The combination of shot-firing and stage loader, and a prop and bar support system is an accepted drivage method. The support configuration is based on the final prop density, and assumes relitively uniform load sharing between the props. During the development of a longwall faceline at a medium depth (approximately 600m) British coal mine using such a drivage method, a fall occured overnight, effectively closing approximately 40m of the drivage. The severity and speed of the fall prompted an investigation into the performance of the temporary support system installed prior to chock installation. This paper deals with the investigation which disclosed some major contributory factors towards loss of strata control.

The Ok Tedi porphyry copper and gold mine is an open-pit operation located within the Star Mountains in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea and is situated near the headwaters of the Ok Tedi-Fly River system. The climate is equatorial sub-alpine with rainfall ranging from five to ten metres per year. Mining commenced in 1984 and to-date approximately 500 Mt of waste rock has been produced. A failing waste rock dump system operates whereby the dumps are eroded by tributary creeks of the Ok Tedi. It is estimated that approximately 250 Mt of waste is retained within the upper reaches of the river system. The waste rock comprises both potentially acid forming rock and limestone and to-date the overall waste has been acid consuming. However, the long-term mine plan identifies declining limestone production and hence an increasing risk of acid generation over the remaining years of the operation. A program was initiated to determine the net acid producing potential (NAPP) required (ie target NAPP) to minimise the risk of acid generation within the waste rock dumps. The results from this program provide guidelines for an operational target NAPP strategy to provide sufficient acid buffering across all size fractions in the waste rock dump for long-term ARD control. Implementation of this plan requires additional limestone to be mined and co-disposed with ROM waste rock.

Geochemical exploration continues to play a significant role in new mineral discoveries inAustralia and elsewhere, including terrains where mineralisation is buried or otherwise obscured by regolith cover of various types. Transported regolith commonly restricts the migration of trace elements to surface, especially in arid terrains, presenting a range of problems for traditional geochemical exploration methods that employ surface samples. Regions dominated by transported cover include the northern parts of the Tasmanides in eastern Australia and the Yilgarn Craton which are variably covered by thick alluvium and Mesozoic to Cainozoic sedimentary rocks (Anand and Paine, 2002). Massive sulphide mineralisation at the Miriam prospect, near Coolgardie, Western Australia, is fracture-controlled and associated with disseminated sulphides near the basal contact of an ultramafic lens. The lens is peridotitic in composition with a pyroxenitic zone at its base, and lies within a sequence of altered high-Mg basalts and pillowed tholeiitic basalts. Recrystallisation of the ultramafic rock has resulted in the development of secondary olivine. The average composition of the sulphide fraction of massive ore is Cu = 4.4%, Co = 0.3%, Ni = 23.0%, Fe = 31.8%, S = 40.6%, consisting of the supergene assemblage violarite-pyrite to a depth of 210 m.

The geologic settings, geochemistry of host rocks, mineralogy and metal values in modern back-arc volcanic-hosted massive sulphide (VHMS) mineralisation are very similar to those in many ancient polymetallic VHMS deposits. The geology, distribution and styles of seafloor mineralisation in modem back-arc basins, especially the eastern Manus and Lau Basins, southwest Pacific, are compared to VHMS deposits in the Mount Read and Mount Windsor districts of Australia . Based on exploration and research in modem back-arc settings, geologists are now observing the direct analogues of the polymetallic VHMS deposits currently being exploited in ancient back-arc volcanic belts throughout Australia and the world.

The mineralised members of the Brockman Iron Formation mined at Mt Whaleback are overlain and underlain by shale horizons. To maximise resource recovery, waste movement within the life of mine plan will total approximately 3.3 billion tonnes. Approximately 15 per cent of waste materials contain zones with varying amounts of sulfides and carbon and are referred to as æreactive shaleÆ. Reactive shale has the potential to self-heat and can react with some explosives, resulting in spontaneous explosion. Sulfide rich zones also have the potential to generate acid rock drainage (ARD). Successful mining of reactive shale requires constant co-ordination between the geology, mine planning, mining and environment departments. Safe storage of reactive shale is the focus of ongoing research. Since the mid-1990s, a number of trials have been undertaken at Mt Whaleback in order to further the understanding of the physical and chemical properties of reactive shale. This paper summarises some of these trials, and discusses key learnings arising from interpretation of results. Ultimately, the learnings from this research will provide the guidelines for successful storage of reactive shale.

Estimation of the semi-variogram is basic to the geostatistical processing of data. The most widely used arithmetic average estimator is here employed with various sampling patterns to calculate experimental semi-variograms in a deposit which is simulated to have a defined semi-variogram. Percentage differences between theoretical and experimental semi-variograms are reported.

Tyre cost at Mount Morgan Limited had been 24% of the truck operating cost. Comprehensive tyre testing resulted in a reduction in tyre costs of about one third. A record of the evaluation techniques may enable the selection of tyres that are most suited to particular conditions. Rubber characteristics, rubber quantity, tyre design, road conditions, dump conditions and inflation pressure were found to be sig- nificant variables. Measurements of tyre temperatures at the breaker strip were used to select the tyre design and inflation pressure required for Mount Morgan Limited's conditions. Relugging of tyres was discontinued as a result of tyre testing.

The Kidston Gold Mine i s located in northern Queensland some 2 Ukm northwest of Townsville. I t is the largest gold mine in Australia and produces approximately 25 percent of Australia's gold and one percent of the world's gold.Initially, traditional mining industry management approaches resulted in the rejection of what appeared to be an attractive low-grade deposit as an uneconomic proposition. Critical re-examination revealed that the rejection was based upon managerial inflexibility and traditionally over-conservative methods of mine evaluation, construction, operation, projected commodity prices and contingency factors. Environmental considerations were key factors in the design of the Ranger Uranium Mines treatment plant. The mine is located adjacent to the Kakadu National Park and has an average rainfall of 1.6m per annum. Initially, no contaminated water or liquid effluents are to be released from the project area and thus water management is a key design and operating fact. Particulate and gas emission criteria influenced design as did occupational hygiene factors (dust, radon, housekeeping, maintenance access). Equipment selection and engineering standards were conservative and resulted in the plant attaining design performance in less than three months from the date of commissioning. A number of mechanical and operational problems were experienced and are discussed in the paper, however none of these problems have had a significant effect on production.

This paper documents the relationship between material handling and processing costs compared to blasting cost. The old adage, 'The cheapest crushing is done in the pit', appears accurate in this case study. Comparison of the accumulated cost of powder, selected wear materials and electricity, indicate a strong, inverse correlation with powder factor (lbs powder/long ton of rock). In this case, the increased powder cost is more than offset by electrical savings alone. Measurable, overall costs decline while shovel and crusher productivity rise by about five per cent when powder factor rises by 15 per cent. These trends were previously masked by the effects of weather, ore grade fluctuations and accounting practices.

Solid Energy New Zealand Limited (æSolid EnergyÆ) is a state-owned coal mining company, producing 4.0 Mtpa from a number of opencast and underground mines in the Huntly, West Coast and Southland regions in New Zealand. The company currently exports 2.1 Mtpa of coking coal. Exports are expected to grow strongly over the next five year as the company expands production into new semi-soft and thermal coal reserves. Domestic coal demand is also expected to grow strongly, particularly in the North Island, as the Maui gas field reserves diminish, and thermal coal becomes more important for electricity generation and meeting the energy needs of forest processing and other industries. Detailed studies of the microstructures and compositions of zinc and lead blast furnace sinters have been undertaken. An analysis of the results obtained has indicated that in many cases the microstructures of these complex materials can be explained by the solidification of melts from pseudo-ternary phase systems. Further laboratory studies have been carried out to more accurately determine the extent of primary phase fields and the liquidus temperatures in the appropriate binary and ternary systems. This approach shows considerable promise in simplifying the descriptions of slag systems used in oxidising and reduction smelting processes for lead and zinc recovery.

Roof falls and failures of powered supports were major threats at longwall face. Abnormal geological conditions were caused roof falls and shield damage. Therefore continuous monitoring and analysis of strata behaviour was imperative on real time for forecasting adverse behaviour. Novel PXI instrumentation system was successfully developed for continuous monitoring and analysis of supports pressure, leg closure and gate roads convergence. However, this paper briefly examines the novel gate roads convergence monitoring system with field applications.

Decarbonisation of the steel industry has recently attracted a lot of research and technological development. Most of the technological developments are centred around the replacement of blast furnace (BF), which has been the main primary smelting furnace in the ironmaking step of steel production. Replacement of the BF is not an easy task because of BF’s many established capabilities over the years, especially its ability to use low-grade iron feed. In this regard, Metso has developed its own technology, Metso’s Outotec direct reduced iron (DRI) smelting furnace, to tackle this problem. The recently developed six-in line electric furnace for DRI smelting can be used for primary smelting of DRI from blast furnace grade iron ore. Unlike the electric arc furnace (EAF), the DRI smelting furnace can handle larger slag volumes that emanate from the high gangue in BF grade DRI. Therefore, fluxing plays an important role in operating the DRI smelting furnace. This paper presents fluxing options and proposes slag quality and operating windows for the DRI smelting furnace. Also, the effect of slag on refractory durability will be discussed.

Heavy minerals recovered from recently discovered deposits in the Murray Basin are proving to be somewhat more difficult to process into saleable ilmenite products than ilmenites from existing operations. This is due to the nature of the gangue minerals present, the impurities in the valuable minerals and the size distribution of the mineral assemblages. Ilmenite product quality, in particular, can be adversely affected by any of these factors. Over the past two years the authors have been involved in assessing the potential to manufacture ilmenite products from a variety of mineral sand deposits in the Murray Basin. The steps undertaken to define the potential products and develop suitable flowsheets have evolved in parallel to the exploration efforts, in cooperation with companies undertaking exploration in the Murray Basin. A combination of an understanding of detailed mineralogy, application of magnetic fractionation and modification of magnetic susceptibility of the ilmenites has in all cases, been successful in improving ilmenite product quality. The targeting of particular ilmenites to specific downstream processes for TiO2 pigment manufacture is the most challenging aspect of this development.

The coal basins that formed near the margin of Permian Australia were comparable in size with the Appalachian coalfields and with the European fields between Wales and Poland. They formed on the foreland side of a growing orogen in a system of linked transform basins formed by transtension on strike-slip faults. They were terminated and compressed when the Gympie volcanic arc was accreted to the orogen. Another huge system of Permian coal basins extending far inland from the Permian coast was also terminated when the Gympie Terrane was Accreted.

The backfilling operation at Olympic Dam mine supports a 9.8 Mtpa underground Long Hole Open Stoping (LHOS) operation. It involves a combination of Cemented Aggregate Fill (CAF), surface rockfill and underground rockfill. The fill material is introduced from the surface via boreholes into the top of the stopes. Due to the deleterious effects of the dust and the thickness of the atmosphere in the stope it is not possible to view the filling process either at optical or infrared (IR) wavelengths. The need for a means to measure the filling process is driven by the placement of both rock and CAF fill in the stopes. The large volumes and high relative cost of CAF makes the minimisation of CAF fill a business priority. Incorrect filling can lead to the sterilisation of ore reserve. The use of millimeter wave radar to view through the haze to give real-time data on the relative positions of the different fill masses is being developed as an in-stope fill monitoring device. This paper reviews the salient points of the technology and its potential use in the backfilling operation at Olympic Dam. The broader potential of this technology for use in the mining industry by æseeingÆ through water and dust laden environments such as that found in stopes and ore passes is also discussed.

The dry processing of mineral sands concentrates can result in the generation of significant amounts of airborne dust. The radioactive component of this dust has implications within the context of work environment health codes. The last four years have seen considerable investment in dry plant equipment enclosure and dust extraction systems, with resultant reductions in plant ambient dust levels. Simultaneously, an industry wide program was started to examine the origin, nature, mineralogy and radioactivity of the airborne dust. The major findings of this study have been: ò confirmation that monazite was the only significant source of dust radioactivity. ò recognition of two sources of dust: - agglomerates of finely divided ilmenite-rutile alteration products, which are formed by the removal of surface coatings and particles. - abraded mineral fragments, which reflect the mineralogy of the parent particles.
