The complete statistics of zinc-ore production in the United States for 1916 are not yet available. The following figures are, therefore, only approximate. The total production of concentrates for this year, including New Jersey and Tennessee, amounts to 1,280,000 tons. Of this tonnage, five mines produced approximately 536,000 tons, or about 42 per cent. The remaining concentrates came mainly from the "Valley States," Missouri, Wisconsin, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. The 1,280,000 tons of concentrates represent about 25,000,000 tons of crude or run-of-mine ore. Of the five mines producing the 42 per cent., the dimensions of three are approximately 25 by 1500 by 2000 ft. (7.6 by 457 by 610 m.) or more: Four of the five mines are undoubtedly veins in the common acceptance of the term. They are located in great vein systems. The mines of "Valley States" have not, so far, been classed as veins; simply as "secondary deposits." The origin of these secondary deposits has been a warmly debated subject. Many geologists contend that they are the results of leaching from overlying and adjacent rocks carrying but traces of zinc, these traces leached out and deposited in favorable places. If this theory is correct, deposition is strictly limited to shallow depths. No volume of ore comparable to that of "true fissure veins" is to be expeeted. Just what this means to the future of zinc mining in these States is here indicated. The total zinc-bearing areas of these States amount to about 9124 sq. miles (23,631 sq. km.). Assuming that 10 per cent. of this total will be more or less productive, there are 912 sq. miles (2,362 sq. km.) of "mineral" ground. The average depth of the operated mines is something like 100 ft. or less. In Bulletin 606, U. S. Geological Survey (1915), p. 202, Siebenthal makes the following statement: "The writer is informed by William Waugh, one of the drillers of the Stone City well, that cuttings from other wells which he drilled in the vicinity of Pittsburgh, Kan., have shown galena and sphalerite taken from a depth of 591 ft. (180.14 m.) and that the showing of ore at some places would be considered good enough to justify the sinking of a shaft had it been found in the Joplin district and at shallower depths." The surface tension of zinc has been determined by the sessile-drop method in a progvam emphaszzing detailed experimental care. The surface tension oj. the pure metal was measured over a range of ternperature from the melting point (419.6"C) to 540°C. At the melting point, the suvface tension of zinc was found to be: 1) 99.99+ pct Zn - 757.0 5 dynes per cm 2) 99.999+ pct Zn - 761.0 5 dynes per CI 3) 99.9999 pct Zn - 76'7.5 5 dynes pev cna From experiments carried out in a closed, isothermal cell, the temperatuve coejyicient of the surface tension (6y/6T)p, , of zinc xas found not to be negative but to be postiue. A positive tenzperatre coefficient indicates a greater depee of order in the surface than in the body of the lquid. Houlezer, by delibevately inducing continuous zaporization, a temperature coefficient of su)face tension with a negative slope can be produced. The work reported herein was undertaken as part of a larger program of fundamental research on the properties of molten zinc and zinc alloys. This program grew out of a continuing interest at the Mines Branch in the behavior of liquid metals in the foundry and of a desire on the part of the zinc industry for reliable basic data. The work was originally begun in cooperation with the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. Ltd., Trail, B.C., and was subsequently continued from 1960 to date in association with the Canadian Zinc and Lead Research Committee and the International Lead and Zinc Research Organization. Although the surface tension of liquid zinc has of course, been measured before, as Table I and Fig. 1 demonstrate, there is not good agreement among the existing values. Such disparities arise because sources of experimental error are insufficiently controlled. This situation places the reader in doubt. One result may be correct within narrow limits—even fortuitously—yet, because there is not agreement between several values, none can be accepted with conviction and all become suspect. It seemed, therefore, in the circumstances, that there was room for further work embodying considerable emphasis on experimental care in order that, within a small margin of error, an accurate value might be obtained. It was in this spirit that the work was undertaken. METHOD The sessile-drop method -as adopted for this work. In this method, when applied to liquid metals at elevated temperatures, the outline of the meridional section through a drop resting freely on a horizontal surface is recorded photographically. HE success of the sintered aluminum powder material (SAP)' in raising the maximum useful temperature of aluminum alloys has stimulated effort in investigating similar systems in which the metallic matrixes have higher melting points. Examples of such systems which have been studied are nickel-alumina,2, 3copper-silica,4 copper-alumina,4 titanium-cerium oxide,5 and 80/20 nickel-chromium,8 cobalt,= and molybdenum7 matrixes with various hardeners. Conventional precipitation-hardened high-temperature alloys are often thermally unstable in service. The original fine particles that are responsible for good strength properties grow in size at elevated operating temperatures, a process termed "over-aging." This growth of precipitated particles causes a gradual loss in strength properties. A previous paperb describes the factors that govern the process of overaging, and estimates the time required for overaging of a nickel-alloy matrix dispersion-hardened by various precipitates such as are found in current high-temperature alloys, and by alumina. These calculations indicate that nickel-base alloys hardened with Ni3Al, Tic, or TiN are quite unstable at 1340" F (727°F). Such alloys should overage within a few hours at that temperature. A nickel-base alloy hardened with alumina, on the other hand, should behave differently. It should not overage appreciably within a thousand years. It was further shown8 that the thermal stability of the oxide-hardened alloy is mainly due to the low solubility of oxygen in equilibrium with alumina in the nickel-base matrix. Since the oxygen solubility is small, little oxygen can diffuse, and structural changes require very long times. This paper illustrates the effects of time and temperature on the structural stability of nickel alloy matrixes hardened by dispersions of Ni3A1, Ni3Ti, Tic, and alumina, and of nickel-chromium matrixes hardened by alumina. Hardness measurements and metallography have been used as a measure of structural stability. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Using the best information from published phase diagrams,'-l4 compositions of the Ni-Al, Ni-Ti, and Ni-Ti-C alloys were determined so as to have 5 vol pct of precipitate at 1350° F(732°C), the temperature selected to illustrate the effect of time on structural stability. Table I lists the chemical compositions of these alloys. Standard laboratory melting and alloying techniques were used in preparing ingots of the F-Series of alloys. The cast ingots, 1 3/4 in. in diam, were forged to 3/8-in. diam rods.

The discovery of Bromide production in the Fitts field, shallow production in Jackson County of Southwestern Oklahoma, abundant production in the Edmond field, and discovery of many small pools in all parts of the state, were the events that made petroleum history in Oklahoma in 1934. Wildcatting was much more active, as evidenced by a number of new discoveries. There was no important development in the older fields. The rapid decline of the potential of the Oklahoma City field was an important feature of the history of the year. The accompanying tabulation of oil fields (Table 1) is not complete. Many of the early records of operators and pipe line companies are lost and it will be impossible to work up complete statistics for a number of the older fields. The table includes most of the important fields of the state and includes fields of a number of different types. It is hoped that a great many additional fields may be worked up for next year's report. Fitts Pool.—The Fitts pool, in Pontotoc County, was discovered in 1933. Before the middle of 1934, the Pennsylvanian sands yielded -some oil at depths ranging from 1400 to 2800 ft. The Hunton series (Siluro-Devonian) produced most of the oil with considerable gas. In July, 1934, a well in sec. 25, T.2N., R.6E. was completed in the Bromide (Ordovician " Wilcox ") with an initial production of about 300 bbl. a day. Less than a month later a second Bromide sand well was completed in sec. 30, T.2N., R.7E., which made over 200 bbl. an hour. This started an active drilling campaign, which was accelerated when some of the major companies paid good prices for adjacent acreage. At the end of the year, 23 wells had been completed and the rate of development was increasing rapidly. It is a major oil field. The Fitts pool opened a new geological province for oil production. The structure is a faulted anticline in a graben. The producing formation (Bromide) and the Arbuckle lime below it crop out about 2 miles south of present production. The Hunton lime crops out about 2½ miles north. The field is in a sharply folded and faulted area on the northeast side of the Arbuckle uplift. Heretofore, it was generally considered not favorable for oil production, although some gas had been found in various places. NATURAL stone or manufactured porcelain pebbles are used as the grinding elements in pebble mills and the mills are lined with stone or porcelain blocks. Steel balls usually form the grinding medium in ball mills, and the mills may he lined with steel. Pebble mills are used to avoid contamination by metal of the material being ground, to avoid rapid wear due to corrosion, and for other specialized reasons. Belgian silex (silica) blocks formerly were used widely for lining pebble mills, because of their good resistance to wear, light color, and low cost, but the importation of these blocks was suspended early in the war. The stocks of Belgian silex diminished so rapidly that it was found desirable to compare the properties of a number of domestic substitutes for use in critical operations. Accordingly, a study was made to determine the best substitutes for fine grinding of white pigment and for certain heavy-chemical process work such as the disintegration of phosphate rock in weak phosphoric acid solution. A comprehensive survey of substitute lining materials was not contemplated. It was stipulated at the beginning of the investigation that only materials on the market, available in large quantities, would be tested and that these should be reasonable substitutes from a wear-resistance viewpoint as determined from known physical characteristics. Marble and limestone, for example, could be eliminated immediately. Quartzite, granite and porcelain were selected as likely substitutes for Belgian silex and were subjected to quality tests. MATERIALS TESTED I. Belgian Silex.-Sample blocks of a standard grade were taken from crates in which they had been imported. The stone was light gray in color and contained inclusions of small clusters of quartz crystals as well as light colored portions that might be calcite. This was a siliceous rock which appeared to be of igneous origin. 2. Quartzite.-Samples of quartzite were obtained from a quarry in Minnesota. The blocks exhibited a crystalline fracture. The stone was pink in color and composed of fine quartz crystals bound together with a siliceous cement. 3. Granite A was a fine-grained granite quarried in South Carolina. 4. Granite B was coarse-grained granite quarried in South Carolina. 5. Granite C was a coarse-grained granite quarried in North Carolina. 6. Porcelain A.-Sample blocks of the pebble-mill lining material were obtained direct from the manufacturer. It was white in color and of lower specific gravity than the natural materials. The "(3034) " twin lamellae in magnesium have been reexamined using electron microscope replicas. The double twinning sequence (1011)- (1012) for these lamellae has been reconfirmed. Evidence is presented showing that the irrational habit of these twins is probably the direct result of a need to accommodate the second-order twinning shear. This accommodation vesults in both an external shear in the matrix and an internal shear in the lamella. A model is presented which accounts for the experimental obseruations. HCP metals are generally characterized by strong textures in which the basal planes of the grains tend to be aligned parallel to the rolling direction in sheet or plate and to the axis of wires and rods. Since these directions are normally those in which finished products may be subjected to uniaxial tensile stress, these textures effectively place the crystals of magnesium objects in orientations unfavorable to both basal slip and {1012) twinning, the easily activated deformation systems of this metal. However, when magnesium crystals are deformed near room temperature by a tensile stress nearly parallel to the basal plane, another mode of deformation can occur.',2 This is _a double twin which forms first by twinning on {loll), followed by retwinning on (1012). The resulting twin lamellae are of considerable interest. First, they can be responsible for "brittle fracture''; when a tensile stress axis lies in the basal plane, because the reoriented crystal structure of a lamella is well-aligned for slip while the parent crystal is not. Extensive internal deformation may thus occur while the matrix is still almost undeformed. This deformation can produce a ductile rupture running the length of the twin.3 Complete failure of the specimen may then oc-cure by the spreading of cracks from one twin lamella to another, or by the movement of a crack into a grain boundary and then along grain boundaries. Since the the volume fraction of these doubly twinned elements is normally very small, the fracture may be classed as brittle, although the fracture mechanism is, of itself, essentially ductile. It is quite probable that the ductility transition, normally observed4 in magnesium at or slightly Obove room temperature, is closely associated with these second-order twins. The detailed relationship of these twins to fracture in single crystals will be the topic of another paper. The present paper is concerned with a second important aspect: the irrational habit of these double twins that falls close to {3034), or approximately 7 deg away from the primary (10il) twin habit. During the past year and a half, the Territorial Department of Mines in Alaska has conducted a modest experimental program for the purpose of determining the extent to which magnetic and resistivity methods can be used in interior Alaska in connection with prospecting, mining and geological studies. Since little information is available concerning previous work,l,2 and since conditions differ considerably from those in most other regions, it was considered advisable to make a general study of the possibilities and limitations of the two methods, rather than a detailed study of any single problem. Problems One of the most serious handicaps to prospecting and geological study in interior Alaska, especially in the mature regions, is a cover of unconsolidated deposits ranging in thickness from a few feet to several hundred feet. These deposits, some of which are permanently frozen, consist of silt with varying proportions of vegetation and windblown material in the valleys and of residual deposits on the hills.3'4 The problems treated here are caused by the existence of this overburden: I. Location of buried placers. 2. Determination of depth and areal distribution of permanently frozen and of thawed unconsolidated deposits. 3. Location of water-bearing beds under unconsolidated deposits. Instruments and Methods Magnetic and direct-current resistivity methods were used because they are relatively simple, rapid and inexpensive and because generally they are well suited to the study of the problems indicated. The instruments used were a vertical Schmidt-type magnetometer and a direct-current resistivity instrument similar to those used by the Geophysical Branch of the U. S. Geological Survey. For placer surveys with the magnetometer, a sensitivity of about 25 gammas per scale division was found suitable. For resistivity studies of frozen and thawed overburden and of underground water, the Lee partitioning method6 was found to be most generally suitable. In the Lee method a central potential electrode is placed midway between the two potential electrodes of the Wenner four-electrode configuration.7 Nonpolarizable electrodes were made from unglazed porcelain pots about 10 cm. high and 5 cm. in diameter. In order to retard evaporation of the electrolyte the sides of the pots were glazed, inside and out, with clear Duco lacquer. For resistivity work in cold weather, a nonfreezing electrolyte consisting of equal parts of ethylene glycol and a saturated water solution of copper sulphate proved satisfactory. Stainless steel rods of 3/4-in. diameter made excellent current electrodes because their bright finish enabled good ground contacts to be made.

Book Review Mexico, TODAY AND Tomorrow. By E. D. Trowbridge, Detroit. The McMillan Co., New York, 1919, 353 pp., 7;2 X 5 in. $2.00. The first eight chapters are devoted to an historical narrative of the Mexican peoples from the earliest times to the close of the war with the United States in 1345. "In dealing with events antedating what may be termed modern Mexico" the author has "made no attempt at original research, and so far as concerns anything prior to 1900, the work here presented is a repetition, a reflection, of the findings of opinions of Fiske, Prescott, Bancroft, Luis Perez Verdia and other authorities." The remainder of the hook deals with Mexico during and since the Diaz regime. It is interesting throughout but is not always convincing or consistent. Social conditions are described in a way illuminating and possible only to one who is familiar with the peon and his hitherto seemingly hopeless position in reference to the wage system and church oppression. In fact, the author makes the hold accusation that the "primitive rather than immoral" condition of the peons in the matter of their marital relations is due to the disregard of the church for their welfare and capabilities. The true accounts of the Madero revolution and the Huerta regime read like fascinating medieval fiction. The reason given for men remaining in the Madero army is still the controlling one regarding any of the armies there. "They had horses, arms, all the food they wanted, money to spend and no work." The discussion of Mexican financial schemes is wholly from the Carranza viewpoint. To meet a monthly deficit of ten million pesos the author says "the government forced loans from the National Bank, and Bank of London and Mexico, and repeated the operation several times, finally practically exhausting their bullion and cash reserves. Hostile foreigners refer to this operation as the looting of the hanks! Drastic as this action was, there was good ground on which to justify it." However, that necessity knows no law is never an acceptable tenet except to him who applies the screws. The discussion of the economic problems and their solution is rather chimerical and presupposes a civil and national virtue in the present government not discernible except to one ultra friendly. The book is an interesting exposition of the very much involved situation from the viewpoint of approval of both the Carranza government and the attitude of the United States in its dealings with him. The editing of the book leaves something to he desired. P. E. B.

THE total production of crude oil in Texas during 1924 was said to be 133,613,985 bbl. as compared with 125,991,628 bbl. in 1923.1 Subtracting from these figures the yield of the Gulf Coast fields, there remains, for the other part. of Texas, a yield of 106,272,573 bbl. in 1924, as compared with 101,931,595 bbl. in 1923. This represents an increased, production of over 4,250,000 bbl. for all of Texas outside of the Gulf Coast or Salt Dome fields. Within this same region, in 1924, there were 3624 completions, of which 2352 were oil or oil and gas wells, 7 were gassers, and 1265 were dry holes. Thus, nearly 35 per cent. of the completions were dry holes. In 1923, there were 4134 completions, with 2853 oil or oil and gas wells, 2 gas wells, and 1279, or 31 per cent. of the total, dry holes. Outside of the Gulf Coast region, six major pools were discovered and developed in 1924.; two pools, previously discovered, were extended far beyond their limits at the end of 1923, and many smaller pools were opened. The major pools were the Big Lake field, in Reagan Co., the New Richland field, in Navarro Co., the Harmel, Carey, and Ragle pools, in south Archer County, and the Wortham field, in Freestone and Limestone Counties. Fields that were notably extended were the Panhandle producing area and the Luling field. Many wildcat wells have been drilled; most -of these were failures, but several opened .pools and several have had sufficiently favorable results to. lead to further drilling. The activity of the operators in searching for new production was very intense during 1924, and indications point to as feverish a campaign during the coming year. This will be stimulated by rising prices for crude oil. There are good reasons for believing that new pools will be discovered along the Mexia fault zone, in Archer, Young, Baylor, and Throckmorton Counties, in the great central region of Texas where we now have the Mitchell County and Reagan County pools, and very likely in the eastern Red River Counties including Cooke and Grayson. On the other hand, with the opening of the year, there is no new big pool in sight. An outstanding feature of the production end of the business is the increasing reliance placed on geological work and geological recommendations. Not in five or six years has there been such a demand for first-class geologists.

Although 1930 has been a year of stagnation, proration and curtailment, the Gulf Coast has measured up to its tradition in the matter of interesting and significant discoveries. Only 2 domes and 7 new structural areas were brought into the producing column in 1930, whereas, in 1929, 13 domes and one structure were added to this list, yet a total of 14 new producing horizons were proved on various domes and structures. On 5 domes new flanks were successfully tested for commercial production. The year 1930 has shown at Barber's Hill that oil in commercial quantities may exist below salt or cap. Numerous wells have been drilled through cap, or even salt itself, into good producing sands. The past year has been particularly notable in the interest and in the number of deep holes drilled. Two wells have gone below 8000 ft. in each of the states of Texas and Louisiana, and in the two states together 14 wells have gone below 7000 ft At the beginning of the year only one well was producing below 6000 ft. in coastal Texas, while at its end, 19 wells were producing or had produced. Geophysical discoveries and activity on the Coast have waned and this type of work has moved further inland. The peaks of production at Pettus, Barber's Hill, Raccoon Bend, Refugio, Orchard and at Humble, in Texas; and at Lake Barre, Port Barre, Black Bayou, White Castle and Vinton in Louisiana, were seen this year. These were new peaks for Humble and Vinton, of course, these fields having previously gone through periods of peak flank production. In Table 1 the completions listed are for the entire month of December in both years. It is remarkable that in 1930, a year of overproduction and proration, there were actually more wildcat operations at its end than at the end of 1929; but it is gratifying that the operations in the proven fields were exactly one-half what they had been at the end of 1929. The price of A grade coastal crude, or oil below 25" Bé., has been cut from $1.30 at the beginning of the year to $1.00 at its close; and B grade, or oil above 25o Bé., has been reduced from a price range of $1.15 to $1.63 down to a range of from $0.75 to $1.22. ON JUNE 7 the German Government handed to the French and Belgians a new proposal for reparations, which offered 1,200,000,000 gold marks annually, to be guaranteed as to 500,000,000 by a mortgage on the national railways, as to another 500,000,000 by a mortgage on industry, commerce, land and factories, and as to 200,000,000 by a luxury tax. The number of years for which this payment should run to be left to settlement by an international conference. This offer was taken under consideration by the French and Belgians, who instituted conversa-tions with the British in the hope of arriving, at some joint action with respect to the Germans. Up to the end of June nothing had been determined. In the meanwhile, the continued French and Belgian occupation of the Ruhr seemed to develop a condition of guerilla warfare, considerable bloodshed occurring throughout the region. The second Lausanne Conference dragged on, the Allies being apparently unable to take any firm, joint stand, while the Turks increased their importunities and managed to get concession after concession. Early in June a revolution occurred in Bulgaria, the previous Government under Premier Stambulisky, based on the agrarian party, being forcibly thrown out by a bourgeois and military combination. This pro-duced considerable disorder in Bulgaria, outside of which country the nature and purpose of the revolution does not appear to be well understood. Stambulisky's partisans offered feeble, isolated resistance to the revolu-tion; in connection with which there was some blood-shed and Stambulisky himself was reported killed, although this was later contradicted. Professor Zan-kof, the new Premier, issued a statement, that the change of the Government was the result of discontent, that the foreign policy of the new Government would be peaceful, and that Bulgaria would continue to fulfill her international obligations, particularly the treaty of Neuilly. It was the opinion of London that the immu-nity from taxation enjoyed by the farmers under the agrarian regime is likely to he superseded by more equi-table taxation, and in general that the bourgeoisie will be better administrators of the public affairs In domestic affairs industrial activity continued at a high rate, but there was distinct relaxation in the demand for raw materials, and also in some manufac-tured goods. During June there were reductions of prices by many of the automobile tire manufacturers. There seemed to be also further contraction in the demand for automobiles.

AS part of a research project sponsored by the Signal Corps Engineering Laboratories, which had the objective of obtaining a magnet wire of good conductivity and low temperature coefficient of resistance, a comprehensive literature survey, supplemented by experimental work, revealed that a linear relationship exists for solid-solution alloys between the electrical conductivity, K, and the temperature coefficient, a, as expressed by the equation: k = a/ß where ß is constant for the solvent metal and a - per°C. tR0 It has long been known that the electrical conductivity at a given temperature and the temperature coefficient of resistance of binary alloys are related to their constitution by the LeChatelier-Guertler rules, as illustrated by Figs. 1 and 2: Rule 1—In alloy systems consisting of a heterogeneous mixture of two phases, the electrical conductivity and temperature coefficient vary as a straight line, if the composition of the alloys is given in volume percentage, Fig. 1. Rule 2—In solid solutions, the electrical conductivity and temperature coefficient are always lower than those of the solvent metal, and usually a considerable decrease occurs with the first small percentage additions of the solute metal, Fig. 2b. If the two components form a continuous series of solid solutions, the electrical conductivity and temperature coefficient curves take the form of a U-curve, Fig. 2a. That some kind of proportionality exists between electrical conductivity and temperature coefficient of resistance is implied by the LeChatelier-Guertler rules and by study of data such as those given by Smith and Palmer,' Fig. 3. Dellinger2 in 1910 first recognized this relationship in a number of commercial copper wires, ranging in conductivity from 94 to 100.7 pct I.A.C.S. He gave the ratio of temperature coefficient to the percentage of conductivity as a constant, C = 0.003939. A year later, Lindeck observed that the linear relationship was valid for a wider range of conductivity in "various sorts of copper," and concluded that the product of resistivity and temperature coefficient was 6.78x10-5 1.5 pct. Since then, this relationship seems to have been entirely ignored. Conductivity-Temperature Coefficient Relationship If the electrical conductivity of copper solid-solution alloys with phosphorus, silicon, arsenic, antimony, aluminum, nickel, manganese, and iron is plotted against the temperature coefficient of these alloys, the diagrams in Figs. 4 and 5 are obtained. Similar data were found with copper-rich solid solutions containing magnesium, cobalt, and titanium,'" as shown in Fig. 6. In all cases, a linear relationship exists. The following additional notes about prices of coal in the early days were collected from the sources shown. Several data about canal tolls and labor conditions are also included. 1796, November: "The inhabitants lay it (coal) in at about 3;d. (83¢) sterling per bushel." (Ref. 73: p. 147.) 1804, March: "In March, 1804, I sent a person accustomed to mining to open the vein of coal, and to load the ark, which was accomplished, and early in the month of April the ark, with the first cargo of bituminous coal passed safely the Conewago falls, and landed her coal at Columbia, Lancaster County. The coal was sold at 31¢ per bushel at Columbia." ($7.75 per ton). This was the first coal from Clearfield County near the town of that name. (Letter from William Boyd: Pa. Senate Jour., 1833-1834, vol. 2, p. 561.) 1807: The following notice appeared in the Bedford Gazette: "Huntingdon, June 4. DURING the past year and a half, the Territorial Department of Mines in Alaska has conducted a modest experimental program for the purpose of determining the extent to which magnetic and resistivity methods can be used in interior Alaska in connection with prospecting, mining and geological studies. Since little information is available concerning previous work,1,2 and since conditions differ considerably from those in most other regions, it was considered advisable to make a general study of the possibilities and limitations of the two methods, rather than a detailed study of any single problem. PROBLEMS One of the most serious handicaps to prospecting and geological study in interior Alaska, especially in the mature regions, is a cover of unconsolidated deposits ranging in thickness from a few feet to several hundred feet. These deposits, some of which are permanently frozen, consist of silt with varying proportions of vegetation and windblown material in the valleys and of residual deposits on the hills.3,4 The problems treated here are caused by the existence of this overburden: I. Location of buried placers. 2. Determination of depth and areal distribution of permanently frozen and of thawed unconsolidated deposits. 3. Location of water-bearing beds under unconsolidated deposits. INSTRUMENTS AND METHODS Magnetic and direct-current resistivity methods were used because they are relatively simple, rapid and inexpensive and because generally they are well suited to the study of the problems indicated. The instruments used were a vertical Schmidt-type magnetometer and a direct-current resistivity instrument similar to those used by the Geophysical Branch of the U. S. Geological Survey.5 For placer surveys with the magnetometer, a sensitivity of about 25 gammas per scale division was found suitable. For resistivity studies of frozen and thawed overburden and of underground water, the Lee partitioning method6 was found to be most generally suitable. In the Lee method a central potential electrode is placed midway between the two potential electrodes of the Wenner four-electrode configuration.7 Nonpolarizable electrodes were made from unglazed porcelain pots about 10 cm. high and 5 cm. in diameter. In order to retard evaporation of the electrolyte the sides of the pots were glazed, inside and out, with clear Duco lacquer. For resistivity work in cold weather, a nonfreezing electrolyte consisting of equal parts of ethylene glycol and a saturated water solution of copper sulphate proved satisfactory. Stainless steel rods of 3/4-in. diameter made excellent current electrodes because their bright finish enabled good ground contacts to be made.

Frontino operates three underground lode mines at Segovia in the area of northwest Antioquia, Colombia, which has been an important gold producing district since the late 1800s. Auriferous pyrite, the pre-dominent sulfide, carries very finely disseminated gold. Other minor sulfides are galena, pyrrhotite, and sphalerite in quartz gangue with the host rock being granodiorite. Silver is associated with the galena and also occurs as a sulfo-salt. In 1.973 and 1974, at an annual milling rate of 145,000 mt (160,000 st), average mill heads were 7.80 g per mt (0.23 oz per st) Au; 20.0 g per mt (0.58 oz per st) Ag; and 0.37% Pb; with a production of 1,150 kg (35,700 oz) Au and 4,500 kg (141,000 oz) Ag. Over 300 mt (330 st) of Pb concentrate were shipped. The ore is crushed to minus 16 mm (5 18 in. ) and fed to a rod mill with the discharge passing over a 1.07 m by 1.07 m (42 in. by 42 in. ) jig operating in closed circuit with the underflow from a cyclone in closed circuit with two ball mills. Cyclone overflow is bulk-floated for sulfide recovery from which the tailings are sent to the river as waste with the flotation concentrate joining the jig concentrate for cyanidation. The combined gold bearing concentrates, after cyclone classification, are reground to a very fine mesh in closed circuit with cyclone classification, with the overflow going to the primary thickener. Regrinding, classification, and thickening is done in cyanide solution, and the primary thickener produces a pregnant solution for Merrill -Crowe precipitation. The thickener underflow is the feed to the agitators, thickener, and filter from which the overflow and filtrate are sent to precipitation. The washed filter cake is repulped and floated for the recovery of a galena concentrate for shipment. About 40% of the recovered silver is in this concentrate. In the refinery the precipitate is melted into a dore bullion. This 600 mt (660 st) capacity mill employs several interesting techniques. Gold recovery of 85% to 90% from a complex sulfide denotes good practice. While total power at 42 kwh per mt (46 kwh per st) is high, it would be recognized that the grinding units are small in size and the flowsheet is complicated due to the gold occurring in the sulfide minerals. Natural stone or manufactured porcelain pebbles are used as the grinding elements in pebble mills and the mills are lined with stone or porcelain blocks. Steel balls usually form the grinding medium in ball mills, and the mills may be lined with steel. Pebble mills are used to avoid contamination by metal of the material being ground, to avoid rapid wear due to corrosion, and for other specialized reasons. Belgian silex (silica) blocks formerly were used widely for lining pebble mills, because of their good resistance to wear, light color, and low cost, but the importation of these blocks was suspended early in the war. The stocks of Belgian silex diminished so rapidly that it was found desirable to compare the properties of a number of domestic substitutes for use in critical operations. Accordingly, a study was made to determine the best substitutes for fine grinding of white pigment and for certain heavy-chemical process work such as the disintegration of phosphate rock in weak phosphoric acid solution. A comprehensive survey of substitute lining materials was not contemplated. It was stipulated at the beginning of the investigation that only materials on the market, available in large quantities, would be tested and that these should be reasonable substitutes from a wear-resistance viewpoint as determined from known physical characteristics. Marble and limestone, for example, could be eliminated immediately. Quartzite, granite and porcelain were selected as likely substitutes for Belgian silex and were subjected to quality tests. Materials Tested 1. Belgian Si1ex.—Sample blocks of a standard grade were taken from crates in which they had been imported. The stone was light gray in color and contained inclusions of small clusters of quartz crystals as well as light colored portions that might be calcite. This was a siliceous rock which appeared to be of igneous origin. 2. Quartzite.—Samples of quartzite were obtained from a quarry in Minnesota. The blocks exhibited a crystalline fracture. The stone was pink in color and composed of fine quartz crystals bound together with a siliceous cement. 3. Granite A was a fine-grained granite quarried in South Carolina. 4. Granite B was coarse-grained granite quarried in South Carolina. 5. Granite C was a coarse-grained granite quarried in North Carolina. 6. Porcelain A.—Sample blocks of the pebble-mill lining material were obtained direct from the manufacturer. It was white in color and of lower specific gravity than the natural materials. POPULAR opinion, as it might be termed, has always been of the trend that a flotation reagent added to the ball mill during grinding would be more thoroughly mixed with the pulp and for that reason more effective in the production of low tailing. That there are other effects, inimical to good flotation, when using so-called chemical reagents, is brought out by the series of tests outlined in Table 2. It was defi-nitely proved that if either the T. T. mixture (20 per cent thiocarbanalid-80 per cent orthotoluidin) or po-tassium xanthate were added to the ball mill the result-ing flotation concentrate would be lower in copper and higher in insoluble than the concentrate produced by adding these same reagents without the ball mill cir-cuit. With the T. T. mixture four sets of tests were made. The screen analyses of the flotation feed show that there was very little difference in the original grind-ing. When the T. T. mixture was added to the head of the flotation machine the flotation concentrate had a little over 61 per cent solids -200 mesh. If the mix-ture was put into the ball mill the flotation concentrate had but 40.7 per cent of the solids -200 mesh for one set of tests, and 49.0 per cent for the other set. With the mixture at the head of flotation the total concen-trate was high in copper (34.715 and 36.525 per cent) and low in insoluble (13.20 and 11.61 per cent). The assay of the concentrate when the T. T. mixture was introduced into the ball mill was what might be termed low in copper (29.389 and 30.833 per cent). In one of these 'sets of tests (periods 8 to 11, third column) the insoluble was high, 16.81 per cent. The other run (peri-ods 12 to 15, fourth column) for some unknown reason shows a low insoluble, 12.72 per cent. With similar grinding the addition of potassium xan-thate to flotation produced a concentrate having 62.8 per cent -200 mesh, whereas with the potassium xanthate added to the ball mill the flotation concentrate was very coarse, only 36.4 per cent passing 200 mesh. The difference in the total assay of the concentrate is remarkable ; 35.847 per cent copper when the xanthate went to flotation and 30.44 per cent copper when the xanthate was added to the ball mill; insoluble, 10.94 per cent in the former instance, as 22.15 per cent in the latter.
