An unprecedented growth in demand for coal exports has placed pressure on multi-user coal chains to guarantee that their capacity expansion projects will meet the required demand. These projects, however, are taking place in an increasingly complex commercial and technical environment - competing rail and coal terminal service providers as well as a myriad of competing mine operators, all needing to operate in an increasingly integrated manner to get the most out of expensive shared assets.Increasing system complexity and integration has driven the need for more holistic and sophisticated analysis tools. The capacity of coal chain subsystems, such as mine, rail and port, can no longer be determined effectively in isolation. Understanding the nature of the interactions between these subsystems, their sensitivity to uncertainty and the resultant capacity of the integrated system is the key to both maximising value and minimising risk.Recently, TSG has worked closely together with the Integrated Logistics Company and a number of key stakeholders in the Dalrymple Bay Coal Chain to develop independent system master plans. These master plans have provided a quantitative and rational assessment of coal chain capacity in its current state and a prediction of its capacity once a pipeline of committed capacity improvements is in place. Despite the importance of the primary crushing stage, performance optimisation is not well analysed with sufficient focus to give improvement opportunities. At the Newcrest owned Telfer operation, liner life plays an important part in scheduling planned maintenance. Major consideration is given to monitoring crusher performance, as the highly abrasive nature of the feed significantly impacts the liner wear life. A study was undertaken by the lead author which focused on establishing a strong baseline of accurate data pertaining to the performance of the crusher, in terms of, operating parameters, liner life and key machine design factors. As part of the study, mining feed materials were examined for a particular set of liners and this revealed that improved methods should be pursued. Due to the competitive nature of the mining industry, the business solution to complex problems with long shutdown cycles should be streamlined to incorporate a non-operational modelling approach that is significantly more efficient than traditional online trial and error methods. In order to dramatically reduce the time and business risks, it was decided to engage services to model and simulate the liner life by varying main operational and mechanical factors. The key to all simulation work is gathering high quality baseline data. Such data allowed deployment of the Kinematic Crusher Model and validation of the model against worn 2D wear liner profiles. The proven model was then successfully deployed to predict operational values that defined crusher performance. To enhance the study, further investigation into a set of mechanical and operational simulations generated a sensitivity matrix measuring key performance parameters throughout the wear life of the liners. The study revealed throughput as a highly sensitive parameter and a change in eccentric throw provided the greatest improvement in extending liner wear life.

Given the ongoing global crises of climate change and nature loss, with the World Economic Forum (WEF) identifying them as the top risks to global economies in terms of both likelihood and impact in the coming ten years (WEF, 2022), there is increasing, pressing demand for companies to demonstrate they understand their climate and nature related risks and look toward contributing genuine beneficial environmental outcomes. Within the mining industry, mine closure is the obvious field in which climate and nature positive strategy can be linked with operations. To do so, there is a need to challenge long-held assumptions around closure in the mining and regulatory context; particularly, to shift the focus from closing individual mines to considering regional opportunity generation and value creation.

Bulk cargoes, including iron ore fines, must be shipped according to the rules agreed by the member states of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). One critical safety measure is the transportable moisture limit (T?ML) required for Group A cargoes (cargoes that may liquefy). A number of shipping incidents involving iron ore fines from India, where liquefaction of the cargo was suspected to be the cause, have brought the issue of iron ore fines T?ML into the spotlight. Extensive research has been undertaken by the major iron ore producers from Australia and Brazil to support the IMO in developing regulations for the shipment of iron ore fines. To this end, iron ore companies sponsored the AMIRA P1097 project to establish a modified T?ML test approach specific to iron ore fines. The project was undertaken by TUNRA Bulk Solids, CSIRO’s Centre for Bulk Solids and Particulate Technology and the University of Auckland, with project leadership provided by Creative Process Innovation. While coal seam gas is considered to be an unconventional gas, the proliferation of areas under exploration and development mean that it is rapidly becoming main stream. The potential of New Zealand's coals to produce coal seam gas has been recognised for some time. However, key market drivers have not been suitable for the progression of this potential into reality. Kenham Holdings Ltd and CRL Energy Ltd, recognising the potential for the gas in New Zealand have initiated what is the largest ever assessment of New Zealand's coal seam gas potential. The premature demise of the giant Maui field has raised the focus of new gas developments and has increased interest in what we are doing. Over the past couple of years Kenham Holdings Ltd and CRL Energy Ltd have approached the assessment of the coal seam gas potential in a staged programme. Preliminary assessment of the data on the permit areas indicates that the potential resource may be up to 500 PJ. To date, preliminary appraisals have been completed or are underway on a significant number of fields. Exploratory drilling has been completed or initiated on several of those fields, with results from this work being fed into the preliminary modelling as it has become available. Given that in many of these areas there is no pre-existing information concerning their gas potential and world wide experience with lignite is practically nonexistent, it has been a steep learning curve with many surprises. However, initial gas content results and preliminary gas flow models have been on the whole, rather pleasing, with the commerciality of some developments already apparent.

With the advances in software speed and capability, many of us now are running multiple scenarios on entire models rather than just testing small areas or a few blocks. In the authors experience both the geological and geostatistical academic theory and our rules of thumb, often prove un-useable or incorrect in the real world we work in. The only way to truly validate and tune our models is to complete the entire model and ‘see if it works’. If it lacks some property we were expecting, then we need to find out why and/or run different scenarios to see what changes. This is not always possible with tight project timelines but we find ourselves doing more and more of this sort of thing, and in so doing, understand that every deposit is different and requires its own ‘rules’ to get valid and useful results. For the purposes of this paper, this process is termed Empirical Geostatistics. Take Clayton Deutsch’s ‘all realisations all of the time’ concept a step back. Before you even think of simulating, test the alternate realisations generated by alternate parameters such as different domaining, varying search neighbourhood parameters etc.

Minerals and Metals Group (MMG) subsidiary Lane Xang Minerals Ltd operates a single site copper and gold mine near Sepon in Lao PDR. Gold production commenced in 2002 and first cathode copper production was in March 2006. Plant throughputs for gold and copper are currently 2.5 Mt/yr and 1.4 Mt/yr respectively; use of a second tailings dam has commenced accordingly. Although the increased catchment area creates opportunities for more storage to reduce demand on other water sources, especially during the dry season, it also creates greater requirements for water treatment capacity.The water balance for mining operations in a tropical monsoon environment with dry winters presents on going management challenges. A successful mining operation depends on a careful balance of water inputs and outputs. The challenge prior to every wet season is having enough storage capacity to absorb potential rainfall. Plant operation in the dry season benefits from water captured and stored from the wet season which reduces the dependence on river water. Release of excess water to the environment is necessary to cope with the overall positive water balance and depends on suitable and effective treatment of water in accordance with the environmental guidelines.Ausenco has recently built and commissioned a second water treatment plant at the Sepon Copper Plant to process tailings decant water.  The objective of the second Sepon water treatment facility is to increase the site water discharge capacity to maintain the water balance and reduce the dependence on river water.  Decant water treatment is required to precipitate the contained heavy metals prior to discharging to surrounding wetlands.  The main metal that needs to be removed from the site water to meet discharge water quality requirements is manganese, as heavy metals are already precipitated to required levels in neutralisation before the tailings are sent to the storage facilities. A site layout provision for removal of manganese to produce a saleable carbonate precipitate is incorporated in the polishing plant design (future installation).

Fe-26Si-9B (wt per cent) alloy has been identified as a potential high-temperature phase change material (PCM) due to its attractive properties, such as its high latent heat of fusion and low volumetric change during solid/liquid transition. For the successful utilisation of this alloy into thermal energy storage (TES) systems, the development of a cost-effective production method is essential. Presently, the Fe-26Si-9B alloy is produced by mixing FeSi alloys with either pure boron element or FeB alloys. However, the use of pure boron is financially prohibitive, and the carbothermic reduction results in high greenhouse gas emissions and high energy consumption in the production of FeB alloys. In this regard, our study proposes a silicothermic reduction method to produce Fe-26Si-9B PCM by using FeSi alloys and B2O3-based oxides. Accordingly, the influence of various parameters on the production process was investigated, including operating temperature, holding time, B2O3 content in the added oxides, and initial Slag/Metal (S/M) ratio. Based on the experimental results, the optimal parameters for producing FeSiB alloys with over 9 wt per cent boron were determined. Consequently, it was documented that the FeSi alloys and the added oxides enriched with 50– 65 wt per cent B2O3 should be subjected to temperatures ranging from 1550–1650°C, maintain an initial S/M ratio exceeding 1, and ensure a holding duration beyond 1 hr. Moreover, the energy consumption of this process was estimated to be ~1.86 MWh/t metal and the mass loss was lower than 7 per cent. Therefore, silicothermic reduction offers a sustainable approach for producing FeSiB alloys with a boron content above 9 wt per cent.

AustraliaÆs opal and sapphire mining industry has fallen from its peak in the 1980s and 1990s into a significant low today. This is not due to exhaustion of the resource, but instead an over-reliance of the Australian miner on achieving a fair price for the gemstone product from offshore middlemen dealers. Gemstone and geological research is also at a low as Federal higher education expenditure has fallen with research institutions relying increasingly on private funding in an environment of restricted autonomy and flexibility for researchers. What little remaining research skills the universities have is being bled into the private sector as a result of the mining boom and encouraged by lower than average academic salaries. Nevertheless, some highly innovative research has been taking place, often by self-funded individuals and retired academics simply with a desire to advance the understanding of the particular branch of science in which they are interested. New models for the formation of sapphire and opal are now beginning to be applied to the exploration for these gemstone commodities. This research, together with well thought out plans for managing the gemstone product through its value-adding steps to the jewellery retail level, has the potential to bring about a resurgence in the Australian gemstone industry.

The risk from fire remains one of the most serious of underground mine disaster scenarios. The impacts of mine fires on the underground ventilation system and the production of toxic gases have been difficult to model and therefore assessments have relied largely on empirical data, historical precedent and subjective opinions. Underground fire modelling software has had limited availability and been technically challenging and time consuming to use especially for routine mine investigations. There has also been no well-accepted set of assumptions for fire modelling in mines, which has resulted in a lack of confidence in adopting its use more widely. This paper describes modelling of three critical fire scenarios in underground hard rock mines: a fire (LHD) in an underground diesel refuelling facility, a fire in an underground explosives magazine and a fire on an underground ore transport conveyor. Modelling was undertaken using VentsimÆs VentFIREÖ fire simulation module. It describes the basis of design, the key assumptions, the methodology used and provides examples of the outputs, conclusions and recommendations. It reviews the impacts of these fires on egress and entrapment strategies in the mine. Some general principles regarding improvements to ventilation circuit design based on this analysis are also recommended. The IsaMillÖ is challenging the way that plants are designed and operated. This paper challenges existing designs of concentrator flow sheets, particularly focusing on magnetite circuits.   From what has started out as a small scale ultra fine grinding mill in the pharmaceutical and pigment industries, it has been redesigned and improved upon for mineral processing, and has been the mainstay of fine grinding applications for over ten years. These applications have required energy efficient grinding to succeed, and have been predominately in the base metals industry.   Further development of the IsaMillÖ has now resulted in the machines being able to treat larger tonnages, with higher capacity motors. This development, along with the introduction of purpose designed ceramic media, has allowed the mill to treat courser feed sizes. At the same time, the mill still offers highly efficient grinding, and has enabled it to be operated in coarser tertiary and secondary grinding applications.   The acceptance of the mill in coarser applications, predominately in base metals and PGM applications, has enabled the IsaMillÖ to be a serious contender for beneficiation in other minerals. One such application is the potential for IsaMillsÖ to be part of magnetite flow sheets, which are being considered in Australia to meet the growing iron demand of China. The high energy efficiency of the IsaMillÖ compared to conventional technologies, as well as the smaller infrastructure requirements, provides a great opportunity to reduce the power intensity of magnetite circuits.   This paper will examine the use of IsaMillÖ technology in conventional grinding applications, including recent testwork in a primary grinding base metal circuit, as well as testwork on magnetite ore comparing a lab scale IsaMillÖ with a lab scale Tower Mill.   The growing demand for minerals over the next decade, coupled with higher energy cost, will result in energy efficient technology, such as the IsaMillÖ, being included in standard circuit design.

The Australian mining industry is a significant contributor to the nation’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and like any industry, it must make efforts to reduce these. Medium- and long-term strategies will include the replacement of diesel engines with alternative energy sources, but what can be done in the short-term to reduce diesel consumption and hence CO2 emissions? Haul trucks are identified as the major contributors of CO2 emissions in the mining fleet and this paper focuses on firstly identifying what drives haul truck emissions and secondly, discussing what is the role of the Fleet Management System (FMS) in reducing these. A key enabler of this is having a robust fuel consumption model within the FMS, and I describe how this may be done. Besides novel approaches to incorporating fuel consumption (CO2) management into truck assignment algorithms, this paper also describes how the FMS can be used to implement and manage procedures and policies to reduce haul truck emissions.

Due to their ability to produce high-resolution images of the subsurface to great depths, seismic surveys provide critical inputs to almost all oil and gas exploration projects. However, with some notable exceptions, seismic surveys have rarely been used in mineral exploration. In the past, this was due to both technical and financial reasons. Significant developments on both fronts mean that seismic surveys can now offer substantial benefits to mineral exploration and mining, and surveys conducted for exploration can provide important data sets for mine planning over the life of a mining project.We present case history data that show that seismic surveys can greatly assist with mapping the 3D distribution of lithologies and alteration and, in favourable circumstances, directly detect mineralisation in and around mineral systems. As a result of their high spatial sampling density, seismic surveys are also highly effective at mapping structures that can remain undetected or poorly characterised by drilling alone. These structures may host or provide important vectors to mineralisation. They can also be particularly important when planning shafts, raise bores, declines, stopes and open pit walls. A further benefit of seismic surveys is that they can remotely provide information on geotechnical rock parameters that are used for rippability, slope stability, blasting and ground support.CITATION:Turner, G, Urosevic, M, Pridmore, D and Dwyer, J, 2015. The founder of social psychology is sometimes identified as Kurt Lewin. In a 1947 article, Kurt Lewin coined the term ‘group dynamics’. He described this notion as the way that groups and individuals act and react to changing circumstances. Lewin theorised that when a group is established it becomes a unified system with unique dynamics that cannot be understood by evaluating members individually. The discipline of social psychology really emerged out of World War II and tackled questions associated with human judgement and decision-making by the Nazis. For a comprehensive look at the development of social psychology look at Abelson, Frey and Gregg (2004).Social psychology is concerned with the way social arrangements affect human judgement and decision-making. What the author has done is apply the knowledge of this new discipline to an understanding of risk, safety and leadership. This paper will explain some of the developments in social psychology, such as the discovery of the bystander effect, Groupthink, bounded rationality, heuristics, risk homeostasis and the Milgram effect.The social psychology of risk tackles the way decisions are made about risk in their social context. Unless organisations understand that decision-making is socially conditioned, they are unlikely to be able to tackle the complexities of culture change or the development of risk maturity.The paper will offer a new understanding of why people do what they do, how risk makes sense and why a ‘dumb down’ approach to safety is dangerous. The US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) conducted compliance assistance diesel particulate matter (DPM) sampling throughout the underground metal and non-metal mining industry. Based on that sampling, MSHA identified mines that were having difficulty meeting the DPM limit. To provide further assistance, MSHA then visited approximately 60 of the mines that were experiencing difficulty complying with the DPM standard. As part of these visits, DPM exposures were measured and control technologies for DPM were observed and assessed. Controls consisted of ventilation, clean engines, environmental cabs, alternative fuels, diesel particulate filters (DPF) and work practices. The focus of the follow-up compliance assistance visits was to assess control effectiveness and to make recommendations to mines experiencing difficulty in meeting the DPM standard. At each mine visited, the ventilation controls were evaluated, engine emissions were determined for equipment in use, environmental cabs were examined, and operational practices were noted. Additionally, control technologies, including alternative fuels and DPF were evaluated in several mines. A comparison was made of mine and section airflow to equipment particulate indices. Based on engine emissions, horsepower and operating time, the contribution of individual engine emissions to total emissions was made. Environmental cab integrity, positive pressure and air filtration systems were checked and operational practices relating to DPM exposure were assessed. This paper summarises the preference and magnitudes of controls that were typically used or needed for successful control of DPM. Additionally, results of the assessments of alternative fuels (including bio-diesel and water emulsion fuels) and DPF are presented.

This paper discusses the potential role of underground space and tunnelling in urban planning in Australia. The paper gives examples of the infrastructure and commercial applications of underground space which have been effectively used overseas but have been slow to be considered as a part of urban planning in Australia. In particular, the paper looks at underground quarrying and underground commercial development and their potential use in the urban environment. Existing sites and potential sites for quarrying and/or commercial use have been classified using a system developed by the author. Underground quarrying may provide some solutions for planning problems involving sand and aggregate supplies, waste disposal and other uses. Commercial development involving underground excavation may be accepted if the cost of underground commercial development can be shown to be equivalent to the cost of above ground development. The paper concludes that one role of the underground construction industry is to promote tunnelling and underground space amongst architects, town planners and planning decision-makers. The Australian Underground Construction and Tunnelling Association (AUCTA) and the Australian Society for Trenchless Technology (ASTT) should be instrumental in actively promoting the use of underground space in society.

High-accuracy, solid-state digital reference barometers have proven to be well suited to conducting underground barometric pressure surveys. The only problem is their expense; at least A$4000 each. For this reason, and because barometric pressure surveys are not a routine undertaking, very few mines have been able to justify the purchase of suitable instruments. The author knows of only three Australian metalliferous mines that own them.However, this may soon change given the recent development of low-cost, mass-produced miniature barometric pressure transducers. These transducers were developed to provide an altimeter function in the latest generation of smartphones. The main purpose of the inbuilt altimeter function is to allow the smartphone to be aware of its altitude when the global positioning system satellite signal is lost.This paper describes a prototype barometer that was constructed using one of the most accurate of the latest generation of piezo-resistive smartphone barometric pressure transducers. The prototype instrument was constructed for less than five per cent of the cost of a commercially available digital reference barometer. The prototype was subsequently tested against a reference barometer at the University of Queensland’s Experimental Mine to verify its accuracy and suitability for measuring pressure differences between underground survey stations.It is expected that the instrument’s low cost will pave the way for barometric pressure surveys to become more commonly used in mines. In turn, the resulting improvement in knowledge of major underground pressure losses should allow mine ventilation officers and engineers to optimise their ventilation systems and potentially reduce overall operating costs.An alternative option would be to use a barometer-equipped smartphone as a survey instrument, provided that its inbuilt barometer module is sufficiently accurate.CITATION:Derrington, A S, 2015. The current work deals with the measurement of some thermophysical properties of Ca(NO3)2 based ternary nitrate molten salts as HTF (heat transfer fluid) / TES (Thermal Energy Storage) material for CSP (Concentrating solar power) plants. The density and viscosity of different compositions of the ternary salt mixture containing Ca(NO3)2, NaNO3 and KNO3 close to the liquidus has been experimentally measured. An attempt has also been made to measure the melting point of the salt using the cooling curve technique as well as Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Thermogravimetric analysis has also been performed to estimate the peak operating temperature of the salt. Compatibility of suitable pipe material (SS304) with molten salt has also been discussed. The salt mixture proves to be a viable alternative to the already existing HTFs like Therminol VP-1 (organic oil) or Solar Salt® in regards to its lower melting point, wider operating range, low cost, nontoxicity, sufficiently high density and comparable viscosity.

The grouping and segregation error is one of Gy’s seven errors that cannot be measured in any qualitative manner because of its transient and changing characteristics each time the sample is handled mechanically. Attempts to calculate the mean and variance of the segregation error is considered by some as ‘an exercise in futility’ that would not help us achieve representative sampling. This research is aimed at understanding the process of segregation of dense, finely divided and dilute particulate materials supported in a clean quartz substrate during intense agitation. Several mixtures of fine-grained materials including steel, tungsten carbide and gold grains were used in these experiments. Four hundred grains of each of the minerals and metals at a top size of 2 mm were mixed with approximately 600 g of finely ground quartz material (95 per cent passing 2000 microns) in a 500 ml plastic jar with a sealable lid. The mineral–?metal mixtures were analysed in three steps using microfocus X-ray computed tomography. Step one consisted of rolling the containers on a flat surface in an attempt to concentrate the mineral and metal grains in the core of the supporting substrate; this is a base case that can be reconstructed after each session of analysis. The second step involved gentle and vigorous shaking of the mixtures in order to segregate the denser minerals and metals from the supporting quartz substrate. In some cases, a third step involved splitting the sample through a riffle splitter. Three-?dimensional images of the surface of each grain, its volume and its X-, Y- and Z-coordinates, before and after intense agitation of the container, were interpreted from the reconstruction of the tomographic X-ray data. The spatial analysis of grains using cell declustering and 3D variography provided a useful means of characterising the distribution of the grains in space and the extent to which they had become segregated during the process of agitation. Spatial analysis indicates that in general, grouping and continuity of grains is weakly developed. The modelled nugget effect remains high for most tests, indicating that grains of similar size did not group together strongly. Agitation through rolling provided the best continuity, although not consistently in the long axis of the plastic jar. The nugget effect was consistently highest, and the range of continuity shortest in samples that had been split, indicating that the grouping and continuity were reduced through splitting the sample. Initial results indicate that very little segregation of the minerals and metals occurs in the quartz substrate. This is somewhat counter-intuitive, but suggests that the effects of agitation on mixtures of dense minerals and metals in substrates of lower density do not lead to excessive segregation. Differences in behaviour between dense materials in response to agitation are evident. Grains of different composition and shape did not group and segregate in a predictable manner in response to the agitation methods. This research presents a snapshot and insight into the trends, patterns, and common considerations identified in the current standing of real-time tailings dam monitoring practice. Based primarily on information derived from concurrent research by the author (in form of a Catalogue of Real-time Instrumentation and Monitoring Techniques for Tailings Dams), challenges and opportunities when transitioning to a real-time monitoring system are discussed. Learnings and key considerations between different monitoring approaches are explored, including themes of limitations and advantages that were observed consistently through global supplier feedback.
