In order that the reader may not be misled, I feel it necessary to comment upon the title of this paper. "Laws of Rock Behavior," one may take as being part of the all-embracing "Law of Nature" and this, according to the Oxford Dictionary, relates to the principles of conduct recognized as being pleasing to God. I feel it would be presumptuous to erect a code of rock behavior on this basis, so turn to a secondary definition, namely that a "Law" is that which is intrinsically reasonable. It is extremely unlikely that any group of geologists, or workers in rock mechanics would be in complete agreement about what could be taken to be "intrinsically reasonable." Therefore, this paper does not present any deified utterances, but rather deals with a few aspects of rock behavior which I consider to be intrinsically reasonable and with which I hope the reader will concur. The mode of behavior of rocks in the Earth's crust covers the range from wholly brittle to completely ductile ; with a deformation time scale which may be measured in milliseconds, for some events such as meteoritic impact, or in millions of years for the tectonic deformation involved in mountain building. A complete survey is, of course, outside the scope of an introductory paper, so I must be both brief and selective in my treatment. Any attempt to establish the mode of rock behavior in the Earth's crust should take into account data and relationships established in laboratory experiments and correlate these with field evidence. Consequently, the first section of this paper presents a brief discussion of the experimental aspects of rock mechanics which are pertinent to the subsequent discussion.

The series of earthquakes in the vicinity of Koyna Dam in south- western India, which included a very damaging magnitude 6.5 shock on Dec. 11, 1967 (Dec. 10 GMT), is of much interest. The events are exceptionally well documented, which is a tribute to Indian geologists, seismologists, and engineers. To help in disseminating the information in the United States, this chapter presents a brief summary of the pertinent data and lists references. Koynanagar (Koynatown), which began as the construction camp for the dam, is located about 140 miles southeast of Bombay and 70 miles south of Poona at 17.4ºN and 73.7ºE, about 40 miles inland from the Arabian Sea. Koyna River flows almost due south from its source a distance of about 38 miles and then makes an abrupt turn to the east and travels some 480 miles to empty into the Bay of Bengal. Koyna Dam is located about 3 miles north of this turn. The approximately north-south trending continental divide is a few miles west of Koyna and the terrain drops steeply about 1700 ft to where the hydroelectric generating station is located. The reservoir behind Koyna Dam forms a long, narrow lake (Shiva- jisagar Lake) with mean water level (MWL) at 2160-ft elevation. The 345-sq-mile watershed receives an annual rainfall of about 200 in., most of which falls between mid-June and mid-October. The peak storage is 99 x l09 cu ft. A controlled flow passes under the continental divide in a tunnel and then down to the electric generating station about 5 miles WNW of the dam. The inflow not used for power generation is released to Koyna River. The Koyna project is a major source of electric power for Bombay and produces 540 MW at peak load.

A NATIVE son of Salt Lake City. David Douglas Moffat has contributed greatly to both the mineral industries and civic progress in the State of Utah. He was born in 1880 and his whole life bas been intimately associated with mining and milling. His father, one of Utah's pioneer mining men, was superintendent of a mill at Park City. When Moffat was only 18 years of age he went to Philipsburg Mont., where he spent several years as a machinist, and later as master mechanic for the Granite Bi-Metallic Mining Co. He returned to Park City in 1903 as master mechanic and night mill foreman for the Ontario Silver Mining Co. After a few years of varied experience he became, in 1910. general foreman of the Boston Consolidated Will at Garfield, Utah.

LEAD stocks at the beginning of 1943 were comfortable when compared with those of other base metals such as copper, zinc and tin. This situation was early recognized by W.P.B. and other Governmental agencies and every effort was made to encourage the substitution of lead for these latter metals in all essential uses. Despite this apparently healthy condition, lead was not denied participation in the various measures inaugurated by the Government to relieve metal shortages. Thus in the Mexican trade agreement, effective Jan. 20, the tariff on two important classes of lead importss was halved. Similarly, in the setting up of B quota premiums, a B base was allotted to lead, with all pro¬duction above this figure receiving an additional payment of 2.75c. per lb., or a total payment of 11.75c. per lb. At about the same time it was announced that all quota transactions would be based upon the lead content as shown by the smelter settlement sheets. This basis was 86 percent of the lead content for all ores shipped to custom milling plants and 95 per cent for ores and concentrates shipped to custom smelting plants. The importance of this action can be appreciated when in the Coeur d'Alene it was estimated as equivalent to a 5 per cent increase compared to the previous base.

THE John Fritz Gold Medal for 1929 was presented to Herbert Hoover at the Executive Mansion on April 25, at a luncheon given by Mr. Hoover to present and past members of the Board of Award, preceding medalists, and presidents and secretaries of the American societies of Civil, Mining and Metallurgical, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineers. The presentation party of forty engineers which gathered at the White House, from all parts of the United States, was made up of past presidents of the four senior national engineering societies that established the John Fritz Medal and included five men who had received the medal in previous years. These former medalists were Edward Dean Adams, J. J. Carty, J. Waldo Smith, Elmer A. Sperry and Ambrose Swasey. This medal is the highest honor bestowed by these four national engineering societies, having a membership of 60,000. It is awarded not oftener than annually for "notable scientific or industrial achievement, without restriction on account of nationality or sex." In accordance with custom, the award to Mr. Hoover was made tentatively and without announcement in October, 1927, and was formally con- firmed and announced one year later.

Payloader The Frank G. Hough Co. has made available another four-wheel drive tractor-shovel. It has a 1 cu-yd bucket with 60 hp Diesel or 54 hp gasoline power optional. The use of large pneumatic tires, same size all around, and drive on all four wheels gives this new Payloader traction to work effectively in sand, mud and snow, and travel on pavements with- [ ] out injuring the surface. Rear wheel steer with power booster plus short wheel base makes it easy to operate and highly maneuverable. Four speeds in both directions insure fast travel speeds for transport and fast operating speeds on shuttle loading or similar operations. The least work analysis of constrained deformation, first proposed by Taylor and recently modified by Chin, Hosford, and Mendorf to include twinning, has been applied to the problem of axisynmetric flow. Calculations were made, for the case of (111}(110) slip and {111}(112) twinning applicable to fcc deformation. The solutions were obtained by linear programming techniques and with the aid of computer methods. The results show that in axisymnzetric tension the onset of twinning tends to decrease the plastic strength anisotropy as compared with the case of defortnation by slip alone. In compression, however, the strength anisotropy is increased as a result of twinning. The [100] and 11111 orientations and their vicinity are unfavorable for twinning in tension and compression, respecticely. With slight modifications, the present results may be applied to bcc metals deform ing by {110}(111j slip and (112} (111) twinning. Implications of present results to wire texture development of low stacking fault energy fcc materials arc discussed. PREVIOUSLY we' have applied linear programming techniques to obtain solutions to Taylor's least work analysis2 of constrained deformation of single crystals undergoing axisymmetric flow, such as occurs in an axially loaded polycrystalline aggregate. These solutions yielded values of the parameter M = o/.r = Y/w which relates the external stress-strain (u-c) curve to the shear stress-shear strain (7-y) curve for the crystal. The value of M is dependent on crystal orientation and hence enters significantly in texture strengthening considerations.3'4 Recently the Taylor hypothesis was modified by Chin, Hosford, and Mendorf' to include mechanical twinning. The latter has now been applied to the problem of axisymmetric flow and the results are reported in this paper. Calculations have been made for {111 )( 110) slip and {111 )(112) twinning applicable to fcc crystals. With minor changes in the indices of the slip and twin systems, the present results are also applicable to bcc crystals which slip on (110) (111) and twin on {112)(111) systems.

The physical composition of coal and the distribution of its physical constituents will partially determine the efficiency of the process chosen for coal preparation. Distribution and concentration of coal macerals will, to a degree, be controlled by preparation processes. A number of preparation processes have been evaluated to determine this interrelation. These evaluations will help provide information needed for the production of coal that meets definite petrographic composition specifications. etrographic composition and degree of coalifica-tion of coal can determine the choice of cleaning processes and equipment used in coal preparation. The purpose of this paper is to present data on studies of the preparation processes of breakage, sizing, cleaning, and blending and to show the effect coal's petrographic composition has on these processes. Herrin (No. 6) and Danville (No. 7) Coals from Illinois were used in these tests. Nomenclature used herein is that approved in the Glossary of the International Committee for Coal Petrology,' based primarily on the Stopes-Heerlen system of classification2 and used in coal petrography laboratories throughout the world. BREAKAGE TESTS Breakage tests of Illinois coals related to petrographic composition have been conducted at various times at the Illinois State Geological Survey. These tests have been classified under two headings -impact tests and compression tests. Impact tests, as the name implies, consisted of breaking the coal by a sharp, sudden force. Impact tests were further divided into fall tests and block tests. Compression tests consisted of applying a constant pressure on a piece of coal until the coal fractured.

J. B. Haffner, or "Barney" as he is known to his wide circle of friends, was born at Landskrona, Sweden, on Christmas Day, 1886. He attended grade and preparatory schools there and then went to the Royal Technical Institute at Stockholm from which he graduated as a mining engineer in 1910. During these school years he gained practical experience in his summer vacations by working in various mines in Sweden and other European countries. Upon graduation he set forth for the land of opportunity, the United States. Upon arrival in this country he found people everywhere talking about the fabulous gold fields in Alaska and thereupon set sail for Nome, to take part in placer gold mining operations. Returning to the States, Barney worked in Illinois coal mines for a time and then carried on some construction work in Oklahoma. T. E. Leontis (The Dow Chemical Co., Midland, Mich.)—This paper is of particular interest to me because of my own work with F. N. Rhines on the oxidation of magnesium and magnesium alloys a few years ago. The authors are to be complimented on their development of an accurate and reproducible technique for measuring ignition temperatures and on their comprehensive study of the many variables that affect the ignition temperature of magnesium. It is indeed gratifying to see that they have obtained a good correlation between ignition temperatures and the oxidation rates reported by us. The correlation is valid not only with composition within one alloy system but also between alloy systems; that is, alloying elements which effect the greatest increase in oxidation rate also produce the greatest decrease in ignition temperature. There are a few points upon which I would like to comment. In attempting to correlate ignition-temperature data, one must be sure that the same definition of this quantity is used by all investigators. It does not appear to me that such is the case in the authors' comparison of their data with the theoretically calculated values of Eyring and Zwolinski. The equation derived by these investigators defines the ignition temperature, To, as the temperature at the gadoxide interface, whereas the present authors use the metal temperature as the criterion for ignition. The contradiction in the effect of oxide-scale thickness on ignition temperature between the predictions of the Eyring-Zwolinski equation and the observations reported in this paper indicate that some variable has not been taken into consideration. Could that be the geometry and size of the specimen? There is a marked difference in the type of specimen used in this investigation and that used in our work which formed the basis of Eyring and Zwol-inski's theoretical treatment. Another factor which plays an important role in ignition is the vapor pressure or the rate of vaporization. Combustion can safely be assumed to take place in the vapor phase by the reaction between vaporized magnesium and oxygen. Thus, a more accurate theoretical analysis may be made on the basis of the rate of vaporization which may be the controlling rate of the process. The effect of a large number of alloying elements on the ignition temperature has been reported in this paper, but beryllium was not included. Practical experience dictates that beryllium markedly decreases the burning tendency of magnesium. I was wondering if the authors plan to study the effect of beryllium in their future work. The authors predict that concentrations of sulphur dioxide in the furnace atmosphere greater than 5.8 pct would be expected to increase the ignition temperature to values still higher than those they measured. I would like to mention that large concentrations of sulphur dioxide markedly increase the rate of combustion of magnesium once ignition has started. Although it has been shown in the paper that the ignition temperature of magnesium in oxygen increases with increasing sulphur dioxide content up to about 1 to 2 pct, in practice relatively low-melting commercial cast alloys (AZ63A and AZ92A) are being continuously heat treated at temperatures just below the melting point in air containing 0.5 to 0.75 pct SO*. In regard to the change in color of the oxide scale observed on magnesium and magnesium alloys just prior to ignition, I would like to mention that in our work alloying elements were found to color the usually white magnesium oxide even though ignition did not occur. For example, the oxide formed on Mg-A1 alloys was gray, increasing in intensity with aluminum content in the alloy. Finally, I might suggest that the authors indicate their source of the value of 0.8 g per cc for the density of MgO as it is formed on magnesium upon oxidation at elevated temperatures. W. M. Fassell, Jr. (authors' reply)—The comments by Dr. Leontis are very excellent ones and I will attempt to answer them in order. First, the problem of ignition of magnesium is a rather difficult one since many factors are involved. Concerning the comparison of the To in the Eyring-Zwolinski equation, eq 4, with the experimentally determined values, it will be noted that the calculated and experimental values of the ignition temperature in Table I are not self-consistent. In the case of the 1.78 pct A1-Mg alloy the calculated value is 49°C below the experimental value; for the 3.81 pct A1-Mg alloy, 122°C below the experimental value; for Mg with 5x10-' cm film, 19°C above the experimental value; for Mg with 2x10-I cm film, 28 °C below the experimental value. Thus, if it were merely a matter of difference of location of temperature measurement the calculated ignition temperature would always be below the experimental value, the difference being due to the thermal gradient through the oxide film. The possibility of a thermal gradient in the magnesium metal must be considered. From Carslaw and Jaeger,'Y t can be shown that the maximum temperature gradient that could exist between the oxide-metal interface and the center of the sample is of the order of O.Ol°C. The geometry and size of the specimen could certainly have some effect on the ignition temperature. The equation for ignition that has been proposed in reference 14 is of the following type containing terms to account for this and other factors: M dT AHv(T) =Cp--------------\-J(.T—TB) + ZAHl-M A dx where AH is the heat of reaction, v(T) is the velocity of the reaction at temperature, Cp is the heat capacity of sample, M is the mass of sample, A is the area of sample, t is time, J is the total coefficient of heat transfer outward from the reaction zone, TR is the temperature of the bath or furnace, and AH,, is the heat associated with any phase change involved. Prior to the instant of ignition, the vapor pressure of magnesium is of no special significance. After ignition, neither eq 4 nor the above equation is applicable. The actual combination of magnesium cannot safely be assumed to take place in the vapor phase. While experimental data is lacking to support a hypothesis that ignition does or does not occur in the vapor phase, some observation on the pressure ignition experiments may be of interest. At high oxygen pressures, once ignition has occurred, the reaction of magnesium with oxygen approaches near explosive violence, the entire sample being consumed in probably less than 1 sec. At atmospheric pressure it usually requires 15 to 20 sec. Thus it appears that the oxygen concentration becomes the rate determining factor. Further, if burning magnesium is observed through darkened glass (Lincoln Super-visibility Shade No. 12) the magnesium sample is very much hotter than the "smoke" and the outline of the sample is retained perfectly. No "flame" is visible above the metal. No work was done on Mg-Be alloys. We do, however, intend to study this problem in the near future.

I. INTRODUCTION. THE mineral gypsum, CaSO, + 2 H2O, has been used for many years as a sulphurizing and basic flux in several smelting¬operations. Thus, in smelting oxide nickel-ore in the blast furnace, it is commonly added to the charge to furnish the sulphur necessary for collecting the metal in a matte, and a base for slagging the siliceous gangue. In the concentration of lead-copper matte in the reverberatory furnace it has been used for years at Freiberg, Saxony1 for a similar purpose, and for producing at the same time a copper-matte with less than 0.15 per cent. Fe. The latest use gypsum has been put to is in the blast-roasting process of Carmichael-Bradford.2 The term "blast-roasting," given by A. S. Dwight3 to the Dwight-Lloyd method of roasting and agglomerating ,I is a happy generic term which covers the ground better than the " lime-roasting" of Ingalls' or the " pot-roasting " of Austin,6 in that it leaves the operation independent of the character of the flux and the form of apparatus, and retains the characteristic feature of this class of processes-namely, that of using forced draft. In the Carmichael-Bradford process the dehydrated material, mixed with galena-concentrate, acts as a diluent and a flux. The process differs in this from the Huntington-Heberlein7 and the Savelsberg8 processes, in both of which limestone is used.

There are many inconsistencies and gaps in available information concerning the mechanism whereby dodecylamine acts as a collector for quartz. The author compares the studies which have been made in correlating the contact angle with adsorption density on quartz over all pH ranges, and attempts to resolve some of the inconsistencies. In recent years much information has been obtained concerning the mechanism whereby dodecylamine acts as a collector for quartz. Fuerstenau,1 for ex- ample, has shown that adsorption density and zeta potential under some conditions, at least, can be correlated with contact angle and flotation rate. There appear, however, to be several inconsistencies and gaps in information available. One inconsistency involves trying to correlate contact angle with adsorption density on quartz over all pH ranges. Fuerstenau's correlation at a collector concentration of 4x10-5 moles per liter dodecylamine acetate and about pH 10 shows a contact angle of about 80 degrees occurring at approximately monolayer coverage. If Gaudin and Morrow's2 and Morrow's3 contact angle data for near neutrality (pH 6 to 7) are now compared with deBruyn's4,5 adsorption data on quartz in a similar pH range, it will be noticed that a contact angle of 38 to 40 degrees corresponds to complete monolayer coverage (at an amine concentration of approximately 10"3 molar). Since 1964, the Dept. of Mining at The Pennsylvania State University has been carrying out extensive studies associated with the phenomena of microseismic activity and inelastic behavior in geologic materials. Briefly, the program to date has involved the following stages 1) Study of the microseismic noise and energy rates for selected geologic materials under incremental, uniaxial tension.1,2 2) Investigation of the frequency spectra of microseismic activity of selected geologic materials under incremental, uniaxial tension.3,4 3) Investigation of the time-dependent inelastic deformation of geologic materials and the analysis of such deformation in terms of mechanical models.5, 6 4) Simultaneous study of microseismic activity and time-dependent inelastic deformation in geologic materials under incremental, uniaxial compression.7,8 Details of the research involved in stage 4 of the program constitute the subject of this chapter. It should be noted that the majority of the experimental data quoted in this chapter forms part of a thesis to be presented by one of the authors (Kim) in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Ph.D. degree in mining engineering at The Pennsylvania State University. During the last two or three years, a number of important papers have been published which deal primarily with the fundamental structure and mechanical behavior of geologic materials. The recent miners' strike in Pennsylvania, which resulted in a scarce and irregular supply of coal at a high price, has advanced the possibilities for briquetting, and as a consequence public interest has grown rapidly. THE spheroidal form of the temper carbon nodules in malleable cast iron and of the graphite mottles of "mottled" cast iron suggests that in both all the graphite in a given mottle or nodule grew from a single center of crystallization or nucleus.? There is, however, a distinct metallo-graphic difference between the mottle and the nodule; the area of mother metal impoverished in combined carbon by the crystallization of graphite in a mottle is practically coextensive with the ramifications of the graphite, while the impoverished zone of metal corresponding to a given nodule is always larger, and usually much larger, than the approximately spherical mass of graphite crystals forming the nodules. Furthermore, the mottle probably is formed during freezing and the nodule almost always at a considerably lower temperature. Assuming that the nodules or mottles can be used as a measure of the existing nuclei, (capable of germination) we propose to record certain observations as to the graphitizing reaction in the light of the number and habits of growth of these nuclei. The present authors, in cooperation with others1-7, have reported upon various cognate aspects of the problem. The fact that temper carbon is a mass of flakes and not a solid granule has become well recog-nized since the introduction of an improved polishing technique8,9,10 for cast iron. In planning and designing of underground excavations and construction, it is of considerable importance that the stresses and displacements in the rock mass subjected to arbitrary sequences of unloading and loading be within allowable limits. For determination of the stress and displacement fields, the usual approach is to treat the rock as an elastic material and to apply the principles of the theory of elasticity. However, analytic solutions are available only for a limited class of problems of simple geometry and idealized material properties. Nonhomogeneity and anisotropy of material coupled with complex geometrical configuration and initial stress fields that are almost always preexistent in rock masses at great depths, render the problem intractable by analytical methods. Approximate solution techniques using numerical procedures have, therefore, to be resorted to. The finite element method as applied to plane stress analysis was introduced by Clough.1 It has developed into a powerful tool for the analysis of various field problems in structural and continuum mechanics. The method is well documented in the literature2-6 and, therefore, its historical development will not be discussed here. Wilson's analysis of the plane stress/strain problem has found extensive use in the area of soil and rock mechanics including stresses around underground openings; stresses and displacements in dams, foundations, etc.7-11 In his analysis of the axisymmetric solid,3 Wilson proposed a procedure to allow for certain cases of nonlinear material properties. THE Sunrise iron mine of The Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation is in Platte County, Wyoming, about 110 miles north of Cheyenne. It is served by the company-owned Colorado and Wyoming Railway, which connects with the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy and the Colorado and Southern railways at Guernsey, Wyoming, a distance of 6 miles from the mine. The original Sunrise claims were staked mainly by United States Army officers and soldiers stationed at old Fort Laramie, because of small showings of copper in the Carboniferous limestones that form a horizontal capping overlying the Huronian iron ore. A small copper smelter was operated for about three years at Fairbanks, now an aban-doned town on the North Platte River. As many of the copper shafts and test pits near the present Sunrise mine were deepened, they pene-trated the capping and encountered iron. ore or gray sericitic schist, and were abandoned. Evidence of an early interest in iron ore was found when the Chicago claim was stripped for mining. A narrow, winding crevice was dis-covered, which led downward 20 ft. through the capping to the underlying soft red hematite, in which a room 10 by 14 by 7 ft. had been excavated. Stone hammers and wedges and a few rusted pieces of iron were found on the floor, and the evidence is conclusive that the excavation was used up to rather recent times by Sioux Indian medicine men, to provide war paint.

THE object of this paper is to record and interpret field and laboratory observations made by the writers during five years of study of the barite deposits of North Carolina. Deposits of barite are known to occur in three localities in North Carolina (Fig. 1) two of which-the Hot Springs and Kings Mountain -contain material of economic value. The Hot Springs area begins near Bluff, some 6 miles south of Hot Springs, and continues northeast by Stackhouse; a total length of 7 miles. The Kings Mountain deposits lie along a belt that extends from the north end of Crowders Mountain in a southwestward direction, along the east side of this and Kings Mountain, to Kings Creek, South Carolina. The third locality is 3 1/2 miles southeast of Hillsboro, Orange County, a short distance west of the highway leading from Hillsboro to Chapel Hill. It is not known when barite was first discovered in North Carolina, but production from the Hot Springs area began some 50 years ago. The state has never produced large quantities of barite-usually there have been less than three producers-and definite figures are not available, but reasonably reliable estimates indicate a total production of 300,000 tons. From 1901 through 1920 barite mining was on a seemingly prosperous basis and a large tonnage. was shipped from the Hot Springs and Kings Mountain areas. With the depression of 1920 the industry began to decline and production practically ceased in 1926.

WITHIN the past few years, particularly because of the rapid growth of the airplane industry during the war, considerable attention has been paid to the manufacture of light-wall cold-drawn seamless and welded steel tubing for structural purposes. While the manufacture of such tubing is not, in itself, a difficult matter, some difficulties have. been encountered in producing the same under specifications requiring definite physical properties. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the methods of manufacture and the properties that may be obtained by such methods for tubing coming within about ½ to 2 in. (12.7 to 50.8 mm.) outside diameter and 10 to 22 Birmingham wire gage (0.134 to 0.028 in. wall thickness). Such tubing is largely used as structural material in the aircraft industry, and it is of the utmost importance that the physical and chemical properties should be known, and also that the various factors entering into the manufacture should be under such control as to allow these properties to be varied and held within definite limits. In general, tubing may be divided into four classes: namely, specialty tubing, such as riveted-sheet or plate, lock jointed, etc.; brazed tubing; welded tubing; and seamless tubing. Welded tubing may be divided into hot product, such as lap welded and butt, welded, and cold product, such as acetylene and electric welded. Seamless tubing may be hot rolled or cold drawn.
