The absence of paraffin and other oil hydrocarbons in the soil although they are concentrated in extensive deposits in some localities, the common distribution of plant remains through many formations that are not productive for oil, and many other factors, seem to indicate the existence of an intermediate organic compound between the complex plant compounds and the petroleum hydrocarbons; and much evidence points to the humus acids or associated organic compounds, which are probably collected by surface waters and concentrated in certain areas by means of precipitation by electrolytes, which would be contained in sea water or possibly in various inland seas or lakes. Present-day Evidence There are many present-day evidences of the association of petroleum with humus acids. Binney, in 1912, made observations without explanations on the peat mosses of Down Holland, England, where he found petroleum being formed by decomposition in the presence of an infiltration of sea water. Haseman and others have noted the association of asphalt and hydrocarbons with the swampy, boggy areas, particularly adjacent to the sea. Many of the rivers carry much humus acid in solution, and some tropical rivers carry in the aggregate millions of tons of humus each year. The amount of humus is a variable factor, depending on climatic conditions, and on the salts and alkalies present in the water, also on the density and temperature.

Many recent contributions in the field of theoretical metallography have been concerned with crystallographic definitions or descriptions of various phenomena. The lattice orientation of the crystal being studied must be known before such definitions can be made. Practically all the metallic crystals used do not have crystal faces—other than the unknown "plane of polish"; hence resort must be had to other means of determining orientations. Some use has been made of etch-figures, slip bands, optical properties, etc., for this purpose; but for accurate results, and because of the fewer restrictions to their use, the various X-ray methods have been the most satisfactory.' The methods that have been used may be divided into two general classes: (1) oscillation methods, and (2) transmission Laue methods.² The disadvantages of these methods are numerous, chief among them being the time required to determine a complete orientation. No method proposed so far is wholly satisfactory for determining the orientation of a small macrograin within a polycrystalline aggregate.

The use of blower fans and tubina- for auxiliary face ventilation is a somewhat controversial subject. Most authorities agree upon the advantages of this system over the maintenance of line brattice for dead-end ventilation. They also recognize the system's disadvantages. However, there is considerable disagreement as to the proper relation of the advantages to the disadvantages. It is the purpose of this report to present the opinions of four authorities of diversified occupation and permit the reader to form his own opinions on the subject. ORsErvers Carel Robinson is a mining engineer consultant of wide repute, who has a background of operating experience. Thomas G. Fear is a mine operator whose present position is that of chief engineer for the Hanna Coal Co. at St. Clairsville, Ohio. E. H. Denny is chief of the Coal Mine Inspection Division of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and is a very able engineer whose past experience well qualifies him to appraise this problem. Cloyd M. Smith, editor of the periodical Mechanization, is a ventilation consultant. For a number of years he was a member of the Mining Department of the University of Illinois and has studied mine ventilation for many years. It is Mr. Robinson,s opinion that closely spaced breakthroughs, although conducive to low gas accumulation past the last open crosscut during the driving of entries, are difficult to maintain and are constant Sources of fugitive air. During the heat-treatment of silver specimens for tensile tests it was observed that the bars blistered and became brittle when heated in a hydrogen atmosphere. To check this unexpected result, a wide variety of commercial silvers were heated in hydrogen at 850°C. Only a few of the materials developed blisters, the most severe of which is the tube pictured in Fig. I. The microstructure of a cross section of the tube is shown in Fig. 2. The embrit-tlernent is extremely severe at the edge; the blisters result from the severe deformation of the surface material by large under- lying gas pockets. The effects resulting from hydrogen embrittlement of silver have been observed by numerous investigators over a long time l,2,3 although it was only recently that a clear explanation was offered.4 However, the damage resulting from hydrogen embrittlement has not been generally recognized; and it is of advantage to know more about this phe- 1 References are at the end of the paper.

Computer pit design techniques generally make use of models in which the deposit is represented by a regular array of data. Using a regular system, the number of data points required to represent the air, waste and mineralization in a large deposit become excessive. The number of blocks used to describe the deposit is dependent upon the block size. The quality of the pit wall slope design also is dependent upon the block size used and the method of defining the slope. The error associated with reserve calculations becomes greater with increasing block size. A deposit model consisting of variable sized air and mineralized blocks has been developed at the University of British Columbia and improved upon at Climax for pit design work. The method permits put- ting the entire model in core for rapid data processing. This permits the use of a versatile cone generation technique which allows close adherence to variable slope constraints in all directions. The conical shape is approximated by rectangles on each level which equal the area of the ideal conical intersection. The shape of the intersection may vary from approximately circular to elipsoidal. The approximate cone shape is controlled by the slope constraints applicable at the point of intersection on the bench. The overall modeling technique greatly assists the pit design engineer in developing a high quality pit design.

The old adage, " Necessity is the mother of invention," is fully borne out in the case of the device described in this paper. About four years ago the firm of the writer received instructions from Sir John Hawkshaw, C. E., and I. Wolf Barry, Esq., C. E., to construct and erect three large Guibal fans for ventilating a portion of the Metropolitan and District Underground Railway, of London. On account of the cost of coal and the very limited space for boilers, it was arranged that the fans should be driven by gas-engines. Those who have had experience with Guibal fans will be aware that as each blade or vane passes the lower edge of the shutter a pulsatory action takes place. When the fans above mentioned were set to work, the pulsation or vibration of the immense volumes of air discharged was so great that it caused a corresponding vibration of the window-sashes, doors, etc., of the surrounding buildings; and this was so unpleasant that the shopkeepers and others near obtained an injunction against the railroad company, compelling it to stop one of the fans. The work was by this time out of our hands, and we only casually heard what had taken place, learning also that, in addition to this injunction, another was threatened in the case of the second fan, and that the railroad company had thus far escaped the enforcement of this threat by agreeing to run the second fan at a few short stated intervals only during each day. In considering the case, it occurred to us to incline the lower edge of the shutter, instead of making it parallel with the axis of the fan,. by which means we thought that the waves of air might be broken

In open cast mining of coal, the cost per ton of output is four to five times less and labor productivity five to six times higher than in under- ground mining. This is why the coal industry of the USSR is oriented toward giving priority to the development of open cast coal mining. Deposits of coal which lend themselves to open cast mining in the USSR are enormous, with 90% of them located in the eastern part of the country. The technique is by no means limited to the eastern part, however-despite wide variations in climate, other parts of the Soviet Union also use open cast mining. The occurrence and type of coal deposits in the USSR vary greatly. Some of them are flat coal seams 2 to 40 m thick, and a few are even thicker. There are also deposits having a complex mode of occurrence, such as a series of seams of different thicknesses with angles of dip varying from slightly inclined to steep, often with dislocations. Overburden materials are quite diverse with regard to physical and mechanical properties. There are three kinds encountered-loose or unconsolidated overburden, medium-hard material, and hard rock. The stripping ratio, i.e., the amount of cover per ton of mined coal, varies from 1 to 12 cu m per ton. SYSTEMS OF MINING The great diversity of natural conditions has brought forth a variety of technologies and techniques in the open cast mining of coal. In open cast practice, the following systems of mining are used : (1) a transportation system in which the overburden is transported to spoil banks by rail or by truck; (2) a system with direct disposal of overburden, the rocks being dumped on spoil banks with a stripping excavator; and

OIL FLOTATION DISCUSSED BY SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SECTION . A meeting of the Section was held in the home of R. H. Norton, 335 W. 27th Street, on Mar. 10, thirty-two members and five guests being present. Vice-chairman Staunton opened the meeting with a description of an experiment he made with oil flotation, and then introduced the guest and speaker of the evening, L. C. Penhoel, of the South-western Engineering Co., who gave a very interesting and informal talk on the subject of Flotation. During the talk, as points were raised, there was a general discussion, in which valuable information was brought out. A number of examples of successful competitive, results by cyanidation and flotation in large milling plants in this country and Mexico were cited and discussed. The latter part of the meeting was devoted to a discussion of the bill introduced in the California State Senate, to license and register engineers. Mr. Ernest Strout gave a most favorable opinion of the principal of licensing mining engineers from his extensive experience in the working out of such a law on the Rand. All members who spoke were opposed to this bill as drafted but felt that the subject was of too great importance to the profession to attempt to amend the present bill in the week or two that remains, and that the passage of a bill that was so crude and inefficient for the achievement of the results desired, would harm the engineering profession. After the meeting adjourned a short time was spent in social intercourse, during which light refreshments were served. The appreciation and thanks of the Section is extended to Mr. and Mrs. R. H. THE problem at the Morning mill is to separate the galena, which contains a great percentage of the silver, from the sphalerite, making each into a commercial product. The ore as received from the nine is dumped into hopper-bottomed bins of 1200 tons capacity. These are divided into five sections, the first section being the regularly used section and the re-mainder used as a reserve bin. The ore is first passed through a 9 by 15-in. Blake jaw-crusher with an opening of 4 in. This allows a ham-mer head to pass through without damage. The crusher discharges to a conveyor that delivers the ore into a two-section punched-plate trommel screen with 1 ½ and 2-in. openings. The undersize is carried by means of conveyors to the mill bins. The oversize passes over a shaking feeder and through a spray or high-pressure water to a picking-belt, where waste and crude ore is hand-sorted. About 4 per cent of the ore by weight is picked out as waste, assaying about 0.6 per cent lead, and this is discarded over the dump. About 4 per cent of the ore by weight is removed as crude ore, assaying 10 oz. silver, 30 per cent lead, and S per cent zinc, and is shipped direct to the smelter. The remainder of the oversize from the picking-belt is con-veyed to a 4-ft. Symons cone crusher with 1-in. opening, which is interesting as a new introduction in this dis-trict. The machine consumes approximately 40 hp. and the pinion shaft travels 555 r.p.m. The horsepower is rather high, but the machine has an extraordinarily large capacity, and, due to the unique construction, there is no danger of tramp steel causing any damage, as in that case the discharge "opening" is automatically

As the theory and the practice of valuing mines have never been discussed in the Transactions, a paper on the subject may be acceptable, even though not exhaustive. The method here indicated is set forth, not as a model of perfection to be followed absolutely, to the exclusion of any other system based on sound scientific, commercial and equitable principles, but merely as an aid to mining engineers and financiers in estimating the value of mining-property. This paper is intended merely to point out certain financial features of the question, and not at all to go into the theories of the formation of mineral veins, extremely valuable as it must, of course, be to understand the laws of the earth's formation and of its various changes, which are the basis of such important sciences as geology and mineralogy, and highly useful as guides in determining the probable existence and extension of mineral deposits. Financial Elements of Mine- Valuation. The practice of basing the stock-exchange price of mining shares upon reports, periodically received from the mine-captain or manager, stating that in his opinion the mine is " improving " in this or that level, and is worth so much " per fathom," is, of course, absurd. Everybody experienced in metalliferous mining is aware that a mineral vein varies in thickness and also in percentage of metal in different parts of the same mine. THE following notes are presented in an endeavour to point out the disadvantages attending the use of chrome brick in reverberatory furnaces used in the treatment of materials that are too valuable to allow any great amount of metal absorption by the brick. Several years ago one of the large Eastern copper refineries decided to utilize basic material in place of siliceous material in the walls of their reverberatory furnaces for the treatment of very foul blister copper, as the latter rapidly corroded the siliceous linings. It was also expected that there would be less slag formation, with a consequent decrease in the cost of treatment and a reduction in the metal losses. Magnesite brick were first used, but while the corrosive action of the foul material was greatly reduced, and the amount of. slag formed was very much less, the magnesite proved to be unsatisfactory in certain parts of the furnace, because of its tendency to crack and span badly when subjected to the alternate heating and cooling that takes place in a reverberatory refining furnace. This made many repairs necessary, and consequent frequent interruption in the operation of the furnace, which, together with the high price of the magnesite brick, ran up the cost of maintenance to an unreasonable amount. It was, therefore, decided to substitute chronic brick for magnesite brick in the parts of the furnace affected. The results, as far as the reverberatory furnace was concerned, were very satisfactory. The corrosion due to the action of the foul blister was small and the amount of slag formed was no greater than when using magnesite, and the tendency to crack and spill shown by the magnesite was eliminated. Gradually the use of chrome brick was extended to all furnaces; those treating blister copper as well as those melting cathodes, and the results were so satin-, factory that the siliceous roofs were replaced by roofs of chrome brick except in certain places where experience showed a more satisfactory performance on the part of the silica brick.

INTRODUCTION The Northern Great Plains Coal Province which occupies approximately 36.6 ha contains about one-half of the nation's total coal resources. About one million ha are underlain by coal that is considered to be mineable from the surface. The topography of the province is predominately plains, rolling hills, and some badland areas characterized by breaks or sharply eroded hills. Elevations range from about 1500 m above sea level on the west to about 600 m above sea level on the eastern boundary. The average slope of the ground is approximately 2 m per km. Streams in the province drain generally easterly and southeasterly (1). In the United States, the Northern Great Plains Province lies within the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, and Colorado. The coal within the province is located almost entirely in the states of North Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming. Although it is relatively low rank, the coal within the province encompasses a large portion of the total remaining U. S. reserves. The U. S. Geological Survey estimates the total remaining coal resources of the United States to be 2.6 trillion mt within 1000 m of the surface, and 2.9 trillion tons within 1830 m of the surface. Of this total, only about 177 billion mt are classified as reserves meaning that they are (1) known in location, quantity and quality from geologic evidence supported by engineering measurements, and (2) economically recoverable based on currently available technologies and current market value (2).

MARINGER and schwopel have investigated the internal friction of high-purity molybdenum. After light tensile deformation, they observed internal-friction peaks at about 230° to 290°C, 310" to 370°C, and 820° to 870°C, which they have attributed to the interstitials carbon and nitrogen, and to stress relaxation across grain boundaries, respectively. The electron-beam melting technique has been successfully applied to refractory metals including molybdenum. By this technique single crystals and higher-purity levels than those of commercial molybdenum are readily obtained. Since electron-beam processed molybdenum possesses such desirable qualities, it seems reasonable to determine: u) if internal-friction peaks do exist in these single crystals, and b) if so, whether or not these peaks can possibly be attributed to the motion of specific interstitials. The molybdenum crystal used in this investigation received four melting passes in the electron-beam furnace. This crystal was about 11 in. long and had an orientation 4 deg from the [loo]. The process of making wire consisted of grinding the crystal rod to a diameter of 0.040 in. and then electropolishing to a final diameter of 0.030 in. Since Maringer and schwopel have indicated that the peak at 230" to 290°C may be due to the presence of carbon, the wire was cut into two equal lengths and one length was carburized prior to the internal-friction measurements. The critical condition necessary for the controlled addition of carbon proved to be a difficult problem. Therefore, a simpler nonequilibrium method was used. This consisted of carburizing at 2000°C in graphite powder to obtain a case, annealing at higher temperatures in vacuum to partially dissolve carbon into the molybdenum, and then removing the remaining case by dissolving it elec-trolytically. After this treatment, metallographic examination of a small section of the specimen revealed carbides in the matrix. Vacuum fusion and carbon analyses for both the virgin (as melted) and carburized specimens are given in Table I. The steady-state operation of an isothermal, counter-current reactor in which a mouing bed of hematite particles is reduced by hydrogen has been modeled mathematically using a generalized single-particle kinetic formulation for topochemical reduction with formation of the intermediate oxides, wustite and magnetite. Throughout the world nuclear power re- actors are being designed and constructed as the energy source for stationary power plants. They are built to power submarines, surface ships, and long-range aircraft and to provide small package power plants that can be set up with relative ease in outlying areas. Regardless of type, most of these plants are designed to operate at the highest permissible temperatures and with the greatest possible burn-up of fuel. On paper it is now possible to design a nuclear power plant that will out-perform all existing types of power-generating plants, and at costs which are attractive. Such plants, however, are not now being built, nor will they ever be built, unless major engineering advances are made in the realm of reactor materials. The reason for this is straight- forward enough. Although it is known that huge quantities of energy can be generated in nuclear fuels within short periods of time, as yet there are no construction materials capable of withstanding the severe conditions that would exist within a power reactor operating with ultrahigh output.

THE IRON HUNTER. By Chase S. Osborn, pp. 316, Ills. 10. The MacMillan Company, New York. 1919. An autobiography, the story of a Hoosier boy who fought his way to manhood and power through early misfortune and poverty, from street urchin and newsboy, to editor and author; from lumberjack and dock walloper to statesman and Governor of Michigan. The reader has the measure of the man in the first chapter, a dramatic recital of how the fighting boy editor cleaned up a lawless mining camp of 40 years ago. The thread of the narrative is the author's life-long devotion to outdoor living, ex-ploration and travel. Residing in Sault de Sainte Marie, Mich., in the heart of the Lake Superior country, he took his delight and, incidentally, found his fortune in prospecting the north woods for iron ore; eventually, extending his travels to the continents and many of the islands of the world, he discovered what, he believes-to be a great iron range in Madagascar. In this book there is plenty of anecdote, a great deal of wholesome social and po¬litical philosophy and some interesting sidelights on the characters of some of the author's prominent contemporaries in the political life of Michigan. The style is direct and animated, flavored and illuminated with the vernacular of Hoosierdom and the woods country of the North. The author levies on the vocabulary of the sciences and the classics for many a noun and adjective and, with Rooseveltian license, now and then coins a word. The reader's interest will be gripped from cover to cover, albeit he may occasionally need a dictionary. R. C. A.

In a recent paper,' a very early suggestion by Ludwik2 concerning the nature of the mechanical behavior of metals has becn reexamined and extended. In essence it was suggested that there exists, at least under certain conditions, a mechanical equation of state; that the stress required for flow depends upon the instantaneous values of the strain, strain rate, and temperature, and not upon their past values. It is proposed that under these circumstances thc stress does not depend upon past history of these variables, but is like the temperature of a gas that depends only upon the instantaneous values of the pressure and volume. This notion has not been applied to present-day studies of metals, though it is especially applicable to the study of creep. It is the purpose of this paper to analyze the significance and possible range of applicability of this idea and to determine how it influences the accepted ideas concerning creep. Stress-strain Relations It is wcll known that the stress-strain curves of metals are influenced by both train rate and temperature. For a fixed strain rate and temperature there is associated with each metal a stress-strain curve. If either the strain rate or temperature is changed a new stress-strain curve will be characteristic (Fig. I). Ores of the Mammoth mining district, some 45 miles northeast of Tucson, Arizona, are treated by Mammoth-St. Anthony, Ltd. The ores now treated come from a complex system of veins and faults, comprising three mines, in close proximity: The Mohawk, Mammoth and Collins. The ore treated in the past was oxide ore, which contains economic amounts of gold, silver, lead, molybdenum, and vanadium (as wulfenite and vanadanite). The lead-zinc sulphide ore has never been treated before. The Ore The sulphide ore contains galena, sphalerite, marmatite, pyrite and some chal-copyrite, covellite, chalcocite and bornite, as well as small amounts of gold and silver. The value of the ore is principally in the lead and zinc content. The lead-zinc sulphides are substantially liberated at a minus 65-mesh grind. However, a large part of the chalcopyrite and other copper minerals is not freed, but remains as pin points on the sphalerite. Economically, the copper is unimportant. The gangue is a rhyolite granite, with very little limestone. There is no molybdenum or vanadikm in the sulphide ore. History of Sulphide Treatment Test work on samples of the sulphide ore was conducted by several equipment companies, the Arizona Bureau of Mines and the company's laboratory. Results of this test work indicated that for some reason, which at the time could not be explained, recoveries would be only about 65 per cent lead and 50 per cent zinc. Notwithstanding this, because of the nation's need for metals, the management built a 150-ton treatment plant. The mill was started in June 1942. During December 1942, using the standard method of treating lead-zinc ore, the monthly results were as shown in Table I. These results were poor. Too much lead was in the zinc concentrate, and too much zinc in the lead concentrate. It should be noted here. that prior to December attempts were made to depress the sphalerite with large and varied amounts of cyanide, zinc sulphate, and sodium sulphite with poor results.
