The eastern coal-field of Kentucky covers about 11,000 square miles of territory. On the east and south it extends to the State lines of West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee. Its western boundary may be roughly described as an irregular line beginning at the Ohio river, in Greenup county, thence through the counties of Carter, Menifee, Wolfe, Estill, Jackson, Rockcastle, Pulaski and Wayne, to the Tennessee line. The use of pellets in North American blast furnaces has made the mixes used in the associated sinter plants unique. These mixes generally contain a high percentage of fine waste oxide materials as the principal iron bearing portion of the mix, with iron ores and concentrates added in minor amounts only. Additionally, the sinter basicity is always above one and can be three or higher. This paper will discuss the large body of knowledge and experience developed by one company on this type of sinter mix. Results of laboratory tests will be used to illustrate how mix composition and feed preparation affect sinter productivity and quality.

IN the USSR considerable technical improvements have been made in hydraulic methods of mining coal. In New Zealand coal mining by these methods is still comparatively crude. The Russian techniques are closely studied in New Zealand, and this description is based mainly on translations of technical articles. Fundamentally the methods in both countries are the same-chief developments in the USSR are the use of high pressure water jets, capable of winning all but the hardest coal without prior blasting, and hydraulic pipeline transportation where the gradient is unsuitable for flume transport.

FOREWOHD-Americans have been able to create wealth from the nation's natural resources to an extent unprecedented in recorded history, thanks largely to the existence of a free market and of a rational body of laws. The General Mining Law of 1872, for instance, by establishing the rules of the game, was quite effective in channeling the ability of Americans to discover and develop mineral deposits. Another example was the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920 which made available the more easily discovered mineral deposits by spelling out the conditions and rules under which miners could obtain leases on federal lands.

At Kidd Creek, the annual production of 4.5 million tonnes of ore has been achieved primarily with sublevel blasthole stoping. This mining method has allowed underground operations to meet the designed production capacity while maintaining an outstanding safety record. To achieve this goal, rock mechanics principles have been integrated into each facet of mining in the planning stage, in the production stage, and in various stages of ground support. This paper evaluates the two adopted mining sequences based on ground stress patterns, blasting control, ground reinforcement, backfill support, and numerical modelling for stope stability at the mines.

This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the rate of uranium and molybdenum extraction from a flow reactor. Specific variables tested are fluid throughput and flow rate, lixiviant cation, and injected pH and carbonate concentration. The ore tested was from the Felder mine in southern Texas. It contained substantial quantities of marcasite and molybdenum disulfide that competed with the uranium ore for oxidant. Flow studies showed the oxidation of molybdenum disulfide under field conditions is mass transfer controlled, whereas the uranium oxidation is limited by surface reaction rate. The rate of uranium oxidation decreased with decreasing pH. The total carbonate levels, on the other hand, were unimportant. Ammonium carbonate appears to greatly decrease, if not completely halt, the reaction of marcasite with the oxygen. This effect was not found using either sodium or potassium carbonate.

All pilot and commercial plants working with Mesabi Range taconite employ wet magnetic separation. Progress is being made with a dry magnetic process,9-11 but this has not yet been applied to taconite except in the laboratory and pilot plants. Flowsheets in all five plants are similar, including multiple stages of grinding, each followed by magnetic separation, which rejects a finished tailing. The flowsheet in Fig. 1 is used in the preliminary and commercial plants of the Erie and Reserve mining companies and in Unit C of Oliver's Pilotac plant. At Erie the desliming operation is omitted. In the Reserve plants two ball mills are used with each rod mill. Pilotac uses flowsheet 2 in Unit A-B and has also tested flowsheet 3. Principal differences in the three flowsheets are the number of grinding stages and the type of roughing. The terms open- circuit roughing and closed-circuit roughing are best defined by the diagrams.
