I. The Property. The Homestake Mining Co. has acquired through consolida tion the ground and equipment of the Father De Smet Con solidated Gold-Mining Co., the Deadwood-Terra Mining Go., the Caledonia Gold-Mining Co. and the Highland Mining Co., at and near Lead, Lawrence county, South Dakota, in the northern portion of the Black Hills. The company owns or controls 250 claims, comprising 2,616 acres and covering about 8,000 ft. along the strike of the lode. At the surface there are several veins, of which three have united in depth, where the main vein ranges from 300 to 500 ft. in width. The 1,100-ft. level is the lowest at present. The rock of both walls is, so far as known at present, carboniferous alate, and the country is penetrated by a system of porphyry dikes, and in some places capped with porphyry. The output of the company up to January, 1903, has been, approximately, $70,000,000. II. The Ore. The oxidized, open-cut ore is nearly all treated in the three mills on the northern part of the property, which are as follows : The Mineral Point (formerly the De Smet), of 100 stamps, the Monroe (formerly Caledonia), of 100 stamps, and the Pocahon tas (formerly the Deadwood-Terra), of 160 stamps. A cyanide plant, to treat the leachable portion of the tailings from these North End mills, has recently been installed and put into oper ation at Gayville, or Blacktail as it is now known. The Homestake lower-level ore, which comprises the greater part of that being milled at Lead, may be described as a horn blende, garnetiferous schist or slate, which has been crushed and infiltrated with free silica and pyrites, the latter being

This description of the organization of the Consolidation Coal CO. is intended to include only the portion that is charged with the responsibility of the actual operation of an individual mine, although it has seemed advisable to include several of the all-division personnel, who necessarily come in direct contact with the mine officials. The Consolidation Coal Co. has a staff and line organization and, while most of the contact between these two wings is made between officers ranking above those discussed in this paper, field representatives of several of the staff departments play such an important role in the control of certain phases of activity at the mines that a true picture of the mine organization cannot be had unless these men are included. The demands made upon the producer of large quantities of coal have certainly never been so exacting as they are today. Reductions in the number of accidents and in the cost of individual accidents has passed from the category of a desirable achievement to an unqualified necessity. Although the market price of coal today is lower than it has been in many years, consumers have never been so critical of quality. This market condition is especially severe on the producer to whom one bad shipment may mean the loss of a contract. And the battle to keep the reduction of production costs abreast with constantly dropping prices wages incessantly. For the legitimate producer this situation demands a mine-operating organization that is comprehensive, versatile, efficient and economical; and it is in an attempt to meet these conditions that our present system has been designed. To say that this line-up is incapable of being improved or that it is applicable to all conditions would be to assume a degree of presumption which certainly is not intended here, but our system does meet the conditions which we are called upon to face today with a smoothness and thoroughness which we consider reasonably satisfactory. An idea of what is meant by "Ultrafine Minerals Or Slimes" as used in the title can be had by an examination of Fig. I. Particle size distributions are presented for a crude kaolin clay, a coarse fraction and a fine fraction. The crude kaolin as mined was blunged with water, degritted through a 325-mesh Tyler screen, and dispersed with sodium silicate. The dispersed crude was then centrifuged in the laboratory into the coarse and fine fractions shown in the figure. The distribution curves were obtained by the well known sedimentation technique of Casagrande' using a long arm centrifuge to obtain equivalent spherical diameters down to 0.2 microns on the finer fraction. Fig. 1 shows the coarse fraction kaolin to be 50% finer than 3 microns, while the crude kaolin is 50% finer than 1.4 microns, and the fine fraction 50% finer than 0.6 microns. For comparison 53 microns on the horizontal scale would represent Stokesian diameters which would just pass a 325- mesh Tyler screen, taking into consideration the Andreasen sieve correction factor of 1.22 X the screen opening.' Another helpful comparison is the surface areas, which in square meters per gram, are 0.044 for 53 micron particles, 0.77 for 3 microns, 1.65 for 1.4 microns, and 5.0 for 0.46 micron particles. The object of this investigation was to determine with a vertical magnetic variometer the extent of the titaniferous ore deposit that occurs not far from Ivry in Terrebonne County, Quebec, about 70 miles north of Montreal. The Ivry mine, on lots 37 and 38 of range V, Beres-ford township, Quebec, is one of the largest and most accessible to transportation of the deposits of ilmenite in Quebec. The ore consists of an aggregate of ilmenite anhedra serving as host for numerous fine plaques of hematite. No magnetite is known from any occurrence near this lot, and in this way the deposit differs from many others that contain a large percentage of magnetite with the ilmenite. The deposit at Ivry thus has much lower magnetic susceptibility than those containing abundant magnetite, and a sensitive magnetometer was necessary for the work, although a body of magnetite with ilmenite about a mile from the Ivry mine was successfully prospected with a dip needle. The principal orebody is exposed in a quarry known as the Ivry mine, from which about 16,000 tons of ore have been shipped. Small exposures of ilmenite isolated by drift serve to show the presence at the surface of some of the bodies indicated by the magnetometer, but most of the hill is covered with glacial till and second growth hardwood. At the lower levels the till gives place to fluvioglacial sands and gravels from which the forest has been cleared. The increasing thickness of the sand and gravel as the hill descends makes the tracing outward of the deposits from the rocky knob of anorthosite a difficult matter. Within the orebodies too, some masses of anorthosite persist, which may account for some local irregularities. Fig. 1 is a photomicrograph, taken by reflected light, of a typical specimen of the ore. The dark patches are hematite and the light parts are ilmenite No trace of magnetite was found. Pig. 2 is a photomicrograph of a thin section of the country rock showing the texture of the anorthosite. The mean of four analyses quoted by Robinson1 is: titaninm, 19.26 per cent; iron 45.41 per cent. Electric Research Laboratory)— The author is to be commended on his attempt to calculate the residual strain energy from information on the dislocation density within the subgrains and a surface energy associated with the subgrains. However, much closer agreement between a calculated critical size of a nucleus and the observed size of grains that did not continue growing can be obtained if a reasonable correction is made in obtaining the energy of the surfaces of the subgrains. For example, since the sample is a single crystal with a cold-rolling reduction of 70 pct in thickness, one needs either an average disorientation for this or an average subgrain boundary energy rather than the 2.5 deg disorientation of a bent crystal, which was used by the author. The Crestmore Mine of the American Cement Company lies at the eastern end of the Jurupa Mountains, 50 miles east of Los Angeles. Originally, a quarry was opened in 1908 for "limestone" used in the manufacture of cement. The mining operations eventually went underground employing first a modified system of block caving and later the "room and pillar" scheme. The limestones are relatively small roof pendants preserved in an enveloping and intrusive quartz diorite. They occur as two irregular lenticular bodies roughly parallel at the top and tending towards convergence at depth. Their dip varies between 25 and 30 degrees E. The presently mined lower bed, Chino limestone, is typically composed of alternating bands a few inches to a few feet thick of medium to coarsely granular white crystalline limestone and somewhat yellowish limestone (brucite marble). A "room and pillar" scheme of mining is currently employed in the lower body of the Crestmore Mine. The levels are horizontal and access is provided by a spiraling road starting in the old quarry. The present depth of operations is an average 750 ft below the surface. Fig. 1 gives a three-dimensional general sketch of the mine. The long axis of the rooms is in an E-W direction, normal to the strike of the beds. Fig. 2 is a horizontal map of the 130 level, the deepest level mined presently. It is in this level that most of the in-situ investigations have been conducted. The present investigation was made possible by a non-restrictive grant of the American Cement Company to the University of California. MARCEL R. DALY (written discussion+).-I have read with great interest Mr. W . Van Der Gracht's discussion of my paper and I fail to see where his theory contradicts mine on any fundamental point. My contention is that petroliferous accumulations are generally coincident with diastrophic deformations, synchronous with them and essentially a result of them. This implies that the causes which have led to the distortion of the strata, whatever these causes may be (thrusts, torsion, etc.), have also led to the concentration and accumulation of the hydrocarbons existing in the strata at that time. It is in this respect that both set of phenomena may be said to be related in space and in time and that we may speak of an identity of causes. It is evident that no concentration of the hydrocarbons could take place where these hydrocarbons would not exist. But whenever they do so exist, deformation will tend to concentrate them; and whenever they are found to be concentrated (or accumulated) the cause of their accumulation will have to be traced directly to distortion. I have tried to show, in some previous papers,' the probable sequence of such a mechanical process in the simple case of a series of parallel, superposed, horizontal and homogeneous layers, individually uniform in thickness, but variable in composition and resistance; and I have pointed out that the general results so obtained would harmonize with some striking features recognized in the field. But I have also stated that conditions being much more complicated in nature than in the theoretical instance considered above, a complex superposition of effects would. have to be expected as a general rule, though the leading principle would remain the same. Mr. Van der Gracht admits that the motion of the primary oil, when it has been formed, and its accumulation in adequately porous containers, if any, that would be mostly found on the front edge of the original geosynclines, would be due to the action of the mountain-building forces. Our agreement on this point seems to be complete. But Mr. Van der Gracht wants also the formation of the bituminous matter in its primary form to be coincident only with the earliest phase of the uplift, viz., after the slow geanticlinal upheaval has been completed, and the accumulation

THE peak of production from the Appalachian natural gas field was apparently reached about 10 years ago, and the annual production from Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio has now dropped to about two-thirds of the amounts obtained in 1916 and 1917. This .falling off in production has occurred in spite of vigorous efforts and large expenditures by producing companies to maintain or increase their output. The greatly increased costs of development and handling are reflected in the present average value of natural gas at the point of consumption, which value in the three states referred to, has more than doubled in the past 10 years. While it is true that the natural gas production of the United States has increased during recent years, this increase has come from southwestern states, particularly from Oklahoma, California, Louisiana and Texas, which states are now leaders in the production of this valuable but fleeting resource. Pennsylvania, originally the leading state in natural gas production, occupies sixth place in the latest (1924) U. S. Bureau of Mines statistics. West Virginia, which held first place for 15 years, has dropped to third rank, and Ohio is the seventh state in the order of natural gas production. Domestic and industrial demands for gas are constantly increasing everywhere in the United States. These growing demands have accentuated the difficulties in the localities with depleted natural gas supplies, and serious shortages have already occurred during winter months in the Pittsburgh district. Some relief has been obtained by placing restrictions on the industrial use of natural gas, and by increasing the price (which tends to reduce consumption). Yet these are but temporary expedients for checking gas consumption, which fail to solve the problem of adequate future supplies of gas.

THE year 1924 was particularly notable in the petroleum industry of California as it was a period in which extensive town-lot drilling, with attendant overproduction and allied problems, virtually ceased and the industry returned to a nearly normal condition. Nearly all major field operations were conducted by large operating and marketing companies; in contrast to 1922 and 1923 field operations, when small promotion companies set the pace and forced the large companies to follow. The outstanding features of petroleum development were: 1. The three major fields of 1923, namely Huntington Beach, Long Beach, and Santa Fe Springs, declined from a production of 13,042,939 bbl., in January, to 6,764,417 bbl., in December, a drop of nearly 52 per cent: During this period, Huntington Beach declined 35 per cent., Long Beach 42 per cent., and Santa Fe Springs 63 per cent. 2. Methods of pumping deep wells were improved in some particulars; this contributed toward sustaining the productions of these three famous fields above what was predicted. 3. Of the fields producing previous to 1924, only three increased in production to any appreciable degree, during the year, as the result of bringing in new wells. These fields are Dominguez, Torrance, and Wheeler Ridge. Dominguez, discovered in September, 1923, produced 56,851 bbl. in January and increased regularly to a production of 1,641,042 bbl. in December. Torrance increased from a production of 972,261 bbl. in January, to 1,783,670 bbl., in May, and then declined to 1,393,215 bbl. in December. Wheeler Ridge, discovered in January, 1923, produced 23,254 bbl., in January, 1924, increased to a high of 33,678 bbl., in September, and declined to 27,430 bbl. in December. 4. Nearly all the production that had been shut-in during 1923 was opened in 1924, except some wells chiefly in Coalinga, Fullerton, and Santa Maria districts. The opening up of this shut-in production, combined with the increased productions from Dominguez and Torrance, were the chief factors that held the rate of decline for the state to a gentle slope.

With the exception of the United States and Russia, none of the leading world powers have within their boundaries the oil supplies needed to meet present peace-time requirements, and even in regard to the United States it is admitted by competent observers that the known oil reserves within the country are inadequate to meet demands for more than a comparatively few years. It follows, therefore, that the transportation of petroleum—almost entirely by tank steamers—from foreign fields to the main consuming centers is one of the most important factors affecting the present and future development of the oil industry. The world-wide distribution of petroleum is affected by numerous factors of which international politics is not the least important. The assurance of an ample supply of petroleum—one of the most essential munitions of war—is of paramount importance particularly to those countries subjected to the rivalries of powerful neighbors. And paralleling the importance of the control of an ample supply is that of its safe transportation from the fields to the consuming centers. To illustrate: France is dependent almost entirely on foreign sources for its petroleum requirements estimated at close to 100,000 bbl. daily, and in order to control such a supply after the World War it acquired an interest in the Iraq oil fields. Lately it has undertaken the construction of a pipe line from these fields to the Mediterranean seaboard in Syria with the expectation that late in 1934 these fields will supply between 30 and 40 per cent of the country's requirements. It should be noted, however, that the availability of this supply is entirely dependent on the safe operation in the Mediterranean at all times of an adequate fleet of tank steamers. Thus, in order to transport 40,000 bbl. daily, it will be necessary for one 10,000-ton tanker to leave Tripoli, the Syrian port, say for Marseille, every other day throughout the year while to meet the entire present peace requirements of France from the Iraq fields, a fleet of some 30 such tankers must be kept in continuous operation between Tripoli and Marseille.

Research is defined, scientifically, as a "systematic investigation of some phenomenon, and also a search for hidden treasures." Chemists tell us that the hidden treasures of petroleum are far richer than the products which have been best known to us. However, these secrets will be discovered only through intensive and systematic, as well as scientific, industrial research. Indeed, the scope of the subject is so great that such an intensive research program should be assumed by a centralized organization supported by the petroleum industry as a whole. Such organization should assume the responsibilities for investigation of new products and development of markets for such products. Gasoline, the chief product of the petroleum industry has become a cheap commodity. The continual uncontrolled overproduction of crude petroleum, the intensive competitive condition in the marketing of petroleum products and the increase of refining efficiency and installing of cracking facilities, have all combined to lower the market value of gasoline. The purchaser has profited from the lower cost of gasoline by way of lower prices so that today the most important product can scarcely be manufactured at a profit. In other fields, manufacturing industries have diversified their products when faced by a similar situation. Thus, they have been able to widen their marketing outlook. Why cannot the petroleum industry employ the same tactics? Right now we are hearing much discussion concerning the development of a wider market for existing petroleum products and new products for existing or prospective markets. For instance, we can cite recent developments for use of propane, butane and ethylene. Butane has been found to be an efficient and inexpensive refrigerant, especially adapted to home refrigerating systems. Propane and butane fractions of natural gasoline may be shipped under pressure and may be used as a substitute for, acetylene in cutting torches in connection with oxygen. There is a possibility of substituting butane for gas oil in the carburation of coal gas, as we know that butane contains practically the gas enrichment as the same volume of gas oil and should prove to be a superior product for

The study of anisotropy in metals has been greatly stimulated in recent years by the rapid development of X-ray methods for determining the crystallographic relationships of wrought and annealed materials. Prior to this time the knowledge regarding the directional properties of commercial alloys consisted almost exclusively of observations of a practical nature made during the fabrication of metal objects, supplemented by a limited number of mechanical tests on specimens cut at various angles to the direction of working. Such observations clearly indicate that the common methods of cold-working metals cause both a crystallographic and a mechanical fibering varying in character and degree according to the nature and extent of the deforming process. Even after annealing, following certain not too well known combinations of reductions and anneals, a preferred orientation may exist,, thereby constituting a residual fiber effect sufficiently pronounced to manifest directional properties. With the application of the X-ray the experimental horizon was extended chiefly because the study of anisotropic metals promised to offer direct and quantitative evidence regarding the involved mechanism of fragmentation and plastic flow. As a natural consequence the intensive studies in this direction have yielded a vast accumulation of data of ultimate potential value. Unfortunately, however, as is commonly the case in entering a virgin field of experimentation, many of the data cannot be molded into complete and coherent form because of the many unrelated conditions of the experimental projects. Again, the results of the study of single crystals have been rather naturally but at times indiscriminately applied to poly crystalline metals. Furthermore, sweeping statements have been made regarding the behavior during working and annealing of metals and alloys, entirely on the basis of similarity in lattice arrangement. There is abundant reason for believing that relatively small concentration variables, differences in magnitude and distribution of applied stresses, and the character of associated annealing treatments may in some cases greatly influence the mechanics of flow

Experimental data 1,2 on the energy dissipation in polycrystalline materials over a large frequency spectrum (10-2 cps to 106 cps) suggests that the quality factor [(e= Q )] is independent of the frequency providing both fluid-saturated and ferromagnetic materials are excluded from the test data. Additional data 3 suggest that the quality factors are less at high pressures than at low pressure, i.e., Q increases as the pressure increases. Observations on the dissipation of single quartz crystals with their polycrystalline counterparts indicate that the energy dissipation is less for the single crystal than for the aggregate .2 Both of the above observations, particularly the latter, are indicative of the fact that the dissipation increases with increasing surface contact within the polycrystal, i.e., a frictional attenuation scheme may be operative. Knopoff and MacDonald 4 have shown that a friction model gives rise to a quality factor frequency independence property. A partial listing of some values of Q, observed for both metals and non-metals, is given in Tables I, II, and III. In Tables I and II, the data all show Qs>Qp, i.e., the energy loss per cycle for compressional body waves is greater than that for shear waves of the same frequency. Most samples in Table III show the same effect. It is objective of this paper to suggest: (1) a frictional attenuation scheme may account for the observed losses incurred during the propagation of low amplitude stress waves in dry brittle rock and, in particular, that such a scheme can account for the observed relative magnitudes of the quality factors for P and S wave motion; (2) a friction scheme can readily explain the difference between the dynamic and static moduli in dry brittle rock; (3) a friction scheme, while in itself an intrinsically

SILVER the whitest of all metals, has been used for thousands of years. Students of antiquity agree that silver, gold, copper, and their alloys were the first metals discovered by man and they have all played an important part throughout the advance of civilization. Native silver has been found in different parts of the world in varying form and size, such as clusters of fine wires in rock cavities, thin sheets along cleavage planes in veins of rocks, and pieces of irregular shape that vary in size from extremely small particles to masses weighing many pounds. Nearly pure silver is found in, the native state but the native metal is more likely to contain copper or gold. Some of the natural alloys closely approximate the compositions of synthetic alloys that are used in the arts at the present time. As these native silver alloys usually are malleable and ductile, it is evident that prehistoric man was provided by nature with metals that he could work, with the crude tools at his command, into simple ornaments or other articles. The relative scarcity of silver combined with its resistance to attack under ordinary atmospheric conditions have been important factors in determining the purposes for which man has used it. Its scarcity and indestructible character have made its possession particularly desirable, and from the earliest times its principal use has been as a measure of wealth and a medium of exchange. The comparatively high value of silver in relation to other commodities makes it possible to transport a large amount of wealth in small bulk, and silver has traveled back and forth over all parts of the world. Meramec Mining Co. has put into operation a crushing and conveying system on its newly established 2475-ft level, 200 ft below the lowest production. To develop this level without interrupting hoisting or mine haulage, a 15.8% decline was driven from the 2275-ft level. A 5-cu-yd LHD diesel loader and a diesel-powered drilling jumbo were put into operation midway down the decline, and were used to develop the remainder of the decline and the entire level. Development of the ore pass system to the crusher required the construction of Swedish-type dumps on the main haulage-ways of all production levels with a minimum disruption of ore haulage. Concrete was handled by both rail-mounted and rubber-tired vehicles. The system features four Swedish-type dumps with control chutes at the lower three dumps, a 42-in. gyratory crusher with attendant feeders, and an 1800-ft long roof suspended conveyor feeding two 5000-ton ore bins. The crushed ore from these bins is conveyed to the lower of the mine's two original loading stations for hoisting. The retention of the original dumping and ore pass system as an alternate route has given mine production a unique flexibility. Operation for 22 months has permitted evaluation of the system from a long-term standpoint.

Coal mining historically has been a. hazardous occupation but, in recent years, tremendous progress has been made in reducing accidental coal mine deaths and injuries. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the basic principles of accident prevention as they are related to coal mining. Accident prevention fundamentals are no different for coal mining than for any other type of work. The fundamentals apply to all industries. Construction workers may be struck by falling tools and materials, and miners may be struck by falling slate and coal. Sailors may be trapped by shipboard fires, and miners may be trapped by mine fires. Railroad brakemen may lose hands and fingers positioning couplers, and miners may lose hands and fingers positioning couplers. Many other examples could be cited, but the point is that accidents that happen in coal mines are basically similar to accidents that happen in other industries. Thus, the basic principles for preventing accidents apply in coal mining as they do in any other type of work. COAL MINE ACCIDENT EXPERIENCE The US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is the main source for accident experience data in coal mines. Coal mine operators are required, by law, to forward to MSHA monthly the number of fatal and disabling injuries, man-hours worked, and tons of coal mined. This information is compiled and published quarterly, with annual summaries, by MSHA. Trends in the number of fatalities and fatal injury rates are shown in Fig. 1. Major coal mine disasters, with number of miners killed, and dates of coal mine safety legislation are shown in Table 1. The fatal and disabling injury frequency rates for the coal industry are shown in Fig. 2.

All shall be equally entitled to the privileges of membership, excepting that no member of any class whom residence shall be outside of the United States of America, except those residing in Mexico and Canada, shall be entitled to vote. SEC. 2. Members: A person to be eligible for election or transfer into the claw of Member must be at least 27 years of age and must have had at least six years' employment in the practice of engineering, mining, geology, metallurgy, or chemistry, during at least three years of which he must have held positions of responsibility in one or more of these fields. This shall not apply to Rocky Mountain members.

A method using computer techniques is described for the comparative evaluation of truck performance over any given haul road using readily obtainable manufacturers' data. An additional computer program is utilized to calculate individual cycle times for each truck and shovel combination, fleet requirements for any desired production rate, and to estimate comparative costs. The introduction of a large number of variables into the program permits management to determine the critical system factors having the greatest bearing on costs. Thus, the method described can be used not only for analysis of needs for a new surface mine but for cost improvement in existing mines where changes in truck and shovel operations are contemplated. The systems analysis approach to the solution of problems in the mining industry is gaining in industry acceptance. This is a logical development in view of the fact that a mine constitutes one of the most dynamic systems of production. In contrast with a manufacturing plant, situated in a location selected through choice and utilizing a regulated source of quality controlled raw materials, the miner must go where the ore is and he is faced with ever changing physical conditions. He is subjected to the vagaries of nature, and he can never mine the same ore twice. What is systems engineering? There seems to be no concise and universally accepted definition of the term and its meaning is still fairly local. It deals largely with trade-offs of subsystem characteristics to achieve some desired result in an overall system. This concept of suboptimization can be explained by an example. If the objective of a mining company is to produce a certain quality ore at minimum cost, the optimum operation is not achieved by minimizing all costs, since all phases of mining are interrelated. Reduction of blasting costs might well increase loading, hauling, and crushing costs out of proportion to the resulting saving in explosives. Hence tradeoffs are necessary. It is evident then that an optimum system is achieved through a blending of suboptimal components which taken together yield the desired result. The object of this paper is to present a brief outline of the methods of geologic mapping employed in the Geological Department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., at Butte, and to show by means of a few typical examples the practical nature of the results obtained. The extremely complicated geological conditions early encountered in Butte mining led mine operators to realize the necessity of accurate detailed geologic mapping m an aid to successful development of the ore bodies. The organization of the Anaconda Geological Department was undertaken in 1900 by H. V. Winchell, who, in conjunction with D. W. Brunton, worked out the essential methods of procedure which are, in the main, followed at the present time. Since the year 1906 the geologic work has been under the direction of Reno H. Sales, and in some respects the scope of the work has been slightly enlarged. An excellent article describing the general equipment of the geological department was presented by D. W. Brunton at the British Columbia meeting of the Institute in 1905.' His idea, that data collected underground and recorded should be put to practical use and not remain a mere " inventory of the company's underground possessions," is the keynote to the success of applied geology in Butte. The geologic notes are taken as soon as possible after the ground is broken so that any mistake in the mining may be corrected at once, or any particularly advantageous procedure may be suggested before any useless work is done. Taking the notes underground is a comparatively simple matter, but a few necessary precautions may be pointed out. The essential to success is that the notes shall show exactly what geological facts are disclosed. The observer must discriminate carefully between important and unimportant exposures in making the record, especially as regards the relation between veins and stringers, between faults and minor slips, or between the characteristics of veins of different ages. (written discussion *).-Without doubt the excellent results obtained at Ajo will cause surprise among metallurgists; 75 per cent. average capacity and 80 per cent. extraction during the first year of operation of a plant using a new metallurgical process are figures that speak for themselves. It is obvious that the most troublesome feature of the process is the fouling of solutions. The effects of this are most evident in the electrolytic tank house; but apparently the solutions are so heavily loaded with salts that their dissolving power is also impaired. This is indicated by the fact that copper comes into solution during washing after the leaching of the ore is completed, as shown by the decreasing ratio of acid to copper in the various washes tabulated in Table 4, and also by the fact that 4.9 per cent. of the total copper in the ore remains in the tailings in a soluble form. Even though the extraction in leaching and the ampere efficiency in electrolysis would be benefited by keeping the salts in solution at a lower concentration, it is doubtful whether it would pay to decrease these salts by discarding more electrolyte without other changes in the, process, since this would increase the amount of cement copper produced, which is already very large. If, however, it would not disturb the process otherwise, this object could be accomplished by increasing the range of electrolysis, so that solution going to the tank house would contain, say, 4 per cent. copper and 1 per cent. acid, and the solution returned to the leaching plant 1 1/2 per cent. copper and 4.8 per cent. acid, and by increasing the volume of solution to be discarded, this to be taken from the electrolyzed solution returned to the leaching plant. By this arrangement, more salts will be removed from the system per ton of cement copper produced; and if sufficient solution is discarded to keep the iron content down to 1 1/2 per cent. it would he feasible to recover the copper from
