ThE solution of a diatomic gas such as 0, or N2 in a metal usually follows Sieverts' law; i. e., Here C is the solute concentration at equilibrium and P, the gas pressure. The proportionality constant Ks is also the equilibrium constant for the reaction 1/2 02 (at pressure, P) - 0 (in solution at [21 concentration., C). to use oxygen as an illustrative gas. Sieverts' law is therefore interpreted to indicate that diatomic gases go into metallic solution atomically and that the solute "gas" atoms interact negligibly with each other. Of course, this interpretation is strictly valid only over the temperature interval in which the reaction indicated in [Z] can be investigated. At temperatures several hundreds of degrees below this interval, the possibility of interactions between solute atoms is conceivable. Indeed, from internal-friction measurements some evidence for the existence of groupings of oxygen atoms in tantalum solid solutions was presented a few years ago.1,2 Over a range of solute concentration, the experimental oxygen internal-friction peak in tantalum, measured as a function of temperature at constant frequency of vibration, can be described as the sum of two elemental peaks, each corresponding to a separate relaxation process. At 0.7 cps, the height of the elemental peak found at 137°C is proportional to the oxygen content, whereas the height of the one at 162°C varies as the square of the oxygen concentration. The 137°C peak was presumed to arise from the stress-induced ordering of oxygen atoms among various classes of octahedral sites in the manner proposed by Snoek.3 The 162°C peak was attributed to a somewhat similar stress-induced ordering process, in which each oxygen atom was interacting with a neighboring oxygen atom. Similarly, the experimental peak due to nitrogen in tantalum can also be described as the sum of two peaks. The height of one varies as the nitrogen concentration and the other as the square of this quantity. In fact, some evidence of solute interactions exist for all oxygen and nitrogen solid solutions of Group V transition metals. However, the interaction energy was not obtained previously for any alloy. The determination of this quantity, as a part of a more intensive study of the interaction between oxygen atoms in solid solution in tantalum, is reported in this paper. Mine financing, or providing adequate capital for developing and bringing a mining property into production, is an essential requirement for a successful operation. Today it presents a different picture than even twenty-five years ago. The day appears to be gone when a mining property could pay its own way from grass roots to production. The country has been quite thoroughly combed for surface showings from which sufficient initial profit could be immediately garnered to pay for further development and production facilities. The four M's for success in mining-mineral, market, management, and money-are still essential; but doubled or tripled wage costs and steep advances in cost of equipment and supplies throw increased emphasis on adequate capital funds for bringing in a prospect and making it a producer. Consequently, the old picturesque, although seldom rewarding, grub- staking procedure where a single venturesome citizen might advance funds to a prospector on a fifty-fifty basis for whatever discovery he might find, has largely disappeared. Its place, to some degree, has been taken by the small syndicate of venturesome members who band together for furnishing funds to a group of prospectors for the same general purposes. Such a syndicate has a definite organization and is usually assured of sufficient initial funds, or flow of funds, to carry on work for several years. It is headed by an engineer-promoter who has had considerable field experience as well as personal knowledge of his prospecting crews. For the owner of a potential mining property who has ample capital, the problem is to determine (1) justification for the necessary investment in exploration and development, and (2) the economics of the enterprise as to size and degree of integration of the final operating entity. If the owner of such a property has little or no capital, he also faces these same basic problems but, in addition, must be able to present the findings of fact and persuade the prospective investor that the enterprise will produce

For low-head pumping of small quantities of water, the water jet, or hydraulic educter, has been used to advantage by Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Co. in the Tri-State district. Water-jet pumps are used for draining sumps and pockets up to 15 ft. in depth. They have been used very successfully when only moderate amounts of water are encountered in taking up bottom. A small, easily handled unit is desirable in this work, especially while opening and deepening a new stope. Small air pumps are convenient but can be used only on the day shift, when air is available. Obviously, a jet pump of smaller capacity but operating 24 hr. prevents lost time at the start of each shift. No tests have been made on their power efficiency, but admittedly it is low. However, for certain kinds of work this is offset by their handiness, low initial cost, low upkeep, and reliability. They will handle slime and sand without ill effect, and will continue to pump indefinitely on air. This foolproof 24-hr. performance has led to their continued use at some places even after electric pumps with better power efficiency could have been installed. The success of jet pumps depends largely upon a cheap source of high-pressure water. Owing to mine depths in the Tri-State district, pump pressures range from 100 to 150 Ib. per sq. in. In many mines it is common practice to handle the normal inflow water with triplex pumps ranging in size from 3 to 8 in. The pumps operate 24 hr. per day, and, in order to handle emergency conditions, are speeded slightly faster than necessary to pump the normal inflow. The sump level is governed by controlling the by-pass water with a butterfly valve and float. This method is somewhat wasteful of power, but permits the pumps to operate with a minimum of attention. Such an installation is visited once a day to check lubrication. Hence, if some of this water, normally by-passed to the main sump, were used to operate a jet pump, the power cost could be considered low regardless of efficiency. Figs. I and 2 show two water jets that have done satisfactory work. The one in Fig. 2, made up entirely of pipe fittings, may be of interest partially because of its novelty, but does better work than its appearance indicates. The pipe fittings for this jet as shown cost $2.20. Some improvement in its design may be made by cutting out the 135 by 1¼-in. reducer to a smoother taper as shown by dotted lines. A 3-in. suction pipe is sometimes used in order that the discharge may be as straight as possible. A 2-in. discharge line has been used frequently, but 3-in. pipe is used where several hundred feet of discharge is required.

Many heats of steel of low carbon value have been known to produce brittle pieces of steel. The brittleness is believed to be due to the impurities located within the grain boundaries. Such brittle steels have been examined with an optical microscope to ascertain the nature and the amount of the impurities present at the grain boundaries. Due to the relatively low resolving power of the optical microscope, the impurities are not visible in fine detail. The writer obtained some sheet steel and proceeded to determine the location of the impurities and to show the application of the electron microscope to the study of grain boundaries. One sample was known to be capable of becoming embrittled, whereas another sample was believed to be much less susceptible to embrittlement. Treatment of Specimens The specimens were embrittled by annealing above the A3 point under mildly oxidizing conditions. One piece of ingot iron could not withstand a 90" bend, whereas another piece of ingot iron was not affected and could withstand a 90" bend. The brittle piece was then annealed at a high temperature in a hydrogen atmosphere. The annealed ingot iron was termed cured and could withstand a 90" bend very easily. The three specimens examined will be designated as brittle, good. and cured in the discussion that follows. Procedure The sizes of the specimens were as follows: one piece of brittle ingot iron-3/8 by 35 in.; one piece of good ingot iron-96 by 1/8 in.; one piece of cured ingot iron-36 by 54 in. The specimens were too small to be polished by hand and therefore were mounted in bakelite. The polishing procedure was carried out in the conventional manner with the use of 1/0 through 3/0 papers, and the final polish was done with alumina on a billiard cloth. The specimens were then etched in a 4 pct solution of picral in alcohol, and then they were examined through an optical microscope. An area was chosen that showed distinct grain boundaries, and an effort was made to keep near this area when pulling the replicas REPLICA TECHNIQIJE The replica technique used in the preparation of the replicas for examination under the electron microscope is described in Electron Metallography.' It consists essentially of the following steps: 1. Obtaining a suitably etched specimen. 2. Applying a swab of ethylene di-chloride on the surface. 3. Applying a formvar solution on the surface. 4. Placing a screen on any desired spot. 5. Breathing on the fornivar layer. 6. Applying scotch tape on the screen and film. 7. Pulling the film and the screen up with the Scotch tape. 8. Separating the screen from the Scotch tape. This replica technique is very similar to the one described by Harker and Shaefer. However, with the added step, the percentage of replicas removed is very much higher regardless of the length of the time from the etching of the specimen to the actual pulling of the replica. The replicas were then shadow cast with manganese at a filament height to replica distance ratio of 1 1/2:7. This produced a very high contrast replica for use in the electron microscope. One of the dificulties encountered with this study was the restricted area of the specimen. The width of the specimens was the same as that of the 200 mesh nickel supporting screen. In order to increase the effective area, the screens were cut down as shown in Fig 1. The arrow indicates the direction in which the replica was pulled. This operation made it possible to obtain a large percentage of good replicas. Fig 3 shows an electron micrograph of a brittle piece of ingot iron and a grain boundary that was polished mechanically. The surface is very rough probably due to the incomplete removal of the flowed layer by the picral etchant. The grain boundary does show evidence of impurities. It was decided to electropolish the specimens to obtain a much smoother surface than the one obtained by mechanical polishing. ELECTROPOLISHING The specimens were cut in half to expose the metal on the back side. The exposed metal had sufficient area to make good electrical contact and electropolishing was carried out easily. The conditions for electropolishing were 0.9 amp, 35 volts, and 25 sec. in an electrolyte composed of 850 cc of ethyl alcohol, 100 cc distilled water, and 50 cc of perchloric acid. The Precipitation of nitrides in quenched Fe-N alloys, aged between 25° and 200°C, was studied by transmission electron microscopy. Different dislocation substructures were introduced into the materials by recrystallization, cold working, and by Phase transformation prior to the introduction of nitrogen. It was found that the precipitated nitrides, tentatively identified as Fe16N2, have (100) habit planes. Nucleation takes place Preferentially at dislocations and at subboundaries. It sometimes occurs in the matrix, probably on vacancy clusters, but rarely on high-angle boundaries. The process of nucleation on dislocations and subboundaries is very temperature dependent. At room temperature there is no particular orientation relationship between the dislocations involved and the (100) planes on which the nitride Particles formed. With increasing temperature, the nucleation sites tend to become restricted to those dislocation segments lying in (100) planes. The change of yield stress of the 0.022 and 0.043 pet N alloys during quench aging can be correlated semiquantitatively with the change in particle distribution. Strain aging in quenched alloys can be separated into two stages. The early stage is attributed to nitrogen segregation to dislocations and the later stage is associated with precipitation. When previously quench-aged specimens were strained and aged, no additional Precipitates could be seen, although a considerable amount of strain aging occurred. DURING the past two decades, the precipitation of nitrides from a iron has been extensively studied by various techniques. It has been established that two types of nitride exist. ADOLPH GREINER, Seraing, Belgium :-I have nothing special to add to Professor Hubert's paper except to say that there are some little things that it would be well to have cor-rected when the paper comes to be published. In dealing with the thermal efficiency of the engine, you will find that the 29.84 per cent was a very high one. Professor Hubert has forgotten those engines built under the Cockerill type, but he has referred to them in Appendix II. At our works at Cockerill we have built 63 engines, giving 63,000 h.p., and the other companies who have received licenses have built 113 engines, making 103,000 h.p., and aggregating 176 engines and 166,000 h.p. Eight years ago I had the pleasure of giving to the Institute the results obtained up to that time. Since then a good many engines have been constructed. In 1898 I thought a blast-furnace producing 100 tons of pig iron would allow 3,000 h.p. Professor Witz and Professor Hubert show that with the same production of pig the new engines take 3,800 h.p. out of the gas. At present at Cockerill we make 700 to 800 tons of pig iron per day, and we hope to have 26,000 h.p; in a few years. At present we have only half of that in gas-engines, but we hope to have in five or six years all the gas out of these furnaces to the number of 25,000 or 26,000 h.p. MR. MOST of the roofing granules produced in Pennsylvania are made by two companies at three plants. The Advance Industrial Supply Co. has three quarries and a mill at Gladhill Station, in southern Adams County. The Funkhouser Company is actively engaged in mining, quarrying and milling at Charmian, about one mile west of Gladhill Station, and at Delta, in southern York County. These three plants produced approximately 100,000 short tons of granules in 1943. The production of roofing granules in 1937 for the whole country was only about 500,000 tons, generally indicating the large growth of the industry since that time. The fundamentals of producing roofing granules were discussed comprehensively by G. W. Josephson in a paper before the Industrial Minerals Division in October 1943 (Mining Technology, March 1944). The purpose of this paper is to describe the actual methods of mining the rock and milling it to make roofing granules, as practiced by the three Pennsylvania plants. MINING AND MILLING Funkhouser Company (Delta) The Funkhouser Company, near Delta, in southern York County, Pennsylvania, operates three joined quarries and a mine in the Peach Bottom slate. The joined quarries extend 1200 ft. in a northeast southwest direction along the strike of the slate cleavage and are about 200 ft. wide. The working face is about 45 ft. high. The quarrying operation is rather simple: Ingersoll-Rand Jackhamers, 1-in. and 1 1/4-in., with hollow drill steel, are used to undercut the quarry face with10-ft. holes. The face is "blown" and allowed to slump on the quarry floor. Loaded by a Marion electric shovel into trucks, the shattered rock is taken to the primary crusher 2500 ft. away. In addition to the normal quarrying operations, a drift into the northeast wall of the middle quarry was begun about 1935 and has advanced about 2000 ft. since then. Rooms have been driven at angles to the drift along choice beds of slate. The drifts and rooms have a roof more than 35 ft. high and the main drift and rooms are all more than 40 ft. wide. There is no cribbing at any place in the mine. Several of the rooms were driven upward on a 5º slope and in some of them there was stoping. Ingersoll-Rand Jackhamers are used, and only wet drilling is practiced. When visited in January 1940, an electric shovel was operating at the head of the drift, scooping up the slate blasted out of the working face. This, too, is trucked to the primary crusher. Some of the better quality slate is saved for making slate shingles. The primary crusher, which is a No. 30 McCulley gyratory, receives the slate from the trucks and crushes it to about 2-in. size (Fig. I). This product travels by a 30-in. belt conveyor to Niagara vibrating screens with 2-in. holes. The minus 2-in. product moves to a storage silo by bucket

In the death of Major A. B. desaulles at South Bethlehem, Pa., on Dec. 24, 1917, the Institute lost a valued and esteemed member, one of the last few of those who, in May, 1871, at Wilkes-Barre, attended the first meeting of the Institute, in response to a call that had been issued by R. P. Rothwell, Eckley B. Coxe, and Martin Coryell. Major desaulles was born Jan. 8, 1840, at New Orleans, and was the son of Louis and Armidc Longer desaulles, each of French descent. As a boy he was privately tutored in the South, and then schooled in New England to enter the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he was graduated with honors in the class of '59. Following his graduation he studied in France and Germany for two years, returning to New Orleans in 1861 to enter the Confederate Army, in which he served with distinction as an engineer throughout the Civil War, rising to the rank of Major and the command of his Corps. After the close of the war he pursued his studies abroad for another year, returning to New York in April, 1866, when he became engineer for the New York & Schuylkill Coal Company, and remained at its plant near Wilkes-Barre until October, 1871, when it was sold to the Philadelphia & Reading Coal and Iron Company. He then returned to New York where for several years he was engaged in the practice of his profession. In 1869, he married Catharine M. Heckscher, daughter of Charles Heckscher of New York City. Mrs. desaulles survives him. In 1876, Major desaulles became superintendent of the Dunbar Furnace Company in Fayette County, Pa., with which company he remained until 1883. As a feature of the Pittsburgh meeting in May, 1879, Major and Mrs. desaulles entertained the members of the Institute at dinner at Dunbar on the occasion of the Institute's visit to Dun-bar furnace. In 1883, he took up the formation of the Oliphant Furnace Company in that county, of which he became and remained the head for five years. He was then called to the superintendency of the New Jersey Zinc Company at South Bethlehem, Pa., in which position he remained until his retirement,from active service in 1911, maintaining, however, hi.; keen interest in the metallurgy and smelting of zinc, in collaboration with his son Charles, a member of the Institute and a Director of the American Smelting and Refining Company. From 1888, until his death, he resided in South Bethlehem, a prominent and highly respected citizen of that progressive and stirring community. Major desaulles was a member of the Protestant Espicopal Church, and at the time of his death was a vestryman of the Church of the Nativity at South Bethlehem. He was president of the Men's Club of the Church of the Nativity. His kindly nature led him to take an active interest in the promotion of healthful sports among young men. He was ever active in all things pertaining to the general welfare and uplift of his fellowmen. In his death the profession has lost a distinguished engineer and mctallurgist and our country a patriotic able citi-zen and man of affairs—one greatly beloved by those whom he honored with his friendship, and respected and looked up to by all who were privileged to know him.

The model developed by Tuylor for the calculation of Polycrystalline yield strength has been applied to the case of an aggregate hawing a preferred orientation. In general this procedure requires the specification of texture by means of weighting factors applied to specific orientations. The problem to which the model has been applied is that of the yield-strength aniso-tropy of cold-rolled aluminum whose rolling texture was described as a combination of (110)[112] and (311) [112] In this case yield-strength anisotropy is defined by the rutio of yield strength measured at an angle 8 to the rolling direction to that measured along the rolling direction. The method of calculation of yield-strength ratio as a function of ? is described and the results show good agreement with experimental values. The orthotropic yield criterion suggested by Hill has been applied to the results and the strain ratio R also calculated as a function of ?. This has been compared with calculations using the method suggested by Elias, Heyer, and Smith which does not exhibit suck good agreement with observation. one deficietlcy of the method presented is that the strain ratios used by are those applying to iso-Irobic materials. The method should therefore be reg-clrded only as a first abbroximation to the prediction of anisotropy. THE problem of calculating the stress-strain characteristics of polycrystalline aggregates from the properties of single crystals has attracted attention for a number of years. The most important contributions to this study have been those due to: Sachs,' Cox and sopwith,2 Taylor,3 Kochendorfer,4 Batdorf and Budiansky,5 Calnan and Clews,6 Bishop and Hill,7,8 Kocks,9 Budiansky, Hashin, and sanders, 10 Kroner,11 Cyzak, Bow, and payne, 12 Budiansky and Wu,13 and Lin.14 While the earlier work has been largely superseded, recent developments tend to support Taylor's solution" within the restriction imposed by his assumptions. The essential features of Taylor's approach were: 1) the material is rigid-plastic; 2) each grain experiences the same strain components as the aggregate as a whole (the problem was that of uniaxial deformation with principal strain components in the ratio 3) all regions of each grain deform uniformly; 4) work hardening occurs equally on all slip systems. While Bishop and Hill7 have generally validated this approach, there has been some criticism offered. Kocks? as pointed out that since multiple slip must occur the single-crystal data must be determined from orientations arranged such that polyslip takes place. Boas and Hargreaves,15 and others, have shown experimentally that the strain distribution within grains is not uniform, the strains in the vicinity of grain boundaries being less than those in the center of the grains. Both of these criticisms can be largely offset by the suitable choice of single-crystal critical shear stress. However, for the problem analyzed below, the critical shear stress is not directly used and, consequently, these criticisms lose their importance. The more recent contributions have attempted to obtain a more complete analysis by considering an elas-toplastic material and considering interactions between grains of differing orientations. Lin14 has considered the early stages of yielding for a polycrystalline aggregate having specific regions of defined slip plane orientations. On the other hand, Budiansky and Wu13 have allowed for these interactions for randomly disposed grain orientations and have calculated the polycrystalline stress-strain curves for crystals exhibiting either elastic-ideally plastic or kinematic hardening characteristics. This work has shown that yielding commences when the macroscopic stress is 2.2 times the critical shear stress for slip in a single crystal (7,). The yield stress-strain curve then rises becoming asymptotic to a value of 3.072 7,. This is close to the value obtained by Bishop and Hill (3.06) in their confirmation of Taylor's method. This, of course, is to be expected since, at large strain values, the elastic strains are negligible and the rigid-plastic model is satisfactory. The results of Budiansky and Wu indicate that the result obtained by Taylor is 7.7 pct high at a plastic strain which is two times the elastic strain at the initiation of yield. By defining the anisotropy in terms of relative values, the ratio of yield strength at orientation ?, to that measured in the rolling direction, the effect of the discrepancy in Taylor's solution is considered to be of lesser consequence. Therefore, it is anticipated that an analysis based on Taylor's solution, which can be quite straightforward, should provide a reasonable estimation of the anisotropy of materials having a preferred orientation texture. OUTLINE OF TAYLOR'S METHOD In fee metals there are four possible slip planes (the octahedral planes) and in each there are three possible slip directions (the edges of the octahedron), that is a total of twelve possible slip systems. von Mises16 has shown that at least five independent slip systems must become operative in each grain of the polycrystalline aggregate in order to preserve continuity of strain. With this geometrical requirement as basis and the assumptions previously listed, Taylor determined the operative slip systems for a number of orientations of the tensile stress axis specified in the unit stereographic triangle. Introduction The Utah Copper Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation will present its contribution to the A. M. Gaudin Flotation Symposium in four parts. The first two segments will discuss briefly the historical development of the Utah Copper Division and describe the ore body. The third segment will review the facilities and operating procedures for the Utah Copper division's newest plant, the Bonneville Concentrator. The fourth segment describes flotation process circuitry, including molybdenite recovery procedures, at the Arthur and Magna concentrators. (The Bonneville concentrator is a crushing and grinding unit and does not have its own flotation plant). I. Historical Development Progress through change has been the key to the successful operation of the Utah Copper Division for more than 70 years. As the original low-grade copper operation, the pressures to remain competitive and profitable have dictated the timing and extent of each change. Much of the change has occurred through technological and economic advancements in the area of ore concentration. The Utah Copper Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation had its origin June 4, 1903, when the Utah Copper Company was organized. The initial mill of 300 tpd (tons per day) capacity was built at Copperton a few miles below the present Bingham Canyon mine site. From 1904 to 1910, the Copperton mill was expanded to a capacity of 1,000 tpd, and all of the known apparatus for gravity concentration were evaluated.

EVEN though the world has not been crying for more copper for the last three or four years there has been some important mill and smelter construction. Discovery and development of large new high-grade copper deposits in Africa has led to the construction of extensive reduction facilities there, prominent among which is the concentrator and smelter of the Rhokana Corporation at N'Kana. Northern Rhodesia. The 3000-ton concentrator adjoins the central shaft. A little over half a mile to the southeast, at an altitude of 40,010 ft., is the smelter, designed on the site by 1. H. Wynne. It is arranged primarily to treat N'Kana copper concentrates, but can also handle concentrates and direct-smelting ore from outside sources. Excavations were started late in 1930; concrete was first poured on Jan. 6. 1931; and the first blister cop¬per was cast on March 1.9, 1932, less than fifteen months later. During this period, which included several months of heavy tropical rains, some 10,000 cu. yd. of concrete was poured and 41000 tons of structural steel erected under the supervision of construction engineer, A. Ek, with a labor force of 60 to 30 Europeans and about 300 natives. The steelwork was fabricated by Head Wrightson & Co. in England, and the boiler plant equipment furnished and erected by the International Combustion Co. Ltd.

The information in this paper was collected by the author during a five years' residence in the State of Minas Geraes. Outside the State itself, very little is known of the gold-field. Such accounts as have been published are antiquated and contained in publications mostly out of print. The increased attention now attracted to the natural resources of Brazil, and the probability that American capital will be, in the near future, largely invested there, will make an up-to-date account specially useful at this time. I. Historical and General. Soon after the Jesuits founded what is to-day the city of S?o Paulo, gold was discovered in the streams of the neighborhood; and this incited the natives, known as paulistas, to look for it farther afield. After many expeditions into the interior, gold was found in quantity in placer-deposits in the vicinity of Ouro Preto, in 1699, by a prospecting party headed by Antonio Dias. The name of Ouro Preto (black gold) was given because of the superficial dark coating of the gold, and the inhabitants of the district were known as mineiros (miners). Later on, the placers of Cuiaba, in the State of Matto Grosso, were discovered in 1718, and those of the State of Goyaz in 1724. All this territory was at the time a private colony, but on account of its increasing importance it was taken over by the Crown, and in 1739 a royal governor was appointed, with his nominal capital in S?o Paulo, though for a number of years the real capital was Ouro Preto. In 1711 Ouro Preto was raised to the rank of a city, with the name of Villa Rica de Ouro Preto (" rich city of black gold"); and in 1720, by reason of administrative difficulties, Minas Geraes was constituted a separate colony from S?o Paulo, with Villa Rica as its capital. The implantation of B+ , P+, and As&apos; into silicon has been studied with the purpose of making shallow p-n junctions. The influence of such parameters as 1) ion energy, 2) target orientation and temperature, 3) total dose, and 4) annealing schedule was investigated. An energy range of 70 to 300 kev was used for boron and phosphorus implants and up to 500 kev for arsenic. It is found that the experimental projected range agrees well with theory and that shallow junction depths can be made reproducibly. ION implantation has received much attention recently as a technique for doping semiconductors. Specifically, it has the potential of supplementing or replacing the diffusion process as a method for making p-n junctions. In a few specific cases it has been used successfully to make semiconductor junction devices. Potential advantages of ion implantation doping over diffusion techniques are: 1) It affords greater control of shallow junction depths (< 0.2 µ) while maintaining high peak concentrations. This is particularly important for high-speed switching devices, since lower junction capacitances and resistances can be achieved. 2) More precise registration of small planar structures can be realized if proper masking procedures are employed. This advantage is especially useful in the design of high-density integrated circuits. It has been used to advantage in FET fabrication since the edge of the source or drain can be aligned precisely at the edge of the gate electrode.&apos; 3) Ion implanatation permits lower temperatures than diffusion techniques. This factor alleviates the problem of compatibility of diffusivities often encountered when designing multiple-junction structures. Also, the lower temperatures create fewer thermal defects and dislocations, which may account for the high efficiency of some ion-implanted solar cells.2 4) Impurity profiles can be more easily tailored to resemble ideal distributions. Successful exploitation of the potential advantages of ion implantation techniques will depend on increased knowledge and understanding of the subject. The factors likely to be influential in determining impurity distribution profiles in ion-implanted single-crystal targets have been reviewed by J. F. Gibbons.3 In addition to the mass and energy of the implanted ion, the total dose, target orientation, and target temperature are important parameters. The annealing temperature required for removing lattice damage and incorporating the implanted species on an electrically active site is very important. This paper describes an investigation of some of these factors. Implants of boron, phosphorus, and arsenic into silicon have been studied. Energy ranges of 50 to 300 kev were used for boron and phosphorus and up to 500 kev for arsenic. In addition to the implantation energy, the effects of total dose, target temperature, and post implant anneal have been investigated. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The implantation targets were silicon wafers cut from Czochralski-grown crystals, lapped, and chemically polished. The orientations were (111), (110). and (100) with misorientations of up to 7 deg from the principal axis. For this study, accurate target alignment (i.e., within 0.1 deg) was not available and quoted misorientation values should be regarded as approximate . The implantation equipment consisted of an ion source, a 300-kev linear accelerator tube, an electromagnetic separator, and the associated target supporting and beam focusing assemblies. The ion source was a simple oscillating electron type source,4 which has been described elsewhere.5 The gaseous compounds BF3, PF5, and AsH3 were used as ion sources for B+, P+, As+, and AS+&apos;. Analyzed current levels of up to 20 pamp could be obtained; however, for this investigation target current levels of 1-3 µ amp were usually employed. The analyzed ion beam was collimated through a double slit (1.4 x 0.4 cm) and swept perpendicularly to the long axis of the slit such that an area of about 2 sq cm on each target was covered. Dosages of around 1015 cm-2 were normally employed, but smaller amounts were also used for comparison. A uniform flux density over the bombarded area was assured by the continuous use of profile monitors similar to those described by Wegner and Feigenbaum.6 Post-implant annealing was accomplished in an argon atmosphere in a temperature range of 600" to 950°C. It was not part of the purpose of this investigation to study the annealing kinetics; however, some isochronal and isothermal anneal experiments were conducted to determine the time and temperature necessary to render a reasonably high portion of the implanted ions electrically active (i.e., higher than 50 pct). Post-implant anneal temperatures of around 900° and 600°C were required for boron, and arsenic and phosphorus implants, respectively. Arsenic and phosphorus implants increased in conductivity rather abruptly at the proper anneal temperature of the isochronal curve, but boron increased more gradually over a wider range. Isothermal anneal curves were reasonably flat after 10 min, so an anneal time of 1/2 hr was used for the experimental results described below. The profiling techniques were: 1) neutron activation analysis, 2) differential sheet resistance,7 and 3) junction staining.8 The differential sheet resistance technique is commonly employed in this type of study. In 1960, the Kennecott Copper Corp. and the U.S. Bureau of Mines entered into a joint research program to determine the changes in stress, strain, and displacement created by changes in slope angles. The field site was the Kimbley Pit, located near Ely, Nev. The supporting laboratory investigations were made at the Bureau&apos;s Denver Mining Research Center. Following a study to determine the rock stresses in the mining district, the strike and dip of geologic defects (fractures) in the rock, and the laboratory-determined strength of the rock, a new slope angle and pit configuration was selected, and instruments were installed to measure changes in stress, strain, displacement, microseismic noise rate, and sonic velocities at several points in the west wall of the pit. Between February and November 1966, the west slope was changed from an average angle of 45&apos; to a slope angle that started at 45° on the south wall, and gradually increased to 575&apos; at the center of the west wall, and to 61° on the north wall. The pit was deepened from about 500 ft to about 550 ft. About 2.55 million tons of waste and ore were removed by stripping and mining. Measurements made between November 1965 and September 1967 showed that the pit wall was stable before excavation began, that changes in the measured quantities occurred in the pit wall during the excavation, and that the wall returned to a condition of equilibrium after the mining was completed. The need for a method and the technology to pre-design a pit slope does not require elaboration. About 5 billion tons of material are excavated yearly by surface mining methods in the United States, and the economics, safety, and availability of lower grade metals, nonmetals and fuels could all be substantially improved if operators could preselect optimum slope angles. The Hallimond tube flotation of sphalerite and pyrite with sulfhydryl collectors has been found to be inhibited near neutral pH in the presence of copper salts. Alkalimetric titration studies of the reactions between collector and activator indicate that this effect is apparently related to the formation of basic copper collector complexes. The conditions of formation of these compounds and their stability are in good agreement with the depression observed in flotation experiments. The general procedure employed in the flotation of zinc sulfide minerals requires activation of the mineral surface by heavy metal ions, usually copper, which react more easily than zinc with the common short-chain ionic sulfhydryl collectors.&apos; Commercially, zinc flotation is carried out under alkaline conditions (pH 7 to 10.5), but small-scale experiments indicate that zinc sulfide minerals can also be activated and collected under acid conditions. Selectivity, however, becomes poor at low pH and undesirable materials such as pyrite, silicates and carbonates tend to report in the float. Several years ago, Wark and Sutherland~, measured the contact angles of air bubbles on copper-activated sphalerite immersed in various sulfhydryl collector solutions. THE White Knob copper-deposits are situated about three miles south of Mackay, on the Salmon River .branch of the Oregon Short Line Railroad, in Custer county, Idaho. An outline-map of this district is given in Fig. 1. The deposits have been known and spasmodically worked for many years, and a total of over 3.5 miles of tunnels, shafts and other workings has been driven with a view to their development. These extensive excavations have exposed the deposits sufficiently to permit a careful geological examination. The peculiar features which give special interest to this paper are the branching, free-like form of the ore-bodies; the absence of zones of secondary enrichment in the partly oxidized pyritic deposits, and the fact that while the deposits are associated in a general way with the contact of an eruptive rock with limestone, which it penetrates, the garnetization has taken place not in the limestone, as is the usual case, but in the igneous

Since 1923, which closed the speculative era in the bituminous coal fields of the United States, there have been wide annual fluctuations in the national production of bituminous coal. These changes in annual output have been variously attributed to: (1) increased competition from petroleum products, natural gas and hydroelectric power; (2) lower unit consumption of coal; and (3) fluctuations in the general business level. The purpose of this paper is to measure, from a practical standpoint, the net effect upon the annual trend of bituminous coal production, and to give those who are interested a basis for estimating in advance the probable output of bituminous coal. It can readily be shown that changes in the level of general business affect the national production of bituminous coal more than does any other factor. Therefore it is necessary to use some standard measure of the relative business level for purposes of comparison. The Federal Reserve Board Index of Industrial Production offers the basis for such a measure.l This Index, a weighted composite of 81 different series, rests upon the averages of the years 1935 to 1939 as 100, and is presented graphically in Fig. I. Even a cursory examination of the chart will indicate a definite uptrend for industrial production over a period of years. This uptrend is due to at least two factors: (I) an actual increase in national population, and (2) a probable increase in the per capita consumption of goods. This means that there is no such thing as a fixed Normal, rather Normal is a variable, tending to increase from year to year. In order to measure the amount of annual increase in normal, the Index of Industrial Production must be studied in relation to its major components, Durable Goods and Nondurable Goods, Durable Goods are those made from the lasting materials such as iron, steel, other metals, lumber, stone, cement, clay, glass. Nondurable Goods are those for early consumption, such as foods, textiles, tobacco, chemicals, paper, gasoline, and goods made of leather and rubber. The purchase of Durable Goods may be postponed, but Nondurable Goods must be purchased currently unless the standard of living is lowered. The Federal Reserve Indexes of durable and nondurable goods are shown graphically, 1920 to 1939, on Fig. a (pp. 764-765 of ref. I). It is apparent that fluctuations in the production of nondurable goods are not nearly so wide as in the production of durable goods, and that the curve of Industrial Production (Fig. I) would fall between the two curves on Fig. 2. The relative partial molar enthalpies of gold and tin in liquid Au-Sn alloys have been measured from Xsn = 0.474 to 0.510 at 696°K, slightly above the melting point of solid AuSn. Within an average precision of 6 cal per g-atom, the data are represented by two smooth curves, which satisfy the Gibbs-Duhem relationship and which do not show any anomalous behavior in the range of composition studied. The results give no support to the hypothesis that atomic associations in the equiatomic liquid alloy resemble those in solid AuSu. LITTLE has been firmly established as to the nature of atomic distribution in liquid metallic phases. A favored hypothesis assumes the existence of atomic groupings in the liquid phase which are similar to those in solid phases occurring at lower temperatures. Beginning with this hypothesis, it is often possible to adjust the values of certain parameters (such as degree of association) so that approximate agreement is achieved with certain features of the X-ray diffraction pattern of the liquid, even though many other possible structures might satisfy the data equally well. Thus, in this manner, the structure of liquid tin has been described as a dispersion of fragments of gray tin in a matrix of metallic tin.1 Four X-ray diffraction studies2"5 have been made of the liquid alloy of composition AuSn at temperatures slightly above the melting point of the solid. Each investigator concluded, on somewhat different grounds, that the liquid consisted to a large extent of arrays of atoms similar to the solid, with admixture of more disordered arrays. Solid AuSn has the nickel arsenide crystal structure: each tin atom has six nearest neighbors, all gold atoms; and each gold atom has six tin and two gold atoms as nearest neighbors. It remains highly ordered to the melting point. The liquid alloy has a large exothermic (?H700° K = -2700 cal per g-atom6) enthalpy of formation, favoring ordering and making the hypothetical molecular association not unreasonable. The possible existence of such solidlike arrays, or of a high degree of order that occurs preferentially at a specific composition in a liquid alloy, might also be revealed by thermodynamic behavior somewhat analogous to that in highly ordered solid alloy phases. The latter often exist over wide composition ranges, within which the highest degree of order occurs at the ideal composition for which the atomic fractions are equal to the fractions of sites which are "right" for each kind of atom. On departing from the ideal composition, the excess atoms occupy "wrong" positions, raising the internal energy and making it progressively easier for additional atoms to occupy "wrong" positions. Thus, on either side of the ideal composition, there should be a pronounced rise in the entropy and enthalpy, which would be shown particularly by the change in the relative partial molar enthalpies, ?Hi, since they depend strongly on d?H/dx. In the one case where accurate measurements have been made, the solid AuCu ordered phase, the structure becomes much less ordered as the composition deviates from the ideal, and relative partial molar enthalpies change sharply as shown by the data6 given in Table I. This suggests the possibility of finding similar pronounced changes in the relative partial molar enthalpies of gold and tin in liquid alloys near the composition AuSn if the postulated solidlike ar-
