Although mining companies have made broad corporate-level commitments to adopt sustainability, there continue to be problems when attempts are made to adopt higher-level sustainability aspirations and translate them into appropriate targets and methods at the more-specific operational level. The integration of sustainability principles into minerals processing operational decision-making processes has unique challenges that are not addressed adequately by current tools and methodologies, yet impacts from operational decisions can have longer-term effects realised at closure and rehabilitation.This paper describes a proposed methodology to achieve the integration of sustainability at the operational level through a systematic and rigorous process of identifying and qualifying sustainability issues and opportunities in an operation. The methodology, starting from a sustainability point of view rather than an operational one, guides the identification of process issues and opportunities by examining the operation, unit-by-unit, similar to a Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) process. Each issue or opportunity is qualified according to its measurability, scopes of impact and consequences so that it may be understood fully and the correct engineering problems are formed. Through improved decision-making to account for broader sustainability factors, operations can better address environmental and social expectations and pressures (both corporate and community, as well as immediate and in the longer-term), whilst still delivering on operational and business goals.The methodology has been tested with two case studies at minerals processing operations. At one site, the methodology identified a dust issue which had considerable business risks (loss of valuable product) compared to conventional engineering analysis processes. The other site also benefited from using the methodology as an opportunity to improve the operation of the milling and flotation circuits was identified. The opportunity not only showed a potential to improve operational efficiency, but also potential improvements in water and energy efficiency and a resulting increased resilience against water and energy supply risks. It was important to utilise the holistic approach of the methodology in the identification of opportunities at this site; the goals of the operation showed a strong coupling between water and energy issues which would be difficult to overcome using the operationÆs current organisational model, which deals with such issues separately of each other.CITATION:Tuazon, D, Corder, G D, Powell, M and Ziemski, M, 2012. Social licence to operate is becoming part of a mining company’s DNA in the same way as health and safety. Consequently, mining companies are receiving increasing pressure from their shareholders to ensure that they add enduring value to the local communities in which they operate. Apart from the shareholders, a company has responsibility to suppliers, customers, employees, the government and the community, which means under the social responsibility model they must be accountable to the other stakeholders. External and internal challenges in mining are increasing the difficulty and complexity of mines to operate. The external mining environment has a big impact on mining operations and is driving matters such as the focus on safety, responsible mining and resource management, sustainability issues, profitability and productivity. Considering this, it is expected that the widespread implementation of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) related practices across the mining industry in the next ten years will increase, not just for the big players but for juniors as well. Companies, investors, governments and insurers who fail to act on ESG matters are to likely face greater risks. Demonstrating leadership in ESG will ultimately become a differentiating factor and market participants have much to gain from embracing ESG stewardship as part of their competitive advantage. Stock Exchanges have an important role to play in advancing sustainability in the capital markets. It is for this reason that the Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) initiative was founded to serve as a global platform for exploring how exchanges can enhance performance on ESG issues and encourage sustainable investment. The SSE initiative provides an effective platform for dialogue between the United Nations, stock exchanges, investors, companies and regulators in the mining industry. The paper will explain why ESG reporting is crucial for the survival of a mining company and how the lack of transparency could be detrimental to its public image and shareholder relations. The paper will also identify bodies that regulate ESG reporting, as well as the available tools that provide guidelines on reporting ESG matters. Key ESG reporting parameters (at a global scale) will also be highlighted.

A world-class example of sustainable development in practice, the Local Resource Development Initiative (LRDI) grew from agreements between the Ambatovy nickel mine developers and the Government of Madagascar. A program of training and community development, the LRDI aims to maximise local benefits by optimising the integration of local resources during the construction period of the mine. By local resources, we mean the local labour force as well as local goods and services. Begun in 2007, the foundation of the LRDI is to integrate local resources into the mining project and where gaps are identified, design and implement training, mentoring and other programs to fill those gaps. The principal accomplishments are: the establishment of training centres that trained over 4000 people in little over one year, 96 per cent of whom hired to work at the mine; a support program for local micro, small and medium enterprises that has led to the award of 65 contracts for goods and services with training and mentoring of over 100 local businesses; and a number of special projects that have, among other results, strengthened local agricultural development and created employment for young people. The LRDI provides unique insights into key indicators and lessons learned to strengthen the social and economic sustainability of mining projects in developing countries. The paper will discuss these in terms, among others, of: the importance to project success of upstream planning to address socio-economic issues; the role of civil society and other local partners to strengthen and expand sustainability outcomes, and to spur governments to demand that major projects promote economic and social sustainability; and the integration of mine sustainability with sustained regional social and economic development.

Mining is experiencing a difficult period of low profitability and declining productivity. To achieve sustainability, mining companies are challenged with improving output, quality and safety while decreasing costs. At the same time, organisations are having to manage a workforce in which individuals no longer accept a traditional style of management, employees prefer more flexible employment, and diversity within teams is becoming the expected norm.Increasing organisational diversity has been shown to have a positive impact on performance and therefore sustainability. Gender diversity and equality between working men and women is the area most studied in this regard. Executives are becoming more aware of the correlation between gender diversity and performance with some larger organisations having dedicated resources to increase the number and status of women in their organisations. Despite this, limited improvement in gender equality is apparent globally over the last decade with some industries, including mining, going backwards. So why is this the case and what other strategies are available?In 2015, the United Nations Women National Committee Australia (UN Women NCA) in conjunction with Autopia released a white paper discussing the lack of visible change in gender equality despite the widespread implementation of merit-based personnel management strategies. Using research from around the world and thoughts from influential government, education and business leaders, the paper ‘Rethinking Merit’ debunks the myth of the meritocracy. It provides a number of recommendations for organisations committed to improving their performance and sustainability through diversity, including a variety of real-life company examples, instead of relying solely on merit-based decision-making.This paper takes the recommendations of ‘Rethinking Merit’ and applies them to the mining industry. It shows the relevance that rethinking merit has for the industry and why applying the recommendations can result in an increase in diversity, therefore enabling greater performance and sustainability of mining companies. This paper provides case studies from Aurizon, Iluka Resources and BHP Billiton and, as a guide for managers, a generic diversity strategy designed to be implemented alongside traditional merit-based personnel management techniques.CITATION:Hobbs, K, 2016. Gwalia gold mine is located close to the town of Leonora in the Goldfields region of Western Australia, some 830 km from Perth. The mine is wholly owned by St Barbara Ltd, an Australian Securities Exchange listed gold producer and explorer. The Gwalia mine is a deep, all-trucking mine and is serviced by a 10 km long decline from surface. Mining is currently 1540 m below surface. Reserves extend to 1820 m below surface and are open at depth. The mine produces in excess of 200 koz of gold per annum.The Leonora area is hot and arid, with a mean annual rainfall of 230 mm and a 95 per cent mean daily maximum temperature of 20.3°C wet-bulb and 35.6°C dry-bulb.The primary ventilation system comprises a 490 kg/s surface exhaust fan, which draws air down a parallel intake system consisting of the decline, and a dedicated fresh-air intake system extending to the bottom of the production zone. Cooling is provided via a surface bulk air cooler serviced by an ammonia refrigeration plant that delivers 150 kg/s of chilled water to the bulk air cooler.The refrigeration plant and bulk air cooler were installed in 2008. The design allows cooling to be increased over time by installing an additional refrigeration plant in a lead lag configuration with the current refrigeration plant when required.Since 2008, expansion and increased depth reached a point where the underground heat load exceeded the installed capacity of the existing 4.0 megawatt rated (MWR) refrigeration plant. In order to maintain the mine design conditions underground, upgrading of the existing refrigeration system was required to bring the cooling capacity to 7.5 MWR.Two expansion options were considered: the addition of an ammonia vapour-compression refrigeration machine similar to the existing one or a lithium bromide absorption refrigeration system using waste heat from the site power station. The original design and layout of equipment on-site meant that either could be used, allowing an assessment of the merits of both when additional cooling was required.The decision was made to install a lithium bromide absorption system on the lead side of the existing ammonia refrigeration plant. The demand for steel products in modern society is prompting the iron ore industry to optimise their operations to ensure sustainability of fines and lump products. One of the key components in the iron ore transportation chain are belt conveyors. The energy consumption of modern belt conveyor systems has reduced considerably over the past few decades, however, there is still significant scope for further reductions, especially when heavily loaded long overland belt conveyors are considered. A new rail based continuous bulk material transportation system has been developed by researchers at the University of Newcastle to reduce the energy consumption of heavily loaded and long overland conveyors. The Rail-Running Belt Conveyor technology is a state-of-the-art continuous belt conveying technology which provides an innovative and novel departure from conventional continuous bulk material transportation systems with significant energy and economic benefits. This paper presents an overview of a Rail-Running Belt Conveyor variant which considers an enclosed belt. Enclosed belt conveying has the benefits of encapsulating the bulk material, and thereby reducing dust emissions and moisture ingress, in addition to being able to negotiate smaller radius horizontal and vertical curves leading to greater flexibility. To quantify the primary differences between conventional conveying technologies, the Denver office of thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions (USA) developed a case study for an 11 km long conveyor. The conveyor design throughput was 2750 t/h and included a small net elevation loss of 10 m. When considering CAPEX the Rail-Running Pipe Conveyor equipment supply cost is approximately 45 per cent of the cost of a conventional pipe conveyor, while savings upwards of US$50M emerge for CAPEX combined with five years of OPEX. The savings vary with the topography and density of the bulk commodity, with iron ore generally showing increased savings because the high bulk density increases rubber losses in conventional conveyors.

Ridgeway Gold Mine (RGM) is an underground sublevel caving (SLC) operation that is owned and managed by Newcrest Mining Limited (NML). Production drill and blast practices are critical to the success of the SLC method at RGM. SLC production ring precharging was introduced in November 2001 to enhance these practices and deliver safety, productivity and cost improvements. Current precharging practices require up to two rings to be loaded ahead of the ring to be blasted in each drawpoint. The explosive may be required to remain in the up-holes for periods of four weeks or more prior to blasting. During this æsleepÆ time it is subjected to repeated shock from the blasting ofadjacent rings and from rings in adjacent drawpoints. The project described in this paper was designed to gain an understanding of the factors affecting explosive performance in the precharging environment and to develop explosive products and operating practices that would meet RGMÆs requirements in terms ofsaf ety, reliability and blast outcomes. Several months oflaboratory and field testing were required to characterise the explosive and quantify the effect of post-loading blasting shock. These results were used to determine the most appropriate loading and sleep time criteria for RGMÆs precharging practices. In addition, the information is being used to guide the development of the next generation of emulsion explosives for use in underground precharging operations.

In 2009, Peter Munro and Peter Tilyard examined the “human capital” in the mineral processing sector in a paper entitled Back to the Future (Munro and Tilyard, 2009). One of their major concerns was a general decline in technical skills and process knowledge, exacerbated by lack of appreciation of the impact this can have on process plant performance and, ultimately, profitability or sustainability of the industry. There are many reasons for this decline, not least of which are the work schedules of today’s metallurgists which have a very different balance between technical and non-technical responsibility than those in the past. However, a shift towards a more technical focus has potential to deliver a range of benefits for industry at large and for the individuals in it This paper discusses some options for development of core metallurgical and process engineering skills that can be used by graduates, employers and training providers.Key skills are identified and mapped against available opportunities for development, such as existing graduate programs, on-the job training and external courses. The authors also review a number of past and present high-quality graduate development programs, including the graduate development program in place at Mount Isa Mines in the 1980s and the Anglo Platinum Graduate Development Program (AGDP) currently operating in South Africa.

This paper describes results from a gender study for a new mine in Pajala, a small community in northern Sweden. Using a gender perspective, the study examines migration, education, local culture, the labour market, and work organisation as problems and opportunities in the regional context for the planned mine. The most obvious ‘gender issue’ for the Swedish mining industry is the very low percentage of employed women, which is even lower among mining workers. To recruit the best people, a company actively needs to attract both women and men; however, the mining companies find it difficult to recruit women as cultural, labour market and educational traditions as well as the mining companies’ own cultures often make it difficult for women to find work in the mining industry.The Torneå river valley, the region surrounding Pajala, has a gender-segregated labour market and gender-stereotyped culture and few young women live in this traditional and oldish region. Many young people leave the region and this is especially true for women. Compared to the rest of Sweden, there is a low educational level, especially among the men. In the mining companies, as in many other male homosocial workplaces, the workplace culture has strong connections to a certain type of traditional masculinity (laddishness, a kind of ‘macho-style’) and for a long time this has excluded women. ‘Gender’, however, is not only a question of recruiting women to a male-dominated industry. An organisation that discriminates according to gender can become inflexible, hindering communication, learning, innovations and change processes. In mining companies, this can manifest itself in hesitant attitudes among the miners about safety as well as organisational and technological development.This study found that companies establishing a presence in this region should develop a strategy for how to deal with and manage the risks and opportunities in the surrounding society (the regional culture) as well as inside the company (the mining culture). This need to be strategic will also be required of future mining companies as they will face higher demands on safety, gender equality, and technology to become modern, efficient and lean organisations.

The role of a project metallurgist is diverse and covers input into the resource definition, mining studies, metallurgical test program development, process engineering and plant design, cost estimate preparation and financial analysis aspects of project feasibility studies. Mining project schedule and cost overruns can often be attributed to cutting short metallurgical test work, engineering and cost estimating leading up to commitment to development. In a significant number of cases this may result from the lack of understanding and commitment by the project proponent to the requisite metallurgical and processing studies required during the various pre-commitment stages of a mining project. Metallurgical test work, process development, engineering and cost estimating requirements for each stage of pre-commitment development are described together with a summary of the ongoing role of the project metallurgist during detailed engineering and commissioning of a process plant.

A numerical model has been developed to simulate the effectiveness and costs of a number of conceptual remedial measures aimed at reducing acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and its tributaries near the Stockton Coal Mine, situated on the West Coast of New Zealand. The Stockton Coal Mine has been in operation over the past 100 years. During that time, seepage from waste rock dumps has contributed to elevated acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and some of its tributaries. The yearly mean rainfall at the mine site is 6000 mm. The model, developed using GoldSim software, simulates rainfall, run-off and stream discharge for 26 tributaries. It then calculates acidity and metal concentrations in the mine impacted tributaries and the dilution downstream from the mine. The model has been calibrated to measured flow and acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and some of its tributaries. Acidity and metal loads are removed from the system in accordance with specified efficiencies and capacities of the respective conceptual remedial measures. The user can compare specific remedial measures, or a combination of conceptual remedial measures. The model predicts the acidity and metal concentrations at a number of monitoring stations for any remedial strategy selected by the user. It also calculates the capital and operational costs for that particular remedial strategy. This paper presents the development of the numerical model and describes how the end-user can use it to compare the efficiency and costs of various remedial strategies by running different æwhat ifÆ scenarios.

Mining is recognised as being one of the most dangerous industries in the world due to the difficult working conditions. Working in such hazardous circumstances in an underground mine often results in a variety of accidents. The working conditions at Kazakhstan’s underground mines have deteriorated owing to a lack of a risk-reduction plan and methodology. This paper evaluates different underground mines in Kazakhstan and demonstrates the employed mining method and the observed failure modes. Risk assessment has long been recognised as a valuable technique for preventing accidents. In the underground mining sector, risk assessment tools play an important role in avoiding work-related accidents. However, geotechnical uncertainty is a significant source of severe incidents like stress-induced roof collapse, wedge failure, seismicity etc, which result in human and financial losses. A geotechnical risk assessment performed early in the mine design process might assist justify a different mine design component, such as different support systems for a dangerous location within the mine openings during mining. The goal of this research is to create a damage/failure database aiming at the development of a geomechanical risk assessment methodology. This work identifies a thematic structure linked to risk assessment and management for the examined Kazakhstan mining sector. As part of the developed database, the dominant modes of failure within the Kazakhstan underground mining conditions were investigated. The study will provide opportunities to establish future research objectives for Kazakhstan’s mining industry where there are significant gaps between state-of-the-art research and mining operations in practice.

Water auditing and water conservation measures are fast becoming the quantitative tools for water balance reporting in the mining and minerals processing sector. Therefore, this paper was written to describe the process of water auditing in a goldmining environment and to contribute towards building an appropriate water management framework for The Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for sustainable resource processing (CSRP). The research will assist with the assessment of water balances in mining and hydrometallurgical processes and ongoing probabilistic modelling for Newmont Mining Corporation, its wholly owned gold mines, and its joint venture operation of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM). Kalgold or KCGM are the managers of a joint venture project between Barrick Australia (50 per cent) and Newmont Mining Corporation (50 per cent) at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia (WA). Boddington Gold Mine (BGM), Western Australia, will commence operations this year and manage the new goldmine expansion project. BGM is 100 per cent Newmont owned and will operate to continue mining gold and copper from the existing (BGM) site that was decommissioned in 2001.

Our intention with this article is to illustrate a possible way forward for the mining industry to form such workplaces. We discuss different aspects of an attractive workplace and summarise our findings in a specification of basic demands dealing with safety, physical and psycho-social work environments and social responsibilities.

In most network connected technical installations and machines however, network security is not taken into account to a significant extent: insecure protocols are run, unencrypted information is exchanged freely and even broadcasted wirelessly and networked machines are accessible via insecure file transfer protocol (FTP).What happens in case of malfunctions of such technical installations? Who is responsible? Who can be held liable in case of accidents? The first computer worm for automation systems (æSTUXNETÆ) (Symantec, 2010) was discovered during 2010.The paper is intended to create sensitivity among decision makers for potential security and resulting safety leaks and points out the current status quo in technical network security. It outlines best practices for secure networking and procedures for remote access and remote software updates on stationary equipment and mobile mining machinery. It describes how to ensure authentic and genuine configurations and software targets and how to ensure secure communication for autonomous and remote controlled equipment. For such equipment in particular, the following statement should apply: æThere is no safety without network securityÆ.

The concept of æsustainabilityÆ can largely be defined as development that will not compromise the ælivabilityÆ of the planet for future generations. It has multiple dimensions, such as the triple bottom line û environmental, economic and social. And it also includes temporal (now and the future) and spatial (local and global) aspects that have to be taken into consideration to achieve true sustainability.Energy sustainability might be defined as û having the light turn on when you push the switch. It has, of course many more dimensions than this simplistic definition. Coal in Australia has an important role in keeping our lights on, but has its problems that need to be tackled head on to maintain a role in sustainable development.An overriding issue in terms of sustainability for coal is its major contribution to our greenhouse gas emissions. Whilst we have one of the most effective energy sectors in the developed world, based on well-managed, abundant fossil fuels, our greenhouse gas emissions are one of the highest per GDP in the developed world. We have to reduce our ægreenhouse gas signatureÆ.This paper explores the issues of coal utilisation greenhouse gas emissions as an indicator of the fuelÆs sustainability and the potential lower emissions pathways we will have to follow in a future carbon-constrained world.The technology changes will have significant implications for the minerals industry and it is argued that forward-looking coal/greenhouse emissions strategies need to be developed in alliance with the coal (and energy) sector for the minerals industry to maintain its global competitiveness.

Questionnaires were sent to 12 underground metalliferous mines in Queensland to enquire how these mines control diesel emissions from mobile diesel engines used underground. Where responses or controls were absent, discussion has been provided. A significant finding concerns secondary ventilation design rates. Some mines were designing ventilation rates to meet the superseded Mines Regulation Act of 1989 which required 0.04 m3/s/kW. The current Queensland Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Regulation (2001) is risk based. In line with other jurisdictions, including New South Wales (NSW) and most Provinces in Canada, a minimum ventilation rate of 0.06 m3/s/kW is acceptable. However, this design ventilation rate will vary in practice depending on the diesel engines and controls. Dedicated ventilation engineers and technicians should be appointed to evaluate the effectiveness of the ventilation system. Personal exposure monitoring is required to confirm that exposure standards are not being exceeded. The primary control practice should be to reduce the emission at source. This can be ensured by purchasing low emission (Tier 2, Tier 3) equipment. In addition, the use of ultra low sulfur fuel (et al, 2002). Diesel fuel with a low aromatic content such as Eromanga diesel fuel will also mean employees are exposed to lower levels of poly-cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. These controls should be carried out in parallel with good maintenance practices. Preventative maintenance should be programmed and emissions be routinely tested, including both gaseous and particulate pollutants and compared against defined criteria. According to McGinn, 2002, there are a number of fundamental tools necessary to carry out preventative maintenance. These are outlined in maintenance guidelines and best practices for diesel engines in underground mining produced for the Diesel Emissions Evaluation Program (DEEP). An effective diesel emission management system needs to be fully integrated within the Safety and Health Management System. These requirements are further discussed in this paper.

The demand for iron-ore is ever increasing with the industry directly employing 60 500 people in a range of highly skilled roles in Australia. In the year 2019, the global iron-ore production was 2.85 billion tonnes. It is estimated that each tonne of beneficiated iron ore produces 400 kg of tailings. The IOTs are fine, dense and stable crystalline material mainly composed of iron oxides, alumina and silica. The current and most applied method of iron-ore tailings (IOTs) disposal is using subaqueous disposal of tailings in dams. The footprint generated by a tailings dam is massive and requires constant monitoring due to the possibility of a failure making the operation and maintenance of tailings dam extremely expensive. This review briefly discusses the known causes of tailings dam failures, their impact to the environment and day-to-day human life and potential applications of IOTs. The increase in water content enhances the pressure on dam walls. This in turn increases the liquefaction potential of the tailings and reduces the overall strength of the dam making it more vulnerable to failure. Potential applications of IOTs are in paints, aggregates in construction materials and bricks. The reuse of IOTs reduce waste and generates further revenue facilitating a path towards a sustainable future for the industry.

"Methane is a signifi cant greenhouse gas. Methane is released from coal seams during the mining process, both in surface and underground operations. This uncontrolled release is termed æfugitive emissionsÆ and in underground mines is transferred to the atmosphere in ventilation air, known as ventilation air methane (VAM). The global VAM emissions are over 369 Mt of CO2-e/a (Butler, 2011; US EPA, 2010). Coal mines may abate this VAM or consider abatement should there be a price on carbon. These fugitive emissions are heading towards ten per cent of AustraliaÆs emissions by 2020 (Department of Climate Change, 2011).There are safety issues involved in VAM destruction. Due to the nature of coal, and coalextraction, unpredicted methane spikes above the lower-explosive-limit (LEL) can occur in theventilation air; for example outburst events or ventilation failure. This could lead to a mine fi re ifthe mine ventilation air was connected to a VAM abatement plant and the risks are left unmitigated.CorkyÆs is working with the mining industry to directly address these safety issues. CorkyÆs calltheir technology VAM RAB, which stands for ventilation air methane regenerative afterburner(VAM RAB). VAM RAB utilises the principles of a thermal oxidiser.This paper discusses fi ve independent layers of protection (ILPs) to fi rst stop methane reachingthe thermal oxidiser and secondly prevent the fl ame front from burning away from the VAMRAB. The test work completed or contemplated includes safety integrity level (SIL) assignmentto various vents, barriers and door systems to prevent a fl ammable mixture reaching the VAMRAB, proven rapid response methane monitoring sourced from the petrochemical industry, anddefl agration experiments to test the eff ectiveness of the passive geometry and active engineeringcontrols. These experiments and SIL assessments indicate that it is possible to safely connect theVAM RAB to a working coal mine.Further work is required to upscale the pilot safety work. Refi nement to the design is possible;for example improvement to safety duct controls once trialled at demonstration scale plus thermalenergy capture for power generation or other applications to provide heat. Nevertheless, thispaper shows how safety issues can be managed by a multilayer of protection approach usingvents, barriers and doors, and appropriate thermal oxidiser geometry."

In the last 50 years there have been tremendous improvements in equipment used in development on underground mines. Compressed air powered jacklegs have been replaced by high powered electro-hydraulic drifters on sophisticated drill jumbos and load haul dump units have taken over from small shovels and rail cars.Despite the increase in power applied in key parts of the development cycle, average advance rates have fallen and costs have increased. The factor that is most often regarded as the main contributor to slowing advance rates is increased support requirements. Whilst there is no denying that the drive to improve safety has resulted in the requirement for more bolting and the installation of a skin support (mesh or shotcrete), this is not the only factor.Within the industry as a whole, many of the basic principles of development appear to have been lost over time. This paper looks at a historical case study and discusses some of the features of old development cycles that are no longer in use. This highlights some of the basics that appear to have been forgotten. These may be indicators to what may provide improvements in the conventional drill and blast development cycle.CITATION:Ross, I T, 2014.
