Experiments show that ores such as tungsten and tin, which slime excessively, can be deslimed and upgraded by ultrasonics. The method proposed depends primarily upon the stratifying and peptizing action caused when high frequency sound waves are propagated upward through ore pulp in a cylinder tube. Stratifying and peptizing are somewhat hindered by the accumulating action, which embodies additional effects of reflection and refraction.

At low sodium-oleate concentration, calcite flotation is substantially improved by the use of CO2 instead of air. Electrophoretic mobility measurements indicate that carbonation results in the accumulation o f positive charge on the calcite particles. This heightens adsorption of oleate anion, an effect confirmed by tracer-technique measurements. Fundamental insight is obtained as to how CO2 serves better as an activator than some mineral and organic acids, how oxalic acid acts as a depressor, and why the influence of Ca++ ions, liberated during carbonation, on flotation behavior of calcite is insignificant and sometimes adverse.

Briefly, can you relate how you got into the minerals industry and some of your experiences as an executive, engineer, and administrator? Also would you tell ME about your affiliation with the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME? Roseburg, Ore., was where I was born and raised. It was, and still is a lumbering town; it couldn't have been any farther from mining. Upon graduation from high school, I turned 18 and, having already signed up with the Army Corps of Engineers, I was in the service eight days after my birthday. Four months later I was in New Guinea. As an amphibious engineer, I saw many of the Pacific and Philippine Islands, and ended up in Japan just a few days after the war was over. In later years, my work took me back to several of the places I had been during the war.

The relation between man-hours of labor and production may be correlated for any industry, and already it has been widely used in piecework studies. It is not in general use as yet for recording labor efficiency of an enterprise or an industry. An exception to this is the Cement Institute, which tabulates the man-hours used in each operation and thus gets the total man-hours per barrel of cement. The writer knows of one steel company that keeps a complete record of man-hours for every operation from mining the ore to finishing the product. No doubt many others find the information useful, and such a study could be of value to the mineral industries.

Bethlehem Steel's Research Department is developing a set of computer programs as mine-planning tools for Bethlehem's coal mines. Several of these computer programs have been completed and have been in routine use by Bethlehem Mines personnel since early 1975. The production scheduling and ventilation planning programs have been installed on an interactive time-sharing computer. The use of time sharing allows mines in remote locations to access these planning tools through standard phone lines and low-cost computer terminals. The capabilities of the interactive production scheduling and ventilation planning programs are briefly described. The advantages of implementing them using time sharing are discussed. A case study illustrates some of the benefits that planning based on the use of these programs has already provided.

A population balance model accounting for the transient variations in drop size distributions in a stirred liquid-liquid system is analyzed for its effect on chemical reaction conversion in a stirred, batch reactor. The analysis is applied specifically for phase transfer catalytic reactions, which indicates that transient effects of evolution of drop size distributions may be important in such systems.

The current technology of large rock conveyors is reviewed. Based on this investigation two large rock conveyor concepts have been developed and a test facility investigation designed and fabricated. The USBM will test these concepts along with loading and transfer points for handling mine run rock material up to 1.5 m (4.9 ft) in size. An evaluation of open pit mining systems using large rock conveyors documents substantial cost savings when compared to truck haulage.

It is considered the great enemy of the steel manufacturer-, and the chief aim has been and is to keep it out by using pure crude material, or when once in, to eliminate it or counteract its effect. THE mining and removal of coal from two or more beds, either simultaneously or consecutively, in vertically adjacent areas have always been matters of concern to mine operators from both operating and recovery points of view. However, with the progressive introduction and use of electrical and mechanical facilities, such problems assume even greater proportions. In this paper typical cases occuring in Cambia County, Pa., are given and procedures whereby such problems may be greatly reduced, if not entirely eliminated, are suggested.

Preliminary research has identified several organic and aqueous solutions that are effective absorbents for SO, from simulated smelter gas containing 0.3 to 2% SO2. These SO2 loaded solutions are also compatible to the reaction of H2S and SO2 to precipitate a readily filtered elemental sulfur. The economic removal of SO2 and production of elemental sulfur from stack gases discharged by base- metal smelters is a challenging goal. The magnitude of this task is illustrated by the estimate that about 3.5 million tons of SO2 are discharged to the atmosphere by smelters annually in the U.S. The SO2 concentration of the gases ranges from about 0.5 to more than 3%. As the sulfur content of SO2 is 50% a potential production of 1,750,000 tons of sulfur per year is indicated.

The theory, construction and applications of oxygen sensors employing high-temperature electro- chemical cells with solid electrolytes are briefly reviewed. The application of disposable probes to measurement of the oxygen potential in matte and slag baths in tin, copper, and nickel smelting operations is described. Examples discussed include end-point determination in smelting and slag-cleaning operations, pilot-scale investigations of process chemistry to assist in the development of smelting strategies, and measurements in operating smelters to improve the efficiency of operation.

Finances Due to the growth of the activities of the United Engineering Society, it was found desirable early in the year to consolidate the various accounts and financial records of the Society and of the Library, heretofore kept separately, and to have all the data pertaining to the building and its operation in the charge of one individual. An assistant secretary especially assigned to this work has been appointed, and a separate office has been established. The Finance Committee has had all of the records brought fully to date and has prepared a new set of account books to meet the new conditions. LUTHER B. EAMES, Pueblo, Colo. (written discussion*).-In reading Mr. North's interesting paper, several points have been noted that appear to warrant discussion. With a feed all through 20 mesh, I feel inclined to question the use of steel balls as large as 2 in. in a tube mill. I have seen balls as small as-3/4 in. used for the dry grinding of cement clinker, and surely many more points of contact would result from smaller balls. This would seem to be desirable in a mill as short as 6 ft. The heavy load in the classifiers would also indicate a high proportion of returned pulp. I hope that some discussion by Mr. North -and others may develop this point. The flow sheet on page 1181 shows the solution returning from the dam valued at 40 c. per ton being added to the last decantation tank. Theoretically, this solution should not be added to that of a lower value. As I calculate it, if this solution were added to tank X the solution finally discharged from tank Z would be reduced in value by nearly 4 c. per ton.

The orebodies are long bedding-plane lenses of chalcopyrite and sphalerite, associated with garnetite masses. Most of the orebodies are within a 50-ft thickness of Cambrian limestone; other Paleozoic limestones and dolomites are locally metamorphosed but only slightly mineralized. Pre-mineral faults are numerous, but shallow folds were the main ore-localizing structures.

The domestic iron and steel industry is a vital and major segment of the US economy. Including its employees in coal mining, iron ore mining, limestone quarrying, and related transportation, the industry directly provides jobs for approximately 750,000 people, has a $10 billion annual payroll, and indirectly supports a substantial volume of employment for the entire country. Because of its size and visibility, if nothing else, the US iron and steel industry has always been an easy target of attack and has often been subjected to a great deal of political sound and fury. Today, the industry has different troubles and is fighting for survival: it is faced with spiralling costs, inadequate earnings, labor unrest, foreign competition, government over-regulation, an acute shortage of investment capital, and an all-time high debt burden.

•Mineral Development Corp. of Salt Lake City, Utah purchased the Somerset and Oliver coal mines from the Kaiser Steel Corp. The mines are located at Somerset, Colo., about 75 miles east of Grand Junction, Colo. Somerset Town, with housing for 600 persons was included in the transaction. The mines employ 115 miners and have a combined capacity of 1750 tons per day. The Minerals Development Corp. is headed by Claude P. Heiner and is controlled by Godfrey L. Cabot, Inc. of New York and Boston. The Cabot Company is a major producer of carbon black. • The Dept. of Interior has announced that the name of the Defense Minerals Administration will be changed to Defense Minerals Exploration Administration. The new name of this defense agency more nearly describes its duties, since the mineral programming, procurement and claimant functions of the former DMA have been transferred to the Defense Minerals Procurement Agency. C. O. Mittendorf, formerly acting administrator of DMA, is serving as acting administrator of the new DMEA.
