The present situation in the field of iron ore pelletizing is briefly described with particular view of the Lurgi/Dravo travelling grate process. To meet todays pellet quality requirements with regard to physical and metal- lurgical properties it is often necessary to add basic fluxing materials. It has been de- monstrated that for certain ores, basic addi- tives provide a considerable improvement in fired pellet quality. The production of self- fluxing pellets is becoming increasingly attractive. One Lurgi/Dravo plant is now in operation and another is under construction which were designed for the production of self- fluxing pellets. Self-fluxing pellets may be considered as the primary or exclusive blast furnace burden and the installation of a sinter plant is not necessary if the pellet plant-can handle all in-plant fines. Reference is made to the first pellet plant utilizing iron ore concentrate, in-plant fines and basic flux. The use of solid fuel for pellet indura- tion is discussed because of the increasing prices and possible shortages of heavy oil and natural gas. Since there is a strong tendency to increasing plant capacities, the design fea- tures of travelling grate pelletizing plants for productions up to 6 million tonnes are Discussed.

A synergistic solvent extraction (SX) system for nickel and cobalt recovery using Versatic 10 and decyl-4-pyridinecarboxylate was tested with BHP Billiton pilot plant leach solution. Another synergistic SX system for cobalt and zinc recovery was successfully tested using Baja MiningÆs pilot plant leach solutions. Synergistic SX systems have also been developed to separate iron, zinc and copper from nickel and cobalt for Minara Resources and to separate manganese from magnesium and calcium in waste stream for HiTec Energy. The gypsum precipitation problem at the former Bulong operation could have been alleviated using a Versatic 10 and CLX50 synergistic SX system. These synergistic systems have shown high selectivity for target metals over impurity metals and would largely improve SX plant operation. Maintaining a æhealthyÆ organic is very important for efficient plant operation. Careful analysis of plant organic at CSIRO has been used as a tool to pre-empt and/or solve problems in operating circuits. Work performed to assist operators has included assessing plant organic solutions to highlight impurity build-up with time, assessing reagent stability under prescribed operating conditions, correlating organic composition with impurity transfer and crud analysis. An independent estimate has determined that work in this area by CSIRO has provided over $50 M in benefits to the industry.

Location & Permit Status Three major Mesozoic Tertiary basins exist along the continental shelf area of southeastern Australia, known as the Bass Strait area. They are the Gippsland (east of the longitude of Melbourne) Otway (west of Melbourne) and the Bass (underlying central Bass Strait between Victoria and Tasmania). The total area, both onshore and offshore, is approximately 100,000 square miles. In March 1960, the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd. acquired exploration title to the continental shelf areas of the Gippsland, Bass and Otway basins from the States of Victoria and Tasmania. The title to that part of the Otway Basin in South Australian waters was granted in July, 1961. Other exploration permits, being 8 miles wide in Gippsland, held by Woodside :E.) Oil Co. N.L., and 15 miles wide along the southwest coast of Victoria, held by Mobil-BP-Interstate Oil (Frome-Broken Hill Co. Pty. Ltd.), were in existence prior to granting the B.H.P. title. Subsequently, Shell, B.H.P., Esso and Magellan have been granted title to the remaining areas of the continental shelf in the basins under discussion. In three separate agreeme negotiated between 1964 and-1966, Esso obtained farm-in rights to B.H.P.'s Gippsland, Bass and Ott' Permits.

Highly weathered ground, limited collar options and the need to achieve a desired outcome at the lowest possible cost led to the need to adopt a construction approach that had no established design methodology. The newest ventilation shaft at Mandalay Resources’ Costerfield Operations had to be established to a depth of 30 m through poor ground best described as ‘sticky swelling clay’, some of which was contained within an old backfilled pit.The ability to excavate a traditional presink was not possible due to limited space and the introduction of men into the shaft was to be avoided due to the associated safety risks and corresponding increase in cost. Piling in conjunction with raise boring and remote fibrecrete application was identified as a possible solution that could achieve the desired outcome at an acceptable level of risk.Construction of the piles was challenging and required continual refinement until an acceptable level of productivity could be achieved. Limitations on concrete delivery was taken into consideration to ensure hole stand-up time was acceptable and re-drills were not required. The adoption of a set process from alignment, drilling, concrete placement and testing ensured the desired design was achieved. Mine operators should consider the use of piling as a method of shaft stabilisation for the portion of raise bored shaft that passes through the weathered zone.The importance of quality control and attention to detail through the entire shaft construction process cannot be underestimated as issues such as insufficient geotechnical investigation, pile and pilot hole deviation, concrete and fibrecrete quality, as well as delays in the application of fibrecrete can place the success of the project at risk.This paper outlines key learnings from a client’s perspective with regards to the concept, planning, design, execution and completion of a 3.1 m diameter raise bore shaft through both weathered and highly structured ground at the Augusta Mine.CITATION:Green, S and Austerberry, R, 2014. Over the 20 years to 1990 the Australian mining industry, presently worth some $A60 billion, generated a negative real rate of return (McDonald, 1992); not surprisingly under-performing the returns from bonds and industrial equities. Over this same period more than $A70 billion was invested in expanding the Australian mineral industry.

Data from ball mills of a wide range of sizes are analysed using detailed mathematical models and non-linear least squares fitting techniques. This analysis reveals that the relative power inefficiency of large ball mills is due to inefficient grinding of coarse (plus 4 mm) particles in these mills. A qualitative physical hypothesis is proposed to explain this behaviour. The results of the analysis can be used to scale up ball mill behaviour, using the mathematical models and techniques developed. A simpler ball mill scale-up procedure is also proposed, and its limitations stated. Laboratory experiments are being conducted to determine the average size distributions of single particles of different ores after breaKage. These experiments can distinguish between the different ores, and it is hoped to use their results to model and predict the grinding of different ores in ball Mills.

The Diavik Diamond Mine is a world-class operation located in an extreme environment 220 km south of the Arctic Circle in CanadaÆs Northwest Territories. The mine has a number of distinctive characteristics û such as limited winter access via an ice road, mine infrastructure being located on an island, with mining taking place behind dykes holding back a lake, temperatures at the mine that get down to -45¦C in winter, and the presence of bears, wolves, foxes and wolverines! One thing that Diavik does have in common with other mines around the world is the need for reconciliation. In late 2005 Diavik implemented SnowdenÆs Reconcilor software system to facilitate the process of reconciling geological models, mine plans, production data and plant results. This paper provides a case study of the reconciliation system implementation. It outlines the migration of Diavik away from a comprehensive and effective spreadsheet-based reconciliation process to a commercial grade, automated and web-based information management system. This paper documents the reasons for moving away from the spreadsheet system, the key parameters used for reconciliation, and the benefits gained by closing the loop between reconciliation and ongoing process improvement.

This paper carries on from an earlier paper 'Cemented fill practice and research at Mount Isa' and reports further on the laboratory programme at Mount Isa to develop a cheap cem- ented fill using Company waste products. The practical economic significance of availability of cheap cementing agents is re- viewed, with the various alternative approaches available The basic approach adopted within this paper is that use of reactive pozzolans such as ground slags to replace a proportion of the Portland cement in the fill can make mining methods employing cemented fill more economic- ally competitive with other mining methods.

For the development of BHP's Gregory open cut coal mine in Central Queensland a mini computer was successfully used to assist staff in the evaluation of the deposit and the planning of the mine. The Gregory deposit is essentially a single mineable seam deposit, however the systems developed may be applied to other coal deposits including multi seam occurences. The first phase of the Gregory computer evaluation and planning project involved the establishment of a borehole data base for the storage, retrieval and analysis of both strata and quality data. During the second phase a numeric block model of the coal deposit was created. Using this model reserve calculations were carried out by specifying the area with the aid of a digitizing tablet. The third phase involved the develop- ment of systems to simulate the dragline stripping operations including the rehandle percentage calculation, a dragline production schedule showing coal quantity and quality exposed, and a combined multi dragline operation schedule that can produce figures and graphs for up to 20 variables. The discovery of copper and nickel sulphides in the Riwaka Complex in 1967 led to considerable exploration activity by a number of companies. Various exploration techniques used by these companies are summarised and discussed. Activity of these companies shows that mineralisation is mainly confined to the southern, ultramafic section of the Riwaka Complex where geological mapping recognised sixteen units within, or associated with the Riwaka Complex. Significant pyrrhotite, pentlandite chalcopyrite mineralisation is restricted to biotite feldspar pyroxenites and to clinopyroxenite units. Lesser and more erratically distributed pyrite chalcopyrite pyrrhotite mineralisation occurs in poikilitic pyroxene hornblendites, melanocratic gabbros, and in marginal diorite lenses. It is suggested that a linear belt of layered ultramafic and mafic rocks described in Fiordland by Williams (1974) may be a southern extension of the Riwaka Complex. The Riwaka Complex has been classified as belonging to the Picritic subtype, (Tholeiitic suite), of Naldrett and Cabri, (1976), and as such it is concluded that it exhibits substantial potential for the discovery of economic copper and nickel deposits. It is considered that the complex is a multiphase differentiated intrusion emplaced in a major tensional fracture zone that developed in a relatively stable tectonic environment, namely a succession of middle Paleozoic shallow water shelf sediments. Based on sparse available evidence it is suggested that the Riwaka Complex was intruded in the lower to middle Permian. It is further suggested that the tensional fracturing was initiated by the onset of subduction process which were responsible for the development of the Permian volcanic arcs and ophiolite belt in the north west Nelson area.

The Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) employs the technologies of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The use of backscattered electron images to define phase boundaries produces very high resolution image analysis and subsequently detailed and accurate particle images and data output. The mineralogy, elemental deportment, grain size, liberation characteristics and mineral associations of a large number of samples can be described. The MLA uses a comprehensive set of analysis methods to meet a wide range of applications. The data from ore characteristion projects completed during feasibility studies are important aids for effective plant design. The MLA can be used to establish variation in the mineralogy of an orebody, identify and quantify the deportment of deleterious elements, and provide valuable information to support comminution and flotation test work. In established plants the MLA data is an important component of plant survey work and monthly composite samples. Changes in feed characteristics and/or operating conditions can be monitored and solutions to any deterioration in recovery and grade performance found. The MLA has extensive applications in the minerals industry. Rare and precious metal samples can be accurately measured using high-resolution grey-scale images. Several new measurement techniques have been developed to perform rapid searches of a large number of samples to provide efficient and accurate analyses of fine-grain, low concentrate material. Quantifying the mineral variability in mineral sands operations is essential to maximising grades and recovery. The MLA produces particle-based data on density, mineralogy, size and shape and has developed measurement techniques to provide the elemental quantification required for the characterisation of these deposits. Nickel sulfide ores can be analysed to provide modal mineralogy, elemental deportment and liberation and locking data. The low-grade and variable nickel mineralogy of these deposits makes the use of quantitative mineralogy an essential component of maximising returns. Coarse particle measurements preserve the in situ textures of ores and support flotation and breakage test work for feasibility studies. The deportment of penalty and bonus elements can be quantified and the association and grain-size data can be used to identify potential separation issues.

A review of the literature indicated that several studies have been reported on the dissolution of gold using iodide/iodine, bromide/bromine leaching systems. Although the reagent costs are much cheaper for chloride/chlorine (or hypochlorite) this system has not been fully evaluated. This study was conducted to evaluate the fundamental chemistry of the chloride/hypochlorite leaching system. The CHEMIX program was used to model the stability of various gold species existing in the solution. The gold dissolution rate at different conditions was determined using gold strips immersed in various mixtures of chloride/hypochlorite. Leaching experiments were conducted to test the extraction of gold from various ores (oxidised and copper-gold ores), showing a promising prospect for this technique in various applications.

A small glass walled pot grate has been used to simulate drying of iron ore pellets in a travelling grate plant. This equipment has enabled the effect of decreasing grind and de- creasing pellet bulk density on plant production to be quantitatively predicted. These predic- tions are compared with plant experience. The use of the laboratory simulator in comparing the effect of various additives on plant production is also described and substantial improvements in both the goethite and free-water drying periods are predicted.

Access to geoscience reference informa- tion including mining and mineral processing has increased considerably in the last five years in Australia. This has been due principally to the use of computer-based information storage and retrieval systems. The main reference data base for the mineral and petroleum industries and disciplines in Australia is the Australian Earth Sciences Information System (AESIS), cooperatively developed and coordinated by the Australian Mineral Foundation (AMF). AESIS is created on the CSIRO computing network (CSIRONET) which has a CYBER 76 host computer located at the CSIRO Division of Computing Research (DCR) at Canberra. Data entry was until recently carried out by AMF using a dedicated line through the Adelaide CSIRONET node to the CYBER 76 interactive system. Data entry is now done directly at the AMF on a DEC PDP 11/44 mini computer that is also a host work station on CSIRONET. Data collection via magnetic tape media input from other computer-based systems is under development. The software used for data entry and management of the data base was developed by CSIRO CILES Systems Development Group. For public interactive online use the AESIS data base is transferred by tape to AUSINET - the Australian information net- work run by ACI Computer Services, Melbourne, where the data base is converted to a form suitable for the IBM STAIRS software. CSIRO facilities at DCR Canberra are used to produce computer type-set camera ready products and output in microform, on magnetic tape or as graphic display. Three separate and unconfined aquifers occur in the Hilton area, named relative to position in relation to ore horizons: Footwall Aquifer in the east; Ore-Zone Aquifer within the ore-bearing Urquhart Shales; and the Hangingwall Aquifer in the west.It is the on-going strategy it Hilton to drain the Ore-Zone Aquifer which occupies structurally- and sulphide-controlled leached zones in the steeply west dipping strata. The aquifer affects considerable ore reserves to 480 m below the surface. Dewatering began in 1976, and is essentially completed to 4 level (240 m below surface). Dewatering efforts are now based on 8 level (480 m below surface).

Since early 1968 the Bureau of Mineral Resources (B.M.R.) has carried out VLF-EM test surveys in various parts of Australia and Papua. The aim of the work, primarily, was to examine the effect- iveness of the method as an exploration tool under a variety of Australian conditions. Selection of test areas was determined by the availability of geological, geophysical and drilling information and by the desirability to include a variety of physical variables such as depth of weathering and topography. The aim of the present account is to review the results of this work and to make an assessment of the method available to the mining industry. The author wishes to acknowledge considerable assistance both by way of data and discussion provided by Messrs. SITUATED in the county of Manchcster, in Northern Eyre's Peninsula, the Iron Knob ore-deposits form the basis of the industry. These deposits are connected by the Iron Knob tramway to the port of Whyalla, aal miles distant, on the western shore of Speneer Gulf,and to-day another tramway is under construction to link up with the same port, a second group of iron ore leases known as Iron Baron, which is situated 18 miles south of Iron Knob. Fig. 1 indicates the geographical relationship of these three places, Iron Knob, Iron Baron, and Whyalla, which together comprise this field of the company's activities.

Examples from Peak Downs Mine are used as a guide to the range of methods available.A number of geological and geotechnical conditions adverse to successful in-pit bench stripping are described. In all cases bench, floor, and/or final lowwall instability can develop and compromise the economics of extraction.

Mechanical models are established in accordance with the degree of mining on both sides of the coal pillar, and formulae were derived which calculated the superposition stress distribution and the width of the plastic region. The stability of the coal pillar was analysed and a reasonable size of coal pillar determined, in accordance with the elastic region rate. Further practical examples for the stability of the coal pillar are calculated and simulated.
