THE electrical specific resistance of rocks in the field is measured by sending a current through a medium of great volume, compared to the electrodes, whose resistivity should be measured. The whole resistance can be determined by the Wheatstone bridge and the specific resistance calculated by a well-known formula. The resistivity of some rocks in place in Germany and in Switzerland is given; first, of a rock near the surface, and especially near electrodes. Practical applications are made in the determination: (1) of the continuity of a conducting orebody; (2) of the surface area of an orebody; (3) in the detection of a water-bearing fault in a salt mine. Preliminary observations are described: (1) on the influence of the depth of ground-water table; (2) on the detection of gas under high pressure in coal seams. The observations in this paper of the electrical resistivity of rocks and soil in place are along the lines of the very interesting method and results of the Messrs. Gish, Rooney, Hotchkiss and Fisher.1,2 All the work described has been done since 1920.

GENTLEMEN : Herewith are transmitted the reports of your Treasurer and the Chairmen of your standing committees on Admissions, Membership, Papers and Publications, and Library for the calendar year 1931. To these reports you are referred for further details of the year's activities. Finances.-Depressed industrial conditions prevailing throughout the year were reflected in a substantial decline in current revenue. Aside from interest on sundry special funds (but including that from the Life Membership, Library, and General Reserve Funds) total receipts amounted to $168,274, compared with $194,636 in 1930. The principal items of decrease were $17,000 in advertising income from the monthly magazine MINING AND METALLURGY, and about $9,600 in dues and initiation fees. Of this shrinkage $4,000 is accounted for by decrease in the number of new members enrolled; and $5,600 by diminished income from current dues and arrearages. This naturally has coincided with an \ increase in delinquency and "drops" or suspensions for nonpayment of dues. The decline in advertising income, amounting to 38 per cent as compared with that of 1930, in general paralleled the experience of all technical and trade publications; and it is problematical whether 1932 will show as large a return from advertising as did 1931.

Production of many industrial minerals reached all-time records in 1965. In keeping with the high level of industrial activity throughout the nation, producers of many industrial minerals operated at capacity or near capacity, notably the producers of phosphate, potash and sulfur. In the case of sulfur, the demand exceeded production and orders were filled, in part, from stocks accumulated in previous years. Industrial minerals as a group continued to increase both in value and quantity at a faster percentage rate than metallic minerals and fuels, The U.S. Bureau of Mines estimated that the value of industrial minerals produced in 1963 was $4318 million vs. $2006 million for metals. Preliminary estimates for 1965 indicate that current value of production was again more than 2% times that of metals, thus making apparent their importance to the industrial life of the nation.

Rocks in mines, quarries, and many outcrops commonly show evidence of being under high stress. Saw cuts and drillholes close in, partly mined coal bursts violently, and pillars crush and rock spalls in mines even at moderate depths. Similarly, strong and massive rocks such as granite and sandstone naturally divide themselves into sheets that lie more or less parallel to their outward topographic form. The sheets may be either convex or concave. Thin plates of bare rock surfaces bow up and buckle. Such effects often cannot be explained by the obvious loads now acting on the rock, that is, by loads resulting from overburden, topographic irregularities, or stress concentration around openings. The stresses exceed those that would result from such loads. Two interpretations of such excess stresses have been made. In one, the stresses are assigned in origin to now active tectonic forces. In the other, they are regarded as leftover and locked in from some previous state at which higher pressures prevailed. These two sources may both operate and they generally cannot be distinguished easily in the field. There are other complicating sources of stress such as temperature gradients and chemical alteration. Nevertheless, some bodies of rock, by exfoliating, show evidence of high internal stress even though they are practically unweathered and so isolated topographically that the presence in them of significant stress due to exterior loads or active tectonic forces seems unlikely (Fig. 1). Moreover, completely isolated rocks are known to change density, shape, or size 1,2 to expand under constant compressive stress;3 and even to disintegrate 4,5 without the intervention of weathering processes. The stresses involved here must be truly residual in the sense long used by metallurgists; that is, residual stresses in a body are those that remain.

In these days of the almost exclusive use of byproduct coke as the blast-furnace fuel in this country, it may seem out of place, and smacking too much of reminiscing, to say anything about the use of anthracite coal for blast-furnace fuel. Viewed in the light of present day research and of developments in alloy steel, some observations seem appropriate regarding this raw material that played such an important part in the development of the iron and steel industry during 50 years of the past century. The research work of that period, in which the whole iron and steel industry was revolutionized, passing from wrought iron to steel and from charcoal to three new mineral fuels for blast furnaces, was done chiefly in the full-sized plants of that day; and it was done largely by the ironmasters themselves. The laboratory had not become a part of the ironworks, and scientific instruments were lacking around the blast furnaces; "rule o' thumb" and erroneous theories prevailed—and have not yet all been eliminated. The recent interest in meteoric iron in connection with nickel steels and other alloys proves that it is worth while to search for the reasons for excellence and the causes for failures in the metallurgy of bygone days. Turner1 gives the reasons why the blast furnace of Dr. F. W. Geissen-hainer on Silver Creek, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, about 10 miles northeast of Pottsville, was operated successfully with anthracite2 in August and September, 1836, and why several other attempts failed. It has taken a long time for us to find out that there are great differences in the behavior of anthracites from the several parts of the anthracite region, as well as differences in coking coals from the bituminous fields.

QUESTIONS raised during earlier investigations of the preferred orientation in titanium1 and zirco-nium sheet led to the examination of the rolling and annealing textures of beryllium and hafnium sheet. Since the c/a ratios are 1.568 and 1.584, less than that of ideal close packing, 1.633, it would be expected that the preferred orientations would be similar to those exhibited by zirconium and titanium. This was found to be true. However, in several regards the orientations observed for beryllium differed from those reported by Smigels-kas and Barrett4 and so are given here. The okientations for hafnium are presented since only the cold-rolling texture has been reported in the unclassified literature. The pole figures were determined by transmission using an X-ray spectrogoniometer with copper Ka radiation and the automatic pole-figure recorder designed by Geisler described previously.6 The intensity units in the pole figures in this case are only arbitrary since calibration against a random sample of the same material was not considered necessary for the original purpose of the examination. The beryllium sheet, cold-rolled from 0.036 in. to 0.006 in., a reduction of about 84 pct, exhibited a split texture with the [1010] direction in the rolling direction as shown in Fig. 1. The same specimen annealed in vacuo for 1 hr at 1000°C showed no change in orientation. These textures

Pure gold was deformed by wire drawing at room temperature and 78°K. After deformation at room temperature, the stored energy and the resistivity increment reached nearly constant levels at high strains, whereas the yield stress continued to increase with strain. After deformation at 78K, the stored energy, the reszstivity increment, and the yield stress were larger than after deformation at room temperature mzd increased continuously with strain. Annealing at THE stored energy and the changes in properties resulting from cold working of Au-Ag alloys by various processes have been the subject of a series of investigations in this laboratory.'-' The work reported here room temperature after deformation at 78°K did not affect the yield stress appreciably. The stored energy, resistivity increment, and Lncrease in yield stress after deformation at room te-lnperature can be explained primarily in lerrns of dislocations while point defects, as well as dislocations, contribute to the changes in these properties after deformalion at 78°K. extends this research to pure gold. The stored energy, the resistivity increment, and the tensile properties after deformation by wire drawing were measured as functions of the strain at room temperature and at 78°K. Vapor pressure determinations were made on synthesized germanium sulfides. Germanium and cadmium were removed from sphalerite concentrates by fuming. The fume was retreated to separate some of the cadmium from the germanium and, at the same time, upgrade the germanium to more than 5 pet content. MANY sphalerite concentrates contain certain impurities which have economic value as byproducts. These may include the volatile sulfides of germanium, cadmium, and lead. The North Texas district, as herein defined, includes the counties of Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Knox, Montague, Wichita, and Wilbarger. This area covers generally the crest and south flank of a system of buried mountains known as the Red River uplift. The oil and gas accumulations along this feature arc in traps, which, although localized by structures incident to the regional uplift, are usually modified by stratigraphic changes in the sediments. Excepting the fields in southeastern Baylor, southern Archer, and southwestern Clay counties, all the fields within the district are on this Red River uplift. These exceptions, which have the same type of oil and gas accumulation as the other fields, are on the extreme north end of the Bend arch, which is a broad anticline plunging northward from the Llano uplift in central Texas to Archer County. The larger part of past oil and gas production has come from Pennsylvanian strata, with less important amounts from the Permian, and minor but increasingly important quantities from the Ordovician. Developments during 1939 With the later stages of development being reached in the K.M.A. field during the first half of the year, some 400 fewer producing wells were drilled in North Texas in 1939 than in 1938, when some 1750 wells were drilled. Despite this decrease in activity, production in 1939 increased about 3½ million barrels over 1938 figures, and at the end of the year the oil reserves were somewhat larger than on the first of the year. As is usually characteristic of the district, this resulted from the discovery of a large number of relatively unimportant fields. Owing principally to no appreciable abatement in wildcat drilling, more new fields and extensions to old fields were discovered this year. Although none of these discoveries was of such magnitude as to be important to the oil industry, the new developments in Montague and Cooke Counties portend greater and probably more important operations in these areas.

The relation between the chemical composition and the refractoriness of fire-brick has long attracted the attention of manufacturers of fire-brick and others interested in their use, yet but little systematic work has been done along this line, especially in the United States. Analyses of fire-brick have been quoted for years, but fire-tests of brick, except those of durability in practical use, have usually been lacking. Although many tests and analyses of foreign fire-brick have been published, only a few have appeared in the United States; and even in the foreign literature, the references and facts are more or less scattered. The most elaborate foreign paper on the subject is that by Dr. Jochum.' One of the earliest, and perhaps the most detailed piece of work in the United States, is that of F. Platt, which was done for the Pennsylvania Geological Survey, in 1876.2 His investigation consisted of the analysis and heat-tests of 21 bricks, the testing being made in an experimental shaft-furnace at Har-risburg, Pa. All the bricks were more or less affected at the temperature reached, which was considerably higher than the melting-point of steel. The exact temperature at which individual bricks fused was not ascertained, hence the comparisons quoted in the paper are of value only for the bricks used in the test. The next comprehensive investigation, made by the New Jersey Geological Survey,³ deals chiefly with fire-clays; analyses and refractory tests having been made of 123 clays, kaolins, feldspars and fire-sands. POTENTIAL differences between strata of shale and sandstone have been recognized for about 15 years, and they form the basis of the electrical logging of oil wells. Hitherto these potentials have been ascribed solely to electrochemical reactions caused by the disturbing effects of the water in the drill hole through which they are generally measured. Observations by the author in wells empty of water and in a mine shaft suggest that potential differences between sandstones and shales are natural and specific properties of the rocks, although they are modified to measurement by the disturbing effects of the water in the drill hole. The cause of these potentials probably is to be sought in the relative polar adsorptive capacities of quartz and clay particles.

The present paper comprises two parts, which have but little con nection with each other. The first is practically a continuation of the investigation on the specific gravity of gold liberated by means of acids from its alloys, on which subject I had the honor of presenting a brief note to the Institute in 1893 (Trans., xxii., 117); the second describes a series of experiments on the behavior of amorphous gold under the action of heat. By the kindness of Prof. W. C. Roberts-Austen, C.B., F.R.S., chemist to the Royal Mint, I have been permitted to conduct these experiments in the mint assay-office, all the splendid resources of which institution were freely placed at my disposal. I desire at the outset to express my obligations to Prof. Roberts-Austen and to all the staff of the mint assay-office for their kind assistance at all stages of my experiments. I.—The Specific Gravity of Gold in Alloys. In the note already referred to, I published my discovery that the gold left on dissolving out the silver from an alloy of gold and silver (which I shall here term " residual amorphous gold ") has a higher specific gravity than ordinary molten gold. I also pointed out that I had worked on very small quantities of material and with balances and weights on the accuracy of which I could not implicitly rely, and that in so far my numerical data were inconclusive, although I had but little doubt of the correctness of the broad fact. The experiments now recorded were made under the most advantageous circumstances and with various refinements. Particularly, I found that the ordinary form of specific-gravity bottle was responsible for several small sources of error; and I accordingly designed an improved form (Journal of the Society of Chemical Industry, April 30,1894, vol. xiii., p. 322), which I used for this work. The effect of the height of a retaining-wall-supported berm on the slope stability of an idealized mine-tailings dam was investigated. The material in the dam was idealized as a two-layered system with the phreatic surface delineating the boundary between the layers. In each layer the tailings were assumed to be homogeneous and isotropic. The effect of variation in height of the berm was examined for tailings dams with three different, commonly occurring slopes. The stresses and displacements were obtained using the finite element method. An incremental analysis technique was employed to simulate sequential construction of both the tailings dam and the retaining-wall-supported berm. A one-dimensional element was used to represent all interfaces and discontinuities in the finite element model. Assuming a hyperbolic model, the nonlinear stress-strain relationship for the tailings was approximated using the method of successive increments. The stresses obtained in the finite element analyses were used in conventional slope stability analyses assuming circular failure surfaces. The results of the study show that the use of a retaining-wall-supported berm is an effective means of improving the stability of a tailings dam. This increased stability is greater for dams with steeper slopes. In addition, the increase in factor of safety is particularly notable for berm heights less than 25% of the height of the dam.

The occurrence of oil seepages in Venezuela has been known since the early days of Spanish occupation. It was not until 1912, however, that any serious exploration work was undertaken. In that year, the Caribbean Petroleum Co., then a subsidiary of the General Asphalt Co., employed a large staff of geologists to make a systematic survey of large areas in eastern and western Venezuela, selecting the most desirable localities out of the immense area covered by the Valladares concession. This preliminary work was completed in the fall of 1913, and in February, 1914, the company completed its first commercial well at Mene Grande. Development work has progressed slowly, for various reasons, but petroleum in quantity has been encountered in nine widely separated localities. The Mene Grande field has been put on a producing basis and approximately 4,000,000 bbl. of oil is being shipped annually. Increasing quantities of oil are now being drawn from El Mene and La Rosa. In the light of these developments, the world's need for oil reserves, and the proximity of Venezuela to the United States, American capital is being attracted more and more to Venezuela. Although considerable careful geological work has been done in Venezuela by the various oil companies now operating, most of the data is buried in the company files, and the published literature has been extremely meager. The most valuable contribution to date has been a map and report by Jahn, which, as it was printed in Spanish, is not generally available to the American oil public. Surface, auger and underground techniques are uniquely combined with specialized transport vehicles to coax the coal from seams unduly protected by topography and lithology. These factors account for what is believed to be the swiftest and most economical means of working the Beckley, W. Va., property.

This chapter presents a successful approach for achieving mine entry stability at the Cane Creek potash mine by the utilization of closure measurements. The mine is located in southeastern Utah (Fig. l). Mining is being conducted at depths in excess of 3000 ft under structurally complex geologic conditions typical of the Paradox salt basin. The closure measurement systems described have definite application for determining relative entry stability in other nonelastic rocks which are similar in behavior to potash. Similar types of closure measurements have been taken in various underground openings throughout the United States, Canada, arid Europe. Application of this closure data has previously met with varying degrees of success as a tool for design of under- ground openings in both elastic and nonelastic media.1-32 Closure measurements can be made easily and economically and they provide a practical solutiori to a practical problem. They are in-situ measurements which do not necessarily require laboratory correlation. Simple closure measurements have special significance in potash because "steady-state" ' closure rate, or creep, of the entries is measured. These closure rates can be utilized because nonelastic media such as potash will never achieve absolute stability around a mine entry. The potash will tend to creep or deform until all entries are closed and the overburden stress is redistributed over what was previously the mine area. The minerals industry in general should bow in homage to the uranium milling industry. Those in the uranium milling industry have "spark- plugged" more progress in the application of instrumentation and control in the last 5 years than has been made in 50 years by the industry in general. Part of this real progress in the application of instrumentation and control has been born of necessity because milling processes are more complex. A lot of the impetus for instrumentation and control has come from the fact that the industry is new, the processes are new, and there are no hide-bound conventions to overcome. Part of it comes from the fact that much of processing is more chemical than metallurgical and the thinking of the process chemist has carried over into the plants. One need not elaborate on what instrumentation has done for the process chemical industries. Each new mill that is constructed, if of appreciable size, seems to employ more instrumentation than the previously completed plant. Plant A makes a break-through in the application of instrumentation to a particular part of the process and Plant B accepts this and goes one step farther, while Plant C, anticipating Plant B, makes two or three more steps before Plant B is entirely leveled out.

ALTHOUGH age-hardening in an aluminum-base alloy containing magnesium was observed by Alfred Wilm1 as early as 1911, it was not until 1919 that a theory of the mechanism of age-hardening was proposed. Merica, Waltenberg and Scott,2 studying the age-hardening character-istics of Duralumin at the National Bureau of Standards, came to the conclusion that age-hardening of this alloy is caused by the precipitation of CuAl2, which is less soluble at the aging temperature than at the solu¬tion heat-treating temperature. It was postulated that the initially precipitated particles were of fine colloidal dimensions but that they gradually grew in size. Maximum hardness was assumed to be attained when the particles reached a critical size. This theory was at first received skeptically, since it was a widely accepted view at that time that the solid solution state should represent the hardest state of an alloy. Shortly thereafter, Jeffries and Archer proposed their well-known "slip interference theory."3 They suggested that age-hardening was accomplished by the precipitated particles acting as keys interfering with slip along crystallographic glide planes. They showed that this mechanical theory led directly to the assumption that maximum harden-ing would be produced by particles of a critical size, which they suggested would have a diameter approximately 10 times that of the aluminum atom. This contribution amplified and explained so rationally the age-hardening theory of Merica, Waltenberg and Scott that wide accept-ance resulted.

During the 1920's, approximately 11,000 small gasifiers were in operation in the United States. They converted about 15 million tons (13.6 Mt) of coal per year into low Btu gas. In some cases, hot raw gas was used for applications such as firing open hearth furnaces or brick kilns. In other cases the gases produced in the gasifiers were cooled, cleaned and desulfurized for various utility and industrial purposes. The steel industry was by far the largest user. The most important fact was that the conversion of coal to a usable fuel gas was demonstrated to be commercial. During the late 1940's and early 1950's, this form of energy was largely replaced by natural gas as the pipeline net work was expanded. Producer gas was no longer economically competitive. Over the past 25 years, government controls on the interstate price of natural gas have maintained this situation. At present only three commercial small coal gasifier plants are still in operation in the United States. These facilities are operated
