A pilot test of forward combustion in the Shannon pool, Salt Creek field, Wyo., is described. The Shannon sand, 950-ft deep, contains a heavy (25" API), viscous (76 cp) oil. Natural reservoir energy is limited. Primary production, intermittent since 1889, recovered only about 2 per cent of the oil in place. The field is operated by Pan American Petroleum Corp. for the Midwest Oil Corp., the owner. The original pilot was a 1.32-acre five-spot. The expanded pilot has eight producing wells surrounding a roughly triangular area of about five acres with the injection well near the center. A control or comparison well was also recompleted in another part of the field. Operation of the pilot has been little different front an ordinary gas drive. Little special equipment was found to be absolutely necessary. Except for some use of a temperature-resistant cement, all wells were conventionally completed. In spite of poor oxygen consumption, the over-all performance of the pilot has been good. Total oil recovery to June 1, 1961, was 73,971 bbl. The wells of the original pilot alone had produced about 24,000 bbl, equivalent to 50 per cent of the oil in place, when fire breakthrough at the first well occurred. These wells have now produced oil equivalent to more than 74 per cent of the oil in place in the original pilot area and production is continuing. It appears that ultimate recovery will approach theoretical maximums before the wells must be abandoned. Performance of the pilot has been encouraging, and expansion to a fieldwide combustion operation is being investigated. INTRODUCTION The results of both laboratory investigations and field tests of underground combustion have been reported previously.' However, most of the field tests were primarily experimental. More information and experience are needed before forward-combustion operations can be engineered with confidence. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of a successful pilot test of forward combustion. These re- sults should increase confidence in forward combustion as a practical method for commercial oil recovery. HISTORY OF THE SHANNON POOL The Shannon pool is located on the north end of the Salt Creek field in Natrona County, Wyo. It is approximately 50-miles north of the city of Casper. The Shannon pool's3 discovery well was completed in 1889, making this one of the oldest oil fields in the Rocky Mountain region. Three more wells were drilled in 1890. First production was hauled in wooden barrels by horse and wagon to the railroad in Casper. In 1894 a small refinery, the first in Wyoming, was built in Casper to process the Shannon crude. In the following years the field changed hands several times. It appears that each new owner did some development drilling as several wells were completed in each of the years 1895, 1902, 1905 and 1912, with negligible development in the intervening years. Forty-eight wells were drilled in this period, but many were later abandoned. Discovery of the more prolific Salt Creek field proper ultimately forced suspension of operations at the Shannon pool. After 1915 there was only sporadic production, mostly to supply cheap boiler fuel to drilling rigs in the Salt Creek field. But even this was discontinued in 1931. Since then the pool had been dormant until the recent operations, which are the subject of this paper. The Shannon pool is now owned by the Midwest Oil Corp. Field operations are conducted for Midwest by Pan American Petroleum Corp. THE RESERVOIR Fig. 1 is a map showing subsurface contours of the Shannon pool. The reservoir is on a nose of the Salt Creek anticline dipping to the north at about 500 ft/mile. The trap is provided by a shallow fault on the updip side of the productive area. The downdip limits are bounded by water, but this water has not provided an effective source of reservoir energy. The Shannon sand outcrops at many places in the immediate vicinity, providing good surface indications of the Salt Creek anticline. At the Shannon pool the sand has been lowered by faulting and is overlain by about 900 ft of shale and other sands. The Shannon sand consists of two members. Dr. Frederick M. Becket, President of the Institute, and A. B. Parsons, Secretary, will attend both meetings. Arrangements for the meetings are not yet complete but the respective local committees, working in close touch with the officials of the Division are rapidly shaping up the programs and other detail.

CUSHMAN TUNNEL No. 2 is adjacent to the Hood Canal, near potlatch, Wash. It is 17 ft. inside .diameter, about 13,000 ft., or two and one- half, miles in length, and is a part of the second unit of the Cushman power project. It connects Cushman ' Dam No. 2 and the penstocks that lead to the power house on the beach about 400 ft. vertically below the outlet of the tunnel. One shaft, 190 ft. deep, and two adits between 300 and 400 ft. long, were provided to speed up driving operations. his arrangement gave 6 working headings, which were operated 24 hr. daily. LIQUID metal solution calorimetry is a convenient method for determining the heats of formation of solid compounds. In this technique the heat of formation is the difference between the measured heat effects on dissolution of the compounds and of mechanical mixtures of the components in the liquid metal.' The heat of solution of the mechanical mixture may be calculated from the measured heat effect. At infinite dilution of the solutes, this heat of solution is equal to the sum of the heats of solution of the separate components. If the heat of solution of one of the components is known, the value for the other can be derived; if both are known, they may be used to check the accuracy of the calorimetric technique. The heats of formation of the tellurides of cadmium, indium, tin, and lead have recently been measured by metal solution alorimetr. The heats of solution of indium, tin, lead, and tellurium at infinite dilution in liquid bismuth at 623"K, calculated from the measured heat effects on solution of the mechanical mixtures, are in good agreement with the published values. The heats of solution of cadmium and of tellurium calculated from the measured heat effect on solution in bismuth at 623'K of mechanical mixtures of cadmium and tellurium, however, do not agree with values estimated from the literature. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE AND RESULTS The Heats of Solution of Indium, Tin, Lead, and Tellurium in Bismuth. The heat effects were measured when mechanical mixtures corresponding to the compounds In,Te, InTe, In2Te3, In2Te5, SnTe, and PbTe were dissolved in bismuth. The calorimetric procedure and the method of calculation have been described elsewhere.' The heats of solution of the mechanical mixtures were obtained by subtracting the change in heat content per gram-atom of the sample between the addition temperature (273°K) and the bath temperature (623"K), (H623°K - H273°K)S, from the measured heat effects. The calorimeter was calibrated with pure bismuth. The reported values of the measured heat effects are based on (HGoK - ^273oK)Bi = 4.96 kcal per g-atom.3 The measured heat effects are found to be linear functions of the solute concentrations of the bath in the dilute solution range. The values, extrapolated to infinite dilution, are listed in Table I, together with the heats of solution of the mechanical mixtures calculated using the published values of (H 623°K - H273°k)s for indium, tin, lead,3 and tellrium. All the error limits quoted in this work represent the spread of values obtained. The heats of solution in liquid bismuth at 623°K of mechanical mixtures of indium and tellurium in four different proportions were determined. Values of the heats of solution of the two components were then calculated from the resulting four simultaneous equations: The heats of solution at infinite dilution of tin and lead in liquid bismuth at 623°K were calculated from the heats of solution of the mechanical mixtures of tin and tellurium and of lead and tellurium using the heat of solution of tellurium calculated above. These values of the heats of solution are listed in Table I1 together with some published values for comparison.

If the reader finds that the basic information in a commodity chapter is insufficient, he can consult the appropriate sources in this chapter to find more detailed or more up-to-date information. In these days, technology develops so rapidly that this 4th edition will be somewhat out of date even by the time it is distributed. A comparison of this edition with the 3rd edition (1960) of Industrial Minerals and Rocks will clearly demonstrate how rapidly the scene changes. One of the best sources of new information, of course, is attendance at technical meetings. For example, the papers presented at the national and sectional meetings of AIME usually discuss new developments in the respective divisions of the society. Frequently this information is available in Preprints. In addition some are printed in Mining Engineering and/or the Transactions of the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME. Furthermore, other professional and trade journals contain articles pertinent to the field. A journal introduced in 1967, Industrial Minerals, published by the Metal Bulletin, Ltd., London, is an excellent source of information. The Mining Journal, Ltd., also in London, publishes a weekly journal, a Mining Magazine (monthly), and a Mining Annual Re- view. The latter covers the field from three aspects: (1) by commodities, (2) through technical developments, and (3) geographically. Other useful magazines and periodicals include Engineering and Mining Journal, Pit and Quarry, Rock Products, and World Mining, all published in the United States. In addition many new books related to industrial minerals have been published since the 3rd edition of Industrial Minerals and Rocks. Most of these, of course, are included in the bibliography of each chapter in this volume. Another excellent information source is the proceedings of the Forum on Geology of Industrial Minerals. This group, which held its 11th annual meeting in 1975, is sponsored by a state geological survey or another mineral agency on a rotational basis. The proceedings have been published by the various sponsors and are available as indicated in Table 1. Two major sources of basic industrial mineral and rock data in the United States, and also a good source for many foreign countries, are the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The two agencies publish many reports and maps on a variety of geo- logical and mining subjects. In addition, each agency has an indexed list of all their publications with a free service announcing new publications. (New Publications of the Geological Survey, U.S. Geological Survey, Washington, D.C. 20242) and New Publications-Bureau of Mines, Publications Distribution Branch, U.S. Bureau of Mines, 4800 Forbes Ave., Pittsburgh, Pa. 15213). The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) publishes annually Minerals Yearbooks which provide statistical data on mineral products including production, consumption, imports and exports, as well as information on new developments. Another very useful USBM series is called Mineral Facts and Problems. Editions were published in 1960, 1965, and 1970. Three other major series of publications by the Bureau are Information Circulars, Reports of Investigations, and Mineral Trade Notes. The latter is particularly good for news of foreign developments. A new Professional Paper No. 820 of the U.S. Geological Survey, 1973, summarizes data on the mineral resources of the entire country. The USGS, in cooperation with USBM, other Federal and various state agencies, has also prepared summary reports on mineral and water resources of given areas which include

Monolithic electrooptical mosaics of 2500 photo-transistor elements with internal row and surface column interconnections have been fabricated by epitaxial-planar diffsion techniques. Unique access to any elemed of the mosaic is provided through one of the fifty X and one of the fifty Y external leads. The sensor mosaic can be used for imaging applications and has a 1:1 aspect ratio, a resolution of 100 lines per in., a dynamic range in excess of lo3, a sensitivity of 0.5 per pw, element response within a 2:l range over 75 pct of the mosaic, and a minimum detectable signal of the order of 10-' w. Design considerations which ilnpose particclar fabrication yequirements are disctussed along with some of the problems peculiar to the epitaxial and planar-dijfision techniqes by which this device is fabricated. The solid-state silicon monolith has an imaging area of 0.5 by 0.5 in. and an element center -to- center spacing of 0.010 in. J monolithic solid-state electrooptical device has been developed as the photon-sensing mosaic for use in an image-converter system.' This system is the solid-state equivalent of the vidicon and can image radiation in the visible and near-infrared regions of the spectrum. The electrooptical image converter has the desirable size, weight, reliability, and low-power characteristics inherent in solid-state devices. It is read out by direct-wire means rather than by beam-scan techniques. The packaged unit is shown in Fig. 1. A selection of material for the sensor was based on considerations of both reliable fabrication techniques and material spectral response. Silicon was selected both for its response from the lower end of :he visible to the long-wavelength cut-off above 11,000A and for its well-developed epitaxial planar-diffused technology. The electrical image is composed of M x N discrete information bits with each bit emanating from one of the individual phototransistor sensors. The interconnected mosaic concept was introduced to provide a structure which is both manageable in its number of leads and compatible with conventional viewing systems which accept XY data. Interconnections along the Y direction are provided by internally diffused strips, while interconnections along the X direction are formed by vacuum-deposited metal surface bars. Unique access to any individual element of the M x N mosaic is available through one of the M and one of the N external leads. PHOTOTRANSISTOR DESIGN A phototransistor structure2 was selected for the discrete photon detectors of which the mosaic is com- posed. Basically, the mode of phototransistor operation is such that incident quanta are absorbed in the base area of the element where they generate electron-hole pairs. If the electrons are liberated within a diffusion length of the depletion region around the collector junction, they will diffuse to this depletion region and be swept across the junction where they account for a small component of the photocurrent. Similarly, the holes which are created within a diffusion length of the emitter junction will diffuse to this region where they forward bias the emitter and so induce injection of minority carriers into the base. This accounts for the substantial transistor photocurrent. This mechanism of operation implies several design and fabrication goals for the individual sensor elements: high electrooptical conversion efficiency, sufficient carrier lifetime in the base regions, and a maximum volume in which photons can be absorbed within a diffusion length from the depletion layer about the junction. Moderately high transistor gain is desirable to permit readout at low light levels; however, very high gain has a deleterious effect on mosaic dynamic range. The mosaic must also be characterized by good uniformity of element response as well as by good isolation between elements. The mining and ventilating system used in development work in the Pittsburgh Seam in northern West Virginia is discussed. The seam conditions and the nature of the accompanying methane gas are described. The type of equipment and the mining cycle will be discussed, showing how they are well suited for very gaseous development work. Face ventilation in development work is possibly the fastest growing problem of the industry. The coal mines of the future will be faced with the prospect of mining from under increasing depths of cover. Consequently, larger and larger amounts of methane gas probably will be found. The Pittsburgh Seam, in northern West Virginia, is an example of an area already faced with this problem. At the present time, most of the development work being done in this seam lies beneath 500 to 1200 ft of cover. The Pittsburgh Seam in this area has always been very gassy—even near the outcrop—and the recent development work has been accompanied with extremely large volumes of gas. In many cases, a single development section has liberated in excess of 1,000,000 cfm in 24 hr. This problem of heavy gas liberation was the chief concern, several years ago, when continuous mining equipment was first considered at Christopher Coal Co. All of us were apprehensive about the liberation that would accompany rapid extraction in a single working place. However, the experience during the past few years has shown that this ability to mine only one place at a time, is actually the key to working this type of coal. With all of the mining or advancement concentrated in one place, the ventilation can also be concentrated. By this it is meant that continuous mining permits the active working place to be ventilated with a maximum amount of fresh air, taken directly from the intake source without first passing another working place. Continuous mining (and a good ventilating system) also permits a much greater concentration of attention or vigilance to the actual working place. There are two things that are very important to the mining of coal having high rates of liberation. First, adequate volumes of air are necessary. Second, and perhaps more important, a mining and ventilating system must be used that will provide an uninterrupted flow of air to every portion of the working section. Liberations of this magnitude take only a few seconds of interruption for a dangerous accumulation of gas to occur. With adequate volumes of air available, the ability to concentrate ventilation more than offsets the concentration of gas emission that is inherent with continuous mining. The mining system used with continuous mining equipment at Humphrey Mine is similar to the system used at many mines in the area for development work. This system is designed to favor ventilation, realizing that other efficiencies are meaningless if the equipment must stop because of ventilation difficulties. This plan is especially well suited to minimizing ventilation interruptions. Basically, the overall plan of mining is to develop headings into virgin coal and encircle or block out large areas. These blocks are generally at least 2000 ft sq. The purpose of this blocking out is to bleed gas from the area before pillaring. Experience has shown this method to be quite effective, even in the most gassy areas. The gas in this field seems to migrate or flow readily from the solid coal into the outside return headings of the development work. The numerous clay veins and slips that are found in the area are extremely good avenues for gas flow. A block of coal, surrounded with development headings, usually bleeds off readily; and since it is cut off from the virgin coal, it is not subject to gas migration, through the seam, from this source. However, the outside return of the encircling development work, adjacent to the virgin coal, may liberate gas for years. This liberation from the outside ribs in the virgin coal is the reason split ventilation is used in development work. If split ventilation were not used, there would, in many cases, be a serious build-up of gas in the intake before it could reach the working face. Fig. 1 shows a typical development section having seven headings. The two outside places on each side are returns, and the three center headings serve as intakes. VENTILATION of all types of coal mines is fundamentally the same, in that sufficient air must be provided to properly dilute and remove dangerous and obnoxious gases and leave the oxygen content of the air not under 19 per cent in all places where men and animals must work. Perhaps animals should not be mentioned, as the speed of mechanical loading leaves livestock behind and outmoded. Since this paper has to do with the influence of mechanical loading equipment on ventilation, the problems will be confined to the splits and the coal-producing places of the mine. The removal of coal dust from the air, or its rapid transmission to the return air courses; the possible increase in the liberation of gases by the multiplication of cuts in the coal made during one shift or multiple shifts; and the additional electrical equipment at the faces, are the factors that cause the added importance to good ventilation in the permissible equipment area of gassy bituminous coal mines. VENTILATION FOR MECHANICAL LOADING IN GASSY MINES In gassy mines, the air currents must be maintained across the faces in such a way as to prevent short cuts to the returns and leaving pockets in which accumulation of gas might occur. To do this, two or more doors are required on almost every entry containing a track to the face, so located that in no event will a trip of cars block open the doors and permit the air to by-pass some place or places on the air-approach side. This method frequently requires the use of unusual lengths of duplex cables to reach the mechanical equipment at the faces, particularly where the distances between parallel working places are 100 ft., as at the Nemacolin mine. Fig. I shows a pillar section being worked with mechanical loaders. This layout requires carrying the air in on the right and releasing it on the left, because the track clearance is on the right side and the line brattice is built on this side from the last crosscut to the face. Thus, the air travels to the face with greater velocity, and gives more assurance of sweeping out the gas that might be exuding from the crevices of the coal. All working places, in driving through solid coal, are thus treated alike. They are all potentially gassy and must be swept clear of whatever may contaminate the air. Once the air starts into the working section, it is not released until it does a good job. Of course the volume of air must be large enough not only to dilute the gases but to carry away explosive fumes and fine coal dust quickly. Mechanical loading entails cutting and drilling of the coal during the same working period as the loading when two-shift and three-shift operations are employed, and all three processes create finely pulverized coal, which in itself is hazardous if not controlled by some means. The formation density logging tool provides a radioactivity measurement that yields formation densities in situ. The relationship between bulk density and porosity is well understood. With knowledge of grain and fluid densities, porosity may be computed from the indicated formation bulk densities in shale-free formations. The porosities thus determined may be used with a resistivity log for water-saturation determinations. One technique utilizes a density vs resistivity plut. A plot of density vs Sonic-log transit time is used for porosity determinations in shaly sands. This method is particularly suited to wells drilled with oil-base or salt muds. In shale-free formations, comparisons of density values nnd neutron-log readings are used to identify lithologr and, thus, to select appropriate values of grain density for porosity computations. Through the use of Formation Density, Sonic and neutron logs, the interpretation problems caused by complex matrix lithologies are simplified. Other applications of the Formation Density log are found in the identification of minerals in evaporite deposits and in yield determinations of "oil shales". INTRODUCTION Widespread field application has demonstrated that the measurement of formation density is a useful and revealing technique for well logging. Responding to the bulk density variations of the formation, the Formation Density log affords valuable data on the porosity, lithology and fluid content of the formations. Although not without its own limitations, the Formation Density tool may provide effective interpretation under conditions that hamper or preclude the use of other porosity devices. When used in conjunction with other devices, such as the Sonic or neutron, complex matrix conditions may be better understood, defined and evaluated. A previous paper' described the valuable contribution of the Formation Density tool in the logging of empty, or gas-filled, holes. The purpose of the present paper is to describe applications of the device in liquid-filled holes. THE FORMATION DENSITY TOOL The Formation Density tool was devised to measure the bulk densities of formations in situ. Actually, the device responds to electron density, but in the overwhelming majority of cases of interest, the electron density is very closely proportional to the bulk density. In other cases appropriate corrections can be made if necessary. Comparisons of log-derived densities with true densities for the more common matrix minerals are shown in Table 1. The tool consists of a gamma-ray source and detector mounted in a skid which, during the logging operation, is in contact with the borehole wall (see Ref. 1 for schematic). Gamma rays are emitted by the source and diffused through the formation. The number of diffused gamma rays reaching the detector at a fixed spacing from the source are counted. An increase in counting rate by the detector indicates a decrease in bulk density in front of the skid. Conversely, a decreased counting rate signifies an increase in bulk density. A measurement of hole diameter, between the face of the skid and that of the eccentering arm, is recorded simultaneously with the measurement of diffused gamma rays. Since the tool is a wall-contact device, the size of the borehole has little influence, provided good contact is maintained with the wall of the hole. Only in extremely large or small boreholes does the actual diameter become significant. However, for most accurate measurements the borehole size should be taken into account. Fig. 1 presents the departure curves for the conversion of counting rate to bulk density for liquid-filled holes of various sizes. It is of utmost importance that the skid maintain good contact with the wall of the hole. If, due to roughness or caving, there is mud between the skid and the formation, the tool will include in its response the relatively low-density mud, and the apparent density reading will be too low. Normally, permeable beds do not cave appreciably, so that reliable readings are usually available for zones of interest. Nevertheless, the caliper reading over the zone of interest should be examined for any wall roughness. When mud cake exists between the skid and the formation, the Formation Density log sees it as part of the formation. When thick mud cakes exist, a correction is required. A method is outlined for the analysis of large cores, developed primarily for the purpose of obtaining reliable data on fractured or vugular limestones. Porosity and fluid saturations are determined by a modified Dean-Stark extraction after initially bringing the samples to 100 per cent liquid saturation by a vacuum-pressure method. Horizontal permeabilities on the whole samples are determined in two directions, parallel and perpendicular to the di-rection of principal fracturing. Results are presented for various types of formations. A comparison is made between data obtained by this special method and the method of conventional analysis, and discussion is given of the relative advantages and limitations of each. In view of this comparison a modified method for the analysis of fractured and vugular formations is proposed, which method retains the advantages of the previously outlined techniques but gives promise of speeding up the analysis. INTRODUCTION For many years the greater part of the production in the Permian Basin was from formations of Permian and Pennsylvanian age. While production from these formations is still the predominant production. deeper prospecting has brought to light older formations with oil productive characteristics. Attempts to core these deeper horizons were at first usually characterized by poor recovery. The old rule of thumb, "good core recovery — poor well" was originated and remained in effect until recently. With the advent of diamond coring and the increased efficiency in drilling and coring operations. the old adage has lost its significance. Formations of Devonian. Silurian and Ordo-vician ages were successfully cored with varying degrees of recovery. The cores thus obtained were surprising and in some case; disappointing. Good recovery from these formations led to speculation as to the feasibility of analysis and the meaning of data obtained from conventional analysis. Commercial laboratories were engaged to analyze these cores. and their results indicated that data obtained by conventional methods would be of little value. From visual inspection it was apparent that in many cases the effective porosity for storage of hydrocarbons. and permeability. were contained largely in fractures and solution cavities rather than in the primary crystalline structure of the formation. In other cases the solution cavities augmented the effective porosity of the primary crystalline structure, or fractures enhanced the permeabiilty of the latter so that the formation might respond favorably to acidization and become commercially productive. Since the spacing of the cavities and fractures was often comparable to the core diameter, it was evident that the entire core should he analyzed instead of small fragments. On the basis of these observations, commercial laboratories were requested to devise a system of analysis which would yield data of practical value. Pro- cedures have accordingly been developed which seem to meet this requirement, and to date nearly 12,000 large core samples have been analyzed. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the methods used, to present typical results for several fractured formations and to compare the data obtained by this special analysis with that obtained by conventional analysis. Certain modifications and alternative procedures are finally suggested to speed up the analysis. CORE ANALYSIS PROCEDURE Fluid Saturations and Porosity The core sample, in segments up to 15 in. in length. is marked, weighed and examined under ultra-violet light to determine the presence of oil saturation. If present, the approximate quantity of oil and its location on intercrystalline, fracture or vugular surfaces is noted. This information is carefully recorded. The degree of fracturing and/or vugular development is also noted. The sample is then placed in a pressure cell and the air evacuated with a high speed vacuum pump. This evacuation is continued only long enough to reduce the pressure to approximately the vapor pressure of water in order not to remove excessive amounts of water. Water is admitted to the cell and allowed to penetrate the sample under atmospheric pressure, filling the pore space initially occupied by air and replacing the small amount of water removed by evacuation. The self-diffusivity of Ag10 has been measured as a function of temperature and composition in AgMg. a CsCl-type intermetallic compound with a substitutional defect structure on both sides of the stoichiometric (50 at. pct Mg) composition. These measurements show that In D increases linearly, and both In Do and Q decrease linearly with deviation from stoichiometry. The slopes of these lines are significantly steeper in magnesium-rich alloys. Equations for the variation of Q with composition have been derived by application of the theory of random walk processes on the assumption that diffusion in compounds of this type takes place by the six-jump cycle mechanism of Huntington, Elcock, and McCombie. The favorable agreement obtained with experiment furnishes fresh support for the correctness of this assumption. A principal result of this treatment is that. although the concentration of vacancies is considerably higher in the silver sublattice than in the magnesium sublattice, the acfivation energies for movement of the magnesium sublattice vacancies are so much lower that these vacancies are responsible for effectively all diffusion of silver in this compound. A tendency for vacancies of both types to be kinetically bound to wrong atoms is also noted. THIS study was undertaken to examine the influence of substitutional defects upon self-diffusion in an intermetallic compound, AgMg, with a CsCl-type crystal structure. The CsCl structure is exception- ally simple. At the equiatomic or stoichiometric composition in a binary alloy, it consists of two interpenetrating simple cubic sublattices, each of which is exclusively populated by the atoms of one species. When atomic size and other factors are favorable, deviations from stoichiometry can be entirely accommodated by the substitution of atoms of the species present in excess of 50 at. pct on the sublattice of the other species on a one-for-one basis. Under this condition, the only vacancies present are those formed by thermal activation. The excess atoms thus incorporated into the sublattice of the minority species may be considered as substitutional defects in this sublattice. Several X-ray studies have shown that the defect structure of AgMg is entirely of the substitutional type on both sides of the stoichiometric composition.1"3 The thermodynamic investigation of Kachi indicates that, aside from a low level of thermal disorder and these constitutional defects, order is maintained to the solidus temperature. This compound is therefore a particularly useful vehicle for a study of the influence of substitutional defects upon diffusion kinetics. Other advantages of AgMg for this purpose include: the broad composition region, as much as approximately 10 at. pct on either side of the stoichiometric (50 at. pct Mg), in which the compound is stable; the comparatively low temperature range of the solidus (820°C and below),5 making diffusion anneals near this range experimentally convenient; the reasonably good machinability of the compound, permitting utilization of the standard sectioning method of radiotracer analysis; and the availability of a good tracer, A for one of the constituent species. This paper preFents the results of a series of model flow test on a number of large limestone cores, having different pore configurations. For limestone cores having substantially sandstone type porosity, the production characteristics for solution and external gas drives are similar. For cores whose pore spaces were microscopically heterogeneous (i.e., consisted of combinations of solution cavities, matrix. and fissures), the production characteristics lor solution and external gas drives vary widely. The degree of divergence between gas-oil relative permeability relationships calculated from solution or external gas drive tests is an indication of heterogeneity of rock pore structure. The results of water floods on cores depleted by solution gas drive for each of these two general types of limestone porosity are also shown. Generalizations are made on the water flood recovery that could be expected from each of these two types of limestone porosity. The similarity between solution drive field performance and model solution drive performance on cores from the same formation is shown for several cases. This indicate? the feasibility of predetermining limestone field performance from such large core tests. Photomicrographs of plastic-impregnated rock thin sections of the samples tested are presented as an aid in understanding the flow test performances. INTRODUCTION During the past 15 years. reservoir engineers and research workers have developed methods of testing rock and fluid samples and applying the results, through calculation, to allow reasonably satisfactory predictions of oil recoveries and performances to be expected in sandstone oil recervoirs. It has been determined that representative fluid flow data can be obtained on rock samples as small as three-fourths in. in diameter by one in. long in most sandstones. However, little has been accomplished toward the laboratory determination of fluid flow characteristics in limestones. There has been a great deal of speculation as to the influence of variations in pore size, shape, and degree of interconnection upon oil recovery processes, and a great deal of thought has been given to the interpretation of limestone field perfomance. It has been generally recognized that predictions of reservoir performance based on oil displacement tests on small limestone core samples the size of those used for sandstone tests can often be misleading because of the improbability of obtaining a representative sample in such a small core. Obviously, if there are present in the rock, pore openings of the magnitude of 1/16 in., or fractures or solution channels up to one in. or more in length, it will be impossible to cut any sample less than one in. in any dimension which would represent the flow geometry of the gross rock system. In some formations, the individual openings in the rock are of such size that it would be impossible to obtain a good sample of the flow system even in the total core available from conventional-sized well cores. However, by increasing to the maximum the size of the sample used, it should be possible to obtain representative flow data from the majority of limestone reservoir materials which can be used for prediction of future primary production performance or response to be expected from secondary recovery measures. The only alternatives to obtaining good laboratory test data to serve these purposes are extrapolation of primary performance data obtained by partial depletion of a field, or obtaining information from pilot tests. It has been shown previously, and will be demonstrated further by the work reported in this paper, that extrapolation of solution gas drive performance for an estimate of gas injection response can be very misleading in reservoirs of heterogeneous type porosity. Although it cannot be expected that laboratory information can ever eliminate the necessity of small-scale pilot operations, it is expected, as is now the situation with sandstone reservoirs, that laboratory tests should provide reliable information for screening of

The only fine coal washer with proved automatic controls, the feldspar jig is capable of good efficiencies even at low separating gravities, handles a variety of products, and treats 150 tph and over. IN continental Europe the feldspar jig is used almost exclusively for cleaning the fine sizes of coal; it operates with an artificial bed, made up generally of pieces of feldspar or of any other hard and heavy rock with good cleavages. A primitive form of this machine requiring close supervision was used in this country years ago, but output was small. The modern machines are generally air-pulsated Baum-type jigs, with capacities up to 150 tph, and treat sizes from % in. to 0, usually previously dedusted or deslimed. These jigs are equipped with very accurate and sensitive automatic controls insuring satisfactory operation even at low separating gravity and with feeds irregular in quality and quantity. This paper will deal more particularly with coal cleaning separation, but the technical studies apply equally to all minerals. Theory of the Feldspar Jig To understand fully the operation of the feldspar jig and to appreciate its potential value, it is necessary to measure and analyze the motion of small particles of various specific gravities, falling in various media, under various conditions. As no practical formulas were available for that purpose, the writer has developed new theories and established new sets of formulas, which cannot be demonstrated here. They are applicable to all minerals and to many problems of coal or mineral concentration. These formulas do not pretend to absolute accuracy, but results, tested by comparison with experimentally recorded data, are sufficient for practical purposes, as they give definite indications of trends, relative values, and order of magnitude of the many factors involved. For pulsating motions no earlier formulas are available. In the case of continuous currents or motions, such formulas as Rittinger's, Allen's, or Stokes', over a hundred years old, apply only to special shapes and sizes of particles, involve factors and coefficients difficult to measure or appreciate, and deal only with free motions. They are of little use in solving practical problems. Units used with the formulas presented here are in the CGS system. Lateral friction and suction have been taken into account according- to methods currently used in aerodynamics, and only hindered motion is dealt with. As the feldspar jig is primarily intended to create a fluid bed condition, the mixture of fluids and solids obtained is homogeneous, and the apparent specific gravity of the separating medium is calculated accordingly. For instance, if 20 pct of the volume is coal and shale, with an average of 1.60 sp gr, in a liquid of 1.10 sp gr, the actual specific gravity of the separating fluid is 0.80 x 1.1 + 0.20 X 1.6 = 1.20. The fundamental equations are as follows: The general motion of a particle falling in a medium of specific gravity equal to u, hindered motion. is dv/dt = g/Ls [ L (s-u) - u/g v2 [1] g = 981 cm per sec, acceleration of gravity, and L = thickness of the particle of specific gravity (s) and velocity (v). The initial acceleration dv/dt = g (1-u/s ) [2] is a function of the specific gravity of the particle, only for a given medium, and independent of its dimensions—an ideal separating condition. The terminal velocity Vt = gxL- (s-u)/u, [3] for a given value of u, is a function of s and L. Two particles, L, s, and L2 s2, are said to be equivalent if they have the same terminal velocity, and accordingly L1/L2=s2-u/s1-u. [4] Two such particles cannot be separated by continuous currents, in any concentrating device. I NDUSTRIAL explosives, as distinguished from military explosives, include high explosives and blasting powder. The high explosives which are best known are straight dynamite, gelatin dynamite, ammonia dynamite and permissibles. There are two kinds of blasting powder, saltpetre blasting powder and nitrate of soda blasting powder. Blasting powders are mechanical mixtures of nitrate of potash or nitrate of soda with sulfur and charcoal, highly compressed, granulated and glazed. They ignite from a spark and burn with relative slowness, the rate of burning and hence the rate of conversion into gases depending upon the size of the granulation and upon the degree of. confinement under which the powder is placed. High explosives, on the other hand, are chemical compounds which detonate; that is, when the explosive is subjected to a violent shock, provided in practice by a blasting cap or an electric blasting cap, the molecule of the essential ingredient, usually nitroglycerin, is disrupted and the energy and heat released cause any other explosive ingredients which may be present, such as ammoniuin nitrate or T.N.T., to decompose with a resultant evolution of gases at an extremely rapid rate varying from 6000 to 20,000 ft. per second.

Do not write until you have something to say. Think first; then write. In order to be understood, you must know what you wish to say. Clear writing is the consequence of clear thinking. Therefore consider your subject well before you begin to write; ruminate on it; marshal the salient facts in your mind; saturate yourself with the ideas you wish to express and with cognate ideas; then express yourself deliberately. If you are bubbling over with your subject the words will come, but you might as well expect to sail without a breeze as hope to give life to words without the living thought. Here I may advert to the fact that among the uneducated it is a common expectation to acquire the knack of writing without taking the trouble to study the art of literature. I overheard a woman in a suburban train remark to her neighbor: "I'd like to be able to write well without stopping to think about it". She was one of many that would like to do a thing well without the trouble of thinking; but it cannot be done in respect of anything to which thought is essential. The possession of a good voice does not justify a person in expecting to sing successfully to a large audience; before singing in public one has to master the technique of singing; one has to learn first how to breathe properly, how to enunciate, and many other things. The successful singer is an artist, not a megaphone. Most of us would regard a man or a woman without any training in the art of singing as a fool or an impostor if he or she were to give a public concert, yet we do not recognize the equal foolishness and imposture of persons that write books before they have studied the technique of writing. WHEN gold was discovered in California, and San Francisco grew almost over night from a handful of people to many thousands, one of the first difficulties experienced was the lack of money. Gold dust in considerable quantities was rushed into the city from the various mining camps but there was no money. Purchases were paid for by weighing out dust in hand scales. We can appreciate' the difficulty of paying for a drink or buying a postage stamp under these conditions. All this gold was in the form of dust from placer workings and the first metallurgists were the assayers' who melted and refined this gold, casting it into bars which were weighed, assayed, stamped with fineness; value, and the name of the assayer. Many .of these plants were of considerable size, handling shipments that were accumulated by banks and express companies throughout the "Diggings" and sent to San Francisco to be shipped by water to the eastern states. The results are presented of a study of the application of analytical methods to the solution of two-phase flow into single wells. Approximate analytical expressions for the pressure distribution in two-phase flow are found ;;; a number of conditions. The results obtained from the analytical solutions me found to be in good agreement with results obtained by finite difference techniques using a high speed digital computer. Mathematical solutions for four sets of boundary conditions are presented. All of these solutions are composed of a short-term transient plus a steady or quasi-steady state. The rates of decay of the short-lived transients are analyzed. It is found that the durations of the short-term transients may be characterized by a parameter defined as the time constant which can be determined from simple relations. It is shown also that if the outer radius is much greater than the radius of the well. the short term transients decay at rates which are proportional to the square of the exterior radius, and the rates of decay are only slightly dependent upon the radius ratio. Numerical solutions based on finite difference techniques are presented for a number of conditions. The numerical solutions are in good agreement with the predictions based on the theoretical analysis for small and moderate drawdowns. Examples involving large drawdowns indicate that the nonlinearities in the equations of flow do not appreciably alter the longevity of the short-term transients. In all cases the time required for the short-tern transients to disappear is predicted satisfactorily. INTRODUCTION The mechanism by which oil and gas flow into a single well is of vital interest to the petroleum industry. The fundamental equations of two-phase flow which describe this mechanism are nonlinear partial differential equations. Numerical solutions of these equations describing pressure transients have been obtained with the aid of electronic computers. Although solutions obtained in this manner take into account a large number of effects, the reduction of this information to useful generalities is difficult. One method of obtaining generalities is the use of linearized approximations of the nonlinear equations. Since it is possible to obtain explicit solutions of the linearized equation, general properties of the role of pressure in the flow mechanism may be ascertained. Results obtained from this approach are limited to some extent by the linearizing assumptions. The severity of these limitations may be evaluated by comparing solutions of the linear equation with numerical solutions of the more exact nonlinear equations of two-phase flow. In the past considerable amount of work has been devoted to studying pressure build-up using the single-phase flow theory. Unfortunate1y, most prep sure build-up tests involve multiphase flow. A small amount of work has been done studying pressure build-up where the flow is two-phase. The encouraging results of these studies suggest that useful results may be found from additional studies of not only pressure build-up, but also the rapid transients associated with placing a well on production. This paper presents the basic theory of the pressure transients associated with placing a well on production and with closing it in. The paper is concerned chiefly with two-phase compressible flow; however, the results also apply to single-phase flow. The results are based on analytical solutions of the flow equations, and they are verified by numerical solutions using finite difference techniques. Much of the previous work on compressible flow into wells has been confined to single-phase flow. Some work has been done on compressible two-phase steady state flow, and solutions of the equations of flow have been found by finite difference techniques using high-speed computers. Muskat1 presents some rather general solutions to the equations of single-phase compressible flow into wells. Much work has been done on pressure build-up in wells (see, for example, Refs. 2-6). Almost all of the work on pressure build-up concerns single-phase flow with the exception of Ref. 5 and part of Ref. 2. Some work has been done on pressure fall-off in injection wells.718 Muskat9 presents the solution of the equations for radial steady state two-phase compressible flow. Hotel Headquarters will be at the King Edward Hotel, in which also the sessions will be held. The Queens, Rossin, Wallen, Iroquois and Palmer are good hotels not far from the King Edward. Members must secure their hotel-accommodations beforehand, by direct correspondence with the hotel they select. For those who neglect this precaution, the Local Committee will doubtless do what it can, but is unable to promise anything. Correspondence concerning this meeting (including notices of intention to attend it) should be addressed hereafter exclusively to Mr. W. G. Miller, Provincial Geologist, Bureau of Mines, Toronto, who is the representative of the Local Committee. The excursion to Cobalt, Lake Tenagami, Sudbury, etc., arranged by that Committee, involves the use of a special Pullman train for meals and lodging. After waiting a reasonable time to hear from members, the Local Committee has made its contract for Pullman cars. According to its latest report, there was still room for additional excursionists. Under this head, application made immediately to Mr. Miller may not be too late. PRIOR to :1937 any discussion of mining and transportation in the iron mines of Minnesota would have been limited largely to conventional methods which have been used for years in the iron ore industry. Today, however, an inspection trip to the crest of almost any open pit on the ranges will re- veal great progress underground mining and the transportation of underground ore have also developed rapidly and if and when underground mining of iron ore again becomes generally economically feasible; these mining methods will probably witness a transformation equal to that which has taken place in the open pits.
