I 2] STEPHEN ROYCE, * Crystal Falls, Mich.Having examined and reported upon the Steep Rock Lake property and vicinity on several occasions for clients, and having kept in touch with the operation from 1938 on, the writer offers the following discussion of the valuable paper by Messrs. Roberts and Bartley, which was so kindly prepared in response to the writer's earnest request, made as a member of the Committee on Mining Geology. ORIGIN OF THE ORES The writer wishes to express complete agreement with the authors that the origin of these deposits was replacement action by hot ascending sulphide solutions of igneous origin, gaining access via the limestone and dolomite breccia channels, and acting mainly to replace the dolomite and limestone breccia with hematite and hydrated hematite. Some replacement in adjoining greenstones and tuffs by the same solutions may also have taken place, but the latter occurrences may represent replaced iron formations originally bedded in with the volcanics. Iron formation in the same relationship to volcanics is extensively developed on the western Menominee Range of Michigan, in the Middle Huronian belts; also appears in similar relations on the Vermilion Range; and is abundantly exposed in the same stratigraphic position no farther away than the southeast arm of Steep Rock Lake itself. Furthermore, the writer's classification of drill cores, made June 11, 1938, on the prop¬erty, contains the following, for hole 8, in the original strike of the A ore body: "332-342 ore; 342-350 much-leached sugary chert with thin ferruginous slate bands." This is a typical iron formation. The ore in this first group of holes (Numbers 6 to 13, incl.) is described in the writer's 1938 notes as follows: "The ore is hard, massive hematite with some limonite, and shot through with many small vugs." The breccia forms in the float ore and in the drill samples were also noted. As a field classification this does not check badly with Professor Schwartz's microscopic work. Notes supplied by Mr. Neeland, then geologist at the exploration, show: "Hole 23 has some iron formation, not logged yet." It appears therefore that there is some iron formation at the exploration, much iron formation in similar stratigraphic position in the vicinity, and iron formation similarly located as to volcanics on the Vermilion and western Menominee Ranges. Certain of the holes, notably Holes 25 and 27, showed some specular hematites resembling those known to be formed from cherty iron formation elsewhere. Hence the writer concludes that at least a small part of the Steep Rock ores results from replacement of iron formation. By far the greater part of it is, as the authors say, clearly a replaced limestone and dolomite breccia, with the breccia outlines still preserved in much of the ore, and all of the replacement is by hot ascending waters. BLANDFORD. C. BURGESS, the new Chairman of the Industrial Minerals Division, took the advice of Horace Greeley in reverse-he turned his hack on San Francisco and the Golden Gate, and after a few side excursions toward Alaska and Arizona, hit the trail eastward, not for the lonesome pine, but for Spruce Pine, N. C. Born Aug. 10, 1893, in San Francisco. Burgess found his first job, shortly after finishing high school at 19, as axeman for a surveying party of engineers working for the Southern Pacific Co. in Oregon. Later he moved on up with them into Alaska. He liked the engineering profession, and decided to equip himself further so he entered the University of California in the fall of 1913. and for the next two years devoted himself to acquiring an education in civil engineering.

WHEN a local man has attained high position in business and civic affairs at home, his fellow citizens feel elated if his attainments are given recognition in the form of election to office in an organization of national scope. Eugene Ainsworth White, a new Director of the Institute, is one of the must prominent citizens of Tacoma, where for the past thirteen years he has managed the Tacoma Smelter of the American Smelting and Refining Co. A list of the civic duties he has carried with distinction would be a long one; for recent years it would show that he has been chairman of the Community Chest, vice-president of the Chamber of Commerce. and a member of the Pierce County Taxation Bureau.

IT is a somewhat curious circumstance that the newest of the Institute's several awards should be conferred in the oldest of our several professional fields—for there is little question that geology and mining have antedated metallurgy and petroleum. Perhaps so did geophysics. After all, one geophysical instrument, the magnetic compass, has been successfully employed for many centuries. Young in years the Jackling Award may be, but in distinction—whether in terms of the title it bears or in terms of the first three medalists (Reno Sales, E. D. Gardner, and the late Father MaceIwane)—the Jackling Award is already one of the ranking awards of the Institute. The name of the 1957 medalist will bring added luster to an already illustrious roll. J. L. Gillson was born and brought up in Evan-ston, Ill., in an area characterized by singularly flat and uninspiring topography, and devoid of ore deposits and even of bedrock—a most unlikely environment from which to expect a future Jackling medalist to emerge! On graduating from high school he enrolled as a chemistry major at Northwestern University. At the end of his frkshman year his scholastic prowess had won him a prize of two chemistry books. But these went unread, for about this time he came under the spell of U. S. Grant, that distinguished and enthusiastic geologist who for many years was head of Northwestern's geology department. From thence forward Joe was a dedicated geologist. After a Navy interlude in World War I, he went to MIT for graduate work, substituted for the late Professor Palache for one year at Harvard in mineralogy, received his doctorate at MIT and stayed on as a meniber of the MIT faculty, where the geology department was headed by that great dean of all economic geologists, Waldemar Lindgren. In 1926 Joe spent a summer looking into barite deposits for the du Pont Co., and since 1928 he has been du Pont's chief geologist. Do men who lead such active lives in our exploration organizations generally have permission to publish their observations? Do they generally find time to publish, even if they have permission? Alas, no. But in Joe Gillson's case, yes. His bibliography runs to well over two score papers, including one of the very first papers in this country on the applications of petrography to problems of Portland cement. He has written on such topics as the origin of talc and the genesis of ilmenite, fluorspar, and alkaline rocks. Each year for a number of years his annual reviews of industrial minerals in the Mining Congress Journal have been eagerly awaited. - Do men who do so much to advance their science have anything left to give to the advancement of their profession? In Joe Gillson's case, yes. He has been a vice president of the Mineralogical Society of America and has been active in the councils of the Society of Economic Geology, particularly in their research programs. This year he is president of the American Geological Institute, currently perhaps the most challenging post to which a geologist may be elected. His contributions to AIME scarcely need documentation, so I shall mention only three—his chairmanship of the Committee on Democratization of the Institute, a committee whose work and recommendations brought a new and hopeful leaven to AIME at a time when this was sorely needed; his chairmanship, a few years ago, of the Industrial Minerals Division; and his current place on the Board of Directors as Vice President of the Institute. Such' a catalogue of contributions and achievement, even as condensed as I have had to make it, certainly merits the Jackling Award. Yet, implicit although not often expressed in the conferring of most awards is the hope that besides recognizing a distinguished career, it will provide stimulus for further effort. In the present instance, such an expectation is already well on the way to fulfillment. Only recently Joe Gillson has undertaken the editorship of a new and greatly revised edition of the Institute's Seeley Mudd volume, Industrial Minerals and Rocks. And so, Mr. Chairman, it is with pleasure and enthusiasm that I present Dr. J. L. Gillson for the 1957 Jackling Award.

DURING the happy and peaceful years between the Treaty of Versailles and the third New Deal, metallurgy became one of the most cosmopolitan of the sciences. Any metallurgist can name some twenty or thirty scientists whose work, in this country, in England, in Germany, or in France, Sweden, Italy, or Japan was as well known in other parts of the metal-producing and metal using world as it was locally, despite the fact that many of these men never left their native land. One of these metallurgical cosmopolites is Augustus Braun Kinzel, former Chairman of the Iron and Steel Division, A.I.M.E., and now a Director of the Institute. Gus Kinzel, however, is not only a cosmopolite by reputation; he is also a cosmopolite in fact. For many years he commuted at least twice a year between New York and the rest of the world; he is, therefore, not only an expert on the art and science of metallurgy but is equally expert in world travel and can expound with authority on the comparative quality and especially on the cuisine of the great prewar steamship lines; and being a true cosmopolite, he knows, as well as he knows the iron-chromium diagram, the best vintage years in the Gironde, Cote d'Or, and Saone-et-Loire departments in France and along the banks of the Moselle and Rhine in Germany.

FRIEND recently remarked that the career of Scott Turner is characterized by Work and Wild -A Ducks. To these might be added Accomplishment and Persistent Fishing. All of these elements are manifestations of his character. The diversions-hunting and fishing-are in the nature of the proverbial trolley conductor's holiday, for many of Turner's years have been spent in the outdoors, often in distant lands, as in Spitzbergen, where the ducks pictured below were bagged. The election of Scott Turner to the presidency of the Institute marks the culmination of a quarter century of membership, during the last two years of which he has been vice-president. He was born at Lansing, Mich., on July 31, 1880, and received his A.B. at the University of Michigan in 1902, with a B.S. and E.M. at the Michigan College of Mines in 1904. Since then he has been granted two honorary degrees, D.Sc. from the Colorado School of Mines, and D.Eng. from the University of Michigan, but he still prefers to be called "Scott" rather than "Doctor." Government service was not a new experience for Turner when he was appointed Director of the U. S. Bureau of Mines by Secretary Hoover in 1925, for his first employment after graduation was as Field Assistant in the U. S. Geological Survey in Oregon and Idaho. This was followed by work in Tombstone, Ariz.; then his first foreign engagement in 1905-6 as superintendent of the San Pablo Gold Mining Co. in Panama. Various field experiences followed, though there was an interlude in work of a kind that few mining engineers ever experience. This was in technical journalism, for in 1906 he was

MUCH study has been given by engineers in general, and investigators in particular, to the concentration of stress which occurs under load in structural members having irregularities in section such as notches, shoulders, key ways, tool marks, etc. The result of the effect of both fresh and salt water corrosion upon the endurance properties of various metals and alloys has been ably determined and the general laws underlying these phenomena carefully pointed out by McAdam. From a practical standpoint, 'however, it is after all the endurance value of corroded, non-symmetrical sections which is most pertinent. In the experiments about to be described rotating cantilever specimens of nickel steel of the 3.5 per cent nickel ' 0.35 per cent carbon type have been used. These were machined from bars l 1/8. in. dia. and 9% in. long and were heat-treated by quenching in oil from 825 deg. C. followed by reheating to 650' C. and oil quenching. One session of the annual meeting of the American Society of Civil Engineers-the first since this society became a Founder society with representation on the Board of the United Engineering Society-was held on Jan. 17, 1917, in the Engineering Societies' Building. Mr. Charles F. Rand, Past-President of this Institute, and President of the United Engineering Society, welcomed the new Founder society in the following words: "As one who has looked forward very earnestly to this clay, and who has made a modest effort in favor of the new arrangements, it is a peculiar satisfaction to be the representative of the Trustees of the United Engineering Society and to welcome you on the occasion of your first meeting in this building in which you now own' a quarter interest. "'As this is your annual meeting, I cannot take your time for extended remarks, yet it seems proper that I should call attention to a few facts respecting the United Engineering Society, with which you are now identified. "The United Engineering Society exists for the purpose of holding the legal title to certain of the property of the societies of Civil, Mining, Mechanical and Electrical Engineers and to act for them in certain matters. "The value of its property, including real estate, the Library and the Reserve and Endowment funds, exceeds two million dollars, all free and clear. "The total membership of the four Founder societies is 29,000 and the membership of associate societies is 23,000, making a grand total of 52,000 engineers who now have headquarters in this building.

DISCUSSION Judson S. Hubbard (The Humphreys Investment Co., Denver)—In this very interesting paper several brief references are made to the Humphreys spiral, a device used for cleaning fine coal. In Table I, Plants 76 and 77, data are given on spiral performance treating Raton and Trinidad coal. The fine coal, as fed to the spiral in these instances, is actually a table middling, hence the more easily treated material was previously removed and a large number of particles were present which were difficult to clean. Mr. W. M. Bertholf of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Co. presented a paper in February, 1946, Cleaning Table Middlings from a Coal Washery with the Humphreys Spiral Concentrator, from which I quote: "In considering the results of our tests it should be noted that the feed was our table middling, and that any real separation is a 'moral victory' as there is little material that could properly be called coal and practically no heavy rock, the consequences being that previous attempts to clean the middling have not at all been successful." Referring again to Table I, Plants 72, 73, 74, and 75, these data were obtained by Yancey and Geer and others and presented at the February 1950 Meeting, AIME, in a paper entitled Laboratory Performance Tests of the Humphreys Spiral as a Cleaner of Fine Coal. Results shown for those tests involve all particles from 8 mesh through the colloids, which admittedly is not an ideal situation for spiral feed if much refuse is contained in the —80 mesh or —100 mesh size range. As an illustration of the effect of treating too broad a size range, let us consider Plant No. 75, Kentucky No. 9 seam. Spiral feed was 8 mesh x 0. Now had this been 8x100 mesh the percentage of misplaced material would have been 8.0 pct instead of the reported 15.26 pct. Similar comparisons can be made on the other data presented with respect to the spiral. Other types of equipment show a similar trend in that whenever too fine a size is treated in a given unit process the percentage of misplaced material increases. Since the spiral is working near the finer end of the size range, it will sometimes be advantageous to treat the entire range of —8 mesh material rather than to deslime and make a fair showing on, say, the +80 or + I00 mesh. Desliming is subsequently done in any case in the dewatering or thickening operation. Results obtained by spiraling any given coal depend on factors too numerous and complex to discuss here, but there are strong indications that proper preparation of feed to the spiral can improve results obtained on some of the raw coals tested. This is clearly pointed out at the end of the aforementioned paper by Yancey and Geer. "The spiral is an extremely simple device which involves no moving parts and is constructed almost entirely of unmachined castings. Since it is such an uncomplicated mechanism, operation is simple and virtually foolproof. These characteristics, which go far toward insuring low cost operation, are attractive attributes in any coal cleaning unit." Certain equipment used in conjunction with the spiral has resulted in a decrease in the percentage of misplaced material, notably in actual practice the launder screen which is used to remove objectionable high ash fines from a spiral-washed coal product. Private correspondence with the U. S. Bureau of Mines has intimated that an additional yield of coal is possible by flotation of the spiral middling. Possible future improvements and developments may result from other methods now under consideration. Finally, some compromise must be made between the best metallurgical performance and the best practical or economical results. Mr. Lyons emphasizes in his summary this objective of overall economy in selection of equipment. G. B. Walker (American Cyanamid Co., Stamford, Conn.)—I had the pleasure of reviewing the draft of this paper and my curiosity was aroused by the data given for Tromp plants, in that all of the examples shown appeared to be 2-product separations, whereas all the Tromp plants with which I am familiar have been 3-product units. The data given for plants No. 101 and 102 appear to be taken from Tromp's brochure on his process and represent the results obtained at the Dominale plant in Holland which was operated for many years by Mr. Tromp. The plant, which was designed to treat 58 tons per hr, was sampled while treating 35 tons per hr of 3Y4x-in. coal. Example 101 appears to conform to what would result if the middling product were calculated into the refuse product, while Example 102 represents the calculation of the middling into the coal product. It is believed that Examples 103 and 104 represent the operation of the Willem-Sophie Mine in Holland recalculated on the same basis. In checking the English examples given by numbers 14, 15, 16, and 17, the same procedure seems to have been followed. These results have, apparently, been taken from an article in Colliery Engineering in August 1941, describing the initial operation of the Williamthorpe Colliery of the Hardwick Colliery Co. Two vessels are employed in this plant, one to treat soft coal and one to treat hard coal. Example No. 14 presents the results that could be obtained from the soft coal bath if the middling were calculated into the refuse, and Example 15 the results when the middling is calculated into the coal. Examples 16 and 17 represent the same expedient in the case of the hard coal bath. Of interest to this discussion is the fact that during the past year the Simon-Carves Engineering Co. in England has installed in the Williamthorpe plant their new "Sim-Car" medium cleaning system which is based on magnetic extraction and control and which is licensed under the Heavy-Media Separation Processes patents by the American Zinc, Lead and Smelting Co. This system has been described in the December 1951, issue of Colliery Engineering. It is reported that since the Williamthorpe Colliery was changed from the Tromp system of medium cleaning to the Magneto-Motive method of medium control the opera-

EDWIN LUDLOW, president of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers for the year beginning Feb. 15, 1921, is a well-known figure in the state that was the birthplace of the Institute-Pennsylvania-although he was born and educated in New York and is again one of its residents, after years of active work in the field. Mr. Ludlow was born at Oakdale, Long Island, and was graduated from the School of Mines at Columbia University with the class of 1879. After graduation, he became a civilian worker with the U. S. Engineer Corps under General William Ludlow, his brother, and for two years did river and harbor surveying along the New Jersey coast.

FOR some time it has been thought that there should be > closer relationship between the members' of the Institute engaged in education in the mining schools, the mining, metallurgical, ceramic, and geological departments of universities, and the members of the Institute actually engaged in the production of mineral products and the operation and direction of works. The American Society of Chemical Engineers and the American Ceramic Society have for some years past devoted especial attention to the educational matters of their respective fields. The Engineering Foundation, representing the great engineering societies of the country, is deeply interested in technical education and maintains a Committee on Educational Research.

INSTITUTE members attending the Annual Meeting in New York who want to see one of the mining engineers' newest aids, photoelastic stress analysis, are due for an interesting afternoon on Thursday, Feb. 15, when open house: will be held at the Columbia University mining laboratory. Information as to the direction and distribution off stresses in mine structures, which has been developed by Professor Bucky, associate professor at the Columbia School of Mines, and David Sinclair, research assistant, is useful in the design of pillars and in the placing of openings relative to working places such as gangways and haulage levels.: This work has been sponsored during the last ten years by the Engineering Foundation.. THERE have been two important accomplishments of the Truman administration; the Hoover Commission report on inefficiency and waste in government and the report of the Paley Commission on the natural resources of the United States. Both reports are in the interest of the American people and should transcend the boundaries of political parties. Both reports are starting points for the formulation of policies which must be continuously revised to meet changing conditions. Regardless of the outcome of the election the principles embodied in these two great documents must be kept alive. The Paley report is right in our own bailiwick of mineral raw materials and it behooves us to study it carefully as our responsibility to posterity. To those in the mining industry who have limited their field of observation to moving rock or to metal prices it may come as a surprise that our production of such staples as copper, lead, and zinc has fallen behind increased requirements to the point that substantial tonnages must be imported. Iron ore is next on the list and everybody knows that such metals as tin, tungsten, chromium, manganese, nickel, and cobalt are imported almost exclusively. The crisis in raw materials pointed up by the Paley report has been reported annually by Elmer Pehrson and others to small gatherings at the Mineral Economics Division sessions at the Annual Meeting for as long as we can remember. In September 1949, the United Nations Economic and Social Council held an international resource conference at Lake Success which disclosed these same grave conclusions: - Consumption of raw materials is multiplying at an alarming rate, faster than discoveries or replacements are being made. - Production has been wasteful and utilization lavishly beyond enginee¬ing and practical requirements. - Industrialized nations are depleted and many raw materials consumed by industry are not found in the industrialized countries. - Nations formerly exporters of raw materials are increasingly building their own consuming industries. - Political forces in the world are limiting access to raw materials. The Paley Commission selecting the quarter century, 1950 to 1975, to project raw material requirements for the United States, pointed out obstacles to meeting these requirements, and made recommendations for procurement. It is not important that we disagree that cobalt consumption will reach 344 pct of present, or fluorspar 187 pct when iron and ferroalloys are only expected to increase 75 pct. What is important it that the fabulous appetite of the United States for mineral raw materials has consumed more since World War I than was consumed by the entire world in all recorded history prior to 1914. And, unless the people of the United States are satisfied to remain at their present standard of living (which is unthinkable) this consumption is correctly plotted by the Paley Commission as continuing to expand. If the U. S. is to continue on a course of progress, it must procure raw materials wherever it can at the lowest possible cost. Natural resources are clearly an area in which the broadest cooperation between industry and government must exist to achieve efficient exploitation, economic consumption, and expansion of sources of supply. The message of the Paley report requires action comparable to that of the North Atlantic Pact. Its implication is as significant as military preparedness. It is a world problem. It is a mining engineering problem. Don't let it die!

SOMEWHAT biased by pride in twentieth century achievements, most of us mining engineers and diamond-drill operators look upon core drilling as a relatively modern practice. The invention of the diamond drill is generally ascribed to Rudolf Leschot, who made use of diamonds in 1846 in drilling blast holes in the Mont Cenis tunnel in Switzerland. In vain we search Agricola and other early writers on mining for signs of diamond drilling. We have, therefore, concluded that it was unknown until the middle of the last century. The trouble with this conclusion, as most prospectors will tell us, is that we "don't dig deep enough"; for it now appears that the archeologists have been putting one over on us for the last fifty years.

JUST as the mineralogical name bauxite has come to include several minerals not known at the time the name was first applied, so the concept of bauxite as the one source of alumina must be enlarged during the war period to include the production of alumina from other, low-grade sources. Speaking in a narrow mineral logical sense, there is no such thing as bauxite, and similarly there is now no one source of alumina, and no one process for its extraction.
