During the last several years many papers have appeared dealing with the structure of highly polished metal surfaces. The awakening of interest in this subject is due to the applicability of the electron diffraction technique to the study of surfaces. The original theory of Beilbyl considered the surface of polished metals as of the nature of a supercooled liquid or a vitreous, amorphous solid. The electron diffraction effects from polished metals have been interpreted by rnany to be a direct experimental proof of the correctness of the Beilby theory. This interpretation has been strongly opposed by others, so that at the present time the subject is in an uncertain and controversial state. In the present paper new, and hitherto unpublished, electron diffraction effects from polished zinc are desrribed. These observations indicate that the polished surface of zinc is crystalline. Published Work Many papers2""10 have interpreted the electron diffraction evidence as proof of the Beilby amorphous theory. All investigators agree that highly polished metals give rise to two diffuse diffraction haloes, similar to those obtained by the diffraction of X-rays in liquids and vitreous solids. It is this similarity that leads to the amorphous-layer interpretation of polished metals. Strangely, the interatomic distances calculated from these haloes are very similar for the various metals investigated, in spite of a rather wide range of such distances in the crystalline and liquid states. The calculated atomic sizes are, furthermore, smaller than are experienced in the normal states of the metals. In spite of these anomalies, the amorphous-layer interpretation has been adhered to by many. One investigator, S. Dobinski," differs from the others in his experimental results. By polishing under benzene in order to avoid the possibility of oxidation, Dobinski obtains diffuse haloes of radii different from those previously obtained. He thus obtains a more rational quantitative correlation of the diffuse haloes with the amorphous-layer theory.

A number of investigators have noted the importance of various precipitation reactions on the properties of commercial-purity beryllium.1-5 Carrabine, for example, has demonstrated the interaction of iron and aluminum on the mechanical properties of hot-pressed polycrystalline beryllium.6 He considered the determining factor on elevated-temperature properties to be a reversible AlFeBe, precipitation reaction which could be directly related to the Fe/Al impurity ratio of the beryllium. Any aluminum in excess of the stoichio-metric amount required to form A1FeBe4 was presumed to remain primarily in the grain boundaries. We have observed, by transmission electron microscopy, such a grain boundary effect after various heat treatments of beryllium sheet. The starting material in this investigation was bare-rolled beryllium ingot sheet (0.001 to 0.005 in. thick), in contrast to the hot-pressed powder utilized by Carra-bine. It should be noted from the ingot sheet analysis shown in Table I that the Fe/Al weight ratio was near unity which would provide some free aluminum although the total aluminum and iron content was still small. Fig. l(a) shows some aluminum or aluminum-rich precipitates in the grain boundaries of a beryllium foil which had been quenched from 1200°C into brine at -TPC. Similar grain boundary precipitates were found, particularly at grain boundary intersections, in other samples quenched from 1100° and 1000°C. The length of annealing time at these elevated temperatures did not appear to substantially alter the amount of grain boundary precipitates, thus attesting to their relative insolubility. The problem of drying ores is one that most mill-engvineers are sooner or later called upon to meet, and it may be timely to point out some of the difficulties resulting from such operations from purely a metallurgical and economic standpoint. We mean, in the following pages, to discuss primarily the effect of such operations on the ore. itself, without particular reference to the mechanical or cost features of the subject. That an appreciable tonnage of the ore fed to the usual form of drier, either rotary or stack, is lost, is fairly well appreciated, but we believe that only a few mill-managers know just what their drier-losses amouilt to, and we have found that in most cases they console themselves with the fact that the drier-smoke is not very much discolored, and it is generally believed that the draft is not sufficient to carry away more than a negligible percentage of the values.

IN view of the many articles that have been written on the proper classification of mining systems without so far having produced any particular tangible results it might seem that the subject is hopeless of solution. I do not believe that is so, and my intention in contributing the following outline is to present a slightly different viewpoint. Too much attention is often focused on unnecessary details and not enough on general principles. Too much attention and emphasis is often given to the system employed at one particular mine or in one particular district. In addition, names that are entirely misleading are applied to mining systems, and their adoption by the coming generation perpetuates a condition that needs clarification badly. The following classification is the result of several years of practical experience in mining and also several years' practice in teaching the same subject. It therefore represents a broad picture of the entire field of mining systems from the viewpoint of the miner as well as the teacher. It seems that the difficulty in the past has been in reconciling these two viewpoints. The need of such a reconciliation requires no explanation.

BASIC U. S. Patent 1,487,145 on ammonia leaching of nickel ores was issued to the author on March 18, 1924. Equivalent patents in other countries were obtained later. The Dutch Syndicate Brikcarbo became interested in the process in 1935; and a couple of years later the late Dr. H. Foster Bain sent samples of Surigao laterite iron ore to Delft and witnessed tests made there on this material for the Philippines Commonwealth. As a result, the author was asked in April 1940 by Dr. Bain to go to the Philippines to erect and take charge of a pilot plant for the process. The World War prevented carrying out this proposal. The Dorr Co. also became interested in the process at about the same period. The investigations by the Freeport Sulphur Co. on the process as applied to the Cuban nickeliferous laterites, which resulted in the Nicaro enterprise, and the results of this operation have been well described elsewhere.1,²,³,4,5 This Nicaro plant was, in operation for almost two years, and during this period produced about 10 pct of the world nickel production from laterites containing 1.35 pct nickel. This plant and its operation were war measures and, in view of this, activities were suspended in April 1947. The results obtained fully demonstrated the technical feasibility of the process and its economical aspects on a commercial scale. In this respect, it should be understood that it is probable that improvements may be made by further development, and that there are possibilities for advantageous application of the process to garnierite and similar ores with higher values in nickel than the laterite iron ores at Nicaro. While the articles cited above have given a certain amount of information, no general article containing all the important process data has been pub- lished. Since the process is of more than local interest, a fuller knowledge of the fundamental and practical factors of the method may be welcome to those interested in this new field of metals technology. The author, accordingly, takes pleasure in submitting this article to the AIME as it represents in a condensed form the results of many years of research. The brief outlines of the fundamental and other factors and the explanation of observed phenomena are presented with as little discussion of details as possible, consistent with clarity. It is a special satisfaction to the author to make some contribution of his own in return for the benefits of the many valuable publications issued by the Institute during his thirty years of membership. Ores Adapted for Ammonia Leaching: All nickel and cobalt ores which originate from weathering of peridotites or similar basic rocks having sufficient values are suitable for treatment by the ammonia leaching process after a preliminary reduction under proper conditions. The formation of these deposits was probably as follows: In the course of time the basic rocks were attacked by atmospheric agencies; MgO and SiO2 were gradually leached out, and secondary nickel minerals formed, such as garnierite, a hydrated silicate of nickel and magnesia. These secondary products are, however, not stable. They decompose in a further stage of weathering and ultimately only a relatively small residue of insoluble oxides remains, known as laterite iron ore with a small nickel content and very little cobalt. Under these mantles of laterite, richer nickel values may be found, usually indicated by the occurrence of garnierite. The more the ore is disintegrated by nature, the higher the iron content and the better the nickel extractions that may be expected therefrom. Table I shows extractions that may be expected from different types of ores, assuming treatment of -200 mesh products and that all precautions have been taken for obtaining maximum extractions. THE hoisting equipment selected for use at the Hecla mine in 1907 was one of the first Ilgner type Ward-Leonard controlled hoists put into ser- vice. Development of the Hecla below the 2000-ft. level, which is the ultimate depth of the old equipment, and the additional service required by the "Star," necessitated additional hoisting capacity. It will be our endeavor to give j70u a brief summary of the engineering which determined the selection of the new equipment. The engineer in making his decision as to size, speed, etc., must .make a duty study approximating as closely &s possible the actual opePating conditions which will eventually result. Primarily, it is necessary to know what work must be done. The amount of material which must be hoisted under the maximum condition, as well as its distribution from the various levels of the mine was carefully studied by the mining engineering department, as the ore reserves, their relative-position and the probable method of working them had to be considered. The final figures reached, taking into consideration four different operating conditions, were, in tons per day, as follows:

The Hobson uranium deposit is located in Karnes County, Texas, along the prominent south Texas uranium trend. The uranium mineralization occurs in the Deweesville Sandstone of the Whitsett Formation of the Eocene Jackson Group. The host rock is a friable, fine-grained, well-sorted, highly porous and permeable sandstone interpreted to be an ancient beach deposit. The sandstone contains significant volcanic constituents and ranges in composition from arkosic to tuffaceous. Locally, the host sandstone contains hard, dense opal cement. Bentonitic shales underlie and overlie the mineralized sandstone unit. Geometrically, the Hobson uranium-bearing zone resembles an elongated roll front type deposit. Chemical uranium values compared with gamma ray equivalent uranium values indicate that the uranium has been dissolved from the updip side and precipitated on the down- dip side of the roll front. Details of the uranium mineralization were studied using thin section microscopy, autoradiography, x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) techniques. The uranium mineralization occurs in the pores of the sandstone, as grain coatings and as replacement of sand-size and smaller grains. It is commonly associated with pyrite and other opaque minerals. Other favored hosts for uranium (other than pore openings) appear to be clay aggregates, altered rock and glass fragments, and carbonaceous plant debris. Aggregates of coffinite were identified by XRD and SEM/EDS analyses. Some uranium mineralization also appears to be dispersed and is postulated to be adsorbed on the clay and carbonaceous matter.

THE practice of introducing acid into oil wells to increase production of oil and gas has been in use since 1894, when it was first used in the Pennsylvania. oil fields30.? It is only since 1928 that it has been used to any extent in the Mid-Continent18. The process has proved successful in increasing production, at least temporarily, in depleted oil fields where the producing formation is highly calcareous and where water drive is not too pronounced. In the Zwolle field in Louisiana, where the producing horizon is a chalk, increases of 100 per cent have been recorded25. In north-central Texas, where the oil is produced from the Marble Falls limestone, equally pronounced increases have resulted3. The production also in some fields yielding oil from quartz sand cemented with calcite has been benefited. The evidence of actual increase in total recovery of oil, however, has been questioned by some engineers18. It has been pointed out that the results of the treatment of a well in a new district, where the process has never been tried out, can never be predicted with certainty, since other factors besides percentage of calcareous content: of the oil sand play a large part in determining the success of the method. Numerous articles have been published on acid treatment and on the effects of acid on limestone1-35, yet very little has been written con-cerning experimental work on the actual effect, of acid on capillary pores and larger oil-coated voids of oil sands. This is due partly to difficulties in duplicating field conditions in a laboratory and partly to the fact that the process has been carried out largely by contracting companies that have been unwilling to publish details of their results for fear of loss of business to competitors. The tensile behaviors of the CsCl structure compound AgMg are extensively documented in terms of strain, strain rate, temperature, composition, and metallurgical processing treatment. The observations lend themselves to presentation in terns of three regimes of deformation behavior; 1) low temperatures where deformation is primarily by slip; 2) intermediate temperatures where the deformation mode is also slip but with the detailed behavior dominated by dislocation interactions with solute atoms; 3) high temperatures where defomation is primarily by diffusion controlled processes. Of all the material groups of potential interest as high-temperature structural materials, the inter-metallics have been the least studied, particularly with respect to their mechanical behavior. Moreover, the application and processing of intermetallics for uses which exploit their often unique physical properties have been impeded by a lack of understanding of their mechanical properties. Previous work in this area* has been largely *For a recent review, see Westbrook.' exploratory, aimed on the one hand at the direct empirical development of materials of engineering utility and ,on the other at identification of the important parameters affecting the mechanical behavior of inter metallics. As a consequence, there has not been available, heretofore—for any inter-metallic—data, sufficient in extent or precision to provide an adequate phenomenological description of the effects of metallurgical variables on deformation behavior. Such documentation is prerequisite to intelligent application or processing design and is also necessary for testing present and future theoretical analyses of mechanical behavior. It was therefore an objective of the present investigation to document the deformation behavior of a simple ordered intermetallic over as wide a range as possible of all the usual metallurgical variables. The compound AgMg was chosen as the subject of this investigation because it met all of a group of desired criteria, namely: 1) congruent but moderate melting point; 2) simple crystal structure; 3) ordered structure persisting to the melting point; 4) broad solubilities for the component elements. AN often repeated criticism of the profession of engineering is that it is as a whole it lacks solidarity. organization, co-ordination, and leadership. Significantly, the critic, are all engineers. Other members of the body politic either do not know about the absence of organization or they do not care. If engineers have no organization they have a plethora of organizations. There exist in the United State, today some 350 societies. institutes. clubs, associations, and councils of engineers and engineering technologists and this number excludes several hundred local chapters of national societies. trade associations, and local engineers' clubs of purely social character- Successful engineers must be proficient in analyzing, planning, and co-ordinating. but it is generally admitted that for their profession as a whole their success in this respect has been indifferent.

Though air jets occupy only a minor role in the ventilation of mines and other enclosures, their importance in this respect is greater than is commonly recognized and may be considerably increased as our conception of their modes of operation becomes clearer. The object of this paper is to discuss some of the ways in which air jets are involved in mine ventilation and some possible applications to the ventilation of mines and other enclosed spaces. The mention of air jets ordinarily suggests the use of some form of an air injector, such as the Venturi blower occasionally used for auxiliary ventilation in mines, or the Saccardo (injector) system used to a limited extent for ventilating railroad tunnels. Actually, the term covers such common phenomena as the discharge of air from fan pipes and coal-mine line brattices, and even from smoke stacks and fans. A knowledge of the general mode of air entrainment by jets also helps to explain certain phenomena—some mine-gas explosions, for instance—that otherwise would remain obscure. Jet action has been involved in three recent series of Bureau of Mines experi-ments in which the author has participated: experiments on fan-pipe discharge, On the dilution of gases discharged from a stack and On the ventilation of a ship's hold. Available data on the discharge of jets into large openings and on the design and performance of air injectors have been analyzed in considerable detail and supplementary experiments are planned for after the war. The results of the fan-pipe experiments have been combined with the analyses of data on jet discharge into large spaces, and have been published.' The results of the stack-gas dilution tests, which refer to a jet discharged into a crosswind, have also been published2 and a paper on the design and performance of injectors has been prepared for publication.3 These technical experiments and analyses form the background and the documented evidence for the following nontechnical discussion of the use of air jets in mine ventilation. Jet Characteristics The jets commonly encountered are those in which the air is in turbulent— as opposed to laminar, or streamline-— motion. The characteristics under discussion apply only to such turbulent jets and have their basis in theories of the mixing of turbulent air currents. Such jets have basic characteristics that are present, though variable in form, regardless of whether the jet expands freely in space, whether the expansion is limited by adjacent walls, or whether the jet propels air through a flow circuit. They expand at definite angles and entrain the surrounding air, even though the entrained air must be obtained by recirculation of their own air streams. As the quantity of air in motion in the mixed stream increases, the average velocity of the stream decreases.

The recent installation of a high-pressure propeller type fan at the Moose shaft of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. at Butte, Mont,., is of interest on account of novelty of design and also because an appreciable saving was made over the cost of a reversible centrifugal fan such as is ordinarily used where a high pressure is required. The lower cost is due solely to the fact that by means of controls on the power supplied to the three-phase, alternating-current, induction motor, directly connected to the propeller it is possible to reverse the direction of rotation of the propeller and thus reverse the direction of air flow. The extra air ducts and reversing doors required for this purpose with centrifugal fans are not necessary, and their elimination greatly reduces these construction charges, which form a great part of the total expense. The Badger State mine for which the Moose shaft is used as the main outlet air course is now being developed to the 4100-ft. level. The old centrifugal fan, formerly used at the collar of the shaft, was installed 15 years ago at a time when most of the stoping was being done above the 2400-ft. level, and when the temperature of the rock was much lower than it is now on the bottom levels recently opened. The old fan, therefore, became inadequate to maintain desirable ventilation conditions, on account of the increase in resistance to air flow incident to the greater depth of the mine workings and because a much larger volume of air is required to offset the higher rock temperatures. Propeller, or disk, fans commonly used in the ventilation of mines are not suited to high-pressure work, but economies in the cost of their installation have long been recognized. In South Africa use has been made of a number of propellers placed in series along a common shaft, the number of propellers used being varied with requirements for meeting different conditions of mine resistance, but the mechanical efficiency is described as being low. In Butte, experimental work was done by the writer along similar lines under somewhat different conditions, but with poor results as to both pressure capacity and mechanical efficiency. Tests were also made of two different types of propeller fans of moderate size, which were said by the manufacturers to be suited to high-pressure mine ventilation.

This paper concerns the induction and extension of fractures into rock formations as involved in drilling, completing, and production stimulating operations on wells. Conclusions concerning formation breakdown are derived from (I) a review and extension of published analyses relating to mechanical theories of rock stress and the state of stress in the earth's crust and (2) a correlation of field data from fracturing operations. Conclusions concerning the mechanics of fracture extension, which indicate the relationship between fracture dimensions and rock properties, depth, and volume of injected fluid, are tentative and largely establish limits of relationships. These conclusions are derived from stress calculations, limited field data, and laboratory experimental studies. The experimental work involves the study of the stresses at the fracture boundaries and the geometry of pressurized fractures by means of photo-elastic modeling methods. Results of this investigation indicate that a large majority of pressure induced wellbore fractures are vertical, particularly in deeper wells; and variations in the pressures necessary to create and extend fractures can be explained largely on a basis of established rock properties. It is also shown that variations due to tectonic forces should usually be expected to be slight. Other results indicate that during that extension of fractures rather large fracture volumes are temporarily created by the parting of the formation. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of calculations and laboratory experiments concerning the mechanics of fracture induction and extension with a view to broadening existing knowledge relating to these phenomena. It is believed that continued progress in developing knowledge of this type is important to the further development of techniques for drilling and completing wells. When a wellbore is subjected to sufficiently high pressure, fracturing of the formation surrounding the well occurs. This phenomenon is a common cause of lost circulation during drilling operations, is a deliberately planned factor in most squeeze cementing operations, and is the controlling factor in many productivity stimulation operations. The exploitation of formation fracturing in recent years has been particularly impressive in sand-viscous fluid well stimulation treatments which were first introduced to the industry by the Stanolind research group1,2,3 several years ago. The borehole fracturing phenomenon has been analyzed mathematically by application of the principles defining the elastic and inelastic behavior of thick-walled cylinders of homogeneous, isotropic, and impermeable material.1,5,6 This basic argument is re-presented in this paper along with new considerations which strengthen it. In addition to these arguments relating to fracture induction some calculations and experimental results relating to the mechanics of fracture extension are presented. Since the nature of the pressure induced fracture at distances from the well is of great importance in considerations of well stimulation procedures there appears to be a need for an integrated approach which deals with the mechanics of fracture extension as well as with wellbore rupture.

THE Cliffs Shaft mine of the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co., located in the city of Ishpeming, Mich., is the largest producer of hard hematite ore on the Marquette iron range. The two shafts, A and B, lying 820 ft. (250 m.) apart on the east-west trend of the ore formation, were sunk in the early eighties, and, except for four years, have been steady producers of iron ore. Their location, on a hill overlooking the general offices of the company on the one side and the city of Ishpeming on the other, has made the shaft houses landmarks. In the spring of 1919, as the old wooden shaft houses had become shaky and out of line, and would soon be unsafe, it was necessary to replace them with the least possible delay. Three plans of construction were, therefore, considered: To replace the old shaft houses by somewhat similar structures made of wood; to use steel and radically change the design; or to build reinforced-concrete shaft houses outside of the wooden structures, completely enclosing them. The first plan was disapproved, because it is anticipated that the mine will have a long life and the proximity of other buildings makes the danger from fire rather great. Delay in receiving material, and the necessity for closing the shafts during erection, were other factors in the situation. The second plan was disapproved on account of the high cost of steel, slow delivery, and interference with hoisting during the period of erection. The presence near one of the shafts of a large bed of hard gravel suitable for concrete made, the cost of the third plan considerably less than the second, and little, if any, delay in hoisting was expected. Our expectations in this regard' were fully realized. Furthermore, the work could be done by unskilled labor, which was plentiful, and the erection could be quickly started. When the proposition was submitted to Mr. W. G. Mather, president of the company, he recommended that, on account of the prominence of the buildings due to their location, an effort should be made to combine in the design as far as practicable something of architectural beauty. A CCORDING to Guertler,¹ Smith and Hamilton were the first to study the Cu-Ti alloy system, but because of the presence of large amounts of impurities their data are inconclusive. Hensel and Larsen² in 1930 and Kroll³ in 1931 determined the high copper end of the diagram. In 1939 Laves and Wallbaum,4 in a short summary of compound determinations in titanium binary alloys, mentioned the existence of a face-centered cubic compound, Ti2Cu, with 96 atoms per unit cell, and also a compound, TiCu3, which was said to have a deformed hexagonal close-packed structure in which ordering had been observed. The existence of a compound, TiCu, was also found but the crystal structure was not determined. Craighead, Simmons, and Eastwood determined the effect of copper on the allotropic transformation in titanium. The investigation was limited to alloys containing from 0 to 5 pct Cu, using titanium of fairly high impurity content. Experimental Procedure The methods used for determination of the diagram included metallographic examination and X-ray and thermal analyses. The system was first worked out using the higher purity "Process A" sponge titanium and oxygen-free copper. The high titanium region was next determined more accurately using iodide titanium and vacuum-melted, oxygen-free copper. Preparation of Alloys: The alloys were prepared by arc melting under prepurified helium atmos- pheres in water-cooled copper crucibles. The high purity iodide titanium alloys were prepared by melting three compositions along with a specimen of unalloyed titanium in a single charge. A multiple crucible was used which consisted of a copper plate with four cup-like depressions. The unalloyed titanium was melted first and acted as a getter for any oxygen and nitrogen in the melting chamber. Since these elements harden titanium, the hardness of the standard specimen was an index of the highest probable contamination of the alloy melts. The sponge titanium alloy melts weighed from 100 to 200 g each and the iodide titanium melts from 20 to 25 g. In order to insure greater homogeneity most of the alloys were melted, turned, and remelted twice. The larger buttons made from sponge titanium were sectioned or crushed before remelting. These alloys up to 30 pct Cu were further homogenized by forging at 925°C. They forged readily up to 20 pct Cu but numerous cracks were formed in the alloys containing from 20 to 30 pct. Above 30 pct Cu the sponge titanium alloys were homogenized by heating for 200 hr at 850°C under prepurified helium. Similarly, the iodide-grade titanium alloys containing up to 3 pct Cu were homogenized at 1000°C for 24 hr and all others at 880°C for 200 hr.

The interface morphology of the Mg-32 wt pct A1 eutectic has been studied in terms of the freezing rate, the temperature gradient, and the impurity content. For the impure eutectic it has been found that for a given temperature gradient a fast freezing rate favors the formation of a cellular intwface with sub-grain strucfure. This cellular interface can be changed to a planar interface of the same substructure either by decreasing the freezing rate or by increasing the temperature gradient. For the eutectic of highest purity, as purified by zme-refining, no cellular interface was found for any growth condition and only a planar interface with subgrain structure was observed. Furthermore, a layer of liquid adhering to the interface during de-cantation freezes with shapes and sizes of the phase particles different from those in the main eutectic solid. WHEN a molten metal or a binary eutectic liquid with zero freezing range is solidified unidirec-tionally, a cellular interface is usually formed-3 This interface is schematically represented by Fig. 1. The profile of the solid-liquid interface has a corrugated shape, as shown in Fig. l(a), while the decanted interface consists of cells, as shown in Fig. l(b). The cell boundary in a frozen eutectic is distinguishable from the cell interior by changes in particle shapes, as shown in Fig. 4. The formation of a cellular interface, according to Weart and ack,' is attributed to a layer of constitutionally supercooled" liquid generated at the advancing interface by the simultaneous rejection of an impurity by the two phases of the eutectic mixture, which then permits freezing over an appreciable temperature range. This concept has been further elaborated by Tiller, who predicts that even in the absence of an impurity the rejection of solute ahead of each lamella of the eutectic may promote the formation of a cellular interface. On the basis of microscopic studies, melting-point observations, and X-ray analyses, a phase diagram is proposed for the Cb-V system. A complete series of solid solutions is formed with a minimum in the solidus at 1810°C near 35 wt pct Cb. No compounds or intermediate phases were found in the system above 650°C. THERE is an ever increasing need for better structural metals and alloys for use in nuclear reactors. In addition to the normal properties of engineering structural materials, such as high temperature strength, resistance to corrosion, and fabric-abil~ty, the nuclear properties of the material must be considered. In a nuclear reactor it is important to conserve neutrons, so a material which removes these neutrons from the reaction excessively is considered to have unfavorable nuclear properties. In nuclear-reactor design the engineer must have nuclear as well as other data available on alloys in order to make a wise selection of materials. Due to the fact that many of the common structural materials have undesirable nuclear properties, it is vital that new alloys of metals having more favorable nuclear properties be investigated. Columbium and vanadium are both high melting metals, both exhibit resistance to chemical attack, and no great difficulty is encountered in fabricating them into desired shapes. With proper treatment both metals can be cold rolled extensively without failure. In addition they have desirable nuclear properties for certain types of reactors. Therefore, the alloys of columbium and vanadium should be of interest in the atomic energy program. Since an alloy-development program is enhanced by a knowledge of the phase equilibria of the components, this investigation was undertaken to establish the phase diagram for the Cb-V system. According to the Hume-Rothery rules for alloying,' the chemical similarity, crystal structure, and atomic-size factor are favorable for a complete series of solid solutions for this system. Both elements are in the same family of group V of the periodic table and thus are quite similar chemically. The crystal structures of columbium and vanadium are compatible for extensive solid solubility, since both have body-centered-cubic structures. The atomic diameters of columbium and vanadium are 2.85 and 2.62Å, respectively. This difference of slightly more than 8 pct is well within the 15 pct maximum difference allowed for extensive solid solubility. Experimental Procedures Source of Materials: Columbium powder and sheet trimmings were obtained from the Fansteel Metallurgical Corp. According to the manufacturer the metal contains less than 1 pct impurity. An analysis of the metal showed approximately 1800 ppm C in the powder while the sheet trimmings contained less than 500 ppm C. Spectrographic analysis showed minor amounts of Ca, Cr, Fe, Mn, Si, Ti, V, and Zr in both forms of the columbium. No commercial source of vanadium having the ductility and purity desired was available to the authors at the beginning of this investigation. As a result, all of the vanadium used in this study was prepared by the bomb reduction of vanadium pen-toxide with calcium employing the method reported by Long.' Yields of massive vanadium normally were about 80 pct. Chemical analysis of the vanadium prepared in this manner showed the presence of 200 to 500 ppm N and 800 to 1000 ppm C. Minor amounts of Ca, Fe, Mn, Si, Zr, Cr, and Cb were detected by spectrographic analysis. This vanadium metal was ductile and was cold rolled into 5 mil sheet. Annealing was not necessary during this rolling and the metal retained its cold-rolling characteristic after are-melting. Preparation of Alloys: The Cb-V alloys were prepared by melting pieces of vanadium sheet togethel-with columbium in the form of sheet or pellets of powder. The melting was carried out under argon in conventional arc-melting equipment employing a tungsten electrode and a water-cooled copper crucible. Each alloy was remelted three or four times, inverting the alloy after each melting in order to assure complete mixing. Alloys normally were obtained as round flat disks, weighed approximately 70 grams, and had roughly the shape of a disk 1 1/2 in. in diameter and 1/4 in. thick. Half of each alloy

A method is described by whichX-ray pole figures and axis density figures may be plotted automatically. The X-ray data are obtained using a Siemens texture gonionleter and the Schulz reflection method. Composite sampling methods are used to obtain a full quadrant of the pole figure. The contour lines of the pole figure and axis density figures are drawn using a computer-controlled x-y plotter. The computer program used to draw the contours was obtained from ZBM. POLE figures used to describe crystallographic orientations of poly crystalline sheet materials are usually plotted manually from X-ray diffraction output in the form of a strip chart recording of the intensity distribution of a given crystallographic pole in physical space. Today's computers and associated plotting equipment now make it possible to plot pole figures and axis density figures automatically. Inverse pole figures have been determined by mathematically "inverting" X-ray pole figure data.'-' In general, these methods require complicated, time-consuming numerical calculations. A more economical but less accurate method is to determine the axis densities of low-index crystallographic poles using an X-ray diffractometer. When these axis densities are plotted in a unit stereographic triangle contour lines can be drawn to represent the axis density distribution. This can now be done automatically. Computers were used to plot pole figures by a method developed by Holland, Engler, and powers.' In their method intensity ratios based on a random standard sample were obtained from a strip chart recording, and the stereographic (x, y) coordinates of these ratios were determined by a computer. Symbols characteristic of different intensity ratio levels were then plotted using an automatic x, y plotter and intensity contours were drawn manually. The present paper describes a method by which pole figures and axis density figures have been automatically plotted from digital data obtained from a Siemens X-ray unit. Plotting was accomplished using an IBM 1620 computer and a Calcomp 563 digital plotter. COMPUTER PROGRAM The computer program was obtained from IBM Systems Reference Library, No. 1620-CS-05X, and was designed to plot contour maps from randomly distributed data. It consists of a set of twelve separate subprograms, four of which were used in this work. The program takes a given distribution of data points and by a numerical method determines the values at mesh points of a square grid system superimposed over the input data. The output data from this program is in a form suitable for input to the contour plotting program. A smoothing program is also available which calculates new mesh point values from a continuous function fitted to neighboring mesh points. The degree of smoothing depends on the number of points around a given grid point which are used to adjust or smooth the grid value. The contour plotting program is designed to allow the user to specify the interval, scale, and annotation of the contours to be plotted. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Pole Figure Data Points.
