In this paper, a numerical model for determining the stress and displacement fields around a crack of arbitrary geometry in a linear elastic medium is described. Accuracy and computational speed were the main considerations in selecting the numerical method and Propagation criteria used to model the growing crack. Some results regarding the stresses and displacements around a two-dimensional crack of arbitrary geometry are discussed.

The death, on May 6,1908, of Dr. Hermarnn Wedding, Privy Mining Councilor of the Kingdom of Prussia, and Professor of the Metallurgy of Iron and Steel at the Royal Mining Academy of Berlin, was a loss keenly felt by the whole metallurgical world. Not alone in his native land, but also in foreign countries, did he enjoy an esteem of which the title of honorary membership in the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the United States Association of Charcoal Iron-Workers, and the (British) Iron and Steel Institute bears eloquent testimony.

However, use of longwall systems during the past 10 years has increased much more slowly than was anticipated. During the lust half-dozen years, longwall mining has taken on a new look, much of which is due to the introduction of self-advancing roof supports from Europe. Here is a report on two longwall operations, one which started up in 1956, the other in 1962. It is a story of manually set, friction- type props us, the new European type; the story of an 18-ton per man-shift operation us one of 50 tons per man-shift.
