Can the mining industry in the United States accept the change and challenge of the "Now Generation" of an entirely new high-performance automated transportation system? Advanced transportation systems for the mining industry can be defined as those which lend themselves to automation and meet definite performance and cost objectives. The term automation shall mean that control of transportation system is accomplished by a closed loop electronic circuit which, when started on command, will continue to cycle as programmed until such time as an intelligent feed-back causes the system to shut down.

SLAGS studied in this investigation were from 0.25 to 0.35 pct plain carbon steels and were melted in a 3-ton acid-lined Lectromelt furnace with a 2500-kva transformer. The melting process employs a short, violent boil, which is partially blocked, and the desired carbon content is adjusted by pig iron or iron ore, depending on the preliminary carbon. A relatively small volume of slag is used in refinement. Bottom is here defined as that portion of the furnace that comes in contact with the molten metal, or all the surface below the slag line. Bottom trouble-i.e., holes in the bottom lining-is very seldom experienced at our plant. We have been watching the bottom lining over a period of some boo heats in the hope of having holes large enough to supply data for this report, but none occurred during that period. The bottom is eroded uniformly, occasionally with slightly deeper depressions around the taphole.

THE continuous vacuum filter, whether it be a vertical or horizontal disk, inside or outside drum, when properly applied is a very effective device for dewatering fine solids. Because of the number of variables that affect its performance, however, it is not possible to obtain consistently maximum moisture reduction in an operating plant. This paper presents a method for determining the average cake moisture and the variations in cake moisture to be anticipated when dewatering fine solids by continuous vacuum filters under normal operating conditions.

Dr. Rossiter W. Raymond, Past President, Honorary Member, and Secretary Emeritus, died suddenly of heart failure at his home, 123 Henry St., Brooklyn, N. Y., on the evening of Tuesday, Dec. 31, 1918. -He is survived by his' wife and daughter. He was one of the founders of the Institute and its second President, his genius was the Institute's guiding spirit for 47 years. Dr. Raymond was one of the most versatile men of the day; an able mining engineer; brilliant professional writer; an editor of the first rank and an acknowledged authority on matters of literary style; a creator in the fields of fiction, children's stories, poetry and music; for more than 50 years the superintendent of Plymouth Church Sunday School. He will be revered by thousands as a loyal friend, generous giver, and admired colleague. His passing marks an epoch in mining and metallurgical literature. A memorial service will he held in the Auditorium of the-Institute Headquarters on Monday, Feb. 17, 1919, at 4.30 P.M.

JAMAICA-bauxite and gypsum-but what else? J Does the Caribbean island have anything more to offer in the form of mineral wealth? One answer may be iron ore deposits which show enough promise to warrant exploitation in the near future by a company associated with Standard Ore & Alloys Corp. In addition, Jamaica is reported to have gold, silver, platinum, copper, lead, zinc, manganese, cobalt, and a great many nonmetallic minerals. Of these, only platinum has not been produced commercially in the past. Right now, Jamaican bauxite is getting most of the publicity, but not too long ago other mining operations were in progress. Lack of proper interest, insufficient roads, and scarcity of venture capital forced those mining properties to suspend production.

Longyear, who gave a most interesting talk about his work in exploring for coal on the islands of Spitzbergen, 400 miles north of the North Cape of Norway. The availability of a thorough, simple-to-use roof fall classification system is desirable for several reasons. First, such a system would expedite the reporting of falls for the purposes of estimating material removal costs, analyzing damage levels, and complying with federal regulations to report falls in certain areas of the mine. Adsorption of a nonionic polyacrylamide (PAM), an anionic polyacrylamide with sulfonate functional groups (PAMS), and a cationic polyacrylamide with amine functional groups (PAMD), on hematite was investigated as a function of different solution conditions. Adsorption results indicate that the major mechanisms of adsorption of polyacrylamides on hematite is through hydrogen bonding, with electrostatic forces playing a secondary role. All the polymers exhibited irreversibility of adsorption upon dilution. Also, entropic effects were determined to be important in adsorption. Surface chemical properties of hematite and solution chemistry of the polyacrylamides are considered to explain the polymer adsorption behavior on hematite.

THE carbon content of iron-silicon and of iron-manganese alloys at fixed activities of carbon has been reported previously.' It seemed desirable to investigate a system which allows a more extended range of alloy composition within a single phase region. The iron-nickel system is ideal in this respect, in that all alloys from 100 pct Fe to 100 pct Ni are face centered cubic ("austenitic") at 1000 °C. The experimental procedure was similar to that previously described.1,2 The alloys, in the form of pieces about 2 by 2 by 0.2 cm thick, together with a similar specimen of pure iron, were equilibrated with each of a series carbon monoxide-carbon dioxide tnixtures of fixed composition, quenched in the carburizing gas in the top of the furnace and then analyzed for carbon. It is a well-established fact that some ores do not reduce as readily in the furnace as others, thus seriously affecting out-put, and consequently, cost of product. With the object of obtain ing some information upon this subject, the following experi ments were made in the laboratory of the Buffalo Furnace Company. THE present note, which was given in the form of a Research in Progress item,' traces the origin of secondary recrystallization grains produced on annealing a cold rolled bicrystal specimen. The investigation began with the realization that a recently acquired conception for the origin of secondary grains produced on annealing cold rolled single-crystal specimens might require modifications for the case of polycrystalline materials. The stated conception2,3 begins with several conditions to be met by primary recrystallization: 1—a primary re-crystallization structure to consist of many small primaries and relatively few large primaries (diam- eters two or three times the average); 2—a primary recrystallization texture to consist of one strong preferred orientation or component and one or more weak components; and 3—a primary recrystalliza-tion structure-texture combination with some of the large primaries belonging to the weak components of the texture. One hundred and twenty miles of hard travel over steep ridges almost due east from Fayetteville, on the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad, about 100 miles from Eureka Hot Springs, or 75 miles northwest from Batesville, will bring the traveller to the waters of the Buffalo Fork of the White river, in a wild, thinlysettled, heavily-timbered country, now being prospected quite actively for zinc, and known as the Buffalo or Rush Creek district. Excepting here and there a piece of bottom land, patented before the discovery of zinc, the land is unoccupied Government land, and subject to entry under the United States mineral laws. Claims are now being taken, 600 by 1500 feet, but a movement made this summer, if successful, will largely modify the position of claim-holders. A few claims are now being filed under the Placer Act on the ground that as the zinc occurs as a horizontal, sedimentary deposit, etc., it can only be properly so classified. STEREOGRAPHIC projections of hcp metals depend upon the c/a ratio. Hu1 has recently published standard projections for titanium (c/a = 1.5873) of the (000l), the basal plane, the (1010), the most prominent slip plane, and the (1012), the most prominent twinning plane. Caplan et a1.2 and Hul have also published tables of angles between poles of planes, between directions, and between directions and poles of planes. From these tables standard projections and double stereograms can be constructed. However, by using the on-line CALCOMP plotter with a CDC 3800 computer, direct plots of standard stereographic projections of titanium (c/a = 1.587) have been made.

Over the years since 1956 when initial experiments were conducted on underground concreting in an attempt to cope with the ground weight and pressure encountered in the development of a large-scale underground block caving system, the use of monolithic concrete linings has grown to include most of the primary development in the mining area. Although the development cost of concrete linings is higher than either timber or steel-supported openings, the repair and maintenance costs are substantially lower, making concrete the most economical means of ground support. Other ad- vantages are also apparent, in that concrete provides superior fireproofing, better ventilation, and a safer, cleaner working place.

THE eccentric theodolite I exhibit is one constructed by the Stack-poles of New York, from drawings, considerably modified, of Combes's theodolite. The telescope is on one side of the horizontal limb, and the vertical circle is opposite to the telescope; thus they nearly balance each other, making already the construction lighter than in the instrument of Combes, where the telescope and vertical circle are together on the same side, and are both balanced by a considerable weight. The instrument stands upon three levelling screws or feet, an improvement upon the old or general style of mounting a transit on four feet-for indeed the instrument is easier levelled, and, more-over, stands more stable on three than on four points of support. The general advantage of an eccentric theodolite is evident, namely, that it can measure any and all vertical angles, from 0 to 360, without being interfered with by the horizontal limb as is the transit; besides this advantage, it needs no preparatory adjustment or correction for eccentricity ; on the other hand, however, that correction

WITH the advent of World War II, the need for agricultural products rose phenomenally and caused a similar increase in demand for plant foods of which phosphate rock is one of the more important raw materials. By the close of the war or shortly thereafter, all of the operating companies were expanding their production facilities. Many companies installed modern bulk material handling facilities. Designs varied, but were generally of the overhead trestle type of storing conveyors. American Cyanamid studied these various installations but was not satisfied with the conventional system because of high initial cost, increased maintenance problems in the way of painting structural steel that might be submerged in stored materials, and because of slightly increased operating costs. As a consequence of these economic analyses, conferences were held with the various conveyor manufacturers to develop a better method of storing and reclaiming. After considerable engineering study, one conveyor manufacturer suggested the unique system which was installed in 1950.
