A chlorination process for treating metal sulfide flotation concentrates is described. The process involves low temperature chlorination combined with sulfur chloride conversion and selective oxidation to produce nonferrous metal chlorides, elemental sulfur, and ferric oxide in a three-stage fluidized bed reactor. The nonferrous metal chlorides may then be water leached, separated, purified, and electrolyzed to recover copper and nickel metals and to regenerate chlorine for recycling.

Measurements have been made of the rate of capture of single particles of strongly hydrophobic, surface-methylated, quartz, of sizes ranging from 12 to 40 µm diam., by single rising bubbles of diam. 0.5 to 1.1mm. The results agree closely with the theoretically calculated hydrodynamic collision rates, indicating that, in this system, every collision results in capture and retention of a particle.

What has been billed as the underground drilling technology of the 1980's got a dramatic head start when Boliden engineers at Stekenjokk decided to go with all hydraulic drilling for primary ore production and mine development. This application represents a major first in meeting the needs of high productivity, better energy utilization, and an improved drilling environment. At Stekenjokk, engineers chose three Atlas Copco Boomer H132 two-boom electro-hydraulic drill rigs with the COP 1038 rock drills. An additional single-boom Boomer H131 was also selected with the COP 1038 HD for roof bolting functions.

In the sections, Figures 1, 2, and 3, are shown three crucibles that have been applied to substantially the same furnace, all the conditions having been the same except a variation of one foot of bosh, and a slight variation in the angle of the same. The bosh of No. 3 was originally the same as No. 2, the additional foot in diameter being the result of three months' cutting. To meet the demands of the planned development of Turkish steel industry an Iron ore processing plant is under construction at Divrigi, Anatolia and is planned to be commissioned mid of 1978. The plant has been designed for an annual capacity of 4 million tons of crushed magnetitic ore. About 1.9 million tons of coarse concentrate of 25-2 mm size and 1.3 million tons of pellet feed concentrate will be produced by wet screening, dry magnetic concentration of coarse size fractions and wet magnetic concentration of fine size fraction. The fine magnetic concentrate will be reground and filtered to prepare the feed for the pelletizing plant.

The mineral olivine has been the subject of continued research by various authors. Paik1 conducted infrared and flotation studies of the adsorption of sodium alkyl benzene sulfonates on olivine. These studies are of interest from two points of view. First, in the metallurgical field it is of interest to understand the mechanism of silicate flotation using sulfonate collectors and second, hydrologists are interested in studying the chemical reactions that take place when water plus sulfonates encounter a porous silicate medium. On the basis of his study, Paik was able to postulate a possible mechanism for the attachment of RSO3- (sulfonate radical) to the olivine surface.

The old De Beers mine, which lies northwest of Dutoitspan mine at Kimberley, was the mine which launched Cecil Rhodes (In his historical career. It was the nucleus of the De Beers Mining Co. Ltd., formed in 1880, which later became De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd. Inactive for more than a half century, the De Beers Mine is being rejuvenated for a new era of operations. Both mines were on the Vooruitzicht farm owned by the De Beers brothers, who had bought it from the Orange Free State Government ten years previously for £50. Although the brothers sold it soon after the discovery of diamonds at Dutoitspan, they are remembered for having given their name to the foremost diamond mining company in the world. Diamonds worth nearly R180,000,000 have come from this ground, and more will be recovered when the mine is re-opened.

Bupyung Silver Mines daily treats average 14 tons of concentrates containing 9,000 g Ag per ton. Bupyung Silver Refinery uses Merrill Crowe process to recover the silver from the leach solution containing 1.0 g/l Ag; Series of experiments were carried out to recover the silver from the solution by means of direct electrowinning in place of Merrill Crowe process. The recovery of the silver was 99% when the cell voltage and the retention time were 1.9 v and 3.0 hours, respectively. Power consumption was 3.2 Kwh/kg of Ag. It was found that impurity buildup was not significant during the recycling. The direct operating cost for the electrowinning was evaluated to be $ 0.35/kg of Ag.
