A laminar-flow furnace was used to study the combustion of four flotation concentrates (chalcopyrite, pyrite, galena, and sphalerite) in air at temperatures up to 1400¦C. A special- Iv developed two-colour pyrometer was used to measure the temperature of individual chalco- pvrite and pyrite particles as they underwent combustion. Chalcopyrite and pyrite ignited with very high rates of reaction at air tempera- tures above 480 and 600¦C respectively, forming molten products. Galena and sphalerite required temperatures in excess of 700 and 1200¦ respect- ively to attain equivalent rates of reaction. The high rates of reaction for galena and spha- lerite were caused by vaporization. This paper presents an overview of the strategy adopted to bring the Ballymoney opencut lignite deposit to an advanced stage of mine design and confidence. Certain aspects of the project differentiate it from the normal Australian experience. These include the thick overlying glacial drift, the proximity to established infrastructure and the wide fluctua- tions in annual lignite demand. The incorporation of these factors in the mine plan are discussed. The deposit area is located near the town of Ballymoney, in Northern Ireland. In July 1986, after winning an internationally competitive tender, Meekatharra Minerals Ltd commenced an exploration programme designed to delineate reserves to supply a 450 MW power station. In less than eighteen months, a complete evaluation was undertaken and a price submitted in December 1987 to the relevant authorities for the supply of lignite. Subsequently, UK government consultants and significant inter- national banks have endorsed the findings. The mining study commenced with the evaluation of various develop- ment strategies, followed by selection of the most viable mining method and equipment. The equipment selected will mine four million tonnes of lignite and eleven million cubic metres of waste each year. In year 15, the waste removal requirement increases to almost seventeen million cubic metres. This results in an average strip ratio over the mine life of three cubic metres of waste per tonne of lignite. The quality of the product delivered to the run of mine conveyor transfer point, based on maximum resource recovery, will include heat content of 8813 kJ/kg (3789 Btu/Ib), ash content of 28% and moisture content of 40%.

The risers connect the intake and discharge tunnels to the ocean. Construction commenced on both in April 2007. The paper describes the key design criteria for the risers, the construction constraints that influenced the design and the design of the main elements of the risers and the connections to the tunnels.

The Dugald River Zn-Pb-Ag deposit occurs within the complexly deformed and metamorphosed sediments of the Middle Proterozoic Cloncurry Terrane, Eastern Succession, Mount Isa Inlier. The sedimentary sequence comprises a thick package of variably carbonatic argillitic and siliciclastic sediments of the Corella Formation, Lady Clayre Dolomite and Knapdale Quartzite. A slate and calc-argillite unit locally referred to as the Dugald River Slates is the host to the economically significant deposit. The deformational history of the Dugald River area involved three phases of ductile deformation. The present geometry of the Dugald River Main Lode is recognised as a strike extensive steep westerly dipping tabular sheet, within which a steep north westerly plunging zone of pronounced thickening is evident. This zone is interpreted to have formed during folding via remobilisation of the sulphides into a shoot-like body, the geometry of which was controlled by stretching associated with the folding. Further modification of the shoot and sulphide re-distribution has resulted from late phase transgressive shears. The sulphide mineralisation is characterised by three distinctive sulphide types, laminated, banded and breccia, the distribution of which define two broad zones. The northern zone is a narrow I - 5 m thick stratabound unit comprising finely laminated and banded sulphide mineralisation within a well bedded fine grained argillite sequence. This is part of the Lady Clayre Dolomite sequence and is a predeformational precursor form of mineralisation. The southern zone comprises the thickest development of mineralisation (up to 30 m) characterised by slate-sulphide breccias and veins derived from complex polyphase remobilisation of the sulphide mineralisation. It is this zone which forms a stratabound locally transgressive body within the high strain Dugald River Slates and which contains the main body of economic mineralisation. Sulphide mineralogy comprises sphalerite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, galena and traces of chalcopyrite, pyrargyrite, tetrahedrite, marcasite and arsenopyrite. The present resource for the Dugald River deposit stands at 38 Mt grading 13.0 per cent Zn, 2.1 per cent Pb and 42 g/t AS. The Dugald River Zn-Pb-Ag deposit is regarded as an example of a syndiagenetic stratabound sulphide accumulation which, as the result of polyphase deformation and upper greenschist to middle amphibolite facies metamorphism, has undergone extensive remobilisation and Rccrystallisation.

The throughput of a HP-roller mill is determined by the acceleration of the feed material within acceleration zone and introduction into the compression zone. Both processes depend on the internal friction and the friction of the material on the roller surface which is influenced by the surface structure and adhering of material. The particle motion in the acceleration zone has been investigated with high speed videos showing the effect of the centrifugal force and the slip on the roller surface. The throughput is discussed in the term of the specific throughput which can be approximated by a linear function characterised by the throughput number and the throughput elasticity. The throughput number is a helpful measure for investigating the influence of the feed material and the surface structure. The experimental results give some guidance for chosing an optimum corrugation profile.

Japanese pig iron production in 1973 registered about 90 million tons. As clearly seen from the productivity (2.04 t/m3/D), and fuel ratio (494 kg/t-pig), the Japanese steel industry has maintained quite high levels of efficiency in blast-furnace (BF) operations. Among the many factors which have contributed toward these high levels of efficiency, the use of high quality coke is very important. The Japanese steel industry imports about 85% of its metallurgical coals from various countries of the world, including Australia. The effective use of these metallurgical coals of various origins in accordance with their re- spective properties is most essential for maintaining coke quality. This paper describes coking properties of various metallurgical coals and blending techniques based on these coking properties, in relation to the specifications of coke quality required for efficient BF operations. This paper also describes briefly new technology for expanding the scope of the use of coking coals.

The paper reviews some of the aerodynamic factors in the blast furnace process and outlines the areas requiring further study. Detailed discussion is given to the pressure drop in both the dry and the wet zone of the furnace and an optimum coke size is suggested for minimum pressure drop. The effect of various charging sequences on the distribution of the gas in the furnace shaft is treated and notes on stack injection included. Flow phenomena limiting blast furnace output and the influence of aerodynamics on the movement of the bed in the furnace are outlined and these include fluidisation, flooding and raceway formation. A mention is made of alkalis, sulphur, zinc, softening, and oil injection and the mixed effect in blast furnace economics of increased tuyere velocity as problems requiring further research.

Copper concentrate from Bougainville's copper mine located on the west slope of the Crown Prince Range on Bougainville island, is pumped 27 km to the filter and drying plant at Anewa Bay for preparation and storage prior to shipment to overseas customers. Prior to shipment the thickened concentrate slurry is passed through a test loop to check that its consistency and pH are acceptable for transportation through the main pipe line. The exposed high face of Kerr's Quarry has dominated the township of Ferntree Gully for half a century. The near perpendicular face of bare dacite rock is a crumbling scar in an area of significant natural beauty. Apart from being unsightly, the face is a hazard for any person who approaches too close to its base or to the top edge. The height and the precipitous nature of this man made wall of rock is hazardous indeed. (fig. 1) The rock face is on the municipal boundary between the Shire of Sherbrooke and the City of Knox. This boundary was drawn when partition of the Shire of Ferntree Gully took place. There are many advantages in benching back the wall of the quarry but to do so the operation, located in Knox would need to extend into Sherbrooke. There are planning difficulties involved in such a manoeuvre, but during 1972, at a meeting of Cabinet Ministers, it was agreed that the matter be resolved.

To finalise the arrangement and details of the headframe to be erected over the new No. 3 Shaft, the haulage and winding equipment requirements were first determined, then tentative designs were prepared to cover the needs of general shaft servicing work for men and materials, mullock and ore handling, and the probable requirements of a breaker station to be built adjacent to the headframe, which would provide for the crushing of the run-of-mine ore down to a size which would be suitable for feeding on to the concentrating mill.

Research activities to classify the quality of iron oxides have a long history but most of such activities are for the existing processes such as blast furnace or DR plant. Therefore the newly developed process, such as the COREX process, needs new standardisation although some basic functions of the new process have similarity to the existing processes. Many researchers (Hauk, 1990; Cho et al, 1998) in the field of COREX process have conducted investigations since the early stages of the process development and activities are underway for further plant optimisation. As Agrawal and Oshnock (1995) pointed out, because coke is not included in the COREX reduction shaft the strength requirement of the feed materials in COREX process will be more demanding than that in the blast furnace. This condition is similar to Midrex DR plant but the main reduction gas of COREX plant is carbon monoxide generated from coal combustion while that of Midrex DR plant is hydrogen from natural gas.

In 1997, the Company expects to spend US$30 million on exploration in the Yandal greenstone belt.

Mechanised sub-level stoping is one of the most widely accepted stoping practices followed in base metal mines in India. As a general practice, blast-scheduling of rings in these stopes is done either heuristically or randomly which leads to a high fluctuation in ore grade when drawn and delivered to the mill. In this paper, dynamic programming has been investigated as an optimisation technique for optimal blast-scheduling of rings. A microcomputer based dynamic programming algorithm has been developed in C language which runs under the UNIX environment. A case study based on Indian mine data is presented to demonstrate the application of the dynamic programming concept and use of the developed software. It is concluded that dynamic programming can be used as a production planning tool in Indian mines practicing sub-level stoping and following heuristic/random approaches for blast-scheduling of rings.

The gas drainage characteristics of two seams, the Bowen at Bowen No. 2 Colliery, Collinsville, and the Gemini at Leichhardt Colliery, Blackwater, are assessed. Single borehole tests and drainage panels were studied by underground monitoring of pressures and gas flows. Permeability was found to be effected by cleat to an order of magnitude. Other structural features are shown to be important. In this context, the need for delineation of no-flow zone locations in boreholes is shown to be of great importance where in-seam pre-drainage is being used for outburst control. Water in the seams strongly influences permeability causing gas flows to fluctuate with time. Use is made of modified reservoir engineering techniques to analyse the drainage characteristics of seams.

At 11 p.m. on Tuesday, 24th July 1979, an explosion of methane gas in a three heading development panel at Appin Colliery resulted in the deaths of fourteen men. The explosion followed after or was asso- ciated with a changeover of the ventilation to achieve a central intake between two returns. Investigation by Inspectors was followed by separate Judicial and Coronial Inquiries. Investigational information aimed at understanding the circumstances of the ex- plosion was prepared for the Inquiries. Recommendations following the Judicial Inquiry have been adopted by the Department of Mineral Resources.

The potential of the developed multi-dimensional analysis system to assist interpretation from large data sets through derived digital mapping models is presented accompanied by preliminary results. The concept learning model is original and its application general. Applications exist in general science, engineering, earth resource management and economics. The developed system incorporates advances in machine learning, neural networks, object-oriented software engineering, knowledge representation and fuzzy logic. ' The specific application presented involves automatic earth resource modelling and assessment involving geological theories of mineral potential. The developed system functions as a new and powerful mineral exploration tool, To date the model has been trialled on an earth resource database and several published data sets. A more general potential application is knowledge discovery within databases. The specific theory that is tested in the experimental results is the nature of the cause-effect relationship between the hypothesised geological causes and the measured effects within a previously published test survey. Also integrated here are a neurophysiological cerebellar model of human learning, a new concept similarity measure for pattern recognition, modelled components to explain human concept formation through knowledge discovery and a means of permanent representation.The implementation is as a new artificial neural network architecture functioning as a hybrid expert system. Understanding of programmed concept learning is extended through the model. Also established is a basis for a new approach to multivariate data analysis. Spatial analysis for decision support is integrated over many dimensions, relationships, data types and data modes. Application of the developed methodology and system adds value to data bases. Discovered knowledge is represented as new generalisations, interpolations, classification hierarchies, aggregations and associations within a dynamic, maintainable and reusable integrated knowledge framework. New digital knowledge products and intelligent access follow. Permanently stored, maintainable, easily accessible and discovered knowledge improves decisions through extended hypothesis testing, spatial data analysis and inferencing, prediction, logical deductions and explanations.

To assist in the evaluation of different haulage systems, a truck haulage simulation model has been developed at BHP Melbourne Research Laboratories. Stratigraphic correlations across the Mur- phy Tectonic Ridge are crucial to regional corr. elations between the Mount Isa and McArthur River areas. Recent work in the Westmoreland and surrounding areas has substantiated the earlier general correlations between the Mount Isa and McArthur River sequences. The Mount Isa and McArthur Groups, and their equivalents, remain prime prospecting targets for major lead-zinc deposits of the Mount Isa and R.Y.C. type. A prospective area for Redbank-type copper mineralization is suggested.
