PRODUCTION of sound bronze castings is a matter of great practical interest to users and manufacturers of high-grade non-ferrous engineering specialties. Although there has been much excellent research in this field, there still remains some confusion regarding the fundamental principles underlying production of really sound bronze. The literature of the past 20 years on this subject indicates that the prevailing opinion of metallurgists and foundrymen has been that unsoundness in bronze is due generally to oxidation. Several years ago the writer was connected with the Mint and Assay Service of the Federal Government as Assistant Assayer at the Salt Lake Assay Office. At that time cyanide bars formed approximately half of the bullion purchased by that office. Disagreement in valuat,ion between the producer and the office was not infrequent and to a lesser extent between the Assay Office and the Mint, this latter issue being soon obviated, however, by adopting uniform methods of sampling the bars. A nice problem seemed to offer itself for research and the writer began a series of experiments which were soon terminated, however, by his going into other work, and which he regrets have not since been completed. The results attained may suggest lines of approach to this problem and are, therefore, offered in this article. Frederic P. Dewey, Assayer of the Mint Scrvice, U. 5. Treasury, has had abundant opportunity to study this phase of metallurgy, and has published several articles relative thereto.1 In the last article cited Dewey quotes analyses of cyanide bullion similar in content to that with which the writer worked, and which show some of the variations met with. In the discussion of these papers,2 comparison has been made in terms of copper bullion, but to the writer this seems of questionable value. Copper bullion may resemble silver bullion, but its similarity to gold bullion with little or no silver content is another thing. The freezing-point diagram of Roozeboom, reproduced on page 881 of the discussion cited, is for the gold-silver series as stated. The solubilily of lead in PbS as a funclion of lemperature has been investigated by means of Hall coej'icient (RH) measurentents OIL samples prepared by annealing and quenching Bridgman-grourz single crystals, which contain excess lead incorporated during /heir growth from the mell. For sufficiently long annealing times and sufficiently rapid quench rules, the samples obtained consist of n-lybe PbS snturated with In the semiconducting compounds PbS, PbSe, and PbTe, the point defects associated with the presence of lead in excess of the stoichio metric composition are shallow donors. The defects associated with the presence of excess nonmetal are shallow acceptors. lead at the annealing teuiperatiire, together luilh a dispersed second phase of lead microprecipitates. Due to the retrograde solubility of lead, the measured free carrier concentration (n = l/eR77) decreases with decreasing annealing tewperature (T) from- 2.4 X 10 em-3 for 1l85OK to 1.3 X 1018 cm-3 for 623°K. The dala are well-represented by the equation n =(1.08 x 102) exp[ - (0.37 ev.)/kT] cm-3 For most undoped samples of these compounds, the carrier concentration at room temperature and below is determined primarily by the stoichiometry, since the concentration of either excess lead or excess non-metal is large compared to the concentrations of intrinsic carriers and electrically active impurities. Therefore the dependence of composition in temperature and partial pressure can be investigated by means of Hall coefficient measurements, even though the deviations from stoichiometry do not exceed 0.03 at. It is well known that iron markedly improves the physical properties and casting characteristics of aluminum bronzes. The use of 1 to 4 per cent iron as the principal modifying addition has become common practice in many foundries melting aluminum bronzes. Although the beneficial effects of iron are unquestioned, there is some uncertainty regarding the structural changes caused by it in the basic copper-aluminum system. It is agreed that a new constituent appears in abundance when the iron content reaches 2 to 4 per cent. This constituent, which frequently occurs in shapes resembling clover leaves, is sometimes assumed to be an aluminum-iron intermetallic compound. If this were correct we might expect a change in the structural relationships of the matrix in the direction of decreased aluminum content. On the other hand, it has been reported that iron has a negligible effect in altering the fundamental relationships of copper-aluminum alloys1 Others2'3 have reported an additive coefficient. Apparently it will be necessary to know the equilibrium relationships between the phases of the copper-aluminum-iron alloy system to establish any such theory as fact. When this has been done it may very well be that a further revision in the structural relationships may be necessary to describe the changes to be expected in commercial cast alloys. It was with this latter problem before them that the authors attempted to determine the change in the copper-aluminum relations with respect to iron. The electrical conductance of molten FeS was studied as a function of temperature and composition. It was found that stoi-chiometric FeS (36.5 pct S) shows a minimum specific conductance of 400 ohm-1 cm-1. For the Fe-rich melts the conductivity increases with increasing amount of iron to about 4850 ohm-1' cm-I at 26 pct sulfur. For the sulfur-rich melts the conductivity increases with increasing amount of sulfur until it reaches a maximum of 1300 ohm1 cm-1 for 37.4 pct S and decreases to 800 ohm-1 cm-1 for 38.3 pct sulfur. It is concluded that molten stoichiometric FeS is an intrinsic semiconductor in which the forbidden gap in the electron energy level diagram is quite narrow. Excess sulfur acts as an acceptor impurity in providing a component of positive hole conduction, while excess iron acts as a donor impurity to increase the n-type conduction. K. Bornemann and G. von Ftauschenplatl used a four-terminal, direct-current cell to study the electrical conductance of molten copper sulfide. Their measurements showed a high conductivity, of the order of 100 ohm-1 cm-" and a positive temperature coefficient. From electrolysis studies, Savelsberg2 concluded that molten Cu2S and molten FeS are electronic conductors. Further. he found that molten FeS has a high specific conductance, of the order of 1500 ohm-' cm-', and a small negative temperature coefficient. Pound, Derge, and Osuch,3 using an ac Kelvin circuit and a four-terminal cell, measured the specific conductance of molten Cu,S, molten FeS, and various mixtures. They found that the specific conductance of the solutions followed a roughly additive rule of mixtures. Yang, Pound, and Derge4 showed from electrolysis measurements that the mechanism of electrical conduction in molten Cu2S, FeS, and mattes is primarily electronic. Further, they observed that small additions of CuCl suppress the electronic conduction whereupon the system behaves ionically.

In tank-lixiviation, the extraction of the silver from chloridized ore by solutions of hyposulphite salts is performed by filtration. The ore-particles are kept stationary, while the solvent moves down through the mass of ore. The quickness of extraction, other conditions alike, is in direct proportion to the rapidity of the movement of the solvent through the ore. The solution, if left in contact with the ore without moving, displays but very little solving energy. If the filtration is interrupted for ten or twelve hours, and thus solution and ore are left in complete contact for that length of time, it mill be found that, when filtration is started again, the outflowing solution is but very little more saturated with silver than it was at the time of interruption, and that the ten or twelve hours were almost a perfect loss in the total time of extraction. Notwithstanding the long contact, the solution had not become saturated with silver chloride to its full solving capacity. A rapid movement of the solvent through the ore is essential to a quick extraction. This fact is well known ; and the endeavor of leachers has been to hasten extraction by increasing the rate of filtration. Siphons, vacuumpumps and other devices have been used with more or less success; but none of them have given full satisfaction. I have found that, if chloridized ore is brought into rapid contact with a proper volume of moving sodium hyposulphite solution, the silver chloride contained in the ore dissolves almost instantly, and that it is rather the volume of the solvent than its concentrated state which produces this effect. Such favorable conditions cannot be attained in tanks. The rapidity with which a certain volume of the solvent can be brought into contact with the ore-particles is limited by the speed with which the solution descends through the ore; and thus the leaching-time in tanks cannot be shortened beyond the limit set by the filteringcapacity of the ore. Internal improvements are the great seals; stamping upon the history of nations their epochs of peace, in which notable enterprises are conceived, and fresh impulses given along the path of progress. Such forerunners of national benefits have never been so notable in Mexico as in the last four decades of the nineteenth century, during which the national faith in the consolidation of peace has been a guaranty of the development of all the elements of national prosperity. Among all the improvements which have been realized with the unanimous approbation of the people, the railroads occupy a preferred place, for upon them depends the expansion of commerce, of agriculture and of mining, the three great factors of the wealth of Mexico. In a country so extensive as the Mexican Republic, where the inhabitants are greatly scattered, and great distances separate the producer from the consumer, the only way to encourage home industry, and the development of commerce, agriculture and mining, is to construct railroads, which shorten distance, facilitate transportation and minimize its costs. 1. INTRODUCTION The Bond method(1.2) for sizing tumbling ball mills has been used successfully for many years. The primary purpose of the Bond calculation is to predict the mill size and mill power to give a desired capacity (Q tph) from a wet overflow ball mill in normal closed circuit operated with a circulation ratio of 2.5. The input to the calculation is the make-up feed size characterized by the 80%-passing size in micrometers (xG), the desired circuit product size characterized by the 80%-passing size (xQ), and an empirical grindability number (the standard Bond Work Index) determined by a standard test. A series of empirical correcting factors(2) are used to convert the results to open-circuit or dry grinding in grate discharge mills. The Bond method has two major engineering advantages: (i) it is very simple; (ii) experience has shown that it works for many circumstances, as a reasonable approximation, because it is based on direct conversion of test data to results measured on industrial mills. There are four main disadvantages of the Bond method. First, there will be a range of error for any specific mill and material and set of operating conditions because the method does not explicitly include several variables which are obviously important: (i) recycle ratio and classifier efficiency (ii) mixture of ball sizes in the mill (iii) variations of residence time distributions with mill geometry and slurry density (iv) lifter design (v) slurry rheology (vi) different underfilling or overfilling of the mill as flow rate is changed. Second, the Bond method explicitly assumes that specific grinding energy E is not a function of ball load, whereas industrial practice and laboratory tests(3) show that the specific grinding energy (to go from a specified feed to a specified product) is less for lower ball loadings than the ball loading for maximum mill capacity. Third, the method uses only the 80% passing size of circuit feed and product to characterize the size distributions, whereas mill capacity in general must depend on the shape of the feed size distribution and the product size distribution. INTEREST in developing White Pine, considered since 1942, was renewed by the Korean conflict and its shortage of domestic sources of copper. In view of this Morris F. La Croix, president of Copper Range Co. of Boston, and of its wholly owned subsidiary, White Pine Copper Co., worked an agreement out with Government officials. Essentially the contract called for a construction loan of $57,185,000 at 5 pct interest, with $13 million additional supplied by Copper Range. Defense Materials Procurement Agency contracted for 243,750 tons of copper from the first 275,000 tons produced, at a base price of 25.5& per lb, the contract to expire Dec. 31, 1961.

DATA pertaining to pipe line flow for both oil and gas in horizontal or nearly horizontal pipe lines are both extensive and accurate. However, the pipe formulas used to determine pressure drop for flowing fluids (liquids and gases) under conditions of horizontal flow are not generally applicable to flowing oil and/or gas wells. Except for some data developed in small laboratory set-ups, little or no information was available concerning flow of oil and gas mixtures in vertical pipes, when, in 1928, the writer began the development of a method for computing pressure drops in the pipes of flowing oil wells, as outlined in this paper. In 1929, Uren1 presented some findings based on laboratory experi-ments in which vertical flow of an extremely heavy crude oil was induced, by means of air through a 2-in. pipe, 41 ft. long. The friction factors derived from the experiment, as well as values for pressure drop per 100 ft., are not believed satisfactory in their application to flow problems in the field. Versluys,2 also in 1929, presented a mathematical development of the theory of flowing oil wells, and in 1930, gave a companion paper3 setting forth some principles governing the choice of length and diameter of tubing in oil wells. Since the termination of the study presented in this paper, another. valuable contribution pertaining to the problem, of vertical flow was made by Moore and Wilde.4 Although there were writings dealing with the principles of the gas-lift, a search of the available literature indicated that specific information on vertical flow was lacking with the exception of the writings of Uren, Versluys, and Moore and Wilde, to which reference .has been made.

Relationships between the compositions of specially prepared manganin-type alloys and some of their electrical properties have been established. Empirical equations, based upon the electronic configurations of the alloying elements, are given which describe the resistivity, temperature coefficient, peak temperature, and thermoelectric power of Cu-Mn-Ni-Fe alloys at approximately room temperature. Calculations based upon these relationships are correlated with experimental data. SECURING suitable alloys for the construction of stable resistors, for use in precise electrical measuring devices, has been important ever since the art of electrical measurement was begun. German silver, Pt-Ag, and Platinoid are examples of some of the alloys in early use. These early alloys were un- satisfactory for one or more of the following reasons: l—insufficient stability of electrical properties with time, 2—poor reproducibility of electrical characteristics from melt to melt, 3—excessive temperature coefficients of resistance, and 4—excessive cost. Weston introduced the Cu-Mn-Fe and Cu-Mn-Ni-Fe alloys of the type now generally known as manganins. His patents are believed to represent the first disclosure of any alloy with a negative temperature coefficient of resistance. The objective of this study has been to develop a method of log interpretation in the Delaware sand whereby the effects of the shale contained within the sand can be recognized and accounted for in a quantitative solution for porosity and water saturation. Both theoretical and empirical considerations are discussed. A simplified interpretation chart is presented which provides a means of amending the conventional porosity resolution of the Sonic log to compensate for the presence of shale. The amount of shale within the sand and its degree of lamination may be inferred from a calibrated gamma ray log. The resulting porosity value may then be used in conjunction with a knowledge of the formation resistivity to determine water saturation. Of added interest, particularly in the Delaware sand, is an approximation of permeability which may be derived empirically from the simplified chart. The discussion is illustrated by field examples. INTRODUCTION The performance of the Sonic log in defining the porosity fraction in clean, consolidated formations is well known, particularly in sandstones that are well compacted and free of shale. An approach to Sonic log porosity determination in shaly sands has been recently developed.' This method involves correcting the Sonic log readings by means of an a factor, where a is the ratio of the pseudo-static SP to, the static SP, and is a function of the amount of shale present. This method is dependent upon a contrast between the salinities of the drilling fluid and the connate water in the formation, inasmuch as this contrast produces the SP effect. In wells drilled with salt mud, the contrast, and with it the means of obtaining the a correction, disappear. In the Delaware basin, the large majority of rotary wells drilled to the uppermost sands of the Bell Canyon group employ salt mud as the drilling fluid. These sands have been the objective of most of the drilling exploration in the basin to date. A comparison of porosity values in these sands, as determined by core analysis, to Sonic log readings has indicated that a correction for the shaliness of the sand is needed. In the absence of an SP curve to determine the correction factor, the porosity resolution of the Sonic log in these sands has been questionable.

Since their comparatively recent development, the alloys of cadmium with silver and copper or nickel, and of cadmium with nickel alone, have been used somewhat extensively as liners for connecting rod bearings and main bearings of internal-combustion engines. In applications where, owing to high bearing loads and elevated operating temperatures, the life of bearings made from tin-base or lead-base alloys has been undesirably short, cadmium alloys have demonstrated considerable advantage. In applications where, because of deflection of the crankshaft or bearing supports, copper-lead bearing metals have resulted in scored shafts, cadmium alloys have been operated successfully. The somewhat serious drawback to these alloys in bearing service has been that they, in common with copper-lead and certain lead alloys, are susceptible to corrosion in the presence of lubricants containing organic acids. These acids may be fatty acids (such as oleic acid) derived from animal or vegetable oils that sometimes have been compounded with engine lubricants, or they may be compounds of an acid nature developed by the oxidation of some petroleum oils under operating conditions. The result of such acid attack on bearings is illustrated by the photograph, Fig. 1. The petroleum oils that are most readily oxidized to a corrosive condition, and the operating conditions under which such oxidation most readily occurs, are now rather well known among the technical organizations of both the petroleum and automotive industries. While means have been developed for inhibiting petroleum oils against such acid formation, the knowledge that this condition may be encountered has been a factor in restricting the wider use of cadmium alloys as engine bearings. It has appeared, therefore, that their value and use would be enhanced if they could be made corrosion-resistant to a degree compatible with the most severe operating requirements. In some districts of the bituminous coal field the problem of constructing bulkheads to seal off water under pressure is becoming increasingly important. Recently this matter has been brought very much to the front by the loss of a large Illinois mine due to failure of a bulkhead that separated it from several old, flooded mines. As this great misfortune has provoked much inquiry about proper bulkhead design, it is felt that a description of the successful and extensive water-sealing practice at three mines that have different natural conditions will be of considerable interest to those connected with properties having a present or future water problem and to engineers that may have to design safe bulkheads of economical construction. These three mines are the Saxton and Dresser, near Terre Haute, Ind., and the Hegeler, near Danville, Ill. All three have water conditions that make it necessary to regularly seal off all worked-out sections of the mine, and there are considerably over a hundred bulkheads in each. AS far as the writers know, these three mines are the only ones in the bituminous coal fields of the United States with anything like so large a number of water seals and experience, although a number of other mines are known to have a few bulkheads. More detail will be included herein on the Saxton mine than on the others, as the writers are more familiar with it. General Mining System All three of the mines use the same general panel room-and-pillar system, which consists of rooms turned both ways off room entries and a solid block of coal left on all sides of the completed panel except on the cross-entry side, where a heavier pillar is pierced by two entries for haulage and air. On completion of the panel the two entries arc sealed and the panel is then isolated from the rest of the mine. Owing to water conditions, no pillars are pulled; recovery inside the panel barrier pillars is approximately 65 per cent.

Movement on a fracture of irregular shape can cause local widening of the fissure and thereby offer freer channelways for circulation of ore-depositing solutions. This influence: coupled with large areas of wall rock available for reacting with ore solutions in brecciated and shattered ground can account for locally active deposition of metals and the resulting ore shoots. Such irregularities in the fracture system may be caused by local variations in the strength of rocks and by pre-existing lines of weakness, especially if these stand at favorable angles to certain components of the fracturing stress. Therefore correct interpretation of the mechanics of fracturing should permit deductions as to structurally favorable places on unexplored portions of the vein system. Introduction It has long been recognized that movement on a curved or irregular fault surface is capable of separating the walls in certain portions of the fault, but until very recent years the importance of this mechanism as a factor in localizing ore shoots has escaped proper recognition. A short time ago W. H. Newhouse' presented a careful analytical study of displacements and their corresponding open spaces. For reasons that will be discussed later, it frequently happens that portions of the vein which are favorably oriented are not merely wider but also richer than the average. In many cases the widening with its accompanying richness coincides with very minor changes in the dip or strike of the vein, irregularities that commonly escape notice unless the vein is mapped in detail and a careful geometrical analysis made. While the relationship between the width of the vein and the changes in dip or strike has been recognized as a matter of observation, the irregularities have been accepted as more or less the result of accident. There has been very little effort except in isolated cases to find out the causes of these changes in dip or strike. Yet it is clear that if the causes can be recognized and expressed in terms of geologic structure the geologist will know where to look for repetitions of these favorable conditions either on extensions of the same vein or on adjoining veins. Any lack of understanding of the causes is due to the limitations of our ability to interpret our observations and not to the sheer capriciousness of

Last year's review was characterized as a year of politics and began an era of legislation. The 1972 review can be similarly characterized, with even more rigid health and safety regulations and environmental legislation. The mining industry should be aware of what's happening in the nuclear power and other fields as a result of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969, where the environmental impact of most major construction activities are already under close scrutiny. Section 102 of NEPA requires that all federal agencies include a detailed statement on specified environmental conditions as part of every report on proposed actions significantly affecting the quality of the human environment. All such environmental reports must consider the same general conditions: • The environmental impact of the proposed action. • Any adverse environmental effects which cannot be avoided should the proposal be implemented. • Alternatives to the proposed action. • The relationship between local short-term uses of man's environment and the maintenance and enhancement of long-term productivity. • Any irreversible and irretrievable commitments of resources which would be involved in the proposed action should it be implemented.
