Coal washing assumed an important role in the mining industry of the Pacific Northwest long before washing practice became firmly established in the Appalachian field. A Scaife washer was operated in the state of Washington in 1887; and by 1927, the fist year for which complete statistics were compiled, nearly a third of the state's coal production was washed, in comparison with only about 5 pct for the country as a whole. Mechanical preparation was adopted in Alaska in 1922 in a plant constructed by the United States Navy at Chickaloon to provide bunker coal for naval forces operating in northern waters. Many of the coal beds mined in Washington and Alaska contained more impurities than those mined elsewhere, and this circumstance contributed to the early interest in mechanical cleaning. A much more important factor, however, was the inclination of the coal beds. With steeply pitching beds, hand sorting by the miner at the face is impossible; consequently, all material must be loaded and dealt with on the surface, just as is now proving the case with mechanical mining of flat beds. Thus "full-seam" mining afforded the same stimulus to the early development of coal washing in the Northwest that - it is providing under mechanization in the rest of the country today.

THE propaganda in favor of the adoption of the metric system of weights and measures in the United States is founded upon the idea of compulsory adoption. There can be no argument about this, for the metric system has been legal, by Act of Congress, in the United States since 1866. Nobody ought to oppose an educational movement, and if pro-metric activities were confined to that there might be no reason to gainsay them. I do not propose to enter into any discussion of 'the relative merits of the metric and the English systems of weights and measures. The simple case is that the metric system not having made much headway in the United States after more than 50 years of legality, 'it is now aimed to force it upon the people by legislative compulsion. The main arguments in favor of such compulsory adoption are that it would- simplify the education of our children and would promote our foreign trade, for the reason that more countries of the world, with which we do business, use the metric system than the English system. I am going to disregard,' in this contribution, the first of these arguments, for it is largely conjectural." Not so with the other, which is specific, and being so its speciousness can be, proved. It is true that the metric system is used by more countries of the world than the, English system. It is commonly stated that of the Indo-European nations only the United States, Great Britain, and her colonies, and Russia have failed to adopt it. However, if with "colonies" we equate Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania and South Africa, we have a longer list of non-metric countries, and it comprises not only the most populous, but also the most industrial nations of the world.

WHEN your good secretary was kind enough to ask me to speak tonight I was rather reluctant to do so lest it be just another case of a man who has been abroad inflicting himself on his friends. So if anybody wants to walk out on me it will be perfectly all right. In the matter of statistics, geography, geology, and the like, you can get more from an encyclopaedia than I can tell you. For that reason I want to restrict myself to mentioning just a few personal impressions of that great country, Australia. About ten days ago I met the professor of mining from the University of Adelaide. In our conversation, which ran into a discussion of the relative characterstics of the two countries, he asked me whether it was fair to think of Australia as a land of strikes and not think of the United States as the home of murderers, bootleggers, and gangsters. At any rate those are the things most prominently played up in the news from the respective countries, so you can see how distorted our conceptions can be.

ONE of the perplexing problems that face the translator of an old technical treatise is the question of terms for units of weight and measure. We have used an English word only when it is linguistically equivalent to the Italian one and is a unit of approximately the same size. Libbra and oncia thus become pound and ounce, for the actual weights were within 10 per cent of the modem Troy weights. On, the other hand, the length measures braccio, palmo, and dito, which could be rendered literally as arm, palm, and finger or digit, respectively, have no good English metrological equivalents and it has seemed best to retain the Italian words. The exact transfer of Biringuccio's weights and measures into modern terms is impossible because of the uncertainty as to his standards. Even as late as 1803, when the metric system was first introduced into Italy, practically every city had its own standards. There were, for example, at least eight different palmi, varying from 22.3 to 29.2 centimeters. The values listed below for the various units mentioned by Biringuccio are the Florentine ones, which were also used in Siena and Tuscany: [ ]

The 114th (New York) Meeting of the Institute will be held in the third week of February, 1917. The Committee on Papers and Publications has set Dec: 1, 1916; as the closing date for the receipt of manuscripts intended for this meeting. Manuscripts must be received by the Secretary on or before this date. If they are sent through members of the technical committee they must be sent to those committees enough in advance of the time to be forwarded and in the hands of the Secretary by the time specified. While Dec. 1, 1916, is the final closing date, it is a great advantage to get papers in as much before that time as possible as it enables them to be submitted in proof form to their authors. Papers received on or before Nov. 1, 1916, will, as far as possible, be published in the January Bulletin or earlier, thus giving good distribution among the members in advance of tile meeting. The Institute's records show that the discussion of papers is very rnuch better when they are distributed somewhat in advance of the meeting instead of in the Bulletin which goes out immediately preceding the meeting.

AS the term "hardness" is used with many different meanings, it should be understood that it here means resistance to deformation by compression. It was determined by measuring the pressure, in pounds per square inch, necessary to reduce by 20 per cent., the length of cylinders 1 in. (25 mm.) in diameter by 2.6 in. (66 mm.) long. The tests were made at Columbia University on an Olsen 400,000-lb. machine, the load being applied at a constant rate of speed 0.0319 in. per min. The results were obtained by Messrs. Rigg and Williams, and some of them were given in a paper read at the Sixteenth Annual Meeting of the American Society for Testing Materials, in June, 1913. The remainder of the results were obtained in subsequent experiments by the same authors. In all cases, the results given are the averages of three or more closely concordant tests. All of the spelters tested were of standard commercial grades and all were of compositions making them good deliveries. The accompanying table gives the results arranged in the order of increasing hardness:

FIRE tubes are commonly made in order to frighten horses or to harm enemy soldiers, but although fire issues from them, they do not cause much damage because they cannot be used at a distance. If you wish to use them, you are not able to approach close to the enemy, for if there is anyone who is afraid, he does not let you approach nor does he come near you until he sees that they have finished burning. Thus, in short, the assault with this is one that is seen beforehand, and for which there is always time to decide on some action in defense. It is indeed true that they are beautiful things to see and when the name tubes of fire is heard it terrifies those who do not have a defense ready. When four, six, or indeed ten or twelve of these are put in the hands of as many courageous and united men, they are surely good in forcing passage on a guarded bridge, or in entering or holding a gate, road, or other narrow place. They serve also for setting fire to dwellings or the enemy's supplies,

THE work herein reported shows that galena in certain organic solutions of fatty acids becomes coated with lead soaps, and that this coating is not only highly water-repellent but is also repellent to certain organic liquids, particularly those [ ] of high surface tension; i.e., nitrobenzene, diphenylmethane. WETTING PROPERTIES OF GALENA IN NONAQUEOUS FATTY ACID SOLUTIONS When a "captive bubble"1 is withdrawn from a polished, plane galena surface under a nitrobenzene solution of stearic acid, the air bubble shows a decided tendency to "cling" to the mineral surface. The contact angle, therefore, was greater than zero, although it was not large enough to be measured quantitatively by the captive-bubble method.* [ ] When pure nitrobenzene' was substituted for the nitrobenzene-stearic acid solution, no clinging of the bubble was observed; viz., contact angle = zero. Although the contact angle developed in air-galena-nitrobenzene-fatty acid solution was small, the organic solvent repellency of the galena surface was great enough to enable good recovery in a laboratory flotation cell.2 In Table I are given the results of flotation experiments using several different fatty acids dissolved in nitrobenzene.

PEARL starch, a corn starch prepared with a minimum of alteration, is a good selective depressant for iron oxide minerals.1 From what is known of the complex chemistry of corn starch, there is evidence that it consists of a mixture of saturated giant polymeric molecules, both straight and branch- chained, the constituents consisting of glucose units with hydroxyl radicals as active or polar groups. To add to the existing knowledge of the chemistry of the flotation process, it is desirable to ascertain the effects on the corn starch as an iron oxide depressant when some of the hydroxyl radicals are replaced by other active groups that are common to flotation reagents. The ideal way to carry out this investigation would be to test reagents containing different active groups derived from corn starch. The preparation should be such that the reagents possess the same degree and location of substitution and are ac- companied by little or no degradation of the starch molecules. This, of course, is almost impossible to realize, as it is difficult to control the degree and location of substitution as well as to prevent degradation of the starch molecule during preparation.

Mining of the Freeport and Pittsburgh coal seams in the Pittsburgh vicinity dates back more than 100 years, and Consolidation Coal Co., or its predecessor, Pittsburgh Coal Co., has been actively mining in the area since 1900. Over the years, Consol has acquired good legal title to the coal lands purchased from individual farm owners, with broad mining rights, and in 98% or more of its title holdings, the company has a complete waiver of surface damage or the right to subside the surface land. (Titles in Pennsylvania can be in three forms: title in fee; title to the mineral; or mining rights permitting the removal and extraction of the mineral with or without waiver of surface damage.) In the early history of Consol, individual farms overlying the seams were purchased from land owners. Many of these titles severed the coal estate from the "in fee" title, and mining rights with waiver of surface damage were conveyed in the original severance deed. In this manner, Consol was able to put together its large mineable coal reserves. Consol has practiced "full recovery" mining as far as practical from its early years of hand loading to the recent era of mechanization.

J. A. Mathews,* Syracuse, N. Y. (written discussion?).-It is interesting to note how frequently we hear of some process that is going to revolutionize the tool-steel business. I don't know why it is, but every one seems to have it in for us poor tool-steel men. About 15 years ago, a good-sized plant was built in Syracuse for the manufacture of cast tools of malleable iron. The promoter of the scheme claimed to have a secret, process that had been given to him by a tramp to whom he gave a lift along a dusty road. The widows and orphans invested liberally in the securities of the company without consulting the men established in the machine-tool business in Syracuse. About two years later, when the sheriff's sale occurred, the secret, which was carried on the books of the company as an asset valued at $2,000,000, brought $15 at auction. A little later another concern started on the theory of replacing scrap high-speed steel with new high-speed steel tools made therefrom. THE crystal orientation in silicon iron that has been given a particular treatment described by Goss,1 has been studied by Goss, by Bozorth2 and by Sixtus,3 but their results do not agree and are almost entirely qualita-tive. The following pages give a description of the orientation of the crystals in the material as determined by means of X-rays and expressed graphically in a pole figure. The treatment consists of hot-rolling the material into strip and then giving it two cycles of cold reduction followed by recrystallization. This produces remarkably good properties in the rolling direction, the product having a maximum permeability in this direction of more than 25,000 and a permeability at 16,000 Gauss of more than 2200, It is now generally agreed that Goss's original conclusion' that the crystals in the final product are randomly oriented was incorrect, since Bozorth2 and Sixtus,3 using different methods, have shown that there is a decided preference in orientation. Those writers, however, expressed their results only in terms of one or more ideal orientations with deviations therefrom.

Carlisle: Jim Knapp, has been the good friend of hundreds-maybe thousands-of mining men in these western states in the last 40 or 50 years. Jim is going to talk about many of the mining camps of Nevada, where he has done plenty in the mining field during the last 50 years. Jim, for a starter, how did you happen to go to Nevada? Knapp: In the summer of 1902, two years after the discovery at Tonopah, the professor of mining at Stanford sent out myself and another student by the name of Joe Miller to make a report on the camp. We left San Francisco at 8 p.m., got to Reno the next morning, then took the train to Sodaville, arriving about 4:30 in the afternoon. The first man I met when I arrived at the Tonopah station was Tasker Oddie, a gentleman who later became the Govenor of the State and then a United States Senator. Before we got away from the stage station I also met S. H. Brady, the first mining engineer to put out his shingle in Tonopah. He afterwards became general manager of the West End Mining Co.

Carlisle: This is April 19, 1961. My good friend Dave Irwin is sitting on the other side of the tape recorder. We are at Rose Dhu Island, Savannah, Ga. Now, let's begin with your first job, where and what was that? Irwin: I started out to Arizona, looking for a job and wound up in Morenci. The next morning I applied at the mine office and was put on as a sampler. I worked as a sampler and as an assistant to Frank Pelton, the geologist, for a year, after which I went back to New Haven to take my last year of postgraduate work. After getting my degree, I went back to the Southwest with W. Rowland Cox and Staff, supposedly as a geologist. Q: But that was not when he was with Spurr? Irwin: That was after he had left Spurr. Henry Smith was with the Spurr end of the outfit and I happened to drop into the W. Rowland Cox end. My first job with him was to do some work on a prospect above Metcalf, Ariz., and from there I would go out on short reconnaissance trips in Arizona, New Mexico and old Mexico.

On Wednesday evening, Jan. 27, 1915, were held in the auditorium of the Engineering Societies Building the inaugural exercises of The Engineering Foundation, established by the United Engineering Society. The initial gift to the Foundation of $200,000, made by Ambrose Swasey, Past President of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, was formally accepted at this time. So far as known this is the first instance of a foundation devoted to engineering purposes. This meeting con-stituted also an appropriate tribute to the generous gift made to the Foundation and gave opportunity for expression of the satisfaction and approval which are felt by engineers everywhere at the establishment of a means of promoting the good of mankind through the work of the engineer along the broadest lines. Gano Dunn, President of the United Engineering Society and Past President of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, acted as presiding officer, and on the platform were seated representatives of the three societies constituting the United Engineering Society, and of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Members of the four societies and many other friends interested in the profession composed the audience.

THE decision of the lower court (United States District Court for the Southern District of New York) in the suit of the Dwight & Lloyd Sintering Co., vs. John E. Greenawalt has been affirmed by the United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. In the original suit, infringement of seven patents was alleged, these covering the process of producing a sinter .out of finely pulverized metalliferous ores as practised in shallow pans operating intermittently in distinction to the Dwight 6: Lloyd continuous machine. The court found that the long delay in bringing suit precluded any recovery of profits from the defendant under the basic down-draft sintering patent, although Dwight & Lloyd are recognized as the inventors of this' contribution to the art and its .importance is acknowledged.

The properties of limestone reservoir rocks such as the distribution and degree of continuity of the pore systems, and the relative volumes and permeabilities of the systems making up the complex cause large variations between performance of individual limestone reservoirs and their susceptibility to secondary recovery methods. The effects of these factors on the mechanism of fluid flow cannot be adequately evaluated with presently developed concepts, laboratory data, and geological information. The observance and interpretation of the performance of individual limestone reservoirs provides, at present, the most adequate approach for evaluating the integrated effects upon performance of the many. now immeasurable variations in the properties of limestone reservoirs. INTRODUCTION The development and application of techniques for increasing the efficiency of oil recovery from natural reservoirs is a problem of primary importance to the industry. During the past several years, a great deal of effort has been expended by the technical personnel of the industry toward the improvement of present known methods of oil recovery. and evaluating the factors which control the susceptibility of particular reservoir types to economic application of secondary recovery methods. Providing adequate and accurate laboratory data on the properties of the reservoir rock and its contained fluids. together with good production statistics, are available, methods have been evolved for estimating with reasonable accuracy the performance of an oil reservoir under either continued natural depletion or conditions imposed by introducing additional displacing fluid into the reservoir from an extraneous source through the injection of gas and/or water. The susceptibility of limestone reservoirs to secondary recovery by gas injection is very much dependent upon gas-oil relative permeability relationships for the reservoir in question. In a rock formation in which the porosity is of the intergranular type such as is found in sand stones and some non-fractured dolomites, a representative sample of the pore structure can be obtained in a small core plug. In this type of reservoir, it has been shown that relative permeability data obtained from laboratory experiments can be Properly applied to evaluate the flow relationships actually observed during the depletion of a reservoir. In addition, a good idea of the fraction of the reservoir which will be swept by the injected gas may be obtained from the spacing pattern used and the permeability profile of cored wells. From these data, it has been demonstrated that reliable estimates of performance and recoveries under gas injection operations can be made for reservoirs in which the Porosity is of the intergranular type. Limestone reservoirs on the other hand often present much more complex problems. One reason that the performance of limestone reservoirs is so variable is that there may be, in reality. two or more pore systems, the integrated performance of which will depend upon the physical properties of each system and their inter-relationship. For instance, in a limestone reservoir, the main pore structure, as far as void spaces for storage of hydrocarbons is concerned, may be represented by the intergranular openings of the rock. Usually in limes and dolomites, the intergranular pore openings are very small and the matrix permeabilities extremely low. Often, as in the case of Many dolomite and oolitic lime reservoirs, this is the only pore system, and performance is observed to be very similar to that of a sand stone of similar permeability. However, in the great majority of' the limestone reservoirs, there is present, in addition to the intergranular pore system, a complementary system of openings caused by fracturing or solution.',' The openings in the latter system are usually many times more permeable than the intergranular pore system due to their much larger size, and may contribute almost all the fluid carrying capacity of the formation, even though their volume may be a very small part of the total pore space in the reservoir.
