In rock- or ore-crushing tests all data, in order to be valuable for study and comparison, should be obtained and tabulated under conditions as uniform as possible. The results of many such tests have no value for comparison, because of incomplete data and the lack of uniform conditiops, screens and scale of sizing, etc. The purpose of this paper is to suggest a form of standard specifications which may be developed by the Milling Committee and approved by the A. I. M. E. for rock-crushing tests. It is not intended to discuss any theories of rock crushing. Reports of rock-crushing tests should include the following details: 1. Description of the machine employed (jaw or gyratory crushers, rolls, stamps,tube mills, Chilean mills, etc.), 2. Method and material (timber, concrete, etc.) of foundation. Much power is dissipated in the vibration of poor foundations. 3. Locality from which the rock or ore was obtaincd, and geological, mineralogical, and physical characters of the material. 4. The power consumption of the machine running with no load and with full load, the unit of power being 1 hp. per 24 hr, 5. The capacity of the machine in tons (of 2000 Ib.) per 24 hr. 6. The duty in tons per horsepower-day. 7. The screen analysis of feed and product by the proposed A. I. M. E. standard screen scale. On the foregoing statement, the following remarlrs are offered. Toughness of Rock Table P shows the relative crushing duty of the same machine on three different characters of rock, all other crushing conditions being the same. This table indicates that the specific resistance of the rock to crushing, may affect the crushing duty of a unit of power as much as 300 per cent. Perhaps this quality may be called toughness. I wish to call the attention of the Institute to a peculiar variety of anthracite which occurs in the Buck Mountain vein at our collieries at Drifton, and in the same and other veins in different localities in the anthracite coal-fields. It is known among the workmen as iron-gray or cast-iron. It has a dull, greasy appearance, as if a piece of ordinary anthracite had been rubbed with a dirty and greasy rag and allowed to dry. It was formerly considered a very impure coal containing a high percentage of ash, and was picked out of the coal and thrown away. But the following analysis of it and of its ash, made by Mr. J. Blodget Britton, of Philadelphia, shows that such is not the case, the percentage of ash not being much higher than that of the ordinary anthracites as they are prepared for market. ANALYSIS OF COAL. We found that it burned with intense heat, and apparently as freely as our other coal does. Mr. Britton is probably right in his view, that the difference in appearance is not due to impurities in the coal, but to the fact that the carbon is in a more or less graphitic form, as many of the standard coals are no purer. I bring this before the Institute as I know that a large quantity of this valuable fuel is thrown away every year, on account of its supposed impurities.

Uniquely colored, thin-bedded quartzite is quarried between Crossville and Crab Orchard in Cumberland County, Tenn. It is produced in all sizes up to the limits of transportation from beds usually ranging in thickness from less than Vi in. to 6 in. The stone is very resistant to wear and weathering and is marketed throughout the country for many different purposes in exterior and interior construction. The annual production exceeds 36,000 tons, valued at nearly $1,000,000. THE building stone of the Crab Orchard District is a fine-grained, thin-bedded sandstone which is so strongly cemented by silica that it may be classed as quartzite. As used in this paper the term building stone includes dimension stone, rubble, ashlar, flagstone, and rough broken stone. The Crab Orchard District is in the central portion of Cumberland County, Tenn. It is named from the town of Crab Orchard near which the stone was quarried first for industrial use. The heart of the district is an area of some 1200 acres from 1 to 3 miles east of Crossville which is 70 miles west of . Knoxville and 125 miles east of Nashville (fig. 1). At the present time, there are about 15 quarries worked by companies and individuals. Geology: The Crab Orchard District is on the Cumberland Plateau, or Cumberland Mountain as it is called frequently. Most of the area is characterized by a comparatively even surface from 1800 to 2000 ft in elevation and is drained by streams flowing into the Tennessee River. Included in the district are two quarries located 7 miles west of Cross-ville and this area is drained by tributaries of the Cumberland River. Most of the quarries are located near the 1800-ft contour which is just below the general upland surface. The surface rock over most of the district is the Rockcastle sandstone which has a thickness of about 260 ft.1 It is the topmost of the six formations of

Bill S.1431 for the creation of a Department of Natural Resources has received a propitious hearing before the Senate Committee on Government Operations. Interior Secretary Rogers C. B. Morton was one of the prominent witnesses who testified in favor. The department had been proposed, Morton said, with "the conviction that the development of all natural resources would be harmonized with the most practicable possible means to protect and preserve the environment, consistent with the social and economic needs of the Nation." Another opinion on the pro side came from Atomic Energy Commissioner Clarence E. Larson, who said that a "total picture" had become essential to the establishment of a policy for developing energy resources in the best public interest. Commissioner James T. Ramey, on the other hand, was one of the AEC dissenters. Ramey said he believed the reorganization of resource responsibilities would hinder efforts to deal with energy-environmental problems and prevent the use of AEC "expertise and facilities" to the greatest advantage. As Arnold Weber, associated director of the Office of Management and Budget, pointed out, however, retiring AEC Chairman Glenn T. Seaborg is in favor of the new department. Another supporter, and one who can cast a vote on the bill, is Sen. Frank E. Moss. Final Standards for emissions from new stationary sources will be published by the Environmental Protection Agency on October 27. The initial proposals, appearing in the Federal Register on August 17, called for limiting emissions per million Btu of heat input (maximum 2-hr average) to 0.2 lb of particulate matter, and, where solid fuel is burned, to 1.2 lb of sulfur dioxide and 0.7 lb of nitrogen dioxide. While the new rules are mainly for new plants, the EPA is also proposing them for "existing plants which are modified in such a way as to increase or alter. . . their emissions."

The House Committee of the Engineering Societies Building has lent to he members of the three welfare committees a room on the ground floor of the building where they can carry on some of their war activities. Two sewing machines and two knitting machines are installed there and ladies are invited to sew for the Foreign War Relief Committee and knit for the Emergency Committee, which is working for the 27th Engineers, a special mining regiment. The Emergency Committee, Mrs. H. Norman Spicer, Chairman, reports the formation of a committed of 21 members. The organization meeting was held March 7, and plans were made for future activities as follows: A letter was read from Mr. Ingalls asking for 72 sweaters, 72 helmets, 66 pairs of wristlets as well as 772 pairs of socks, 272 being for immediate delivery. To meet this request it was decided to secure the helmets and wristlets from the Navy League, and to undertake the making of the sweaters and socks ourselves. Accordingly Mrs. H. N. Spicer and Mrs. J. H. Devereux were empowered to buy wool in sufficient quantities, and woven material for the 72 sweaters, sending the bills to Mr. Ingalls, who had guaranteed the money from the Engineering and Mining Journal. This was attended to promptly, and the materials were ready for distribution to the committee on March 13. After considerable difficulty, knitting machines for the socks were discovered and the agent came to demonstrate them. Mrs. Spicer gave one to the Committee and Mr. Ingalls has guaranteed the money to buy two when the manufacturers can deliver them. Up to April 6, 130 pairs of socks, machine and hand-knitted, have been handed in-also 68 sweaters, 80 helmets and 90 pairs of wristlets. It has been calculated that it needs five women knitting behind each man at the front to keep him continuously supplied with knitted garments.

LABOR. conditions have finally caused rock-drilling machines to supplant hand drillers in the Japanese mining industry, and have encouraged this study. During a period of three years 25,000 tests were made on 67 different American, Japanese, and European rock drills, using, respectively, the Paynter testing machine, and drilling in granite and limestone. Recorded were: air consumption, speed of rotation, torque of rotation, foot-pounds of striking energy, air pressures, input horsepowers, and speed of rock penetration. The author expresses his views on the interrelation of these factors and offers theoretical support, as well, by formulas based upon the mechanics of impact. He discusses the different designs of the valves, cylinders, piston hammers and rotation devices involved in the different types of rock drills, with respect to their merits and defects and offers conclusions about the factors that should be considered in the new design of a superior rock drill. The author's mathematical demonstrations and arguments for a value of "best feed clearance" of the drill bit from the rock are based upon the hand-operated screw-fed type of hammer drill. Automatic feeds have not been considered in this paper except for the tests on one drifter with air feed, 10 air-feed stopers, and some hand-held blockholers. The following classes of drills, with one of each model, size, or type, were tested: 23 heavy drifters, 34 light drifters and hand-held drills, and 10 stopers. Engineering design problems encountered by mining engineers often depend on the properties of natural granular materials such as soil, poorly consolidated sediment, fault gouge, and hydrothermally produced clay. The physical properties of such granular materials frequently are determined by the properties of silicate clays. In most mining applications, the clays are in contact with water. Swelling of clay due to water infiltration can interfere with underground support and haulage systems. Water-saturated clay on fault, fracture, and bedding planes causes slope failures in open pit mines, roof falls and heaving of weak underclays in coal mines. Water may be removed and cementing agents may be produced in clays by electrical methods. When an electrical potential gradient is applied to a charged capillary by two electrodes, water moves toward the negative electrode.1 This electrokinetic phenomena is known as electroosmosis and has been used to successfully dewater clay minerals which lack strength because of water. A consolidation effect occurs when the flow of water is accompanied by a decrease in water content. Electrochemical changes in the clay result in cementing and irreversible hardening. Theory A mathematical basis of electroosmotic phenomena is presented by Helmholtz.3 Smoluchowski5 modifies Helmholtz’ model and presents Eq. 1 to describe fluid flow velocity due to electroosmosis. For this formula, the zeta potential can be measured experimentally. The Helmholtz-Smoluchowski model is reasonably valid for clay aggregates with large pores saturated with fresh water or dilute electrolyte solutions.° An assumption used for Eq. 1 (equations are given Table 1; terms are defined in Table 2) is that the thickness of the electrical double layer surrounding the clay particles is small compared with the pore radii. Because this is generally not the case, Schmid7 presents Eq. 2. The volume charge density in the pore may be approximated from cation exchange capacity and porosity measurements. Casagrande8 offers a semi-empirical relationship (Eq. 3) for volume rate of electroosmotic flow and finds that k, is relatively constant for most clays with an average

The outstanding event of the year 1929 in the Appalachian area was the intensive drilling activity in the Bradford and Richburg pools of northwestern Pennsylvania and southwestern New York State, particularly the former, in connection with the continued extension of the five-spot system of water-flooding. More new development work was undertaken and completed than during any previous year since reclamation methods were first applied. This was due in part to an excellent price for oil and in part to discovery of the fact that more intensive methods (five-spotting) yielded greater profit. While several oil wells of comparatively large initial production were completed, no new oil pools of significance were discovered in the Appalachian area during the year. A number of small gas pools were opened in areas already surrounded by producing wells and at least three others in areas located some distance from any producing pools. Petroleum Development According to statistics of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, 33,7,57,000 bbl. of petroleum were produced in the Appalachian field during 1929 as compared to 31,060,000 bbl. in 1928.' Of the total 1929 production, 23,391,618 bbl. consisted of Pennsylvania grade oil as compared to 21,096,710 bbl. in 1928. The 1929 Pennsylvania grade production represents an increase of 37.4 per cent. over that of 1924. This increase can be attributed largely to the rapid development of water-flooding in the Bradford and Richburg pools. The Bradford field of northwestern Pennsylvania and adjaccnt portions of New York State experienced the busiest year since the boom days of the early eighties. Wells completed during the year totaled 2679.2 In spite of the high prices asked for acreagc, which in some of the choicest territory has been as high as $6000 an acre, a considerable number of properties changed ownership during the year. There is at present a pronounced tendency to consolidate the great number of small individually operated properties into larger units.

THE present note is intended as an addition to my previous communication on the volumetric determination of manganese, read at the Roanoke meeting," it having been suggested that the circumstances under which my experiments had been conducted, were essentially different from those met with in the analysis of irons. The method used in these experiments is the same in all its details as that described in the paper referred to. I have made seven experiments in all: two of these were in duplicate on half a gramme of a sample of spiegel dissolved in hydrochloric acid; one was on the same amount of spiegel with the addition of 25 C.C. of a standard solution of potassium permanganate; one was on the same amount of spiegel with the addition of 35 C.C. permanganate and much organic matter, viz., one drop of castor-oil, two or three drops of coal-tar benzol arid of gasolene (petroleum), about ten of alcohol, portions of starch and of sugar about the size of a small pea, and about half an inch of a common match cut into shavings. This organic matter was added to the manganese solution after the hydrochloric acid had been replaced by nitric, and the solution was heated until the wood-shavings had disappeared. The fifth experiment was made by dissolving half a gramme of spiegel alone in nitric acid; the sixth by dissolving half a gramme of spiegel in nitric acid with the addition of 25 C.C. potassium permanganate, some oxalic acid, half an inch of a match, one filter-paper 7 cm. in diameter, and two drops each of castor-oil and turpentine; and the seventh experiment by dissolving half a gramme of spiegel in hydrochloric acid and adding 35 C.C. permanganate, without however taking the precaution to evaporate off all the excess of hydrochloric acid. Under these circumstances, one would expect that if organic matter exercises any influence on the determination, it would be plainly evident in the results obtained. Tensile properties of annealed molybdenum were investigated from 1000" to—200°C. In the vicinity of room temperature a well-defined transition in tensile properties occurs. Reduction in area decreases from over 80 pct to 0 pct and, simultaneously, the yield strength increases about 60,000 psi. MOLYBDENUM, tungsten, iron, and many other metals and alloys with the body-centered cubic and hexagonal close-packed crystal structures change from ductile to brittle behavior over some relatively narrow temperature range. The temperature at which this transition in ductility occurs depends on chemical composition, microstructure, and method of testing. When fine grained, completely recrystallized molybdenum of commercial purity is tested in uniaxial tension at a slow strain rate, the transition occurs at slightly below room temperature.' Iron2 and tungsten3 tested under similar conditions become brittle at temperatures close to the boiling point of nitrogen, — 195°C and at about 200°C, respectively. A sharp change in ductility is uncommon in metals with the face-centered cubic crystal structure, however, a relatively sharp transi- tion in notched bar impact properties has been observed below room temperature in a face-centered cubic copper-antimony alloy.4 A transition from ductile to brittle behavior is usually explained by the concepts originally developed by Ludwik,5 and discussed and elaborated on by others including Orowan,6 Hollomon and Jaffe,7 and Gensamer8 In brief, there are two aspects to strength, first the resistance to flow and second the resistance to fracture. Both are functions of temperature, strain, strain rate, stress system, composition, and microstructure. With decreased test temperature the flow stress required to initiate plastic deformation increases more rapidly than the fracture strength and brittle fracture occurs at that temperature where the yield strength equals or exceeds a brittle fracture strength. This investigation was conducted to determine the effects of temperature, strain, and rate of straining on the flow and fracture strengths of molybdenum above, through, and below the ductile-to-brittle transition. It appears that in the earlier days of anthracite coal mining, 1824-25, the Lehigh region mined 76 per cent. of all the coal sent to market. During the same period Wyoming sent 12 and 5 per cent. respectively, whilst the Schuylkill sent 11 and 18 per cent., the number of tons marketed being in those days very small indeed. In the year 1828 the Schuylkill region mined over one-half of all the coal sent to market, and continued to do so for thirty years (with the exception of the year 1831), until 1858 ; since that date the production has declined very steadily in comparison with the other regions, until, in 1876, it was only 34 per cent. Wyoming, in the year 1820, was mining 40 per cent., but the production of all the regions was very small; in six years it declined to 5 per cent., increased to 34 per cent. in 1831, declined to 10 per cent. in 1838. Since which time the increase has been gradual, until 1873-75 Wyoming produced over 50 per cent. of all the anthracite coal sent to market. In 1867 the production exceeded that of Schuylkill, and has continued to do so since that time. In the year 1876, during the existence of the "coal combination," Wyoming lost 9 per cent.; during the same time Lehigh gained 7 and Schuylkill 2 per cent. over their relative production of the preceding year, the decrease of Wyoming being two and a half million tons, the increase of the Lehigh one million, the decrease of the Schuylkill nearly three-quarters of a million. The extraordinary production of the Lehigh region at a time of decreased demand and in opposition to an agreement with the other regions to limit the supply to the supposed demand mas the cause of the disagreement which ultimately broke up the combination of the great coal-producing and carrying companies. The Lehigh region produced very steadily, from 1829 to 1854, an average of about 22 per cent. of the whole production. From 1854

This section will outline procedural, statistical, and model applications developed for specific problem solving and for specific applications in beneficiation processes. Iron Ore Processing Introduction of taconite as a basic raw material in the iron ore industry took place with application of high order technical resources for process development and engineering. This investment of resources encouraged computer utilization to maximize efficient use of capital. From this recognition, process control computers have been installed for operations use in the major taconite plants of the iron range. One of these installations, the Minntac Division of U. S. Steel at Mountain Iron, Minnesota, is described in the paper by Chase in these proceedings. Other computer techniques used in taconite processing are outlined by Tuttle, Ahlquist and Carlson, representing Erie Mining. In this volume Tuttle, et al. describe statistical methods for development of information in taconite beneficiation. Statistical methods used in iron ore processing are described by Volin in treating flotation data as outlined in prior proceedings of the symposia and in other publications. 1,2,3 Industrial Minerals The use of linear programming for feed blending at the Carlsbad operation of International Minerals and Chemicals was outlined by Nunnekoven in 1963.4 Subsequent application of this procedure at the Kingston phosphate operation in Florida was described by Loper. Continued development led to installation of an on-line computer in the Kingston plant which reached operational status in 1967.6,7,8 Application of an on-line computer to industrial mineral production accomplished at Kingston is regarded as a milestone in computer use development. Following this achievement, the Cominco potash beneficiation plant near Saskastoon in Canada was automated by installation of an on- line computer programmed to carry out direct digital control functions to effectively operate the plant by process computer. Barite, or barytes as it is sometimes called, belongs to one of the lesser groups of nonmetallic minerals, of which 15 to 20 varieties are mined in California in amounts varying in value from a few hundred to almost half a million dollars annually. Commercial production of barite in California, according to the records of the State Mining Bureau (now Division of Mines), began in the year 1910 with shipments totaling 860 tons, valued at $5640 f.0.b. rail shipping point. With the exception of the years 1924 and 1925, when no shipments were made, the output has varied, reaching a maximum of 17,993 tons, worth $90,617, in 1927. The 1928 output was 13,406 tons, worth $55,888 f.0.b. rail shipping point, bringing the state total to the end of 1928 to 59,972 tons, valued at $313,930. Consumption of BaRitE in United States Crude barite sold or used by producers in the United States for the year 1927 amounted to 248,219 tons, valued at $1,594,423, according to the U. S. Bureau of Mines.l In addition, there was imported, principally from Germany, a total of 70,274 tons, valued at $253,284. Manufactured products from these tonnages combined were distributed in 1927 (the latest year for which figures are at present available) as follows: ground barite, 57,658 tons; lithopone, 174,083 tons; barium chemicals (including carbonate, 4,960 tons; chloride, 3,541 tons; binoxide and sulfate or blanc Jixe combined, 13,354 tons). Missouri accounts for nearly 50 per cent of the domestic crude barite, followed by Georgia and Tennessee, with lesser amounts from Arizona, California, Nevada, South Carolina, and Virginia. The feasibility of multistage heavy liquid cyclone beneficiation of spodumene was successfully demonstrated in this investigation. The indicated recovery for the multistage circuits was mathematically estimated as continuous test runs would be necessary to determine the true influence of a middlings recycle. In the three-stage circuit, both the concentrate analysis and spodumene recovery exceeded 90%. The two-stage circuits were unable to simultaneously yield an acceptable produce with a satisfactory recovery. With the Nation's growing industrial mineral requirements, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has undertaken the task of investigating new mineral dressing techniques and improving the existing concentrating methods of ore beneficiation. One such project is the gravity concentration of minerals using heavy liquid separation (HLS).1-3 Heavy liquid separation is based on the simple principle that a material, whose specific gravity is less than the density of a solution, will float on top of the liquid and a material with a greater specific gravity will sink. Heavy liquid separation techniques were developed in the laboratory over half a century ago but the process has yet to be commercially adopted. In the past, commercial operations have failed because of numerous problems.4 Industrial interest has recently been reactivated because of engineering advances. The number and quality of the heavy liquids suitable for mineral processing has increased while the cost has sharply dropped. New and improved liquid recovery systems5,6 are under consideration with present emphasis on 1) solvent extraction, 2) thermo-evaporation, and 3) water washing. The toxicity of the heavy liquids7 presents a problem, but throughout the chemical and mining industries, many similar hazardous materials are safely handled. A distinct advantage of using heavy liquids is its ability to provide a near perfect separation of fine-sized mineral particles even when the specific gravities are close. The most important process in a gypsum mill is calcining the crude mineral. There seems, however, to be little progress or change in calcining methods. This would not be surprising if the industry was not, in other ways, developing. The demand for gypsum in its various forms, however, is growing rapidly. The output has more than doubled in six years, while the value of gypsum products, through the introduction of higher priced. specialties like wall board, has nearly trebled in the same period. In other industries, under somewhat similar conditions, calcining in rotating cylinders, either by direct or indirect heat, has replaced the method that still prevails in gypsum mills. Efforts were made to use rotary calciners in manufacturing plaster of Paris in the early days of the industry in America; 25 years ago rotary calciners were in use in Germany. At that time there was great diversity of opinion in regard to their merit. In 1923, the output of calcined gypsum in the United States was 3,101,378 tons. About nine-tenths of this material was calcined in kettles, the remainder in rotary calciners. The ratio was about the same 10 years ago. During these 10 years, rotary calcining made relatively no gains, and there were no important changes in the construction of kettles. In their manipulation, the only change of consequence was in connection with the length of time that the gypsum is left in the kettle. For wall-plaster purposes, all producers who had not previously done so changed from second-settled to first-settled calcined gypsum, thereby reducing production costs and improving the plasticity and sand-carrying capacity of their plaster. Nevertheless, in the few mills in which they were installed, rotary calciners continue to operate, with possibly one or two exceptions, and to be highly successful. In these 10 years, the Cummer type of rotary calciner has disappeared. All rotaries now used are of the cement-mill type with a diameter of 6 or 7 ft. and length of 80 to 120 feet.

The orientation of metal crystals and grains, both large and small, can be detcrmined conveniently and accurately without the use of X-ray apparatus. This seems to be appreciated by so few metallurgists that it may be useful to explain in detail the method we have found most satisfactory in the laboratory—the reflection of light from crystallographie etch pits. This note includes a description of a suitable inexpensive instrument and instructions for etching various metals and for plotting the data. As the stereographie projection is used to facilitate handling the data, this note may he considered as an appendix to an earlier review of the metallurgical uses of the stercographie projection.' Various methods involving etch pits have been used by other investigators. Bridgman's method2 consists of attaching the specimen to a sphere (a transparent sphere is convenient4 , holding it at arm's length, and marking a spot on it when it has been turned so that the eteh pits reflect light into the eye of the observer from a lamp standing behind him. It has an accuracy of about 2" and is extrernely rapid. A greater accuracy can be obtained by having the reflected light fall on a screen, as has been done by Czochralski,5 Chalmers,6 and Schubnikov.7 All of these methods have been intended for undeformed single crystals. Tammann and his coworkers3,8 developed a method for estimating the number of grains in a polyerystalline aggregate having orientations in a given region of the stereographic triangle and thus obtained statistical information about deformation and reerystallization textures. While the method has had some use in recent years,9 it is not applicable to the majority of problems in physical metallurgy. Smith and Mehl10 determined orientations by plotting the directions of the sides of individual etch pits on a stereographic projection. The accuracy is limited to about 3" and the method requires careful polishing and high magnification.

The commercially exploited sedimentary apatites exhibit a number of variable lattice substitutions which affect their chemical composition. Carbonate is a major diluent of phosphorus values in sedimentary apatites. Substantial amounts of water as hydroxyl, hydronium, and tetrahedral hydroxyl ions substitute for fluorine and oxygen, calcium, and phosphate, respectively. Calcium is also replaced by several other divalent and monovalent cations. The structural formula demonstrates the substitutions in the lattice of the sedimentary apatites studied in view of the crystal-chemical relationships which have been postulated for the isomorphous apatite series. The lattice constant a. varies from 9.29 to 9.40 A for the apatites studied. Quantitative relationships between this constant and lattice substitution are complicated by the interaction of multiple substitutions whose influence is non-additive. The mineral apatite, the principal raw material source of phosphorus for agricultural and industrial applications, offers a wide area for investigation. Considerable research effort has been expended in the study of apatite crystal-chemistry by medical, biological, and earth scientists. Few of these studies deal directly with the sedimentary apatites from the major occurrences which are widely exploited for commercial uses. It is the purpose here to present chemical analyses of several sedimentary apatites and discuss their chemical composition in relation to the structural and crystalchemical principles which have been postulated for the apatite isomorphous series. THE STRUCTURE OF FLUORAPATITE The atomic structure of fluorapatite was described, independently, by Ngray-Szabd and Mehmel in 1930 and has been accepted as presented, with only minor changes,4 since that time. The hexaogonal unit cell with dimensions of a = 9.37 0.01 A and c = 6.88 0.01 A contains two molecules of the composition "There are six (PO4) groups in the cell, four calcium ions on the trigonal axes, surrounded prismati-cally by six oxygen ions and six calcium ions surrounded by an irregular polyhedron of a fluorine and five oxygens. Fluorines are at the comers of the reflexion planes, touching three calcium ions each".l7
