The relevance of ore-dressing mineralogical investigations to developing and improving metallurgical flow-sheets is discussed and examples are given of the application of such studies to various types of ores and mill products (Au, Cu-Sn, Ni and Sn). The mineralogical investigations described illustrate (a) assessment of the feasibility of ore pre-concentration by heavy-media cyclone separation, (b) evaluation of the potential applicability of various metallurgical treatment processes to an ore, and (c) characterization of mill products to assess circuit efficiency and to guide circuit modifications.

Polycrystalline and surface complexes (at synthetic sphalerite, ZnS, and galena, PbS) of zinc(II) and lead(II) ions with eight different O,OÆ-dialkyldithiophosphate (Dtph) substances have been prepared and comparatively studied by means of 31P CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy. The 31P resonances have been assigned to dithiophosphate groups with terminal S,SÆ-chelating or bridging coordinations in the mono-, bi-, tetra- and polynuclear complexes respectively. The bridging coordination of two neighbouring zinc(II) ions by O,OÆ-dialkyldithio-phosphate ligands was established at the surface of synthetic sphalerite.The adsorption mechanism of dialkyldithiophosphate on synthetic galena includes formation of a surface complex as well as surface precipitation. Principally different coordination modes of the reagent were discovered at the surfaces of galena and sphalerite (ie terminal S,SÆ-chelating coordination to the lead atom).Derivatives of monothiophosphoric and phosphoric acids were displayed as hydrolysis products of dialkyldithiophosphates at synthetic PbS.

Three cross sections, 200 m apart, display the distribution of indicator hydrothermal minerals across the Empire zone of the Golden Cross epithermal Au-Ag deposit, Waihi, New Zealand. These minerals are used to interpret the temperature and composition of hydrothermal fluids. The distribution of interstratified illite-montmorillonite and illite indicate that temperatures ranged from 140 to >220¦C, with temperatures above 220¦C predominating. The mineral assemblage of quartz-adularia-chlorite-illite-calcite-pyrite envelops the Empire vein system and stockwork, and reflects formation from an alkali chloride water whereas the mineral assemblage of replacement calcite-interstratified illite û montmorillonite-kaolinite forms a carapace and reflects formation from a CO2-rich steam-heated water. Alkali chloride waters appear responsible for the epithermal Au-Ag mineralisation.

Most of the gold reef mined today in South Africa is approximately 1 m in width with slopes about 30 m long. To prevent production interruptions it is essential that the stopes should not be blasted in sections. The shortage of experienced labour and arduous working conditions at the face dictate the need for simple blasting techniques.Hence, a pyrotechnic blasting system of sequential firing is in use at present, although research work to improve this technique is in progress.

The PACMANUS and Jade deposits are two active hydrothermal fields that are forming massive sulfide deposits at the Pacific rim margin. Both are associated with felsic submarine volcanic rocks and both occur in back-arc settings. However, PACMANUS is associated with almost sediment-free dacites and lies on the crest of a volcanic ridge, whereas Jade occurs in a heavily-sedimented tectonic depression associated with a basement of pumiceous rhyolite. The PACMANUS deposit is richer in Cu and Au, and Jade in Pb. Zinc, Ag, As and Sb contents are similar. Sulfide textures at PACMANUS suggest formation of Cu and Zn sulfides by simultaneous double-diffusion involving inwards-moving seawater mixing with outwards-moving hydrothermal fluid. By contrast, at Jade there is a more complex history of formation where initial growth of barite on the sediment surface, probably associated with microbial activity, formed an impervious cap which trapped higher temperature hydrothermal solutions.

Mining and treatment of gold ore in the Ashanti region at Obuasi, Ghana has been continuous for more than 100 years. Earlier production from this world class deposit can be traced far into the history of West Africa's gold trade. As part of a general development and expansion program, Ashanti Goldfields Corporation (Ghana) recently undertook a program to heap leach oxidized near surface ore. Kappes, Cassiday & Associates was given a major role in the design, equipment supply, installation and start-up management of the 3000 tonne/day heap leach. Unusual conditions included a high annual rainfall and an ore which could be characterized as a soft, decomposed, water saturated schist. Production began in March 1990. Startup problems and their solutions are discussed.

The effects of detonation of downlines and downline-booster systems on lodse-poured charges of 94% porous prilled ammonium nitrate/6% fuel oil (AN/FO) were determined. Detonation stability was indicated by the initiation-failure pattern of detonating fuse witness lines located at intervals along the charge. Steel tubing was used as the confining medium. Charge diameters (d) varied between 2-21/32 and 8.1/8 in. and specific charge weights (w) of downlines between 4.0 and 93.2gr/ft. The axes of charge and downline were colinear. The minimum value of w required to cause initiation of AN/FO increased with d. When initiated by a downline only, the charge'underwentlowòorder detonation. When downline-booster systems are used, the detonation wave in the downline cuts all equatorial planes in the charge before the detonation wave in the surrounding AN/FO. If the downline itself does not cause initiation, therefore, the explosive ahead of the main detonation wave is crushed, and hence desensitised, by the radially-expanding compression wave and gases generated by the downline. In a given equatorial plane, the fraction gftharge undergoing detonation decreases with an increase in the booster-plane distance. I take it the character of addresses to conventions, should, following precedent, avoid details, and treat subjects rather from a philosophical point of view so far as they will permit.In the subject about to be treated on, an endeavour will be made to find here we stand as regards the past, in order that we may the better, hope to look correctly in the direction to be followed.It may be assumed that the main object of the Institute is to forward mining interests and the ways in which engineers can aid those interests are many. If all of us were to try to follow many of those interests we should become like" jacks of all trades and masters of none". Mining engineering is consequently subdivided, all are necessary to the common end, and it is on one of those divisions I have undertaken to address you. The subject or steam pumping is a large one, and I regret, not having received such longer notice as would have enabled me to do better justice to the subject, and more respectful regard for yourselves. I must, however, under the circumstances, crave your generous consideration, and hope the topics mentioned may furnish material for discussion and future papers of far more value than this one, Ind.eed, the subject is so illtimately and historically associated with mining that if treated on its merits would be highly interesting or could be made so in more capable hands.

A basic question in preparing this review was how to define sulphur mineral occurrences as being associated with the Pacific Rim. This question will be reconsidered later. The isotope composition of sulphur- containing minerals may be considered in terms of two primary sources - 1. deep- seated sulphur, devoid of crustal contam- ination with a 634S value near 00/0o and 2. oceanic sulphate which fluctuated in value between +10 and +300/00 over geological time (Claypool et al., 1980). However, minerals have seldom been directly derived from these primary sources as even evaporites have been dissolved and reprecipitated. The marine source is differentiated biochemically and isotopically in recent sediments where sulphide from bacterial sulphate reduction may be significantly depleted in 31S. The question of chemical interaction of ascend- ing magma with upper crustal rocks has become one of degree rather than whether or not it occurs. Mineral deposition is considered increasingly in terms of mixing of fluids and their chemical reactions with rocks rather than direct precipitation from magmas or hydrothermal fluids derived from them.

The development of the Moura Coal Preparation Plant is described, commencing with the first'stage of the plant commissioned in 1963. The subsequent expansion stages are traced through to October, 1973. The plant has undergone frequent stages of expansion and modification and this process is continuing. The development programme for 1974 is described as proposed in late 1973. The characteristics of the Moura and Kianga field coal seams with respect to washability are summarised and some comment is made on the blending of these coals prior to washing, to ensure production of export grade coal within specification.

Methane and fire hazards have a vital effect on work safety and continuity of mining plant operation. In the 1990s, the SMP hazards monitoring and ventilation control systems, based on continuous measurement of air parameters, were put into operation at nearly 30 Polish mines. These systems provide continuous measurement of methane concentration within the range of zero to 100 per cent with automatic switching off of electrical energy immediately after detection of potentially explosive conditions. Early detection of coal spontaneous combustion and open fires is made by continuous measurements of CO, CO2, smoke and O2 content in mine air as well as temperature changes in air and rock mass. The essence of the system is intrinsic safety of all underground instrumentation and uninterrupted central power supply from the surface. All abnormal and critical states are signalled to the mine control room. These trigger alarm and emergency procedures. The computer based ventilation monitoring and control system also performs the function of an expert system for fire detection and underground fire fighting. The mine control operator (dispatcher) makes use of stored data in computer escape route schemes and procedures for the safe withdrawal of miners from hazardous areas. The operator can put in motion intrinsically safe alarm signalling units and banners with programmed messages indicating escape routes.

Magnetic Separators have a wide application in dry separation processes, frequently in conjunction with High Tension Separation. Dry processes can frequently be superior to established processes in more commonplace mineral associations. A system of dynamics is postulated and the forces operating ar'e examined, together with a method of evaluating the effect of operating variables. Practical applications of these theories to obtain optimum results on an individual separator, and various separations using a laboratoryroll type separator are described.Practical Flowsheets are of two main types, the first consisting of a series of scalping operations, the second for rougher, cleaner, and scavenger operations with middling recirculation. Some common separation problems with certain mineral associations illustrate the need for different approaches for different mineral associations. A table of mineral separation characteristics is appended, from which amenability may be tentatively estimated.INTRODUCTIONMagnetic separators are widely used, either alone or in conjunction with other wet and dry concentration devices, for the upgrading of a variety of minerals. The high standards of efficiency attainable in dry mills, together with reduced operating and labour costs, are slowly becoming apparent in a wide variety of plants. The combination of wet and dry concentration plant familiar in beach sand mining is finding application for such processes as upgrading a crushed chromite product, and production of clean scheelite,cassiterite, and other concentrates. Other dry beneficiation processes (such as the high tension beneficiation of iron ore, and the benefiGiation of asbestos) avoid the use of wet processes completely.Dry separation processes are likely to be applied more widely as their possibilities become more generally known.

The Lihir gold operation, located in the New Ireland Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG), approximately 900 km north of Port Moresby, was commissioned in 1997 under the management of the Lihir Management Company, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto. This management period ended in 2005 with Lihir Gold Limited (LGL) becoming self-managed. LGL is now the largest listed company in PNG and a top tier mining company in Australia. The focus of the operation since 2005 has been to take advantage of strong market conditions to increase cash flow while driving operating costs into the lowest quartile of gold producers. During this period production has increased through capital expansions, most notably with the addition of a flotation circuit, and through culture change and efficiency improvements. The next step forward for the Lihir operation is a major plant upgrade to increase production to an average of around one million ounces per annum by matching the ore processing rate to the ore mining rate. The key benefits of this project will be the addition of approximately 240 000 ounces per annum of gold production, the access to an additional one million ounces of gold and the ability to meet all stockpiling requirements. The Lihir operation has come out of the boom period in a strong position, is undertaking a major upgrade at a time when prices are low and labour is available, and will be positioned to take advantage of future opportunities as they arise.

Over the past 75 years, the mining of platinum has predominantly focused on the Merensky Reef horizon in the western Bushveld region of the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC) of South Africa (Figure 1). The orebody is relatively flat dipping at 10¦ to 25¦, narrow tabular in shape and has been mined to a maximum depth of some 1600 m within Anglo Platinum. This has resulted in the installation of up to four generations of shaft systems as mining progressed into reserves at greater depth. In recent years, with the improvement in processing technology and improved economics, in particular with the improved price of palladium, the mining of the UG2 Chromitite Reef is proving economically viable. The UG2 Chromitite Reef occurs below the Merensky Reef in the succession and the normal separation varies from 15 m to 400 m, with the largest separation between the reefs occurring in the eastern region of the BIC. The UG2 Chromitite Reef horizon is now being accessed from existing Merensky mining infrastructure by cross-cutting back through the stratigraphy where appropriate, or by establishing new decline cluster systems from surface, along the extensive strike length of the various mining properties. These declines are generally established utilising mechanised mining techniques. This paper gives an overview of the techno-economic approaches considered and evaluated for the selection of the optimum mining and shaft systems. More specifically, the paper reviews the design parameters used, techno-economics, conveyor versus haul alternatives, logistics simulations, capital costs, system performance, time to market or ramp-up success, important system differences and lessons learnt.

It is indeed an honour to address the perth branch of the australian institute of mining and metallurgy and to have the opportunity to talk to you about the future role of upgraded ilmenite on t102 feedstock supply and demand. There have been many papers written on upgraded ilmenite supply and demand and now I would like to share with you QIT's view of the situation first, a word about demand, although I will be talking principally on the supply issue. The principal use of t102 is in the manufacture of pigments which, in turn, are used in paints, plastics, and the paper industry together with a few miscellaneous uses, while a further b% or so of t102 minerals are consumed for the manufacture of titanium metal and for the manufacture of welding electrodes. the total demand for contained t102 is of the order-of 3 million tons per annum, and the general consensus in the industry is that growth rates should be of the order of 2% annually- it is against this backdrop that suppliers must compete with one another and produce least cost materials for the pigment industry. At the moment, supplies are relatively tight, but the generally slow growth in demand coupled with the abundance of titanium bearing minerals should ensure that long term the reverse is generally true. Now, let us examine the supply situation. Titanium is the 9th most abundant element in the earth's crust, so the problem from the producers` point of view is not one of scarcity of titanium minerals, but of how to extract most economically t102 feedstocks from a wide variety of choices- up to the present, all titanium feedstocks are being derived from either rutile or ilmenite rutile, at about 95% t102 content, is indeed a premier raw material which does suffer from potential scarcity and rutile supplies will likely be a diminishing factor in future decades- whereas ilmenite, a combination of iron and titanium oxides found in varying ratios, may be found in huge quantities all over the world.

THERE is available a considerable amount of literature concerning the practice, and, to a smaller extent, the theory of ventilation as it applies to coal mines. Publications considering the subject of ventilation of metal mines from a practical viewpoint are much less numerous, whilst the treatment of the theoretical aspect of the question (except in so far as is common to coal mining) appears to have been almost neglected. This may be due to one of two causes (a) That in many metal mines (especially those which have not attained a great depth), on account of the greater number of connections with the surface, as compared with coal mines, natural ventilation has sufficed.(b) That in metal mines where the foregoing is not the case the solution of the ventilation problem from theoretical considerations has been regarded as involving so many complications that any attempt at the determination of a set of concrete ventilation figures applying to and throughout the mine would be futile. Whilst it is freely admitted that the difficulties inherent in the application of theory to the ventilation of metal mines are numerous, it must also be admitted that few attempts have been made to overcome them. The ultimate aim, of course, would be the collection of sufficient data to enable the probable behaviour of the air-currents throughout the whole of the workings of any mine to be accurately predicted under any particular set of circumstances. An overburden blast utilising horizontal blast holes was successfully attempted at the Ulan Coal Mines during December 1991. The blast reduced operational problems and costs and improved dragline productivity in an area of that contains poorly consolidated sands and clays overlying very hard Permian strata.The fan shaped shot consisted of seven 250 mm diameter holes between 80 and 95 metres long drilled into the highwall face. The holes were loaded with ICI Powergel Gold 25606 bulk Emulsion explosive. The design powder factor was 0.15 kg/bcm for the total shot of 180 000 bcros and 0.44 kg/bcm for the competent Permian strata into which the holes were drilled. Fragmentation from the horizontal blast was comparable to areas conventual blasted. Following the success of this shot further shots are planned for this area.
