Discussion of the paper of P. A. BOECK, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 104, August, 1915, pp. 1539 to 1550. LAWRENCE ADDICKS, Douglas, Ariz.-It does not seem to me that the role played by carrying heat away from one surface to another has been brought out. A cellular construction prevents the motion of air currents. Also in the installation on the top of a reverberatory furnace, that Mr. Krieger mentions, where it stopped the cooling, there is besides the question of overheating. Another complex question, entirely apart from the necessity of not carrying a brick above a certain temperature, is that of not allowing acids and bases to come together at too high a temperature. J. W. BECKMAN.-What cements together the individual cells in the insulating material? Also, how does the material behave in the presence of acids and alkalies, both strong and weak? A. H. KRIEGER, New York, N. Y.-The material is formed or composed of myriads of lace-like skeleton remains of diatoms visible only -under a powerful microscope. The diatom lives in salt and fresh water. On the Pacific Coast there must have been an abundant life of the diatom, because the beds, still in existence in Southern California, are fully 1,000 ft. through, and are hard and strong, standing a pressure of more than 400 lb. per square inch. The beds must have been many ages in forming and the diatoms have become firmly packed together. The samples shown are typical of the entire deposit as it was formed at the bottom of the sea. During the course of preparation of crystals of alpha brass for an investigation of their creep characteristics, a number of critically oriented crystals were produced. In each of these specimens, Po, the specimen axis, lay near some important crystallographic direction or on or near the border of two possible slip systems. Because of the unusual nature of their orientations, it was considered of interest to deform these specimcns in simple tension and to study orientation changes and any unusual occurrences, different from what would be expected for specimens ill which only one slip system had distinctly the highest maximum resolved shear stress. Choice of actual operating slip system in a crystal offering an immediate possibility of two slip systems would be expected to be due to chance., defeet, or some inhomogeneity. Even in an ideally perfect crystal so oriented, the natural oscillations of the atoms about their lattice positions would give rise to a condition wherein one slip system would be farored over the other at the critical shear stress. In the large, nonperfeet crystals of the present investigation, slip on both systems, but in different portions of the specimen, might occasionally be expected. Determination of Orientation and Operating Slip System Orientations of specimens before and after deformation were determined by Greninger&apos;s back-reflection Laue method.&apos; Elam2 has shown that deformation of alpha brass crystals proeceds as with crystals of aluminum and of copper; that is, the slip plane is a {111) plane and the slip direction is a <110> direction. There are, however, four possible slip planes of {111) form and each plane has three possible slip directions, so that there is a, total of 12 possible slip systems in a face-centered cubic lattjce. The new potash refinery of Duval Sulphur & Potash Co. produced its first tonnage of muriate of potash in November 1951. Full capacity was attained in early 1952. Excellent extraction efficiency is being obtained by the process, which is basically froth flotation. System temperature control is practiced and has proved to be of great metallurgical value through high potassium recovery and. low reagent cost. WHEN Duval Sulphur and Potash Co. recently entered the established potash industry, the vast amount of pioneer work essential in an entirely new endeavor was unnecessary. Thus it was possible to screen and assemble proved techniques into a highly efficient process based on the combined knowledge of the industry. It is hoped that the refinements Duval has added to these cumulative achievements will contribute to the rapid advance of the potash industry and related enterprises. The process selected utilizes as raw material syl-vinite ore typical of the Permian Basin. This ore is principally comprised of interlocked crystals of potassium chloride, about 40 pct, and sodium chloride. Also there is as much as 1 1/2 pct of dispersed clay slime which, because of its nature, highly complicates beneficiation of these ores. The refining method is basically flotation in which the mineral sylvite is floated away from the halite-clay gangue to produce a 60 pct K,O muriate of potash product for the plant-food trade. During the seventeen years Fairchild has been making aerial surveys and aerial photographic equipment many changes and improvements have been made in the equipment and in the technique of using it. Aerial photographic operations have been developed from the crude methods and apparatus of wartime to a science upon which exact engineering calculations can be based. In the early days there was no airplane specially designed to meet aerial photographic requirements. One type of camera was used in all types of operations. Projects were made to conform to the products we could make and deliver. Obviously this entailed definite limitations. We now have airplanes designed specially for aerial photographic operations in accordance with the conditions encountered in actual service experience. We have cameras for every photographic purpose and our laboratory technique and equipment have been developed to the point where it is possible to make contour maps from vertical aerial photographs with contour intervals as close as five feet. Therefore, the selection of equipment now can be made in accordance with the time at our disposal, the justifiable cost, the scale desired, and the general requirements of the client. This does not mean, however, that arbitrary deliveries can be set for aerial photographic products. The factors in each project vary and each job must be considered in accordance with the factors involved. This accounts for the fact that products of aerial surveys may readily vary from $1.25 to $200 a square mile. Sherman M. Fairchild became interested in the design of a radically different aerial camera during the war. At its close he was about ready to demonstrate his design to the War Department. By 1920, he was able to bring out his first completed model. It had a number of radical features, one of which was the first dependable high-speed between-the-lens shutter, which makes for accuracy in aerial photographic work. Another feature was the use of metal throughout, eliminating the wooden parts that had been employed in wartime cameras. Another feature was the interchangeability of parts.

I DESIRE to communicate to the Institute the results of a few analyses which bear on the condition of carbon in gray and white iron. These analyses were made in the course of an investigation, now in progress, of the chemical composition of "chilling" irons. It will be remembered that Bell says he found no material difference in the amount and condition of carbon in gray and white pig iron made at the Clarence furnace, in England, and he therefore refers the difference in color and appearance in these two varieties of iron to the size of the particles of graphite. I quote from his "Chemical Phenomena of Iron Smelting:" "The inference I would draw from the information afforded by these analyses is, that the condition of iron in respect to its so-called &apos;richness&apos; is, within certain limits, entirely independent of its chemical constitution.. .. In the fluid state, I conceive the carbon, so taken up, confers upon the iron the property of fusion much below the temperature at which the pure metal melts, and the carbon itself may be regarded as dissolved in the iron. If, during the process of manufacture, the pig metal has been formed at a low temperature, consolidation, I imagine, takes place under such circumstances that the crystals are so minute, and the carbon which is separated assumes the uncombined or graphitic form in particles so minute as to be invisible, and, in consequence, the iron is white. If, on the other hand, the furnace is working at a very high temperature, the intensely heated iron crystallizes with large facets, upon which the extruded carbon assumes the condition of distinct plates or flakes. Should the temperature be less intense, these crystals are of smaller dimensions, and the separated carbon is less conspicuous, and, as the temperature of the furnace declines, the crystals decrease in size, as do the flakes of carbon, until both disappear in white iron.. .. Returning, then, to temperature as the cause of differences in quality of pig iron, the &apos;chilling&apos; of gray metal, and its conversion into white, may be regarded as the effect of preventing, by rapid cooling, the formation

THAT the quiescence of a liquid while it is solidifying should favor the formation of columnar crystals, normal of the cooling surface, is seen readily on considering the mechanism of solidification. First; each particle of any composite liquid, whether it be an aqueous solution or a molten metal; in solidifying splits up into two parts, different in composition and hence in fusibility. One part is infusible at the, existing temperature, - and hence solidifies, and in general attaches itself to the inclosing walls of metal which have already, solidified; A, Fig. 1. Soon after the search for uranium ores on the Colorado Plateau began in earnest, thousands of feet of drill core ranging from 1 1/8 to 2 1/8 in. diam became available for study. Although significant advances had been made in the technique of quantitative gamma-ray borehole logging, instrumentation was in the development stage, and complete reliance could not be placed on gamma-ray logs alone to interpret quantitatively the meaning of radioactivity in a drillhole. A method that would be faster than chemical analysis and still give reproducible and reliable results for various drill core sizes was desirable to provide additional information on the enormous footage of drill core being accumulated. A solid phosphor scintillation drill core scanner was designed and constructed. Basically the instrument was developed to measure radiation from a drill core which would not be clearly recorded by a gamma-ray logger using a Geiger tube as the sensitive element. Such data would be beneficial in constructing isorad maps to delineate ore-bearing zones. A calibration in the range 0.01 to 0.1 pct eU3O8 was provided; above 0.1 pct eU3O8 gamma-ray logs were available and were being used to calculate grade and tonnage of ore reserves. The core scanner, however, has been used to estimate equivalent uranium content of ore-grade materials containing as much as 2.2 pct eU308 with an accuracy of ±10 pct, the sample being in the form of a BX drill core. Actually, an apparent calibration of eU308 vs counts per unit time is a straight line with a slope that is a function of the sensitive element and the geometry of the counting assembly. A true calibration that will show the expected departure from a straight line is due principally to the random nature of the pulse from a radiation source and the nonlinearity of the electron circuitry.

THOUGH production began in Canada only a short time after the discovery of oil in the United States, it has never attained large proportions, and if we were to judge entirely by the past the reserves of Canada would be put at a very low figure. There are only two areas from which oil is marketed at the present time; one, the old district around Petrolia in southern Ontario, and the other is the small Sheep Creek field near Calgary in Alberta. The former district has produced between 200,000 and 800,000 bbl. annually for the past 40 years, recent figures being near the minimum amount. Sheep Creek has produced about 12,000 bbl. annually for the past five years. The known reserves in proved territory in each of these fields are exceedingly small, when considered in terms of world reserves. The chief hope of Canada for reserves of considerable magnitude lies in the western provinces. Sedimentary rocks similar to those in the productive fields of the United States occupy thousands of square miles in the western provinces, so that it seems likely that somewhere within this great area the peculiar conditions necessary for the presence of oil pools will be found. Prospecting is being carried on energetically by several large companies, as well as by many independents. The Dominion Government, which controls most of the public lands, is pursuing a .fairly liberal policy toward the prospector, which should stimulate wildcatting; although the province of British Columbia, which controls public lands within that province, is at present unwilling to give adequate encouragement to make wildcatting attractive. As there is really no assurance that any productive pools will be found in western Canada, the estimates of reserves are subject to a wide possibility of error. In making estimates, the various areas within which geologic conditions are more or less uniform are discussed separately; the estimates given for each area are not given with the idea that there is a reasonable probability of their eventually proving to be correct. It is hoped that an average of these estimates, taken together with those made for other undeveloped countries, will give a correct total of reserves

IN describing the mining and treatment of ore at the Broken Hill Proprietary mine E. J. Horwood, superintendent of mines, gave the following account of the development of flotation there. It was in 1902 that the recovery of zinc from the ore by flotation was hit upon. The former general man-ager, Mr. Delprat, directed our then research officer, Mr. Carmichael, to try boiling the tailing with salt cake of which there was a considerable tonnage left over from the leaching process. The idea was the possibility of dissolving the zinc. Carmichael made the. Experi-ment, but, rather discouraged, took the glass beaker down to the general manager&apos;s office, remarking that he could not get the stuff to settle. On showing the beaker to Mr. Delprat, the latter recognized the marked distinction between the black scum on the surface and the rest of the tailings, and exclaimed: "Why, this is the very thing we are after; the zinc is floating!" Patents were applied for at once, but later on it was found that another investigator, Potter, had already hit upon the idea of flotation. His patents, however, were so involved with other operations that his process was impracticable. Litigation followed, but in the end the B. H. P. paid the Potter Company a substantial sum as settlement. In the case of Carmichael&apos;s beaker, the acid in the salt cake acted on the small amount of carbonate present in the ore, producing CO. bubbles. Owing to the aversion of sulfide crystals to being wetted, the gas as generated attached itself to the zinc in in-creasing quantities until there was sufficient to buoy the zinc particle to the surface. This action went The next problem was to apply the principle on a commercial scale, and this involved much experiment and developmental work. Various kinds of sloping copper pans with gas jets below to maintain the tem-perature were first tried, but were found too slow and too costly in operation.

There were no important developments in the oil and gas industry in South Arkansas during 1935. Oil production, totaling 11,138,340 bbl., continued the decline that has been normal since 1925, but the decline from 1934 was only 278,600 bbl., or 2.5 per cent. The principal decline was in the Smackover field, while only the Champagnolle and Garland City fields showed notable increases. More wells were drilled than in any recent year, with a total of 123 completions. There were 44 oil wells, with a total reported initial daily production of 10,013 bbl., or an average of 227 bbl. per well. Two small gas wells were completed in Union County, where the gas is used locally for pumping and field operations. There were 77 dry holes, of which 28 were in or near oil fields and 49 were wildcats. Active drilling oper-at&apos;ions declined from 65 at the beginning of 1935 to 41 at the end. Most of the drilling was done during the first part of the year, espr-chially (luring the flurry caused by the discovery late in 1934 of the "Taylor" sand production in the Champagnolle field, but the producing area was soon outlined. In November, 1935, the J. E. Crosbie, Inc., NO. 1 Sullivant in sec. 12, 17s. 14W., producing 560 bbl. per day at 3175 ft., opened a new sand lens in the eastern part of the field. The Camden "oil field," discovered in the last week of 1934, remained a one-well field, although four offset tests were drilled, besides a number of others in the immediate vicinity. Several interesting deep tests were drilled during the year, which added a great deal to the general knowledge of the subsurface formations and the structure of south Arkansas, but were not particularly encouraging as to prospects for the very deep production. First, the H. L. Hunt, No. 15 E. F. Gregory well in sec. 10, 17S., 14\W., in the Champagnolle field, was drilled to a depth of 6911 ft. It pene-trated red beds for 2982 ft., from 2943 to 5925 ft., mostly if riot entirely of Lower Cretaceous age. There was some anhydrite in the last 135 ft. of red beds. This was followed by 890 ft. of limestone, probahly Permian, and the rock salt was struck at 6815 ft. The salt is now generally conceded to be of Permian age. The term "electrocapillary amalgamation" is used in this paper to designate amalgamation processes that depend upon electrocapillary phenomenon; i.e., the action of an electric current upon the surface tension of mercury at the contact with aqueous solutions. Electro-capillary amalgamation is selected as a name for these processes because the electrocapillary phenomenon has been found to be the effective agent in the use of sodium amalgam, as well as in the various processes using an electric current from a source outside of the amalgam. Amalgamation processes that depend upon supplying an electric current to the amalgam from an outside source, such as batteries and generators, have previously been called electrical amalgamation processes. There has been a tremendous amount of experimental work done on amalgamation processes involving the use of an electric current, as shown by the large number of patents issued on these processes: the earliest in 1885 and the latest in 1934l. Regardless of all the experimental work, the fundamental principles causing the operation of electrocapillary amalgamation processes have not been described. The explanation usually given is that an electric current keeps the amalgam bright and clean. Patent No. 328532 states: It is well known that when amalgam plates are used for collecting gold and silver from their ores the surfaces of these plates are liable to become tarnished or sickened by certain substances contained in the ores or in the current of water which is employed to carry the ore over the plates, and that in this condition they are unfitted for amalgamating the particles of gold and silver. To prevent this and to keep the surfaces of the amalgamation plates always bright and in a better condition for catching and amalgamating the particles of gold and silver I employ electricity in the following manner: . . . A similar explanation is given 49 years later, in patent No. 1953364: The sodium (Na) ions lose their charge at the cathode becoming sodium atoms, which do not react with the electrolyte, but follow the grounded electrical current through the mercury body producing in their passage sodium amalgam and liberate themselves in the amalgamation compartment when brought in contact with the fed

The paper describes a machine developed for the purpose of concentrating clear optical grade fluorspar crystal from a feed material containing less than 1 pct impurities. The principle of concentration is based on the fact that in a liquid having an index of refraction equal to that of fluorite (n — 1.434) clear crystals are invisible, whereas crystals containing occluded impurities absorb a part of the light. As the crystals pass through a light beam, undesired crystals give themselves away by creating a shadow on a photoelectric receiver. .The shadow is converted by the photoelectric cell into an electric pulse. An electronic circuit amplifies this pulse and commands the operation of a mechanical concentrator. Hp HE crystal laboratory, Dept. of Physics, Massa--*- chusetts lnstitute of Technology, was confronted with the problem of obtaining a supply of optical grade calcium fluoride (CaF,) for use in growing synthetic CaF, crystals. A search of the known fluorspar deposits did not indicate that any quantity of optical spar could be obtained. Even the best material had to be sorted by hand to remove impurities. The process for growing CaF, crystals developed by Professor D. C. Stockbarger of the Dept. of Physics, M.I.T., necessitates very pure feed materials. Exclusion of impurities is required, even in amounts detectable only spectrographically. The impurities occurred as minute inclusions of SiO,, BaSO,, CaCO,, FeS2, water or air. Crystals up to 4 in. in diam and weighing several pounds are made by the Harshaw Chemical Co. in Cleveland. Since the time required to grow a 4-in. crystal is about one week, and since the cost of manufacture is high, removal of impurities by any concentration method appeared practical. The mineral engineering section of the Dept. of Metallurgy undertook to investigate the possibility of concentrating clear optical fluorspar, —4 mesh + 10 mesh, from a feed containing over 99 pct CaF,. Various innovations of the known methods of concentration were considered, but in each case the minute amount of impurities associated with the crystal produced such extremely small differences

THE Rocky MountainClub brought into the East the spirit of the West; the impulse to build, to develop, to accept unquestion-ingly the comradeship and help of any straight shooter who had it in him to accom-plish things and a will to work. That this was the spirit of the Club was due to its leaders. It was their spirit and they attracted around them men of the same stamp. Among those who made the Club what it was no one had larger in-low fluence than William Boyce Thompson, the vice-president and chief of financial staff. It was characteristic of him that the same financial genius that was employed in building up Nevada Consolidated, In-spiration, Magma, Texas Gulf, and as director of the Metro-politan Life and the Federal Reserve Bank, was freely placed at the service of the Club. It was equally char- acteristic that the generosity that financed the Red Cross Mission to Russia inspired the use of the Club funds for Belgian and war relief. "W. B.," as he is known to his many friends, was born at Virginia City in Alder Gulch, Mont., on May 13, 1869. His father, William Thompson, born at Cobourg, Ont., had drifted into the old Northwest and, hearing at Yankton of the gold strike at Bannack, crossed the plains on the Oregon trail in the summer of 1863, arriv-ing in Alder Gulch at the inception of a mining boom that lasted several years, during which something like $60,000,000 in gold was yielded by the placer diggings. His mother was a daughter of Maj. James R. Boyce, Sr., from Logan County, Ky., who had served under General Sterling Price of the Confederate Army. Major Boyce&apos;s ancestors were early settlers of the Old Dominion, and his grandfather had seen military service in the war for American independence. Major Boyce&apos;s mother was a descendant of the Marshall and Smith families of Westmoreland County, Va. When Thompson was eleven years old, the family moved to Butte, then a silver camp. He attended the public schools of Butte, but desiring a better education, entered Phillips Exeter Academy and later the Colum-bia School of Mines. Returning West, for a year or two he ran the Boulder Chief mine near Basin, Mont., which earned him a sobriquet, "Boulder Thompson." While here, some old ore sacks, oil-soaked, introduced him to flotation. He was also the first to leach some of the ore dumps of Butte.

The principle of concentration is based on the fact that in a liquid having an index of refraction equal to that of fluorite (n — 1.434) clear crystals are invisible, whereas crystals containing occluded impurities absorb a part of the light. As the crystals pass through a light beam, undesired crystals give themselves away by creating a shadow on a photoelectric receiver. .The shadow is converted by the photoelectric cell into an electric pulse. An electronic circuit amplifies this pulse and commands the operation of a mechanical concentrator. Hp HE crystal laboratory, Dept. of Physics, Massa--*- chusetts lnstitute of Technology, was confronted with the problem of obtaining a supply of optical grade calcium fluoride (CaF,) for use in growing synthetic CaF, crystals. A search of the known fluorspar deposits did not indicate that any quantity of optical spar could be obtained. Even the best material had to be sorted by hand to remove impurities. The process for growing CaF, crystals developed by Professor D. C. Stockbarger of the Dept. of Physics, M.I.T., necessitates very pure feed materials. Exclusion of impurities is required, even in amounts detectable only spectrographically. The impurities occurred as minute inclusions of SiO,, BaSO,, CaCO,, FeS2, water or air. Crystals up to 4 in. in diam and weighing several pounds are made by the Harshaw Chemical Co. in Cleveland. Since the time required to grow a 4-in. crystal is about one week, and since the cost of manufacture is high, removal of impurities by any concentration method appeared practical. The mineral engineering section of the Dept. of Metallurgy undertook to investigate the possibility of concentrating clear optical fluorspar, —4 mesh + 10 mesh, from a feed containing over 99 pct CaF,. Various innovations of the known methods of concentration were considered, but in each case the minute amount of impurities associated with the crystal produced such extremely small differences

RICE (written discussion *).-An interesting and important question arose during the coal famine of last winter as to whether the development of new mines should be discouraged on account of the need of labor for the necessary construction and development work at a time of scarcity of labor, more especially as there was an apparent overcapacity of existing mines. The question was referred to the author for his comments, which led to the study of the statistics. The essential results of this study are indicated on the accompanying chart, which illustrates, among other things, the increase in production or consumption, and the estimated maximum production capacity of the bituminous and sub-bituminous mines of the United States. The curves shown are based on data published in the "Mineral Resources" of the United States Geological Survey, and cover the period from 1900 to 1916 inclusive. The following curves have been drawn from the data secured: 1. Average number of days that the mines worked. 2. Yearly total production of bituminous and sub-bituminous mines. 2a. Yearly production of machine-mined coal. 3. Average annual production, equivalent to consumption, for a period of 17 years. 4. Number of coal mine employees each year. 5. Estimated capacity of mines, on basis of 300 working clays in the year. 6. Estimated drop in capacity if no new mines are opened. Considering these curves and the data from which they were constructed: It will be noted that the average number of days the miners worked varied from 193 in 1908 to 234 in 1900, the average being 217. The causes for so many idle days out of the possible total number of working days in the year are well known, namely: (a) Lack of business; (b) lack of cars. Taking the country as a whole, (a) is the important factor, which might otherwise be expressed as being an excess of productive capacity. The yearly production of the mines, which is practically synonymous with consumption, has shown a steady increase, with a few set-backs. An average line has been struck which indicates that the average annual increase of production has been 18 million short tons (16,330,000 metric tons).

J. S. Vanick,* Washington, D. C. (written discussion).—To those who have been confronted with the study of the gas-metal reactions, this paper is a most welcome contribution. My personal interest in work bearing upon this general problem, stimulated by an appreciation of the difficulties inherent to problems of this type, prompts a few words of discussion. Table 2 of the paper shows a gradual increase in the nitrogen content with an increase in pressure, and an interpretation follows in which nitrogcn is used as the compressed medium when the conditions admit that cyanogen gas could be active as a contaminating ingredient. Fusions of electrolytic iron made in the induction furnace in an atmosphere of deoxidized nitrogen and out of contact with contaminating materials have shown no microscopic evidence of -a nitrogen increase; using a refractory-lined graphite crucible in the furnace under the same conditions or admitting air often resulted in the occurrence of nitride needles in the solidified melt. These results suggested that a nitrogenous compound served as a vehicle for the introduction of nitrogen and that such compound was not available when the pure gas and carbon-free refractory were used. The fusion of pure iron in pure nitrogen is perhaps a matter of theoretical interest. The author&apos;s work serves a more practical purpose when applied to steels rather than iron. Table 2 reports the absence of nitride needles in melts made under pressure of one atmosphere, although the quantity of nitrogen present would seem to exceed microscopically detectable percentages. In some recent work29 on carburized iron, nitride needles have been observed in areas analyzing as low as 0.015 per cent. nitrogen. This low percentage of nitrogen would indicate that the solubility limit is less than 0.030 per cent. for hypoeutectoid steels. There is the possibility that the areas of pearlite which exist in a hypoeutectoid steel restrict the distribution of nitrogen and limit its presence to the ferritie fields. In view of this work and the references quoted by the author, I am led to expect that the value for the solubility of nitrogen in solidified iron may approach

A RETROSPECT of the growth of the production of pig-iron for the past half century would be the history of the invention and introduction of heated blast as applied to the smelting of iron ores. As the apparatus employed was improved in conception and construction, the economical operation of the furnaces to which it was attached was the more marked, and the production correspondingly increased. To compare the original iron box placed over a coal fire with the modern hot-blast stove, with its combustion-chamber, gas-burners, and air-regulators, would be as unfavorable to the former as to contrast the product of the little Blauöfen with the yield of the improved furnaces of to-day. But, as these little Blauöfen were the germs from which the larger plants have grown, so from the crude apparatus invented and applied by Neilson has grown, in the face of great opposition, the more economical hot-blast stoves now in use. It is not surprising that an innovation like heated blast should have received a large amount of attention from metallurgists, nor that men of recognized ability should formerly have been found both among its champions and opponents, but it is remarkable that, at the present day, with the results of careful research and thorough experiment compiled in convenient shape for perusal, there are iron¬masters who still consider it economy to allow the products of combustion to escape into the atmosphere, rather than utilize them in heating the blast, because of a supposed injury to the quality of the product. In the present state of knowledge and practice, it is proper to express as an axiom, that a well-constructed hot-blast apparatus is essential to the economic operation of an iron-producing plant. Of the interpretation of proper construction there is of necessity a variety of opinions, and, with the view of solving the problem, the apparatus for heating blast has from time to time assumed various forms. Boxes, cylinders, and pipes, placed horizontally, vertically, inclined, or in circles and spirals, have been tried ; there have been pistol-shaped pipes, double pipes, divided or diaphragm pipes, siphon pipes, and as much variety in the mains, connections, flues, and setting.
