This is a philosophical paper. it discusses some of the concepts underlying the estimation of geological reserves and the determination of cut-off grades. It explores how they interrelate and how they merge eventually with mine design and mining reserves. The main intent is clarification, particularly in certain areas where misconceptions are common.

In 1971 the first Grangcold Pelletizing Plant came into operation at Grangesberg, Sweden where from a rich magnetite low- phosphoric concentrate and a cement binder (Portland cement clinker and granulated blast furnace slag) self-fluxing blast furnace pellets are produced.

Most mining dredges are adapted from canal/harbour dredges. Their automation and control systems are generally not designed for integrated mining operations. Consequently they have a number of limitations. This paper describes a new dredge control concept which paves the way for improved efficiency and increased production.

This paper briefly outlines the develop ment of the froth flotation plant at Coal Cliff Colliery. The plant was superimposed onto the original flow sheet in which fines were merely thickened and filtered. Test work leading up to the installation is described and the final layout is discussed. Details of the concentrate and tailings systems are given. Preliminary results of a further extension involving the use of a Davcra flotation machine are also given.

The role of automation in the environmental management of the various stages of mining projects is discussed. Remote sensing can be useful in the exploration phase, but tends not to have sufficient resolution for individual operations. Automatic samplers, whether for meteorology, air or water, are widely used, but can have operational problems. The environmental scientist, the electronics engineer and the computer programmer must combine in the future to develop products which are applicable, robust and simple to use.

In April, 1990 the Sydney Water Board invited bids for the construction of the Hazelbrook Carrier Section 3 being part of the Blue Mountains Sewerage Transfer Scheme. The author has been involved in dealings with Aboriginal groups over this period. It is with great pleasure that I accepted the invitation to make a closing address to this Congress particularly as it is here in Brisbane. The main duty of the International Mine Ventilation Congress Committee and in particular the chairman is to ensure that these conferences are held every four to five years in suitable locations. My main role over the last four years has been to promote holding this Congress in Australia and it was a great relief when the Queensland team and the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy accepted the challenge in November 1986.

The natural semiconducting mineral rutile and sphalerite exhibited highly photocatalytic activities on degradation of methyl orange under visible light irradiation. The isomorphous substitutions of host metal ions by foreign ions and other defect states in natural semiconductors altered the band structure, decreased the intrinsic band gap, and then made them very attractive for solar energy utilisation. Our study indicated that natural semiconductor minerals might be suggested as a new class of cost-effective and solar light-responsive photocatalyst.

Since 1985 there has been a revival in the alluvial gold mining industry in North Queensland. However, not all mines which have been established have been successful, some times due to a misconception that alluvial mines are quick to establish and easy to operate. A check list of factors which need to be considered when assessing alluvial mining projects in North Queensland is presented and their relative importance is briefly discussed.
