This subject is to be discussed in greater depth by Mike Sharwood. It has also been the subject of a mini-symposium by the Melbourne Branch of the AusIMM in October, 1993. The papers from this symposium were distributed to the membership late last year "to raise their consciousness and to promote greater awareness and understanding of the wide range of liabilities that may arise". Mineralisation in alluvial diamond or vein gold deposits is often hosted in trapping mechanisms. For instance, diamonds are nested in bedrock depressions such as gullies and potholes which were carved out by the sea long before the diamond deposition took place. Similarly, gold mineralisation can precipitate in the necks of a boudinage structure. In such deposits, the spatial distribution of the mineralisation is governed by the mutual arrangement of the trapsites and by the grade variations within each trapsite. Reliable estimates can be obtained only if they rest on a proper knowledge of both degrees of variability. This creates a challenging sampling problem, as during the exploration phase it is important to have a good global mean estimate to enable decision making towards the future. A similar problem occurs for local estimates at a later stage of development. To understand and manage the sampling for global means, specific sampling procedures are required based on an appropriate choice of sample support size and spacing. Estimates from such sampling campaigns should be unbiased, and the less variability they display, the better the sampling parameters. The performance and impact of sampling parameters are tested and compared on different simulated deposits.

Nuclear power stations to be installed in Australia will be fuelled from Australian resources of raw materials. This will require the establishment of new manufacturing industries and the eventual expansion of established activities, especially in uranium mining and the preparation of precision metal products. This paper presents some predictions of the possible growth of nuclear power installations in Australia. These might amount to 4000 MWE by 1985 and 11,500 MWE by 1990 and towards the end of the century, about 50% of new generating plant might be nuclear. Predictions are given of the demands for materials (uranium and zirconium) and fuel manufacturing services for four reactor systems which might be considered in the programme. - The availability of raw materials and technical capability place Australia in a particularly good position to undertake the manufacture of nuclear fuel'; in addition to satisfying the domestic demand we should actively seek export markets for these products.

"The Batu Hijau copper/gold mine, operated by PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara, is located in the south-western part of Sumbawa Island, Indonesia, and is situated ~10 km from the south coast at an altitude of ~450 m above sea level. The mine became fully operational by year 2000 and processes approximately 120 000 t of ore per day that contain an average of 0.53 per cent copper and 0.4 per tonne (g/t) gold. Tailings management at the mine includes a deep-sea tailings placement (DSTP) system that discharges tailings through a pipeline via an outfall located at a depth of 125 m at the head of the submarine Senunu Canyon (Figure 1).The environmental impact assessment undertaken prior to approval of the DSTP evaluated both on-land tailings storage facility (TSF) and DSTP options for tailings management. Negative attributes of the on-land TSF included removal of approximately 2300 ha of forest/agricultural land, the potential relocation of >2000 people from their communities, the high average annual rainfall (>2500 mm) and potential for earthquakes presenting challenges for water management and creating a long-term risk of failure. The final choice and Indonesian Government’s approval of DSTP was also influenced by the close proximity of the deep submarine canyon to the mine. The Batu Hijau mine is one of the larger examples of DSTP in the world and deposits tailings at the greatest depth. The depth of the main canyon increases to >2000 m within 20 km of the coast, and to >3000 m approximately 50 km from the coast.The DTSP at Batu Hijau must comply with an environment management plan (EMP) and environment monitoring plan of permit stipulation that approved its commencement in 2000; updated in 2010 and 2015. The environmental management objectives were to avoid impacts to highly productive components of the ecosystem such as coral reefs, mangroves, surface waters and fisheries, and confinement of impacts to areas of low biological productivity. In the vicinity of the DSTP outfall and within the Senunu Canyon, the management plan predicted significant adverse impacts from the DSTP on the marine ecosystem in the form of: reduction in sea water quality due to elevated turbidity and dissolved copper concentrations burial of benthic organisms a reduced habitat for demersal fish.Recovery of the pelagic and benthic ecosystem to preoperating conditions was predicted to occur within the first two years after operations cease. The CSIRO has performed due diligence studies to independently verify compliance with permits and evaluate new monitoring objectives (Apte et al, 2004; Simpson et al, 2010; Angel et al, 2015), and has performed assessments of environmental monitoring data on the tailings footprint and ore stockpile processing against the above environmental objectives (Simpson and Angel, 2015).CITATION:Angel, B M, Simpson, S L and Waworuntu, J, 2016. This paper describes a detailed geostatistical study of producing copper orebodies at Mount Isa Mines Limited in Queensland, Australia. As a result of this work, kriging has been adopted for grade estimation for final stope design at Isa Mine. Extensive variogram and back analysis studies indicate that one relative variogram model can be used to give optimal kriged grade estimates from production sampling throughout the 100 million tonne copper orebody complex. The kriging method replaces a computer technique used at [sa Mine based on inverse distance weighting using parameters chosen from experience.Comparative stope designs based on 10 million tonnes of ore indicate a 16% increase in minable ore tonnage at a grade well above the cut-off, as a result of the geostatistical work.Although this paper is written as a practical description with simple explanations of geostatistical concepts, the theory and use of relative variograms has been expanded. A possible link is suggested between relative variograms and first order kinetics of natural mineral concentration processes.

At Port Latta in Tasmania, Savage River Mines operates vertical shaft furnaces for the firing of pelletised magnetite concentrates. At times the temperature profile of the furnace has changed markedly, necessitating the- burning of greater quantities of fuel to maintain good pellet quality. A study of the oxidati=of magnetite concentrates was under- taken because this exothermic process supplies much of the heat required to indurate the pellets. Using the thermal analyses methods, different magnetite concentrates from Australian and overseas were heated in air under identical conditions, to compare rates of oxygen uptake and of heat release. In addition, a compari- son was made of the oxidation behaviour of different particle size fractions of a selected concentrate. Particle size analyses, x-ray diffraction and dilatometer tests were used to aid inter pretation of the thermal analysis traces. The investigation emphasized the importance of particle size and ferrous iron content in determining' oxidation rates from the commencement of heating.

In reviewing recent developments in the process mineralogy of gold it is convenient to distinguish between visible (>0.1 pm) and invisible gold (1 - 2 pm in size in polished section; these can scan the surface of a polished section, identifying the gold minerals, recording co-ordinates of the grains for subsequent examination, and making measurements of areas and sizes of the grains. However, problems of sample reliresentivity in polished section mean that such data may not give good quantification of gold mineral proportions and liberation/locking characteristics and other methods are required for this (amalgamation, cyanidation, ultra-fine milling and cyanidation). Characterisation of invisible gold in bulk material (eg a sulphide concentrate) can be done by mineral separation, ultra-fine milling and cyanidation or by quantitative point analyses of a large number of mineral grains. Analytical methods include electron microprobe analysis (detection limit normally -200 ppm but -10 ppm by using special techniques), ion microprobe analysis (secondary ion mass spectrometry - SIMS; detection limit -0.2 ppm) or proton microprobe analysis (PIXE; detection limit

The role and policies of the Aboriginal Sacred Sites Protection Authority are described in conjunction with the provisions of the N.T Aboriginal Sacred Sites Act 1978. Comment is made on the application of the legislation and these policies to development proposals in the Northern Territory. A brief review of criticisms by both developers and Land Councils is provided together with responses to these Criticisms.

In response to requests from the iron ore mining industry, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Division of Mineral Physics has developed a number of bulk analysis techniques in which analyses are obtained directly from ore samples weighing many kilograms or from ore located on conveyor belts.Because penetrating neutron and gamma radiation is used, measurements are obtained from a large volume of ore, which ensures thal the analyses are represelllative of the bulk.Two different gamma-ray techniques have been developed to measure iron ore grade. The first is based on backscallering of 60CO gamma rays, while the second involves measurement of the annihilation radiation which arises when the ore is irradiated wilh 226Ra gamma rays. Both techniques measure the iron concentration with an accuracy (1 s) of better than 0.4% Fe.A thermal-neutron irradiation technique using a 252Cf neutron source has been developed for the simultaneous determination of iron and the aluminium impurity (expressed as AI2O3) in iron ore fines on a conveyor bell. Because the conveyor speed must not exceed about 0.05 m/s, if good accuracy for AI2O3 is required, an auxiliary analysis bell is required Lo avoid inLerference with normal ore processing. Dynamic trials have demonstrated that accuracies of 0.6% Fe and 0.1% AI2O3 can be obtained.

In areas where land suitable for development is a scarce resource, an upgraded post-mining land use can result in economic benefits to both the mining company and to the community.A study undertaken at Aberdare Colliery near Ipswich during 198611987 assessed the costs and benefits of developing the site following mining for grazing, forestry and residential uses. The proposed fmal land use plan comprised a combination of these uses that can be upgraded to higher valued uses once subsidence monitoring of backfilled open-cut areas and dumps indicates that total settlement has reached acceptable levels for development to proceed.The study involved the documentation of existing site environmental parameters and the delineation of site opportunities and constraints. The unpredictable nature of settlement over backfilled open-cuts and overburden dumps represents the major constraint to urban development on mined areas.

Thank you chairman, good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. In my talk this afternoon I intend to cover a brief history, some of the recent experiences and an overview of the McArthur River project.If we consider the themes of this forum, Obstacles and Opportunities, I can confidently say that in attempting to develop the McArthur River deposit Mount Isa Mines Limited (MIM) must have encountered almost every obstacle that can be imagined. However the large size and the high grade of the deposit has ensured an opportunity, from which it is very difficult to walk away from.The McArthur River Here's Your Chance (HYC) Deposit is located in the Northern Territory of Australia. It was discovered by Mount Isa Mines Limited geologists in 1955 and is one of the largest known sedimentary stratiform zinc-lead-silver deposits. The deposit has been the subject of numerous investigations and considerable expenditure culminating in a major feasibility study in 1979. There were a number of factors which prevented development, these being the size of the project, the fine grained mineralization, geographical location, market, social and capital cost. The latter had been estimated in the 1979 study to be $800 million at that time.

Jarosites (KFe3(SO4)2(OH)6) are examples of minerals that are highly effective scavengers of toxic elements, and are abundant in acid rock drainage systems, acid sulfate soils, metallurgical wastes and other contaminated sites. The K, Fe and S sites can be filled by toxic elements such as Cd, Cu and Zn, but the mechanisms of this incorporation are not well understood.We have used atomistic simulation methods to model the jarosite (102) surface and its interactions with Cd, Zn and Cu, in order to understand the mechanisms by which these potentially toxic elements are incorporated into the K-jarosite structure. Our results suggest that incorporation via a defect complex consisting of an impurity cation at the K site charge balanced by a K vacancy stabilises the (102) surface in the order Cu>Zn>Cd.

The Argentine pyroclastic loess arevulcanogenic deposits, which have their sources in the circumnpacific rim. The object of this work is to realize a de-tailed mineralogical characterization of this sediments, to use it like a geo logic outline which regiters discordance or similarity in them, The sampling zone extend from 714N-4125 to 622W-339S. The descriptions of these sediments was considered like basic, mesobasic or acid rocks. The basic sediments, looking like andesite-basaltic composition, are fill-ing the andean valley. The mesobasic one have a similar composition with a pyro-clastic dacite rock, and have been found in marshy pleistocene sediments in the intermountain valley and in the pampeana prairies. The acid ashed conform rhyoda-cite-rhyolite sediments which form the pampeana loess covers in the prairie.

FOR some time past keen interest has been shown in both America and South Africa in the mining drill-steel problem. This interest has extended to Australian mining fields, and Australian drill users, ever desirous of increasing efficiency, are vigorously attacking the problem. The writer has recently been engaged in the investigation of the problem on two of ,the biggest mining fields in Australia, and has formed very definite conclusions concerning the causes of many drill-steel casualties. He puts these views forward in the hope that they may be of interest to, both drill manufacturers and drill users. The subject is here dealt with mainly from the aspect of the properties of the steel and the modifications of these properties whensubjected to various manipulations. It is generally admitted that the drilling machine has greatly increased in power and efficiency during recent years, and the consequence is that the machine is demanding better service from the steel. This is being impressed on the drill users by an increase in steel casualties. This fact has led many mining people to the view that the machine has developed so rapidly that the steel maker has not been able to keep pace, and that consequently the steel isfailing by fatigue 0:1; so-called crystallization. This view is rather depressing. The writer, on the other hand, is inclined to discountenance fatigue as a serious factor under good normal working conditions where the steel is carefully manufactured and supplied to the user under suitable structural and sound conditions, and has subsequently received kind treatment at the hands of the drill sharpener and the drill user.It is not reasonable to attribute failures to fatigue until it has definitely been proved that the steel is fundamentally sound and is in the best structural condition to resist the stresses it is called upon to withstand, and, this being so, that all fundamental principles of...

THOSE who dabble in m.ining are no exception to the general rule that persons who know a little of a subject are apt to think that they know all about it. Some colour may be lent to the belief that anyone may succeed in mining when we hear stories ofsuccessful diggers and others who have accidentally dropped on to something good through no foresight on their part; but we seldom hear the contra account of the far larger number who fail. Those who go more thoroughly into the subject, and take up mining as a profession, know very well that it is not one that can be carried out successfully by rule of thumb, but when they point this out to the public they are credited with trying to make it a closed profession; and outsiders are for ever trying to find out the 'trade secrets,' at the same time spurning the main one, which is hard study, experience, and the ability to apply their knowledge.The average mining man is not rich. When he amasses a fortune it is generally through speculation rather than professional work, thought no doubt his technical knowledge may have assisted him. However, making a fortune and running a mine are twodifferent things.

Dimension stone is the term generally given to rock used in building construction. During early European history in Otago, locally available dimension stone products were easily obtained. Crude rock shelters built on river banks with schist rock within Central Otago soon gave way to more established and sophisticated permanent homesteads constructed with the same materials. Victorian architectural achievement is celebrated in Otago with many fine bluestone block buildings. When the University Council decided to build substantially in stone, it narrowly escaped disaster. It was well known at the time that brick in Dunedin was of an inferior quality and that it soon wasted. Rev Dr Stuart said before the 1879 Commission that æthe Council had some old-world notions and liked to have the University with some architectural styleÆ. Contemporary utilisation of dimension stone is generally restricted by expense to a simple veneer. Stone products produced from Otago quarries have found ready markets in other areas in New Zealand , particularly prior to the share market crash in 1987.

The Tolukuma Gold Deposit is hosted by metamorphic and volcanic rocks, and igneous intrusions. Dilatant structures for the main veining appear to be provided by post-metamorphic flexure/faulting; syn-mineralisation tectonics is recognised from the en-echelon patterns of much of the veining. A SSE trending structure containing high grade mineralisation has acted as a major dilational zone within or at the contacts of porphyry intrusions. An ESE trend has controlled numerous dilational structures splaying eastward from the SSE vein structure and containing medium grade mineralisation.Early hydrothermal activity (Stage I) is represented by unmineralised, pyrite-rich brecciation and fracturing. The theoretical and experimental studies have been done to clarify the hearth flow of iron and slag. The results of dissections show that the hearth can be treated as a packed bed of coke hav- ing good permeability with a coke-free layer at the bottom of the hearth. 3-dimensional numerical calculations of hearth flow with and without a coke-free layer are carried out, and the results are assured by a water model simulation. The influences of a coke-free layer on the iron flow and the discharge route of iron and slag are examined. The 3-dimensional flow pattern can be represented simply by the travelling time, which depends on characteristically the profile of coke-free layer and the quantity of iron in the hearth. Those flow parameters could be obtained by the results of radioisotope tracer test ( Co for iron flow, and Sc for slag flow) at several furnaces. As a result, it is found that the coke-free layer repeats the cycle of appearance and disappearance at several-month intervals. This cycle corres- ponds to large temperature fluctuation at the bottom of hearth. The relation between iron flow and skull (solidified iron, coke and deposited graphite mixed layer) on the hearth brick was studied by the model experiment and the thermal analysis based on the indications of thermocouples installed in the bottom of the hearth. If a thin coke-free layer is formed on the skull, a fast iron flow is generated in the layer, and melts away the skull. The growth and melting of skull produces the fluctuation of thermal load on a bottom brick, causing brick Damage.

Hamersley Iron's pellet plant at Dampier involves ore drying, dry grind- ing in ball mills, disc balling and, indurating by use of the straight grate system. After five years of operation, the plant's output has been increased from the design capacity level of 2 M.T.P.Y. to 2.5 M.T.P.Y. Steps taken in equipment modifica- tion, improvements in process control, and changes in maintenance procedures are described.
