Technological advancements in mineral processing have increased the feasibility of refining low-grade ores. Because of this progression and continual depletion of high-grade ore deposits, much larger volumes of waste material are produced. At the same time, increasing environmental legislation and cost competitiveness dictate that these wastes be disposed of in a manner that is both environmentally acceptable and economically viable. To achieve these criteria, many mineral processing industries are dewatering waste streams in order to reduce the volume of tailings and increase water and reagent recovery. The subsequent dry disposal of these highly concentrated mineral tailings requires a thorough understanding of the effects of dewatering on the flow characteristics. Dry disposal represents a paradigm shift in engineering. The tailings are engineered to suit the disposal requirements, as opposed to engineering a facility to accommodate the tailings. It is therefore important to understand how the material properties and operational parameters can be modified to produce the desired tailings flow and deposition characteristics. As concentrated suspensions usually exhibit non-Newtonian behaviour, determination of the disposal plant operating conditions requires a thorough understanding of the rheological characteristics of the material. The implementation and optimisation of dry disposal methods involves three concurrent and interdependent rheological studies to determine:the concentration required to achieve the optimum spreading and drying characteristics of the tailings once deposited; the optimum conditions for pipeline transport; and the feasibility of dewatering the slurry to the required concentration. The paper presents an overview of the issues pertinent to management of the flow properties and processing of dewatered waste streams.

Twelve years ago, Jeffrey Mining Machinery Division of Dresser Industries Inc. developed the 120H HELIMINER. This machine was the world's first fixed-drum continuous miner and soon became the standard among manufacturers of continuous miners throughout the mining machinery industry. This paper will first outline a brief history of continuous miner development, then discuss significant parameters which are essential to a successful continuous miner design, and finally describe a number of specific applications of Jeffrey continuous miners in a variety of materials, such as coal, potash, iron ore, and trona, around the world.

The Girilambone Copper Mine is located in central New South Wales and has been operational since May 1993. Girilambone is operated by the Girilambone Copper Company (GCC) which is a joint venture between Straits Resources (60 per cent) and Nord Resources (40 per cent). The mine complex consists of an open cut pit, ore crushing and stacking, heap leaching, solvent extraction (SX) and electrowinning (EW) allowing for the recovery of 14 600 tpa of LME grade A cathode copper. The leaching and SX-EW plant have been described previously by Rear, Taylor and Busby (1994) and Miller (1994).

The ownership, policies, organisation, structure, market, financial considerations and communications of a large resource project vary significantly through its discovery, feasibility, development and production phases. The extent of these changes, from discovery in 1957 through to 1979, is examined for the Mt. Newman iron ore project in the Pilbara region of Western Australia and some of the factors that influenced it are detailed. This shows that only some of the influences are under the control of the mine owner/operator, despite their significant impact on the returns for the massive capital invested. The effect of the general business climate on the various phases is also examined.

Gold at Renco occurs in association with pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and quartz and is confined to a series of brittle fractures and fault breccias (reefs) preferentially developed within an anastomosing ductile shear zone. During late Archaean crustal movements both the orebody and the enclosing host rocks were deformed within a series of east-north-east striking, southerly dipping, shear zones. The reefs within these shear zones are now texturally different to those away from the shear zones, and this difference is reflected by differences in the way the gold is distributed in the two reef types. These differences are not taken irto account by the software package currently being used to generate kriged plans of gold grade and reef thickness and this may explain some of the inaccuracies found in these plans.

Potential hlghwaJl mining reserves in Australia are large, but geotechnical and operating conditions are quite different from those where highwall mining has evolved in the USA. In order to achieve safe and effective resource recovery, equipment and procedures should be developed to penetrate 250 m in the Australian mining environment. This paper identifies key auributes to be incorporated in such machinery and methodology. These suggestions are intended to promote discussion on innovations to satisfy Australian requirements for highly productive, safe and environmentally acceptable techniques.

Resin encapsulated rock bolting practices have been adopted by Mount Isa Mines since the early-1980s. Fully encapsulated rock bolt systems meet designated requirements for long-term ground support in the mines. A variety of rock bolts, resins and installation methods have been utilised over this period in underground mining. As a parallel to this evolving application, Mount Isa Mines have tested various resin encapsulated rock bolt systems. Testing has included routine underground pull testing and the development and implementation of the push test for the entire encapsulated bolt length. The latter test enables a greater understanding and representation to be had of the overall mixing, level of encapsulation and capacity of the system. Rock mechanics at Mount Isa Mines undertake evaluation of new bolt systems that become available, in addition to the maintenance of compliance with quality control measures for the existing systems. Improved methods of installation and systems are also investigated to further the cost-effective nature and minimise risks associated with resin rock bolt practices.

Production from the Cattle Grid orebody commenced in August, 1974. This followed a recent discovery arising from an extensive exploration programme involving stratigraphic drilling, geochemistry and geophysics. Located some 4 km west of the original copper occurrences at Pernatty Lagoon the discovery was found to contain 4.6 million tonnes of ore averaging 2.4% copper. The ore is a "sandstone copper" type localised near the disconformity between two Precambrian (Adelaidean) stratigraphic units, the Pandurra Formation and the Whyalla Sandstone. The mineralisation roughly follows the interface between these units and occurs in fractures, vugs and along bedding planes. The mineralogical character of the ore is somewhat complex consisting of chalcocite and bornite, with associated chalcopyrite, sphalerite, pyrite and other less common sulphides. 1. In-situ experiments were performed in a tunnel built in loess soil with the displace- ment components of the tunnel lining and the acceleration components of the tracks measured during the passing of trains. The measured parameters were then studied by the spectral method. As a result, the dynamic forces of trains was simulated numerically and a deter- ministic dynamic nonlinear analysis was carried out by means of finite element method. The results obtained by two different approaches were in fair coincidence. Results of the study indicate, that the low and medium frequency components of the dynamic train loading would be crucial for the dynamic responses of the tunnel lining and surrounding mass, and their effects would increase with the speed of passing trains within a certain range.

The microbial, microaerobic, biodegradation of cryptomelane-rich and pyrolusite-rich samples of manganese oxides was studied in repeated five-day static batch cultures over II weeks. Manganous ion was leached/reduced faster from the cryptomelane-rich samples (average 510 mg Mn2+/1/d) than from the pyrolusite samples (average 442 mg Mn2+/1/d).Cultures contained 20 per cent (w/vl) manganese mude, five per cent (w/v) molasses nutrient and the end-of-batch bacterial cell numbers were approximately 1010 cells/ml. The cryplomelane-rich sample incubates became more acid with time than the pyrolusite-rich incubates. The breakdown of pyrolusite proceeds in a relatively uniform way, while cryplomelane indicates a stepwise destabilisation.

We present plate tectonic reconstructions, showing that porphyry-type ore deposits are spatially and temporally linked to ridge subduction. A reconstruction of the Peruvian subduction system reveals an immediate metallogenic response to the arrival of the Nazca Ridge at the subduction trench, followed by southward migration of the zone of metallogenic activity due to the lateral migration of the zone of ridge subduction. A similar pattern is recognised in central Chile , where the spatio-temporal distribution of giant ore deposits coincides with the arrival of the Juan Fernandez hotspot chain at the subduction zone. We conclude that there is a spatial and temporal link between ridge subduction and ore deposit formation, with high metal fluxes concentrated in zones of ridge subduction. Thus, the recognition of tectonic patterns associated with ridge subduction can provide insights into predictive mineral discovery by enhancing our ability to predict the position of large mineral deposits in other modern and ancient orogens. The West Coast of South Africa is well known for its placer gem quality diamond deposits and also associated with these hosts of Cenozoic unconsolidated marine and aeolian sand and gravel are significant concentrations of heavy minerals. Exploration for economic concentrations of zircon, ilmenite and rutile along the coast started in the mid-1980s. This resulted in the discovery of an inferred 1.6 billion tonne resource with a grade of ten per cent total heavy minerals (THM), which developed into the Namakwa Sands Mine, a world-class producer of heavy minerals. Several other resources, including satellite deposits proximal and distal to the mine area, extensive diamond mine dumps and present day beach placers, demonstrate the vast heavy mineral potential along the West Coast. The favourable gangue to economic mineral ratio, a higher zircon content compared to other similar deposits, relatively lower U+TH content of zircon, low slimes content and effectively pristine low chromium-manganese ilmenite of these deposits, render them attractive exploration targets. Negative factors that will affect conventional mineral beneficiation and liberation include secondary mineral coatings and the regional coastal development of several layers of superimposed duricrust. The economically attractive heavy mineral assemblage along the West Coast is the result of erosion of the proximal, gneissic Namaqualand Metamorphic Province and mature Table Mountain Group sandstone, concentration by marine and aeolian processes and preservation under arid climatological conditions over a period of more than 100 Ma.

Pacific Coal Pty Limited (a wholly owned subsidiary of CRA Limited) managed the interests of six members of a joint venture formed to mine and export eight million tonnes of export quality steaming coal from a mine developed at Blair Athol in the Bowen Basin of the Central Queensland coal fields. The mine is now operated by Blair Athol Coal Pty Ltd. Crooks Michell Peacock Stewart Pty Limited (CMPS) was awarded a project management and engineering contract for the total mine portion. Following a feasibility study, CMPS carried out an Optimisation Study which produced changes to the design of the project, thus resulting in the project budget being reduced by some A$13 million. In spite of a number of late additions to the scope of work, the project was completed at a final cost of A$148 million, many millions below the reduced project budget. The project was also completed several months ahead of schedule. Total services were provided to take the project from feasibility stage through to the establishment of an operational facility and included project management, planning and control, accounting and financial control, as well as the organisation of engineering, procurement, construction, industrial plant commissioning, and technical training matters.

A combination of high virgin rock temperatures, deep workings and extensive utilisation of heavy diesel equipment has presented North Mine (A Division of North Broken Hill Limited) with challenging ventilation problems. These problems have been addressed in a variety of ways which include in the order of 6000 kM of underground refrigeration. The future of North Mine depends on the successful development and extraction of ore in excess of 1100 m below the shaft collar using mechanised cut and fill mining. The success of this will depend on the installation of a complex chilled water reticulation circuit in this area. This will involve planning and constriction of a number of large dams, installation of pups and turbines, and the successful commissioning of several large water to air heat exchangers.

Overburden removal, mining and reclamation are now accepted as the basic operational steps involved in the winning of coal by open cut methods. To attain the lowest operational cost, the recontouring and revegetation of spoilpiles must be planned concurrently with the planning of overburden removal and mining. The earthworks associated with reclamation work on spoilpiles often account for 75 - 90 per cent of total reclamation costs. Experience at Callide Mine has shown that the way that spoilpiles are contoured does influence water retention and can reduce erosion from rainfall run-off. However, provided the recontoured slopes meet'Mines Department specifications, the quality of reclamation work is judged not by the quality of the earthworks but by the plant regrowth on the reshaped surface. Thus it is the quality of the revegetation which is of prime importance. For vegetation to be successful, time must be spent on planned research into methods of overcoming plant nutrient deficiencies and selection of suitable grass and tree species. In nature, ilmenite (FeTiO3) undergoes weathering through oxidation and removal of Fe to form an apparently continuous series of compositions from ilmenite to pseudorutile (ideally Fe2Ti3O9), and with further weathering, to leucoxene. To determine the mechanism of acid-leaching of ilmenite to ultimately form rutile, we have carried out an experimental study of ilmenite alteration in autoclaves at 150¦C in HCl solutions. Resulting products were studied by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe and Raman spectroscopy. In some experiments the solution was initially enriched in 18O and the distribution of the isotope in the alteration products mapped from the peak shift in the Raman spectra. The results indicate that the alteration may proceed in two stages, each with a sharp interface between the parent phase and the product. The alteration begins at the original ilmenite crystal surface and along cracks through which the fluid can migrate. The first alteration product is pseudorutile û no phases intermediate between ilmenite and pseudorutile were detected. The textural relationship between ilmenite and pseudorutile suggests a coupled dissolution-reprecipitation mechanism rather than a solid state continuous oxidation and Fe diffusion mechanism. The second stage involves a further dissolution-reprecipitation step to form rutile. Raman spectroscopy shows that the 18O is incorporated in the rutile during the recrystallisation. Throughout the alteration process the original morphology of the ilmenite is preserved although the product is highly porous. The rutile inherits crystallographic information from the parent ilmenite, resulting in a triply-twinned rutile microstructure.

Fluid flow in a 1:14 scale water model of the shaft and settler of the Kalgoorlie Nickel flash smelter has been investigated by flow visualisation and numerical modelling. Detailed flow fields through the reaction shaft, settling chamber and uptake are presented for flow rates up to 800 Vm and a number of burner configurations. The predicted flow fields were compared with experimental data obtained from streak photographs and video recordings. The effects of cessation of flow through individual burners and changes in shaft dimensions were also Investigated.

This paper deals briefly with productivity-enhancing advances in shaft sinking technology in South Africa post-World War II in general and the developments and application of long rounds since the 1980s in particular and is amply illustrated.It touches on the conversion to circular section, concrete lined shafts, the introduction of tungsten carbide drill bit inserts and grab lashing; expounds the rationale driving the development of longer rounds; and then describes the evolution of long rounds using hand-held and mechanically mounted rockdrills in South Africa and Canada by both local and foreign contractors. The recent experience gained on the sinking of the South Deep Main Shaft follows. Results obtained from this experiment are tabulated and commented upon. The paper concludes with the postulation of æwhat nextÆ and æwhere toÆ scenarios. Addenda include a list of shaft rounds in excess of three metres in length blasted in the Main Shaft at South Deep and their results, typical round design, manufacturerÆs specifications for the 6 m shaft jumbo and rock drills.

Since the days of mandatory high cost pilot plant testing in 6 ft + 2 ft SAG mills autogenous griding/semi-autogenous grinding (AG/SAG), mill specific energy is now calculated by various empirical formulae and pilot testing carried out in small laboratory mills. Barratt (1989) described a method using Bond Indices than adding a single factor of 1.25 to arrive at the AG/SAG specific energy. In 1991 the Canadians developed the SAGPower Index (SPI), test using 2 kg of material in a 300 mm diameter mill. This test has been further developed by Starkey, Hindstrom and Orser (2006). This test now includes a Bond Ball mill work index test.The Macpherson test is still being offered by some testing facilities. This dry test requires at least 180 kg of material.Morrell (2004) formulated an AG/SAG specific energy generator based on a drop weight index Value (DWi). This DWi value is related to the Ab parameter and the material specific gravity. Morrell reconfigured the BondÆs Third Theory formula to cause extra power requirements to be inputed. This technique incorporates the material specific gravity (SG). The AG/SAG specific energy values produced using this method are susceptible to higher values of crushing and rod mill work indices.This paper offered describes a more simple method to generate AG/SAG specific energies. This programme incorporates Bond work indices, the JKMRC parameter Ab measuring impact breakage and the parameter ta measuring the abrasion rate, then employs a series of efficiency values nominated for each transition size (AG/SAG T80). These efficiency values have been compiled over the years from actual operating plants and documented reports.CITATION:Burgess, D, 2012. Three cross sections, 200 m apart, display the distribution of indicator hydrothermal minerals across the Empire zone of the Golden Cross epithermal Au-Ag deposit, Waihi, New Zealand. These minerals are used to interpret the temperature and composition of hydrothermal fluids. The distribution of interstratified illite-montmorillonite and illite indicate that temperatures ranged from 140 to >220¦C, with temperatures above 220¦C predominating. The mineral assemblage of quartz-adularia-chlorite-illite-calcite-pyrite envelops the Empire vein system and stockwork, and reflects formation from an alkali chloride water, whereas the mineral assemblage of replacement calcite-interstratified illite - montmorillonite- kaolinite forms a carapace and reflects formation from a C02-rich steam-heated water. Alkali chloride waters appear responsible for the epithermal Au-Ag mineralisation.
