ALTHOUGH the application of light metals in war materiel increased during the year, based on the number of uses, the trend in aluminum and magnesium production in 1944 was characterized by a sharp decline in the production of both metals accompanied by a further accumulation of large Government reserve stocks. Several primary reduction plants were curtailed to prevent building excessive inventories. By the end of the year, however, a lively revival of war production took place when resistance stiffened on the western front in Europe. Production of primary aluminum ingot was reduced from over 90,000 tons per month at the start of the year to 45.000 tons per month by the end of the year.

MINE VENTILATION is an important factor in mine maintenance as well as having direct bearing on labor efficiency. Effective ventilation systems are costly, especially those for the deeper mines, but with intelligent direction the worth of a system is usually greater than its cost. In most mines using mechanical ventilation, and practically all deep mines, it has been found beneficial to equipment, timber, and the ground, to run the fan or fans continuously even though production has been curtailed or entirely suspended. Therefore, economies in ventilation may be overlooked when general cost reductions are necessary. The operating costs of a well-designed ventilation system should be capable of reduction during periods of curtailed or suspended operations. A mine that is ventilated by splits, or that can be sectionized, can reduce its fan-power costs considerably, and provisional divisions can sometimes be made in other mines, in which the air is ordinarily coursed through all the workings, without harmful effects.

Much attention and publicity has been given, during recent years, to grinding, classification, flotation, and thickening. The various technical papers, and symposiums held to discuss these important phases of milling, have contributed to a better under- standing of the fundamental principles and operating variables involved. Another important part of milling- to the flotation operator-is a treatment step to which frequently too little attention is given-" conditioning," or the treatment the ground mineral pulp receives before it enters the flotation machines. Conditioning" is a hackneyed and frequently misused term, commonly employed to describe the pretreatment of surfaces of minerals in ore pulps or mill pr6ducts prior to froth flotation. In general, such pretreatment is for the purpose of changing the flotation characteristics of these mineral surfaces to enable them to respond in some desired predetermined manner when subjected to flotation. Taggartl states that the function of conditioning is "either to insure selective collector coating of one mineral species while another species is not; or to take such steps as will compensate for departure there from."

Wet and dry specimens of three rocks of approximately granitic composition were deformed at different experimental conditions. These experiments were carried out in order to study the extent to which water, either added or released from mineral reactions, may affect the mechanical properties and the microstructure of these rocks. The experiments were conducted in a Griggs&apos; hot creep apparatus at temperatures and pressures up to 900ºC and 1000 MPa respectively; and most of them were performed in the constant strain rate mode [(1.10-6 < t < 1 • 10-4 s-1 )]. All three rocks were low porosity rocks, and the wet specimens never contained more than 0.9 wt % of added water. The experimental results are, however, quite unequivocal: They show that wet rocks are weaker than dry ones. A significant difference is even found for rocks tested in uniaxial compression at room temperature. A few experiments carried out on specimens obtained from larger prestressed rock cores indicated that the central parts of these cores were more likely to contain more microcracks than the ends. Optical microscope examinations revealed that extensive microcracking takes place even at the highest temperatures, where other mechanisms such as slip and dislocation creep also become important. Very little partial melting could be observed except for the specimens deformed at 900ºC.

The solubility of nitrogen in liquid binary and ternary Fe-Ni-Co alloys has been measured by the Sieverts&apos; method between 1550°and 1700°C. Solubility data and standard free energzes and enthalpies of solution for nitrogen in the alloys are presented. Interaction parameters are discussed and presented for binary and ternary alloys. MOST of the studies of nitrogen solubility in liquid metals have been directed toward the dilute alloys of iron. Several of these investigations have included measurements of the nitrogen solubility in Fe-Ni al10s&apos;- and in Fe-Co alloys.435 There has been some work, however, that has extended across the e-i-" and F-CO" binaries. This investigation was undertaken to determine the nitrogen solubility in both binary and ternary alloys of the Fe-Ni-Co system. It was also hoped that the differences between earlier studies might be resolved. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD This investigation was made using a Sieverts&apos; apparatus described previously." The nickel (99.85 pct) and cobalt (99.9 pct) were obtained from Sherritt-Gordon Mines, Ltd., and the iron (99.95 pct) was Fer-rovac-E obtained from Crucible Steel Co. Recrystal-lized alumina crucibles were used throughout the entire investigation with no evidence of crucible-melt reaction. Melt temperatures were measured with an optical pyrometer and the temperature scale calibrated against the melting points of the three pure metals. The emissivity of the melt was assumed to be a linear function of composition for all alloys, as has been shown for Fe-Ni alloys.lZ The emissivity of the pure metals at 1600°C were taken as 0.43 for iron, 0.44 for cobalt, and 0.45 for nickel. Using these emissivities, the trans mis sivity of the system was found to be 0.51 i 0.01. The Sieverts&apos; method was used for this study and followed the procedures outlined previously.l&apos; The individual metals were weighed to give about 100 g of alloy. The alloys were melted in the crucible under a partial pressure of argon. The system was evacuated, and the "hot volume" was measured with argon. To avoid the errors caused by vaporization, the melt was held under vacuum only long enough to ensure that all of the gas in the system had been removed. The influence of any small amount of vaporization on the "hot volume" was shown to be negligible by measuring the "hot volume" after a run. This measurement agreed with that made at the start of the run within the implicit error, 0.2 cc, caused by the limitations in accurately reading the buret. The solubility-pressure relationship was measured in the pure metals and in several alloy compositions throughout the ternary system. These measurements were made by admitting measured amounts of nitrogen to the system, and then determining the equilibrium nitrogen pressure above the melt. This method has the distinct advantage of higher accuracy, particularly at lower pressures, than measurements made by withdrawing gas from the system to reduce the pressure after determining the solubility at 1 atm nitrogen pressure. This latter method has a practical lower limit of about 0.4 atm where an increased error is encountered because the buret must be emptied to permit further measurements at lower pressures. By determining the relation between apparent solubility and pressure, it was possible to make a good estimate of the initial nitrogen content of the metal from the intercept of the solubility curve extrapolated to zero pressure.11 DISCUSSION The solubility data corrected to 1 atm nitrogen pressure are summarized in Table I. The reported solubility has been corrected for the initial nitrogen content of the alloys. The initial nitrogen contents fell between 0.0002 and 0.0010 wt pct, and were lower in the iron and nickel than in the cobalt. Sieverts&apos; law was obeyed in all alloys at pressures up to 1 atm. Examples of this behavior are shown in Fig. 1. The reaction for solution of nitrogen is Taking the standard state as 1 wt pct N in the alloy and the reference state as nitrogen at infinite dilution in the alloy, and noting the adherence to Sieverts&apos; law, K becomes the solubility of nitrogen in the alloy at 1 atm pressure. Thus the solubility data of Table I were used directly to calculate the standard free energy for the solution reaction. These results are also presented in Table I. The enthalpy of solution is also summarized in Table I as calculated from a form of the van&apos;t Hoff relation: Iron-Nickel System. The data for the solubility of nitrogen in liquid Fe-Ni binary alloys is presented in Fig. 2 along the with data of aito, Schenck et al.,&apos; and Humbert and 1liott.l&apos; The data for studies of nitrogen solubility in Fe-Ni alloys containing less than 20 pc t i&apos;- are not presented in Fig. 2, although they are in good agreement with the present work. Ecstall Mining Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Texas Gulf Sulphur Company, is the owner and operator of the Kidd Creek Mine including the concentrator complex located near Timmins, Ontario. Canada, approximately 450 miles north of Toronto. The mine, concentrator and Timmins form a triangular arrangement with a 17-mile rail link connecting the mine and concentrator and both of these facilities 18 and 14 miles respectively by road from Timmins. A core drilling program in the spring of 1964 established the presence of a large massive sulphide orebody which was to become the Kidd Creek Mine. Texas Gulf Sulphur had been conducting an intensive search for base metal in various parts of Northern Ontario and Quebec since 1957. Of several thousand anomalies detected in airborne electromagnetic surveys, several hundred warranted ground inspection, but only one of more than sixty drilled became a commercial orebody, the Kidd Creek Mine. The geophysical exploration work has been well covered in a paper written and presented by Van Donohoo, presently a Vice-President of T.G.S., at the American Mining Congress in San Francisco in October 1969. GEOLOGY The orebody lies within a series of overturned rhyolitic flows and pyroelastics with a major peridotite intrusive to the east. The hangingwall and footwall are composed chiefly of intermediate volcanics, andesite and dacite. The southern end of the orebody appears to terminate abruptly against greywacke while the north end is bifurcated and the structure obscured.

E. met at the roof garden dining room of the Tulsa Club on Monday evening, May 13, most of the members present came prepared with a credulity-stretching yarn of some sort or other, gathered from actual experience. Perhaps it was not realized at the time that such anecdotes would eventually burst into print, but while the excellent dinner was appeasing the inner man the word was passed around that informality and spontaneity of expression would characterize the meeting, with the result that the shackles of convention were eventually cast aside and the meeting waxed better and better until the hour grew ,late, and the chairman, L. G. E. Bignell, originator of the idea, brought to a close what was agreed to be a profitable and entertaining evening. The ball was started rolling by Paul Ruedemann of the program committee, who offered the following:

Boron has been used to produce nonaging low-carbon sheet steel. Retention of the necessary minimum amount of about 0.006 pet partially killed the steel. Amounts exceeding about 0.012 pet increased the degree of deoxidotion, piping tendencies, and possibility of hot tearing in primary rolling. Semikilled practice resulted in good ingot yields and satisfactory surface quality. Aluminum added with the boron provided a protective de-oxidizer. Good drawobility was indicated by performances of the steel in a limited number of deep-drawing trials. Some problems with hot-tearing and boron-analysis procedures were overcome. Metal lographically, the boron semikilled steels revealed some structures not usually found in plain low-carbon steels. IN 1943 Low and Gensamer1 reported that strain aging, which hardens and embrittles ordinary low-carbon rimmed steel, was due to nitrogen and carbon, and that oxygen played a relatively unimportant role. Since then, many investigators have substantiated their findings and indicated that nitrogen is particularly potent. Commercially, today&apos;s most widely produced non-aging sheet steels for deep drawing are either aluminum killed or vanadium rimmed types. The difference in deoxidation practice, alone, is evidence that oxygen is apparently not an important consideration in control of strain aging. The fact that nitrogen is important is apparent in the consideration that has been given, knowingly or unknowingly, to the amount combined with aluminum and vanadium. Patents were granted to Hayes and Griffis2 for the processing of aluminum-killed steel, and to Epstein" for the manufacture of vanadium rimmed material. Certain prescribed steps in producing these steels can be correlated with the formation of the respective nitrides within certain temperature ranges below the usual hot-finishing temperatures. The potential nonaging properties of either type can be reduced or suppressed by cooling too rapidly to permit the aluminum or vanadium to combine with nitrogen. Subsequent suberitical annealing of the cold-rolled strip, however, normally forms the nitrides and produces the resistance to strain aging. Titanium-killed nonaging steel, described by Comstock,1 forms a nitride in the molten state and is essentially nonaging throughout its processing. Zirconium-killed steel, which was investigated briefly by the author,* appeared to have similar nitride- forming characteristics. It is known" that chromium can produce nonaging rimmed steel, but relatively little is known of the potentialities of some of the other nitride-forming elements such as boron, silicon, columbium, and cerium. In attempting to develop a new nonaging cold-rolled sheet steel with good drawability, the following factors were considered pertinent. Such a steel would necessarily have a low carbon content and therefore have a relatively high degree of oxidation when made in a basic open-hearth furnace. If the denitriding element were also a deoxidizer, a part of the addition would be lost as oxide. The degree of deoxidation would determine whether the steel is rimmed, semikilled or killed, and also could be expected to have an important bearing on ingot yields and ultimate surface quality. Assuming that the pattern for the production of cold-rolled sheets would not be changed to any great extent, the nitride must form in the molten steel, in hot rolling, in subsequent cooling, or in annealing. The nitride, once formed, should resist dissociation and be stable in the final product. Usually an excess of the nitride-forming element is required to combine with sufficient nitrogen. If the element used is a strong ferrite strengthener, a small excess may markedly decrease drawability. With aluminum and vanadium, about 0.03 to 0.05 pct in the steel is preferred. Epstein has said" that about 0.30 pct chromium is required. Titanium nonaging steels are hard unless a sufficient amount (about 0.30 pct) is added also to combine with the carbon. The cost of the necessary amounts of these latter two elements discourages commercial acceptance. Silicon was considered as a possible nitride former, but since amounts up to 0.10 pct in rimmed and semikilled steels do not induce marked resistance to strain aging, larger amounts are apparently required, which would tend to harden and strengthen the ferrite. Of the other elements mentioned, all but boron are expensive heavy-metal elements. Stoichi-ometrically, almost an equal weight of boron would be required to combine with the nitrogen—-ordinarily about 0.003 to 0.006 pct in scrap-practice open-hearth steels. Boron is a slightly stronger deoxidizer than carbon but is less powerful than zirconium, aluminum, or titanium. Thus a rimmed-steel practice might be possible. There is much in the technical literature concerning the hardenability effects of minute amounts of boron in killed steels but very little about its behavior in low-carbon material—particularly as a ferrite strengthener. The available data indicated a need for better information concerning the effects of boron in low-carbon strip steels. Experimental Work Development of a Boron-Treated Nonaging Strip Steel—Initial attempts to produce a boron-rimmed strip steel employed 3-ton basic open-hearth heats which could be teemed into molds large enough to sustain a normal rimming action. Boron as ferro-boron was added to the ladle in small amounts because of the reported hot-short character of aluminum-killed heat-treating grades containing more than about 0.005 pct boron. USE of gold leaf goes back to biblical and even to prehistoric times. Both gold and silver, as well as other metals, were employed in illustrating or illuminating manuscripts. The medieval monks also used bronze powders. Metals were subdivided as finely as possible by mechanical methods, or by granulation and then were pounded into finely divided flakes. Substances such as honey have also been employed, since early times to keep the flakes of metal apart during grinding. Stearic acid is a more modern agent used in flaking aluminum and other metals. Finely divided "blue powder" is a by-product in retorting zinc ores, and contains from 78 to 90 per cent of zinc metal. This has been used as a precipitant for precious metals in the cyanide process and for chemical reduction processes. The making of zinc dust by atomizing is a step well known in electrolytic zinc plants. The Thermit process of Goldschmidt also requires the use of finely divided aluminum.

Curlisle: We&apos;re sitting in Don McLaughlin&apos;s office overlooking Sun Francisco Bay, and he&apos;s going to be good enough to talk about early days in California, maybe about his college years in Berkeley, maybe about his first jobs in mining. Now, Don, would you be good enough to start it off by saying something about George Hearst. I know he died before you were born, but you know a lot about the family, and you no doubt know a lot about him. Certainly, nobody in those days matched his record in getting hold of good mines. McLaughlin: George Hearst died, actually, in the very year that I was born, but as I more or less grew up in the home of Mrs. Phoebe Hearst, who was his widow, I heard a great deal about the mines and the people that made the great fortune she inherited and used so wisely. But I don&apos;t think I really had an appreciation of George Hearst until 1 became active in the mining world and realized how many major mines he had picked in the early days and how much he had to do with their development into successful properties. He started in the California gold fields, but it was on the Comstock that he made his first big stake out of his substantial share in the Ophir mine. I believe at that time he was on his own. Then, later, he became associated with Ben Ali Haggin and Lloyd Tevis in San Francisco, and scoured the West for them. They made a little money in Eureka, Nevada, and other places, but the first important property that he obtained for them was the famous Ontario Mine in Park City, which became one of the great silver lead producers of the Continent. Then later he acquired the Homestake.

THE {120}(001) texture has been reported in near 50 pct Ni-Fe alloys <0.004 in. thick1,2 and in copper 0.014 in. thick.3 This texture is one of two types of secondary recrystallization textures observed to replace a cube texture matrix and is desirable in Fe-Ni alloys because of its unique magnetic characteristics.1,2 However, the conditions for and mechanism of the {120}(001) formation are not well understood.3 During an investigation of the influence of alloying elements on the magnetic characteristics of 49 pct Ni-Fe alloys with a sheet thickness of 0.014 in., we have observed the growth of {120}(001) secondaries when strong deoxidizers such as aluminum and calcium were present. It is believed that this observation in unique and provides additional insight with regard to the mechanism for {120}(001) texture formation. Three alloys were prepared with electrolytic iron and nickel and contained a nominal 49 wt pct Ni. Alloy A was a straight binary Fe-Ni alloy, whereas intentional additions of 0.013 wt pct Ca to alloy B and of 0.59 wt pct A1 to alloy C were made. Ingots were forged at 1100 C, hot-rolled to 0.150 in. gage, pickled, and cold-rolled to 0.014 in. Standard U-shaped magnetic test specimens were punched, deburred, sprayed with MgO, and annealed in ~50°C dew point hydrogen. Textures were identified with the aid of etch pits, the

I. INTRODUCTION. THE general drift of the discussion as to the relative merits of pressure- and exhaust-fans has resulted, if we may judge from the prevailing practice, largely in favor of the latter. The subject has been hitherto treated, however, with special reference to highly gaseous mines, the effect of the form of ventilation upon dust-explosions having been too little considered. Even in mines containing practically no gas, dust-explosions may occur; and if, as I believe, pressure-fans are to be preferred for their effect upon dust, it may be worth while to reopen the debate, and to challenge the advisability of exhaust-ventilation under certain conditions. There are several forms of colliery-ventilation, which may be described as follows: Plain or simple pressure-ventilation, in which the fan acts as a pressure-fan, and the movement of coal is unobstructed at the surface by doors or equivalent devices in drifts or shafts, the traveling and haulage thus being in the return-current. Plain exhaust-ventilation, in which the fan acts as an exhaust-fan, the movement of coal being likewise unobstructed at the surface, and the traveling and haulage being in the intake. Obstructed pressure-ventilation, in which the movement of coal is obstructed at the surface, in order that the traveling and haulage may be in the intake. Obstructed exhaust-ventilation, in which the movement of coal is obstructed at the surface, in order that the traveling and haulage may be in the return. The apparent advantages in running a fan "pressure" during working-hours, and " exhaust" between shifts, seem to justify the recognition of this combination as a standard form of ven-

Changes in length of copper foils of varying thickness and grain size were measured under such conditions of low stress and high temperature that it is believed that creep was predominately the result of interboundary diffusion of the type recently discussed by Conyers Herring. The surface tension of copper was calculated and results confirmed previous work within the limits of experimental error. Under the assumption of viscous flow, viscosities were calculated as a function of temperature and grain size. Predictions of the Nabarro Herring theory of surface grain boundary flow were borne out fully and the Herring theory of diffusional viscosity is strongly supported. ONLY a relatively few techniques for obtaining the surface tension of solids are presently available. Of these, the simplest and most straight forward is the direct measurement of surface tension by the application of a balancing counterforce. Thin wires or foils are lightly loaded and strain rates (either positive due to the downward force of the applied load or negative if the contracting tendency of surface tension is sufficiently greater than the applied stress) are observed. By plotting strain rates against stress, the load which exactly balances the upward pull is found and a simple calculation yields a value for the surface tension. The technique is of comparative antiquity, and solid surface tension values were reported by Chapman and Porter,&apos; Schottky; and Berggren" in the early part of the century. Later, the filament technique became fairly well established as a method for determining the surface tension of viscous liquids, and Tammann and coworkers,&apos;. " Sawai and co-worker and Mackh howed good agreement between the values of surface tension for glasses and tars obtained by the filament technique and by more conventional methods. With the increased confidence in the technique gained in these experiments, the method was applied to solid metals and the first reliable values of surface tension of solid metals were reported by Sawai and coworkers10&apos; " and by Tammann and Boehme." More recently, Udin and coworkersu-&apos;" have reported the results of experiments with gold, silver, and copper wires. Similar experiments with gold wires were carried out by Alexander, Dawson, and Kling.&apos;" The excellent review articles of Fisher and Dunn" and of Udinl@ should be referred to for detailed criticism of the foregoing work and for discussion of underlying theory. In all the foregoing calculations, it is assumed implicitly that the material contracts or extends uni- formly along the length of the specimen and also that it flows in a viscous fashion, i.e., that strain rates are proportional to stress. For an amorphous material, such as glass, tar, or pitch, the assumptions are quite valid and good agreement is obtained with values of surface tension measured by other techniques. The values reported for metals, however, are occasionally regarded with misgiving, since it can be argued that, because of their crystalline nature, true solids can not deform in a viscous fashion. If this is true, then the results reported for solid metals over a long period of years are of only doubtful value. Thus it is clearly necessary that a mechanism be established that would explain both the viscous flow and the uniform deformation that has been assumed. Such a mechanism has been proposed by Herring."&apos; Briefly, he suggests that, under the conditions of the experiment, deformation takes place by means of a flow of vacancies between grain boundaries and surfaces. This is a direct but independent extension of the theory proposed by Nabarro" in an attempt to explain the microcreep observed by Chalmer~.In a condensed form the Herring viscosity equation is TRL there 7 is the viscosity, T the absolute temperature, R and L grain dimensions, and D the self-diffusion coefficient. In its complete form, all constants are calculable and it includes such factors as grain shape, specimen shape, and degree of grain boundary flow. When applied to existing data, good agreement was obtained between predicted and observed flow rates. The theory received provisional confirmation from the work of Buttner, Funk, and Udin" who observed viscosities in 5 mil Au wire much higher than those in the 1 mil wire used by Alexander, Dawson, and Kling.&apos;" More significant were the completely negligible strain rates found by Greenough" in silver single crystals. Opposed to these observations were those of Udin, Shaler, and Wulff&apos;" who found indications of viscosity decreasing as grain size increased. Thus, complete confirmation of the theory was lacking in that the data to which it could be applied contained only a limited number of grain sizes. Hence, it was proposed that a series of experiments be carried out with thin foils of varying grain size up to and including single crystals, where, according to the Herring theory, deformation would occur only at almost infinitely slow rates.

BAUXITE is produced in Arkansas from two mining districts in the central portion of the State. These are (1) the Fourche Mountain district, immediately south and southeast of Little Rock in Pulaski County, and (2) the Bauxite (town) district, about five miles east of Becton in the eastern part of Saline County. These two mining districts are about twelve miles apart, separated by territory which, so far, has produced a negligible amount of commercial ore. Mining was by open-pit methods exclusively until 1924, when underground methods came into use. From 1924 to 1930 about 40 per cent of all of the ore produced in Arkansas was mined by underground methods, mainly by retreating caving.

PRESENT flotation processes depend almost entirely on the buoyant properties of air bubbles to effect separations of mineral and gangue, but there is no convenient method for measuring aeration in flotation cells. Consequently the relation between aeration and cell performance has not been definitely established. In connection with a comparative study of kerosene and froth flotation processes, a modification of the displacement method&apos; was developed in which air escaping from the cell surface is measured with a wet-test meter. The arrangement shown in Fig. 1 is satisfactory for use with a number of cells and is not critical, except that care must be taken to use connections and tubing large enough to avoid excessive back pressures. Attempts to use smaller tubing resulted in back pressures that caused displacement of the liquid level in the receiver, so that some air was lost around the sides, an occurrence readily visible when measurements were taken with only water passing through the cell. With the arrangement shown, the manometer indicated an average reading of about 1/2-in. water pressure. No loss of air was evident. Fig. 2 presents typical data for a standard Denver sub-A 24x24-in. unit cell operated at impeller speeds from 0 to 710 rpm. Each plotted point represents the average for five readings distributed over the entire cell surface. Readings were taken with only water passing through the cell. Results of this type have been used in a study of the influence of operating variables on cell performance and in detecting inherent differences in the operating characteristics of cells of various kinds. Although the information presented in Fig. 2 resulted only with water passing through the cell, the apparatus is suitable for use during flotation of coal when various reagents are present. Possible modi- fications that might prove convenient under special circumstances include varying the size and shape of the receiver and substituting a calibrated, inverted, water-filled carboy or other gas-measuring device for the wet-test meter. If such modifications result in excessive back pressures, some form of draft should be applied at the discharge end of the measuring system.
