The proper representation of equilibria involving graphitic carbon in the constitutional diagram of the iron-carbon system is admittedly an unsolved problem, the complete solution of which will probably require the establishment of more experimental evidence than is at this time available. The object of this paper is to present the author's observations on some of the phenomena in question and his interpretation of this and other recorded evidence. The chief of the recently disputed questions upon which the author has experimental evidence concerns the occurrence of graphitization at temperatures below the Al point. In a paper1 presented at the September, 1919, meeting of this Institute, the following is found: "the results given would seem to indicate that the graphite eutectoid lies at a smaller value of carbon content than has been previously supposed. At least this is true unless there is either a marked formation of graphite eutectoid at these rates of cooling, or a decomposition of pearlite into graphite, both rather unlikely suppositions, but not impossible ones." In a discussion of this paper, H. A. Schwartz2 takes the position that the possibility of graphitization occurring below the A1 point is an open question, but that complete graphitization (to less than 0.10 per cent, combined carbon) commonly occurs above this temperature. Another opinion from the malleable castings industry is found in a recent paper3 by Touceda: "Also the carbide of iron can be broken up into its two soft constituents at the temperature referred to. This temperature is called the critical temperature, or critical range, and for air-furnace hard-iron castings it is in the vicinity of 1440" F. It is the

PuRe silver and silver-lead alloys have been studied as to their suitability for bearing~.' In preparing the fused alloyst care was taken to exhaust the toxic fumes caused by the thaillium content. The compositions of the series of fused alloys are listed in Table I. The silver-thallium alloys were melted in clay-graphite crucibles and cast into preheated steel molds of 3/4-in, diameter. In the cast condition, they showed a cored structure, as indicated by the micrographs of Figs. I to 3. The etching reagent used was a mixture of 2 grams K2Cr207, 8 C.C. H2S04, and IOO C.C. H20. The cored structure is unsatisfactory for the type of corrosion resistance required for bearing applications, and homogenizing experiments were carried out at various temperatures, the results of which are shown in Figs. 4 through 8. The alloys with a lower thallium concentration, which were heated for 2 hr. at 525°C show an almost completely homogenized solid solution type of structure. With higher thallium concentration, the homogenizing temperature was dropped to 475OC. to eliminate the formation of a liquid phase. It is evident that heating for 2 hr. at this temperature did not iesiilt iii complete elimination of the cored structure. As would be expected, cold-working of the cast structure is an expedient in establishing equilibrium conditions. The fine homogeneous grain structure shown in Fig. 7 corresponds to the cold-worked area under the Rockwell ball penetration when the hardness was taken before heat-treatment. The general geology and mineralogy of bentonite, including pertinent technological details of clay minerals in the montmorillonite group, are summarized. Worldwide occurrences of bentonite deposits are reviewed, with emphasis on geologic methods and economic principles of evaluation. Active mining districts are described and areas with potential for current and future development are assessed. The production history of bentonite, principal producers, major consumers, and indicated trends are noted; also attention is directed to the hundreds of minor industrial uses of this versatile material, ranging from the manufacture of (A)cid neutralizers to (Z)eolite water softeners. Recent significant results of both basic and applied research are reported, with suggested lines of investigation for current and near-future consideration.

THE Cornucopia gold quartz veins form a parallel vein system traversing metamorphic and granodioritic rocks. Field and petrographic evidence suggests that metasomatism has played an important role both in the emplacement of the granodiorite and in the formation of the veins. Structurally the veins appear to be related to the major tectonic features of the Wallowa Mountains and to be narrow shear zones rather than filled fissures. Petrographic studies indicate a complex history of formation starting from initial alteration along fractures or joints followed by recurrent fracturing and a quartz-forming stage, and closing with continued shearing and microbrecciation, which permitted the upward percolation of the later ore- forming solutions. The precipitation of ore minerals from these solutions formed ore shoots. Postmineral effects include the injection of Tertiary basaltic dikes, a slight amount of cross faulting, and some movement along the planes of the veins as well as oxidation.

When this study was started very little information was available regarding the physical characteristics of West Virginia coals. This was particularly true of friability and of crushing strengths of the coals. Some work had been done on specific gravity studies but the available information applied to only a few coals. In practically all coal-classification systems thus far proposed, the predominating factors of classifications are largely based on the chemical characteristics of the coal. Recently some investigators have pointed out that a classification based on chemical and physical properties of coal might serve to place coals in their proper group better than classification systems based on chemical properties alone. One of the aims of this study was to obtain some data on the physical properties of coal which might help to classify West Virginia coals. The Samples Fig. I shows where the coal samples were obtained and the approximate division line of the high and low-volatile coal fields of the state. The relative geological horizons of the coal beds tested are shown in Fig. 2. In securing samples of coal for friability and specific gravity tests, it was the aim always to obtain a representative sample of lump coal produced at a particular mine. The samples were obtained from the loading boom, the railroad car, or the mine cars. Wherever it was possible to secure samples from a loading boom they were taken from it by taking shovelfuls of coal from the loading boom every minute until about 200 lb. of coal was obtained. If there were no loading booms used at the mines sampled, the coal sample was taken from a loaded railroad car by systematically taking shovelfuls of coal at definite intervals over the whole top of the car until about 200 Ib. of coal was obtained.

In this paper, oxidation potentials measured in the presence of various concentrations of cyanide, ferro-cyanide, and ferricyanide and ethyl xanthate at various values of pH are related to flotation response. Eh-pH diagrams are presented to show that the formation of surface ferric ferrocyanide is probably responsible for depression when cyanide is added. The influence of cyanide on the depression of pyrite with xanthates as collector has been the subject of a number of investigations,'-6 and several theories on the mechanism of depression have evolved from these studies. Wark and Cox7 and Gaudin8 have suggested that the depressing effect is due to a competition of cyanide ion with xanthate ion for the surface. Cook and his colleagues9-11 have explained this phenomenon in terms of competition between hydrocyanic acid and xanthic acid. Sutherland 12 has shown that although both of these theories accurately describe the relation between pH value and cyanide addition at constant collector addition, they fail to describe the relation between pH value and the amount of collector required to cause flotation. Taggart 13 suggested that depression in these systems is due to the formation of a reaction product between ferric ion at the pyrite surface and ferrocyanide ion derived from solution. Majumdar4,6 has attempted to prove this hypothesis by measuring the contact angles of pyrite in the presence of 25 mg per liter ethyl xanthate and different concentrations of potassium ferrocyanide and ferricyanide. In all cases the contact angles were quite high up to pH 10. These results indicate that pyrite should not be depressed by either potassium ferrocyanide or ferricyanide. In view of these facts, Majumdar has assumed that the compound Fe(CN)2 forms at the surface. Gründer and Bornl4 have stated that depression may be due to the formation of the compound K2Fe(II)Fe(CN)6 at the pyrite-solution interface. This compound is thought to be an interaction product between the K2Fe(CN)6-2 ion from solution and the Fe++ ion at the pyrite surface and, accordingly, K4Fe(CN)6 should depress pyrite at least as effectively as KCN. This was proven experimentally, but there was no simple relation between the depression of pyrite and the concentration of either KCN or K4Fe(CN)6 in solution. In view of the many mechanisms that have been proposed for pyrite depression by cyanide, it is apparent that a clear understanding of the phenomena occurring in these systems is lacking. One reason for this may be the fact that the species responsible for pyrite flotation in the presence of xanthate is not the xan-thate ion but rather dixanthogen.15 Since the oxidation of xanthate to dixanthogen is dependent on the oxidation potential of the solution, it would seem that knowledge of these potentials would be a requisite to understanding the pyrite-xanthate-cyanide system. It is the object of this paper to measure both the oxidation potential and pH of the pyrite systems in the presence of various concentrations of cyanide, ferrocyanide, and ferricyanide and xanthate and to relate these values to flotation response. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND 'TECHNIQUES In the experiments discussed here, pure potassium ethyl xanthate was used as collector, and reagent grade potassium cyanide, potassium ferrocyanide, and potassium ferricyanide were used as depressants. Reagent grade HC1 and KOH were added for pH adjustment. Conductivity water, made by passing distilled water through an ion exchange column, was used in all experimental work. Two natural samples of pyrite were used in the investigation. Sample preparation for flotation included dry grinding with a mortar and pestle and sizing the product to 100 x 200 mesh. Prior to flotation, a 0.75-gm sample of pyrite was added to a solution containing a known amount of depressant at the desired pH value, and the system was conditioned for 4 min. Following this, a known amount of collector was added and the system was conditioned for another 4 min. Stockpiles in the minerals industries serve a wide variety of purposes. Usually they are for surge between stages of processing, for a dependable plant feed in anticipation of delays, or to provide for single or double shift mining in conjunction with round-the-clock milling. Often surge piles are necessary to insure a uniform feed to continuous process equipment where the material is received as an intermittent or variable flow. Extensive use is made of stockpiling for the primary purpose of blending. The significant fact about all stockpiling of bulk materials is that storing and reclaiming are two separate and distinct operations and they may present widely different problems in the selection of methods and tools.

Nitrogen was introduced into pure niobium (colutn-bium) and dilute Nb- Zr alloy wires by equilibration with pure nitrogen gas at high temperatures. Room-temperature hardness was correlated with the alloy composition, heat treatment, and microstructure. Hardness was found to be most sensitive to the amount of nitrogen in solution; however, a significant hardening up to 500 Dph look place upon aging of quenched alloys. A coarse dispersion of nitride did not significantly increase the hardness of the material though the nitride was found to have a hardness of 1400 Khn. BY now the marked effect of nitrogen on the properties of bcc refractorv metals is we ll-documented. There are few studies, however, in which the state of the solute has been carefully controlled. Indeed, the composition-temperature-pressure relationships in nitrogen-refractory metal systems have been determined precisely for only niobium and tantalum.'-4 Most investigations on niobium have dealt with alloys High-nitrogen alloys cleaved on (100) planes and had negligible ductility. Precipitation was found to occur in either a discontinuous or a continuous fashion, depending on the composition and cooling rates. Upon cooling, the precipitation first proceeded discontinu-ously by the nucleation of nilride needles at subbound-aries and subsequent growth of a two-phase microcon-stituent. At lower temperatures continuous precipitation occurred in the subgrain interior ahead of the discontinuous precipitation interface. containing nitrogen, carbon, and oxygen in significant but uncontrolled and, in several instances, undetermined amounts. Thus, there has been some uncertainty regarding the presence and the distribution of precipitates. H OWEVER extensively water-lines may be laid in the mine for fire fighting purposes, there are still, usually, points being worked temporarily, development, stoping or other work of a temporary or incidental nature where it is considered that the expense of laying fire-lines is not warranted. While the laying of water-lines in some sections of the mine may not be warranted, in most metal mines it is necessary to lay an air-line to all working places. In the mine of the United Verde Extension Mining Co., at Jerome, Ariz., advantage has been taken of this fact by providing a means of by-passing the water at the end of the water-line into the air-line in case an emergency arises. By this means the 2-in. air-line can be quickly converted into a water-line for fighting fire which might otherwise be beyond the reach of the water-lines.

A comprehensive solution is offered to the problem of dust emissions at belt conveyor transfer points. Details of enclosure design are discussed and a straightforward procedure for calculating required dust control exhaust volume is presented. Many design variables are taken into account which heretofore have been commonly ignored or inadequately considered. These include belt widths, belt speeds. enclosure openings, material flow rate, material bulk densities, material lump sizes, height of material fall, material temperature, and ambient air temperature. All of these questions are handled by means of a "fill-in-the-blanks" type of calculation form, permitting quick, reliable solutions by relative "non-experts."

THIS paper gives a preliminary summary of results of tests on the resistance to fatigue under reversed stresses of steel subjected to cold-working and of tests to determine the effect of rest on the endurance of steel under reversed stresses. The tests of cold-worked steel were undertaken as part of an investigation by the National Research Council Committee on Fatigue Phenomena of Metals and were made by Mr. Moore; the tests to determine the effect of rest are part of an investigation now being made by Mr. Putnam. Both series of tests were made in the Materials Testing Laboratory of the University of Illinois. The preliminary results of these tests are reported now because it is believed that test data on fatigue strength should be available at the earliest possible moment; however, it should be clearly kept in mind that this paper gives preliminary results and is intended to encourage discussion rather than to give final conclusions. Before giving the data of the tests, the writers will explain the term "fatigue strength" as used in this paper and will discuss briefly the method used in interpreting the test data of repeated-stress tests. " The term fatigue strength, as applied to a material, may be defined as that maximum fiber stress that will cause fracture of the material after the repetition of any given number of cycles of stress, each cycle involving the variation of stress from a minimum to the above maximum. The fatigue strength, then, varies with the number, of repetitions occurr,ing in the lifetime of a structural or machine member and with the range of stress for each cycle of stress. The fatigue strength will be lower for a member in which the stress is completely reversed than for one in which the stress varies from zero to a maximum. In interpreting test data from fatigue tests under reversed stress, the stresses and corresponding numbers of repetitions required for failure are plotted on logarithmic cross-section paper. In connection with law suits between mining companies at Bingham, Utah, a few years ago, the writer made petrographic studies of more than 1400 rock and mineral samples in thin sections, and also careful studies of their field relations. In petrographic studies, even when an area is studied intensively, attention is commonly centered very largely on the unusual features of special interest, so that the relative abundance of rock types (or minerals or textures) can only be determined by a study of map areas outlined largely by field methods, and cannot be based directly on microscopic work. It is very uncommon, and usually impossible, to take samples at regular short intervals along and across formations. It is precisely because such methods were used at Ringham that the work presents a rare opportunity for determining, on a microscopic basis, the relative abundance of rock types and the continuity of gradations between rock types. At the same time, a study was made of the alteration of sediments under the influence of igneous intrusions, with results that are believed to be of interest and importance. • Sandstone-limestone Gradation The sedimentary rocks of the Bingham district are chiefly sandstones, with some beds of limestone, all now lying with their strike nearly east and their dip nearly north at an angle of about 30°, near the surface. The limestone beds are remarkably irregular in thickness in some places, but usually change very slowly in composition along the strike. However, the most interesting results are obtained from a study of a section across the beds at right angles to the strike. In some places, such sections show the usual alternation of pure sandstone with nearly pure limestone, in the simple manner assumed in most geological discussions.

THE interpretation of notched-bar impact results has been a matter of controversy since the introduction of more or less standard tests by Fremont,1 Charpy2 and others at the turn of the century. Many investigators3-l1 have contributed to the understanding of the significance of such tests. Several symposiums12,13 have been held with the express purpose of discussing the significance and interpretation of the impact tests. It is not the purpose of this paper to review all these contributions to the development of the knowledge on this subject, but rather to present an interpretation of notched-bar impact tests that appears to be in agreement with the available published data. Fundamentally, the interpretation discussed in this DaDer of the brittle failure of some steels in notched-bar impact test is similar to the qualitative analysis presented by Ludwik3 in the 1920's. Essentially, Ludwik stated that the function of the notch was to increase the tensile stress necessary for yielding, and that brittle failure occurred when the stress necessary for yielding exceeded the normal stress required for fracture (with no plastic de- formation). Ludwik, however, had no means of measuring this normal stress necessary for failure of a plastically* undeformed metal, therefore he could not extend his interpretation beyond the qualitative stage. Kuntze14 and recently MC- Adam15 attempted to determine the effect of deformation on the stress necessary for fracture by testing, in tension, specimens notched to various depths and angles. Because of the uncertainties in Kuntze's (and RlcAdam's) analysis of the stresses (which have been pointed out by SachsI6) and the inherent nonuniformity in the stress distribution in notched bars, the results of such investigations are difficult to interpret. A more direct method of measuring the effect of deformation on the fracture stress was suggested in previous papers17-l8 and has been utilized in the present investigation. The present paper concerns itself primarily with the behavior of notched impact specimens. The effects of strain rate, temperature, and stress distribution, which are discussed with reference to the impact specimen, apply just as well to the behavior of metal at the bases of notches in any engineering structure. All that is necessary is to determine the stress distribution in the structure at the base of the notches.
