of various iron ores with their physiochemical properties and assess their responses to dust suppression by the application of water sprays.

Tunnelling for hydro-electric power projects can be a very challenging component of the overall development. In contrast to urban transportation tunnelling where the logistics for access and supply of power, water and other essentials are readily available, hydropower projects are usually in very remote locations and all necessary plant, equipment, spares and materials need to be brought in and the site must function as a self sufficient unit.For a large scheme the river diversion tunnel(s) are usually on the initial phase critical path in order to meet the non-negotiable deadline of river diversion before the onset of the wet season. A newly formed tunnelling crew, once mobilised to the site for the project, will face the first major learning curve of the project’s systems and logistics during this critical tunnelling activity.Power tunnels convey the water to the turbines in the powerhouse and are usually on the critical path for the main works, especially if the scheme comprises a powerhouse located within an underground cavern. A modern cavern arrangement requires a complex warren of various openings: access adits, ventilation/cable tunnels, shafts, surge tunnels, etc.Hydropower tunnel construction tends to be dominated by tunnel boring machine (TBMs) or drill-and-blast excavation techniques and each has its challenges in very remote locations. TBMs still have long lead times as for any type of project, but additionally require a thorough roads and bridges infrastructure assessment of the country from the port of entry to the site to ensure a problem-free delivery. In some cases the project also requires the establishment of a complete precast concrete segment production facility and the space for creation of laydown areas; there is no ‘just-in-time’ delivery mechanism applicable to typical remote hydropower sites.This paper highlights the technical and risk management considerations in the planning, design and construction of tunnels for hydropower projects. It contrasts the typical factors that govern the design of urban transportation tunnels with those for remote hydropower tunnels. The perspectives of stakeholders are provided including those of international lenders. With examples from large and small scale projects across the globe it provides an insight to all parties and in particular, those tunnellers that are working in the hydropower field for the first time.

Tools such as landform evolution models (LEMs) provide a means of predicting how a landform may evolve over extended periods of time. Here, we utilise the CAESAR-Lisflood LEM to assess a proposed rehabilitated landform of the Ranger Uranium Mine in the Northern Territory of Australia (Figure 1). The environmental requirements for the closure of the mine state that the final landform must be able to physically isolate tailings material from the environment for a period of at least 10,000 years (Australian Government, 1999). However, uncertainty exists as to the reliability of model predictions representing thousands of years.In this study, we use model predictions from an undisturbed pre-mine landform to calibrate the parameters used in model simulations of a post-mining rehabilitated landform over a simulated period of 1,000 years. Specifically, we vary environmental conditions such as rainfall, presence/absence of vegetation and surface particle size characteristics in a series of model simulations to determine their impact on the respective landforms, to revise model input parameters as required. A simulated period of 1,000 years was used as it represents a period in which long term landform evolution patterns and trends may be established and identified. In redesigning the cyanide plant at Mount Torrens, in conjunction with Mr. L. W. Grayson, the manager, several minor alterations were introduced in order to have the operations under thorough control, and these having proved serviceable may be of sufficient interest to merit a description here. The lixiviation vats, though only 8 feet in diameter, were retained, but the pipes leading away from the bottom were reduced from two inches to half-an-inch in diameter, and had a fall to the zinc boxes of about 4 feet. As these small pipes were completely filled by the solutions fiowing away from the vats, they exerted a suction equal to their fall and thus hastened the rate of flow, so that tailings containing a larger proportion of slimes could be treated than was possible where the larger pipes were used, as, there not being sufficient fiow of solution to keep the latter filled, no suction could be obtained with them. It was found that with&apos;most of the tailings treated a sufficient flow could be obtained from the half-inch pipes when the taps on, them were only one-third to half open. The lower end of each of these pipes was connected by means on indiarubber tubing with the sille hole of 11 in aspirator bottle, and to the mouth of this bottle a few feet of similar tubing was connected, so that the solutions coming through could be directed into either of the fixed tubes leading respectively to the waste water tank the strong solution zinc boxes or the weak solution zinc boxes.In working the vats, the following method was found to give good results. While filling the vats with tailings the taps were left open, so that the water might drain off into the waste water tank the surface of the tailings was carefully levelled. When the strong solution was run in at the top, the air contained in the interstices of the tailings was forced through the half-inch pipe at the bottom as a strong blast, instead of, as I believe js usual, escaping by means of channels formed by it through the tailings, and thus tending, it would appeal, to render the disposition of the tailings less even and to make.

Observed mineral assemblages in the Mt. Lyell copper deposit can be correlated with phase equilibrium investigations in the systems Cu-Fe-S and Fe-Zn-S. The trend of crystallization (or paragenetic sequence) of the ores is reflected in a progressive increase in the Cu: Fe and metal: sulphur ratios of the assemblages. This trend agrees with the regional zoning of the district. Tentative relationships between the paragenetic sequence, sulphur vapour pressure, and temperature are presented graphically. The absence of a suitable geological thermometer prevents precise elucidation of the range of temperatures and pressures which existed during crystallization.INTRODUCTIONRecent phase equilibrium investigations of metal-sulphur systems at the Geophysical Laboratory, Washington, D.C. provide valuable information on the stability relations of a number of important sulphide minerals. This data, when applied to natural ore deposits, may be expected to clarify two special problems which confront the ore petrologist seeking to interpret observed data in terms of a particular physical and chemical environment of ore deposition. These two problems are the sequence of formation of sulphide minerals (commonly designated the paragenetic sequence) and an elucidation of the range of temperatures and pressures which existed during crystallization. Winzes are usually sunk 9 ft. 6 in. long by 6 ft. 0 in. wide and are divided into two compartments, 4 ft. 0 in. by 5 ft. 0 in. inside the timbers. The general practice is to sink the winze to a depth of from 9 to 12 ft., put in bearers and three or four rings of timber, and then erect a sinking headframe before continuing sinking operations.GENERALThe main feature governing the design of the headframe was that all parts could be transported on timber trolleys in No. 2 Shaft. Except for some minor details the structural members consist of steam pipe. Joints are sections of steam pipe welded to one member and into which the other member fits and is held in place by a 1-in. bolt. The headframe consists essentially of two bedpieces to carry the winch and to form a seat for the four legs. The legs support the sheave bearers, the tipping door and the brace.Except during tipping operations the door is in a nearly vertical position. For tipping it is lowered to an inclined position and a hook suspended from one of the bracing members of the headframe is attached to a &quot;D&quot; welded to the bottom of the kibble. This causes the kibble to tip when it is lowered on to the tipping door. The authors describe two stratiform intrusions within a two miles thick ophiolite belt, one of the many ophiolite (serpentine) belts of the eugeosynclinal sequences of the Kalgoorlie System (metamorphic age c.2700 million years). Unusually good evidence of gravitational differentiation involving cumulates for an Alpine type peridotite-gabbro intrusion has been obtained, in spite of modifications of the original igneous rocks imposed by regional metamorphism. Unmetamorphosed relics of cumulate rocks are a surprising feature of this occurIfence.&apos;fhe differentiation process reflected in the layered sequences is compared to that of the Stillwater Intrusion, Montana. Phase, cryptic and rhythmic layering are recognized. The economic significance of this study lies not only in the possibility of nickel mineralization in this ophiolite belt, but also in that much detailed information on the nature of these belts, which is difficult to obtain in the case of the more altered and sheared rocks of the belts carrying gold and nickel ore deposits nearby, is gathered from the Yilmia occurrences.

Flyrock is the unexpected and undesirable projection of rock fragments during detonation of a blast and managing this risk is becoming an increasing challenge as urban development encroach toward mineral extraction sites. The basic factors associated with flyrock are discussed in relation to geology, blast design and management. Published data of historical flyrock events are investigated and compared with local information on incidents. Good agreement was found between the data sets. A computer program of flyrock was developed using projectile motion based on launch velocity and angle, rock size, shape and density. This deterministic model was coupled with a probability model to simulate blast events. The impulse time ?t of the explosive pressure was taken as the stochastic variable to replace launch velocity. The variables were calibrated to replicate field data. A simulation was executed to demonstrate the capability of the approach to defining flyrock danger zones. For a simplistic situation it was identified that an appropriate distance to be cordoned off for the blast danger zone is a radius of 120 m in front of the blast and 65 m behind.

The Mine is an underground zinc (Zn), lead (Pb) and silver (Ag) operation in central New South Wales (NSW). Broadly speaking the Mine has two domains that require rehabilitation, the mine industrial area (MIA) and the tailings storage facility (TSF). The MIA has been used for the handling and processing of ore and contains elevated sulfate, sulfide and metals (Pb, Zn). The TSF receives the by-products of processing, that is, potentially acid forming (PAF) tailings which also contain elevate sulfate, sulfide and metals. Typically, the rehabilitation of a TSF involves two controls. Firstly, controlling the potential for PAF tailings to form acid rock drainage (ARD) by limiting interaction with oxygen. Secondly, once the tailings are unsaturated, limiting interaction with water (usually as rainfall) to reduce the potential for ARD to be transported to the receiving environment. These two controls are often employed in the form of a cover.In semi-arid environments there are many Australian examples of covers that have been built to limit interactions of mine by-products with oxygen and water. Typically, the covers contain one or more layers and are built from soil and rock which may include run-of-mine rock. The Mine however has limited supplies of stockpiled soil; and run-of-mine rock is not generated in large volumes because it is used as backfill underground. A cover design strategy was developed to cater for these limiting factors. The strategy identified soil, ore and rock accretion (the accretion) below the MIA could be a potential source of borrow material for the cover. The purpose of this paper is to describe the cover design process, the method and results of large (2 m tall) column trials that were used as a cost-effective way to trial three cover options and finally, the paper describes the water balance that was developed from the column trial results and subsequent modelling using SVFlux.CITATION:Rohde, T K and Jamson, N, 2018. This paper describes the acquisition, exploration, development, initial operation and subsequent financing of the Bulawan mine by means of a listing on the Toronto Stock Exchange of a subsidiary of the parent company, Philex Mining Corporation.Located on the island of Negros in the Philippines the property is unique on at least two counts: it is a disseminated gold deposit that occurs in a region of predominantly porphyry copper mineralisation; and it is a gold deposit that is mined by a bulk method of extraction (front and block cave) instead of the normal selective mining methods.
