I has been frequently confirmed in our laboratories; because of its simplicity we make routine use of it in the analytical solution of proble~ns in reservoir engineering. Nevertheless, comparisons of the k,,,/k,, ratios yielded by Eq. 1 with appropriate reservoir data have been few. Last fall (1899) we had the good fortune to be able to spend a few weeks in the new placer gold-mining region of Alaska, which is known as the Nome region. Cape Nome, after which the region has been named, and which forms the southeastern corner of the Nome Mining District, is an unimportant promontory on the southern coast of the Seward Peninsula (see map, Fig. 1). The name Seward has recently been given to the great peninsula which forms the northwestern extremity of Alaska. To the north of it is the Arctic ocean, to the south Bering sea, while its wesbernmost extremity, Cape Prince of Wales, is separated from the Asiatic coast by the Bering straits. The coast line of the peninsula is of a cuspate character, consisting of a succession of sandy, crescent-shaped beaches and rocky headlands. The interior has been but little explored; but we know that it is comparatively rugged, the higher mountain peaks rising probably from 4000 to 5000 feet in elevation. The mountains have an easterly and westerly trend, and the water-shed between the two oceans probably nearly bisects the peninsula. At Golofnin bay, the southeastern part of the Seward peninsula, some spruce is found, but to the west the region is entirely timberless, except for a sparse growth of stunted

INTRODUCTION THE experimental work on the oxidized copper ore at the New Cornelia mine at Ajo, Ariz., ended on Jan. 12, 1916. On that date final decision was made on the general nature of the process to be used in the 5,000-ton leaching plant, and on many of the details, as far as experience on a40-ton scale could decide them. With the approval of the Board of Directors and the General Manager, John C. Greenway, we have compiled what seem to be the most interesting data on the results obtained during the experimental period. The most important part of the data resulted from the operation of a 1-ton and a 40-ton plant at Ajo. Experimental work on Cornelia oxidized ore dates back to April, 1912, and has been going on nearly continuously since that time. A good many variations from the original idea have been tried, but the process finally decided upon is in principle and in all of its details a simple one. The history of the leaching work on this ore has been brought down to about a year ago in papers presented to this Institute by Stuart Croasdale1 and Dr. L. D. Ricketts.2 The present paper will, therefore, deal principally with the results obtained during the last year of the work.

PREVIOUS workersl'% ave found that as-quenched ferrous martensites can be plastically deformed at low stresses. They have also found that the stress to obtain small strains can be significantly increased by aging at temperatures up to 150°C. This behavior has been interpreted in two ways: 1) that the deformation at low applied stress is due to internal stresses and thus the aging phenomenon is due to relaxation of the internal stresses;' 2) that the microdeformation arises through the motion of unpinned dislocations and the aging process is the diffusion of carbon to the dislocations to pin them.293 In a recent paper,4 we have shown that under certain conditions the dominant microdeformation mechanism of as-quenched Fe-31Ni marten-site-austenite aggregates is the transformation of retained austenite. Our results on resistance changes during deformation and temperature dependence of the deformation also established that, at temperatures above 300° K, the microdeformation was not due to this transformation. The purpose of this note is to report results of experiments which indicate that explanation 1 is appropriate for this deformation. All results presented here are from conditions where transformation does not make a measurable contribution to the microplastic deformation, in Fe-31Ni-0.002C, or in Fe-29Ni-0.02C-0.25Ti. The experimental techniques that were used for measurement of the plastic deformation are described4 and analyzed5 elsewhere. Fig. 1 shows the microplastic response of 100 pct austenite at 300" and 350° K. The microplastic response of an austenite-martensite aggregate is also given in Fig. 1 and it is seen that, after formation of martensite, the initial plastic deformation occurs at lower stresses. Thus, the softness is not entirely due to retained austenite—the quenched structure can be deformed at lower stresses despite the fact that the macroscopic strength is significantly higher. A result which allows a distinction to be drawn between the alternative explanations for this behavior is derived from aging experiments on the low-carbon alloy containing titanium. We have previously shown4 that the presence of titanium in this alloy reduced the free carbon to a sufficiently low level that thermal stabilization of the austenite-martensite transformation was not detected. Despite this, Fig. 2 shows that the microplastic response is decreased by aging treatments. A similar aging effect in Fe-ZONi, with some titanium, has previously been reported by . Thus, carbon is not necessary for the aging process and explanation 2 is at best incomplete. While coal was undoubtedly seen by the Spanish explorers in Texas, no mention can be found of it in any of their available published records; it was likely noticed by the first Americans, and coal along the Rio Grande River was reported in 1834.1 The next record is that of brown coal in Bastrop County in 1837 by James Nicholson and Judge Pinckney Hill? Dr. Riddell saw brown coal along the Trinity River in 1839 and described it as follows: "In the banks of the Trinity, associated with the iron ore, and overlying the brown coal, whole trees and fragments of trees, piled sometimes one upon another, present themselves completely transformed into stone. In some logs a diversified metamorphosis is observable; one portion of the vegetable structure having been replaced with silex, another with brown oxide of iron, and a third is bitumenized or converted into coal. "In concern with Dr. F. B. Page, I took considerable pains in the exploration of the Trinity brown coal formation., As no excavations for working have yet been made, the best places for inspecting the formation are where the Trinity cuts its way through the highlands, or where its banks present themselves in bold high bluffs, as at New Cincinnati, and near the site of the projected town of Osceola. The coal lies in horizontal strata, dipping one foot in thirty to the northwest. The main stratum at the latter place, just above Bedias creek; is represented by the concurrent statement of W. C. Brookfield, surveyor, Mr. James S. Hunter, of Huntsville, Texas, Dr. Page, and some other persons whom I consulted, as between six and seven feet in thickness, the lower portion being between three and four feet above low water mark. Unfortunately, during my sojourn there, the river was unusually high and turbid for the season of year; I could not consequently verify the same by personal observation and measurements. The most considerable coal beds which I had opportunity fully to inspect, were in the Trinity bluffs, southwest side, at New Cincinnati, six miles lower down, and just below the mouth of Salt creek, near six miles above. The workable stratum of brown coal in each of these localities is about five feet thick, and situated some fifteen feet or so above low water mark. In quality it is said to be precisely similar to the coal in the seven feet bed."2 . The effects of methods of crystal growing, wafer sawing, polishing, routine handling, diffusion, and epitaxial growth on the defects in GaAs are reviewed and studied using reflection and transmission X-ray topographic techniques. In general, it was found that boat-grown crystals exhibited fewer defects than Czochralski crystals, although all crystals showed large numbers of precipitates visible when examined in the electron microscope. Mechanical surface treatments such as sawing and mechanical polishing introduce damage to a depth of about 5 µ, most of which can be removed by suitable chemical or chem-mechanical polishing. In addition, defects can be introduced through routine handling of wafers, for example with metallic tweezers. These defects can be quite severe, and have been observed 20 µ below the wafer surface. Defects can also be introduced through diffusion and epitaxial growth. These defects, which include precipitates, growth pyramids, stacking faults, dislocations, and so forth, can be detrimental to device fabrication. It is shown that wafers or films which appear defect-free optically can contain defects visible in the X-ray topographs. WHILE the use of GaAs in the semiconductor industry has increased very rapidly in the last few years, due mainly to the recent development of many important GaAs devices,1,2 the major limit to the production of commercial quantities of many GaAs devices remains a severe lack of suitable materials technology. This lack is apparent in two critical areas. First, production quantities of high-quality GaAs crystals, reproducibly doped and precipitate-free, simply are not available commercially, although some reasonable quality material is available on a limited first-come, first-serve basis. Second, in comparison to silicon technology, little is known about the effects of processing variables on the defects either present in as-grown GaAs or introduced through processing and handling of wafers. These areas are now receiving some attention from semiconductor device manufacturers, who are studying defects in GaAs in order to better understand how either to prevent their occurrence or to cope with their existence. Most investigations of the defects in GaAs have been made by optical microscopy3-5 or transmission electron microscopy techniques.'-' Recently, however, the imaging techniques of X-ray topography, electron mi-croprobe analysis, and scanning electron microscopy are being applied to the study of GaAs.9-14 In the case of X-ray topography, a one-to-one image is obtained that must be photographically enlarged. In compensa- tion, the defects within entire wafers may be imaged by simple scanning (Lang technique15) if the wafer is reasonably perfect, or by using the scan oscillation technique developed by Schwuttke16 if the wafer is warped or distorted. The purpose of this paper is to both review and extend the general application of X-ray topographic techniques to GaAs. Emphasis will be placed on the effects of growth and process variables on the quality and perfection of both bulk and epitaxial GaAs. Reference to optical or electron microscopy results will be made when useful. Since the effects on defects of a wide variety of processing variables such as crystal growing, sawing, polishing, diffusion, and epitaxial growth will be somewhat superficially reviewed, a fairly extensive bibliography of the most important recent results in these areas is included. However, for completeness, important defects will be illustrated here, although such defects have been previously shown by others. While this paper is concerned with defects rather than with the physics of X-ray scattering, the mechanisms of contrast formation in the topographs will of necessity be briefly mentioned. EXPERIMENTAL GaAs crystals, both boat-grown18 and Czochralski-grown,'8 containing a variety of dopants of various concentrations, were purchased from outside vendors. Wafers were sliced from the crystals using a Hamco ID saw and were mechanically polished using 1 µ diamond paste. Chem-mechanical polishing was done in bromine-methanol as described by Sullivan and Kolb.18 Chemical polishing was done using a modified sulfuric-peroxide solution, 11 parts H2SO4, 1 part 30 pct H2O2, 1 part DI water.5 Zinc diffusion was carried out in a closed tube, using a 10 pct Zn-In source at 825°C for 1 hr. Oxide masking techniques were used to select the area to be diffused. Epitaxial wafers were either purchased or prepared here. All epitaxial runs prepared here were carried out using a Ga-GaAs-AsC13 source in a closed tube at a substrate temperature of 750°C. Wafers were chem-mechanically polished and gas-etched prior to deposition. The X-ray topographs were taken on a Krystallos Lang camera, operating in the transmission scanning geometry (Lang technique15) or in the reflection scanning geometry (modified Berg-Barrett technique20,21). MoKa, radiation was used for all transmission topographs using a Jarrell-Ash 100-µ spot focus. CuKal radiation was used for all reflection topographs using a General Electric CA-7 1-mm spot focus X- ray tube. Topographs were printed from an intermediate contrast inversion film, so the contrast shown in all figures here is the same as that of the original 50-µ-thick emulsion L4 Iiford nuclear plate used to record the topograph.

MINING geology, both theoretical and practical, continued to make noteworthy progress during 1938. Mining companies generally, stimulated especially by the improvement in economic conditions during the latter part of the year, extended their workings and developed new ore bodies. Federal and state surveys expanded their search for favorable localities and actual ore bodies, with corresponding enlargement of regional knowledge. Theoretical investigations covered geochemistry of ore deposition, structural control of mineralization, and mineralogy of the ores (chiefly aided by the microscope). More geochemical work is greatly needed: ore searching is still too purely empirical, based on features that have been recognized else- where. FUSED quartz is a glass made by the fusion of nearly pure silica. Some confusion in terminology exists but in the trade today "fused quartz" generally refers to the perfectly transparent colorless product made from rock crystal whereas "fused silica" is a white, translucent product made from silica sand. Vitrified silica is the term preferred by purists for all quartz glass, but it lacks the definiteness of -the trade terms. Since the raw materials, methods of production, and properties of the finished products arc different for the two types, the trade terms are preferred. As fused quartz is amorphous, it-physical properties differ greatly from those of quartz crystal. Lacking crystallographic directions and having no piezo-electric properties, fused quartz. of course, has no value for the making of radio oscillator plates; but it does have other valuable and unique properties. Perhaps the 'best known and most useful properties are its extremely low coefficient of expansion and its ability to transmit short-wave ultraviolet radiant energy. Union Carbide has recently developed two open- pit vanadium mines in the Wilson Srpings area of central Arkansas about five miles southeast of Hot Springs. The ores from these mines, together with those from a larger vanadium deposit at nearby Magnet Cove, are processed at a new 1600- tpd plant built by the company in the immediate vicinity (Fig. 1). The Wilson Springs vanadium deposits are associated with the Potash Sulfur Springs intrusive, a circular igneous complex which is exposed over an area that is somewhat less than a mile in diameter.1 The complex has a crude ring structure similar to that of the larger Magnet Cove instrusive six miles to the east.2

IT is only in recent years that substantial progress has been made in developing a physico-chemical picture of the solid state. The molecular concept, so useful in dealing with gases, was naturally carried over to the field of crystalline solids; it has resulted in the firm implanting of erroneous concepts that only now are being eradicated successfully. Two simply written and effective books on the subject are Crystal Chemistry by Stillwell1 and An Introduction to Crystal Chemistry by Evans.' A more complete treatment of the subject is available in a book by Wells.' The monograph by Hückel4 also touches on a subject most easily perceived by reference to the brief introduction by Bragg,5 that master of the field. These texts make it clear that while some solids are built of molecules, many are built of ions, others of atoms connected in the form of giant molecules, and still others of cations and electrons. The various lattices in which these entities are systematically arranged, the joint use of several of these entities, and the transitional character of some of the bonds make for the great variety of crystalline solids. The purpose of this paper is to point out a most important corollary of present views on the structure of solids. In this connection the classification of solids in Table I is helpful. Atomic crystals are those formed by the noble gases, e.g., helium and argon. They are soft, sublime at very low temperature, of very low specific gravities, and not encountered in ores. Molecular crystals are uncommon among inorganic materials, common among organic materials. Typical examples from both inorganic and organic fields are sulphur, iodine, naphthalene, benzene, and carbon tetrachloride. These crystals are soft and have low specific gravities; where the molecules are small, the sublimation temperature is low. Filament and sheet crystals are rare. They are typified by elemental selenium and elemental arsenic, respectively. Graphite and molybdenite come near being sheet crystals. These crystals are soft in some directions, tough in others, sublime at various temperatures. Diamantine crystals, typified by diamond, are very few in number, stable at high temperatures, and extremely hard. Ionic crystals are common. Most salts, acids, and alkalies belong in the two classes of ionic crystals; examples are rock salt, fluorite, calcite, and angle-site. The salts, acids, and alkalies that do not belong in these classes are more properly regarded as transitional between ionic crystals, framework crystals, and diamantine crystals, e.g., ice and quartz. Fiber crystals are relatively uncommon mineral-ogically speaking, but common in the fields of living processes. Examples are asbestos, silk, cellulose, and wool. Never having done it before, it took us all day and until 11 at night to select and pack for a four-day back- pack trip up Lake Chelan last month. When we were through, we couldn't lift our own pack and Sylvia's, OUT spouse's, we barely managed to budge. Nevertheless, the next morning we were at the dock to board the Laldy of the Lake for the 3 ½ -hr boat trip to Lucerne. Our dress and accouterments creating the appearance of a veritable expedition into the wilderness made a sharp contrast with our fellow passengers, a senior citizens tour group from Spokane. We had come out to Seattle for the SME Fall Meeting and were taking advantage of the occasion for a vacation trip back to Lucerne and Holden where we had lived briefly 25-years ago, and a backpack trip up Railroad Creek from Holden to the Glacier Peak country, weather permitting. No matter what you say, weather is important, and this is one of the ingredients that went into making the SME Fall Meeting and Exhibit in Seattle, September 22-24, a thoroughly delightful experience for the 700 plus persons who attended. Seattle is a beautiful city, but with late September sunshine, which we experienced, it is the best. The second ingredient, is a swinging host committee. Under the leadership of Don Anderson and Tom Van Zandt, co-chairmen, and Mrs. Cecilia Reed, Ladies Program, superb hospitality and fine arrangements were blended. Earl Beistline, from Fairbanks, organized a two-day short course on arctic operations which preceded the meeting and drew an attendance of 44. Dick Robbins, in charge of arrangements, provided Masters-at- arms for technical sessions and a presentation of the colors by the U.S. Coast Guard at the Welcoming Luncheon. Eric Cheney's field trips ranged far and wide with events both before and after the meeting. David (Jeff) Kroft, capably managed audio-visual operations with a group of students from the University of Washington. Charles Hochmuth worked long, hard and effectively before and during the meet- ing on finances. Hank Reed, managed an authentic three-ring circus as Entertainment Chairman. His activities covered two cocktail receptions for all registrants and a dinner-dance. Dolph Campbell and Joe Hackbarth provided publicity by press and TV (see p. 37-40). SME's meetings have certain characteristics and possibly not all of these are known to everyone. The first of these is the deliberate involvement of the AIME Section in the area of the meeting. Most trade shows and conventions are run 100% by a professional staff and although SME staff could also do this, it has been our experience that a more friendly and better meeting results when the local members apply their talents. Actually SME only considers a site for a meeting after it has received an invitation from a Section. The knowledge of local conditions which Section committeemen bring to a meeting is of great value.

The Sixty-fifth Congress was a "War Congress." Perhaps nothing else than war work should have been expected of it, but it had time and opportunity to do much more. Engineers have good reason for sorrow over the engineering legislation that died merely because there was no opportunity for a vote. The mineral resources of the public lands of the United States are, except the precious metals, locked away from development. For more than eight years there has been an attempt by both the executive and legislative departments of the nation to secure legislation which, under proper conditions and without detriment to the public interest, will open up these lands for development. After eight years of study, argument, conciliation, and compromise, Congress agreed in conference of the two Houses upon a measure satisfactory to it and to the Executive Department and the final draft was passed by the House of Representatives, but in the Senate it was talked to death by Senator LaFollette of Wisconsin. Some of its proponents plan to, reintroduce the bill identically as agreed to in conference into the 66th Congress, where it is hoped that by reason of its peculiar fate in the 65th Congress it will be regarded in the nature of unfinished business and thus receive early consideration and passage.

Habraken—We read this paper with great interest and are glad to congratulate the authors for their valuable work, supplying an important contribution to the mechanism of tempering on the carbides in vanadium steels. We are in a good position to appreciate this work since we have been studying, for more than a year, Cr-Mo steels of a composition similar, but less highly alloyed (namely 0.1 pct C, 3 pct Cr, 1 pct Mo). Our results are quite in concordance with the authors', however, we wish to point out that it is very interesting to use equally the electron microscope in order to observe the variations of microstructure in steels. We have studied simultaneously the evolution of the carbides in situ with the electron microscope, and, after extraction, again with the electron microscope, and then with X-rays. The first results which we have obtained have been communicated at the Congress of Delft (July 1949) and at the "Journees de la Metallurgie" in Paris (October 1949). These may be summarized as follows: After tempering with varying either the tempering temperatures or the tempering times, the carbides show two evolutions. The first one is connected to the carbides existing in the steels, principally in the boundaries of the grains. For some groups of steels these carbides may coalesce and for other groups they may

E. M. BROHL. It seems as though the physicists in this crowd in the case of the cartridge cases have been a little in advance of the chemists in the crowd. What I am curious about here, and the way this appears to me, without too much study, is that in season cracking we get an atomic distortion so that both by sound means and by magnetic means we are finding a reluctance of the atomic planetary system to line up in accordance with the so-called good metal. The point that is brought up, or rather that has not been brought up-and I think perhaps we could think of that from the chemical point of view-is that this season cracking as I am used to the stress-corrosion cracking, appears to act much as though it were copper oxide. You remember when YOU take copper oxide films in which we again use this distortion of the atomic system to allow currents to pass selectively in one direction only, we get results almost identical with what we saw on the oscillograph report. In other words, on the one section of this season cracking we had a trace of one phase and if you notice on the sections three and four of the numbered oscillograph trace we had what appears 180 deg. out of phase.

RICHARDS, Boston, Mass.-I believe that the manner of working for efficiency in almost all lines is to study the conditions of highest efficiency, and then to measure what is being clone. We can then see how near we have approached the highest efficiency. Spigots in practice often use many times the water theoretically needed. There are places where that is necessary for safety reasons. There are, however, places where it is unnecessary, and in these places it seems to me that this work of Mr. Dudley's will be a great help to the mill man to arrive at the greatest economy of water and highest efficiency. (written discussiont).-Research work has often a more immediate and practical application to the in-dustries than even the investigators themselves realize, but coal mining has not attracted the investigator, except in so far as the mine-accident prevention work and fuel investigations are concerned. In future, the coal geologist will study the subsurface geology of the various coal seams as the petroleum geologist now studies the oil sands, and from the results of these studies the coal operator will be able to locate his shafts to the best possible advantage and to avoid faults that would interfere with underground work. One of the difficulties for many young engineers is the acceptance of responsibility. Even though they start as assistants to older men, they hesitate to offer positive opinions. They often make reports of observations and leave the boss to draw his own conclusions. If they happen to be in a position where they are not reporting to a senior engineer, and it is necessary to take the final responsibility for a decision, they try to get someone to help out and either assume or share such responsibility. Generally this is the result of want of confidence in one's self and fear that something may happen to go wrong and bring about criticism. Frequently diffidence is the principal factor. Young men come to me with reports on work that has been well done and well written up, who are evidently laboring under an intense desire to drop through the floor or to make a rapid' exit in some other way because of want of confidence. In my own early experience a consulting job came in that required considerable investigation. The greatest single obstacle in the path of constructive action in making conservation a reality is the inherent discord in the hearts of men. A perfect society doubtless is many millenniums removed from the present generation, but it must be admitted that progress toward a conservative use of our natural heritage with the altruistic concept of the greatest good for the greatest number for the greatest time can be attained only by a society in which discord is reduced to a minimum compatible with the limitations of human nature. Daily industrial discord is witnessed between management and labor which passes the bounds of arbitration and results in stoppages of production, waste of productive capacity, idle capital, idle labor, and the complete loss of the most unrecoverable element of all-time. The conservation of material things cannot progress independently of the conservation of the efforts of the human worker, and the results of these efforts are proportional to life itself as measured in hours and years. Unfortunately discord passes international boundaries, and the story of war is as old as the story of mankind. Our recent attempts of international control of nations appear to be dismal failures.
