Transportation cost is a key factor in both the profitability and competitiveness of coal marketing. With coal exportation growing rapidly, moisture control is important. Although in some cases, too much moisture reduction can lead to losses in transportation and pollution problems, there is normally justification for reducing moisture by mechanical means as much as possible. This paper reviews current technology of dewatering coal fines and examines the comparative capabilities of screens, filters, and centrifuges. Financial considerations are stated and implications of capital and operating costs on selection are discussed.

An apparatus for agglomerating fine particles was developed in 1969 as a joint effort of Stauffer Chemical and O’Brien Industrial Equipment. Commercial sized units were built for agglomerating home dishwashing detergents. Recently, as a result of further pilot development, variation of bed depth and cage configuration has resulted in a means of controlling the amount of internal classification from a minimum, producing small agglomerates, to a maximum, producing compact rounded agglomerates. Little or no external classification of discharged agglomerates is needed. At maximum internal classification the agglomerates roll on a bed of fine particles rather than the shell resulting in increased agglomerate size.

Complying with air pollution regulations created the need to dispose of increased sulfuric acid production by the Morenci smelter. As a result, a two-module leaching plant was constructed to leach Morenci flotation tailings. The leaching plant was equipped to perform the following operations: leach feed pumping, agitated leaching, two-stage countercurrent decantation, neutralization of leached tailings, and copper precipitation. Ancillary facilities were provided for neutralizer and flocculant preparation as well as precipitant handling and recovery of precipitates. Plant control is automatic from a central control panel supervised on a shift schedule by one operator and two helpers. Construction of the first module was initiated in April 1973 and leaching of tailings commenced in November 1974. Construction of the second module began in January 1975 and was completed in November 1975.

A sequence of 250 unconfined compression tests were completed on a common marine shale indicative of the overburden strata of east- central Ohio. The samples were of a light gray clay shale of Pennsylvanian age. The shales considered are obvious layered materials with distinct bedding planes. For this reason there is sufficient evidence to consider this material as anisotropic in nature. With a properly chosen reference coordinate system this anisotropy can be reduced to a layered orthotropic characterization. This implies that the mechanical properties can be specified with regard to principal material directions. With this nature in mind a systematic study of the combined influences of strain rate and moisture conditioning was initiated. Of particular interest is the variations in unconfined ultimate compressive strength with variations in the controlled parameters of strain rate, moisture conditioning level and direction of testing. Results of this particular phase of the program are presented.

By H C GEORGE (Min & Met, June, 260 2000 words) With a growth of 718 per cent in the petroleum industry from 1901 to 1931, there was a corresponding increase in the demand for technically trained men in the industry This was first met by increasing numbers of college graduates from the old established courses m chemistry, geology and engineering However, there began to be felt a need for scientists and engineers specially trained for the petroleum industry In 1912 the University of Pittsburgh established the first department in any university in the world that offered major work in petroleum engineering and petroleum geology In Europe, the first major work in petroleum engineering was offered in England in 1913 at the University of Birmingham The University of California and Stanford University offered major work in petroleum engineering in 1915 Since that time at least 10 other American universities and colleges have offered major work and at least 12 others are now offering some courses dealing with petroleum, and the petroleum industry.

In the United States, the consumption of lignite and subbituminous coals is increasing. A variety of energy-oriented companies have leased large blocks of reserves, new large power plants are in operation and being constructed, and new producing mines are being developed. The Bureau of Mines has maintained an active interest in the utilization of low-rank coals for many years. In 1951, with the completion of the Bureau's Grand Forks Coal Research Laboratory, an organizational unit was established for studies in lignite preparation. Since that time, numerous investigations have been completed. This research has dealt almost exclusively with lignite, but since subbituminous coals have many similar characteristics, the findings can often be applied to both types of coal.

IN the sections, Figures 1, 2, and 3, are shown three crucibles that have been applied to substantially the same furnace, all the conditions having been the same except a variation of one foot of bosh, and a slight variation in the angle of the same. The bosh of No. 3 was originally the same as No. 2, the additional foot in diameter being the result of three months' cutting. Beginning with No. 1, which was 5 feet 6 inches diameter, with tuyeres 5 feet 4 inches high, and cinder-tap four feet from bottom, great trouble was found in holding iron a proper length of time, four hours being the outside limit when working well, and two hours or less if working badly. An oxidative alkaline pressure leach is shown to increase the magnetic susceptibility of coal-pyrite particles. The leach was successfully exploited as a pretreatment in the magnetic desulfurization of an eastern Canadian coal. Greater than 50% total sulfur (65% pyritic sulfur) rejection at 85% clean coal yield was achieved using a high-gradient magnetic separator (HGMS) at 1.3 T and 53 mm/s (2 in. per sec) flow rate, after pretreatment at 0.5 mot NaOH, 85ºC (185ºF), 930 kPa (135 psi) air pressure, 15 minutes retention time, and 20% solids by weight (w/w). Without pretreatment, sulfur rejection at these HGMS settings was less than 5%.

Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated front sources of information. To these the Library, through Its Library Service Bureau, can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive especial attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and photographic copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining neaps, and to furnish general information on the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should he made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be, sent more promptly and in more usable shape.

On Feb. 16, 1948, the Board of Directors of AIME authorized the publishing of "Technical Notes" in METALS TECHNOLOGY. The purpose is to provide prompt publication of very short items of the following general types: I. Results of short investigations which do not warrant a paper. 2. The conclusions of extensive investigations of insufficient general interest to justify a regular paper. 3. Conclusions arising in the course of an investigation, which, because of interest to others in the field, the author wishes to present prior to completion of the investigation. 4. Pertinent factual comment (not mere argument) on the subject matter of previous "Notes." Such Notes will be subject to the approval of the Auxiliary and AIME Publications Committees, but can be handled more promptly than regular papers because they need not be referred to readers. The recommended maximum length is 500 words; notes in excess of 1,000 words will not be considered for this type of publication. A graph or photograph may be included as part of the note when particularly illustrative. As with regular papers, contributions to the new section should be submitted to the Secretarv of the AIME. Please furnish two copies, each complete with illustrations.

INTRODUCTION The United States has an abundance of coal reserves in thick seams. Most of these resources are in the West. Surface mining operations in thick seams are highly efficient, particularly in the West, but methods for mining thick seams underground are very limited. The percentage of resource recovery in deep mining of thick seams is often as low as 30 percent. It is estimated that there are 45 billion tons of coal reserves for underground mining in seams greater than 10-ft thick in the western states alone. With such a large available reserve base and low rates of recovery, the need to develop the technology to mine these thick reserves is quite evident. As the definition of a thick seam varies widely from country to country, a thick seam is defined here as any seam where the height is such that it is not minable in a single pass with available mining equipment.

Approximately 100 million mt of magnetic reject tailings, which contain apatite and about 1% yttrium and rare-earth elements, exist in the eastern U.S. as a result of iron ore mining operations. At the present time, no economic process is available for recovering yttrium from this material. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) studied the problem to determine if an effective low-cost method could be found, thereby increasing our domestic yttrium reserves. [Fig. 1] is a line drawing of a photograph taken during microprobe analysis of a sample of the tailings, and shows the distribution of yttrium. Typical analysis of this material is 0.14% yttrium and 1.1% rare-earth elements (mainly lanthanum through neodymium). Over half of the yttrium is present as a hydrated Ca-Y silicate deposited along interfaces in the grain structure; whereas, the remainder of the rare-earth elements occur as Ca-Fe-RE silicates. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James-Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes. It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization.

THERE are two general classes of problems in connection with electric furnaces. First, those relating to the best utilization of the electrical power inside the furnace; second, those connected with the bringing of the electrical power to the point where it is to be utilized. Referring particularly to the latter class of problems, many calculations have been made, covering a wide variety of furnaces, to check the electrical capacity and power factor found from test. The following analysis, made for the purpose of determining the maximum capacity and approximate performance of a new furnace, to operate at 160 volts on a 60-cycle circuit, may be of interest. The first characteristic necessary to determine is the inductance, since this is the factor that limits the amount of power which can be put into the furnace. Inductance is calculated from the dimensions of the furnace, according to formulas of the U. S. Bureau of Standards,1 as

The idea of parameterizing reserves has only been formalized and scientifically applied for a few years. Its most fully developed application, that of open pits, has been operational only since 1976. Two new versions which have just been issued provide a complete solution to the problem and also a powerful tool for mine planning, and they open up a new field of investigation. This paper describes the basic principles for parameterizing reserves, their application for open-pit mines, the algorithm used, the physical interpretation of the results obtained, their economic use as well as the first prospects offered by a complete parameterization in tm of (I. ti), or of the metal price.

Discussion of the paper of Frederic P. Dewey, presented at the Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912, and printed in Bulletin -No. 70, October, 1912, pp. 1075 to 1101. EDWARD KELLER, Perth Amboy, N. J. (communication to the Secretary *) :-Mr. Dewey, in his paper, offers a liberal addition of new data to those already to be found in the technical literature on this subject. However, now as before, the work issuing from the U. S. mints and assay-offices conveys the impression that systematic sampling in those institutions is more or less a secondary consideration, the chief attention being given to the principle of producing approximately homogeneous bars; recourse being taken to remelting or refining the bullion. This practice has been definitely rejected in the realm of copper-bullion sampling, for the reason that in such operations there are always unaccounted losses. Does not the same objection hold true for gold-bullions; although, perhaps,in a lesser degree ? Differences of opinion would seem justified on the following statements made by Mr. Dewey: 1. "Only two classes of alloys can form homogeneous bars-those that are solid solutions, and the eutectics."

Inflation, tight money and keen competition spur companies to consider advanced material handling systems capable of reducing cost per ton of moving ore, waste or men and supplies. Since transportation charges account for an average of about 25% of the total delivered price of a product, then this cost center may actually determine the economic value of a new deposit. This being so, it is interesting to note that of the 1.4 billion tons of revenue freight carried by all Class I carriers of the nation in 1967, over 247 million tons or 17.5% were industrial minerals or products dependent on industrial minerals, i.e., glass, gypsum board, brick, etc. Because most bulk commodities have a comparatively low market value and are usually classified for lower than normal freight rates, railroads rely on large volumes and better equipment utilization to effect an equitable return. It is for this reason that the unit and shuttle train concept came into being. The average rate per ton-mile of all materials hauled by rail in 1968 was 1.31 cents. The low rates existing for industrial minerals contributed to this low average as did unit and shuttle train rates.

Within the last 15 years David Brown Gear Industries has manufactured approximately 200 large mill gears over 6m diam., 58 of them over 9 m and up to 12 m diam. The experience has not been without problems, due to a lack of clear understanding of the loads and stresses imposed on large gear wheels. American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA) practices suggest that a service factor be used for mill gears. But what is meant by "service factor"? The layman might be forgiven for believing that the term is synonymous with "safety factor," but this is certainly not true. The service factor is an aggregate of the following in some proportion: -An application factor, i.e., an allowance for the fact that systems do not run smoothly with uniform torque. -An ignorance factor covering the imperfections in the basic gear calculation. -Possibly a safety factor. In the following sections some of the ways in which the limits of applicability can be overstepped are discussed.
