Several mineral resources have been recognised to alkaline igneous rocks. In general, these mineralisations present low P grades, so a complex concentration process is required to achieve commercial grade concentrates. This process is guided not only by the ore characteristics, such as apatite grain size and liberation degree, gangue minerals and slimes content, but also by different apatite varieties, iron oxi-hydroxide surface coating and roughness. The main techniques applied to apatite and phosphate ore characterisation, such as optical microscopy, cathodoluminescence (CL) microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), surface techniques and magnetic separation are discussed, aiming to evaluate distinct apatite varieties and their technological behaviour.

Close circuiting autogenous and semi-autogenous mills is anenergy efficient way of grinding and a number of operations haveutilised this in the design of their comminution circuits. Owing tothe large flow of slurry through the mill that results fromoperating this way the grates and pulp lifters have to be designedto cope. However, the literature has little or no information onhow grate and pulp lifter size and design are related to theirability to remove slurry from the mill. Over the last few years theJKMRC has been researching this area and has developedrelationships between grate/pulp lifter design and flowratecapacity. At the same time it has determined the major causes ofpulp lifter inefficiency and a solution to preventing thisinefficiency (the Twin Chamber Pulp Lifter). This paperdescribes the models that have been developed through thisprogram and uses industrial scale data to illustrate their accuracy.Results from the industrial trials of the Twin Chamber PulpLifter are also presented.

This paper describes the laboratory study implemented to investigate the application of the subaerial technique to tailings disposal for the proposed Olympic Dam Mine. The results of the study and the resulting design parameters are presented. The subaerial technique of tailings disposal is described and the advantages of the method for disposal in arid climates highlighted.

The iron ore deposits in India are rich in iron content but usually contains high alumina and silica. The current industrial practice results three products namely lump, fines and slimes. The lump and fines with or without beneficiation are directly fed to the blast furnace and sintering plant respectively while the super fines or slimes are presently discarded as tailings. Around eight million tonnes of iron ore slimes estimated as being 15 - 20 per cent by weight of run of mine ore containing ~48 - 62 per cent Fe, is discarded every year causing huge loss to the Indian iron ore industry. In addition, these slimes stored in massive tailing ponds pose enormous environmental and ecological problems. Extensive investigations have been carried out on three iron ore slimes generated at Barsua, Bolani and Meghahatuburu iron ore mines of India. The studies include physical, chemical, mineralogical characterisation and beneficiation studies adopting conventional hydroclyclone and wet high intensity magnetic separator. The characterisation studies have indicated that most of the gangue minerals are accumulated in finer fractions. The studies on hydrocyclone and magnetic separation had indicated that an iron concentrate of 61 - 65 per cent Fe could be obtained by recovering 59 - 78 per cent of the iron values present in the slimes. Depending on the nature of the slimes the alumina and silica levels have been brought down to 2.5 and 1.0 per cent respectively. The effects of different operating and design variables along with detailed characterisation studies have been highlighted.

In the last 15 years, it has become increasingly popular to win gold and silver from carbon strip solutions with electrolytic æsludgeÆ cells. The precious metal sludges produced in the cells are washed to the cell bottom and pumped into filters. Most new operations are specifying sludging cells, and many older operations are being retrofitted with up-to-date electrolytic sludge cells and filters. The new sludging cells are generally more energy efficient than older cells, but more importantly, the cell operations to remove product are much less labour intensive, cleaner, and the operator need not have physical contact with the electrolytically produced metal. A case study of a major North American gold producer (50 000 kg/yr) that removed old style stainless steel wool cathode cells and installed new sludging cells and sludge filters is presented. The effect of various impurities is discussed.

The Racecourse Orebodies at Mount Isa consist of a series of parallel steeply dipping lead/zinc/silver orebodies with a strike length of up to 1000 metres. Production from these orebodies between 13 Level to 9 Level has been by a series of cut and fill stopes in two level stages, leaving a crown pillar at 11 level. Development of the 15 level to 13 level extraction stage has recently been completed. The layout consists of a series of parallel stopes over a strike length of 1200 metres. Access to the stopes is by two declines connecting the stopes with a series of crosscuts This paper describes the basic layout with development and production methods employed.

With some notable exceptions, marine placers located just below, or just above, present sea level, are responsible for much of today's production of detrital ilmenite, rutile, zircon, and other minerals of value. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the paleogeographic and paleo-oceanographic factors which may have determined the location of presently submerged marine placers. These factors-include changes in sea level, burial by recent marine sediments, stream capture and other i changes in drainage patterns, and recent changes in climate. Selected geologic situations in the Yellow Sea off the coast of Korea, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Portugal, in the Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska, and in the Arabian Sea off the coast of India, will be used to illustrate the author's point of view.

During devolatilisation, physical behaviour of coals was investigated in horizontal electrically heated furnace with an inert gas atmosphere, and gasification rates of four coal chars and coke were measured thermogravimetrically in a carbon dioxide atmosphere at temperatures in the range 1100oC - 1500oC. The volume change of chars was also measured in horizontal electrically heated furnace at various temperatures. Both reactivity and the activation energy for the gasification of coal chars were found to be strongly influenced by pore structure and the carbonisation conditions employed during preparation. CO2 reactivity of chars increases with increasing reaction temperature, and particularly increases more rapidly over 1300¦C. CO2 reactivity of coke is lower than that of non-coking coal chars in the range of 1100¦C to 1500¦C. CO2 reactivity of chars with smaller pore area and bigger pore diameter is less than that of chars with bigger pore area and smaller pore diameter. During gasification, the volume of chars did not change significantly at the lower temperatures of 1100¦C and 1200¦C, but at the high temperatures, 1300¦C to 1500¦C, the volume of chars quickly decreased due to ash softening and melting. The CO2 reactivities of the chars are controlled by the mixed control of chemical reaction and pore diffusion in the temperature range 1100¦C to 1300¦C, and by bulk diffusion in the temperature range 1400¦C to 1500¦C.

The physical properties of monazite and the minerals with which it is associated in east coast beach sands are studied and discussed. Possible means for improving recovery are examined. In particular, it is suggested that the practice of splitting the heavy mineral concentrate into two parts as a preliminary to treatment in separate "rutile" and "zircon" mills can be modified in a simple fashion by the addition of an extra magnetic separation stage so as to aid monazite recovery.INTRODUCTIONBeach sand deposits on the east coast of Australia are a major source of rutile and zircon, and supply 80 per cent or more of world requirements. The deposits also contain a small amount of monazite, averaging about 0.5 per cent of the total heavy minerals. Yet despite a steady price in recent years of £150-160 per ton, monazite production has remained relatively small.On the basis of rutiIe production, potential monazite production on the east coast was about 1,500 tons in 1956, but only 102 tons of high-grade concentrate was produced. The main deterrent to increased production has probably been the capital cost of the necessary equipment. Separate electrostatic and magnetic equipment and separate table concentration and drying constitute a considerable outlay for a by-product contributing 4 to 5 per cent of the revenue from rutiIe.It is the purpose of this paper to discuss monazite concentration generally and to suggest modifications to flowsheets, which may facilitate monazite production while maintaining the main objective, simple and cheap means for maximum rutile production.

The Olympic Dam Project constitutes a major resource of Copper and Uranium and has been under intensive evaluation since the discovery in 1975.A 500 metre deep rectangular shaft has been sunk into the deposit and this has been followed by 8400 metres of level, incline and decline development. 5 surface ventilation raises have also been constructed.Large scale trackless equipment is used to carry out the development, and productivity statistics are given.The paper describes the functionalised system used in the development program and discusses the maintenance support, and services required to carry out these works.The objectives of the Exploration Development program and the satisfactory results obtained from this work are also discussed.

The Tsugaru Tunnel, located on the Honshu island approach to the Seikan Tunnel, is 5,880 m long and has a "Shinkansen" cross section of 90 m2 area. The geological formation through which the tunnel passes consists of very soft rock most of which is unsolidified sandstone belonging to the Neogen. The permeability coefficient is in the range of 10-2 to 10-4 cm/s and being water bearing with a high ground water level, the ground is unstable and subject to soil outflow phenomenon. Kajima Corporation, undertaking the Futamata Construction Section (1,420 m long), excavated the tunnel by the upper half heading method with side pilots employing the following countermeasures to cope with these severe conditions.

Based upon specialised experience of rope mechanics spanning over 20 years, this paper reviews the processes of degradation and fatigue that are relevant to hoisting ropes in mines. The review is brought up to date with an account of the most recent work in this field, which identifies a torsional fatigue process and quantifies the impact of degradation upon the residual service life. A proper understanding of these processes is important in determining how different parameters of hoist design and operation interact to determine rope life. This knowledge is also important in informing decisions relating to rope discard based upon observed condition, as well is identifying the critical features that must be quantified reliably during inspection.

A fundamental problem in mine planning is that of determining the "optimum pit limit" of a mine. This optimum pit limit yields information which is considered essential in the evaluation of the economic potential of a mineral deposit, and in the formulation of long -, intermediate -, and short-range mine plans. Since the mid 1960's a number of mathematical techniques based on the "block model" have been proposed for solving this problem. When applied to large ore-bodies the implementation of these techniques, especially the more elaborate ones, poses considerable computational problems. In this paper we report on our work, done jointly with Systems Research Institute of Australia (SRIA), in devising strategies for overcoming these Problems.

The Burragorang Valley lies approx. 95 km by road south west of Sydney and some 35 km west of Camden. It is over 80 km in length and varies in width from 3 km to over 16 km. Geologically, the history of the Burragorang Valley is of interest. It was referred to by early geographers and N.R.M.A. booklets as the largest sunken valley in Australia. This description is incorrect as it is a water worn valley formed by the dissection of an uplift in the south western portion of the large Sydney Sedimentary Basin. Ages2 ago there extended right across the Blue Mountains, a continuous tableland into which the Nattai, Wollondilly and Cox's Rivers have carved out the formation of the Burragorang. This dissection together with other valleys such as the Megalong, Jamieson and Grose, formed part of the eastward drainage pattern of the uplifting tableland into the Pacific ocean. With constantly rising energy costs it is ever more important that we look at ways of im- proving comminution efficiency both in terms of power consumed as well as capital costs required for purchasing and installing equipment. I intend to show that commonly used appli- cation criteria, which is presently accepted for designing crushing and screening plants, need drastic revision if it is to be used to accura- tely design, predict and refine performance in new and existing facilities. Unless we can calculate performance accurately, we cannot minimise capital investment and maximize Profitability.

The ore reserves of the Frieda porphyry copper prospect in Papua New Guinea have been estimated using kriging and an alternative method. Only very erratic variograms could be obtained from the raw data and thus it can be expected that kriging variances will be unrel- iable. The frequency distributions of the two sets of estimates show expected differences and the resulting mineable reserves show similar expected differences. More drilling and the use of disjunctive kriging are needed to produce reliable estim- Ates.

Some twelve months of operation at Mount Lyell, using two large diameter ball mills as a two-stage grinding circuit indicated a short- fall in the grinding capability compared with design criteria. Breakage, particularly at coarser sizes, was less efficient than with the previously used grinding circuit comprising a large number of smaller diameter mills. This paper describes both old and new equipment, puts forward the facts as they are presently known, and lists the attempts made to overcome the problem.

This paper examines the new water-hydraulic (hydro powered) drill rigs that have been developed and proven in the last decade primarily in tabular, shallow-dipping, narrow-reef, hard-rock South African mines. These include - drill rigs for flat end tunnel development, narrow inclined raises and winzes, large inclines and declines and long hole based developments such as orepasses and vent raises. The hydropower technology rigs offer advantages both in safety and performance over traditional compressed air powered, hand-held development are generally more cost effective than imported oil electro-hydraulic drill rigs. Furthermore, hydro powered rigs are inherently energy efficient. The benefits of hydropower are discussed and a æcomprehensive development modelÆ is presented which demonstrates that orebodies can be accessed in significantly shorter times. æLocalisedÆ half level hydropower systems are introduced and a range of ancillary equipment available is listed.CITATION:Fraser, P D, 2012. (Quality can be defined as that which is acceptable to the market and can be supplied with a predictable degree of uniformity and dependability at a low cost. The market for any mining product is downstream processing, whether it be an alumina refinery, a gold processing plant or a flotation plant. The cost of that downstream process is partly dependent on uniformity of its feed material both in physical and chemical terms. With more operations adopting procedures which require quality assurances in line with International Standards, from their raw material suppliers, miners must look to their grade control processes to provide uniformity and predicability.This is not a new concept. The mining industry has constantly been working with ahighly variable raw material supplied by Mother Nature, from whom we cannot demand quality assurances. Through the processes of exploration, resource and reserve definition, long and short term mine planning and day to day grade control an end product has been supplied which consistently meets our customers requirements, in an economic fashion. When any of these processes fail, then penalties are incurred which can range from increased mineral processing costs to loss of markets and in the ultimate case, failure of a mining operation.

As shallow coal reserves with easier mining conditions are exhausted, future deep coal mining with difficult mining conditions may face significant economic, technical and environmental challenges. Moreover, due to increased coal production capacity with the new generation longwall systems, predicting adverse mining conditions has become more important than ever before. The potential impact of these difficult conditions is an increase in mining risks and costs. Reliable prediction of rock mass deformation, mine stability and mine water inflow is not only essential for improving mine safety and reduction of coal production costs, but it is also important for the assessment and management of the environmental impact of mining. This paper briefly describes an integrated approach to mine groundwater simulation and prediction. Central to this integrated approach is a three-dimensional computer code called COSFLOW, developed by CSIRO of Australia in collaboration with NEDO and JCOAL of Japan to address the pressing issues of mine water management. COSFLOW incorporates unique features that make it ideal for the simulation of coal mining and examining the interaction between rock fracture, aquifer interference and water flow. This paper also presents an example of an application of the integrated approach and COSFLOW in water inflow prediction at Springvale Mine in New South Wales.
