Statistical data on the Polish producing business are available only for the first half of 1939. Because of the invasion of the country during September by Germany and Russia all sources of information have stopped, and it is impossible to get even an approximate picture of the status of the industry after that date. The long declining trend of Polish production, which was finally checked during 1938, kept a further upward tendency during the first half of 1939, and there is good reason to believe that the upward trend would have been maintained. It is true, there was little hope of reviving the slowly dying Boryslaw field, although there still remained a slight possibility for an extension in its southwestern direction. Repressuring plans were still discussed, but. could not be put into effect because of extremely complicated and split-up lease ownership. The Gorlice-Lipinki ficld continued to be the main factor in the increase of the country's production. During the first half of 1939 this field received a further important extension in a southern direction. The Schodnica field continued to use repressuring with success. At the end of June, 21 exploratory wells were drilling, 14 of which were within thc Carpathians and 7 in the Miocene geosyncline of the Carpathian Foreland. All of the wildcat wells drilled within the Carpathians were on the struct,ural cxtcnsion of old established fields, but part of the wildcats of the Foreland were on new geological and geophysical prospects. The Opary gas field of the Foreland discovered last year has been further developed. The Government-owned Polmin completed its third gasser. This well penetrated two sands; the upper one, 118 ft. thick, was found at 1312 ft., with an initial pressure of 570 lb. and capable of produeiring 10 million cu. ft. per day. The second sand, 91 ft. thick, was found at 1690 ft., yielding 20 million cu. ft., with a pressure of 760 lb. The well Mieczyslaw, drilled about 3 miles further north on the flank of the structurc, found the first sand watered. The Pioneer No. 5, at Chodonice near Przemysl, which reported somc gas last year, was 5696 ft. deep at the end of June, still drilling in Miocene. Anothe well in the same vicinity drilled by the Gasolina was 1708ft. deep.

AT the joint session of Blast Furnace and Open Hearth Committees, April 7, 1937, at Birmingham, the subject of the quality of basic open-hearth pig iron was so well presented and discussed from so many different viewpoints that it was the general opinion that progress had been made and that such meetings were conducive to the advancement of the art of making pig iron of the right quality for the open-hearth man to produce the most satisfactory quality of steel. It was agreed that there is a decided differentiation between the chemical analysis of pig iron and the "quality" of pig iron. Paul J. McKim said that open-hearth furnace operators frequently make reference to certain types of iron as "bad iron," "dirty iron," "cold metal," etc., claiming that when using these irons, although they are within specified chemical analysis, it is impossible to produce quality steel. Mr. McKim gave a list of the suggested causes of those "certain types" of bad irons that have a thoroughly respectable analysis but a thoroughly disreputable character. Another open-hearth man, P. A. MacIsaac, of Nova Scotia, said that The effects of iron that is below standard in analysis or in that mysterious property called quality, are well known to all open-hearth operators. It has been shown that iron of this type results in the production of steels on which the rejections of finished product run high. What is to be done about it? I would say that the burden of producing high-quality iron should be placed squarely on the shoulders of the blast furnace man, even as that of making good steel is shouldered by the open-hearth man. It is the purpose of this paper to bring out into the open this "mysterious property called quality"; that is, in those "certain types" of basic pig iron that make it impossible to produce quality steels; and at the same time to point the way for the blast-furnace man to be able to shoulder the burden that Mr. MacIsaac and all other open-hearth men and foundry-men have placed upon him. Aside from having a usable product and good mining conditions, the greatest asset for a profitable coal mining organization is an effective mine maintenance program. The first step in acquiring this is the presence of good mechanics-men who have a desire to be mechanics and who want to know more about the design and control of the machines in their charge. The knowledge and ability to be found in a good mechanic is the result of ambition, curiosity, and determination. With these qualities as a start, the aspiring mechanic can launch his career if he begins learning all he can about mechanics, electricity, and hydraulics. The path is rough, but the goal is rewarding. Mining machinery probably absorbs as much or more abuse than any other heavy equipment in use today. And when one considers the conditions under which much of the repair work must be done, it can be seen that the mine operator needs the best of men and tools to perform the service. MOTORS AND POWER SUPPLY Mining machines, from their inception, have utilized the electric motor; and down through the years of mechanization, this power source has undergone many changes to better adapt it to the job. The first motors used were large, heavy-framed, open d-c motors (direct current), using a series or shunt winding. A motor having one or more field coils connected in series and themselves in series with the armature, is called a series motor (Fig. 1). The series motor had the advantage of quickly developing starting torque, and it was, and still is, the best motor for locomotive or shuttle car tramming service. A good place to look for elephants is in elephant country, and old mining districts are certainly elephant country as far as minerals are concerned. In many areas probably more ore is still in the ground than has been taken out. The old timers were good miners and hard workers and when they left ore behind, it was usually for good reason; but many an old mining district has been revived by new approaches to old problems, taking advantage of new techniques and new equipment. One of these is the Front Range mineral belt of Colorado, which has produced minerals for the past 100 years through the ups and downs of mineral prices and the general economy. Gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc have been found in abundance in the complex sulfide veins of the area. Between Idaho Springs and Central City lie several strong veins which have been mined successfully in the past. The two strongest of these veins, striking northeast-southwest, (Lake-Bald Eagle), and northwest-southeast, (Crown Point-Belman) , and dipping northeast and northwest, respectively, intersect in a flat X near the head of Virginia Canyon. From the lowest drainage of the area, Clear Creek Canyon, the old timers drove the Central, or Big Five, haulage-drainage tunnel due north. It intersects the two veins 8460 ft from the portal and 1670 ft below the surface. The two veins were mined successfully at the surface and at the tunnel level. Without an opening to the surface at the in- side end of the tunnel, ventilating became very difficult as the stopes were opened up, and mining ceased in 1929. Vertically, 1200 to 1600 ft of virgin ground remains in the veins.

In view of the good results which have followed the wide discussion of the rail-specifications of the American Section of the International Association for Testing Materials, I now offer for discussion its specifications for steel forgings and steel castings. It is not necessary to emphasize the importance of reaching definite conclusions on these subjects. Engineers, consumers and manufacturers are alike interested in securing good, reliable, uniform steel. In this connection, I would call particular attention to the important paper read by Mr. C. H. Ridsdale, last September, before the Iron and Steel Institute, as bearing on them; and, for convenience of reference in the discussion, I append the Table in Section VI. of his paper, on a Manifestations, Classified mider Heads of Faults of Different Types. appearing after Treatment by the User, for Tracing their Probable Source."* The discussion of these specifications will be practically a continuation of our former discussions on "The Physics of Steel." We have passed through a period in which the chemical composition of steel has received the greatest prominence; but failures of steel forgings and castings of the best chemical composition have shown that we could not control the quality of the finished product by the chemical composition alone. It must be admitted that differences in the physical properties of the steel, greater than those due to small variations in composition,are produced by heat-treatment, both in connection with the mechanical work of forging and otherwise. The present result is a strong tendency to deem the heat-treatment more important than the chemical composition. I think the mean course is the safer. We should give them equal importance; for we know that to produce the best results me must start with a good

Streams and rivers are the principal channels into which the weathering products of rocks and their contained ores are funneled. The inorganic load of a stream system is a crude sample of all the earth materials in the drainage basin of the stream, and the heavy mineral assemblage of sediments is one of the oldest and most successful guides to certain kinds of bedrock ore in unexplored terrain. Early application of this method was made possible by the ease of separation and identification of heavy minerals in the field with the simplest equipment. Water analysis for traces of base metals became a practical possibility about eight years ago with the development of rapid chemical tests that could be carried out at the field site. Since that time the water method has been widely used in mineral reconnaissance, and a substantial number of discoveries have been reported. Here again, the techniques developed for this work were relatively simple and could be performed easily at the field site.

Johnstown is the site of the extensive iron, steel, and wire-works of the Cambria Iron Company. It is situated at the western base of the Alleghany Mountain, 275 miles from Philadelphia, and 78 miles from Pittsburgh. The valley in which the town and its ironworks are located, has an average elevation of 1160 feet above tide water. Johnstown, in its main features, is a modified duplicate of Pittsburgh. It is located at the confluence of the Little Conemaugh and Stony Creek rivers, which, by their union, form the Conemaugh River, just as Pittsburgh is situated at the junction of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers, which together make the Ohio River. The site of Johnstown is in a cutting through the lower productive coal measures, 500 c feet deep, with steep slopes along the valleylimits, exposing, in sharp-cut terraces, the outcrops of the coal and iron-ore beds; the whole surmounted by the shales and sandstones of the barren measures.

(Pittsburg meeting, March, 1910.) THE recovery of gold and silver from their ores by means of the cyanide process has been so successful in the last few years that any radical improvement would seem impossible; yet the appliance to which I wish to call attention in this paper is really a radical departure from the methods now in general use. The most modern and approved of these, known as the all-sliming method, depends for its success on the grinding of the. ore so fine that practically 90 per cent. of it will pass through a 200-mesh screen. The slimes thus produced are then agitated and aerated in tanks of various types. The main object of this treatment is to insure such a thorough admixture of the pulp and solution that every particle of the ore is surrounded by a volume of solution sufficient to insure the dissolving of the whole of the gold- and silver-content. In addition, in order to expedite the action of the cyanide, and to oxidize such elements as would, if left in their active state, become cyanicides, air is blown in under pressure. In the Pachuca tank, this air is the active and sole means of agitation. The chief objections to all the methods off agitation used heretofore are the expense of operating and maintaining the mechanical devices for keeping the pulp in suspension, and the length of time required to obtain a fairly complete extraction. of the values. These objections are inherent to any method of agitation effecting a circulation of the pulp and the solution together, by giving the whole mass a circular movement, as in the low-tank system, or a vertical circulation, as in the Pachuca-tank system. The results of the cyanide-operations, given in detail in the following paper, show the progress that is being made at the Minas del Tajo. The old pan-amalgamation process, in operation up to and including 1905, while paying a profit on high-grade ores, was no longer able to treat profitably the ores in sight at that time; hence an alteration in the process was imperative. SELF-DIFFUSION of iron in austenite is a process which may play a significant role in some of the practically important reactions which occur in solid irons and steels. It also provides a system in which the interaction of vacancies on substitutional sites and atoms in interstitial positions may be investigated. For both purposes, accurate values of the diffusivities are required. Two sets of previous measurements exist, each containing features which require checking. In the course of an investigation to determine the rate of diffusion of iron in certain steels, Garwick and Rosenqvist' measured the self-diffusion coefficient of iron in a 0.10 pct* C steel and obtained a dicated that while at lower temperatures D increased with increasing carbon content, at the higher temperatures it first increased and then decreased. At the same time the activation energy decreased linearly from a value of 69,000 cal per g-atom for pure iron to 33,000 cal per g-atom at 1.06 pct C. This rapid decrease in activation energy implies that iron at higher temperatures within the austenite range would diffuse more slowly in high carbon steels than in steels of lower carbon content. Experimental Procedure The radioactive iron used in this work was obtained from Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The unit consisted of about 1 microcurie each of Fe7 and Fe It was allowed to decay for two years. At the end of this time most of the Fe with a half-life of 46.3 days, had decayed, while most of the original Fe(half-life 2.91 years) still remained. The iron as chloride was extracted into an ether layer, using the method of Ashley and M~rray. After evaporation of the ether the iron chloride was dissolved in 250 ml of aqueous solution containing 2.4 gpl Fe. The compositions of the steels used are listed in Table I. Disks of ¾ in. diam and about ¼ in. thick were machined from these steels for use in diffusion couples. The disks were surface ground on both sides to ensure parallel opposite faces. The production of petroleum in Argentina during 1932 was greater than in any preceding year. The total amount produced was 13,012,-756 bbl. This figure represents a decided increase in the production of oil in Argentina and can be attributed largely to the increased activities of the Royal Dutch operations at Kilometer 27 in the Comodoro Rivadavia district and those of the Standard Oil Co. of Argentina in the Salta region. Production from the Royal Dutch wells amounted to considerably more than 10,000 bbl. per day over quite a long period during the year. Of the 13,012,756 bbl. of oil produced during 1932, the Government Agency (Y. P. F.) was responsible for some 5,578,954 bbl., while 7,433,-802 bbl. were produced by private companies. Although in 1930 the Y. P. F. produced about 55 per cent of the total production and in 1930 50 per cent of the total, in 1932 its production had fallen to about 42 1/2 per cent of the total. This decrease in the proportion produced by the Y. P. F. was not due to a decrease in its production but to the decided increase in the production of private companies, particularly those two whose names are given above. One new discovery was recorded during the year. This was a well drilled by the Y. P. F. at Cacheuta in the province of Mendoza which came in pumping 80 bbl. of 15" gravity oil from a depth of 673 meters. This well was completed at approximately the same time that the provincial government of Mendoza granted a concession to the Y. P. F. and declared the whole province as a reserve in which no concessions may be granted for a period of 10 years. Under these conditions, the federally operated Y. P. F. will have no competition in the Cacheuta area from private companies such as they have in the other three fields of the republic. The Y. P. F. wildcat west of Comodoro Rivadavia at Pampa Maria Santissima on the Rio Senguerr was completed as a dry hole during 1932. This we11 was reported as a producer in 1930 by persons returning to this country from Argentina but it appears that they had been misinformed. The site of this test has been abandoned and a new location made north of the Rio Senguerr.

The Salida smelting plant, owned by the Ohio & Colorado Smelting & Refining Co., is situated at an altitude of 7,000 ft., about 2 miles west of Salida, Colo., and 215 miles southwest of Denver. Salida is a division point on the Denver & Rio Grande R. R. where the narrow-gage line serving the San Juan region joins the through standard gage. This narrow-gage road also serves the coal and coke companies at Crested Butte and the lime quarries and mines at Monarch and Garfield, which are only 20 miles distant. These facts, together with the possibility of an appropriate site, doubtless influenced the builders to locate at this point. The smelting plant and yard occupy 80 acres of land on the northeast side of the Arkansas River. The slope of the ground is such as to permit of the ore being delivered by cars at a point 25 ft. above the feed floor; and in front of the furnaces there is a fall of 50 ft. for the slag dump. A recent purchase of river bottom has provided slag room for 20 years. As originally constructed, the plant consisted of four blast furnaces, 40 by 144 in. at tuyéres, two copper-matting furnaces, dust chamber, stack, power plant, blowers, sampling works, and one railroad trestle about 16 ft. from bed floor to rails. Later 12 hand roasters of excellent design were added and the practice of smelting leady matte in a copper-matting furnace was abandoned. Since the plant passed under the present management the equipment has been increased so that the following is a brief description of the same at this date: Two lead blast furnaces, 48 by 180 in. at tuyéres, 17 ft. 6 in. tuyéres to feed floor; four lead blast furnaces, 40 by 144 in. at tuyéres, 17 ft. 6 in. tuyéree to feed floor; two copper-matting furnaces, not used; blast-furnace flue, 900 ft.; area 245 sq. ft.; blast-furnace stack, 150 ft.; above furnace floor, 190 ft. When smelting a 500-ton charge per day, the gases approximate 63,700 cu. ft. per minute and travel at a speed of 260 ft. per minute. The slag is hauled by a 10-ton electric locomotive; the slag shells and settler refuse are elevated to a bin on the feed floor by an electric hoist. The matte is tapped in 1,600-lb. cakes and loaded into cars

The Similkameen mine is located about 100 miles east of Vancouver, British Columbia, and ten miles west of Princeton, where the mine personnel live. Princeton was the first town in the British Columbia interior, originally the home of Cree and Blackfoot Indians and later settled by men of the Hudson's Bay Company, miners, cattlemen, and others looking for gold. After gold, there were coal mines and then copper mines . The Granby Consolidated Mining Company, Limited, operated the Copper Mountain ore bodies from 1926 to 1930 and from 1937 to 1957, mining 34 million tons of about 170 copper ore, mainly from underground. In 1966, Newmont Mining Corporation acquired the Ingerbelle property on the west side of the Similkameen River. Newmont then purchased the assets of Granby and formed Similkameen Mining Company to develop and operate the Ingerbelle and Copper Mountain ore bodies on both sides of the Similkameen River canyon. The Ingerbelle and Copper Mountain ore bodies lie within rocks composed of andesite tuffs, agglomerates, and argillites. Chalcopyrite mineralization occurs as a dissemination. Original ore reserves were estimated at approximately 75 million tons grading 0.52% copper. Mining is carried out on a three-shift, seven-day-week schedule at a rate of about 60,000 tons of ore and waste per day with four 10 cu yd P & H 1900 shovels which mine and load a fleet of 100-ton Lectra Haul trucks. Among the unique features of the design and construction of the Similkameen project was the construction of 4. 5 miles (7. 24 km) of new Trans-Provincial No. 3 highway by the company to the specifications of the British Columbia Department of Highways. The old highway traversed the Ingerbelle pit area. Along the relocated highway is a 4, 000 ft (1219 m) long berm which conceals the mine pit. This area has been replanted and now looks like the original forest scenery. Another interesting feature is that the tailings from the concentrator flow by gravity over a 1000 ft (34% m) suspension bridge, which crosses the Similkameen River canyon then passes through a tunnel to the dam site, a distance of 59,000 ft (17,980 m) to the cyclone station. When the Copper Mountain ore bodies are mined, the ore will be transported by belt conveyor on a second suspension bridge across the canyon to the Ingerbelle concentrator. A transparent model of a reservoir has been used to study some characteristics of instability in miscible displacement. The linear model dimensions are 1/4 in. x 91/2 in. x 10 ft. The model is packed with spherical glass beads. Thee groups of experiments have been performed. The objectives were to measure, respectively, the rate of growth of the transition zone, flow velocity variations in the transition zone, and the effect of a graded viscosity zone on stability. All experiments were compared, where possible, with theory. The transition zone grew almost linearly with distance traveled, regardless of flow rate, where adverse viscosity ratios were used. At very adverse viscosity ratios and large distances traveled, some reduction below linear growth was noted. This could be attributed to the effects of mixing. General similarity in flow pattern was commonly shown in different tests, although exceptions occurred at the higher viscosity ratios. Injection of tracer spots permitted direct experimental measurement of velocity variations. Statistical methods were used to compare observed velocity variations with recently published theories. Surprisingly good agreement with some theoretical predictions was obtained. In the experiments using an initially graded viscosity zone, macroscopic stability was reached before predicted by theory. Under conditions theoretically considered to be slightly unstable, any fingering tendency was too slight to become observable within a 10-ft long system. The general correlation of all experiments with published theory was good, and suggests that theoretical predictions can be extended to reservoir problems. INTRODUCTION Early laboratory studies of miscible displacement demonstrated the high recovery efficiency possible with this method. Linear laboratory models showed that, under some circumstances, all in-place hydrocarbons could be recovered using as little solvent as 5 per cent of the pore volume. These results led to a series of pilot field projects. Under realistic conditions, however, other laboratory studies showed that a small solvent bank may not recover much more oil than a conventional gas drive. The cause of this lack of efficiency is unstable viscous fingering. The size of the solvent bank required to give optimum recovery is, therefore, a question of great economic significance. The object of the experiments described in this paper was the quantitative measurement of unstable flow parameters, the verification of present theories on the miscible displacement process, and correlation of these theories with ex peri mental observation. Of the theories which have been advanced, those by Dougherty, Koval and Perrine show promise of predicting reservoir performance with reasonable accuracy.l-7 The present experiments were correlated, where possible, with the theories of Koval and Perrine. Dougherty's theory was not used because of the additional computational difficulty it presented and the belief that no further information would result. EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT A transparent reservoir model, consisting of a vertical reinforced plexiglass column, was used for the experiments. The column was packed with glass beads, which served as the porous medium. To induce a known velocity disturbance in the flow, a double cosine wave restriction in the transverse cross-section was placed at the top of the column. To mark the flow field and provide a means of measuring the local fluid velocity, a dye-spot injection system was provided. The column was 10 ft high by 1/2 in. wide by 1/4 in. deep. The cosine restriction was placed 16 in. from the top of the column. The glass beads were smooth and spherical and had a mean diameter of 0.0102 cm. Liquids entered the top of the column through a manifold allowing three points of entry (left, center, and right, or any combination of these). A positive-displacement pump with variable-speed drive was used to control liquid flow rates. The relative interfacial energies of symmetrical tilt boundaries in silver of greater than 99.999 pct purity were measured as a function of orientation difference 0 between 9° and 36° about <001>. The results are in good agreement with the dislocation model of the grain boundary. The energy vs H curve may be represented by the Shockley and Read equation in the form Eoe (0.55—In 8). READ&apos; has indicated that an ideal experimental method of testing the predictions of the dislocation theory of the grain boundary would be to measure the interfacial energies of symmetrical tilt boundaries between face-centered-cubic grains that have a common <001> axis, as a function of orientation difference 0. The misfit H should be defined by a rotation of each grain through an angle of H/2 away from the boundary. Such boundaries might be expected, from geometrical considerations, to be made up of a series of edge dislocations, at least for small values of 0. Energy vs H relationships for tin&apos; and lead:&apos; were previously obtained for an asymmetrical tilt boundary separating two grains in which generally only one grain was rotated about a <001> specimen axis through an angle of H away from the boundary, the other grain remaining fixed. It is possible, however, that the boundary atoms in tin and lead may have attained a symmetrical position, in relation to the orientations of the grains on either side of the boundary, during equilibrium annealing. The two sets of measurements on silicon ferrite&apos; were somewhat better suited for comparison with theory, since the boundaries were symmetrical tilt boundaries in which the axis of relative rotation was <110> in the first series and <l00> in the second; but this alloy has a body-centered-cubic structure. Although the grain boundaries in silver" were symmetrically tilted, the axis of relative rotation was not a simple crystallographic direction, and it varied from boundary to boundary. Although the above measurements were in good agreement with the Shockley and Read equation,"&apos;: it appeared desirable to carry out experiments under the ideal conditions specified by Read.&apos; Consequently, the relative energies of symmetrical tilt boundaries in silver between grains that have a common <001> axis were measured. The technique of equilibrating grain boundaries in oriented tricrystals was used rather than the less satisfactory thermal groove method previously employed for silver bicrystals." Experimental Details and Observations The solidification and seeding techniques, described previouslyh for growing tricrystals of controlled orientations, were used to prepare tricrystal specimens from silver of greater than 99.999 pct purity. The silver was obtained from American Platinum Works, Newark, N. J., in the form of poly crystalline rods 10 cm long and 7 mm in diam. These rods were then cold worked by rolling or drawing them into suitably shaped blanks. Single crystal seeds and tricrystals were grown in a high purity graphite boat by means of a movable furnace with globar heating elements. The graphite boat was enclosed in a Vycor tube, which was first evacuated to about l00/u Hg and then filled with a static argon atmosphere. The maximum temperature outside the Vycor tube was 1250°C. A typical tricrystal specimen of silver is shown in Fig. 1. Grains B and C were grown from seed crystals with a <001> specimen axis or longitudinal direction parallel to the direction of growth and with another <001> direction perpendicular to the surface. Each of the two seed crystals was rotated 18" about the <001> specimen axis but in opposite directions away from the boundary. A symmetrical tilt boundary, therefore, separated grains B and C with an orientation difference 8 of 36" about <001>. Grain A in Fig. 1 was grown from the middle seed with a <110> direction parallel to the specimen axis and with a <001> direction inclined at 45&apos; to the surface of the specimen. THIS paper relates entirely to the casting of brass under fluid pressure in steel dies. Die castings of metals and alloys of low melting point have been available for many years but the development of brass die castings has been relatively recent, occurring within the past five years. The successful development of brass die castings has resulted from the availability of alloy steels that would give satisfactory life as dies and the development of suitable die-casting machines. The melting point of copper is 1084° C. (1983° F.) and of a high brass about 900° C. (1652° F.), as compared to 327.5° C. (621.5° F.) for lead, 419.4° C. (786.7° F.) for zinc and 658.7° C. (1217.7° F.) for aluminum, temperatures that are indicative of the casting temperatures required for the various types of alloys, of which the melting points are somewhat lower than those of the pure metals.
