Jameson cell pilot plant trials were conducted in a number of areas in the Red Dome gold/copper flotation plant during 1991. The aim of testwork was to reduce the amount of cyanide soluble copper reporting in tailing to the gold leach plant, and hence reduce cyanide consumption. A number of these tests were conducted in parallel with conventional flotation columns. Laboratory tests were conducted to simulate the performance of the existing plant when compared with the addition of the Jameson cell allowing an extra sulphidising phase. This paper reviews the comparison of the Jameson cell and conventional columns in recovering cyanide soluble copper, while maximising copper concentrate grade. Key parameters that are investigated are residence times, air/pulp ratios, superficial gas recoveries and size by size recoveries. A brief comparison of performance of the Jameson cell and column in the controlled potential sulphidisation process is also presented. An estimation of the reduction in cyanide consumption is given.

The experience gained in the development of an Operator Guidance System (OGS) for on-line process control and fault diagnosis in a commercial scale sintering process will be discussed in this paper. The OGS development started with the specification of feasible control and support tasks, eg ratio control scheme, mass balance calculations. Next, minimum requirements for fault diagnosis and process control were defined and the adequacy of existing instrumentation was assessed. The OGS knowledge base consists of both quantitative and qualitative diagnosis methods. Quantitative models based on fundamental engineering principle are used first and any gaps in such quantitative knowledge are then filled with heuristic rules. The diagnostic rules for the knowledge base was developed based on the knowledge acquired from experienced operators and operations engineers and validated with plant data. A real time reasoning program was written using C language and data base software. The OGS has a human-computer interface which is the primary means of interaction between the OGS and process operator. The OGS development has been successful in assisting operators in decision-making in their routine tasks. Further enhancement to the existing system is currently underway.

The ERA - Ranger Mine ore processing operation consists of a sulphuric acid leach followed by counter current decantation and solvent extraction circuits. The most expensive unit processing operation at Ranger is the sulphuric acid leach. In 1992 and 1993 changes were made to the operation of the leach circuit. These changes have reduced power and reagent consumption in leach by 30 per cent and 20 per cent respectively with minimal effect on extraction efficiency. The first change was to operate the leach circuits at higher pHs than previously attempted. In addition a cap was placed on the amount of acid added to the leach circuit. Secondly, an on-line pH measurement system was installed and has reduced the variation with time of the leach circuit pHs. Finally, the number of leach vessels used was reduced from ten to seven. This action was undertaken after an examination of the uranium profile and the residence time in the leach circuit from previous years. This paper examines the above changes and assesses their effectiveness on plant performance and costs.

In 1976, The Zinc Corporation Limited Broken Hill set up a plant to re-process a hill of tailing (Mt. Keast) from the original treatment operations. With the likely disappearance of this source of feed in 1985, an investigation was initiated to determine what other feed sources might be available. This involved searching through old records and photographs as well as a subsequent drilling campaign. The paper briefly covers the history of treatment operations and describes, as a result of the information obtained, the likely future sources of feed.

BHP Steel International's Newcastle blast. furnaces have operated since their caimissioning on cake based on local low rank coals. In the early 1960's Newcastle coke was believed to be the weakest in the world. Newcastle coke now supports a blast furnace operation with a productivity of 2.1 t/d.rn IV, a fuel rate of 490 kg/t and a coke rate of 415 kg/t. This coke is nuudv from blonds of lcxni and southern Sydney basin coals with blend Ro nex in the range 0.94 - 1.01. Blast furnace performance in periods of differing coal blends is conjured. The Engel Model search simulator is described with particular emphasis on preparation of input parameters. The computer has a "black box" role in the same way a telephone or radio is a "black box" in communications. A search technique (sensor) is selected and applied in two stages of'search, namely, reconnaissance and detailed. The model relies on knowing and quantifying the parameters of the target sought and the search technique; this is usually done by analogy studies from available literature and experience. The parameters are then balanced by feasibility studies on the search area. Case histories show that the study makes the user aware of what he is likely to find rather than what he wants or needs to find to be viable. Two case histories are presented: one for Mississippi Valley type lead- zinc deposits and another for stratiform copper. The first study showed particular benefits in the input stage and highlighted the fact that one could expect a lot of encouragement by way of interesting results but with little chance of finding the high-grade,

Since 2005 BHP Billiton Iron Ore has been working with the consulting company Runge to implement the software XPAC Advanced Destination Scheduler (ADS) in life-of-mine studies. The Mt Whaleback mine, being the single biggest open cut iron ore mine in the world, presents some special challenges in scheduling. The biggest challenge has been the slow run time and difficulty in targeting all ore and waste requirements. The high waste to ore strip ratio means that much of the cost of mining is tied up in waste dumping. It is therefore very important to schedule waste efficiently. At Mt Whaleback there is an additional challenge of managing two types of waste: inert and environmentally sensitive pyritic material. This paper shows how the XPAC destination scheduler is configured to achieve efficient and repeatable waste scheduling results at the Mt Whaleback mine. It also discusses proposed improvements to the process. The overall ore and waste schedule is configured to target mining parameters, crusher feed and grades. The schedule is run in two stages. The first stage is ore mining. The waste that needs to be mined is locked in a sequence. The second stage is the waste scheduling. The waste destination scheduler uses three inputs: source waste parcels locked in a sequence, a haul road and a waste dump block model. The process involves setting some rules for dump progression and haul path selection. These can be validated. The schedule is then run to target the shortest travel time. The results of scheduling are graphical and numeric and can be transferred into many different formats for reporting. The graphical result shows face positions in time that can be used for detailed dump design. The numeric results are used to estimate truck fleet size, fuel consumption, labour and equipment financials. The process has been successful in reducing the project time line, increasing the ability to do more scenarios and increasing schedule accuracy, transferability and repeatability.

The Early Proterozoic metamorphic rocks of the Broken Hill (BH) Block have been recently subdivided into sixteen formations and four groups (Willis et al., 1983b, Stevens et al., 1983). This stratigraphic subdivision has relied upon recognition of distinctive mapped rock units and "associations" of mapped rock units, which characterize particular lithostratigraphic units. The rock units and rock unit associations define local ordered sequences which can be compared and correlated, thereby establishing the stratigraphic succession. In the Clevedale homestead, Thackaringa, BH City, Bores Mine-Freyers mine, Silver King mine, and Brewery Well areas, coherent stratigraphic successions have been interpreted. These areas illustrate the regional variability of the stratigraphic succession and facies changes within individual stratigraphic units. Stratigraphic type sections are located in the Thackaringa, Bores Mine-Freyers mine, Silver King mine, and Brewery Well areas. The principles of stratigraphic interpretation applied in the BH Block can be used in other areas of Willyama Supergroup outcrop such as the Euriowie, Olary and Mount Painter Blocks. The general technique may also have applicability to other highly deformed and metamorphosed terrains.

There has been disappointingly little development in the understanding of the behaviour of rock slopes in open pit mines over the past 30 years. The lack of development in general, and of robust, standardised approaches in particular, are surprising in view of the æultraÆ deep open pit mines that are being developed to depths in excess of 1000 m. Research has recently been carried out into the occurrence of zones of extension strain in open pit slopes. This showed that very large zones of extension strain can occur, and this finding represents a significant new aspect in slope stability that has not been considered before. The greatest magnitudes of extension strain occur near the toe of the slope, either in the slope itself, or in the floor of the pit. Results of the research will be presented for different slope heights, slope angles and horizontal to vertical in situ stress ratios. The magnitudes of the strains are considered to be large enough to result in fracturing of intact rock, and the fracture orientations predicted are adverse for slope stability. Fracturing that is extension in nature is common in competent, brittle rocks and often develops with some violence and little or no warning, producing easily measurable seismicity. In the slope situation, the expected physical manifestation of this behaviour would be popping off of rock slabs and plates of rock from slope surfaces and popping up of the pit floor, as well as the formation of new fractures within the rock mass. Such behaviour may cause overall slope failure, or may initiate failure, which may then be driven to overall slope failure by other influencing factors or combinations of factors. In addition to instability resulting from the fracture surfaces themselves, all induced fracture surfaces could interact with natural geological structures to facilitate formation of a significant failure surface. Case studies of slope failure in two open pits will be described. In both cases failure occurred æsuddenlyÆ after very limited amounts of deformation. In the first, the slope crest moved suddenly upwards and backwards over a length of more than 200 m, with associated instability. In the second, the horizontal displacement of the slope face was almost an order of magnitude greater than the vertical displacement and occurred æsuddenlyÆ. A recently installed seismic system is detecting events in a significant zone behind the slope face. Both pits were in the 200 m to 300 m depth range at the time of the occurrences.

During 1991 - 1993 the author interviewed approximately thirty senior managers of varying responsibilities in either the engineering, construction or operation of a heavy industrial facility. The purpose of the exercise was to determine the factors driving a deterioration of the working relationship between the engineering and the operating company following practical completion of a major project. From the research a number of conclusions have been drawn as to the root cause of the deteriorating relationship. For this paper we are drawing on this initial research and our ongoing experience of solving problems of this nature to present some fundamentals that can be used to break the breakdown maintenance cycle.

Mineralisation adjacent to Herberton occurs within three main subcentres. The Her- berton Hill subcentre is characterised by the association of Sn,W the Herberton Dividing Range South subcentre by Sn, and the Herberton Dividing Range North by Cu, As. The relation- ships between the subcentres are discussed in terms of metal distribution, production, deposit types, wall rock alteration and re- lationships with granitoid intrusives. The temporal and three dimensional spatial re- lationships between the centres are uncertain.

When ore is being selected from a regularised block model, a common procedure is to accept as ore any block whose iron content exceeds a cut-off value, and whose content in each contaminant analyte is below an appropriate cut-off value. This method defines a quadrant within the multidimensional analyte space, such that any block lying within the quadrant is accepted as ore and any block lying outside the quadrant is rejected as waste. The cut-off levels can be adjusted to maximise ore tonnage at a target grade (or analyte vector). When the method is applied to a project comprising multiple pits with systematically differing grades, it is found that ore tonnage at target grade is maximised if different cut-off quadrants are used for the different pits. This is apparently illogical, because it implies that an ore block from one pit may be accepted as ore, but an identical block from another pit is rejected as waste, even when ore from both pits is to be blended into the same product and there are no production cost differences between the pits. The paradox is an example of the ætheory of the second bestÆ: if there are multiple conditions for optimality and one condition is broken, then obeying the other conditions may not be the best policy. The problem lies with the quadrant cut-off method, which is shown to be inconsistent even for selecting ore from a single pit. A criterion that is inconsistent cannot be optimal. It is shown that a linear composite cut-off function provides maximum ore tonnage, and that a single composite cut-off criterion is consistent and optimal over multiple pits. Further, it is shown that a composite cut-off function not only maximises ore tonnage at a specified composition, but also can be used to select ore so as to maximise project value, if marginal costs and values are available.CITATION:Everett, J E, 2013. Ore deposit models form the basis for numerous other economic decisions in the mining process. The success of these economic decisions therefore depend directly on the accuracy of the ore evaluation process. The Geology Department at the Sishen Iron Ore Mine is responsible for the generation of a reliable geological computer model of the rock material with predicted grades. This information is then utilised for further ore reserve calculations, mine planning, production scheduling and grade control. Owing to a very complex geological orebody, grades and beneficiation characteristics differ significantly from sample to sample. This means that ore evaluation is a difficult process and great reliance is placed on computer techniques. In 1993, preparation for the ISO 9002 quality certification of the mine motivated the Geology Department to hold formal `problem solving' sessions in order to identify and revise problem areas in operating

The need to improve existing metallurgical processes and to develop new processes to meet the economic challenges that lie ahead requires the application of the tools of process analysis viz. mathematical models, physical models, pilot plants, laboratory measurements and plant tests. Examples of the application of these techniques to processes are described in this paper. Several of these techniques, combined with basic knowledge, are necessary to make improvements and for existing processes this always involves plant measurements. Also because metallurgical processes include extraction, refining, alloying, casting, mechanical working and heat treatment, an interdisciplinary approach to research and development is essential. This paper argues that metallurgical engineering is a discipline that is uniquely able to encompass the broad spectrum of chemical- and physical-metallurgy processes and is therefore essential to the health of the metallurgical industry.Regrettably many metallurgical engineering departments are not offering courses on process analysis, control, optimization, etc so necessary to meet modern industrial challenges.

This paper discusses the considerations for optimum maintenance of critical ore handling infrastructure in order to minimise the cost to the business of maintenance periods. As maintenance periods are a direct interruption to production, time is of the essence and careful management of shutdown periods is essential. The ore pass systems currently in use at Xstrata Copper û Mount Isa Copper Operations are up to 30 years old and have had significant wear over the years. The maintenance of these passes and their brows and chutes in a production situation is a challenge as it can potentially expose personnel to high risk situations in addition to the production interruptions. Some alternatives for mitigating the risk of working in ore passes including plugging and ballooning are described. Criteria are included for selecting a method for the safe entry into a given ore pass. Experience in adapting the method of ore pass plugs and some lessons learnt in the process are also discussed.

Indosinian (T) orogeny amalgamated the Mongolia-Xingan fold zone, the North China continent, the Yangtzi platform and the SE China fold zone into a unified continent. The early to middle Yanshanian (J-K,) orogeny created a Cordilleran type active continental margin in East Asia, reactivated the consolidated East China continent, and generated a large amount of granitoids, calc-alkaline volcanics and W, Sn, Mo, Cu, Au, and U ore deposits. The late Yanshanian (K2) orogeny began a transition to the western Pacific type continental margin. A tensional environment led to the development of peralkaline magmatism and the formation of continental basins with red beds. The Himalayan (Tr-Q) orogeny was characterised by a backarc spreading and rifting regime. The dominant magmatism was continental basaltic.

Many of the large refrigeration plants used in, the cooling systems on deep South African gold mines are situated on surface where they are exposed to seasonally and diurnally varying climatic conditions, and to a diurnally varying demand for cooling made by the mine. It has been traditional to accommodate the seasonal variation in climate by manual control applied to the plants at appropriate times of the year, and the plants have normally been specified to conform passively to the diurnal variations. This paper introduces new strategies for the active automatic control of the plants on a diurnal cycle, and shows that attractive benefits in energy and chilled water resource management can be accrued through the use of these strategies. The results have been derived through the modelling and simulation of a representative refrigeration plant.

Rock bolting and rock-bolting systems depend for success on attention to a number of simple techniques. Failure to appreciate this fact can lead to disappointing results. Careful study of rock characteristics and placement methods can allow a change to highly successful rock bolt per- formance. A number of examples are quoted to illustrate the sig- nificant improvement in results which can be achieved by use of the most suitable combination of characteristics.
